The Catamaran Resort and Spa, San Diego
The Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa is situated between Sail Bay and the Pacific Ocean where San Diego’s Scripps family once had their summer home. The elegant hotel at the corner of Mission Boulevard and Pacific Beach Drive was designed with a 1950s Polynesian vibe. The lobby’s dramatic island Mulberry Tapa (barkcloth) that hangs behind the Tahitian Black Koa wood welcome desk, an exotic stone waterfall and koi pond, hand-crafted Mexican Cantera floor tiles, and dark Honduran mahogany finishes welcome guests to a private tropical paradise. Imported traditional Pacific Island artworks adorn the lobby and other shared spaces in the hotel, and complement the colonial Hawaiian architecture.
Catamaran Resort Rooms
There are seven kinds of guest accommodations at the Catamaran that are divided between bay front and garden view choices. Bay front rooms provide a king or two double beds, a sitting area, and a small fridge. Bay front suites have separate bedrooms and couches in the living areas that fold out to beds, plus wet bars and fridges. Bay front suites are between the Tower and Sail Bay. Bay front rooms are in the building next to the suites facing Sail Bay.
Deluxe bay front and garden suites have separate bedrooms and fold-out couches in the living area, but also have kitchens with stoves, ovens, and full-size refrigerators. Bay front and garden studios have full kitchens, two double beds, and dining areas. All deluxe suites and studios are located in the Tower where you can enjoy epic views of either Coronado Bridge and beyond to Mexico, or Crystal Pier and north to La Jolla , depending on your room location.
Many bay front accommodations open to the sandy shores of Sail Bay, separated only by a grassy area. Garden view rooms open to the lush tropical plants and trees throughout the property; some open up to the pond or pool areas. To choose the room location that’s right for you, check out the property map . All rooms have patios or balconies, free HBO, hi-speed wireless Internet (paid upgrade for larger bandwidth), an iPod docking station, coffeemakers, laptop size room safe, irons and ironing boards, and hair dryers.
If you want a little more privacy away from the action combined with epic views, choose a room on the upper floors of the Tower. The best bay front rooms and suites are the ones facing Sail Bay. This area is in the heart of the action and convenient to the water, so if you want to watch passersby on the bike/walkway that encircles Sail Bay, get in on one of the many resort activities, or catch an occasional wedding, this is the place to be. Some guests have expressed concern that rooms at the Catamaran are dated, so if aesthetics is your primary reason for choosing this hotel, check out the accommodation videos on their site before making a reservation.
Catamaran Resort Amenities
Ah, amenities. This is where the Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa really shines. You will never run out of things to do here. Adults will love Atoll Restaurant, Moray’s Lounge, the Bahia Belle, and the Catamaran Spa. Kids will go wild for the Kids’ Club and Arcade.
There are many wonderful places to eat near the hotel, but if you only eat one time at Atoll Restaurant at the Catamaran, make it Sunday Brunch with bottomless mimosas from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Weather permitting, take your brunch on the outdoor patio. It’s a little pricey, but oh so worth it.
Moray’s Lounge features local seasonal craft brews as well as a full bar. Happy Hours are daily from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Appetizers are $10, craft brews are $5, well drinks are $5.50, and house wines are $6. Inside, enjoy their 800 gallon saltwater aquarium and outside enjoy the late afternoon ambiance.
Bahia Belle hour-long cruises on Mission Bay are complimentary for Catamaran guests. Choose from family or cocktail sternwheeler cruises. Seasonal dining options are also available aboard the Bahia Belle, and often cocktail cruises feature DJs or live music.
Get your Zen fix at the Asian-inspired Catamaran Spa . Take a few minutes to yourself in the relaxation room with a fruit-infused water, work out in the fitness room, get a facial and make-up for a night out, or enjoy the steam room, sauna, or outdoor hot tub. Go all out and ask about the 2-hour Ritual.
Kids are important at the Catamaran. They’ll love the Kids’ Arcade with Dance Dance Revolution, air hockey, pool, arcade games, and more. Check out Kids’ Corner for more great activities for kids around the resort, the neighborhood, and out and about in San Diego.
These are just a few of dozens of activities at the resort and in the area. Hang out bayside on the beach, walk across the street to the Pacific Ocean for an entirely different beach experience, catch one of Catamaran’s complimentary Movies on the Bay or one of their famous luaus. Try yoga on a standup paddle board or learn to surf. Rent paddle boards, Funcats, kayaks, sail boats, Segways, bicycles, ski boats, you name it. If it says outdoor fun, the Catamaran can hook you up with a great time again and again.
Amenities tip:
Some guests have expressed concern about the costs of equipment rentals at the Catamaran, including steep deposits as much as $100 to $500. The suggestion is to stop by Mission Bay Sportcenter where many of the same rentals can be obtained at cheaper prices. Another frequent guest concern is the $18 per day self-parking fee, so be aware. Parking is tough anywhere in Pacific Beach and Mission Beach and the city does not hesitate to tow away your vehicle; be careful and read all street signs if you try to avoid this fee.
Catamaran Resort San Diego Neighborhood
The Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa is central to Mission and Pacific beaches . Just a four-minute walk away is World Famous , a wildly popular beachside restaurant. They’re open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert; check out their menus . If you can only get there once, make it breakfast. Rent bikes and hit Ocean Front Walk (bike/walkway along the beach) after breakfast. There are a ton of shops between World Famous and Crystal Pier , or ignore the shopping and simply enjoy the view. Go the opposite direction and ride down to Belmont Park for a nostalgic ride on the Giant Dipper . Across the street from Belmont Park ia Sandbar Sports Grill where you can get a refreshing mid-afternoon adult beverage. Across Mission Boulevard is lovely Bonita Cove Park ; here, you can lie in the grass and relax before getting back on the bikes, crossing West Mission Bay Drive, and taking Bayside Walk (bike/walkway along the bay) back to the Catamaran.
Catamaran Resort Promotions
There are abundant free activities and events going on at the Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa all the time. The Bahia Belle cruises are also complimentary for Catamaran guests. Happy Hour in Moray’s Bar is every day of the week from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Catamaran Spa often has Groupon deals, as does the resort.

