Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Same hull design as C&C 33. Updated keel on later boats.

Review of Baltic 33

Basic specs..

The Baltic 33 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.68 - 1.78 meter (5.51 - 5.81 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta MD11C diesel engine.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Baltic 33 is 1.94, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.9 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Baltic 33 is about 172 kg/cm, alternatively 966 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 172 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 966 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 29m 2 (312 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

This section is reserved boat owner's changes, improvements, etc. Here you might find (or contribute with) inspiration for your boat.

Do you have changes/improvements you would like to share? Upload a photo and describe what you have done.

We are always looking for new photos. If you can contribute with photos for Baltic 33 it would be a great help.

33-metre Baltic "Zemi" : World cruiser with cockpit as a teak sculpture

Sören Gehlhaus

 ·  19.06.2023

Wood to wood. "Zemi" crosses the Finnish birch forest on the two-hour journey to the Baltic quay in Jakobstad. Teak lies on the deck, superstructure, coaming and the entire cockpit

The "Zemi" owners took delivery of their first Baltic in 2005. And the christening champagne for the new one came from the long-ago launch party. She is 33.50 metres long and is made of carbon - which goes without saying for the Finns at Baltic Yachts. The owner's family and friends intend to take the high-performance and luxuriously equipped cruising yacht on sailing adventures in high and low latitudes around the world. After trials off Jakobstad, "Zemi" will sail to Norway, then to Spitsbergen and Iceland before heading for Scotland. She will then head for the Canary Islands, followed by an Atlantic crossing to the Caribbean, where she will take part in the St Barths Bucket superyacht regatta in 2024. From there, the circumnavigation will continue with a passage through the Panama Canal and a crossing of the Pacific.

"Zemi" was built according to the construction and design specifications of Malcom McKeon in Bosund, where Baltic Yachts was founded 50 years ago in the hangar-like halls. Following the current Extension g of the Baltic Sea site in Jakobstad, the birthplace a good two kilometres inland will be closed. The 565th construction number was the last yacht to arrive on the low-loader for launching by mobile crane. Project manager Tommy Johansson and the construction team were suitably moved when the bronze-coloured hull was lowered into the water. The streamlined low superstructure with its vertical windows is just as characteristic as the richly teak-clad main cockpit, which can be converted into a large sunbathing area and is protected by a fold-down sprayhood and a removable full-length bimini.

The electric motor becomes a hydrogenerator

The 7.60 metre wide 95-tonner is propelled by a 247 kilowatt electric motor from Danfoss, which acts on the propeller via a conventional shaft system - which, however, unfolds and cannot be adjusted as with the Baltic-Bau "Perseverance" . This saves weight and complexity. Under sail, the propeller turns and the engine becomes a generator and energy supplier for the lithium-ion batteries. If necessary, two 129-kilowatt diesel generators are switched on. "Zemi" relies on a twin rudder system and telescopic keel, the shaft of which, in contrast to the lift keel, only protrudes minimally into the hull and on which the 28-tonne bomb can be lowered from 3.80 metres to 5.80 metres. The Southern Spars mast provides several headsail options, including J1 and J2, a staysail on the removable stay, a furling code sail and a variety of A-sails on the fixed bowsprit.

Below deck, Swedish architect Andreas Martin-Löf has implemented a style that he describes as warm minimalism and which is characterised by an appreciation of craftsmanship. The predominant wood is walnut, most of which Baltic laminated onto super-light honeycomb structures in the form of veneers. Weight saving also plays a role in the bathrooms, where washbasins and surfaces are covered in limestone veneers. Martin-Löf paid particular attention to lighting, placing lanterns made of Japanese rice paper and walnut strips in the corners of the salon and installing light sources in the partition walls.

A previous incident involving Russia came after its 2014 annexation of Crimea. Moscow wanted the Kerch Strait , previously shared with Ukraine, to be considered internal Russian waters, allowing it to stop any ship traveling there without its authorisation. This led to a sharp rise in tensions with Ukraine following the seizure of Ukrainian vessels in this area in 2018.

Legal and geopolitical interest

Russia has more than a purely legal interest in clarifying the baselines of the Baltic Sea. “It's just one in a series of incidents marking a serious escalation of tensions in the region,” notes Rinna Kullaa, a specialist in Russian foreign policy issues at the University of Tampere in Finland.

She says it's no coincidence that the Russian bill was put forward after Finland's decision on Tuesday to propose a law tightening controls along the border with Russia, which has been closed since last year . The Russian initiative is payback, in part.

Read more Russia accused of meddling in the GPS systems of Baltic Sea countries

And there are other issues at play. “It also comes at a time when Russia is seeking to exert greater control over the airspace above Kaliningrad,” says Kullaa. Moscow has been accused of jamming GPS signals over this Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania.

For Basil Germond, a specialist in maritime security issues at Lancaster University in the UK, Russia's aim in introducing and withdrawing this bill is to intensify “political pressure in the region, to gauge NATO's response”.

