What time should I arrive so I don't miss the boat?

We always begin boarding at least one-half hour before departure time, and sail very closely "on time". It is best to arrive 30 minutes before departure or sooner.

We board at 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, and 6:00 PM.   Cruises depart at 11:30 AM, 2:30 PM, and 7:00PM.

Which method of payment do you accept?

We accept Travelers Checks, Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover, and of course cash!

Do you sell merchandise or riverboat memorabilia?

There is a gift shop on board both riverboats.. you can also order on-line

Are alcoholic beverages available on the cruises?

We have bars on all three decks of the NATCHEZ. The minimum alcoholic beverage age in Louisiana is 21 years old. Alcoholic beverages include beer, a wine list, and specialty drinks.  The State of Louisiana allows the purchase and consumption of alcoholic beverages for those 21 years and older.   Identification can be required by the Server to validate the age of any guest.   The forms of identification that are acceptable (and must contain a photo and the birthdate of the holder) are: United States Military or Federal Identification Card OR United States Driver’s License (Louisiana or any of the states & territories) OR International Passport or Visa

We accept Travelers Checks, Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover, and of course cash!

There are parking lots in the French Quarter on Decatur Street and adjacent to our dock.   These lots are not property of, nor connected to, our company but offer hourly or daily parking rates.

We cruise rain or shine.

Cruises are canceled only when the Coast Guard determines there will be severe weather along the river. Seating is available indoors as well as covered areas on the deck.

We sail rain or shine. In the event of severe weather, unfavorable river conditions (including river closures), breakdowns, or any other cause beyond the control of the New Orleans Steamboat Company, the Captain may determine the vessel is unable to make the cruise as scheduled. If this occurs, we will arrange for a dockside event and you will be notified via the email you supplied when booking with us.

There are times that a cruise may be delayed, but that is usually only for a short amount of time.

Refunds will not be issued for the above conditions. All sales final.

Should it be deemed necessary, the New Orleans Steamboat Company reserves the right to substitute with a vessel in place of the other (Steamboat NATCHEZ & Riverboat CITY of NEW ORLEANS) for any reason, at any time. No refunds will be issued for vessel substitution.

Is the boat handicap accessible?

We recommend river sightseeing aboard the Steamboat NATCHEZ and the Riverboat CITY of NEW ORLEANS. Access to the top & bottom decks is by stairs only. If you need assistance with disability concerns you may contact our  Complaint Resolution Officer .

How do I get copies of the photo taken in front of the boat when we boarded our cruise?

The members of the Photo Team will be glad to help you locate your photo and place an order. You can reach them at [email protected] or 504-264-7144. For faster processing, please provide them with either the photo card number or the date and time of your cruise with us.

What is the dress code?

All of our cruises are casual attire. "Dressy Casual" is recommended for the Dinner Jazz Cruise based on the decor and service.

Is there entertainment on your cruises?

The Harbor Jazz Cruise entertainment includes a jazz pianist or jazz trio (Duke Heitger and the Steamboat Stompers) along with a professional live narration of the river sites and history. The 7:00 p.m. Dinner/Jazz Cruise features live performances by the grammy-nominated "Dukes of Dixieland".*  Music by these two bands are available on the Gift Shop page. Check out our music & menus page.

If I have a special celebration, what can the boat staff provide?

As the Natchez has a small galley (kitchen), we are unable to prepare cakes for celebrations such as birthday, anniversaries, etc.  But you can bring a cake with you to be served, we simply ask that you mention it in your reservation so staff can be of assistance.  For those celebrations, we will do a reserved table with appropriate signage if you also put those notes in your reservation. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

No.  This is a Non-Smoking Vessel, both indoors and on the outer decks.

Hours of Operation

French quarter, restaurant overview.

The Riverboat CITY of NEW ORLEANS, sister vessel to the Steamboat NATCHEZ, is about to go into the history books as the newest floating palace on Old Man River. Like New Orleans riverboats of old, the cuisine will be magnificent, the music soul-stirring, and the adventure one you will remember for a lifetime.

