Dining at the Disney Yacht Club is the ideal blend of upscale and convenient, with plenty of options. Fitting with the feel of the resort, the dining locations have that county club vibe, even the quick service spots. All the while, the food is high quality and delicious!

The Disney Yacht Club also shares a few of our favorite dining locations with its sister, the Disney Beach Club . Get the best of both worlds with dining at this resort, Yacht Club providing class and Beach Club providing fun.

Enjoy a meal in the quiet and privacy of your own room with the Disney Resorts Room Service, excellent food options delivered right to your door. Just press “Dining Options” on your in-room phone, place an order, and the food comes to you.

At the Yacht Club, you’ll find typical Disney food options along with some nautical favorites, fitting with the theme of the resort. A delicious lobster and corn chowder or yummy local baked fish are perfect for seafood-lovers, or splurge on a fabulous Maine lobster roll. If you prefer landlubber cuisine, a brick lemon-herb chicken or a bacon cheeseburger will match your tastes. Buffalo wings and fries are always a good choice too if you need something quick and simple. Kids have plenty of their favorite options as well, like chicken nuggets and cheeseburgers.

There are also some awesome dessert options on the menu! If you missed the chance to hit Beaches & Cream, you can order ice cream up to your room. You can even get an entire cake to share, which is nice for a special occasion.

An 18% gratuity, $5.00 delivery charge and 6.5% sales tax will apply to all delivery orders.

The Market at Ale & Compass

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, The Market at Ale & Compass is the main quick service dining option at the Disney Yacht Club. Simply referred to as The Market , you can get a fast and filling meal any time of the day, and take a few minutes to peruse the souvenirs in the adjoining shop.

Especially if you’re in a hurry, The Market is a great place to take advantage of Mobile Order . This awesome service allows you to use the My Disney Experience app to order ahead at quick service locations. That means your food will be ready when you arrive! Pick up your food as you walk in, and head right back out, or stay and enjoy your meal. Either way, it will save you the time of waiting for the food to be prepared.

One of our go-to items at any quick service location is the Breakfast Bowl, with scrambled eggs, a Mickey waffle, bacon, and potato barrels (tater tots). I like to get these sorts of combo meals because they are easy to split, and definitely filling. A top tip is to avoid overeating, especially at breakfast, so splitting this meal is ideal. Also available, try different breakfast sandwiches and a healthier egg-white wrap if you want something of your own. Plain Mickey waffles are always a delicious option!

Snacks are well stocked at The Market, so pick up fruit, yogurt, or milk and cereal if you like to breakfast light. Plenty of yummy treats await you at the bakery as well, the chocolate-hazelnut croissant being one of my breakfast favorites.

Don’t forget to fill your mug with coffee, juice, tea, or milk!

Lunch and Dinner

For these times, a variety of hot or cold sandwiches and salads make for nice, light meals. The Cuban sandwich is one of the most popular hot items, with ham, slow-roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, mayonnaise, and mustard all on a hoagie roll served with house-made chips. You can also grab a foot-long chili-cheese hotdog, similar to the gourmet hotdogs served at the Beach Club Marketplace.

Cold sandwiches are great to grab in the morning to take to the parks, or to bring out to eat by the pool. You could even pick one up before you leave, giving you a portable lunch if you’re driving home. Among these are the roast beef sandwich, slices of roast beef topped with horseradish cream, caramelized onions, and arugula all on multigrain bread. Vegetarians will love the roasted vegetable sandwich with roasted Portobello mushrooms, zucchini, red bell peppers, and cauliflower dressed with roasted red pepper hummus, topped with slices of fresh tomatoes and grilled onion served on herb Focaccia bread. Both sandwiches come with house-made chips.

Other Options

Kids have the additional options of grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese, a ham sandwich, and an Uncrustable. The children’s meals come with a choice of sides and beverage, making these items a great deal.

The bakery is open all day, so don’t forget to snag something sweet! Sticky buns, chocolate twists, and brownies are all amazing. The bakery also has seasonal cupcakes , each with their own amazing flavor profile and fun decoration!

In the evening, stop by The Market for a variety of beer and wines, which you can enjoy there or take back to your room. If you want something to go, I suggest getting a bottle of wine rather than wine by the glass. You’ll have it for your whole trip, and get more value for your dollar.

There are two main lounges at the Disney Yacht Club – the Ale & Compass Lounge and the Crew’s Cup Lounge. Both are excellent places to relax in the evening, and enjoy a delicious beverage. These are both full bars, so only overage guests are permitted.

The Ale & Compass Lounge

Grab a drink while you wait for your Ale & Compass reservation, or simply lounge in the relaxed atmosphere. The Ale & Compass Lounge is ideal for a relaxing evening or quick bite, all while enjoying a refreshing drink. Opening at 4:00pm and staying open until 10:00pm, this lounge is a great place for an evening hangout.

Healthy-sized appetizers comprise the food options, giving you filling snacks or lighter meals, depending on your plans. Items like the Parker House rolls with assorted spreads – bacon jam, pub cheese, and citrus butter – are great if you just want something to nibble while you drink. Flatbreads and a bacon cheeseburger are perfect for dinner in the lounge, both options are full sized meals.

In addition to the full-bar offerings, the Ale & Compass Lounge has several original cocktails. A twist on a class, the Maple Old Fashioned will give you that New England feeling. Made with Jim Beam Black Extra-aged Bourbon, maple syrup, orange juice, and angostura bitters, this is a great way to change up your regular. For those in a spicy mood, try the Spicy Pomegranate Margarita. Mix Tequila, Ancho Reyes Chile liqueur, pomegranate juice, and simple syrup together to create a zesty and delicious cocktail! A squirt of fresh lime juice on the top adds a bit of tang and cuts the heat.

Enjoy nonalcoholic mixers as well, like a grapefruit spritzer and the No-Kick Mule, just with ginger beer and lime.

Crew’s Cup Lounge

Outside the Yachtsman Steakhouse, the Crew’s Cup Lounge is a nice alternative if you can’t get a reservation at the steakhouse. The Crew’s Cup is also a good place for one of those appetizer as dinner nights, when you’re up to your ears in delicious (but rich!) Disney food.

On the appetizer menu, share a savory and delightful charcuterie and cheese board, coming with different accompaniments depending on the season. For something a little more substantial, the prime rib sliders are perfect, topped with horseradish cream and served on house-made onion rolls. Jumbo shrimp cocktail are always a great option as well, a light snack with just enough protein to get you to your next meal. Have the shrimp with the Yachtsman signature bread to round out a meal.

Crew’s Cup also offers full entrees, so you can add this to your dinner spot list. After 5:00pm, you can get an amazing ten-ounce prime rib, served with mashed potatoes and horseradish cream. For something a little different, try the Twice-fried Green Circle Chicken. Smoked Feta spoon bread and chicken croquettes come with pickled rhubarb and fiddlehead ferns, an interesting take on fried chicken.

You’ll come for the food, but stay for the drinks! Along with an extensive beer, wine, and bourbon selection, Crew’s Cup offers a large variety of signature cocktails. Literally Walk the Plank with an amazing blend of rye whiskey, orange juice, almond liqueur, and lemon juice garnished with Maraschino cherries. Combine the elements of country and tropical vacation with a Whiskey Breeze – Jim Beam Black Extra-aged Bourbon, Cointreau, and lime juice shaken with guava and mango for that aloha vibe. You could also choose to drink your dessert with the Godiva Chocolate Martini. A divine concoction, this martini mixes Godiva chocolate liqueur, Stoli Vanil vodka, Bols White Crème de Cacao, and Frangelico. This sweet treat will warm you from the inside out!

Available for breakfast and dinner, the Ale & Compass Restaurant is a great option for a nice family meal. Especially if you’re looking for a quality table service breakfast, you have to try out the Ale & Compass!

Think breakfast favorites, with an upgrade. The American Breakfast has the right balance of breakfast foods – two eggs any-style, breakfast potatoes, and choice of breakfast meats. Eggs benedict get the added decadence of smoked pork loin, along with herbs and spices in the hollandaise sauce.

