Suva, the Capital of Fiji, was developed in the late 1800s and retains much of the character of the colonial period. Its many attractions include shopping, restaurants, markets, museums, and nightclubs. You can enjoy a walk around the central city area, which will uncover numerous surprises. A leisurely stroll down Victoria Parade you’ll see the blending of traditional, early 20th-century South Pacific buildings juxtaposed with modern high-rise structures. Towards the end of the Parade are the Government Buildings, which open onto Albert Park, Thurston Gardens, and Suva Point, guiding you to the architecturally striking Parliament Buildings.

YASAWA & MAMANUCA ISLANDS

Yasawa islands, mamanuca islands.

The Mamanuca Group  – a volcanic archipelago of around 20 small islands nestled within a lagoon, offers an ideal haven for sun-seekers. Here, an array of water-based activities awaits (Windsurfing, snorkeling, diving, sailing). Meanwhile,  the Yasawa Group , comprising 20 volcanic islands known for their rugged terrain, pristine beaches, and azure lagoons, captivates travelers with its remote allure. Situated north of the Mamanuca Group, the Yasawa islands stretch some 90 km in a roughly linear formation, providing a tranquil escape from the bustle of urban life.

Vanua Levu – Fiji’s second-largest island and is an independent traveler’s dream. Often referred to as one of the best-kept secrets in Fiji. Easily accessible from Viti Levu, Vanua Levu still retains much of its remoteness and isolation making it a popular destination for tourists who are looking to travel off the beaten path. The Ringgold Isles is 218 hectares in size and mostly uninhabited, an area that supports globally and regionally significant populations of marine turtles, humpback whales, seabirds, and reef fish.

KADAVU ISLAND & LAU GROUP

Kadavu Archipelago – A secluded tropical island paradise, the Kadavu Group makes for an amazing getaway. With lush rainforests to hike through, incredible reefs to dive in, excellent surfing, and a whole host of water-based activities to enjoy; this island group is an idyllic retreat. Situated some 100 km south of Viti Levu in the Great Astrolabe Reef. Lau Archipelago – Spread out over 400 km, the Lau islands are often quite small and are either volcanic in nature or have been formed from pure limestone.

Royal Suva Yacht Club

The current Royal Suva Yacht Club was built in 1948 at Walu Bay. It is believed to have begun earlier (possibly the 1930s) in the heart of Suva city near the old wharf at Pier Street before the land was reclaimed.

The Suva Yacht Club was established in 1932 but believed to have been formed earlier. It was formed by a small group headed by T.M. Mcquire, later elected as the club’s first Commodore. Members of the club were initially British officials at the time but later I-taukei and Indo-Fijians were admitted to its ranks. The first official race was held in the Suva Harbour in 1932.

In 1937 the first phase of the club was built in the heart of Suva City possibly around the present post office near the wharf. The property where the club is situated previously belonged to the Suvavou villagers.  Today it is State land.

The club was moved to its present location on Walu Bay in 1948. The first gala ball was then organised to celebrate this new site. Construction of the new site was completed in August 1948.

In 1949 H.M.S. Viti was sold to the Tasman Steamship Trading Co. and the ‘coat of arms’ was presented to the Suva Yacht Club.

His Majesty King George the Sixth of Great Britain granted approval in 1950 for the club to include the word “Royal” in its name.

In 1956 the club hosted the Biennial Royal Auckland to Suva Race.

In 1964 Former Flight Lieutenant C. Don Aidney who served in WWII became Commodore until 1967.  Aidney was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

The first meeting of the RSYC Fishing Game was held in 1974. In the same year, “The Dove” film was produced by US actor Gregory Peck and featured the club.

The club celebrated its 50th Golden Jubilee in 1982.

A celebration of 60 years of safe harbour was held in 1989 and the club also hosted the Auckland-Suva-Guam-Japan race.

A sailing regatta was held in 1994 as part of the first “Fiji Games”.

In 1998 the club’s sailors participated in a regatta in New Caledonia.

In 1999 the club hosted the Coffs Harbour-Suva race and the Auckland-Suva-Guam-Japan race. RSYC Junior Sailor, Alex Phillips, also won a silver medal at the Guam South Pacific Games the same year.