Bottom Line
Although the dated Polynesian-style decor and interiors could use an update, this three-pearl resort in San Diego's Pacific Beach area is a great family-friendly choice with an array of features and direct beach access. Set on pretty grounds filled with lush greenery, koi ponds, and exotic birds, the hotel offers two on-site eateries, a lovely outdoor pool and hot tub, as well as a spa, salon, and fitness center. There's even a beautiful classic boat that offers sunset cruises and family activities, transforming into a nightclub scene in the evenings. The 310 guest rooms are bland and could use a refresh, but they're spacious and outfitted with modern comforts like flat-screen TVs, Keurig machines, iHome docks, and free Wi-Fi, while studios and suites add kitchenettes and dining/living space. For nicer and more modern rooms, check out the similarly priced and also beachfront Paradise Point Resort and Spa in Mission Bay.

Pets allowed, oyster hotel review, mid-range family-friendly resort with dated polynesian-style decor, but pretty green grounds.
This beachfront hotel sits on pretty green grounds full of palm trees, lush plants, trim lawns, ponds with colorful fish, and even exotic birds flying about. The greenery creeps inside as well -- a rock waterfall and koi pond in the lobby is skirted in ferns, small palms, and tropical greenery sprouting here and there beneath the sloped roof. Though dated, it somehow works, bringing a kitschy dose of the natural world inside. The place has a Polynesian vibe, with bamboo and rattan furniture, wooden art hanging on the walls, and teak wood elements. Though many spaces could use an update -- like the drab carpeting and beige walls in the lobby and hallways -- the resort is a fine choice with a great location and a good selection of amenities, garnering terrific ratings and reviews from guests.
Across the street from the beach on the shores of Mission Bay, close to restaurants and shops
The hotel is situated across the road from a beach in San Diego’s Pacific Beach community. The immediate area is residential, with private homes and vacation rentals, but there are a variety of shops and restaurants within walking distance. Nearby attractions include Belmont Park (five-minute drive), SeaWorld San Diego (10-minute drive), San Diego Zoo (17-minute drive), Cabrillo National Monument, (22-minute drive), and Legoland California (35-minute drive). Downtown San Diego is about a 15-minute drive from here, while the historic Gaslamp Quarter is 20 minutes away. San Diego International Airport is about a 20-minute drive from the hotel, or around an hour by public transportation. The nearest bus stop is a two-minute walk away.
Spacious but dated rooms, suites, and studios with private balconies/patios; some have kitchenettes
Rooms are plain and simple, and though they could use an update, they're clean and offer a decent set of amenities. Decor is dated, with beige walls and carpets, wooden furniture, and beds topped with striped bed runners. They're spacious, though, and have large glass doors that open onto private balconies or patios with views over the surroundings or onto the hotel's green grounds. Studios and suites have kitchenettes with four-burner stoves, ovens, microwaves, sinks, toasters, and full fridges, as well as living/dining space with blue couches, coffee tables, and chairs flanking small round tables. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges (full fridges in units with kitchenettes), iHome docks, laptop safes, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are equally bland decor-wise and quite small. They're outfitted with shower/tub combos, toiletries, and hairdryers; bathrobes can be found in the closets.
Two dining options, lovely pool and hot tub, direct beach access, spa and fitness facilities, and plenty of meeting rooms
The hotel offers two on-site dining options: Oceana Coastal Kitchen is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, serving Californian fare in an waterfront setting (outdoor seating overlooks the beach), while Moray's is the more casual option serving light bites and drinks, with a fun outdoor space with fire pits and tiki torches. A Sunday Champagne brunch is also available, as is room service. For an alternative dining/drinking experience, guests can hop onto the Bahia Belle, the hotel's classic sternwheeler that offers family hour and cocktail cruises on Mission Bay. Drinks, snacks, and family activities are available during the evening, while at night, there is music and dancing, and on the weekends live DJs.