While these dishes are amazing, the quick bread breakfast items change the game. No plain French toast here, but instead, we see salted-caramel apple French toast. Two massive pieces of French toast, sliced horizontally, and stuffed with delicious caramel apples. A buttery brown sugar crumble and salted-caramel drizzle tops the slices, completing the picture. However, that isn’t the end. The Dark Chocolate Waffles are to die for! Three thick, circular waffles hold a dried cherry compote, on top of which sits huge dollops of espresso-mascarpone cream, finished with chocolate shavings. It’s a good thing these richly incredible waffles come with a side of breakfast meat to cut through the sweet deliciousness!

Kid’s Meals

For your kiddos, they can get their favorites Mickey waffles or blueberry pancakes if in the mood for something sweet. Scrambled eggs and a mini-breakfast sandwich are great options if they want a savory dish instead.

As always, I recommend splitting an adult meal between two kids. Especially if they want to try something like the chocolate waffles or the French toast, the split is perfect. It actually works out to be cheaper than a kid’s meal!

Ale & Compass does specialty brunches for Easter and Mother’s Day, a great way to treat yourself or Mom! Going to be dining at the Disney Yacht Club during these holidays? You might want to consider an Ale & Compass brunch.

A great mix of surf and turf, Ale & Compass has a dinner menu that will please everyone in your group. To start your meal, try the amazing lobster and corn chowder or roasted garlic shrimp, both coming with house-made items to dip. Smaller plates are available in the form of salads and flatbreads, both meat and vegetables options to fit all dietary needs.

Of the main plates, our favorites would have to be the New England Seafood Pot Pie, braised short ribs, and the brick lemon chicken. For the potpie, it is stuffed full of a plethora of different seafood – shrimp, scallops, lump crab, and the catch of the day. Mixed in are pearl onions, peas, and potatoes, all coated in a creamy seafood cream sauce. The flaky pastry on the outside completes this delectable dish. The short ribs are fall-apart tender, accompanied by a flavorful roasted vegetable mash and barbecue demi sauce for dipping. Alongside the lemon chicken, you’ll love the duck fat-roasted potatoes and veggie sauté. Add truffle fries with a house-made shallot mayo for extra decadence!

If that weren’t enough, the three dessert options will send you right over the edge. Completely plant-based, the mango torte layers mango mousse and spiced lemon pound cake, covered with fresh berries and a raspberry sauce. You could also try the warm apple cobbler served with frozen vanilla custard, or a rich flourless chocolate cake covered in chocolate ganache and offset by a coffee Chantilly cream. Basically, if you’re not rolling out of Ale & Compass, something went wrong with your meal!

Kids have the ability to build their own meals, choosing from a selection of main dishes and sides. Kids that are more adventurous might like the pasta Bolognese or catch of the day, while a cheeseburger is there to save the day for pickier eaters. Side options include sautéed broccolini, macaroni & cheese, corn, and red potatoes, and kid approved! The side menu includes two dessert options – mini ice cream sandwiches and honey-marshmallow s’mores. Kids can choose to get one savory side and one sweet, working their dessert into the price of their meal.

Open only for dinner, the Yachtsman Steakhouse is the signature dining experience at the Disney Yacht Club. Designed to be elegant, upscale, and a true yacht-country club experience, this steakhouse has high quality dishes and a fabulous atmosphere. Yachtsman Steakhouse even has a dress code, heightening the fancy feel of the restaurant.

I recommend making this a date night or adults-only meal. Of course, you can bring your kids, but they need to adhere to the dress code as well. Between that and the sophisticated style of the place, you need to decide if this is the best place to bring your kids.

First Course

Yes, they even refer to the stages of the meal as courses!

First course items include steakhouse staples like a wedge salad, Caesar salad, and French onion soup, all of which are perfect ways to start your evening. If you want to try something a little different, consider the Ahi tuna tartare with a poke vinaigrette and wasabi, or the creamy lobster bisque. You could also get a charcuterie or cheese board to share if you don’t want to fill up before the main meal.

Chef’s Signature Offerings

These three dishes come recommended by the Yachtsman’s chef, and designed to be truly delicious experience. The first is the Chilled Captain’s Tower, a combination of jumbo shrimp, mussels, oyster shooters, scallop ceviche, and charred octopus salad. As the name suggests, the tower is served cold, and is ideal for the true seafood lover. If you prefer your seafood hot, I recommend you try one of the Land and Sea entrees instead.

Both of the other signatures dishes are made to share between two people. The first is a 28-oz prime porterhouse steak, 21-Day dry-aged, with accompaniments of bone marrow, green onion brioche bread, garlic butter, and your choice of two sides. Second is the Chilled Admiral’s Tower, and upgraded version from the Captain’s Tower. In addition to the Captain’s Tower seafood, the Admiral’s Tower also has Maine lobster, snow crab, and tuna tartare. Again, this item is served cold.

Butcher’s Cuts

It is a steakhouse after all, and these steaks are the main event. Filet mignon, prime rib, rib-eye, and New York strip all come cooked to order, with their own incredible seasonings and sauces to bring out the flavor of the meat. Of these, the filet mignon is my personal pick, covered in a cognac-truffle butter that adds to the unctuous nature of the steak.

Each steak comes with your selection of mashed potatoes, potato-leek gratin, sweet potato casserole, house-made French fries, or broccolini. You can also choose to add to your meal one of the signature Steakhouse Sides – truffle macaroni & cheese, creamed spinach, loaded hasselback potato, house-made truffle fries, or braised mushrooms. I suggest getting the broccolini with your meal (you’ll be glad for a vegetable!) and then adding one of the richer steakhouse sides.

Yachtsman Steakhouse offers further enhancements if you want to add to the luxurious nature of your meal. Get your steak Oscar-style, with asparagus, lump crab meat, and a rich béarnaise sauce. You can also add a half lobster, bone marrow, or thick-cut bacon for a little extra richness.

Land and Sea Entrees

Here’s where the hot, succulent seafood pairs with the delicious steakhouse offerings. Whole Maine lobster and Georges Bank Scallops are paired with incredible sauces and accompaniments to bring out their delicate flavors. If you want something unique, you might enjoy the Cervena Elk from the land side, with a parsnip puree and blueberry sauce.

You can also add the bone marrow or half a lobster to the items, or get them Oscar-style.

Yachtsman has several amazing desserts, but my picks would be the chocolate lava cake and the banana bread pudding. Using high quality chocolate, this lava cake is unlike any you’ve ever had. In addition the cake itself, it comes with a refreshing coconut ice cream to cut through the richness and is topping with a raspberry-Chambord Sauce and gingersnap crumbs.

The banana bread pudding is warm, comforting, and delicious. Caramelized bananas have the right touch of sweetness, as does the caramel rum sauce on top. A side of butter pecan ice cream ties the whole dessert together.

Disney Yacht and Beach Club Dining

While two separate resorts, the Disney Yacht Club shares a few dining locations with the Disney Beach Club. Of course, if you’re staying at either, it is easy to pop over to the other resort to enjoy the dining options. After all, the resorts share a pool area, they’re that close together!

However, two dining spots are right in the middle of the Disney Yacht & Beach Club that you’ll want to check out!

Hurricane Hanna’s Waterside Bar and Grill

Out by the pool, Hurricane Hanna’s is the main pool bar and eatery for Stormalong Bay. This is a great place for you to get a poolside lunch or refreshing beverage, especially if you don’t want to have to trek back to your room. Don’t let the fact that this is a pool bar fool you, Hurricane Hanna’s has some delicious options!

Much like other pool bars, Hurricane Hanna’s has lighter fare, which is what you want out of a meal by the pool. Grab a cool Greek or Caesar salad, perfect for a hot day and a light lunch. If you want to make your salad a bit more substantial, you can add chicken for that extra protein. The rest of the savory items are sandwiches, again ideal for poolside eating. The Italian Focaccia and turkey and Swiss sandwiches are both delicious, but our favorite is the seafood roll. Fresh seafood comes tossed in a citrusy mayo dressing, with just the right amount of zing. All three sandwiches come with house-made chips, which gives just the right touch to the meal.

