Zeelander 44 review: Extraordinary quality more than justifies hefty price tag

First unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show to a well-heeled chorus of public cooing, the Zeelander 44 is not your everyday boat. Designed and built in the Netherlands specifically to cater for a supremely solvent client base, this high-end take on the classic lobster boat exhibits the painstaking detailing of an art installation.

While most boat builders embrace straight edges and simplified mouldings as a means of increasing production efficiencies, the Zeelander 44 is all graduated curves, sweeps and seamless fluidity. In fact, it has the feeling of something painstakingly ground into pebble-smooth perfection by the sculpting actions of wind and water – and that is by no means an accident…

The idea was to create a boat that would always look in its element and the result is not just a very beautiful and distinctive craft, but one on which nothing feels ordinary. In addition to the fact that it takes 42 individual moulds to generate the parts required to build the Zeelander 44, there is tremendous pleasure to be had simply in examining the curves of the hull windows and the fabric panelling; the near perfect finish of the arching steel guardrails and the swept and faceted joinery.

Even the ‘wood’ trim beneath the guardrails is a hardwearing artificial material, individually hand-painted to look like natural wood grain by a local artist. The quality of her work confounds belief and it’s one of many touches that helps make each Zeelander 44 feel like a one-off original.

The twin cockpit layout, sheltered in the forward part by the overhead roof and orbited in its entirety by easy-access side decks, is a lovely feature. It makes the main deck feel much more versatile than those with a single unbroken space and it also enables the skipper to be kept fully involved in the social hub of the upper cockpit.

With a fridge, icebox and hand-washing station to starboard, plus a huge flip-down swim platform and an overhead canvas that remains unflappable even at 30 knots in a Force 5, the space is tailormade for large gatherings.

Down below you get a central atrium with galley to starboard and heads to port, plus a raised convertible dinette in the bow space and a full-beam master double with lounge and changing area beneath the cockpit sole. And just as on the main deck, the sweeping proliferation of curves has a lovely way of inviting you from space to space.

The forward dinette converts into an extra double berth for guests

True, the forward berth is a touch short and the convex shape of the doors for the galley’s overhead lockers sees them impede one another’s travel if they are opened simultaneously – but given the sheer loveliness of these spaces, you’re unlikely to dwell on issues such as these.

The Zeelander 44 helming experience

It takes around 17 seconds to reach 25 knots, but what the Zeelander 44 lacks in pace, it gains in refinement. Even as we creep along at inadvisably slow displacement speeds, noting our performance figures among the chop of the Lelystad shallows, the water that finds its way over the bow hits the screen with a muted ‘thunk’ that barely registers. And as we push on, things get even better…

The flared and elevated bow with double chines adds extraordinary dryness to the mix – and if the soft, virtually vibration-free ride of this profoundly solid Category B cruising machine is impressive, the absence of noise is even more remarkable. This is an open boat with a pair of 435hp diesel engines in a Force 5 at wide-open throttle, and yet it felt and sounded as refined as most boats at half that speed in calm conditions.

It’s not the fastest boat in its class and, to keep the ride at optimum softness, you do need to give the leg a decent bit of trim, which can limit forward visibility past the elevated bow – but with a 32-knot top end that is every bit as quiet as a sedentary 22-knot cruise, this is as serene and comfortable a 44-footer as you are ever likely to witness.

Our verdict

The Zeelander 44 is eye-wateringly expensive. In fact, at more than 1.5 million euros, it costs the kind of money that could easily buy you a high-quality 44-foot cruiser from a mainstream brand, a five-bedroom house in a pleasant part of Hampshire and a Porsche.

But the Zeelander deserves to be considered in isolation from the sobering pragmatism of the regular market because it simply isn’t like anything else out there. With its beautiful materials, its indulgent carnival of curves and the painstaking work that has gone into creating an artisan finish, this boat is for those who crave something special; something only a handful of people in the world will ever own; something with the power to evoke a tangible welling of excitement every time you step on board. Viewed in that context, the Zeelander 44 is a stupendous piece of work.

New Views of the Zeelander 7

Zeelander Yachts in the Netherlands has released new photos of the 66-foot Zeelander 7, completing the yard’s year-long rebranding project.

The Zeelander 7 was originally called the Z72 . It now has the same naming configuration as the 48-foot Zeelander 5 and the 56-foot Zeelander 6.

“By relaunching the Zeelander 7, we are making a bold statement: Zeelander builds just one design in three different sizes,” yard founder and owner Sietse Koopmans stated in a press release. “The golden thread that runs through all our yachts is the same rich, curved aesthetic, sculptural grace and sensuous finish.”

