A Charter With The 'Below Deck' Crew Will Cost You
From Lifestyles Of The Rich & Famous to MTV Cribs , TV viewers have always been fascinated by fancy houses, crazy-big yachts, and the contents of famous people’s fridges. In that vein, a whole new season of Below Deck is on deck (sorry, had to) on Bravo, and the previews already have me dreaming of winning the lottery and getting my very own yacht to cruise around the British Virgin Islands with. But how much does it cost to charter the Valor, Below Deck 's new yacht? Let’s just say that I’ll need to really hit the lottery hard to have a chance of taking out that bad boy.
According to Yacht Charter Fleet, the Valor, which was previously named BG, is 154-feet long, sleeps up to 12 guests , and has a crew of 10. Built in 1990 and completely refitted in 2015 in a “Hampton-style” interior, the Valor offers “the very best in amenities and lounging options.” And it can be all yours for the low, low price of €140,000 per week, or $158,000 per week, plus expenses. Chump change, right?
While I’m not going to be renting a yacht for a week at that cost (I think I could afford a rowboat, maybe), a gal can dream, so here’s what I would do with the new cast of Below Deck on my British Virgin Island adventure.
Make Ben Whip Up Luxe Meals Just For Me
Ben, the resident chef on Below Deck , has plenty of experience with picky eaters on the yacht. Lucky for him, I am the opposite of picky — I eat everything. I would want him to whip me up complicated, luxurious meal so I can dine while overlooking the crystal blue waters of Tortola and think about how fabulous I am.
Ask Kate To Iron My Most Wrinkled Pieces
I am really great with doing laundry — it’s a chore I don’t mind — but I am pretty hopeless at ironing. It’s the bane of my existence. Sure, I can manage to make a t-shirt look unwrinkled, but if there is anything with seams or pleats or starch, it’s an ugly mess and I end up having it dry cleaned. Kate, however, presses all of her stew uniforms and she always looks like a million bucks, so if I were on the Valor, I might bring some of my laundry just so she can put her trademark creases on my pants.
Chill Out With Captain Lee
The captain doesn’t really fraternize with the guests on the yacht, save for a cocktail or two, but I want to sit with Captain Lee and pick his brain about all of his life experiences. You know that the guy has seen more than his fair share of crazy places and faces, and I want to hear all about his life on the water. I also want to talk about his favorite and least favorite Below Deck crew members — what he really thinks about them.
Like I said, my wallet is a little thin right now to be chartering a yacht like the Valor, but if I ever manage to save up $158,000, I think a week with the Below Deck crew would be well worth it.

How Much Does It Cost To Rent The Yachts On Below Deck?
Watching Bravo's Below Deck , it's kind of impossible not to fantasize about renting one of the featured luxury yachts for yourself. For most of us regular folks, the idea of lounging around having every need tended to by a crew of hot, young twentysomethings is an experience we're only going to get watching this particular show (and its drama-filled spin-off, Below Deck Mediterranean , of course).
Still, it's fun to dream. And if our funds ever permit us to, the first stop would be one of these huge boats replete with gold bathroom fixtures, luxuriously expansive guest cabins, and Michelin-star service. So, how much exactly would that set you back?
The Below Deck yachts do not come cheap
According to Worldwide Boat, the cheapest you can rent one of the featured yachts (the Ohana, from season 2) is $140,000 per week. The rest range in price all the way up to a whopping €231,000 (around $256,000 per week) for the Talisman Maiton, which was featured on Below Deck Med season 3.
According to Yacht Charter Fleet , the smaller super-yachts, including the Ionian Princess , the Valor , and the Sirocco , rent for approximately $154,000 to $199,500 per week, depending on the season and the boat. The good news, though, is the Ohana is $140,000 per week at any time of year, so it's something of a bargain compared to the others.
As for the mid-range yachts, the Eros is currently not available for rent, nor is the recently-redone Honor . The biggest super-yachts, meanwhile, are way out of seemingly anybody's price range. The aforementioned Talisman Maiton goes for the same massive fee no matter the time of year, while My Seanna , at 185 feet, is $294,000 a week in the winter and $315,500 a week in summer.
