Orange County Yacht Clubs and Why They’re Great

One of the best ways to experience Orange County is by water, and the coastal cities that line the county are filled with boating enthusiasts and their favorite yacht club homes. Here are a few yacht clubs for boaters looking for a home to house their vessel or a community to join. 

Huntington Harbour Yacht Club

The HHYC was formed in October of 1965 and is a welcoming place for boating and non-boating enthusiasts alike. Since 1966 the club has been a member of the Southern California Yachting Association, attaining senior membership in 1981. The club is also a current member of the United States Sailing Association and has a sailing school that trains more than 40 young sailors each year while also maintaining a competitive sailing program that has produced a good number of nationally ranked sailors, including crewmembers on the American entry in the America’s Cup racing series. In addition, traveling members of the HHYC are welcomed to clubs all over the world.

“Evenings are for our members and their guests to enjoy casual dining and drinks in the Commodores Lounge, said HHYC Club Manager Frank DiLapo in an email from Sept. 5. “Sunday’s the Club host Breakfast by the Bay, this meal period is open to the public. It is a wonderful opportunity for those who would like to learn more about the Club and experience this special place. The Club’s event calendar is chock full of celebratory parties for members’ enjoyment, many including live dance music. Finally, we are also respected for our robust Huntington Harbour Sailing Foundation, where we teach local children self-esteem and teamwork while introducing them to sailing. We have over 50 boats in inventory, including Sabots, CFJs, Lidos, and a new fleet of Cubes and Bics; many are available for our members to check out.”

The HHYC welcomes new members all year round and is happy to provide additional information about the club upon request.

According to SCYA, the Membership costs are:

Initiation fee: $850

Dues: $900 for a family, $575 for a single, and $50 for a junior member.

Newport Harbor Yacht Club

The NHYC, established in 1916, is located on the Balboa Peninsula and is part of the SCYA. It offers a physical and social environment for its members to pursue yachting, yacht racing, and sportsmanship.

NHYC also represents the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation which has provided training and instruction to youths since 1997.

This private club welcomes reciprocal visitors who can provide a current membership card from the yacht club. The club offers different dining facilities as well as the Pirate’s Den Bar. In addition, the venue has showers and restrooms available 24 hours a day.

The club is known for several signature races between Feb. and March, including the Islands race, Newport to Cabo Race, Baldwin Cup Team Race, and the Long Point Race Week.

In addition, they offer a junior sailing program.

NHYC is currently accepting new members. However, new members must be nominated by a current member. Initiation fees and monthly dues are confidential.

Dana Point Yacht Club

The Dana Point Yacht Club was founded in 1952 and has remained a spirited part of the SoCal yachting community with events and activities that include the entire family. Members get access to wine dinners, live music, and a lineup of busy cruise and race schedules.

A DPYC is known for its annual Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta, a harbor event that brings together the yacht club community to benefit the Dana Point 5th Maritime Regiment Support Group.

The club has a junior sailing program, competitive racing opportunities from local fleets to championship regattas, cruising fleet activities with organized outings to destinations in SoCal and beyond, fishing excursions with monthly educational angler meetings, dining a bar facilities, and even has a wine club.

The DPYC welcomes visitors and offers guests slips for incoming sailors and is also a member of SCYA. In addition, it’s a great venue that holds private events such as weddings, galas, and celebrations of all types with its oceanfront ballroom.

Dana West Yacht Club

DWYC is a SCYA Senior Club that offers its members and guests various services and activities. DWYC is known for its annual three-day charity regatta, Sailing for Life, which supports the American Cancer Society.

The club offers youth sailing programs year-round, a highly active cruising program, and competitive racing and is represented in regional regattas, championships, and international races. In addition, DWYC has fishing tournaments for anglers and a calendar always full of events. DWYC hosts events such as karaoke, weekly game nights, sports viewings, dinghy poker, and parties with live music, dancing, costumes, and prizes.