What would a bar be without amazing drinks! Hurricane Hanna’s has two specialty cocktails you’re going to love – the Category 5 and Storm Chaser. Category 5 has that pirate feel that will have you singing Yo-ho, yo-ho, a pirate’s life for me! With Captain Morgan spiced rum, crème de banana, peach schnapps, you’ll be feeling the island vibes in no time; add in a mix of orange and pineapple juices and a splash of grenadine to balance out the drink. If that wasn’t enough, the Category 5 also comes with a float of Gosling’s 151 Rum.

Meanwhile, the Storm Chaser is made with vodka, Bacardi superior rum, blue curacao, and sweet-and sour. A splash of Sprite brings a touch of sweetness and effervesce for a tropical buzz. Between these drinks and the beaches of Stormalong Bay, you’ll forget you’re not on a cruise !

Aside from these drinks, enjoy plenty of other cocktails on the rocks or frozen, as well as a wide variety of beer and wines. We recommend the Sunshine Margarita, a Disney poolside staple, or the Frosé, a frozen concoction of rosé mixed with vodka. Both are refreshing, and perfect for a sunny day by the pool.

For the kids and nondrinkers in your group, there are sweet and cool smoothie options as well as some virgin version of your favorites.

Beaches & Cream Soda Shop has been one of my favorites for as long as I can remember, and it is still one of my favorite places to visit. I can’t tell you how many fond memories I have of sitting out in front of the quick service window, waiting for our No Way José to appear. And then watching it disappear in a matter of minutes! Our family is decided ice-cream lovers, and Beaches & Cream never disappoints.

Beaches & Cream opens every day at 11:30am, providing a place to get a fun and delicious diner meal for lunch or dinner. You can always skip straight to dessert…many people do! Beaches & Cream is also open until 9:00pm, making it a great place to stop after a day at Epcot or on a walk around the boardwalk. This is usually when we stop by, after touring through the other resorts in the area or playing a round of mini-golf. It’s a great way to finish an evening!

Beaches & Cream has a reputation for fantastic and fanciful desserts, but that’s not all there is to this location. The menu features delicious savory foods as well, combining diner favorites with a touch of table service sophistication. A nostalgic, 1950s diner feel makes this bright and fun location just a great place to hang out. Especially with the recent remodel, the larger space and new décor adds something to the atmosphere.

Diner Delights

Start with a classic cheeseburger, grilled cheese, or French dip sandwich. You could also go for two of the most popular items, the cheddar bacon-ranch chicken sandwich or house-made Reuben. It wouldn’t be a diner if you couldn’t get French fries or onion rings on the side, but Beaches & Cream added tater tots to their menu with the reopening! All your favorite loaded fry options now come in tot form, so if you’re a tot lover, you have to check these out.

Even though they are not listed on the menu right now, in the past Beaches & Cream has had a variety of salads to balance out the sandwich options, as well as a few seafood dishes. What’s great about Disney dining is that they are always rotating your options to keep things fresh, so be on the lookout for new additions!

These incredible sweet treats will have you feeling like a kid again, and cause the actual kids in your group to go bananas!

To begin, you can get a classic strawberry shortcake or brownie a la mode. While both are delicious, these items are definitely elsewhere around Disney World , so we suggest going for one of the unique options that makes Beaches & Cream special. You’ll find these delicious delights on the Sundaes on the Beach section of the menu, and you’re going to be overwhelmed by your choices!

As I mentioned before, we are partial to the No Way José, an out of this world peanut butter and hot fudge masterpiece that features both chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Not enough? How about some chocolate pieces and whipped cream on top? Perfect.

The Fudge Mud Slide and Snickers Sundae are both similar to the No Way José, with three scoops of ice cream each, covered in chocolate, and topped with cookie pieces and Snickers bars respectively. You can also go for classics like a banana split or three-scoop sundae, giving you the chance to build your own delicious dessert

Even with all these other choices, the real star of this show is the infamous Kitchen Sink . Getting its name from the phrase “everything but the kitchen sink,” you won’t believe it until you see it. With eight scoops of ice cream, all the toppings in the store , huge chunks of cake, and an entire can of whipped cream , this sundae is no joke. The menu says that it serves four, but it really feeds more like six or eight. Recently, Beaches & Cream has added a Chocolate Lovers and Neapolitan option as well, which focuses more on these flavors.

Grabbing something to go? You can get a plain scoop of hand-dipped ice cream on cone or in a cup, or slurp up a rich milkshake. These are great if you’re planning to eat or drink as you walk, while meeting the need for a sweet treat.

No matter what dining option you choose at the Disney Yacht Club, you’re going to leave satisfied…and wanting to come back for more!

Probably the best convenience store in town, right in our own building! This store has saved me countless of times - when I ran out of eggs, vinegar to dye Easter eggs, a quick ice cream snack at night, extra taco shells for a party, etc. They seem to have everything I need when I need it! Also, great friendly team - always a pleasure to say hello to Martine in the store and make some light conversation.

Great wine selection. They always have the varieties of French wines I enjoy. Well stocked and super convenient for the buildings residents.

Great customer service. Fresh made breakfast sandwiches. I love this place. Super convenient and easy to get to.

Wow this place is certainly overpriced. But I guess they only game in town if you don't wanna walk several blocks. But good grief, they could trim the prices down just a little.

This shop is located at the bottom of the Yacht Club at Brickell apartments. Early in the morning, you can smell the coffee brewing and pastries warming right when you get off the elevator and through the lobby. For me, it was a savior many mornings when I needed a caffeine fix! I'm not sure where their Cuban pastries come from, but they're definitely not the best I've ever had. You also could never quite know what might be available on any given day. Not sure if they always didn't order enough or just didn't really care, but they usually had either empanadas or guava pastries, but that's about it. They also make sandwiches and we tried the Cuban on a couple of occasions. It was ok, but again, I'd stick with the coffee. Straight up Cuban style! What's unique about the rest of the store is that they sell a lot of international items like European chocolates you really don't see anywhere else, as well as lots of snacks a step above regular 7-11 fare, juices, beer, wine, and little household supplies you might need while living in one of the apartments above. Need an ATM? There's one of those too! Overall, it's good for quick fixes, especially of the coffee sort! It's a nice amenity for residents of the building. Not sure why else you would venture here.

Extremely overpriced. Similar to buying something at the airport, where they gouge you with their prices. Items are often not even marked with prices. Also, the person there doesn't speak a lick of English. How do you hire someone who doesn't speak English when close to half of the residents in the building speak English?! One good thing: they take extra care when making your food and drinks.

Yacht Club de Monaco focuses on the future of the yachting industry

TURIN, Italy, May 22, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With a fleet where the average age is 23 years, the market currently comprises 10,729 motor yachts and 1,897 sailing yachts. There are 1,166 projects under construction or on order with Italy dominating this aspect on 51.4%, even though the country only represents 40.1% of global production in gross tonnage terms. Superyacht production has doubled in the last decade with 132 in-build. Germany leads on average length of superyachts in construction with 94.4m, followed by the Netherlands on 62m. Yachts customised by their owners represent 63.3% of the global fleet. It is the picture drawn at the Cluster Yachting Monaco which convened a hundred yachting professionals and a fleet of yachts moored in the YCM Marina for its first Open Day 2024. The meeting was a chance to take stock of the sector as it stands and make forecasts for 2030. “The industry must set itself apart in the best possible way. Our Cluster is always cited as a reference and is one of the best in the world. We must keep up the momentum,” began Bernard d’Alessandri, Cluster Yachting Monaco President and General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco.