Appearing on Below Deck might save you some money
Those looking to appear on Below Deck might get a discount as, according to The Forward Cabin , charter guests who feature only pay around $11,000 each for the privilege, and that includes airfare, hotels, and more. The charters are shorter, however, clocking in at just a few days each according to Worldwide Boat .
It's still a massive discount considering the show's own Kate Chastain told ET , "Generally a boat that size, 150 foot — this one's 160, Valor — but around that price range, for seven days, is around $150,000. But that does not include airfare, fuel, food, wine, docking, tip. So, I would say for a boat like Valor, for a week vacation, it would be around a quarter of a million dollars."
If you're more interested in owning rather than renting a yacht, be forewarned; Denison Yachting advises it'll cost around $4.75 million annually for a 180-foot vessel, including around $400,00 for fuel, $350,000 for dockage, $240,000 for vessel insurance, $1 million for maintenance and repairs, and $1.4 million for crew salaries.
They're definitely pricey, but the Below Deck yachts are worth it
Chartering a luxury yacht, particularly one featured on Below Deck, costs so much for one major reason: You're getting a first class experience. As noted by Worldwide Boat , the expert crews working these boats are the best of the best (despite what the hit show and its spin-off, may lead us to believe), and the amenities boasted by each truly have to be seen to be believed. Put simply, this is a once in a lifetime vacation.
Take the Ionian Princess, which boasts a sun deck featuring a Jacuzzi and breathtaking views. The gorgeous boat, originally built in 2005, also includes luxury accommodations across six cabins for up to 12 guests. Likewise, the Dutch-built Sirocco, which was made in 2006, also features a sun deck but it's equipped with a gym, making it even more special. Elsewhere on-board there's an alfresco party deck, theater, and plenty of other amenities for fun both on and off the water.
The yachts featured on Below Deck are basically floating luxury hotels
The mighty Talisman Maiton, meanwhile, fittingly named for a stunning Thai island, is a superb, tri-deck yacht. Although it accommodates 12 guests total, the boat also features a master suite and a VIP stateroom, so exclusivity is key. It was refit in 2016 (the yacht was originally built in 2006) and now features a glorious sun deck and spa pool complete with a bar, gym, and an all-important observation deck with panoramic views.
The huge My Seanna also boasts a master suite and VIP stateroom, as well as a chic beach club, fittings brushed in 22 carat gold, a sundeck sauna and gym, helipad, and even an outdoor movie theater. Act quickly and you might just get a discount on it, as Yacht Charter Fleet previously advertised that the first three charters to the Bahamas this past summer were subject to an insane 35 percent price reduction.
Chartering a Below Deck yacht is something most of us will only ever dream of doing, but it's not hard to understand why those who have the cash choose to splash out for the privilege.

'BG' feadship Superyacht
This 33-year-old superyacht ‘BG’ comes from the world-renowned Dutch shipyard Feadship and features their classic exterior lines. She was built back in 1990 at their De Vries shipyard in the Netherlands and has since undergone refits in 2015 and 2022. She has a length of 46.9m, a beam of 8.8m and she sits in the water with a 2.9m draft.
This world cruiser has a steel mono hull, topped by an aluminium superstructure. Her design and naval architecture is the work of award-winning Frits De Voogt. With a gross tonnage of 515, she is propelled through the water by her twin CAT 3508 DITA diesel engines (905 hp each) at a top speed of 15 knots. When cruising at 12 knots she has a max range of 5000 nautical miles with a fuel capacity of 69,800 litres.
Her interior design was the work of New York based McMillen Design, and her later reconfiguration is courtesy of Toronto based Dee Dee Taylor Eustace, founder of Taylor Hannah Architect Inc. She features high-end finishes in dark woods contrasted against refreshing bright whites, creating a beach house vibe that’s straight out of the Hamptons.
BG can accommodate 12 guests in 6 spacious luxury cabins. The Master cabin and VIP cabin are full beam and are situated on the main deck. The 4 guest cabins are situated on the lower deck. All cabins have en suite bathrooms. She also has accommodation for 11 experienced crew members.
In amongst the meticulous craftsmanship, notable state-of-the-art amenities include an outdoor deck jacuzzi, a gym, outdoor projector screen, a hydraulic swim platform, plus an exquisite wine cellar in the salon containing 120 bottles.
