The IC24 Sailboat has become the most popular one-design keelboat class in the Caribbean.

The IC24 concept originated in St.Thomas where Chris Rosenberg identified the need for an affordable one-design ‘open cockpit’ keelboat.  Hurricane Marilyn had brutally taken out most of the St.Thomas YC racing fleet and keelboat racing had effectively ground to a halt.  Yacht club members were literally scratching their heads wondering where to go next.

Chris Rosenberg worked with ace St.Thomian sailor and boat builder Morgan Avery.  They decided to come up with a design to convert an old but rugged J24, that had survived the hurricane, into a comfortable five-person, user-friendly ‘inter-club’ keelboat.

This is where the contemporary boat builder shows us his skills. Morgan Avery built the mold that has been used to laminate 38 decks so far.  The mold was used to build the St.thomas fleet and then came to Tortola where Chris Spencer of BVI Painters rattled off 12 decks for the BVI fleet. It is now in Puerto Rico Rico (Sept 2007) where Fraito Lugo and his father are halfway through building their fleet of 12 boats.

The build process starts by spending an intense half hour-or-so cutting everything from about 18″ aft of the mast out of the donor J/24. Yes folks, that means the kitchen sink too.  Now, with perfect access to the interior, renovations to the bulkheads, core and the floorpan supporting the keel can take place.  Before the new deck is bonded in place the entire interior is epoxy painted.  Now the flange where the new deck is to be bonded in is carefully prepped.

The deck fills the rather large hole you have created exactly, sometimes a cargo strap or two will ensure this is the case.  It is bonded in with structural epoxy and a few bulkheads are thrown in-and-around to continue joining the new deck to the old J24.  Then the entire ensemble, including the original foredeck that has had its gel coat anti-skid ground away gets sprayed with pearl grey awlgrip and beads.  (Click image for larger view)

Why grind the foredeck? Show me a 25 year old J24 that has no soft spots up front!  Core repairs are always required in our experience.  Additionally you can’t beat a professionally applied awlgrip non-skid finish for looks and traction.  Your shorts wear out pretty quickly though!

The topsides and the rudder get awlgrip, any colour.  Now fit brand new Harken fittings everywhere and rig new halyards, sheets and control lines.  You have already spent a few days restoring the mast and boom.   They get two coats of epoxy paint, all sheaves rolling and new standing rigging.  The stanchion bases are new and custom made.

The boat looks like new. Add some new sails and there you have it, a sexy new IC24, ready for action.  We started selling them at $18,500 but the asking price has now climbed to $25,000 minus sails and a race bottom.  Each boat built pays a royalty to Chris Rosenberg who holds the patent.

There are 15 boats in St.Thomas, 14 in the BVI, 5 in P.Rico (soon to be 10) and 2 at the BEYC, Virgin Gorda.  Chris Rosenberg’s vision is to see healthy IC24 fleets dotted around the Caribbean.  The new ‘Flying Tiger’ will be stiff competition but the BVI, St.Thomas and Puerto Rico fleets are well established.

Sailing an IC24 is not unlike sailing a J24. No surprises there. The big difference is the comfort level.  The mainsheet has no track, there is nothing to bang into.  The 100% jib is easily winched in on the windward side.  The boat is rigged for a spinnaker and they are being used more and more at local regattas. It was always Chris Rosenberg’s intention to use the IC24 as an entry-level race boat.  You really don’t have to be Russell Coutts or Peter Holmberg to do well!

We have our own rules that have been adapted from the J24 rules, we have a class association, a technical committee and measurers. So get on down to the NE Caribbean and see these beauties for yourself! Vistors will always get a ride.

IC-24 is a 24 ′ 0 ″ / 7.3 m monohull sailboat designed by Johnstone and built by J Boats Tillotson Pearson (USA) starting in 2012.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Developed in Caribbean for inter club racing and series events. The IC-24 uses a J/24 hull, rudder and keel, (requires a ‘donor J/24) to which a new, modified deck has been bonded from a locally developed mold. The standard J/24 rigging is used with only a smaller jib allowed for racing. (the std. J/24 spinnaker is sometimes used for racing.) Developed by Chris Rosenberg with St.Thomian sailor and boat builder Morgan Avery. 15 boats have been built in St.Thomas, 14 in the BVI, and at least 20 elsewhere. (2012). Usually owned by clubs.

  • IC24 Sailboat Racing in the Virgin Islands

Sailboat Racing in the BVI

Travelers to the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands, and the US Virgin Islands. As well as other islands in the Caribbean, with an interest in sailing and racing will be sure to want to explore the IC24 sailboat racing.

IC24s are excellent for those who are learning to sail for the first time. Due to their maneuverability and size. This makes it just right for the vacationer who wants to explore the challenge of a new watersports adventure.

