Nord's helidecks

Nord is home to two helicopter landing pads allowing guests to come and go as they please in total privacy. The first can be found on the bridge deck aft with a retractable hangar that can concertina into the superstructure when not in use; a second larger helipad is positioned on the bow. 

Nord in the Indian Ocean

Nord has already racked up some serious mileage since her delivery in Feburary 2021. She departed Gibraltar in April and headed straight to the Caribbean to catch the last of the winter cruising season. After a brief stay back at the Lürssen shipyard she spent summer cruising the Mediterranean before heading down through the Suez Canal and into the Indian Ocean.

If her champagne-tinted hull wasn't enough to make this vessel stand out, its nameplate certainly makes sure people know Nord is in town. Its unusual flared bow starts to square off as it meets the foredeck, which allows for a nameplate to be emblazoned across the front (and it even lights up at night).

Nord on the move

Nord was pictured here on sea trials under her build name Project Opus. The North Sea is a rite of passage for superyachts leaving the Lürssen shipyard and Nord was no exception.

Designed by Italian design studio Nuvolari Lenard , Nord features a total of six decks, which can all be seen clearly here. Speaking about the superyacht, studio co-founder Dan Lenard previously described Nord as "a warship wearing a tuxedo". The yacht is specifically intended for long-range cruising and global exploration.

In some lights, Nord's distinct hull colour seems to turn to gold with turquoise LEDs illuminating her nameplates and accents of the superstructure.

Orcas Sink 50-Foot Yacht Off the Coast of Morocco

T he boat-ramming orcas are back in action: Two people had to be rescued from a sailing yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar after the black-and-white marine mammals damaged the vessel so badly it later sank, reporters Reuters ’ David Latona.

The incident occurred around 9 a.m. local time Sunday, some 14 miles north of Cape Spartel in northern Morocco. Passengers aboard the 50-foot Alboran Cognac felt blows to the yacht’s hull and saw that the rudder had been damaged. As water began leaking onto the ship, they contacted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Tarifa, Spain, which directed them to prepare for an emergency rescue.

About an hour later, a nearby oil tanker picked up the two crew members, who were customers of Spain-based Alboran Charter , which owns the yacht, reports the Washington Post ’s Dan Rosenzweig-Ziff.

The boat took on more water and sank soon after. It’s not clear how many orcas targeted the vessel.

The sinking of the Alboran Cognac is the latest in a string of incidents involving orcas and ships in the Strait of Gibraltar. The highly intelligent, social marine mammals made headlines last spring , when they sank a Swiss yacht called Champagne off the coast of Spain. In November, they brought down another ship , a Polish sailing yacht called the Grazie Mamma .

But the animals’ unusual behavior goes back even further: Since 2020, mariners have reported 700 interactions between orcas and ships in the Strait of Gibraltar, per Reuters. The Alboran Cognac is the fifth vessel orcas have sunk in the last three years, reports Live Science ’s Harry Baker.

Most of the incidents have been recorded in the Strait of Gibraltar, a waterway linking the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The strait, which is bordered by Morocco to the south and by Spain to the north, is home to a distinct—and critically endangered —subpopulation of fewer than 50 orcas .

However, last June, orcas also rammed into a ship in the North Sea between Scotland and Norway, roughly 2,000 miles away from the Strait of Gibraltar. Scientists weren’t quite sure what to make of that incident, which raised the possibility that the destructive behavior was spreading to different groups of orcas.

In the meantime, authorities are urging mariners in the Strait of Gibraltar to exercise caution this summer. Spain’s Maritime Safety and Rescue Society recommends avoiding a large area between the Gulf of Cádiz and the Strait of Gibraltar; the agency also suggests that mariners sail as close to the coast as possible, especially from May to August, when orcas are more likely to be in the region.

If sailors do encounter orcas, the agency recommends they keep the vessel moving and head toward shallower waters. People onboard the ship should remain in the middle of the vessel and not approach the sides, where they may be at risk of falling overboard.

The agency also asked mariners to notify authorities of any orca encounters and, if possible, to take photographs of the creatures for identification.

Scientists remain puzzled by the orcas’ destructive behavior. A leading hypothesis is that a female nicknamed “White Gladis” started ramming into ships after having some sort of traumatic run-in with a vessel; she may also have been pregnant when she first started targeting ships. Since orcas are social creatures, other members of White Gladis’ group may have simply followed her lead and mimicked her actions.

“The idea of revenge is a great story, but there’s no evidence for it,” said Lori Marino , a neuroscientist and the founder and president of the Whale Sanctuary Project, to BBC Newsbeat ’s Shaun Dacosta last year.

Another possibility is that the orcas are curious about ships, or maybe, they’re just having fun.