BG boasts a plethora of water toys to entertain guests of all ages. She offers 2x Yamaha jet skis, waterskis, inflatable climbing wall and waterslides, paddleboards, kneeboards and wakeboards, kayaks, snorkelling equipment, plus 4x F5 seabobs. She also has 2 tenders on board; a 9.8m Intrepid Tender and a 5.5m Novurania Tender.
BG was previously named Charade. She is Feadship’s 110th-largest yacht, and she is the 1181st-largest yacht in the world. In 2016 she was a finalist in The World Superyacht Awards for ‘best refitted/rebuilt yacht’. Not only that, but she is a TV star after appearing in several seasons of Below Deck where she was named Valor for the show.
BG stands for the owner's initials; Bobby Genovese, a Canadian self-made businessman. The entrepreneur is the founder of BG Capital Management Corporation, BG Signature, and BG Capital Group Ltd. Back in 2014, the motor yacht was purchased for 11,990,000 USD. Then in 2022, the motor yacht was for sale with an asking price of 16,900,000 USD. She has since arrived at the prestigious marina at Sentosa Cove, Singapore, where she moors outside the distinguished ONE°15 yacht club.

Who Pays for the Below Deck Yacht? We Finally Have the Answer
The memories may be priceless, but the charters aren't.
A vacation doesn't get more luxurious than the getaways we see on Below Deck , Below Deck Mediterranean , and Below Deck Sailing Yacht . These vessels cruise around the most breathtaking locations in the world, letting the guests experience everything the diverse cultures have to offer, all while the crew fulfills their every wish and whim.
How to Watch
Watch Below Deck on Bravo Mondays at 9/8c and next day on Peacock . Catch up on the Bravo App .
This kind of luxury definitely doesn't look cheap — and it isn't, with the charter guests paying for everything, including that stack of cash they hand over to the captain to tip the crew, as Mark Cronin, who has been an executive producer on every season of Below Deck , Below Deck Med , and Below Deck Sailing Yacht confirmed to The Daily Dish during an interview last month. “They spend their real money to be on the show," he explained. "And then the tip they leave, they decide what it is."
Below Deck Producers Spill Behind-the-Scenes Secrets
It sounds like chartering the Below Deck yacht has been totally worth it for the charter guests who have appeared on the show, according to Courtland Cox, who has also served as executive producer on every season of Below Deck and Below Deck Med .
“They’re not people that are coming on because they feel like this is a good chance for them to get on TV. This is a great experience for them to charter a very large yacht with a very experienced and fun crew and have an amazing three-day charter in an amazing location,” he told The Daily Dish last month. “I want them to enjoy their charter and not be afraid to ask for things if they want. And I think that at the end of their charters, like, every charter guest we’ve had has said this has been an amazing experience.”

Luxury yacht BG , known as VALOR on the Below Deck Series , might be the most recognisable vessel from the Below Deck series as she featured in not one but three series. Memorable moments onboard include a salad ‘nightmare’, a back waxing and a medical scare to go along with plenty of partying on board. Motor yacht BG was built by renowned Dutch shipyard Feadship in 1990, and of course, received an extensive refit in 2015 before filming took place on board from 2016 onwards. Today, charter guests can expect the same gorgeous interiors, lavish outdoor areas and an impressive selection of water toys.

The upper deck aft is the main outdoor living area and will see much use throughout the charter thanks to its large alfresco dining table and abundance of seating and sun loungers. The area can be shaded for all-day outdoor use and is the perfect place to return to and nap after taking the water slide or the climbing wall over the edge. Side walkways will take guests around to the Portuguese deck in front of the bridge, where there is a row of sunbeds with panoramic views.
Guests looking for the Jacuzzi will find it on the sundeck aft, a tranquil environment compared to the social hub below. The sunbeds forward allow guests to rest together in privacy, with sweeping views of the surrounding scenery.
Master Suite

How Much Does it Cost To Rent the Yacht on Below Deck?
