Lil Yachty Fat-Shamed, Hits Back With Shirtless Photos: ‘I’m Tired of Y’all’

Lil Yachty is sick and tired of people telling him that he’s overweight, and he responded by posting a couple of shirtless photos to prove otherwise.

The fat-shaming isn’t entirely new for Yachty, but it’s been pretty consistent, especially under some recent photos he posted. There was one picture in particular that showed him posing in a white T-shirt in New York City that people dissed.

“U fat,” one person wrote.

“Gettin a little chubby Boat,” wrote another.

“Yachty been eating good,” a third person commented.

There’s was also someone who said the 21-year-old wasn’t necessarily big but would benefit from some consistent gym time.

“Man if you don’t get Yo old ass back up an do some lifting u gon get chubby like a wombat,” that person wrote.

In response, the “Do Not Disturb” rapper posted a photo of himself in green sweatpants to show that he’s more svelte than chubby. “Y’all buggin who fat,” wrote Yachty.

Then he shared a pic of himself in red sweatpants and explained why he may appear overweight to some people. Yachty also expressed frustration about all the fat-shaming he’s getting.

“I’m tired of y’all trying me like I’m just some large ass n—-,” he wrote. “I like big shirts and I got a chunky face.”

But unfortunately for the rapper, it didn’t seem like his posts generated many compliments or changed a lot of minds. In fact, the photos only seemed to spark more harsh criticism, and people took the opportunity to post jokes.

“He just wide,” someone wrote.

“You not fat boo but the way your body set up you 2 cheeseburgers away,” another person weighed in.

“He shaped like Tracy Morgan ,” a third person stated.

Yachty didn’t post any more shirtless photos after the negative feedback.

This Is Exactly What Lil Yachty Eats in One Day

The rapper walks us through his daily eating habits.

preview for Everything Lil Yachty Eats in a Day

There is the food pyramid, and then there is the snack pyramid. Lil Yachty seems to solely sustain himself through the latter.

"You're making me think about all my snacks I like," the 22-year-old rapper says in our latest episode of Food Diaries. "It's so good."

From hoarding (literally) 40 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to his newfound chip obsession, Lil Yachty divulges all his daily snacking habits. And if you find yourself wondering if he eats fruits or vegetables in between his empty calories, his answer may or may not surprise you: "I never ate them, no."

Of his Thin Mints obsession, the musician says, "When I realize that Girl Scout [Cookie] season is approaching, I start ordering them, and then I be forgetting, and I order them from somewhere else. So I order, like, 15 from this girl, then my mom orders me, like, six boxes. Then my grandma got me some. Then this chick had got me some—she got me, like, fucking 20." He shrugs. "I don't know if that just added up to 40, but I have, like, 40 boxes. I'm getting tired of them."

When he isn't munching on the do-gooder treats, Lil Yachty adds variety to his diet with different kinds of chips. "I just got into chips. I didn't eat chips for a while," he says. "But chips are kind of cool. The right kind of chips."

His flavor hit list includes maple syrup, honey-hot cheese puffs, and honey barbecue.

Lil Yachty on Weight Loss and Haircut

Written by laserteam on september 13, 2023.

yachty weight loss

( Complex ) – Lil Yachty  is clearly not happy with certain comments he’s received regarding his recent transformation.

On Monday, the 26-year-old took to his Twitter account with a post showing off a slimmer physique and new haircut. Yachty has maintained his braids throughout his career, but he appears to have cut them all off.

“She like my haircut, it turn her on!!!” Yachty captioned his tweet. He shared the same photos  on Instagram  of his new look with a caption that read, “i chopped da top, fukk it.”

It seems like Lil Boat didn’t get the reaction he wanted, though, as he returned with a new tweet that called out people who had been  “bullying”  him over his new look. According to Yachty, he didn’t sacrifice to get this new look just for people to clown him.

“I did not stop drinkin lean for n***as to bully me and tell me i look like i have leukemia,” he wrote.

Several rappers have joined the anti-lean wave, such as Offset, who kicked the drug earlier this year. In an interview with  Variety , Set explained his family pushed him to stop drinking lean.

“I put down lean. I was drinking my whole career. It opened my mind up, but I never thought it helped me create,” he shared. “I feel like getting past that, cleaning up, and putting that message out.”

The 31-year-old also praised wife Cardi B for sticking by his side as he went through the process of quitting lean.

“She always got my back, right or wrong,” said the former Migos artist. “We both on the same mission to make each other better. We are a great team. We’re a powerhouse at this point—icon status. We believe in God. We believe in family. We’re going to keep winning.”

Other rappers who have quit lean include  Moneybagg Yo , Sada Baby, and 600Breezy.

How Lil Yachty Ended Up at His Excellent New Psychedelic Album Let's Start Here

By Brady Brickner-Wood

Lil Yachty attends Wicked Featuring 21 Savage at Forbes Arena at Morehouse College on October 19 2022 in Atlanta Georgia.

