Explorer 62 2024

Explorer Yachts is an innovative luxury yacht builder from the new Lombardo Loy shipyard in the province of Bergamo, Italy. These yachts are designed to offer exceptional seaworthiness and comfortable cruising over extended distances.

Explorer 62 is designed by Davide Cipriani of Centrostiledesign. It is an incredibly comfortable and convenient yacht with interior that gives the idea of being aboard a much larger craft then 62 feet.

This Explorer 62 have a range of 700 nm and is designed for long journeys. The average fuel consumption is 50 l/h at a speed of 11/12 knots and this allows her to sail for a good 60 hours and cover almost 700 miles. With a fuel tank capacity of 2800 litres and with generous storage facilities, she can be taken to sea for extensive explorations.

The theme that characterises this Explorer 62 is its innovative layout and it is designed to improve life on board for its guests. It is no coincidence that this boat won the prestigious “Best Layout 2021” award assigned by World Yachts Trophies. Everything is allowed to the shipowner, who can configure and furnish the cockpit and main deck with free-standing furniture to his liking.

The key feature that strongly identifies this Explorer 62 is the choice of the forward driving position, as in an reel explorer super yacht.

This Explorer 62 is an eye catching master piece and is now for sale through our brokerage. Feel free to contact us

This Explorer 62 is conceived as a modern flat where the only constraints are the sliding doors in the saloon and the steering position. On main deck exteriors and interiors can be connected as a single room by opening French windows, deconstructing a corner and allowing free circulation of fresh air. Saloon on this Explorer 62 have 70 sqm living area and it is insulated from both hot and cold.

Sleeping quarters have very bright rooms with large side windows, carefully designed furniture and fabrics. Bathrooms have wide and high showers with sturdy, tall and spacious sinks.

For the interior decoration Explorer Yachts have prepared a solution combining calacatta marble in the cabins and noir desire marble in the bathrooms, lacquered blacks and matt whites. To ensure privacy and noise containment Explorer Yachts have used double bulkheads and doors to the highest nautical standards.

Explorer 62 have straight hull with life-saving bulb, completely watertight and insulated. It has the function of breaking any objects that get in the way of the yacht’s navigation such as logs, floating objects, containers and any ice formations. The bulb is made entirely of fibreglass, located in the lower front part of the boat, and is designed to protect the hull and the Volvo Penta IPS pods. The main steering station is in a forward position towards the bow, the windscreen is made from a single piece of glass with a 180-degree view, to maximise the helmsman’s visibility. Two additional helm stations are located on the flybridge and aft. Boat is equipped with bilge and autoclave pumps, double anchor system, two winches and two 50 kg steel anchors. With her double systems she is the only vessel under 20 metres to have a large-ship anchorage system. Gunwales from bow to stern is higher than most yachts, to ensure lateral safety as in a large ship.

The staircase to access the flybridge was moved to the port side, which is completely made of glass, to allow an optimal view of the stern from the helm station. Explorer can be equipped with a PVC crystal canopy for insulating the flybridge area if the yacht is to be delivered to customers from colder markets or from those with high temperatures and humidity levels.

Explorer 62 is also equipped with a unique stability system, through 24 V electrical operation, consisting of carbon fins and flaps which are governed by a specially designed software. This makes the boat more comfortable to be on and reduce the risk of seasickness or other discomfort.

Vanguard: Hydro Tec presents the evolution of explorers

Hydro Tec introduces Vanguard, the latest evolutionary stage of explorer yachts

Sergio-Cutolo

With Hydro Tec , he has designed and engineered many over the last 25 years, developing an unparalleled experience and marking evolutionary stages that have entered history.

A recent and sublime example of this is the newly launched Flexplorer by Cantiere delle Marche which clearly shows how a holistic vision is indispensable for combining creativity and innovation, design and naval engineering.

However, this is not enough for Sergio Cutolo who, on the 25th anniversary of the foundation of Hydro Tec , presents an innovative yet feasible concept. It is called Vanguard and represents the latest evolutionary stage of Explorer Yachts.