The hotel's lovely, green grounds include a pretty outdoor pool and hot tub surrounded by loungers and tall palm trees, plus there's a poolside bar and grill. The resort has direct access to a beach, where guests can use the free beach chairs and umbrellas. Various water sport rentals and lessons are available here, including surfing, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking. Bike and Segway rentals are also available.
The hotel has a spa that offers massages, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments, facials, and other treatments. There's also a salon that offers hair styling, makeup, and nail services. The fitness room offers a handful of cardio and strength training machines as well as weights. Family-friendly facilities include a game room with a good selection of arcade games. Other facilities include 14 on-site meeting rooms available for various events, as well as a gift shop stocked with souvenirs, snacks, and drinks. There is a fee for both self-parking and valet.

Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa
Explore the exotic side of san diego.
The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a paradisiacal destination located on the shores of Mission Bay and mere steps from San Diego’s famous Pacific Beach. With features including lush tropical gardens and private beach, this Polynesian-themed hotel offers an ideal blend of fun and tranquility all year-round.
Established in 1958, the Catamaran is a paradise featuring more than 1,000 varieties of exotic plants and animals from around the world. Palm trees, bamboo, waterfalls and koi ponds appeal to the senses, while playful parrots delight and intrigue guests.
The Catamaran’s architecture, reminiscent of the traditional Colonial Hawaiian style, boasts accents including totem poles handcrafted in Bali, art pieces such as tapa cloth from Vanuatu and a beautiful front desk constructed of Black Koa wood imported directly from Tahiti.
At the Catamaran, guests are checked into one of 310 guest rooms, studios or suites, each with a private balcony or patio that opens to stunning views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Beach neighborhood and coastline, or the hotel’s lush tropical gardens. All guests are provided a full range of amenities including complimentary Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service.
On-site dining options include Oceana Coastal Kitchen, rated by Zagat as one of San Diego’s most anticipated restaurants and featuring chef-driven surf and turf dishes. Next door to this signature restaurant is Moray’s, where guests can sip on a signature Moray’s Mai Tai, savor a local craft beer and enjoy happy hour specials Monday-Friday. Both venues feature a blend of indoor and patio spaces, the latter lined with tiki torches, fire pit tables and lush palms.
Guests may also choose to grab a bite at Lava Java, the on-site grab and go café, or poolside at the Catamaran’s full bar and grill which serves up barbecue favorites during the spring and summer months. Another standout summer special is the Catamaran’s signature luaus, featuring live performers that guide guests through the cultures of the South Pacific as they enjoy a Hawaiian buffet.
Those who prefer to spend their time on the water can opt for a cruise on the Bahia Belle, a replica of an 1860s-era sternwheeler that tours around Mission Bay. Operating seasonally, the Bahia Belle is a turn-of-the-century, Mississippi-style boat that provides a 45-minute sightseeing cruise of Mission Bay. The 74-foot, 3-story sternwheeler boat offers an observation deck to view the beautiful sites of the 4,200-acre aquatic park.
The Catamaran Spa—the only beachfront spa in San Diego—offers a South Pacific-inspired menu of treatments including massages, facials, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments and more—carried out with all-natural marine and botanical elements. Additional wellness amenities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, beach cabanas, an open air fitness center, seasonal outdoor yoga classes and more.
Further vacation activities include rental paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, surfboards, bicycles and Segways. The Catamaran is also located within the beach towns Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, where guests can stroll the boardwalk or the iconic Crystal Pier, play at the beach or experience a variety of cafes and boutiques. The resort is within 10 miles of major San Diego attractions such as SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Downtown’s Gaslamp District and the San Diego International Airport.