The evening before Lil Yachty released his fifth studio album,  Let’s Start Here,  he  gathered an IMAX theater’s worth of his fans and famous friends at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City and made something clear: He wanted to be taken seriously. Not just as a “Soundcloud rapper, not some mumble rapper, not some guy that just made one hit,” he told the crowd before pressing play on his album. “I wanted to be taken serious because music is everything to me.”

There’s a spotty history of rappers making dramatic stylistic pivots, a history Yachty now joins with  Let’s Start Here,  a funk-flecked psychedelic rock album. But unlike other notable rap-to-rock faceplants—Kid Cudi’s  Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven  comes to mind, as does Lil Wayne’s  Rebirth —the record avoids hackneyed pastiche and gratuitous playacting and cash-grabbing crossover singles; instead, Yachty sounds unbridled and free, a rapper creatively liberated from the strictures of mainstream hip-hop. Long an oddball who’s delighted in defying traditional rap ethos and expectations,  Let’s Start Here  is a maximalist and multi-genre undertaking that rewrites the narrative of Yachty’s curious career trajectory.

Admittedly, it’d be easy to write off the album as Tame Impala karaoke, a gimmicky record from a guy who heard Yves Tumor once and thought: Let’s do  that . But set aside your Yachty skepticism and probe the album’s surface a touch deeper. While the arrangements tend toward the obvious, the record remains an intricate, unraveling swell of sumptuous live instruments and reverb-drenched textures made more impressive by the fact that Yachty co-produced every song. Fielding support from an all-star cast of characters, including production work from former Chairlift member Patrick Wimberly, Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jacob Portrait, Justin Raisen, Nick Hakim, and Magdalena Bay, and vocals from Daniel Caesar, Diana Gordon,  Foushée , Justine Skye, and Teezo Touchdown, Yachty surrounds himself with a group of disparately talented collaborators. You can hear the acute attention to detail and wide-scale ambition in the spaced-out denouement on “We Saw the Sun!” or on the blistering terror of “I’ve Officially Lost Vision!!!!” or during the cool romanticism of “Say Something.” Though occasionally overindulgent,  Let’s Start Here  is a spectacular statement from hip-hop’s prevailing weirdo. It’s not shocking that Yachty took another hard left—but how exactly did he end up  here ?

In 2016, as the forefather of “bubblegum trap” ascended into mainstream consciousness, an achievement like  Let’s Start Here  would’ve seemed inconceivable. The then 18-year-old Yachty gained national attention when a pair of his songs, “One Night” and “Minnesota,” went viral. Though clearly indebted to hip-hop trailblazers Lil B, Chief Keef, and Young Thug, his work instantly stood apart from the gritted-teeth toughness of his Atlanta trap contemporaries. Yachty flaunted a childlike awe and cartoonish demeanor that communicated a swaggering, unbothered cool. His singsong flows and campy melodies contained a winking humor to them, a subversive playfulness that endeared him to a generation of very online kids who saw themselves in Yachty’s goofy, eccentric persona. He starred in Sprite  commercials alongside LeBron James, performed live shows at the  Museum of Modern Art , and modeled in Kanye West’s  Life of Pablo  listening event at Madison Square Garden. Relishing in his cultural influence, he declared to the  New York Times  that he was not a rapper but an  artist. “And I’m more than an artist,” he added. “I’m a brand.”

As Sheldon Pearce pointed out in his Pitchfork  review of Yachty’s 2016 mixtape,  Lil Boat , “There isn’t a single thing Lil Yachty’s doing that someone else isn’t doing better, and in richer details.” He wasn’t wrong. While Yachty’s songs were charming and catchy (and, sometimes, convincing), his music was often tangential to his brand. What was the point of rapping as sharply as the Migos or singing as intensely as Trippie Redd when you’d inked deals with Nautica and Target, possessed a sixth-sense for going viral, and had incoming collaborations with Katy Perry and Carly Rae Jepsen? What mattered more was his presentation: the candy-red hair and beaded braids, the spectacular smile that showed rows of rainbow-bedazzled grills, the wobbly, weak falsetto that defaulted to a chintzy nursery rhyme cadence. He didn’t need technical ability or historical reverence to become a celebrity; he was a meme brought to life, the personification of hip-hop’s growing generational divide, a sudden star who, like so many other Soundcloud acts, seemed destined to crash and burn after a fleeting moment in the sun.