In 2003 Phillips’ team, called “The Laser Sailors”, won gold in the Fiji South Pacific Games.

In 2004 Vice Patron Robin Storck, a past commodore, was appointed as official historian for the club.

In 2005 the oldest living founding member Mr Hugh Ragg passed away at 100 years old. The 50th anniversary of sailing to the islands was celebrated the same year (Auckland – Suva race) The club also hosted the first President’s Yachting Regatta in 2005.

It celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2007. Vice Patron Cecil D. Aidney (the flight lieutenant who fought in WWII) passed away the same year.

In 2017 the current Commodore Peter Watts was elected

Popular Hollywood film “Adrift” is released. It was filmed at the RSYC.

Cyndi and Rich aboard Legacy

Two At Sea

The Royal Suva Yacht Club (Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji)

November 10, 2013

Once we were secured on the mooring, we decided to take our dinghy over to the Royal Suva Yacht Club, a historic building dating back to when Fiji was a territory of England. It’s still operating today and would be our base of operations here in Suva. For this we would pay a fee and sign up for a temporary membership to the club.

To get there we had to take a somewhat long dinghy ride past a breakwater and through the marina, most boats tied up med-moor style as the facilities weren’t exactly modern. We found the dinghy dock was also on the “historic” side, but at least it was functional. Stepping off from the dinghy dock we could see a fuel dock, handy but not big enough for Legacy to get into. On the far side of the fuel dock was a very small boatyard and marine store.

(Below, photo galleries of the marina area; the yacht club and the restaurant; you can click to enlarge and scroll through them.)

On our side of the fuel dock was the yacht club, built around a well-tended lawn shaded by a lovely flame tree. On the lawn were a few scattered picnic tables and a large screen for projected movies.

The yacht club itself had a large covered outdoor seating area next to the lawn, then a few stairs led up to the indoor bar. Outside the bar was a nice walkway with tables overlooking the lawn. The rest of the building included a rec room with a pool table, a main hall for functions and meetings, a small office, and, most importantly, an attached restaurant. This was not a tropical-style building but rather an old British building, complete with British yachting memorabilia and, naturally, a photo of the queen.

The club also had a few archaic rules concerning their dress code such as wearing “sensible casuals” during the day and “smart casuals” after 6pm (does having a wet-dinghy butt qualify as smart casual?). And males were forbidden to wear hats in the bar. If you forgot to remove said hat, you had to buy a round of drinks for everyone at the bar. (I don’t think they actually enforced this as it would be mighty expensive on a busy night.)

After signing in and getting our membership cards, we had an hour to kill before the restaurant opened for dinner. What a perfect time to go sit at one of those tables overlooking the lawn and enjoy a Fiji Bitter (our then beer of choice). It was a lovely place to sit! This club is actually located on the outskirts of Suva, the busy downtown area a mile way; so the feeling here was quiet and peaceful. The surrounding mountains created clouds that tempered the sun, making the November air cooler and much more comfortable than sunnier areas of Fiji. We hadn’t even made it to the city yet, but we already liked this place a lot.

(Full disclosure: Because our first visit to the yacht club was both cloudy and late in the afternoon, I have used some photos from a sunnier day in the yacht club gallery. The beer overlooking the lawn was real time, but there was no movie playing on the screen; Rich just thought that big white screen would look better with something on it. On the few occasions they did play a movie, you can rest assured it wasn’t Sharknado.)

When the yacht club’s restaurant opened we bee-lined right in for dinner. As yacht club eateries go, this was a casual and very appealing place with a wide variety of choices on the menu. I tried the tostada I’d heard about. British though this club may be, some sneaky American managed to have an influence at some point because this was the classic American version of a tostada, a tortilla bowl filled with Lawry’s-type seasoned ground beef, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onion, etc. It was American comfort food and it was fabulous!

Of course they weren’t going to leave New Zealand out. In countertop jars, alongside the American chocolate chip cookies, were two of New Zealand’s favorite cookies: Afghans and Anzacs. Rich had acquired a strong liking for Afghans , and these were particularly good.