After a presentation on statistics for the sector in 2024 by Katia Damborsky from Boat International, there were two sessions in the form of panels dealing with yachting’s evolution in the immediate future with a 360° vision of the different players involved and their commitment to sustainability. All delegates also had an opportunity to visit the 15 yachts moored in the YCM Marina, presented by Sanlorenzo, Oceanco, Novamarine, RIB, Riva, Pardo, Saialia Yachts, Baltic Yachts, Dominator Yacht, Costruzioni Navali Tigullio, Palmer Johnson, Overmarine, Feadship and Philip Zepter Yachts.

International trends for 2024 show a marked preference for diesel engines, far outperforming hybrid and diesel/electric engines. The event also discussed the increase in use of Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (HVO). Feadship has taken another step towards its goal to produce carbon neutral superyachts by 2030, with the Obsidian, an 84.2m superyacht that can run on a HVO non-fossil diesel fuel. Not to be out done Sanlorenzo is also testing this new clean emission biofuel on the 44m Lammouche.

Optimising hull designs for better fuel efficiency, cleaner more efficient engines, hybrid, diesel-electric, and electric engines, rigid sails, HVO/bio fuels, solar energy, hydrogen / green hydrogen, methanol / green methanol and sustainable innovations are all solutions available now to improve vessel sustainability. What will the sector look like by 2030? A range of panellists attempted to answer this question by making overall projections for the industry. “In my opinion the 360° approach is the most interesting,” observed Artur Poloczanski, Public Relations Director at Sunreef. “You have to know how to optimise a yacht to achieve the sustainability objective.”

On 10th June 2024, Cluster Yachting Monaco members will meet again to celebrate ten years of the association. Founded in 2014 by Bernard d'Alessandri, the Cluster Yachting Monaco is one of the first in the world solely intended for yachting sector stakeholders. It is in line with actions taken by a government-led committee (Conseil Stratégique pour l’attractivité) with the aim being to provide a platform for dialogue with decision-making authorities. Defined as a centre of competitiveness uniting a hundred interdependent organisations and companies working in the same sector, the Cluster has proved to be a unifying force.

How To Synthesise The Existing Research (With Examples)

One of the most common mistakes that students make when writing a literature review is that they err on the side of describing the existing literature rather than providing a critical synthesis of it. In this post, we’ll unpack what exactly synthesis means and show you how to craft a strong literature synthesis using practical examples.

What does “synthesis” actually mean?

As a starting point, let’s quickly define what exactly we mean when we use the term “synthesis” within the context of a literature review.

Simply put, literature synthesis means going beyond just describing what everyone has said and found. Instead, synthesis is about bringing together all the information from various sources to present a cohesive assessment of the current state of knowledge in relation to your study’s research aims and questions .

Put another way, a good synthesis tells the reader exactly where the current research is “at” in terms of the topic you’re interested in – specifically, what’s known , what’s not , and where there’s a need for more research .

So, how do you go about doing this?

Well, there’s no “one right way” when it comes to literature synthesis, but we’ve found that it’s particularly useful to ask yourself five key questions when you’re working on your literature review. Having done so, you can then address them more articulately within your actual write up. So, let’s take a look at each of these questions.

1. Points Of Agreement

The first question that you need to ask yourself is: “Overall, what things seem to be agreed upon by the vast majority of the literature?”

For example, if your research aim is to identify which factors contribute toward job satisfaction, you’ll need to identify which factors are broadly agreed upon and “settled” within the literature. Naturally, there may at times be some lone contrarian that has a radical viewpoint , but, provided that the vast majority of researchers are in agreement, you can put these random outliers to the side. That is, of course, unless your research aims to explore a contrarian viewpoint and there’s a clear justification for doing so.

Identifying what’s broadly agreed upon is an essential starting point for synthesising the literature, because you generally don’t want (or need) to reinvent the wheel or run down a road investigating something that is already well established . So, addressing this question first lays a foundation of “settled” knowledge.

2. Points Of Disagreement

Related to the previous point, but on the other end of the spectrum, is the equally important question: “Where do the disagreements lie?” .

In other words, which things are not well agreed upon by current researchers? It’s important to clarify here that by disagreement, we don’t mean that researchers are (necessarily) fighting over it – just that there are relatively mixed findings within the empirical research , with no firm consensus amongst researchers.

This is a really important question to address as these “disagreements” will often set the stage for the research gap(s). In other words, they provide clues regarding potential opportunities for further research, which your study can then (hopefully) contribute toward filling. 3. Key Theories

The next question you need to ask yourself is: “Which key theories seem to be coming up repeatedly?” .

Within most research spaces, you’ll find that you keep running into a handful of key theories that are referred to over and over again. Apart from identifying these theories, you’ll also need to think about how they’re connected to each other. Specifically, you need to ask yourself:

Are they all covering the same ground or do they have different focal points or underlying assumptions ?
Do some of them feed into each other and if so, is there an opportunity to integrate them into a more cohesive theory?
Do some of them pull in different directions ? If so, why might this be?
Do all of the theories define the key concepts and variables in the same way, or is there some disconnect? If so, what’s the impact of this ?

Simply put, you’ll need to pay careful attention to the key theories in your research area, as they will need to feature within your theoretical framework , which will form a critical component within your final literature review. This will set the foundation for your entire study, so it’s essential that you be critical in this area of your literature synthesis.

4. Contexts

The next question that you need to address in your literature synthesis is an important one, and that is: “Which contexts have (and have not) been covered by the existing research?” .

For example, sticking with our earlier hypothetical topic (factors that impact job satisfaction), you may find that most of the research has focused on white-collar , management-level staff within a primarily Western context, but little has been done on blue-collar workers in an Eastern context. Given the significant socio-cultural differences between these two groups, this is an important observation, as it could present a contextual research gap .

In practical terms, this means that you’ll need to carefully assess the context of each piece of literature that you’re engaging with, especially the empirical research (i.e., studies that have collected and analysed real-world data). Ideally, you should keep notes regarding the context of each study in some sort of catalogue or sheet, so that you can easily make sense of this before you start the writing phase. 5. Methodological Approaches

Last but certainly not least, you need to ask yourself the question: “What types of research methodologies have (and haven’t) been used?”

For example, you might find that most studies have approached the topic using qualitative methods such as interviews and thematic analysis. Alternatively, you might find that most studies have used quantitative methods such as online surveys and statistical analysis.

But why does this matter?

Well, it can run in one of two potential directions . If you find that the vast majority of studies use a specific methodological approach, this could provide you with a firm foundation on which to base your own study’s methodology . In other words, you can use the methodologies of similar studies to inform (and justify) your own study’s research design .

On the other hand, you might argue that the lack of diverse methodological approaches presents a research gap , and therefore your study could contribute toward filling that gap by taking a different approach. For example, taking a qualitative approach to a research area that is typically approached quantitatively. Of course, if you’re going to go against the methodological grain, you’ll need to provide a strong justification for why your proposed approach makes sense. Nevertheless, it is something worth at least considering.

Regardless of which route you opt for, you need to pay careful attention to the methodologies used in the relevant studies and provide at least some discussion about this in your write-up. Again, it’s useful to keep track of this on some sort of spreadsheet or catalogue as you digest each article, so consider grabbing a copy of our free literature catalogue if you don’t have anything in place.

Looking at the methodologies of existing, similar studies will help you develop a strong research methodology for your own study.

Bringing It All Together

Alright, so we’ve looked at five important questions that you need to ask (and answer) to help you develop a strong synthesis within your literature review. To recap, these are:

Which things are broadly agreed upon within the current research?
Which things are the subject of disagreement (or at least, present mixed findings)?
Which theories seem to be central to your research topic and how do they relate or compare to each other?
Which contexts have (and haven’t) been covered?
Which methodological approaches are most common?

Importantly, you’re not just asking yourself these questions for the sake of asking them – they’re not just a reflection exercise. You need to weave your answers to them into your actual literature review when you write it up. How exactly you do this will vary from project to project depending on the structure you opt for, but you’ll still need to address them within your literature review, whichever route you go.