One problem: the music wasn’t very good. Yachty’s debut album, 2017’s  Teenage Emotions, was a glitter-bomb of pop-rap explorations that floundered with shaky hooks and schmaltzy swings at crossover hits. Worse, his novelty began to fade, those sparkly, cheerful, and puerile bubblegum trap songs aging like day-old french fries. Even when he hued closer to hard-nosed rap on 2018’s  Lil Boat 2  and  Nuthin’ 2 Prove,  you could feel Yachty desperate to recapture the magic that once came so easily to him. But rap years are like dog years, and by 2020, Yachty no longer seemed so radically weird. He was an established rapper making mid mainstream rap. The only question now was whether we’d already seen the best of him.

If his next moves were any indication—writing the  theme song to the  Saved by the Bell  sitcom revival and announcing his involvement in an upcoming  movie based on the card game Uno—then the answer was yes. But in April 2021, Yachty dropped  Michigan Boat Boy,  a mixtape that saw him swapping conventional trap for Detroit and Flint’s fast-paced beats and plain-spoken flows. Never fully of a piece with his Atlanta colleagues, Yachty found a cohort of kindred spirits in Michigan, a troop of rappers whose humor, imagination, and debauchery matched his own. From the  looks of it, leaders in the scene like Babyface Ray, Rio Da Yung OG, and YN Jay embraced Yachty with open arms, and  Michigan Boat Boy  thrives off that communion.

Then “ Poland ” happened. When Yachty uploaded the minute-and-a-half long track to Soundcloud a few months back, he received an unlikely and much needed jolt. Building off the rage rap production he played with on the  Birthday Mix 6  EP, “Poland” finds Yachty’s warbling about carrying pharmaceutical-grade cough syrup across international borders, a conceit that captured the imagination of TikTok and beyond. Recorded as a joke and released only after a leaked version went viral, the song has since amassed over a hundred-millions streams across all platforms. With his co-production flourishes (and adlibs) splattered across Drake and 21 Savage’s  Her Loss,  fans had reason to believe that Yachty’s creative potential had finally clicked into focus.

But  Let’s Start Here  sounds nothing like “Poland”—in fact, the song doesn’t even appear on the project. Instead, amid a tapestry of scabrous guitars, searing bass, and vibrant drums, Yachty sounds right at home on this psych-rock spectacle of an album. He rarely raps, but his singing often relies on the virtues of his rapping: those greased-vowel deliveries and unrushed cadences, the autotune-sheathed vibrato. “Pretty,” for instance, is decidedly  not  a rap song—but what is it, then? It’s indebted to trap as much as it is ’90s R&B and MGMT, its drugged-out drums and warm keys able to house an indeterminate amount of ideas.

Yachty didn’t need to abandon hip-hop to find himself as an artist, but his experimental impulses helped him craft his first great album. Perhaps this is his lone dalliance in psych rock—maybe a return to trap is imminent. Or, maybe, he’ll make another 180, or venture deeper into the dystopia of corporate sponsorships. Who’s to say? For now, it’s invigorating to see Yachty shake loose the baggage of his teenage virality and emerge more fully into his adult artistic identity. His guise as a boundary-pushing rockstar isn’t a new archetype, but it’s an archetype he’s infused with his glittery idiosyncrasies. And look what he’s done: he’s once again morphed into a star the world didn’t see coming.

Everybody knows how trolls react whenever they see anything that is not pleasing to their eyes. Some people called these replies a stunt of publicity; however, they were needed, and Lil Yatchy was right in giving trollers back the taste of their medicines on Lil Yachty’s Weight Gain. Lil Yachty and J. Cole Unite on New Single and Video "The Secret Recipe"

Hopping on Yachty's latest—which is more 'Let's Start Here' than "Poland"—Cole takes a moment to point out that once he’s “on your song, your streams going up,” even if it’s “not quite the Drake effect.”

Lil Yachty ’s looking to continue a damn near flawless run with an unexpected J. Cole collaboration filled with live instrumentation and introspective bars.

The new Yachty/AMD Visuals co-directed video for “The Secret Recipe” sees the Let’s Start Here creator lock in comfortably with the 16-time Grammy-nominated Cole, who we last heard in August alongside Gucci Mane on Mike Will Made-It’s “There I Go.” In addition to the exciting deviation that was Yachty’s latest album, the 26-year-old has powered through the year with singles like “Strike (Holster)” and, just a month ago, “Tesla.”

But circling back to that word for a second, "unexpected." Talking to Complex’s Ecleen Luzmila Caraballo this week , Lil Boat—who just embarked on his 39-date Field Trip Tour—reminded fans, “I’m just an artist, and you should never expect anything because I will always do something unexpected. Just don't expect it. … You know, I hate to disappoint, but I'm here to disappoint if you start expecting shit.”

On "The Secret Recipe," Cole, 38, takes a moment to flex about the attention he brings other artists when he turns in a guest verse, rapping, “I’m on your song, your streams going up/Not quite the Drake Effect , but don’t complain bitch, take what you get and cut the label check.”

A press release fittingly proclaims that the track "embodies hip-hop’s competitive essence as both Yachty and Cole unpack their frustrations with the rap game while addressing the undeniable influence they’ve had on the culture throughout their careers."