By now, even if we discovered we didn’t like the city of Suva, we could be happy living and eating at the yacht club. But based on some warnings we’d heard, we did decide to take some precautions while anchored in this harbor. They included locking up the boat when we left it, keeping the computer away from our open companionway overnight, and putting our outboard engine and dinghy up on deck every night. We have a place to put our outboard on the railing, and our dinghy actually serves as a cover for our forward hatch so we can leave it open when it rains. Suva is cooler than other areas of Fiji, but it’s still warm enough to warrant leaving hatches open overnight, and it sure is nice to have some cool air coming through that forward hatch even when it’s raining.–Cyndi

FIJI Shores and Marinas

Your Essential Guide to the Shores and Marinas of Fiji

Fiji Musicians Reconnect @ The Royal Suva Yacht Club

There is yet another great excuse for cruising on in to our Nations Capital and paying a visit to Fiji’s oldest Yacht Club – The Royal Suva Yacht Club ! In celebration of Fiji’s live music scene, close to 40 of our most respected and seasoned musicians will reconnect from all over the world to perform on Saturday the 22 nd June at 7pm for a night to be remembered!

This historic event showcases the crème de la crème of Fiji’s performing artists of the 60s, 70s and 80s, joining together to commemorate the country’s live music history.

Fiji Musicians Reconnect

Fiji Musicians Reconnect

Hosted by The Sydney Fijian Musicians Association , in conjunction with Pacific Coast Events and Promotions (who by the way, also bring us the Annual Uprising Festival of Music, Dance and Lights at the Uprising Beach Resort, Pacific Harbour ) the event is proudly sponsored by Corona.

The night will take the audience on a historical journey of live entertainment, where musicians will reflect and share their stories through music. The show is the first of its kind and promises to be a night to remember!

One of Fiji’s prominent guitarists from the late 60s, George Knight, is scheduled to regroup with former Dragon Swingers members Ken Janson, Tom Mawi and Joe Heritage.

Fiji Musician - George Knight

Fiji Musician – George Knight

Former Ulysses lead guitarist and vocalist Bobby Shankaran and his drummer brother Johnny are scheduled to hook up with Eni and Aneil Kumar at the show for a walk down memory lane.

The aim of the event is to expose and entertain a diverse audience, showcasing Fiji’s rich live music heritage of days gone by. Having musicians from Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Germany fly in for the occasion makes this production unique, and cements the show as a once in a lifetime event -the array in the mix of these respectable music stalwarts is second to none.

Not to worry if you are not quite ready to leave the western side of Viti Levu, as on the 28 th  June, the group will be playing once again at the New Nadi Farmers Club at 6pm.

RSYC Suva

Event coordinator Mrs Darlene Underwood told FijiMarinas.com “ We are proud have been able to bring together such an amazing group of talented musicians and are now looking forward to being in the audience to witness the electrifying performances that promise to wow the audience and draw encores from those who attend.

“ The musicians are graciously playing for charity, and have chosen to donate proceeds to St Giles Hospital in Suva which provides medical and or rehabilitation services for patients suffering from mental illness. This decision has been well received as St Giles has long been at the top of the needy list”.

Big talent AND big hearts – we like them even more!

If you are interested in purchasing tickets ($25) for the event, please contact Darlene  direct at [email protected]

Enjoyed a casual lunch with a friend. Friendly, helpful service and the meal I had was reay filling and tasty. I ordered the veggie Mexican feast enchiladas made vegan. It was busy so meals weren't fast but it was nice to just relax and enjoy... the views on a nice day. Will be back. More

This place is amazing. I recently organised a hen's party for a dear friend a few weeks ago and I cannot get enough of this place. Pauline and her team were beyond accommodating , handling all my requests with such ease. The cocktail menu was... so well done , from assorted sushi and sashimi to spicy masala fish bites with chilli sauce, the food was so tasty and satisfying ! The staff made us feel at home , and were so quick to assist us in any way. Vinaka Pauline, Filo, Pete, Wati and Mereani for everything! We shall be back. If you are looking to host a small dinner party check this place out they will not disappoint. More