The best approach is to spend some time actually writing out your answers to these questions, as opposed to just thinking about them in your head. Putting your thoughts onto paper really helps you flesh out your thinking . As you do this, don’t just write down the answers – instead, think about what they mean in terms of the research gap you’ll present , as well as the methodological approach you’ll take . Your literature synthesis needs to lay the groundwork for these two things, so it’s essential that you link all of it together in your mind, and of course, on paper.

When you write a literature review or essay, you have to go beyond just summarizing the articles you’ve read – you need to synthesize the literature to show how it all fits together (and how your own research fits in).

Synthesizing simply means combining. Instead of summarizing the main points of each source in turn, you put together the ideas and findings of multiple sources in order to make an overall point.

At the most basic level, this involves looking for similarities and differences between your sources. Your synthesis should show the reader where the sources overlap and where they diverge.

Unsynthesized Example

Franz (2008) studied undergraduate online students. He looked at 17 females and 18 males and found that none of them liked APA. According to Franz, the evidence suggested that all students are reluctant to learn citations style. Perez (2010) also studies undergraduate students. She looked at 42 females and 50 males and found that males were significantly more inclined to use citation software ( p < .05). Findings suggest that females might graduate sooner. Goldstein (2012) looked at British undergraduates. Among a sample of 50, all females, all confident in their abilities to cite and were eager to write their dissertations.

Synthesized Example

Studies of undergraduate students reveal conflicting conclusions regarding relationships between advanced scholarly study and citation efficacy. Although Franz (2008) found that no participants enjoyed learning citation style, Goldstein (2012) determined in a larger study that all participants watched felt comfortable citing sources, suggesting that variables among participant and control group populations must be examined more closely. Although Perez (2010) expanded on Franz’s original study with a larger, more diverse sample…

Step 1: Organize your sources

After collecting the relevant literature, you’ve got a lot of information to work through, and no clear idea of how it all fits together.

Before you can start writing, you need to organize your notes in a way that allows you to see the relationships between sources.

One way to begin synthesizing the literature is to put your notes into a table. Depending on your topic and the type of literature you’re dealing with, there are a couple of different ways you can organize this.

Summary table

A summary table collates the key points of each source under consistent headings. This is a good approach if your sources tend to have a similar structure – for instance, if they’re all empirical papers.

Each row in the table lists one source, and each column identifies a specific part of the source. You can decide which headings to include based on what’s most relevant to the literature you’re dealing with.

For example, you might include columns for things like aims, methods, variables, population, sample size, and conclusion.

For each study, you briefly summarize each of these aspects. You can also include columns for your own evaluation and analysis.

The summary table gives you a quick overview of the key points of each source. This allows you to group sources by relevant similarities, as well as noticing important differences or contradictions in their findings.

Synthesis matrix

A synthesis matrix is useful when your sources are more varied in their purpose and structure – for example, when you’re dealing with books and essays making various different arguments about a topic.

Each column in the table lists one source. Each row is labeled with a specific concept, topic or theme that recurs across all or most of the sources.

Then, for each source, you summarize the main points or arguments related to the theme.

The purposes of the table is to identify the common points that connect the sources, as well as identifying points where they diverge or disagree.

Step 2: Outline your structure

Now you should have a clear overview of the main connections and differences between the sources you’ve read. Next, you need to decide how you’ll group them together and the order in which you’ll discuss them.

For shorter papers, your outline can just identify the focus of each paragraph; for longer papers, you might want to divide it into sections with headings.

There are a few different approaches you can take to help you structure your synthesis.

If your sources cover a broad time period, and you found patterns in how researchers approached the topic over time, you can organize your discussion chronologically .

That doesn’t mean you just summarize each paper in chronological order; instead, you should group articles into time periods and identify what they have in common, as well as signalling important turning points or developments in the literature.

If the literature covers various different topics, you can organize it thematically .

That means that each paragraph or section focuses on a specific theme and explains how that theme is approached in the literature.

If you’re drawing on literature from various different fields or they use a wide variety of research methods, you can organize your sources methodologically .

That means grouping together studies based on the type of research they did and discussing the findings that emerged from each method.

If your topic involves a debate between different schools of thought, you can organize it theoretically .

That means comparing the different theories that have been developed and grouping together papers based on the position or perspective they take on the topic, as well as evaluating which arguments are most convincing.

Step 3: Write paragraphs with topic sentences

What sets a synthesis apart from a summary is that it combines various sources. The easiest way to think about this is that each paragraph should discuss a few different sources, and you should be able to condense the overall point of the paragraph into one sentence.

This is called a topic sentence , and it usually appears at the start of the paragraph. The topic sentence signals what the whole paragraph is about; every sentence in the paragraph should be clearly related to it.

A topic sentence can be a simple summary of the paragraph’s content:

“Early research on [x] focused heavily on [y].”

For an effective synthesis, you can use topic sentences to link back to the previous paragraph, highlighting a point of debate or critique:

“Several scholars have pointed out the flaws in this approach.” “While recent research has attempted to address the problem, many of these studies have methodological flaws that limit their validity.”

By using topic sentences, you can ensure that your paragraphs are coherent and clearly show the connections between the articles you are discussing.

As you write your paragraphs, avoid quoting directly from sources: use your own words to explain the commonalities and differences that you found in the literature.

Don’t try to cover every single point from every single source – the key to synthesizing is to extract the most important and relevant information and combine it to give your reader an overall picture of the state of knowledge on your topic.

Step 4: Revise, edit and proofread

Like any other piece of academic writing, synthesizing literature doesn’t happen all in one go – it involves redrafting, revising, editing and proofreading your work.

Checklist for Synthesis

Do I introduce the paragraph with a clear, focused topic sentence?
Do I discuss more than one source in the paragraph?
Do I mention only the most relevant findings, rather than describing every part of the studies?
Do I discuss the similarities or differences between the sources, rather than summarizing each source in turn?
Do I put the findings or arguments of the sources in my own words?
Is the paragraph organized around a single idea?
Is the paragraph directly relevant to my research question or topic?
Is there a logical transition from this paragraph to the next one?

Basics of Synthesis

As you incorporate published writing into your own writing, you should aim for synthesis of the material.

Synthesizing requires critical reading and thinking in order to compare different material, highlighting similarities, differences, and connections. When writers synthesize successfully, they present new ideas based on interpretations of other evidence or arguments. You can also think of synthesis as an extension of—or a more complicated form of—analysis. One main difference is that synthesis involves multiple sources, while analysis often focuses on one source.

Conceptually, it can be helpful to think about synthesis existing at both the local (or paragraph) level and the global (or paper) level.

Local Synthesis

Local synthesis occurs at the paragraph level when writers connect individual pieces of evidence from multiple sources to support a paragraph’s main idea and advance a paper’s thesis statement. A common example in academic writing is a scholarly paragraph that includes a main idea, evidence from multiple sources, and analysis of those multiple sources together.

Global Synthesis

Global synthesis occurs at the paper (or, sometimes, section) level when writers connect ideas across paragraphs or sections to create a new narrative whole. A literature review , which can either stand alone or be a section/chapter within a capstone, is a common example of a place where global synthesis is necessary. However, in almost all academic writing, global synthesis is created by and sometimes referred to as good cohesion and flow.

In the synthesis step of a literature review, researchers analyze and integrate information from selected sources to identify patterns and themes. So, how can you create paragraphs within your literature review that demonstrates your knowledge of the scholarship that has been done in your field of study?

You will need to present a synthesis of the texts you read.

What is synthesis?

Synthesis is an important element of academic writing, demonstrating comprehension, analysis, evaluation and original creation.

With synthesis you extract content from different sources to create an original text. While paraphrase and summary maintain the structure of the given source(s), with synthesis you create a new structure.

The sources will provide different perspectives and evidence on a topic. They will be put together when agreeing, contrasted when disagreeing. The sources must be referenced.

Perfect your synthesis by showing the flow of your reasoning, expressing critical evaluation of the sources and drawing conclusions.