This 65 m explorer, was born on a displacement platform, which develops a considerable width and which distorts the vertical position of the various decks, creating a bridge “below deck” well above the full load waterline.

Vanguard-Explorer-Hydro-Tec

The engine room is also repositioned, largely, in the under-lower deck, occupying a minimum space on the lower deck, essentially intended for air intakes only.

The main deck, towards the stern, sees the tender area, covered, with bridge cranes and side doors for the launch of the tenders and the various toys on board; when these are in the water, this area is mostly usable for outdoor activities.

Vanguard-Hydro-Tec-Explorer

Further on, towards the bow, we will find on the left the galley, with pantry, and on the starboard access to the owner’s suite consisting of a large study, relaxation area, bedroom, with two terraces to starboard and to port and the bathroom/dressing area.

On the upper deck, aft of the technical area, consisting of the bridge, the office and the master’s cabin, we find the large panoramic sky lounge, with an adjoining cinema area and outdoor terrace. On this level, towards the stern, is the helideck.

From a technical point of view, propulsion is entrusted to two MTU main engines, connected, via shaft lines, to two fixed blade propellers, and, in addition, to two electric motors powered by the on-board network.

Electric motors allow speeds of up to about 10 knots in electric diesel mode.

Released Vanguard’s new renders, Hydro Tec’s twenty-fifth anniversary celebratory project, a design studio always capable of great innovative thrusts, with a particular focus on the beach club, a flexible and usable space even with the planet’s most extreme climatic conditions.

Vanguard includes all the experience in integrated design, gained in over 25 years of Hydro Tec, where creativity, architecture and engineering find maximum expression.

Indoor environments must be in direct communication with the outside; at the same time all outdoor areas must be able to convert to be able to use them even in cold climates. In short, they must be versatile, flexible, suitable for use in all weather conditions.

The regulatory requirements have been bent to the architectural needs, emphasizing one of the strengths of Hydro Tec itself, the ability to analyse every project in its entireness, without overlooking any aspect of the design spiral.

This continuity allows, for example, guests to access the Beach Club directly from their cabins, without having to cross the Main Deck or the others exterior decks.

Hydro Tec - Vanguard 65 metri

The tender area, located on the main deck, is another space adaptable to different life situations; once the tenders heve been launched, in fact, can be turned into a covered terrace, just like the heli-deck.

The wide spaces of this area allows you to embark many tenders and toys, a fundamental feature for an explorer yacht, born with the idea to cruise for long periods without touching land and in areas of the world poorly equipped for traditional yachts.

Inside Hydro Tec's 65 Metre Explorer Concept Vanguard

Hydro Tec has revealed a 65-metre displacement explorer yacht concept to mark the studio’s 26th anniversary.

The concept is named Vanguard after the fact that there has always been a British warship named Vanguard since 1580. Vanguard “fully represents the spirit of the studio” while remaining “firmly anchored to a solid technical base,” Hydro Tec said.

Studio founder Sergio Cutolo said he had concentrated 25 years’ experience of designing explorer yachts into “a single project.”

He added that the design is inspired by the medieval walled city of Mont Saint Michel “with its high walls." Despite this, Vanguard remains "open to the view and to the horizon thanks to its windows and terraces.”

Key features on board include a rejigged GA configuration, creating an “under-lower deck” dedicated to technical areas, specifically the engine room. This leaves the lower deck dedicated to guest use, allowing direct access from guest cabins to the beach club and spa.

A large heated swimming pool also sits on the lower deck alongside the crew quarters forward, which comprises cabins and a “canteen”.

The main deck features a large saloon with adjoining dining room leading onto the galley pantry and owner’s suite with two private terraces to port and starboard.

The tender garage meanwhile sits aft of the main deck alongside deployment cranes and side doors facilitating the safe launch and retrieval of the tenders and toys.