You’ll be able to choose from three uniquely New Orleans experiences. The Mardi Gras Jazz Brunch Cruise will feature live music and great New Orleans food with a festive Carnival theme. The Jazz Brunch Cruise & Mardi Gras World Tour Combo will give you all that plus a chance to try on Mardi Gras costumes, learn a little Carnival history and tour the workshop where they build Mardi Gras floats year-round (you’ll even get a piece of king cake!). And the Jazz Dinner Cruise will offer classic New Orleans cuisine and cocktails and music from an authentic Dixieland band. There’s nothing like seeing the French Quarter at night from the river.

Laissez les bon temps rouler on the Riverboat CITY of NEW ORLEANS!

  • Daytime/Lunch Cruises
  • Evening/Dinner Cruises
  • Public $2 Ferries

Combination Packages

  • Things to Do in New Orleans

Disclosure:  While our recommendations are always unbiased, we may receive a small share of sales through some of the links below at no cost to you. See the  full text .

If you are considering purchasing tourist concession packages, keep in mind that some of these cruises are included at no additional cost in several New Orleans tourist attraction concession passes .

The two most popular cruises are aboard the Creole Queen Paddlewheeler and Steamboat Natchez (details below), but you can hop on a ferry for just a few dollars.

Each offers a variety of cruises to choose from.

We narrowed down our favorites and compiled a list that describes each trip based on experience type, ticket price, and duration.

NATCHEZ STEAMBOAT

The Natchez Steamboat is the ninth boat with the name.

The current boat boasts modern safety mechanisms within a classic, exquisite oak exterior.

It was recently rennovated and is back to cruising down the Mississippi River on a daily basis!

Steamboat Natchez Historical Cruise

Take part in her adventure with daily two-hour jazz cruises, including a daytime cruise or an evening cruise . You can cruise with or without lunch or dinner.

Listen to the Captain and crew, some of whom have been with the ship since the 1975 maiden voyage, operate like the seamen of a time gone by.

This company has received a  4 out of 5 stars  average rating on TripAdvisor and Get Your Guide ( read the reviews ).

RIVERBOAT CITY OF NEW ORLEANS

This is the newest addition to the New Orleans Steamboat Company, and it took over for the Steamboat Natchez while that vessel was under repair.

Just like the Steamboat Natchez, this boat is also a paddlewheeler, so functionally, very little will change.

The Riverboat City of New Orleans operated all the sightseeing, lunch, brunch, and dinner Jazz cruises for the New Orleans Steamboat Company during the last few years while the Steamboat Natches was undergoing repairs.

Rest assured that even aboard this new vessel there is plenty of room across its multiple decks to accommodate plenty of guests and fill in for its sister boat.

CREOLE QUEEN PADDLEWHEELER

Built in 1983 with the esteem and allure of the late 1850s paddlewheelers, the Creole Queen features an enormous 24-foot paddlewheel and modern amenities for elegance and safety.

Browse the list of tours below to pick which experience is best for you; gather on the 1,000-passenger deck for live music, dancing, a history lesson, or maybe enjoy lunch or dinner.

This vessel's review profile is a tad lower than its competitor's but still good with an overall average rating of 4 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor and Get Your Guide ( read the reviews ).

DAYTIME CRUISES WITH OPTIONAL LUNCH

There are basically two different cruises to choose from, one from each company.

The main differences seem to be that the Creole Queen includes a stop at Chalmette Battlefield at the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.

It is also included at no extra charge with the purchase of either the New Orleans Sightseeing Pass or the Go City New Orleans Pass .

The Steamboat Natchez offers jazz music on the lunch cruise during the high season.

Steamboat Natchez Harbor Jazz Cruise

An overwhelming majority of reviews for this jazz cruise are very positive ( read the reviews ).

Some reviewers have even described their band as “magnificent,” suggesting that the music played onboard was absolutely wonderful.

Some customers feel that the experience is a bit too touristy, but they are definitely in the minority.

Most guests leave excellent feedback stating that they loved this musical trip on the Natchez. This activity is particularly popular among couples.

Evening Jazz Cruises with Optional Dinner

Below is a brief comparison of the two paddlewheel boats that cruise the Mississippi River every evening.