When you synthesise think of "using strategic thinking to resolve a problem requiring the integration of diverse pieces of information around a structuring theme" (Mateos and Sole 2009, p448).

Synthesis is a complex activity, which requires a high degree of comprehension and active engagement with the subject. As you progress in higher education, so increase the expectations on your abilities to synthesise.

How to synthesise in a literature review:

Identify themes/issues you'd like to discuss in the literature review. Think of an outline.

Read the literature and identify these themes/issues.

Critically analyse the texts asking: how does the text I'm reading relate to the other texts I've read on the same topic? Is it in agreement? Does it differ in its perspective? Is it stronger or weaker? How does it differ (could be scope, methods, year of publication etc.). Draw your conclusions on the state of the literature on the topic.

Start writing your literature review, structuring it according to the outline you planned.

Put together sources stating the same point; contrast sources presenting counter-arguments or different points.

Present your critical analysis.

Always provide the references.

The best synthesis requires a "recursive process" whereby you read the source texts, identify relevant parts, take notes, produce drafts, re-read the source texts, revise your text, re-write... (Mateos and Sole, 2009).

What is good synthesis?

The quality of your synthesis can be assessed considering the following (Mateos and Sole, 2009, p439):

Integration and connection of the information from the source texts around a structuring theme.

Selection of ideas necessary for producing the synthesis.

Appropriateness of the interpretation.

Elaboration of the content.

Synthesis:

Animal experimentation is a subject of heated debate. Some argue that painful experiments should be banned. Indeed it has been demonstrated that such experiments make animals suffer physically and psychologically (Chowdhury 2012; Panatta and Hudson 2016). On the other hand, it has been argued that animal experimentation can save human lives and reduce harm on humans (Smith 2008). This argument is only valid for toxicological testing, not for tests that, for example, merely improve the efficacy of a cosmetic (Turner 2015). It can be suggested that animal experimentation should be regulated to only allow toxicological risk assessment, and the suffering to the animals should be minimised.

Synthesis: What is it?

First, let's be perfectly clear about what synthesizing your research isn't :

- It isn't just summarizing the material you read
- It isn't generating a collection of annotations or comments (like an annotated bibliography)
- It isn't compiling a report on every single thing ever written in relation to your topic

When you synthesize your research, your job is to help your reader understand the current state of the conversation on your topic, relative to your research question. That may include doing the following:

- Selecting and using representative work on the topic
- Identifying and discussing trends in published data or results
- Identifying and explaining the impact of common features (study populations, interventions, etc.) that appear frequently in the literature
- Explaining controversies, disputes, or central issues in the literature that are relevant to your research question
- Identifying gaps in the literature, where more research is needed
- Establishing the discussion to which your own research contributes and demonstrating the value of your contribution

Essentially, you're telling your reader where they are (and where you are) in the scholarly conversation about your project.

Synthesis: How do I do it?

Synthesis, step by step.

This is what you need to do before you write your review.

Identify and clearly describe your research question (you may find the Formulating PICOT Questions table at the Additional Resources tab helpful).
Collect sources relevant to your research question.
Organize and describe the sources you've found -- your job is to identify what types of sources you've collected (reviews, clinical trials, etc.), identify their purpose (what are they measuring, testing, or trying to discover?), determine the level of evidence they represent (see the Levels of Evidence table at the Additional Resources tab ), and briefly explain their major findings . Use a Research Table to document this step.
Study the information you've put in your Research Table and examine your collected sources, looking for similarities and differences . Pay particular attention to populations , methods (especially relative to levels of evidence), and findings .
Analyze what you learn in (4) using a tool like a Synthesis Table. Your goal is to identify relevant themes, trends, gaps, and issues in the research. Your literature review will collect the results of this analysis and explain them in relation to your research question.

Analysis tips

- Sometimes, what you don't find in the literature is as important as what you do find -- look for questions that the existing research hasn't answered yet.
- If any of the sources you've collected refer to or respond to each other, keep an eye on how they're related -- it may provide a clue as to whether or not study results have been successfully replicated.
- Sorting your collected sources by level of evidence can provide valuable insight into how a particular topic has been covered, and it may help you to identify gaps worth addressing in your own work.

When you look for areas where your sources agree or disagree and try to draw broader conclusions about your topic based on what your sources say, you are engaging in synthesis. Writing a research paper usually requires synthesizing the available sources in order to provide new insight or a different perspective into your particular topic (as opposed to simply restating what each individual source says about your research topic).

Note that synthesizing is not the same as summarizing.

A summary restates the information in one or more sources without providing new insight or reaching new conclusions.
A synthesis draws on multiple sources to reach a broader conclusion.

There are two types of syntheses: explanatory syntheses and argumentative syntheses . Explanatory syntheses seek to bring sources together to explain a perspective and the reasoning behind it. Argumentative syntheses seek to bring sources together to make an argument. Both types of synthesis involve looking for relationships between sources and drawing conclusions.

In order to successfully synthesize your sources, you might begin by grouping your sources by topic and looking for connections. For example, if you were researching the pros and cons of encouraging healthy eating in children, you would want to separate your sources to find which ones agree with each other and which ones disagree.

After you have a good idea of what your sources are saying, you want to construct your body paragraphs in a way that acknowledges different sources and highlights where you can draw new conclusions.

As you continue synthesizing, here are a few points to remember:

Don’t force a relationship between sources if there isn’t one. Not all of your sources have to complement one another.
Do your best to highlight the relationships between sources in very clear ways.
Don’t ignore any outliers in your research. It’s important to take note of every perspective (even those that disagree with your broader conclusions).

Example Syntheses

Below are two examples of synthesis: one where synthesis is NOT utilized well, and one where it is.

Parents are always trying to find ways to encourage healthy eating in their children. Elena Pearl Ben-Joseph, a doctor and writer for KidsHealth , encourages parents to be role models for their children by not dieting or vocalizing concerns about their body image. The first popular diet began in 1863. William Banting named it the “Banting” diet after himself, and it consisted of eating fruits, vegetables, meat, and dry wine. Despite the fact that dieting has been around for over a hundred and fifty years, parents should not diet because it hinders children’s understanding of healthy eating.

In this sample paragraph, the paragraph begins with one idea then drastically shifts to another. Rather than comparing the sources, the author simply describes their content. This leads the paragraph to veer in an different direction at the end, and it prevents the paragraph from expressing any strong arguments or conclusions.

An example of a stronger synthesis can be found below.

Parents are always trying to find ways to encourage healthy eating in their children. Different scientists and educators have different strategies for promoting a well-rounded diet while still encouraging body positivity in children. David R. Just and Joseph Price suggest in their article “Using Incentives to Encourage Healthy Eating in Children” that children are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables if they are given a reward (855-856). Similarly, Elena Pearl Ben-Joseph, a doctor and writer for Kids Health , encourages parents to be role models for their children. She states that “parents who are always dieting or complaining about their bodies may foster these same negative feelings in their kids. Try to keep a positive approach about food” (Ben-Joseph). Martha J. Nepper and Weiwen Chai support Ben-Joseph’s suggestions in their article “Parents’ Barriers and Strategies to Promote Healthy Eating among School-age Children.” Nepper and Chai note, “Parents felt that patience, consistency, educating themselves on proper nutrition, and having more healthy foods available in the home were important strategies when developing healthy eating habits for their children.” By following some of these ideas, parents can help their children develop healthy eating habits while still maintaining body positivity.

In this example, the author puts different sources in conversation with one another. Rather than simply describing the content of the sources in order, the author uses transitions (like "similarly") and makes the relationship between the sources evident.

Chapter 7: Synthesizing Sources

At the conclusion of this chapter, you will be able to:

7.1 Overview of synthesizing

7.1.1 putting the pieces together.

Combining separate elements into a whole is the dictionary definition of synthesis. It is a way to make connections among and between numerous and varied source materials. A literature review is not an annotated bibliography, organized by title, author, or date of publication. Rather, it is grouped by topic to create a whole view of the literature relevant to your research question.