The bridge, office and captain’s cabin are located on the upper deck while a panoramic sky lounge with cinema and outdoor terrace sit aft, alongside a helipad.

Vanguard features a hybrid propulsion package consisting of two MTU engines and two electric motors, providing speeds of up to 10 knots in diesel electric mode.

See the World with Hydro Tec’s Stunning Vanguard Explorer Concept

By Victor Baker

Published on December 12, 2020

Hydro Tec Vanguard 2

Founded in 1995, Hydro Tec has been revealing unique and cool superyacht projects for 25 years now, so there are plenty of reasons to celebrate this year. As such, the Italian naval architecture brand keeps true to its dedication and revealed a superb 65-meter explorer yacht concept.

Called Vanguard, a name that was attached to British battleships for more than 440 years, this yacht concept aims to remind you of those iconic vessel. Designed to embody the essence and spirit of the Italian studio in regards to innovation and exclusivity, this sleek yacht looks mighty fine.

Hydro Tec Vanguard 1

According to studio founder Sergio Cutolo, this spectacular explorer yacht was inspired by “a castle in the middle of the sea”, which some of you might know as Mont Saint Michel.

An odd choice if you ask us, but we do know that Vanguard is based on a displacement platform, which distorts the vertical position of the various decks. As such, mobile terraces in correspondence with the guest cabins and large spaces responsible for technical equipment and toys are something that future owners may benefit from.

Hydro Tec Vanguard 3

A choice in configuration enables the yacht to feature an “under-lower deck”, a sophisticated way of saying engine room; but this choice changes the entire layout of the vessel, allowing for more amenities and comfort to be experienced onboard.

As such, the lower deck becomes fully usable while the central part of the beach area is occupied by a large heated swimming pool, with a foldable side that quickly transforms into an extension of the beach area itself if the weather conditions allow it.

Hydro Tec Vanguard 5

On the other hand, the forward area of the lower deck has been chosen for the crew cabins and their canteen.

Meanwhile, the main deck features a large saloon with an adjoining dining room. You’ll also find here the owner’s suite, featuring a large study and relaxation area, an incredibly spacious bedroom, as well as two terraces – bathroom/dressing areas are included as well.

Hydro Tec Vanguard 8

The upper deck is where passengers will find the generous panoramic sky lounge, with an adjoining cinema area and a lovely outdoor terrace. If you’d like to arrive in style the helideck is there to help, allowing passengers to make a grand entry or leave towards exotic destinations whenever they feel like it.

Hydro Tec’s Vanguard Explorer Concept would come with a hybrid propulsion package, including two MTU engines and two electric motors, that allows this yacht to achieve speeds of up to about 10 knots in electric diesel mode. Would you like to explore the world with this yacht?

Vanguard: to “explorer” the world onboard a SPA

Minimal White Logo

Vanguard is a 65-meter-long Explorer Superyacht equipped with hybrid propulsion and a SPA that can be used even in the most extreme weather conditions on the planet.

Released Vanguard’s new renders, Hydro Tec’s twenty-fifth anniversary celebratory project, a design studio always capable of great innovative thrusts, with a particular focus on the beach club, a flexible and usable space even with the planet’s most extreme climatic conditions.

Indoor environments must be in direct communication with the outside; at the same time all outdoor areas must be able to convert to be able to use them even in cold climates. In short, they must be versatile, flexible, suitable for use in all weather conditions.

Vanguard is precisely the result of this modern conception, offering an articulated and flexible lay-out, with an ideal circulation on it, that avoids fixed paths and duplicated areas.

The regulatory requirements have been bent to the architectural needs, emphasizing one of the strengths of Hydro Tec itself, the ability to analyse every project in its entireness, without overlooking any aspect of the design spiral.

“Nowadays, the interiors and exteriors of a megayacht are lived seamlessly, a homogeneous path in which you can not ignore a perfect integration between the various spaces.” says  Sergio Cutolo

Vanguard: the explorer seen from a SPA

This continuity allows, for example, guests to access the Beach Club directly from their cabins, without having to cross the Main Deck or the others exterior decks.