Excellent. Chicken wings for starters then snapper and steak. The use of mashed sweet potato was a good choice for the fish. As always the desserts were delicious. Great Restaurant service and entertainment by the Streets Band to top it all up. Not forgetting the... ease of parking, safe and pleasant setting. Thank you The Galley. More

I've eaten at the Galley twice. On the first occasion the meat was undercooked and instead of just cooking the meat, everything including the side salad made its way back into the frying pan. On the second try, based on a good friend's recommendation, the... meat was overcooked and dry. On both occasions the service was less than desirable. The view though was quite lovely. Heard so much about the tiramisu online that I thought I'd try it for myself. Ordered a FJD120 tiramisu for an evening event, had someone travel down to The Galley to collect it and the staff couldn't be any less flippant that the order was totally forgotten. Yes they have the order, but no product and maybe you should call 'The Boss.' What a shame! More

Maybe it was the fact that we were Pacific Islanders, but our experience was spoiled by the poor service of the waiting staff. The reviews of the place were excellent which was why we chose the place. Have you ever eaten at restaurant and while... you were in the middle of the meal, the waitress comes with the bill and demands "if we could pay for the bill now" Being Pacific Islanders, we let the haughty waitress off and pulled out our money to pay for the bill. The live band was great, the atmosphere was great, the food was great but it was spoiled by the high and mighty attitude of your waiting staff. Please try and treat all your paying customers the same way as you would the palagi customers. More

Where should I start... Was always excited to visit this place by pix and that it has lovely scenery but oh boy... - had Catch of the day $35 & fisherman's $30 1. Waited for more than an hour 2. Table Lights were out..until another... table was full 3. After being tired of waiting.. I ordered water cause I was soo dehydrated.. but never came neither do they ask at 1st ! 4. The window frames look disgusting - Meal comes 1. It was like it was sitting for long 2. Order water again cz i couldnt eat with dry mouth..finally comes 3. Food not even warm. Fries cold... told them..they changed or heated i don't know 4. 1st my meal was with t.sauce after replacing fries it came with tartar n t.sauce disappeared.. Catch of the day : -Was nice... until the half bottom of fish...SOO DRY .. ate it bcz i paid $35 -Fish had a small piece of bone in the skin Fisherman's - fish & chips etc: - Fries not seasoned - crab sticks.. cheap thing - 2x small fish... which tasted awful..ddnt eat it whole - prawns... fresh water prawns... cheap I don't know what I ate... all of a sudden I started sweating crazy ..feeling dizzy n felt like puking :( Really bad experience I had !!! I don't understand what all these nice reviews mean as we did not have a good experience at all. #2 in Suva?? Wow!! We have eaten out in many restaurants in Suva and have found this to be one of the most disappointing of all.... I'm usually a quite content customer and don't really say negative things, but I just couldn't resist to inform others of our experience! I ordered a burger and my better half had a Chicken Salad, not only did we have to get the menu ourselves with quite plain waiters there but the food wasn't good at all. The burger was for lack of a better word - cheap, cold and lacking taste. The beef petty seems to be not proper minced meat and the bun was hard and cold. I make a better burger than this. I did not expect much for the price, but it was very disappointing. The chicken salad wasn't as bad as mine but extremely sweet according to the Mrs which put her off. I did also order an iced coffee to cool down which I didn't receive until I asked again about it and ended up having less than half of it - really disgusting to be honest!! Went in to pay (no check was given, had to go in again) and it was closed. I had to knock on the door so that they would open and let their own customer pay. Kind of ridiculous really - sorry, but I will definitely not go back there again. Due to all this I did not feel like tipping anyone as you would imagine. More