While Cole’s been quiet on the album front since May 2021, this year he helped propel Lil Durk’s Almost Healed single “All My Life” to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s been on the chart for 19 weeks and currently sits at a strong No. 16. Durk wasted no time admitting Cole "smoked my ass on that."

See Lil Yachty and J. Cole connect on “The Secret Recipe”—which is definitely more Let's Start Here than "Poland"—above via YouTube, and catch the song on Spotify and Apple Music soon.

I just want to take some time now. And actually you mentioned all the accouterment of success and everything that comes with that. Now I just want to take a second and enjoy it.”

As for music, the “Circles” artist released his latest album Austin at the end of July. The 17-track album had no features and he later released a bonus version with one more song titled “Joy.” Check out Austin below.

The fastest way to lose weight? Diets, pills and the conversation we need to have

It’s a feeling that’s familiar to many – maybe you have a wedding or beach vacation coming up, and you want to drop a few pounds to feel your best. Sometimes, life gets in the way and you’re crunched for time, so you try and find ways to lose weight as fast as possible.

But experts agree trying to lose weight over a brief period is generally not recommended .

Crash diets , when there is a severe calorie deficit, are associated with health risks like dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. And when weight is lost on these diets it is usually in the form of muscle and water − not fat .

However, there are healthy, recommended, ways to lose weight, and with consistency, you can lose weight in a reasonable amount of time.

What is the fastest way to lose weight?

The broad answer is that you need to be in a calorie deficit – this occurs when you consume fewer calories than what your body needs to carry out its necessary functions. A calorie deficit can look different depending on a person’s weight, height and activity level. If you exercise more, you may need to consume more calories, and vice versa.

Your activity level may change your nutritional requirements as well.

Marcos Esquivel, CSCS, the owner and lead trainer at MDE Athletics in Chandler, Arizona, says there are a few tricks that have helped his clients lose the right kind of weight. If you are active, Esquivel says that eating the right amount of protein is vital for weight loss success. “Protein-wise, you want to be on the higher end. You can calculate the amount of protein you should be eating by multiplying your ideal body weight (in pounds) by 1.3 grams,” he explains.

“People equate eating protein with ‘ bulking up ,’ but … your body burns more calories just breaking protein down,” he explains.

This high-protein recommendation may not be best for people with lower activity levels. Harvard Health writes that the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is about 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight.

Weight loss and athletic performance are highly individualized. You may want to reach out to a professional dietician or athletic trainer to help you come up with a weight loss plan that fits your specific needs.

2000 calories a day: What to know about weight loss and calorie deficit.

Can you lose weight in just a few days?

With a crash diet, this may be possible, but it’s not likely to last. You may also experience unpleasant side effects or even dangerous conditions like dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

Some people have had rapid weight loss with new weight loss medications like Wegovy, Ozempic and Mounjaro. Your physician may help you determine if one of these medications is right for you and your health status.

What you need to know about calories

A calorie deficit does not automatically mean it’s healthy. It’s vital to make sure you get the nutrients needed to support your cells. You could eat 1,500 calories worth of brownies – and you may even lose weight. But you’ll likely feel hungry and lethargic. Dr. Julie Chen, an internal medicine physician with Kaiser Permanente in Gaithersburg, Maryland, says, that to safely lose weight, it's most important to make smart food choices. She recommends incorporating a variety of whole grains, vegetables, fruits and dried beans for essential nutrients and fiber.

Losing weight as fast as possible may not be the best strategy – but there are safe and effective strategies that can help you meet your goals, and it may happen faster than you think.

Drake & 21 Savage's "Her Loss" Production Credits: Lil Yachty, Boi-1da, Metro Boomin & More

Wicked Featuring 21 Savage

Lil Yachty, Metro Boomin, Boi-1da & more have credits on Drake and 21 Savage's "Her Loss."

Following the success of singles like "Jimmy Cooks" and "Knife Talk," among other records, Drake and 21 Savage came through with their new joint project, Her Loss this morning. The two rappers kept the features to a minimum with Travis Scott serving as the sole guest appearance.

However, what the two lack in collaborators is made up with the stacked roster of producers attached to the tracklist . Her Loss 's 16-song tracklist contains appearances from their frequent collaborators, such as Metro Boomin , Boi-1da , 40, and more.

Perhaps, the most surprising contributor to the project is Lil Yachty . The " Poland " rapper boasts four production credits on "BackOutsideBoyz," "Privileged Rappers," "Pussy & Millions" ft. Travis Scott," and "Jumbotron Shit Poppin."

Drake and 21 Savage kept the majority of details surrounding their new collaborative effort under wraps until two weeks ago, when they dropped the "Jimmy Cooks" music video. Unfortunately, the project was delayed by a week after OVO 40 caught COVID-19.