But this explorer superyacht is also a floating spa . In fact, the pool area can be enclosed with sliding glass windows, which gives the possibility to use the pool in both very hot and very cold climates.

The tender area, located on the main deck, is another space adaptable to different life situations; once the tenders heve been launched, in fact, can be turned into a covered terrace, just like the heli-deck .

The wide spaces of this area allows you to embark many tenders and toys, a fundamental feature for an explorer yacht, born with the idea to cruise for long periods without touching land and in areas of the world poorly equipped for traditional yachts.

Vanguard undoubtedly represents a step forward in the concept of superyacht .

Aluminum Strength

With the up front caveat that there is no one “best” material to use when building a boat as they all have their own lists of pros and cons, when you set about building a boat to take on the extremes that Mother Nature can throw at you when crossing the world’s oceans “short handed” with just 1 or 2 people and doing so with the highest safety and comfort, the choice becomes more clear. As with many other choices when designing and building such a boat, this is an extremely personal decision and what counts the most is that YOU have the highest possible confidence in your choice and can set to sea knowing that your boat will be able to endure much more than you.

The reasons of choosing aluminium as your hull material

xpm-series-content-img-1

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency has become one of the most important subject for boat owners and sailors not only because of high expenses but also they pay attention to the environment and nature. Naval Yachts sees these facts and concentrates in new Technologies and engineered studies together with the technical universities and institutions to find and offer solutions.

We use aluminum. A superior material. Light and 100% recyclable. ( Aluminium Yachts )

We have hybrid solutions in powertrain. We have serial hybrid boats launched already with the latest technology.

We use light materials in interior. We make our calculations to reach a light but stable boat in the end.

We design and use the most efficient hull forms in order to get best results with minimum water resistance under the waterline.

Earth is a great planet to discover and experience on a boat. As long as you can. As the sailors would like to discover and see more places, they need enough speed, consume less and bigger fuel tanks.

Our boats can give the chance the sailors to cruise faster and longer without refueling.

Long Range Yachts : Exploring the Naval Yachts XPM Series

xpm-series-content-img-1

Mission Safety / Safety First

At Naval Yachts, safety is our paramount mission. We prioritize safety first in every aspect of our aluminum yacht production. From design to construction, our unwavering commitment to ensuring the security and well-being of our passengers and crew is at the core of our values

Full Customisation

Naval Yachts is specialised in custom boat building. All our boats are unique and can not be repated because every owner has his own dream on board.

Thanks to our design and engineering team, we can make modifications easily and our experienced production and assemly team can produce and apply these modifications.

xpm-series-content-img-1

With the up front caveat that there is no one “best” material to use when building a boat as they all have their own lists of pros and cons, when you set about building a boat to take on the extremes that Mother Nature can throw at you when crossing the world’s oceans “short handed” with just 1 or 2 people and doing so with the highest safety and comfort, the choice becomes more clear.  As with many other choices when designing and building such a boat, this is an extremely personal decision and what counts the most is that YOU have the highest possible confidence in your choice and can set to sea knowing that your boat will be able to endure much more than you.

The reasons of choosing aluminium as your hull material;