Although this might be a little hard for some people to believe, it’s been almost a decade since Below Deck aired its debut episode. In the years since the show has been on the air, viewers have gotten the chance to vicariously travel all over the world on expensive yachts. If you’ve ever seen the show, you know that the yachts are top of the line and have almost all of the comforts of being on land. Although it’s common knowledge that renting the kind of yachts that are featured on the show isn’t cheap, most people don’t know exactly how much it costs. So, just how pricey is it to rent a yacht from Below Deck? You actually might be a little surprised. Keep reading to find out how much it costs to rent a yacht on Below Deck .
What You Can Expect To Pay?
Since its debut, there have been five different yachts featured in eight seasons of the show. Both Valor and My Seanna have been on the show more than once. If you’ve been watching the show since the beginning, you know just how nice these yachts are. Just in case you were wondering, the yachts that have been on Below Deck are typically worth between $15 to $20 million. With that being said, the price to rent the yacht for a week can vary depending on which vessel you’re interested in.
According to Worldwide Boat , “Hiring a yacht from Below Deck isn’t cheap. The majority cost in the neighborhood of $150,000 per week. Yet, that charter rate doesn’t include expenses, including fuel, dockage fees, and taxes.” If you thought $150,000 was a crazy amount of money, wait until you hear this: Yacht Charter Fleet reports that My Seanna starts at $300,000 per week which makes it double the price of some of the ‘cheaper’ rentals.
Since $150,000 is more than 3x the average American salary, it’s safe to say that a weekly yacht rental simply isn’t feasible for the majority of Americans. Those who can afford it, however, can rest assured that their hundreds of thousands of dollars will come with an experience that they will never forget.
What Kind Of Features Do The Yachts Offer?
Since each yacht offers something a little bit different, we’ll focus specifically on Valor and My Seanna since those yachts have been featured on the show multiple times. But regardless, each of the yachts that has been seen on the show is incredibly comfortable.
With 185 feet of space, My Seanna is considered a ‘super yacht’ and it’s the biggest to ever be featured on the show. The vessel was built in 2001 and has enough room to comfortably sleep 12 guests as well as accommodate 12 onboard crew members. My Seanna also boats amenities for added comfort including WiFi, a fitness center, and a jacuzzi. Of course, to the average person $300,000 a week still sounds like a lot for all of those things.
Even though the yacht is always referred to Valor on Below Deck, it’s real name is BG. It was built in 1990 and was the first yacht to ever make a second appearance on Below Deck . Despite being 30 years old, Valor has more than 150 feet of space and features a classy design that is sure to appeal to the masses. On top of aesthetics, Valor features all of the comforts a person could need while at sea including WiFi and a fitness center.
Discounted Prices For Below Deck
All of the yachts that have been featured on Below Deck are also available to be rented outside of the show. That’s great news for those who want a Below Deck experience without having to be on TV for it. On the other hand, those who are featured on the show get a nice little deal on the price of their yacht rental. After all, they are giving the network content by allowing themselves to be filmed.
According to Distractify , “guests get a 50 percent discount on the three-day charters, and their airfare is covered by production. The guests are responsible for paying the tips, however, which are supposed to be 15 to 20 percent of the total real cost of the charter.” In reality though, even the discounted price is still more than most people are willing/able to spend.
At the end of the day, renting one of the yachts from Below Deck isn’t something that most people will ever do, but it’s still cool to know just how much it costs to have such a luxurious experience.

Below Deck Yachts
If you’ve never seen the show, it follows the crew of a luxury yacht during peak “charter season.” The original Below Deck, for example, showed off the glitz and glamour of the Caribbean, especially around St. Thomas, the British Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas. The Mediterranean spin-off, on the other hand, highlights European hotspots, including Italy, Spain and Croatia.
The show is undeniably a ton of fun. From the drama in the crew quarters, to the incredible beaches, the show provides an entertaining look behind the curtain.
Yet, the chartered superyachts are the real stars of the show. Each season, Below Deck features a truly stunning super yacht. All of them measure over 150 feet and are decked out in opulent features, staterooms and amenities. And here’s something you might not know: The majority of the Below Deck yachts are available for charter!
Below Deck Charter Yachts
Through five seasons, Below Deck has featured some of the most magnificent super yachts in the world. Some of the yachts have changed ownership since the show, been renamed, or have undergone a refitting. Yet, most look like they did from the show.