My family and I visited The Galley on Saturday to have our afternoon coffee. Galley has nice coffee and desserts and I especially love the chocolate mousse cake. However, as soon as we entered, the lady who was supposed to serve us was sitting down... at one of the tables folding the napkins. She just looked at me with disinterest. Ignoring her cold expression I initiated a greeting to which she only replied with a clipped and cold "hello" .  We sat down and tried to settle in since we had a baby girl with us . She came to us and very rudely asked when we are going to order by making an obvious show of frustration. We tend to ignore her unfriendly behaviour thinking she might be having a bad day (tho, that should never be an excuse)  When I started to place my order she looked very uninterested and annoyed. When I pointed towards one of the pastries and said I want the lemon cake she rolled her eyes and rudely said: "that's an orange cake"  My mum suggested that we should leave but since we had already ordered..I decided to stay. She even literally banged the cuttlaries on our table. Even spilled some hot beverage on the table and didn't care to apologise. One of the cups she gave us wasn't even properly washed. To our amazement when another guy came to place his order, her behaviour instantly changed and she gave him a warm welcoming smile. We then realised the guy was a foreigner and looked well off, thus, this explained her 'friendly' welcome to him.  We planned this visit to enjoy our Saturday arvo but the staff at the galley made us feel so unwelcome and unwanted. She spoiled our entire mood. So sad how the staff at the galley treats us locals like we are some insignificant, minor people. Even more worrisome when they "choose" to be nice and friendly to only a certain group of people. Nobody deserves to be treated like this . She spoiled our nice family outing. I felt so bad for my mum and baby niece. Never visiting this place again. More

I had heard about the Galley from a friend so when I got a chance to go check it out I did and was super excited about the food since there was a lot of talk about it, good talk mind you. However, I’m sad... to say that their chicken wings that night smelled really off 😔 I did not tell the ladies serving us (I should have) as I was quiet disappointed because what I had heard and what I’d gotten didn’t add up. Their pizza was delicious though. Maybe they were having a bad day. More

Booked The Galley to host a surprise birthday dinner for my husband, after everything was confirmed, on the day of the event I was told that they are closed for stock take and would offer us a free birthday cake for the next booking. We... were skeptical but since we heard it was a good restaurant we decided to take up the offer. This has been my worst dinning experience ever!! I would never recommend this place to anyone. My first and last visit. 1. I specifically said I do not like too much coffee in my cappuccino as it affects me and i ordered a sugar free coffee for my mother-in-law who is diabetic. I was given an extremely strong cappuccino and my mother-in-law's coffee was way too sweet. We had to return both. 2. The waitress was holding her stomach with one hand while talking orders, serving and cleaning (No she wasn't even pregnant). She took down our entree order on a serviette (Yes, she wrote the entire things with a pen on a tissue paper), she memorized the main order and yelled it out in front of the customers to the chefs. 3. Our bowl of side fries had a piece of onion peeling which was also disappointing 4. Moreover, while giving the order I specifically asked for the description of the pan fried salmon and clearly asked if this is a whole fish to which I got an answer of yes and was shown that it was the size of the serving plate. This was again a disappointment when the actual serve arrived which was a smaller piece of what we had imagined. It was embarrassing as I had ordered an additional serve of rice as the three of us were in the mood of trying out the pan fried salmon. Contrary to the menu, the pan fried salmon rice did not have fragrance, there was no pineapple salsa and it did not come on a bed of 'ota' but a bed of watercress instead. The fish was tasteless and was not glazed with honey and ginger (even a slice of lemon would have added some taste to it). 5. The fish from the fried fish and chips was very oily and not what we had expected. This was supposed to come with lemon wedges but it had only one very small piece of lemon wedge which did not have any juice content as you can see in the photo, again very saddening contrary to the menu 6. This keeps getting worse as the cushioned chair which we all sat on was wet and left an evident watermark on my dress which was pretty obvious! Maybe the chairs weren't dried out if they had been wet. We spent $105 however, this was clearly not what we had expected and has ruined our first time experience at the Galley which happens to be highly rated on TripAdvisor (We did message everything to the owner and we got an apology for the bad service) More