  • Extremely easy to work with using regularly available tools such as carbide tipped saws and router bits and to fabricate with readily available welding and bending equipment.  CNC cutting with plasma, waterjet or laser works particularly well with aluminium which allows custom designs to be as affordably built as production boats with the dramatic savings in labour time and costs.
  • On a like to like boat comparison aluminum boat hulls weigh about 30% less than steel and less weight means a more easily powered hull which pays us back in reduced fuel costs for the life of the boat.
  • Our previous all steel sailboat taught us the valuable lesson that robustly built metal boats do not flex or move under the stress and strain of the seas and everything and everyone onboard benefits from boat parts that stay water tight because they don’t move and from the quiet of cabinetry that isn’t being flexed.
  • eXtremely low exterior maintenance time and costs when left unpainted down to the waterline as we will do.  Left unpainted, bare aluminium quickly forms a hard outer layer of aluminium oxide which prevents any corrosion which will be a major cost savings throughout the life of the boat.
  • Highest strength to weight ratio of any boat building material other than composites.
  • Future modifications or repairs of damaged parts of the hull can be easily done with either onboard equipment if you know how to weld or by pretty much any welders you will find in any country.
  • While steel may have higher puncture resistance in some situations, aluminium is the most pliable and ductile of any other boat material meaning that when (never if) we hit something the aluminium will bend but not break or crack.  By using gradually thicker aluminium hull plating from the 6mm we have on our decks to ultimately 16mm below the waterline and 25mm thick at the keel our hull will most likely see us through pretty much any scenario.
  • Relatively easy to control corrosion or rot compared to steel, wood, fiberglass or composites.
  • Aluminium is very “transparent” in terms of letting  you see any damage that does exist as there is nothing which hides below the surface of unpainted aluminium.
  • It varies somewhat between different world markets but aluminium boats tend to have a higher resale value than other materials because of all the advantages above.

Fuel Efficiency

We use aluminum. A superior material. Light and 100% recyclable.

Every Ship in Skull and Bones and How to Find It

  • Author: Robbie Landis

Skull and Bones Ships, How to Unlock All Class of Ships, Where To Build New Boats

  • In Skull and Bones, there are 10 different types of ships that players can unlock throughout the world.
  • Each ship type falls into one of three categories; extra small, small, and medium.
  • Players will need to find blueprints of the different ship types if they want to build them in Skull and Bones.

Ubisoft’s Skull and Crossbones pirate-simulator has finally been released after 6 years in development and players are scrambling to find and unlock all of its secrets. One of the most important aspects is a reliable ship to customize, sail, and plunder with. Players will find that there are three types of classifications of ships in Skull and Bone, with a total of 10 that players can build themselves. Here’s a full breakdown of where to find blueprints, how to get blueprints, and what an aspiring pirate will need to build their dream ship.

Skull and Bones Ship Types

There are 10 types of ships that players can find in Skull and Bones . One of those falls under the extra small classification, five of them are of the small type and the last four are considered medium. Each comes with a special perk to further allow players some customization in their style of ship.

Skull and Bones Ships

Where to find and how to obtain all of the ship blueprints in Skull and Bones.

Two ships battle on the high seas of Skull and Bones.

Skull and Bones/Ubisoft

The Dhow is the only extra small ship in  Skull and Bones  and comes with the Hunter perk which preserves wildlife materials while hunting. Players can obtain the Dhow by surviving the Shipwreck in the Atolls.

Rammer, The Bedar

A Bedar ship in Ubisoft's Skull and Bones game.

Skull and Bones/Bedar

The Bedar is a small ship in  Skull and Bones  and has the Lasncer perk. Lancer increases the damage from ramming by 25%, reduces the slowing effects of torn sails by 50%, and applies the flooded effect to an enemy ship upon ramming.

Players can obtain the blueprints for the Bedar one of two ways. The first is visiting the Shipwright in Sainte Anne in the Red Isles Region and buying it for 660 Silver. It can also be earned for free in Sainte Anne by completing the quest A Seaworthy Ship.

Defender, The Hulk

Players can purchase the blueprints for the Hulk by reaching Rover rank in Infamy in Skull and Bones. Once a player has the appropriate rank the Hulk blueprint can be bought for 1,980 silver from the vendor in the Sacred Tree Outpot in the Red Isles Region.

Sentinel, The Cutter

A Cutter ship in Ubisoft's Skull and Bones game.

This small ship is one of the first ones most players will have a chance to captain. The Cutter comes with the Unburden Perk which restores severe damage by 1% and hull health by 0.5% per second. It also restores the hull health of all friendly ships in a 100m radius of a repaired target by 1% and restores 60% more of hull health on a friendly ship while using a repair weapon.