Prior to the release of Her Loss , Drake released his first dance project, Honestly, Nevermind . Though largely panned among his fanbase, the surprise release still had the summer on lock with singles like "Sticky," "Massive," and of course, the 21 Savage-assisted, "Jimmy Cooks."

6 Sneaky Habits That Might Be Sabotaging Your Weight Loss Goals

There's no magic solution for losing weight. Here's what you can tweak to achieve your desired results.

yachty weight loss

Losing weight can be a question of mind over matter.

Summer is just around the corner, and if you're not on track to achieve your "summer bod," you might be ready to give up on your weight loss journey. You wouldn't be the only one: the  vast majority of people who lose weight  don't maintain it for more than a year. For most people, the weight eventually comes back in a phenomenon known as " weight cycling ." No, it has nothing to do with "falling off the wagon."

Your weight doesn't determine your health , so if you're finding weight loss to be a frustrating and fruitless feat, you have our permission to give it up and focus on other aspects of your wellness instead. If you're committed to your weight loss goal, you should try taking a new approach, such as finding a more optimal time of day to exercise .

You should also consider some pitfalls that you can avoid to help improve your chances of success. Here's what not to do.

You have a short-term attitude

Everything on this list is somewhat of a hard truth, but this is often the hardest to accept (and change). If you approach weight loss with a short-term attitude, you may not make it anywhere except on the yo-yo diet train.

Without a long-term approach to weight loss, you may lose 10 or more pounds in two weeks and then suffer a rebound when you discover that regimen wasn't working for you. This is all too common when people embark on strict diets such as keto or paleo , or fad diets that promise rapid weight loss. In reality, for most people, a well-balanced diet that includes all food groups and even some treats works best in the long run.

Part of successful, sustainable weight loss -- i.e. losing the weight and keeping it off for good -- is understanding that fad diets, excessive exercise and "detoxes" don't usually work. They only last as long as your willpower lasts, and I'm willing to bet that's not more than two weeks to a couple of months.

There are no quick fixes, miracle cures or magic pills when it comes to weight loss, despite what the wellness industry might have you believe: Losing weight requires dedication to a plan that supports long-term healthy habits.

The general recommendation for weight loss is a rate of one to two pounds per week, although initial weight loss might surpass that for people who are very overweight, and then slow down to the suggested one to two pounds per week. Studies have shown this to be an effective way to lose weight without losing too much water or lean tissue -- and to avoid a rebound .

yachty weight loss

Overcoming an all-or-nothing mindset promotes long-term weight loss.

You're practicing an all-or-nothing mindset

Many people who struggle with a short-term attitude also struggle with an all-or-nothing mindset. I began my health and fitness journey with this mindset. I cut out all  processed foods : no bread , no pasta, no milk, no cheese  and no individually wrapped snacks. I basically existed on chicken, vegetables and berries .

This was great until it wasn't, and I ended up on a CVS run for all the chocolate and Goldfish I could hold in two hands. Then, because I'd "ruined" my diet, I would eat as much as I could physically handle, because, "Why not? I already ruined it."

Then I'd feel bad about the snacks I ate and return to my overly restrictive regimen the next day. This is a destructive cycle to be in, but it's something I see all the time with personal training clients. An all-or-nothing mindset can keep you in a perpetual cycle of lose-gain-lose, not to mention shame and guilt around food .

This all-or-nothing concept applies to fitness, too: If you've been doing  the most effective workouts to get in shape in the least amount of time left and right but don't feel fitter or stronger, you might be doing too much. Toning it down could -- counterintuitively -- be the answer to improving your fitness (and playing the long game).

A supportive community, IRL or online, can keep you motivated to lose weight and stay fit.

You suffer from a poor support system

Supportive friends, family members and significant others are critical to successful weight loss. If I was asked to cite the most common reason for not sticking to a healthy diet from my past personal training clients, I would say stigma.

That's right. As silly as it sounds, people really do get made fun of for eating healthy, especially in regions where food is an integral part of the culture. Growing up in southern Louisiana near New Orleans, I experienced this very often when I decided I was making changes to my diet.

At family gatherings and social outings, I'd get comments like, "That's all you're eating?" or, "You're really not going to eat any dessert?" or, laden with sarcasm, "Next time we'll have a salad potluck."

It's not fun to be ridiculed or scoffed at, especially for things you care about (like your health!), so it can be very easy to fall into a trap of eating -- and drinking -- for the sake of your social life. This is why a solid support system is key to long-term weight loss. Without it, the journey can feel lonely and intimidating.

If you currently feel you lack a support system, try having open conversations with your friends, family and partner about it. You can make it clear that they don't have to change their eating habits if they don't want to, but that your health means a lot to you and you'd appreciate it if they didn't mock or downplay your hard work.