But beyond the name and maybe a few changes to the interior, there aren’t many differences. All of the water toys, Jacuzzis and stunning outdoor dining areas are what you’ll find on the yachts available for charter! So which charter yachts are available?
Here’s a more detailed look at the yachts featured on the original Below Deck:
Honor – Season 1
Honor (which is now LUMIERE) kicked off the first season, and she put on a dazzling display. The yacht, originally built by Benetti in 1999, is one of the largest yachts ever featured on the show, and it was actually booked for a five-week charter for filming.
HONOR benefited from the new-found fame of the show. She sold after it aired for nearly $15 million, and the new owners completely refit her interiors and renamed the boat. Today, LUMIERE is a masterpiece of nautical engineering.
She features luxurious accommodations for up to 12 guests and an abundance of deck space, including a sprawling sun deck. The yacht also features a wide array of water toys (the slide was a struggle for the crew all season!).
Ohana – Season 2
Season 2 took the crew on a tour of the British Virgin Islands and featured some familiar faces. Captain Lee, Chef Ben, and Bosun Eddie were back, much to the pleasure of fans. Yet, the yacht was completely different.
OHANA (real name is RHINO) was featured on the second season, a stunning 154-footer, with beautiful decks, a horseshoe outdoor bar, and a stunning outdoor sun deck. After the show aired in 2014, Ohana underwent an extensive retrofit.
She now features an updated interior with a decidedly modern, airy vibe, as well as new hardware, including a state-of-the-art stabilization system.
Eros – Season 3
EROS took centerstage in Season 3, and the 161-foot yacht, originally built for the founder of Tim Hortons, was one of the most luxurious featured on the show. The beautiful tri-deck, featured a stately saloon, a sky lounge Jacuzzi, and sleek exterior styling.
EROS – which was sold prior to the third season – has since been renamed and was also remodeled. She’s now known as Mustang Sally, and unfortunately, this is one of the few Below Deck charter yachts that’s not available for charter.
Valor – Seasons 4 & 5
The stately VALOR was a fan favorite in Season 4 and 5. Built in 1990 by Dutch-based Feadship, the 154-foot VALOR featured a sprawling aft deck, perfect for sunset dinners and afternoon lounges. Plus, the ship – when featured on the show – had a range of water toys, including dual jet skis and a sleek, boutique hotel-inspired interior.
Like Mustang Sally, VALOR – which is now known as simply BG – isn’t available for charter. Yet, fans will always remember all the drama that took place on board.
Below Deck Mediterranean Yachts
Below Deck Mediterranean premiered in 2016, and through three seasons, the show has featured some of the Med’s best yachts. All of the yachts from the Mediterranean spin-off are available for charter, exactly how you see them on the show.
Ionian Princess – Season 1
Season 1 of Below Deck Mediterranean launched with a bang, featuring one of the strongest premieres for the franchise. Although there was plenty of drama throughout the season as the crew traveled around Greece, the beauty of IONIAN PRINCESS couldn’t be missed. The ship, which was originally built in the U.S. in 2005, featured a sleek, streamlined tri-deck design and gorgeous interiors.
The sun deck – where guests partied all season long – is one of the yacht’s star attractions, featuring a Jacuzzi with world-class views. Her interior, though, is one of the most stunning, featuring a chic design. The yacht also includes six cabins with accommodations for up to 12 guests.
Sirocco – Season 2
Season 2 took the crew to Croatia, aboard SIROCCO. The Dutch-built yacht originally launched in 2006, and thanks to its unique two-tone, third-deck exterior, she was remembered for her striking exterior. All of the yacht’s features made great TV. From her incredible sun deck, to the African chic interior, and all of the many water toys, SIROCCO’s impressive design and amenities stood out.
Today, she’s available for charter throughout the Mediterranean. A few unique features include a sun deck gym, an alfresco party deck, a theatre, and a wide array of water toys.
Talisman Maiton – Season 3
Named for an island in Thailand, TAILSMAN MAITON is a stunning tri-deck that cruises the pristine waters of Italy and all of the Mediterranean. The largest to ever be featured on the show, TAILSMAN is truly incredible.