For a more in-depth look, including what's on the menu, read our post on NOLA dinner cruises .

Steamboat Natchez - Mississippi River Jazz Cruise (optional Dinner)

Unlike their harbor cruise, this boat trip will take you down the Mississippi River.

Ratings for this excursion are similarly excellent, but it’s worth noting that not everyone was thrilled with the food selection ( read the reviews ).

NOTE: Although this cruise was being offered on the Riverboat City of New Orleans for the last year or two, the newly rennovated Steamboat Natchez is once again the vessel you'll be riding during this outing!

What You’ll Experience

  • Ride on the Creole Queen paddle wheeler
  • Live jazz music
  • Lavish buffet-style dinner | cash bar cocktails
  • New Orleans skyline along the French Quarter

There are a few negative reviews, but they are overshadowed by positive comments (read the reviews).

  • Ride on the Creole Queen paddlewheeler.

  • $52 - Adult

CANAL STREET/ALGIERS POINT FERRY

In operation since 1827, this ferry travels across the Mississippi River along Canal Street and ends at the second oldest neighborhood of New Orleans; Algiers Point.

Unlike the paddlewheeler or steamboat, the ferry offers a cheap trip across the river from Canal Street. Just ask the locals who use this as their commute!

Once you arrive, consider taking our self-guided walking tour of Algiers Point .

This company has received a 4 out of 5 stars  rating on TripAdvisor.

There are a few negative reviews, but most of them seem to come from customers who were expecting the typical tourist experience.

Although they don’t offer the same range of services as a boat tour or cruise, it’s clear that a lot of their customers are more than pleased with the transportation they provide.

Cost (cash only):

  • Pedestrian $2 each way
  • Senior (65+) $1
  • Children (2 & under) Free
  • Sunday - Thursday | 6:15 am - 8:45 pm
  • Friday - Saturday | 6:15 am - 10:45 pm

Get more details on their website .

As we have stated above, the Go City New Orleans Pass  and the Sightseeing Pass, are all-inclusive tourist attraction passes, including one free daytime ride on the Creole Queen.

Included in the cost of the pass is free entry into 25 other popular New Orleans attractions including:

  • National World War 2 Museum
  • City Bus Tour
  • Swamp Tour Plantation House Tour
  • New Orleans School of Cooking
  • Audubon Zoo
  • Audubon Aquarium
  • Mardi Gras World Museum
  • New Orleans Museum of Art
  • + 18 other attractions and tours

Paddle and Wheel Combo by Gray Line

This combo package is a great buy, and with a total of about 4 hours, you can see the city and take a cruise full of historical information.

You save $7/adult with the combo ticket.

This combination pairs the daytime historical cruise aboard the Steamboat Natchez and the  Super City Bus Tour  (video below).

With an overall rating of 4 ½ stars on TripAdvisor, Gray Line New Orleans is very well received.

In particular, both of the services offered through this combo ticket are positively reviewed by their customers.

Much like the Steamboat Natchez, the Super City Bus Tour also enjoys mostly positive ratings.

Although there are a few negative reviews for both tours, they aren’t indicative of any significant problems. This combo deal is most popular among couples.

You’ll Experience…

  • French Quarter
  • Jackson Square
  • Cabildo and Presbytere Museum
  • Historic Cemeteries
  • Bayou St. John
  • Besthoff Sculpture Garden
  • Tulane and Loyola University

  • Adult $78
  • Child (6-12) $35.50
  • Child (5 and under) Free

NEW ORLEANS KAYAK TOURS

Want a more intimate excursion on the water? Try kayaking!

Explore the swamps of New Orleans, or paddle down the Bayou St. John neighborhood inside the city with the safety of a guide at a beginner-level pace.

Ratings for this kayak tour company are very impressive. New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tours has received an overall score of 5 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor.

Only a half dozen customers have seen fit to give them a negative review, and their comments don’t represent the typical experience with this service.

An overwhelming majority of reviews for this service are incredibly positive, recommending this trip to anyone who wants to stay active while discovering the swamps of Louisiana.