“They’re probably socializing, yucking it up with each other about their adventures without realizing the terror they’re creating in their moments of joy,” said Andrew Trites , a marine mammal researcher at the University of British Columbia in Canada, to Business Insider ’s Erin Heger last summer.

Orcas have also been known to temporarily exhibit other unusual behaviors, like placing dead salmon atop their heads. The boat-ramming behavior may be another, similarly short-lived fad that the Strait of Gibraltar orcas will eventually move on from.

And they may already be doing just that: Between January and May 2024, the number of reported interactions with orcas was 65 percent lower than during the same period in 2023 and 40 percent lower than the average for those months across 2021, 2022 and 2023, according to the Atlantic Orca Working Group .

Whatever the orcas’ motivations, scientists have urged onlookers to avoid assigning human emotions to the animals’ behaviors. Though the boat-ramming killer whales have given rise to internet memes and merchandise that suggests they’re plotting an “ orca uprising ,” researchers argue that the marine mammals are not acting with malicious intent.

‘Pretty dangerous’: Yacht captain lends insights on area where teen killed in boat crash

He also says boat towing ella adler, 15, is ‘not ideal’ for wakeboarding.

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – A Key Biscayne yacht captain is sharing insight into the area where 15-year-old Ella Adler lost her life over the weekend.

A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report said she was wakeboarding with someone else when she fell into the water near the Nixon Beach Sandbar and was struck and killed by the passing boater, who never stopped to help.

“She had the wakeboard on, she had fallen off from being towed, and she was just in the water waiting to be recovered by her vessel,” FWC Officer George Reynaud told “Good Morning America” Wednesday. “She was in the water, with her life jacket on, with her wakeboard attached at the time of the impact.”

Reynaud said, “Nixon Beach does have a sandbar where boats go to congregate, however, they were outside of that area.”

The report, released Wednesday, identified the operator as Carlos Guillermo Alonso, 78, of Coral Gables.

Yacht captain Griffen Diaz spoke to Local 10 News on Wednesday. He said he was anchored at Nixon Beach, about a mile north of the crash, when it happened at around 4 p.m. Saturday.

“My heart goes out to this girl’s family and everyone who was involved,” Diaz said. “I have been really heartbroken about this story.”

Diaz said the water was choppy that day.

“The wind and the waves were coming out of the west which is very unusual for Biscayne Bay, it is a rare wind occurrence and it makes the bay a lot choppier,” he said.

The yacht captain told Local 10 News the channel is known to be treacherous.

“It is pretty dangerous there to water ski because of the heavy traffic; I would never recommend it,” Diaz said, later adding, “The last thing someone would expect is to find (someone) waterskiing in the water in that heavy traffic area.”

Instead, he said, “If someone were to want to waterski or go tubing or any kind of water sports there’s an area right in front of Brickell, right in front of the apartment buildings in Brickell, actually just North of the Rickenbacker Causeway bridge and that is a safe area because it is away from a channel and it is a safe place to waterski.”

We’re also learning more about the boat towing Adler: a 42-foot Fjord.

“Which is not the ideal boat you want to be waterskiing on or pulling somebody with,” Diaz said. “The ideal waterskiing boat has one single engine and can turn on a dime and pick you right back up.”

Regarding the crash, he said, “If she let go of the rope or fell, and the captain did not notice, that would be negligent on his behalf because your eyes are locked on the person in tow and that is usually the rule we follow.”

Diaz said it’s possible that Alonso, who authorities said is cooperating with investigators, didn’t know he even hit Adler.

“The last thing someone would expect is to find a waterskier in the water in that heavy traffic area,” he said. “It was a four-engine boat, they could have been going at a high rate of speed (and) by the time they got close they didn’t even see her in the water.”

It’s not clear whether Alonso will be charged.

After Orcas Sink Another Yacht, Researcher Says They're Probably Just Playing

Following news of the latest boat sunk by orcas in the waters near the Strait of Gibraltar, a killer whale researcher is warning that the incidents may be misunderstood.

News outlets ( including HuffPost ) have used the word “attack” to describe a spate of events in which orcas have damaged vessels in the waters around Morocco, Portugal and Spain. But Monika Wieland Shields, co-founder and director of the nonprofit Orca Behavior Institute, argued the term is misleading in an MSNBC opinion piece published Thursday.

“When I watch the videos of these so-called attacks, I see something completely different,” Shields wrote.

Rather than an act of aggression, “it looks like another behavior we often see killer whales engage in: play.”