If an IRL support system isn't working out, turn to online communities that promote both health and body positivity. I really love Flex and Flow on Instagram , Health At Every Size and the Intuitive Eating Community . These communities emphasize health without emphasizing weight, which is helpful because when you focus on health outcomes, you'll reach your happy weight with ease. Reddit also has a great forum ( /r/loseit ) where you'll find lots of real-life stories about weight loss.

Exercise is important for an overall healthy lifestyle, but it's hard to lose weight from exercise alone.

You assume exercise conquers all

If you're at all attuned to the wellness industry, you'll know this saying: " Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym ." Even if your goals don't include a shredded stomach, the adage is still relevant. You just can't out-exercise a poor diet.

Exercise should be part of your overall approach to weight loss because it's proven to aid weight loss (not to mention its long list of other health benefits ), but it's difficult to lose weight from exercise alone. Many people overestimate the number of calories they can burn from their workouts; it's typically a lot less than you think, and far less than the calories your body burns at rest during the day just maintaining your current physique.

For example, a 154-pound man will burn fewer than 450 calories during an intense, hour-long weight-lifting workout. You can easily cancel that effort out if you don't pay any attention to your diet. The exact number of calories you burn during exercise depends on many factors, including your current weight, the intensity of the activity, the length of the workout, your age and your body composition .

Plus, focusing on only exercise can lead to a destructive cycle of exercising extra to burn off calories you feel you shouldn't have eaten. Or you may end up feeling like you need to "earn" your calories through exercise. Either way, taking this approach can lead to a strained relationship with food and exercise, as well as stalled weight loss.

Some people, such as those who have spent years putting on muscle mass, can eat lots of calorie-dense food and not gain weight because muscle burns more calories at rest. Even if you can eat whatever you want and lose or maintain your weight, that doesn't mean it's healthy for you.

A diet rich in fruit, vegetables, healthy fats, lean proteins and some whole grains will serve you best in terms of sustainable weight loss and health. Combined with a consistent exercise routine , you'll experience sustained weight loss and weight maintenance once you reach your goal weight.

woman stressed out sleeping at desk

Chronic stress and sleep deprivation can hinder weight loss progress.

You lack sleep, have high stress and work too much

Losing weight will be much harder if you're chronically stressed , sleep-deprived or overworked . This scenario may sound familiar to you:

  • You wake up motivated and ready to seize the day. You have plans for a post-work interval run and your healthy, prepped dinner is waiting in the fridge for you.
  • A few hours into the day, your lack of sleep catches up with you. You reach for the afternoon coffee .
  • By the time work is over, you're way too drained to go for that run. You decide to skip it.
  • You're tired and maybe a little stressed or moody, so you nix the healthy dinner and hit a drive-through instead -- because you want comfort food.

This is OK if it happens occasionally (everyone deserves a lazy evening every once in a while), but weight loss will seem impossible if this happens all the time.

The truth is that nutrition and exercise are only two components of a healthy life that can lead to weight loss. While important, too strong of a focus on nutrition and exercise can cause you to overlook other factors that are just as important: sleep and stress management.

supplements for weight loss

Supplements don't work unless you do.

You're depending too much on supplements

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that fat burner supplement in your medicine cabinet isn't going to do the work for you. While certain supplements may help you reach your weight loss goals, you have to work to make your supplements work.

For example, incorporating a daily protein shake in the mornings can help you feel fuller throughout the day, which may help keep cravings at bay. Increased protein intake can also help you build muscle , which aids in body recomposition .

Certain weight-loss supplements do have some evidence backing them , but no supplements are proven like the method that no one wants to take: eat fewer calories than you burn .

Kelly Clarkson sets record straight on Ozempic rumors, says she started medication after 'bloodwork got so bad'

Kelly Clarkson has revealed she has slimmed down by taking a medication — but it’s not Ozempic .

Clarkson, 42, addressed speculation about her weight loss on Monday's episode of "The Kelly Clarkson Show" during an interview with guest Whoopi Goldberg. Their sitdown started with Clarkson complimenting Goldberg on how she looked.

“It’s all the weight I’ve lost. I’ve lost almost two people,” said Goldberg, who has acknowledged she’s taking the drug Mounjaro . “I am doing that wonderful shot that works for folks who need some help, and it’s been really good for me.”

Clarkson said she, too, has lost "a lot" of weight, saying, “Mine is a different one than people assume, but I ended up having to do that, too, because my bloodwork got so bad.”

“Everybody thinks it’s Ozempic. It’s not,” she added.

Ozempic, a drug that treats diabetes, is sometimes prescribed off-label for weight loss. It has skyrocketed in popularity and been credited by celebrities for helping them shed pounds .

Clarkson did not name the drug, which she described as “something that aids in helping break down the sugar — obviously my body doesn’t do it right.”

“My doctor chased me for, like, two years, and I was like, ‘No, I’m afraid of it. I already have thyroid problems,’” she said.