It may also be linked to President Vladimir Putin 's fixation with the history of the USSR.

“It's not surprising that the Russian government wants to go back on the maritime limits negotiated in 1985, during the détente period,” notes Jeff Hawn, Russia specialist at the London School of Economics.

“Putin believes that Russia was tricked by the West at that time. So for him, this is also a way of saying that he wants to correct those mistakes.”

sailing yacht 33m WinWin by Baltic at sea photo by Jeff Brown

Superyacht WinWin - Baltic Yachts' 33m balances performance, style and comfort

Designing and building a sailing yacht to a number of conflicting parameters is no mean feat. However the team behind WinWin have pulled it off with aplomb. Her name is not just a statement of intent on the racecourse, but in fact derives from her project name - so chosen as she achieves win-win situations in the delicate balance between comfort and performance, weight and noise insulation, lifting keel and accommodation layout.

A wide, high transom, clean decks, super-sleek profile and plumb bow scream performance, but her clean, contemporary and unfussy interior suggests there is more to WinWin than just being an out-and-out racer. In addition, her highly personalised layout includes a giant owner's suite which essentially occupies the entire forward section from the forward deck saloon steps to the bow. The owner has even chosen not to put a TV in the saloon that might distract guests from the pure enjoyment of sailing.

Inspiration

Designed for a highly experienced and very active owner, WinWin was always destined to offer cruising ability and comfort with regatta-winning potential. "I started from zero, but with all the key players involved so the interior and deck layout were developed together," says Javier Jaudenes, the naval architect responsible for her lines. "She was drawn for reaching and downwind sailing, but is tippy enough for light winds also. A key feature was that she could be operated by four crew when cruising."

Construction

An all-carbon hull, high-tech structural materials and attention to the weight of every fitting ensure WinWin is not only incredibly well built, but also incredibly light. In spite of this, a great deal of attention was paid to noise and vibration insulation. "[Noise specialists] Van Cappellen were involved from the very beginning," explains Baltic Yachts CEO Henry Hawkins.

"On WinWin we used much more cork in some of the non-structural panels where we would normally have just used foam. Cabin doors also feature drop-down seals. We employed 4,912 kilos of noise damping materials, up from an initial prediction of 4,300 kilos," Hawkins continues. In spite of this, overall displacement was nearly two tons under the original estimate of 78,958 kilos. SP Gurit also assisted in the engineering of the coachroof structure, which needed to be able to support the low coachroof allowing for an aft bulkhead that disappears at the flick of a switch, while maintaining good headroom inside.

Exterior styling

A low profile coachroof, flat sheerline, beam carried all the way aft and a clean deck layout make WinWin a stunning yacht on the eyes. Angled helm plinths with matching helm seats add a touch of coordinated style to the look.

Interior design

WinWin's interior layout is very much a custom design catering for the specific requirements of her owner. "We had 2.5 metres as the target headroom, which is quite tall for a yacht of this size and nature," says Mark Tucker of Design Unlimited. "We built a full-size mock-up very early on so the owner could really get comfortable with the sightlines and everything."

The entire forward section of the yacht is given to the owner’s quarters, including a twin-bunk pilot cabin to starboard (which doubles as an emergency guest overflow cabin), a dayhead that includes a shower, and a huge owner's suite that includes an aft saloon area, office, sleeping cabin with walkaround double bed, separate head, and a forward en suite with a huge shower. The two guest cabins are located aft of the saloon. The finish is clean and contemporary, employing a technique developed by Design Unlimited and Baltic Yachts that applies white paint to oak that is then immediately rubbed back. "The owner is into keeping detail to a minimum, keeping everything very clean," Tucker explains. There's no cut-back in luxury and comfort and as much as racing she's a really good boat for cruising - a difficult balance to achieve.

Outdoor living

Sunpads at the forward end of the cockpit provide a perfect spot for lazing while anchored or relaxing while sailing, with the drop-down glass bulkhead providing a seamless flow to the interior. With minimal intrusion from the deck gear, there is ample space for further lounging, seating or dining. A transom door provides a good bathing and tender boarding platform.

Engineering and performance

A good blast is all that's needed to prove WinWin's win-win balance of performance and comfort. In 12 to 13 knots true wind, she sits comfortably at 11.2 knots close-hauled at an apparent wind angle of 19 degrees (35 degrees TWA), while cracking off in 16 to 18 knots of breeze brings an instant surge to over 14 knots. Off the wind flying the smaller top-down furling kite in 26 knots of wind, she canters along happily at 18.5 knots with just four people on deck. She has been designed to take a square-topped racing main and has a bolt-on bowsprit that will allow for more powerful kites, but the crew are easing their way into her and it will be a year or two before her full potential is unleashed. Under power, the retractable propulsion system drives her easily and efficiently, while retractable bow and sternthrusters ensure she is a breeze to manoeuvre in port. The engine room offers near standing headroom and plenty of space for the engineer to move around - an object lesson in how to design a technical space on a performance 33 metre sailing yacht.