Your synthesis must demonstrate a critical analysis of the papers you collected as well as your ability to integrate the results of your analysis into your own literature review. Each paper collected should be critically evaluated and weighed for “adequacy, appropriateness, and thoroughness” ( Garrard, 2017 ) before inclusion in your own review. Papers that do not meet this criteria likely should not be included in your literature review.

Begin the synthesis process by creating a grid, table, or an outline where you will summarize, using common themes you have identified and the sources you have found. The summary grid or outline will help you compare and contrast the themes so you can see the relationships among them as well as areas where you may need to do more searching. Whichever method you choose, this type of organization will help you to both understand the information you find and structure the writing of your review. Remember, although “the means of summarizing can vary, the key at this point is to make sure you understand what you’ve found and how it relates to your topic and research question” ( Bennard et al., 2014 ).

Figure 7.2 shows an example of a simplified literature summary table. In this example, individual journal citations are listed in rows. Table column headings read: purpose, methods, and results.

As you read through the material you gather, look for common themes as they may provide the structure for your literature review. And, remember, research is an iterative process: it is not unusual to go back and search information sources for more material.

At one extreme, if you are claiming, ‘There are no prior publications on this topic,’ it is more likely that you have not found them yet and may need to broaden your search. At another extreme, writing a complete literature review can be difficult with a well-trod topic. Do not cite it all; instead cite what is most relevant. If that still leaves too much to include, be sure to reference influential sources…as well as high-quality work that clearly connects to the points you make. ( Klingner, Scanlon, & Pressley, 2005 ).

7.2 Creating a summary table

Literature reviews can be organized sequentially or by topic, theme, method, results, theory, or argument. It’s important to develop categories that are meaningful and relevant to your research question. Take detailed notes on each article and use a consistent format for capturing all the information each article provides. These notes and the summary table can be done manually, using note cards. However, given the amount of information you will be recording, an electronic file created in a word processing or spreadsheet is more manageable. Examples of fields you may want to capture in your notes include:

Authors’ names
Article title
Publication year
Main purpose of the article
Methodology or research design
Participants
Measurement
Conclusions

Other fields that will be useful when you begin to synthesize the sum total of your research:

Specific details of the article or research that are especially relevant to your study
Key terms and definitions
Strengths or weaknesses in research design
Relationships to other studies
Possible gaps in the research or literature (for example, many research articles conclude with the statement “more research is needed in this area”)
Finally, note how closely each article relates to your topic. You may want to rank these as high, medium, or low relevance. For papers that you decide not to include, you may want to note your reasoning for exclusion, such as ‘small sample size’, ‘local case study,’ or ‘lacks evidence to support assertion.’

7.2.1 Creating a Summary Table

7.3 Creating a summary outline

An alternate way to organize your articles for synthesis it to create an outline. After you have collected the articles you intend to use (and have put aside the ones you won’t be using), it’s time to identify the conclusions that can be drawn from the articles as a group.

Based on your review of the collected articles, group them by categories. You may wish to further organize them by topic and then chronologically or alphabetically by author. For each topic or subtopic you identified during your critical analysis of the paper, determine what those papers have in common. Likewise, determine which ones in the group differ. If there are contradictory findings, you may be able to identify methodological or theoretical differences that could account for the contradiction (for example, differences in population demographics). Determine what general conclusions you can report about the topic or subtopic as the entire group of studies relate to it. For example, you may have several studies that agree on outcome, such as ‘hands on learning is best for science in elementary school’ or that ‘continuing education is the best method for updating nursing certification.’ In that case, you may want to organize by methodology used in the studies rather than by outcome.

Organize your outline in a logical order and prepare to write the first draft of your literature review. That order might be from broad to more specific, or it may be sequential or chronological, going from foundational literature to more current. Remember, “an effective literature review need not denote the entire historical record, but rather establish the raison d’etre for the current study and in doing so cite that literature distinctly pertinent for theoretical, methodological, or empirical reasons.” ( Milardo, 2015, p. 22 ).

As you organize the summarized documents into a logical structure, you are also appraising and synthesizing complex information from multiple sources. Your literature review is the result of your research that synthesizes new and old information and creates new knowledge.

Creating a topical outline

An alternative way to organize your articles for synthesis it to create an outline. After you have collected the articles you intend to use (and have put aside the ones you won’t be using), it’s time to extract as much as possible from the facts provided in those articles. You are starting your research project without a lot of hard facts on the topics you want to study, and by using the literature reviews provided in academic journal articles, you can gain a lot of knowledge about a topic in a short period of time.

As you read an article in detail, try copying the information you find relevant to your research topic in a separate word processing document. Copying and pasting from PDF to Word can be a pain because PDFs are image files not documents. To make that easier, use the HTML version of the article, convert the PDF to Word in Adobe Acrobat or another PDF reader, or use “paste special” command to paste the content into Word without formatting. If it’s an old PDF, you may have to simply type out the information you need. It can be a messy job, but having all of your facts in one place is very helpful for drafting your literature review. Of course, you will not be using other authors’ words in your own literature review, but this is a good way to start compiling your notes.

You should copy and paste any fact or argument you consider important. Some good examples include definitions of concepts, statistics about the size of the social problem, and empirical evidence about the key variables in the research question, among countless others. It’s a good idea to consult with your professor and the syllabus for the course about what they are looking for when they read your literature review. Facts for your literature review are principally found in the introduction, results, and discussion section of an empirical article or at any point in a non-empirical article. Copy and paste into your notes anything you may want to use in your literature review.

Importantly, you must make sure you note the original source of that information. Nothing is worse than searching your articles for hours only to realize you forgot to note where your facts came from. If you found a statistic that the author used in the introduction, it almost certainly came from another source that the author cited in a footnote or internal citation. You will want to check the original source to make sure the author represented the information correctly. Moreover, you may want to read the original study to learn more about your topic and discover other sources relevant to your inquiry.

Assuming you have pulled all of the facts out of multiple articles, it’s time to start thinking about how these pieces of information relate to each other. Start grouping each fact into categories and subcategories as shown in Figure 3.3. For example, a statistic stating that homeless single adults are more likely to be male may fit into a category of gender and homelessness. For each topic or subtopic you identified during your critical analysis of each paper, determine what those papers have in common. Likewise, determine which ones in the group differ. If there are contradictory findings, you may be able to identify methodological or theoretical differences that could account for the contradiction. For example, one study may sample only high-income earners or those in a rural area. Determine what general conclusions you can report about the topic or subtopic, based on all of the information you’ve found.

Create a separate document containing a topical outline that combines your facts from each source and organizes them by topic or category. As you include more facts and more sources into your topical outline, you will begin to see how each fact fits into a category and how categories are related to each other. Your category names may change over time, as may their definitions. This is a natural reflection of the learning you are doing.

A complete topical outline is a long list of facts, arranged by category about your topic. As you step back from the outline, you should understand the topic areas where you have enough information to make strong conclusions about what the literature says. You should also assess in what areas you need to do more research before you can write a robust literature review. The topical outline should serve as a transitional document between the notes you write on each source and the literature review you submit to your professor. It is important to note that they contain plagiarized information that is copied and pasted directly from the primary sources. That’s okay because these are just notes and are not meant to be turned in as your own ideas. For your final literature review, you must paraphrase these sources to avoid plagiarism. More importantly, you should keep your voice and ideas front-and-center in what you write as this is your analysis of the literature. Make strong claims and support them thoroughly using facts you found in the literature. We will pick up the task of writing your literature review in section 3.3.

5.5 Synthesis and Literature Reviews

Literature reviews : synthesis and research.

Why do we seek to understand the ways that authors or sources “converse” with one another? So that we can synthesize various perspectives on a topic to more deeply understand it.