Clarkson revealed that at her heaviest she weighed 203 pounds and found herself unrecognizable.

She said that she taped a show for her birthday but that when she watched it back at her home in New York, “all of a sudden I paused it, and I was like ‘who is f--- is that?’” she recalled.

“You see it and you're like, ‘Well, she’s about to die of a heart attack,’" she added.

“It’s a weird thing. … I never saw that. I was never insecure about it. I was happy. People were like, 'Oh, she must not have been happy.' No, I was happy. I just did not see that,” she said.

Clarkson recalled talking to her manager, who has known her for over 15 years, “and she was like, ‘I know, I’m kind of as shocked as you.’ And I think because your people are with you the whole time, so it’s gradual. You don’t even realize.”

Clarkson has previously been open about her health journey, revealing in January that she was diagnosed as pre-diabetic . She told People Magazine the same month that she dropped weight by focusing on what she ate and being more active.

“I eat a healthy mix. I dropped weight because I’ve been listening to my doctor — a couple years I didn’t. And 90 percent of the time I’m really good at it because a protein diet is good for me anyway. I’m a Texas girl, so I like meat — sorry, vegetarians in the world!” she told the magazine, noting that “walking in the city is quite the workout.”

Everything you need to know about semaglutide weight loss drugs

The semaglutide-based medicines Ozempic and Wegovy can help people who are obese or overweight to quickly lose weight, but questions remain over how long they should be taken and what other effects they may have

By Clare Wilson

14 May 2024

Wegovy can bring about significant weight loss but may need to be taken long term

Tobias Arhelger/Shutterstock

Ozempic and Wegovy are brand names for the drug semaglutide. Many countries have approved Wegovy for weight loss in people who are obese or overweight and Ozempic for people with type 2 diabetes .

How do these drugs work?

Drugs such as semaglutide mimic the actions of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, or GLP-1. These so-called GLP-1 analogues have several effects, including slowing stomach emptying, acting on the brain to reduce appetite and boosting the release of insulin, which helps to regulate blood sugar levels.

For more than a decade, GLP-1 analogues have been used to help people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar and some users experienced modest weight loss. “These drugs augment a system that already exists within the human body, whose role it is to suppress appetite following meal ingestion,” says Simon Cork at Imperial College London.

Why are they making headlines now?

GLP-1 analogues have started to be prescribed for weight loss in people without type 2 diabetes. They have also become available in formulations that are more potent and easier to use.

Initially GLP-1 analogues were approved for use at a lower dose and needed to be given by twice-daily injections. In the latest formulations they are once-weekly injections, with Wegovy’s full dose being 2.4 milligrams for weight loss and Ozempic being used at a maximum dose of 2 milligrams for type 2 diabetes.

How widely available are they?

In 2021, Wegovy was approved for weight loss in several countries, including the US and Canada. Praise from some celebrity users brought it widespread publicity.

Manufacturing problems meant its manufacturer, Novo Nordisk , had trouble meeting global demand, so some doctors started prescribing Ozempic, which had been approved for people with type 2 diabetes in certain countries several years earlier. This led to shortages for people who required it for diabetes control.

In the UK, Wegovy was approved in 2021, but only got the nod from England’s medical guidelines body the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in March 2023 , when it said the drug should be given by weight loss clinics within the country’s national health service. Wegovy is expected to become available in the UK this year, while Ozempic has been available for type 2 diabetes since 2019.

In June 2023, the UK government announced the introduction of a two-year pilot that gives people with obesity access to new drugs , such as Wegovy, outside of a hospital setting.

How effective are they?

Very. It is a cliche but obesity doctors are talking about a paradigm shift in the field of obesity management. Previously, a loss of about 5 per cent of body weight would be considered a good result for any weight loss intervention outside of stomach surgery and is considered a benchmark in obesity drug trials.

Obesity drug achieves average weight loss of 24 kg in clinical trial

Wegovy leads to about a 15 per cent reduction in body weight over a year , when combined with exercise and eating healthily.

In fact, some people seem to feel that the GLP-1 analogues have caused them to become too gaunt, as reflected in the rise of the search terms “Ozempic face” and “Ozempic butt”. “Ozempic doesn’t do anything specific to the skin,” says Alexander Miras at Ulster University, UK. It is the weight loss that causes these apparent side effects, with similar outcomes often also occurring after weight loss surgery, he says.

Do the drugs have any side effects?

Side effects can be mild, such as nausea, constipation and diarrhoea, which tend to occur as people get used to the drug. More worrying side effects include inflammation of the pancreas , although this is relatively rare.

How about hair loss?

Hair loss has been reported by some semaglutide users. This is also sometimes seen after significant weight loss from other causes, such as stomach surgery, says Miras.