Blueprints for the Cutter can be purchased from Lanitra in Angaya Coast found in the Red Isles for 1,980 Silver if the player has achieved the rank of Rover in their Infamy. It can also be earned for free by completing the quest Dressed to Kill from the blacksmith in Sainte Anne.

Firebrand, the Barge

A Barge ship in Ubisoft's Skull and Bones game.

The Barge is another ship in the small size classification and comes with the Wildfire Perk. Wildfire allows you to apply the Ablaze effect to all enemy ships within a radius of 125m if you apply it to one ship. It also increases your weapon damage by 10% and burning damage increases Ablaze charge speed by 50%.

To build the Barge players will need an Infamy rank in Skull and Bones of Buccaneer and 4,950 silver. It can be purchased from the vendor in Kaa Mangrove Outpost in the Coast of Africa Region.

Blaster, The Sloop

A Sloop ship in Ubisoft's Skull and Bones game.

The final ship in the small category of Skull and Bones, it comes with the Outburst Perk. Outburst has the following properties; explosive hits have a 50% chance of triggering an explosion, which deals 1500 damage within a blast radius of 150m. It will also increase damage to structures by 20% and explosive damage by 15%.

To build the Sloop players will need to obtain the blueprints and to do so they will need an Infamy rank of Buccaneer. The blueprint can then be purchased from the vendor in the Sunken Goldmine for 4,950 silver. Or it can be earned by completing the quest The Devil's Gambit for John Scurlock.

Bombardier, the Padewakang

A Padewakang in Ubisoft's Skull and Bones game.

Skull and Bones/Ubisoft.

The first of the four medium-sized ships, the Padewakang has the Detonate Perk. Detonate increases damage to structures by 20% and weapon range by 15%. Its explosive hits have a 70% chance of triggering an explosion, which deals 1,000 damage within a 125m blast radius. That chance raises to 100% if the target ship is ablaze or on fire.

Players who are ranked as Brigand in Infamy can purchase the blueprints for this ship for 5,280 silver from the shipwright on Telok Penjarah.

Vanguard, The Snow

A Snow ship in Ubisoft's Skull and Bones game.

Skull and Bones\Ubisoft

Known as the Vanguard, the Snow-type ship is another medium-sized vessel with the Tenacity Perk. Tenacity allows the ship to recover brace strength by 4% per second while bracing and increases brace strength by 50% and brace strength recovery by 150%.

The requirements for purchasing the Snow blueprints is an Infamy rank of Corsair and 10,560 silver at the vendor in Khmoy Estate.

Hullbreaker, the Brigantine

A Brigantine ship in Ubisoft's Skull and Bones game.

The Brigantine is a medium-sized ship in Skull and Bones that has the Bullhorn Perk. Bullhorn increases damage from ramming by 45%, reduces the duration of the torn sails effect by 80%, and applies flooded to an enemy ship upon ramming.

Players who earn the Infamy of a Cutthroat unlock the ability to buy the blueprints but will need to pay 15,840 silver to the Corrupt DMC Officer located in the Ruined Lighthouse in the East Indies.

Pyromaniac, the Sambuk

A lone ship sales the waters in Skull and Bones.

The final player-obtained ship is the Sambuk, a medium-sized vessel in Skull and Bones. This ship comes with the Scorched Perk which deals 5,000 burning damage when it applies the Albaze effect to an enemy ship. Ablaze will be applied to enemies in a radius of 150m and it also increases the damage to ships that are already ablaze by 30%.

Commissioning Our Explorer Yacht Control System

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

Today, we're diving deep into a crucial phase of our latest project: commissioning our explorer yacht's systems. It's a meticulous process, filled with highs, lows, and plenty of steady progress in between. From testing the communications and marine ethernet to fine-tuning the navigation gear, every moment is a step closer to realizing our dream of a high-latitude sailing vessel.