Although couples are the most likely audience to leave great reviews, guests who bring their friends along for the journey also enjoy these tours.

Tours Offered

  • Bayou St. John Tour (Beginner)

Located inside the city, Bayou St. John is one of the oldest neighborhoods in New Orleans.

Learn the history of the homes and landmarks, originally settled by Native Americans, and later used for French trading routes.

You’ll weave through cypress trees and experience wildlife on this wetlands kayaking trip.

Never Kayaked?

No problem! The extent of physical skill needed is the ability to paddle, and a lesson is provided at the beginning of the tour.

The company provides all of the necessary equipment for your trip, but since you will be on the water for 2 to 2 ½ hours, you will want to be sure to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and maybe even a hat for shade on the water.

  • Honey Island Tour  $59 per person without transportation
  • Manchac Mystic Tour - $59 per person without transportation
  • Extra $20 for transportation from French Quarter only for Honey Island and Manchac Mystic Tours

KAYAK-ITI-YAT TOURS

The categories (beginner, intermediate & intermediate to advanced) are based on distance, the necessary level of athleticism and exposure to variables/natural elements.

None of the tours require previous kayaking experience.

There are no shuttle transportation costs as all of their tours launch from the city and are reachable by public transportation, bike or a cheap cab ride.

  • Big Easy Bayou (Beginner, 2 hours) $49 per person

Best for first-timers and non-athletic travelers.

This two-hour tour of Bayou St. John is a great way to see the neighborhood and see some wildlife in a relaxed atmosphere.

This is a history-based tour with culture, current events, ecology, and all things relevant to Bayou St. John, its surrounding neighborhoods, and New Orleans.

  • Pontchartrain (Intermediate, 4 hours) $84

Looking for something more active? Check out this four-hour lake tour that runs the length of Bayou St. John and back!

Bonus, you’ll exit the kayak to stretch and walk over to Pontchartrain Lake, and maybe even take a quick swim!

Like the Big Easy Bayou above, expect to learn about the history and culture of the area.

The Big Easy Bayou is your best option for this company, and the only one recommended for beginners.

Looking for more options? Consider looking at New Orleans Kayak Tours (above) for more newcomer-friendly trips.

Before you book...

WARNING: There is NO exiting these tours halfway through and the Bayou Bienvenue 3 hour tour has no bathroom breaks. Be sure you are committed before you buy your tickets.

This tour company is featured in several top travel recommendations for New Orleans, and explorers wishing to see more than Bourbon Street have given it rave reviews!

Instead, we had a bad quality video with sound we could barely hear. A disappointing experience all around, was more like an expensive car rental to the plantations rather than a guided tour. We saw so many gators in the bayou! Plenty of opportunity to get food along the way. Charley and Brian were the best! We got great advice for places to eat and things to do in the city. • mtrs0613 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Whitney A+, tour C- While we thoroughly appreciated the experience at the Whitney Plantation, the tour itself left much to be desired. 1. This tour was combined with a separate tour group who went to another plantation, adding at least an hour to our time in the bus. The description said we would have 3 hours at the Whitney, but we had only two. It was just about the right amount of time, but we felt rushed in the end. 2. We were clearly advised that food was not included, but we naively expected food to be available for purchase at the plantation. Sadly, there was none and we were quite hungry. Plan on bringing a lunch (but not having time to eat it there). 3. The bus was very loud, between the engine, the A/C and the rattling windows, and the seats were very uncomfortable. 4. We were given self-guided audio tour devices which had to be held up to your ear as the audio of headphones provided was poor. One positive note, our bus driver was excellent, charming and very interesting, despite her disclaimer that she is not a tour guide! Highly recommend getting a tour with an actual tour guide on a comfortable bus that doesn’t make stops at other places, and bringing some food along. Read more Written May 15, 2024

Robert was very pleasant and entertaining, as well as informative, as the new and cool bus rolled on to the plantation. Very safe driver. Council could be new party in River District agreement

riverboat city of new orleans

Months after the city of New Orleans was cut out of an operating agreement for the $1 billion River District project, developers are playing nice with a new proposal that gives the City Council oversight of sales and hotel occupancy taxes in the planned neighborhood.