I  came to celebrate my belated birthday on the 28th of June with my family. We heartedly appreciate the generous offer of a birthday cake as a token of apology for the miscommunication with regards to the initial reservation that got cancelled prior to my... preplanned birthday dinner plans. However, amongst this appreciation and gratitude, I would like to strongly say that we are very disappointed with the evenings dinner session. Firstly, the waitress did not present a professional demeanour and was very causal with her conversations. Also, she did not take note of any of our orders, rather memorised them and then yelled them out whilst in the kitchen area, much to our dismay. As far as the food goes, we ordered a cup of mocha for my mother where we strictly said to not include any sugar, but this clearly had sugar upon consumption. The cappuccino for my wife was supposed to be mild in flavour, however, it was very strong and distasteful. We did get another serve of cappuccino in place of the former, but why is there a need for this when we had ordered succinctly the first time. Also, our bowl of side fries had a piece of onion peeling which was also disappointing. Moreover, while giving the order I specifically asked for a description of the pan fried salmon and clearly asked if this is a whole fish to which I got an answer of yes and was shown the serving plate. This was again a disappointment when the actual serve arrived which was a smaller piece of what we had imagined. It was embarrassing as I had ordered an additional serve of rice as the three of us were in the mood of trying out the pan fried salmon. Not the size we had expected. Contrary to the menu, the pan fried salmon rice did not have fragrance. There was no pineapple salsa included and there was no 'ota' but a bed of watercress instead. The fish was tasteless and was not glazed with honey and ginger. Moreover, the pirate chicken burger had small cartilage/bones which was a turnoff. The fish from the fried fish and chips was very oily and not what we had expected. Also, the lemon wedge with the fried fish was very small and did not have any juice content, again very saddening contrary to the menu! To add on, there were inadequate number of tissues provided to us despite the constant requests for more. This keeps getting worse as my wife unintentionally sat on a cushioned chair inside that was wet which spoiled the underside of her dress which was pretty obvious! The same had happened to me unfortunately, maybe the chairs weren't dried out if they had been wet. We spent $105 however, this was clearly not what we had expected and has ruined our first time experience at the Galley! Very disappointed! More

Not only does this place have great veiws and atmosphere; their tiramisu and cheesecakes are decadent and delightful.

I took a group of about 12 people here based on my first visit 2 years before. We were all in Fiji from Sydney and Brisbane for a wedding and the night before the wedding we gathered for a dinner with the bride-to-be. Completely, unaware... of their opening hours, we walked in about 8.45 pm. The manager Jay happily took us in and seated us under a Bure in the yacht club as the restaurant was full. The ambience and atmosphere inside the actual Galley restaurant was so warm and nice so we were eager to get a table in there to listen to the great 2 piece playing as well... Lucky for us we were moved back inside where our food was also ready!! The band (still not realising that the restaurant was actually now closed) played on at our request, while we dined. Boy, what an amazing 2 piece they were, I'm annoyed that we didn't get there names but thumbs up to them for not leaving us and playing all through our meal :).. my party of 12 were all blown away by the voices of these boys which went so well on top of the top food we were served. Even as my meal was presented with peanuts and I dissapointingly had to let the waitress know I was allergic, she happily took it back to the kitchen to be replaced without hesitation.. that's some seriously good service! I didn't get her name but she was very pretty and sweet. We had such a top night, very decent serves for food and amazing quality, above and beyond the expectations of all in my party.. most importantly the bride-to-be was extremely happy. The 2 piece band were kind enough to even sing and dedicate a very special song to her. I'm happy to report since my only other visit 2 years ago, your standards are still very high and very impressive. My only dissapointment was that they didn't have that amazing Coconut Pie that I tasted and raved about from my first visit!!.. If you get the chance, get their Coconut Pie.. it's uh--mazzzzzing!!! Big-ups to you guys at The Galley, keep doing what your doing, it's obviously working, I'll visit again soon!! More

Located at the RSYC this restaurant is a must-go-to... It's closed on Monday's, BUT the location is on the waterfront, the service is professional and the food is clean and fresh. The blackboard menu offers steaks, char-grilled tuna and combinations of salads to roti. They... serve a decent coffee, an all-day breakfast menu from $5, great toasties from $3 and excellent hamburger meals from $15. There are 4 theme nights, Tues is pub night = home-made pies served with mash potato and peas, Wed is Indo-Fijian = a culinary delight, Thurs (my fav) is = a platter of Mexican dream, Friday night is a mix of Southern Pacific Barbecue cuisine...