So, whether you're browsing ocean yachts for sale or just fascinated by the world of maritime exploration, grab your sailor's cap, and let's dive right in!

Everyone who ever built a yacht will experience many highs and lows along the way. Those are the memorable instances, but between them lies the humdrum of steady progress. That is where we found ourselves this week, so I'll recap.

Communications and marine ethernet

Vanguard has a commercial-grade monitoring and control system from Praxis automation. Control is limited to engines, steering, and lighting, though most other things are monitored in some fashion.

Praxis Automation

The backbone of this system is a dedicated and redundant Ethernet, the big brother of a more familiar NEMA 2000 CAN. Ethernet runs between a number of discrete Input/Output gateway and/or ruggedized PLC's to operate various machinery. One of our first actions after launching was to test the integrity of the data communications system, and with luck, Praxis engineers were already in Antalya at the Damen Shipyard. Our first-off installation was about 90% correct, with a few missing connections and one physically broken. An easy one-day fix all around. We also powered up the 24VDC and 240VAC systems to confirm control and navigation gear power. A first cation here was a sniff test, overheating plastic insulation is quite distinct! Once we are fully powered up all connections can be checked with a thermal camera, for now, a nose is good enough.

Furuno Nav gear

We have contracted a single company (OMS) based in the shipyard to supply and install all Furuno navigation equipment with the exclusion of our large X Band radar arrays supplied by Praxis. It is often cheaper to split a purchase like this into parts sourced by price from many suppliers.

Furuno Navigation Equipment

Having watched OMS spend three days connecting and commissioning everything, I'm glad we took the route we did. We now have functioning AIS(A), GPS, Sat Com, Fluxgate, Navtex, Sonar, Weather Station, Sat C, Irridium, VHF Radio's, Starlink, Pepwave ......

Grab handles

Appreciating a physical feature from a simple two-dimensional drawing is often difficult. With that in mind, we fabricated six small grab rails before launch. Once on the vessel with a moderate roll, finding the locations where we needed additional security and preventing the crew from gaining momentum between handholds was easy. The principal being that the lifelines should not act as the first line of defense for a stumbling crewmember. Five rails were secured in such strategic areas, leaving one spare.

Fuel system

Fuel is a subject that brings some considerable risks for the more remote locations. Specifically bunkering contaminated fuel will play havoc with any filter system.

Cummins Fleetguard Filter

To encourage good fuel husbandry we decided that all fuel being transferred would also be polished to the particulate specification as inlet to the John Deere engines. Filtration efficiency is one measure but there is also the need to retain capacity as they block.

The answer here was to select Cummins Fleetguard duplex filtration system as this has a considerably higher capacity (150g/h) than the more typical and equally efficient Racor filters used in similar installations. It's not a low cost option but it does make life more simple going forward.

Any reader wanting a great and practical explanation of fuel filters I'd recommend to Tony Athens of Seaboard Marine HERE .

Lastly, we move on to stability. Vanguard had no fuel or ballast in her hull when launched. The roll period was about 9 seconds, with quite a severe list at the extremities. Her design has water ballast compensation as we consume fuel on passage. Our first action was to fill 4.2T of water in the FWD water tanks. Once these tanks were pressed full, the roll period reduced to about 7 seconds, though we still have some way to go. From Gerr's book on stability (our Bible in this instance), our target is 1-1.1 times the beam, so 5-5.5 seconds. I'd like to understand some subtleties within this better, but that's the simple version. So now the task is to fully understand her "lightship" stability before proceeding further. A minimum 20% fuel reserve would put an additional 2t of fuel in the center tank, so there is plenty of scope to further bring that 7 seconds down. Looking at the draft, we also have the capacity for some permanent ballast up forward, making those FWD water tanks more useful than just for ballast, as we will not need to keep them full.

Onwards and upwards as the saying goes.

I recently had occasion to bump in to shipmate from some 40 years past. Our families shared a common heritage in part as they had involvement with the same ships, two generations ago.