Hair loss following weight loss surgery is thought to be due to physiological stress on the body causing an increased number of hair follicles to enter their “resting” phase, which leads to the hairs falling out a few months later. It stops when the weight loss stabilises, however, the hair doesn’t always grow back, says Miras.

Do these drugs cause suicidal thoughts?

GLP-1 analogues – such as Ozempic and Wegovy – are being investigated by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) after recent reports that they may cause thoughts of suicide or self-harm. This was after Iceland’s health regulator received three such reports regarding semaglutide and another drug called liraglutide, which is an earlier GLP-1 analogue.

The EMA says it is analysing about 150 reports of possible cases of self-injury and suicidal thoughts . This doesn’t mean the medicines caused these effects, however, only that people reported these experiences after starting to take them. “More work is needed to determine if a causal link exists,” says Michael Schwartz at the University of Washington in Seattle.

A spokesperson at Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of liraglutide and the semaglutide drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, told New Scientist : “GLP-1 receptor agonists have been used to treat type 2 diabetes for more than 15 years and for treatment of obesity for eight years. The safety data collected from large clinical trial programmes and post marketing surveillance have not demonstrated a causal association between semaglutide or liraglutide and suicidal and self-harming thoughts.”

Do these drugs help with addictions?

Perhaps. There have been many anecdotal reports of people taking these medicines for diabetes or weight control who lose their urge to drink alcohol or see waning of other habits that could be described as “behavioural addictions”, such as compulsive shopping.

This is supported by research in animals that found the GLP-1 analogues lower consumption of alcohol and addictive drugs. A small trial in people has hinted at a similar effect from a GLP-1 analogue called exenatide, which reduced heavy drinking, but only in people who were obese .

The explanation could be connected with the way the drugs act on the brain to reduce food cravings, but the exact mechanism is unclear. We are only at the beginning of understanding how these treatments could support people with alcohol and drug additions, says Daniel Drucker at Sinai Health in Toronto, Canada. “The clinical trial data is not yet in to substantiate the anecdotes.”

What happens to a user’s weight long-term?

In an aforementioned study, taking semaglutide once a week led to people losing about 15 per cent of their body weight, compared with 2 per cent for those taking a placebo. Carried out in 2022, this two-year trial looked at people who were obese or overweight, but didn’t have diabetes.

In most countries, Wegovy has been approved for use for two years, but if people stop taking the drug, they generally regain the lost weight – two-thirds of it after one year, according to one trial .

But in 2024, Donna Ryan at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana and her colleagues found that taking the same dose of semaglutide once a week for four years led to reductions in weight that were maintained for the entire period.

The team compared more than 17,000 adults in 41 countries who were obese or overweight and didn’t have diabetes, but did have a form of heart disease. Among those taking semaglutide, weight loss continued to week 65 and was sustained over the trial , with the participants’ losing on average 10.2 per cent of their body weight, compared with 1.5 per cent in the placebo group.

Beyond Wegovy: Could the next wave of weight-loss drugs end obesity?

“Our long-term analysis of semaglutide establishes that clinically relevant weight loss can be sustained for up to four years in a geographically and racially diverse population of adults with overweight and obesity but not diabetes,” said Ryan in a statement.

It has been suggested that using semaglutide for weight loss needs to be a long-term approach. “The weight loss is only sustained for as long as the drug is taken because as soon as you stop the drug, all of those physiological processes that are trying to get your body weight back up kick in again,” says Cork.

The results have led to calls to extend Wegovy’s treatment to at least four years. Under the current two-year approval, there will probably be demand from people for doctors to continue prescribing the drug “off-label”. “I think there’ll be a big push to try to change those guidelines,” says Cork. Ozempic can be prescribed long-term for type 2 diabetes because the condition is usually life-long.

Do these drugs reduce the risk of heart-related events?

It has been suggested that by bringing people’s weight towards a healthier range, these medications may inadvertently reduce the risk of heart-related events, such as heart attacks and strokes.

Based on the same dataset used by Ryan and her colleagues, a team at University College London examined the relationship between a change in weight and cardiovascular outcomes. Presenting their results at the European Congress on Obesity in Venice, Italy, the researchers found that semaglutide led to a 20 per cent reduction in such events, irrespective of people’s starting weight or the amount they lost.

“Our findings show that the magnitude of this treatment effect with semaglutide is independent of the amount of weight lost, suggesting that the drug has other actions which lower cardiovascular risk beyond reducing unhealthy body fat,” said team member John Deanfield in a statement. “These alternative mechanisms may include positive impacts on blood sugar, blood pressure, or inflammation, as well as direct effects on the heart muscle and blood vessels, or a combination of one or more of these.”

The results suggest that semaglutide could reduce the risk of heart-related events among people who are just mildly overweight. However, the study wasn’t designed to measure its effect as a preventative treatment. Further research is also required among an even more racially diverse group of people.