In academic writing, this understanding of the “conversation” may become the content of an explanatory synthesis paper – a paper in which you, the writer, point out various various themes or key points from a conversation on a particular topic. Notice that the example of synthesis in “What Synthesis Is” acknowledges that guns and gun control inspire passionate responses in Americans, that more than one kind of weapon is involved in gun violence, that guns in America are both legally and illegally owned, and that there are many constituencies whose experience with guns needs to considered if sound gun-control policy is to be achieved. The writer of this synthesis isn’t “pretending” to be objective (“Although gun violence is a problem in American today, people who want to increase gun control clearly don’t understand the Second Amendment”); nor is the writer arguing a point or attempting to persuade the audience to accept one perspective. The writer is making a claim about gun control that demonstrates his or her deepest understanding of the issue.

Another assignment that you may complete that also applies your synthesis skills is a l iterature review . Literature reviews are often found in the beginning of scholarly journal articles to contextualize the author’s own research. Sometimes, literature reviews are done for their own sake; some scholarly articles are just Literature reviews.

Literature reviews (sometimes shortened to “lit reviews”) synthesize previous research that has been done on a particular topic, summarizing important works in the history of research on that topic. The literature review provides context for the author’s own new research. It is the basis and background out of which the author’s research grows. Context = credibility in academic writing. When writers are able to produce a literature review, they demonstrate the breadth of their knowledge about how others have already studied and discussed their topic.

Literature reviews are most often arranged by topic or theme , much like a traditional explanatory synthesis paper.
If one is looking at a topic that has a long history of research and scholarship, one may conduct a chronological literature review, one that looks at how the research topic has been studied and discussed in various time periods (i.e., what was published ten years ago, five years ago, and within the last year, for example).
Finally, in some instances, one might seek to craft a literature review that is organized by discipline or field. This type of literature review could offer information about how different academic fields have examined a particular topic (i.e., what is the current research being done by biologists on this topic? What is the current research being done by psychologists on this topic? What is the current research being done by [ insert academic discipline] on this topic?).

A Literature Review offers only a report on what others have already written about. The Literature Review does not reflect the author’s own argument or contributions to the field of research. Instead, it indicates that the author has read others’ important contributions and understands what has come before him or her. Sometimes, literature reviews are stand alone assignments or publications. Sometimes, they fit into a larger essay or article (especially in many of the scholarly articles that you will read throughout college. This column is intended to address the kinds of knotty problems and dilemmas with which many scholars grapple in studying health professions education. In this article, the authors address the question of whether one should conduct a literature review or knowledge synthesis, considering the why, when, and how, as well as its potential pitfalls. The goal is to guide supervisors and students who are considering whether to embark on a literature review in education research.

Avoid common mistakes on your manuscript.

Two junior colleagues come to you to ask your advice about carrying out a literature review on a particular topic. “Should they?” immediately pops into your mind, followed closely by, if yes, then what kind of literature review is appropriate? Our experience is that colleagues often come to suggest a literature review to “kick start” their research (in fact, some academic programs require them as part of degree requirements), without a full understanding of the work involved, the different types of literature review, and what type of literature review might be most suitable for their research question. In this Questions and Quandaries, we address the question of literature reviews in education research, considering the why, when, and how, as well as potential pitfalls.

First, what is meant by literature review? The term literature review has been used to refer to both a review of the literature and a knowledge synthesis (Maggio et al., 2018 ; Siddaway et al., 2019 ). For our purposes, we employ the term as commonly used to refer to a knowledge synthesis , which is a formal comprehensive review of the existing body of literature on a topic. It is a research approach that critically integrates and synthesizes available evidence from multiple studies to provide insight and allow the drawing of conclusions. It is an example of Boyer’s scholarship of integration (Boyer, 1990 ). In contrast, a review of the literature is a relatively casual and expedient method for attaining a general overview of the state of knowledge on a given topic to make the argument that a new study is needed. In this interpretation, a literature review serves as a key starting point for anyone conducting research by identifying gaps in the literature, informing the study question, and situating one’s study in the field.

Whether a formal knowledge synthesis should be done depends on if a review is needed and what the rationale is for the review. The first question to consider is whether a literature review already exists. If no, is there enough literature published on the topic to warrant a review? If yes, does the previous review need updating? How long has it been since the last review and has the literature expanded so much or are there important new studies that need integrating to justify an updated review? Or were there flaws in the previous review that one intends to address with a new review? Or does one intend to address a different question than the focus of the previous review?

If the knowledge synthesis is to be done, it should be driven by a research question. What is the research question? Can it be answered by a review? What is the purpose of the synthesis? There are two main purposes for knowledge synthesis– knowledge support and decision support. Knowledge support summarizes the evidence while decision support takes additional analytical steps to allow for decision-making in particular contexts (Mays et al., 2005 ).

If the purpose is to provide knowledge support, then the question is how or what will the knowledge synthesis add to the literature? Will it establish the state of knowledge in an area, identify gaps in the literature/knowledge base, and/or map opportunities for future research? Cornett et al., performed a scoping review of the literature on professional identity, focusing on how professional identity is described, why the studies where done, and what constructs of identity were used. Their findings advanced understanding of the state of knowledge by indicating that professional identity studies were driven primarily by the desire to examine the impact of political, social and healthcare reforms and advances, and that the various constructs of professional identity across the literature could be categorized into five themes (Cornett et al., 2023 ).

If, on the other hand, the purpose of the knowledge synthesis is to provide decision support, for whom will the synthesis be relevant and how will it improve practice? Will the synthesis result in tools such as guidelines or recommendations for practitioners and policymakers? An example of a knowledge synthesis for decision support is a systematic review conducted by Spencer and colleagues to examine the validity evidence for use of the Ottawa Surgical Competency Operating Room Evaluation (OSCORE) assessment tool. The authors summarized their findings with recommendations for educational practice– namely supporting the use of the OSCORE for in-the-moment entrustment decisions by frontline supervisors in surgical fields but cautioning about the limited evidence for support of its use in summative promotions decisions or non-surgical contexts (Spencer et al., 2022 ).

If a knowledge synthesis is indeed appropriate, its methodology should be informed by its research question and purpose. We do not have the space to discuss the various types of knowledge synthesis except to say that several types have been described in the literature. The five most common types in health professions education are narrative reviews, systematic reviews, umbrella reviews (meta-syntheses), scoping reviews, and realist reviews (Maggio et al., 2018 ). These represent different epistemologies, serve different review purposes, use different methods, and result in different review outcomes (Gordon, 2016 ).

Each type of review lends itself best to answering a certain type of research question. For instance, narrative reviews generally describe what is known about a topic without necessarily answering a specific empirical question (Maggio et al., 2018 ). A recent example of a narrative review focused on schoolwide wellbeing programs, describing what is known about the key characteristics and mediating factors that influence student support and identifying critical tensions around confidentiality that could make or break programs (Tan et al., 2023 ). Umbrella reviews, on the other hand, synthesize evidence from multiple reviews or meta-analyses and can illuminate agreement, inconsistencies, or evolution of evidence on a topic. For example, an umbrella review on problem-based learning highlighted the shift in research focus over time from does it work, to how does it work, to how does it work in different contexts, and pointed to directions for new research (Hung et al., 2019 ).

Practical questions for those considering a literature review include whether one has the time required and an appropriate team to conduct a high-quality knowledge synthesis. Regardless of the type of knowledge synthesis and use of quantitative or qualitative methods, all require rigorous and clear methods that allow for reproducibility. This can take time, up to 12–18 months. A high-quality knowledge synthesis also requires a team whose members have expertise not only in the content matter, but also in knowledge synthesis methodology and in literature searches (i.e. a librarian). A team with multiple reviewers with a variety of perspectives can also help manage the volume of large reviews, minimize potential biases, and strengthen the critical analysis.

Finally, a pitfall one should be careful to avoid is merely summarizing everything in the literature without critical evaluation and integration of the information. A knowledge synthesis that merely bean counts or presents a collection of unconnected information that has not been reflected upon or critically analyzed does not truly advance knowledge or decision-making. Rather, it leads us back to our original question of whether it should have been done in the first place.
