Dubbed by many as the ideal post-grad boat, the Vanguard 15 has enjoyed continued success as a double-handed, one-design racing platform at both the club, national and international levels. The new standard for international team racing, the V15 is light, fast and easy to transport and sail. Combined with a reasonable price tag ($7,500 new, $2,000-$5,000 used), the boat’s popularity has skyrocketed in recent years.

Designed over 15 years ago by naval architect Bob Ames, the V15 incorporates a light, fast hull shape for racers while remaining stable and comfortable for day sailing. The revolutionary hull design allows the boat to plane in moderate breeze. Built by Laser Performance, the V15 is constructed of a lightweight, yet durable fiberglass and features molded gunwales that fit the curve of the sailor’s legs.

The V15 also sports a three-foot daggerboard which allows the cockpit to remain open and uncluttered. The simple rig has minimal control lines and no spinnaker making it an easy boat for beginners, yet still providing a thrill for experienced racers. The Vanguard 15 boasts one of the strongest class associations of any one-design fleet, running hundreds of events each year. What we have here is a beautiful Vanguard 15 sailboat with all bells and whistles. The boat is a excellent condition. The packages comes with:+ two complete sets of racing sails+ a brand-new 2014 trailer+ a Seitech dolly+ a custom V15 boat cover+ For the locals, the boat is located in East Quogue, NY and comes with a 2015 beach pass at Tiana Bay. If you're local, you have the right to leave the boat mast-up on the beach. I am the second owner (since 2013) and only used the boat 3 times. Previous owner was a college-student-racer who was very meticulous about the boat and sailed it in about 6 local races, then moved from NY to CA and i just sat in his parents' garage for a few years. I just have to sell the boat because of a back-injury, little kids and general lack time. I hope it lands with someone who will sail it often and hard!

Vanguard 15 Fleet 53 - San Francisco Bay

If you are looking for an active and competitive dinghy fleet in the San Francisco Bay Area, then the Vanguard 15 is your boat! Our fleet began in April 1998 with 8 boats racing on the Alameda Estuary. Today, we are based at Treasure Island Sailing Center (TISC) and have over 30 active boats racing year around, including a few of the original boats! Fleet 53 is one of the largest V15 fleets in the country and among the most active one-design fleets in San Francisco Bay.

This strict one-design boat is exciting, yet easy for two people to race. We welcome all skill levels, from collegiate All-Americans and Olympic campaigners, to big-boat sailors looking for tighter action, to novices that want to learn the sport of sailboat racing. The fleet hosts weekly fleet and team racing from April through September at TISC in Clipper Cove where good breeze and flat water can be found most nights. There are also weekend regattas held at various West Coast venues that make up the Championship Series .

The Thursday Night Series , sponsored by West Coast Sailing, is legendary for tight collegiate-style fleet racing. Thursday nights offer professional race officials, up to nine races per night, and a fabulous post-racing party! To race:

• Review the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions
• Register for part or all of the series with TISC. (This link is not for one-night charterers.)
• Fill in the Social Chair Form (sailors who attend regularly are expected host dinner and/or drinks at least once)
• Pay fleet dues on our dues page
• Show up at the venue on Thursday in time for a 6:30 first signal.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