RC Model Sailing In Southern California

Orange County Model Sailing Club (OCMSC) has an idyllic venue for competitive Radio Control (RC) sailboat racing or relaxed model boat sailing. The 9-acre lake is in one of the nation’s loveliest and in the best maintained parks that prides itself on accommodating RC skippers and RC sailboats. OCMSC has one of the countries most active model sailing schedules.

Race, Relax or Learn to Skipper an RC Sailboat.

Whether you are an experienced RC skipper, model boatbuilder, or simply interested in learning more about RC sailboats, OCMSC is a great place to meet, learn and participate.

In fact, if you are interested in RC Sailing, come to the lake and meet some of our skippers.

OCMSC Races 6 Sailboat Classes

Monthly points race series are held on specific weekends for these American Model Yachting Association (AMYA) sailboat classes:

DragonFlite 95

DragonForce 65

One Meters: US1Meter, IOM, ODOM

Other OCMSC activities include Southern California Yachting Association - SCYA Midwinter Regattas , informal practice and fun sailing on Wednesdays , yearly Schooner Argosy and picnic for scale model sailing craft, as well as a Christmas Light Parade of model boats.

Monthly Points Races

Here’s information you will find useful to participate in the monthly points races for the OCMSC club racing season.

Skippers’ meetings are at 11:30 am.

12 races usually finish before 3 pm.

A lunch break after race 4 and another break after race 8.

Bring your own lunch.

There is no fee to race for club members.

Guests skippers are welcome to race with the appropriate class sailboat.

Orange County charges to enter the park. Annual passes are available with discounts for seniors.

OCMSC at Mason Park is often the venue for regional and national championship regattas.

VO70 2024 National Championship Regatta

OCMSC will again host the VO70 National Championship Regatta. It will be held on Saturday- Sunday, August 24-25 at William R. Mason Regional Park, Irvine, CA. Friday, August 23 is an optional practice day.

The regatta is open to all class legal VO70 boats. It is limited to 20 skippers/boats. OCMSC will provide awards and registration.

The Regatta entry fee will be announced at a later date along with the Notice Of Race

DF65 2024 National Championship Regatta

OCMSC host the DragonForce 65 National Championship Regatta. It will be held on Saturday- Sunday, September 28-29 at William R. Mason Regional Park, Irvine, CA. Friday, August 27 is an optional practice day.

The regatta is open to all class legal DF65 boats. It is limited to 30 skippers/boats. OCMSC will provide awards and registration.

Home Club for the VO70

OCMSC is the home club to the growing VO70 fleet. If you’re interested in acquiring a VO70, or you’re not racing and have a VO70 you want to sell, contact: [email protected]

OCMSC sails on the beautiful 9-acre lake within the 339 acre Mason Regional Park. The Park offers something for every member of the family. There are ample parking lots, walking and bike paths, a wilderness hiking area, three separate toddler areas, outdoor barbeque f acilities and picnic pagodas, all in the middle of Irvine, CA, one of America’s first and most successful planned communities.

If you’re not ready to become a member, you can subscribe at no charge to receive our annual schedule and updates. We welcome guest skippers to sail with us. Bring the appropriate class sailboat for the respective series we will be racing, or participate in non-racing events.

Restaurants food and drink, restaurants food and drink | these jazz, country and yacht rock stars are coming to temecula valley wineries.

The Grammy winner, known for such hits as “Tonight I Celebrate My Love” and “Beauty and the Beast,” will kick off Thornton Winery’s Champagne Jazz Series, which annually brings top names to the area for outdoor concerts amid ripening grape vines.

While most wineries offer free live music year-round, these are ticketed events. Some such as country concerts at Wilson Creek Winery & Vineyards, sell out rapidly.

Champagne Jazz Series

Details: Concerts start at 7 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. General admission is first-come-first-served with lines starting two hours before show time. Season tickets ensure an assigned seat. Gourmet supper packages include assigned tables and dedicated servers.

Details: Concert starts at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are general admission or VIP seating with dinner and hosted bar. Attendees must be 12 years and older. Wine Club members can get discounts.

Rhythm on the Vine

Details: This year’s lineup is still being finalized, according to the resort, although a separate jazz series has been announced. Last year there were five concerts July through September with artists that included Chris Isaak.