How Did Dennis Wilson Die? What to Know About the Beach Boy's Untimely Death and Burial at Sea
The Beach Boy died of an “accidental drowning” in 1983
Nicole Briese is a contributing writer at PEOPLE. She has been working at PEOPLE since 2022. Her work has previously appeared in Us Weekly, Brides and MTV News.

Dennis Wilson ’s last day on Earth was spent in and around the water he loved.
The Beach Boy , who checked into two separate detox and hospital facilities and promptly left both in the days leading up to his death, had been aboard a 52-foot yawl named the Emerald before he drowned near the marina slip it was stationed in.
According to boat owner Bill Oster and yacht manager Skip Lahti, who spoke to PEOPLE in 1984, Wilson had been drinking heavily prior to jumping into the water to dive for unearthed treasures. “He was just being Dennis, entertaining everybody, being his lovable self, goofing around,” Oster said.
When Wilson didn’t come up from one of his dives, a harbor patrol boat was flagged down. Tragically, divers recovered his body from the water shortly after.
Wilson’s bandmates, brothers Brian and Carl Wilson, cousin Mike Love and pal Al Jardine, released a statement at the time of Dennis’ drowning, saying, “We know Dennis would have wanted to continue in the tradition of the Beach Boys. His spirit will remain in our music.”
Love also spoke to PEOPLE about the loss of his cousin, saying, “We were all so much a part of each other that I'm sure we'll miss him every single day the rest of our lives,” he said. “There's no way we'll not miss him."
In the decades after his death, Wilson's legacy has lived on through the Beach Boys' famed music. The iconic band is now the subject of a new Disney+ documentary, The Beach Boys , which began streaming on May 24.
Keep reading to find out more about Dennis Wilson’s death, including details from his coroner’s report, burial and more.

According to Wilson’s coroner’s report, the Beach Boy died of an “accidental drowning.”
Prior to the incident, Wilson had been aboard a 52-foot yawl named the Emerald with friends Oster and Colleen McGovern.
Oster told PEOPLE that his friend began drinking early that morning before going rowing and eating a lunch of sandwiches on the boat. After a nap, Wilson began diving into the water, despite its chilly 58-degree temp.
As Lahti explained, Wilson was exploring the waters of the neighboring slip where he had docked his own 62-foot boat, the Harmony, years earlier and thrown items overboard. (Wilson sold the Harmony in 1980 to pay for bills and loans.)
"He was in and out of the water, getting a kick out of all the stuff he was finding," Lahti told PEOPLE.
After a quick break, Wilson returned to the water around 4 p.m. Roughly 25 minutes later, he took his last dive, never to resurface.
Rolling Stone later reported that the musician’s blood alcohol level was .26 at the time of his death, according to his toxicological tests — more than twice the legal limit to drive in the state of California.
When did Dennis Wilson die?
Wilson died on Dec. 28, 1983. While the exact time of his death is unknown, The New York Times reported that he last dove into the water around 4:25 p.m.
When Wilson did not surface, Oster flagged down a harbor patrol boat. Four divers recovered the songwriter’s body at approximately 5:45 p.m.
Where did Dennis Wilson die?
Wilson died in the Marina del Rey marina. A diving team of four recovered his body from directly under the empty boat slip he had been exploring, 12 feet below the water’s surface.
How old was Dennis Wilson when he died?
Wilson was 39 years old at the time of his death. He celebrated his 39th birthday just three weeks earlier on Dec. 4.
What were Dennis Wilson’s last words?