Key specs for the Zeelander 7: According to the shipyard, the yacht has a top speed of 40 knots with a decibel level of 72, comparable to the noise level in a typical office space.

It’s safe to say we’re all splurging a little more during quarantine, but one East Coaster has made quite the big-ticket purchase. The marine enthusiast from Norwalk, CT, has just taken delivery of a brand new luxury yacht that cost in the ballpark of $3 million.

Designed and built by Zeelander Yachts , the 55-footer is an all-around performer imbued with elegance and style. Finished to the Dutch yard’s exacting standards, this Z55 the first of the Zeelander lineup to have an interior penned by the lauded Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design studio. Sinot has previously worked on several superyachts, including Feadship’s 300-foot Aquarius and 285-foot Lonian , and has given the svelte cruiser an interior to rival any big boat.

With a neutral colorway and a flowing open-plan layout, the yacht feels plenty spacious despite its size. She has three generous suites on the lower deck, including a full-beam master cabin with adjoining en suite. Elsewhere, there’s a light-filled main saloon with expansive panoramic windows, a dining space and a well-appointed galley.

Outdoors, seafarers have plenty of space for sunbathing and sundowners. There is an alfresco lounge on the aft which comes complete with comfy white couches and a luxurious mahogany table. This versatile piece of furniture can be used as a coffee table, raised all the way up to serve as a dining table, or even converted into a large sunbed. The main deck, meanwhile, has a beach club, sunbeds and an upscale bar that’s ripe for an afternoon G&T.

“We are glad how our collaboration with Sinot went out,” Sietse Koopmans, chairman and founder of Zeelander Yachts, said in a press release. “They did an amazing contemporary interior and managed to put their Superyacht experience into a 55-foot yacht.”

The best part? She’s got plenty of grunt. The Z55 is fitted with the most powerful engines available: a pair of 1,000hp Volvo Penta IPS 1350. This propulsion combined with her deep-V hull—it’s colored in classic flag blue, of course—allows the vessel to reach an impressive top speed of 42 knots. It also has a range of more than 500 nautical miles when cruising at 28 knots.

On top of that, the Z55 is equipped with a Seakeeper stabilizer to eliminate rolling and keep you comfortable. She’s quite fuel-efficient, too. The yacht needs under 50 US gallons (or about 189 liters) per hour running at the solid 25 knots.

At top speed, the sound frequency is only 70 dBA.

THE NEW ZEELANDER 5

Drive your desire.

The new Zeelander 5 is not just all appearance and no substance, though; this spellbinding yacht also delivers improved functionality. Its side-boarding doors and passarelle allow easy entry, while the full walk-around cockpit gives access to the iconic Zeelander swim platform. And most importantly, the Zeelander 5 can be opened up for the summer months with an electronically operated sunroof and retractable sliding window aft, or sealed off for cool winter cruises.

The new boat is broader in the beam, which offers many benefits. There is greater volume below, naturally, but also better hydrodynamics and cruising characteristics. And the Zeelander yard has one of the best names in the business when it comes to sound and vibration proofing. Running at full throttle, the boat makes an easy 45 knots, but all you’ll hear is the sound of the wake astern. Riding at anchor, the generator and aircon produce just 46dB – literally whisper quiet. While at full speed, the noise level is only 70dB – like water running down a gentle creek.

ZEELANDER Z55

A sprightly performer imbued with zest and style.

With a spacious and high-spec interior, a long list of innovative features as standard, excellent performance and three comfortable cabins on board, the Z55 is the sport cruiser that has it all. The Z55’s distinctive exterior is the result of a collaboration between the builder and renowned Dutch designer Cor D.

The Z55 has four headlights and three bedrooms – a master suite which includes a vanity table, a VIP suite and a guest cabin with bunk beds (also good for crew). It also includes a tender garage to the side of the yacht. This proves especially useful for owners in locations where the waters are very shallow and it can be hard to get to the dock to reach the places of interest or restaurants you want to visit. A swimming platform is fitted on the aft of the boat to provide you with easy access to the tender and the water.

ZEELANDER Z72

Tasteful at every curve.

With her platform extended she is 22 meters, making her the largest Zeelander. The Zeelander in-house design team created the exterior of the yacht in collaboration with Cor D. Rover. An S-Shaped deck line, a wide stern and an abundance of curved surfaces. The exterior design was inspired by the way Porsche has incrementally evolved its designs over time. A legendary icon.

The interior design is done entirely by the Zeelander Yachts in-house team.  She has a sophisticated décor, huge panoramic windows and vast  social areas for the best possible guest experience on board. The shipyard’s creations epitomise not just style, but power too. The Z72 carries a sporty DNA and her top speed exceeds 40 knots.