The council is expected on Thursday (May 16) to vote on whether to enter into an existing, 35-year agreement governing the River District, the 39-acre residential and commercial development that aims to transform a stretch of mostly empty riverfront land by the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center into a thriving neighborhood. The expected vote follows a dispute between councilmembers and River District officials and developers, who had cut the council out of the plan entirely late last year.

The proposed contract sets the terms for operations and public subsidies in the development, and authorizes the council to raise sales and hotel taxes within the new neighborhood as a local governing board. The agreement would also increase the amount of sales tax revenue directed toward affordable housing.

“These are transformational projects, things that we can look back on as the council and say that we supported – creating a neighborhood out of whole cloth,” said Councilmember Lesli Harris, who represents the area that includes the River District, at a committee meeting Monday (May 14).

In December, River District and Convention Center officials quietly removed the city from the agreement after council members questioned aspects of the deal. The removal occurred just after the council voted to approve a property tax abatement deal for a new office building — leased to Shell Oil for its regional headquarters — being planned for the River District.

After learning of the move in January, some council members critiqued the massive project over a lack of transparency. River District developers then said they hoped to bring the city back into the agreement.

Jeffrey Schwartz, the city’s director of economic development, and Mike Busada, a lawyer for the developers, presented the amended agreement to the governmental affairs committee Monday.

“What we have in front of us is an improved cooperative endeavor agreement and one that I think, at the end of the day, not only helps the city gets to its aspirations and goals that we want to see in this transformative project, but also provides the structure for governance and transparency and accountability,” Schwartz said.

The proposed agreement creates a new municipal district governed by the council, which would levy and collect an additional  2% in sales and hotel occupancy taxes within the development.

The deal approved in December did not specify the party responsible for levying or collecting the sales taxes. Under the amended deal, the council – acting as the Municipal RDNI District – would levy and collect the additional taxes. The move to give city officials oversight of the tax collection would help ensure transparency and accountability for the River District development, Schwartz said.

The amended contract proposal also raises the minimum percentage of taxes set aside for affordable housing from 10% to 50%.

The master development agreement for the River District requires that 450 units out of approximately 900 planned for the new neighborhood be set aside for affordable or workforce housing, a figure that exceeds the city’s normal zoning requirements.

River District proponents have touted affordable housing as a top priority of the neighborhood, which will also include the Shell Oil building and a Topgolf complex. However, some housing advocates have critiqued the “trickle-down economics” method of relying on commercial projects to fund affordable housing and have asked for penalties if the developers don’t follow through on housing promises.

The amended agreement requires that the initial phase of affordable housing be completed within four years of the passage of the contract. The updated contract does not specify any penalties for failure to meet that timeline.

USA TODAY reached out to Red Lobster on Tuesday and did not get a response prior to publication.

Here's what we know about the closures, including where they're happening and why these restaurants are closing.

Red Lobster considered filing for bankruptcy in April

The seafood chain considered filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month in an effort to restructure its debt,  according to Bloomberg .

The company had been getting advice from law firm King & Spalding as it looked to shed some long-term contracts and renegotiate leases, Bloomberg reported, noting that Red Lobster's cash flows had been weighed down by leases and labor costs, among other issues.

Red Lobster suffered big losses with 'Ultimate Endless Shrimp' promotion

In 2023, the seafood chain's " Ultimate Endless Shrimp " deal became more popular than expected, inadvertently becoming a key factor in a $11 million loss in the third quarter.

The limited-time promotional deal, in which guests picked two types of shrimp to enjoy nonstop for $20, landed a permanent spot on Red Lobster menus in June. Red Lobster's parent company, Thai Union Group, said in November 2023 that the chain was headed toward a $20 million loss for 2023. Now the endless shrimp deal costs $25.

Thai Union Group CFO Ludovic Regis Henri Garnier said in an earnings report call that the company was aware the initial price for the endless-shrimp deal was cheap. The offer was intended to draw customers into restaurants, but orders exceeded expectations, he said.