On Tuesday, a group of orcas slammed into the hull and damaged the rudder of a 50-foot sailing yacht off the coast of Morocco. The people aboard were rescued and the vessel was left to sink. It was the fifth time orcas have sunk a boat in the region in recent years, The New York Times reported . There have been dozens of other incidents of damage, though no human deaths.

Shields said “from the whale’s perspective,” it makes sense that they often go after rudders.

“Rudders move and, when humans try to regain steering control, show resistance,” she wrote. “It’s probably more like a game of tug-of-war than a maliciously motivated attack.”

Orcas are highly intelligent and social animals, which means they have “a unique capacity for amusement and playfulness,” she wrote. It also means that new behaviors and fads spread easily among social groups. For example, during a brief in a period in the late 1980s, many orcas near Washington state began wearing dead salmon on their heads , like hats.

Shields’ view is in line with what other orca experts have theorized.

“What I think is probably happening is it’s a playful behavior,” Dr. Deborah Giles, science director at research and advocacy group Wild Orca, said last year . “It’s a social behavior.”

However, one non-playful possibility has gone particularly viral . Biologist Alfredo López Fernandez suggested in a 2022 paper that it all may have started after a female orca known as “White Gladis” had a traumatic encounter with a boat, then began to act in a defensive manner towards other boats.

That theory helped fuel online support for “team orca,” with many people on social media casting the killer whales as revolutionaries fighting back against human destruction of the natural world.

While Shields doesn’t buy the White Gladis theory, she thinks it’s worth examining why people find the idea of an orca uprising so compelling.

“We recognize that we have done enough to the world to deserve orcas attacking us in response,” she wrote.

Justice Dept. makes arrests in North Korean identity theft scheme involving thousands of IT workers

WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department announced Thursday multiple arrests in a series of complex stolen identity theft cases that officials say are part of a wide-ranging scheme that generates enormous proceeds for the North Korean government, including for its weapons program.

The conspiracy involves thousands of North Korean information technology workers who prosecutors say are dispatched by the government to live abroad and who rely on the stolen identities of Americas to obtain remote employment at U.S.-based Fortune 500 companies, jobs that give them access to sensitive corporate data and lucrative paychecks. The companies did not realize the workers were overseas.

The fraud scheme is a way for heavily sanctioned North Korea, which is cut off from the U.S. financial system, to take advantage of a “toxic brew” of converging factors, including a high-tech labor shortage in the U.S. and the proliferation of remote telework, Marshall Miller, the Justice Department's principal associate deputy attorney general, said in an interview.

The Justice Department says the cases are part of a broader strategy to not only prosecute individuals who enable the fraud but also to build partnerships with other countries and to warn private-sector companies of the need to be vigilant — and not duped — about the actual identities of the people they're hiring.

FBI and Justice Department officials launched an initiative in March centered on the fraud scheme and last year announced the seizure of more than a dozen website domains used by North Korean IT workers.

“More and more often, compliance programs at American companies and organizations are on the front lines of protecting our national security,” Miller said. "Corporate compliance and national security are now intertwined like never before.”

The Justice Department said in court documents in one case that more than 300 companies — including a high-end retail chain and a “premier Silicon Valley technology company” — have been affected and that more than $6.8 million in revenue has been generated for the workers, who are based outside of the U.S., including in China and Russia.

Those arrested include an Arizona woman, Christina Marie Chapman, who prosecutors say facilitated the scheme by helping the workers obtain and validate stolen identities, receiving and hosting laptops from U.S. companies who thought they were sending the devices to legitimate employees and helping the workers connect remotely to companies.

According to the indictment, Chapman ran more than one “laptop farm” where U.S. companies sent computers and paychecks to IT workers they did not realize were overseas.

At Chapman’s laptop farms, she allegedly connected overseas IT workers who logged in remotely to company networks so it appeared the logins were coming from the United States. She also is alleged to have received paychecks for the overseas IT workers at her home, forging the beneficiaries’ signatures for transfer abroad and enriching herself by charging monthly fees.

Other defendants include a Ukrainian man, Oleksandr Didenko, who prosecutors say created fake accounts at job search platforms that he then sold to overseas workers who went on to apply for jobs at U.S. companies. He was was arrested in Poland last week, and the Justice Department said it had seized his company's online domain.

A Vietnamese national, Minh Phuong Vong, was arrested in Maryland on charges of fraudulently obtaining a job at a U.S. company that was actually performed by remote workers who posed as him and were based overseas.

It was not immediately clear if any of the three had lawyers.

Separately, the State Department said it was offering a reward for information about certain North Korean IT workers who officials say were assisted by Chapman.

And the FBI, which conducted the investigations, issued a public service announcement that warned companies about the scheme, encouraging them to implement identity verification standards through the hiring process and to educate human resources staff and hiring managers about the threat.
