The Union League Yacht Club is an activity of the Union League of Philadelphia, whose purpose is to encourage the sport of yachting within the League, promote safety and courtesy on the water and enhance friendship among the members. With over 200 active members ranging in age from 21 to 90, the Union League Yacht Club is the largest affinity group in the Union League, and is open to all levels of boaters, including those with no boating experience, whether or not they own a boat. Members meet year round, once in the spring and in the fall on the water for annual regattas. During the uncooperative weather months the Yacht Club hosts guest speakers. In addition, members plan longer trips out of the area. Recent trips have included an expedition to the Galapagos Islands, trips to the British Virgin Islands, and Belize.

UNION LEAGUE YACHT CLUB BECOMES NSHOF FOUNDING MEMBER

From the commodore:.

"The Union League Yacht Club is very excited to be a founding member of the NSHOF. While our Yacht Club is only 30 years old, we are part of a larger historic organization, The Union League of Philadelphia, that is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. By becoming a founding member, we have ensured that the Union League of Philadelphia will always have a place in Sailing History. We are a club built on tradition, and we look forward to creating a new tradition with our support for the National Sailing Center & Hall of Fame."

Wes McMichael, Commodore

The club began to take shape with both an organizational structure and a program of events. The first Yacht Club cruise took place in the fall of 1983 at Great Oak Landing and traditions were started. After the New Year a grand party was organized and held on February 24, 1984, this was the first Commodore's Ball. The Commodore's Ball celebrates the induction of the new Commodore while paying tribute to the retiring Commodore.

Ellie Hovey, a founding member of the Yacht Club commented, "What keeps me involved is not only my interest in sailing, but the people in the club - the camaraderie, friendship & openness in sharing their boats with you." This reinforces the Yacht Club's commitment to involve members without boats. Sharon McGinley, Yacht Club member for 16 years and now a Past Commodore said, "I joined the Yacht Club to gain sailing experience. I was new at sailing and figured this would be a great way to meet people who needed crew. We now have our own boat and the entire family are sailors." Many members willingly act as crew along with the boats' owners, this is a great way to meet and socialize with your fellow League members. When asked to name the best thing about the Yacht Club the members resoundingly cried "the people."

Boating Traditions: America’s 100 Oldest Yacht Clubs

The development of yacht clubs in the 1800s is an important chapter of our boating and marina history in the U.S.—and tells us much about the country’s early yearning for nature and community.

The birth of organized boating, rowing, and sail-racing clubs in our country took place in the 1800s and many of these early yacht clubs are still in operation today.

If you’re a sailor, oarsman, or boater, you’re probably familiar with many yacht clubs around the country—but do you know which U. S. yacht clubs have the pedigree to lay claim to being the country’s oldest?

The first time I heard the phrase yacht club was during a weekend at our family camp on a lake in the Northern Tier of New York State, just outside Adirondack Park. As a boy, most of my weekends there were spent fishing, swimming, and boating, and at the neighboring marina I heard sailing stories about the St. Regis Lake Yacht Club, founded in 1897. (Not on the list here, it’s the 156th oldest yacht club in America.) I was and still am a powerboater—learning boating back then in an aluminum boat with a 7 1/2-hp outboard—but I was fascinated by the sailing stories I heard dating back to the turn of the 20th Century in New York’s Franklin County.

At Dockwa, our loose definition of a yacht club is:

  • Usually membership-owned and controlled by a board;
  • Can be exclusive, but many no longer are;
  • Can specialize in many different types of activities such as sailing, racing, cruising, and kids’ programs;
  • They do not always have paid employees and might be volunteer-based.

Many yacht clubs nationally use Dockwa as their dockage reservation-and-booking platform or for marina management. So recently we had some fun office chatter—because we all work remotely, it was actually digital direct messaging office chatter—about which of the country’s yacht clubs have been around the longest.

Without further ado, and giving a shout-out to International Burgee Registry , here is the list of the 100 oldest yacht clubs in the United States, in chronological order of their founding from one to 100, with links to those still operating.

Puget Sound Yacht Club

If you like Yacht Club cruises but are tired of being on long waiting lists, our club is just for you.  We have 10 cruises every summer one we have traditionally done for the Holidays.  Our cruises are fun and engaging with an emphasis on relaxing activities and group gatherings.

Our socials are done all year round and include wine tasting, BBQ classes, theme inspired parties, dances, entertainment and fun holiday get togethers.

Working in conjunction with our partners at America's Boating Club of Seattle, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Sea Scouts, our club is focused on safe and knowledgeable boating; holding yearly seminars on boater skills/safety.

IMG_7825.JPG

Started in 1954 on the Northern Shore of Lake Union, Puget Sound Yacht Club was started as a cruising club, with most destinations being in Puget Sound and Canada.  Today, we continue that tradition along with being known as a "Family" yacht club geared towards comradery through fun and engaging social events, boater education and outreach towards many of the area's yacht club and boating clubs/organizations.