"We wanted to boost our traffic, and it didn't work," Garnier told investors in November 2023, according to  Restaurant Business Magazine . "We want to keep it on the menu. And of course we need to be much more careful regarding what are the entry points and what is the price point we are offering for this promotion."

Things to Do: New Orleans Riverboat

A ride on the mississippi offers great views and a relaxing time.

Natchez Steamboat

Mark Twain said that the Mississippi River was a wonderful book with a new story to tell every day. Mississippi, a Chippewa Indian word that means “large river” is the life force that has shaped New Orleans history forever, defining and literally shaping the city into its famous Crescent outline. The best way to see what Mark Twain was talking about is to take a paddleboat tour along the hard working river, and travel back to the days when steam-driven river paddle wheelers were the main source of both transportation and commerce. Boat tours leave regularly from the riverfront area adjacent to Woldenberg Park, some offering music and meals, all offering cocktails and narration. So hop aboard one of these.

New Orleans City Council committee moves to have more input on River District development

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -The New Orleans City Council on Monday (May 13) took steps to have more of a say on the proposed $1 billion River District development project.

The waterfront project, being described as transformational, would include a new hotel, corporate headquarters, golf entertainment venue and affordable housing units.

Supporters of the project envision development on a 39-acre site just upriver from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The City Council pushed the reset button on the project, after some council members claimed they were shut out of the process.

Under a new agreement brought forward to the council’s Governmental Affairs committee, the City of New Orleans would be a full partner with the convention center and the River District Neighborhood Investors group, which was selected by the convention center to be the developer of this project back in 2021.

The new partnership could levy up to two cents in sales taxes and two pennies of hotel/motel taxes in the future, for new developments on the property. Proponents say the proceeds would go toward the creation of at least 450 affordable housing units on the site.

The city’s economic development director says the new partnership will give council members more say on how the riverfront development project moves forward.

“Today, tomorrow and 40 years from now, this will be the entity that guides the flow of funds that comes out of any new sales or hotel occupancy taxes that come out of this project, full stop,” said city economic development director Jeff Schwartz.

Councilwoman Lesli Harris said, “Since Day 1, I’ve had two priorities in this project: First and foremost is affordable housing, and this project will exceed the requirement of 10 percent of the units going to affordable housing.”

At one time, the land upriver of the convention center was envisioned for another expansion of the massive building. But convention center officials instead voted to build a convention center hotel and other amenities on the site.

The new agreement now goes to the full council for approval.

Port of New Orleans' chief resigning amid praise for moves to advance new cargo terminal project

NEW ORLEANS — (AP) — The Port of New Orleans' president and chief executive officer, who won praise for advancing plans for a new international cargo terminal project, is resigning to pursue an opportunity in the private sector.

Brandy Christian, who has served in the leadership post since 2017, will step down in mid-June, the port said Tuesday in a news release praising her for “exemplary leadership.” Her next steps were not immediately disclosed.

“Under Christian’s guidance, Port NOLA has navigated through profound challenges and achieved remarkable successes. ... Through her vision and leadership, Christian has positioned Port NOLA to regain its place as the premier destination within the global supply chain as we embark on a transformational economic development project in the Louisiana International Terminal," said Walter Leger Jr., chairman of the port's Board of Commissioners.

Christian was seen as instrumental in moving forward with a state-of-the-art terminal project, also known as LIT, which is likely to start construction next year in Violet. Officials said they hope the project, once completed, would stem the bleeding of container cargo volume to competitors including the nearby port in Mobile, Alabama.

Christian came to New Orleans from the Port of San Diego, where she had started in the ports sector after three years as a management consultant following post-graduate work on public sector management at the University of Southern California. She has been one of only about a dozen women in charge of major U.S. ports since she took the top job at Port NOLA.

Chief Financial Officer Ronald Wendel Jr. will serve as the port’s interim leader. The port didn’t immediately say how it plans to conduct a formal search to replace Christian.

Christian led the acquisition of the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad, which gave the port control of the city's switching rail infrastructure and direct access to all six Class I national rail operators, the Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate reported.