While Wilson’s last words are unknown, Oster remembered the last sighting he had of his friend just ahead of his disappearance. "He didn't indicate any problem," he told PEOPLE in 1984.
According to Oster, Wilson, who was swimming at the end of the harbor slip, “blew a few bubbles and swam to the dinghy very quietly. It was like he was trying to hide,” he said.
Oster initially thought it was a joke when Wilson didn’t come back up. “I thought he was clowning,” he said. “I jumped on the dock to flush him out and then we would all laugh."
Where was Dennis Wilson buried?
Wilson was laid to rest in the Pacific Ocean just after sunset on Jan. 4, 1984, with a burial-at-sea directed by the Coast Guard. “That's what Dennis wanted done,” his wife Shawn Wilson reportedly said at the time, according to the United Press International archives .
She added: “Wherever he is, I know he'll be glad that we're doing it."
According to the outlet, President Reagan granted the ceremony, which is an honor typically reserved for members of the military and requires approval from a vice admiral or higher for civilians.
How did the Beach Boys react to Dennis Wilson’s death?

Following the drummer’s funeral, the Beach Boys came together at the home of band co-manager Tom Hulett and toasted their fallen member with the most expensive champagne Love could find. “We were sort of having a wake," Love told PEOPLE, adding, "Dennis would have wanted it this way.”
The group also discussed honoring their friend and family member through music. "I told Brian I thought the best thing we could do was write a song for Dennis,” Love said.
Different members of the group had mixed reactions to Dennis’ sea burial, however. The ceremony reportedly went against the wishes of his brother Carl, who had made plans to have Dennis buried near their father Murray in Inglewood Cemetery in Inglewood, Calif. In 2002, Brian told The Guardian that Dennis’ burial “seemed wrong” to him.
Jardine had a different viewpoint, telling the outlet in 2019, “The entire career of the Beach Boys is engulfed by Dennis’ love of the ocean ... It was only fitting that he return to the ocean.”
What legacy did Dennis Wilson leave behind?

Wilson is perhaps best remembered for the musical legacy he left behind, both as a member of the Beach Boys and as a solo artist.
A founding member of the band, Wilson remained a part of it until the late ’70s.
During his time with the group, the Beach Boys released some of their biggest hits, including “I Get Around,” “Good Vibrations,” “California Girls” and “Little Bird,” which Wilson co-wrote.
He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the rest of the Beach Boys in 1988.
Wilson, who was reportedly an uncredited songwriter on Joe Cocker’s 1974 hit “You Are So Beautiful,” according to the Chicago Tribune , also wrote his own music. His 1977 solo album, Pacific Ocean Blue , sold roughly 200,000 copies upon its release, per Rolling Stone .
One of the album’s tracks, an instrumental called “Holy Man,” was later rerecorded by Foo Fighters ’ drummer Taylor Hawkins and Queen ’s Brian May and Roger Taylor.
The musician tried his hand at acting, too: In 1971, he starred as a mechanic alongside James Taylor in Two-Lane Blacktop .
In addition to his creative pursuits, Wilson left behind a family. He was a father to five children, including daughter Jennifer and son Scott, whom he shared with ex-wife Carole Freedman; sons Carl and Michael, whom he shared with ex-wife Barbara Charren; and son Gage Dennis, whom he shared with wife Shawn.