The IC24 is a modified J24 design. It can hold up to 5 sailors at a time allowing for team sailing.  According to www.swainsailing.com, the IC24 is controlled by a tiller rather than a wheel, which is especially helpful to those first learning to sail as the response time to the skipper’s adjustments is faster, allowing the beginner to understand better which corrections work and which don’t.

This user-friendly design might be one of the reasons the IC24 is so popular with both the Kids and The Sea programs (www.katsbvi.com). In addition to tourists in the British Virgin Islands. In fact, those who are looking for active vacations in the Caribbean could have much success learning to sail an IC24 in a short amount of time. They can take classes such as those offered at the Bitter End Yacht Club in Virgin Gorda .

Another Way to Sail the IC24

Another way to enjoy the IC24 is to attend one of the many races in the Caribbean. There are several IC24 regattas held every year in the British Virgin Islands. In addition, teams from all over the world race in these events.

Originally designed in St. Thomas by Chris Rosenberg and Morgan Avery after Hurricane Marilyn wiped out much of the St. Thomas Yacht Club fleet in 1995. Furthermore, the IC24 has grown in popularity among novices and experienced sailors alike.

Many experts say it is now one of the most popular keelboats around. In fact with approximately 5,200 hulls throughout the world (www.racinginparadise.com and www.swainsailing.com ).

Mocka Jumbies and Rum...

One of the main ideas behind the development of the IC24 is that it would be a vessel that’s easy to sail – both for beginners to the boat and newbies to the sport sailing. So, when the talk of flying spinnakers started, a move that introduces a layer of complexity to sailing these boats, the bar stool debate began.

The desire to fly a spinnaker aboard an IC24 in regular racing competition got its initial impetus in the BVI.

“It’s good for the sport because the whole crew can get involved. Racing then becomes a team effort,” says Michael Hirst, who often sails with his brother and former Olympic sailor, Robbie, and each of their wives. “When you’re racing just jib and main, then you really only need one or two good people aboard. With a spinnaker, you’re almost short-handed with four crewmembers. More technique is needed.”

Guide to Sail Trim Part III: Symmetric and Asymmetric Spinnaker Trim

Some dissenters to the use of spinnakers say that the usual winners will just win by more and the beginners are more apt to suffer a dismal finish because there aren’t that many good sailors to go around. However, says Hirst, “We’ve found that with just a few hours of practice, more novice sailors can get down the mechanics of sailing with a spinnaker.”

BVI sailors aren’t proposing the use of spinnakers as an all or nothing. “When it’s over 15 knots or the boats are shorthanded for crew, we don’t use spinnakers,” Hirst says.

Although the IC24s have traditionally been raced without spinnakers, the more general trend in the world of sailing is for one-design boats to indeed fly kites.

California ’s Brian Angel, who skippered the winning men’s team at the TAG-Heuer Nation’s Cup Regional Final in St. Thomas aboard an IC24 and whose team is internationally ranked on the world match racing circuit, says, “The event would have been a lot less exciting without a spinnaker. There would have been fewer opportunities for mistakes and therefore more boring.”

What is an IC24?

Bermuda ’s Paula Lewin, whose team won the women’s slot at the Nation’s Cup and whose team ranked 25 th in the world, concurs with Angel. “Match racing isn’t interesting without kites.”

St. Lucia’s Mike Green, an avid match racer and former Olympian, agrees. “Top ranked teams do need spinnakers for match racing.”

Canadian skipper, Erik Koppernaes, who has many dinghy and keelboat national championships to his credit, adds, “All match racing has to include spinnaker work. It tests the skipper’s strength and makes it a team effort. The whole team has to contribute to the boat handling. I actually find it easier sailing with a spinnaker than just a jib. It’s easier to jibe and keep the sail full with a spinnaker. The only thing is, hoisting and dousing can be a complication. So, less experienced sailors can have a problem with it. And, you do need a young guy, or at least a fit guy, on the bow.”

Koppernaes adds, “As for me personally, I do both. I own a Niagara 24 and race it without a spinnaker. Our club in Nova Scotia does a lot of events with all white sails, no spinnakers. What’s really important is that there should be opportunity to do both, sail with and sail without a spinnaker.”

St. Thomas’ Verian Aguilar shares a similar sentiment. “The use of spinnakers isn’t so much advantages and disadvantages, it’s really about what type of sailing you’re doing. If you want to interest young people or those who are seasoned sailors, then sail with spinnakers. If you want to interest novices, sail without spinnakers. Boat designs like the IC24 can easily accommodate both types of sailors.”

Fellow islander and IC24 builder, Morgan Avery agrees. “ Using spinnakers is only good if the crew understands what needs to happen . Closeness is what counts. You don’t want anyone at a huge disadvantage.”