The yacht accommodates 12 guests, in 6 beautifully appointed rooms. There’s a master suite, as well as 1 VIP stateroom, and four smaller cabins. The yacht was built in 2006, but most recently refit in 2016 with a timeless Art Deco aesthetic. The yacht also features a sundeck spa pool with a beautiful bar, a full-service gym, and an observation deck with panoramic views.
How Long Are the Below Deck Charters?
Here’s a little-known secret about Below Deck: The “charter season” on the show is just a few weeks. In fact, the yachts are actually booked for about six weeks, and their regular crews are sent home. In other words, the charters on Below Deck are actually a charter within a charter!
Each of the Below Deck charters last just a few days, and each episode features new charter guests.

Hiring a yacht from Below Deck isn’t cheap. The majority cost in the neighborhood of $150,000 per week. Yet, that charter rate doesn’t include expenses, including fuel, dockage fees, and taxes.
Yet, for that price, you’ll get a truly world-class experience. The crews of each of these yachts provide first-class service and all of the boats are fully loaded with amenities. There’s nothing quite like it in the world. And by hiring one of these superyachts, you’ll also have bragging rights for chartering a yacht featured on a TV show!

How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Yacht on 'Below Deck'? The Answer, Plus More Fun Facts
Who else can't get enough of the Bravo show?
If you’re a Bravo fan, then you’ve certainly caught an episode or two of Below Deck .
Below Deck has been on since 2013, but whether you're a longtime fan or a new one, you likely have some questions. Like, who pays for the charters? Is Kate Chastain ever going to come back? And uh….how much does renting the yacht cost? Asking for a friend.
The answers to all of that, plus more fun facts below!
Soo, how much does it cost to rent the "Below Deck" yacht?
Longtime star Kate admitted to Entertainment Tonight in 2017 that it costs a pretty penny to charter a Below Deck yacht.
“Generally a boat that size, 150 foot...for seven days, is around $150,000,” she said. “But that does not include airfare, fuel, food, wine, docking, tip. So, I would say for a boat like Valor, for a week vacation, it would be around a quarter of a million dollars.” 😱
Anyone want to split it a few ways or...?
And yes, the guests do actually pay to charter the yacht.
Bravo's not handing out free ocean adventures! (Bummer.) The guests you see on the show pay their way—tip included.
“They spend their real money to be on the show,” producer Mark Cronin said . “And then the tip they leave, they decide what it is.”
Fellow producer Courtland Cox also mentioned that most people aren’t doing this just to get on TV. “This is a great experience for them to charter a very large yacht with a very experienced and fun crew and have an amazing three-day charter in an amazing location,” he said.
Apparently it wasn’t easy to get a "Below Deck" cast together.
According to Mark and Courtland, it was difficult to scrounge together the cast for season 1. “Initially, it was very hard to get yacht crew members to commit to doing the show because it was an unknown entity,” Courtland told Bravo . People (understandably) didn’t want to “jeopardize their future employment potential.”
But once it got going, it was easy to attract more interested folks. "The vast majority of people that do the show, they always say, 'I want to do the show because I want my friends and family to understand what my job is,'" Courtland said. "And they’re like, 'If I go on Below Deck , I will have a tangible, visible thing for my family and friends to understand what my job is.'"
Kate Chastain *might* be coming back.
Kate left Below Deck in 2020 after serving as the chief stew since season 2. She told Bravo , “I just feel like I’m 37 and a half—and I don’t think a girl should be wearing a skort at 38.” Fair! 😂
But now, there are whispers that Kate might return. She recently parted ways with Bravo’s Chat Room , and some fans think it's because she’s making space for Below Deck . Regardless of if she returns to the original show, she will definitely be appearing on the upcoming spinoff, Below Deck: Galley Talk , according to ET .
The show—and the drama—is real.
Fans always wonder if reality shows are scripted or not, but the producers say Below Deck is the real deal.
“I think people are so jaded by reality TV, they think that everything is thought ahead five steps or eight steps, and we are really genuinely filming what’s happening on a working charter yacht with people that are working on the yacht,” Courtland said. “I wish that I had the imagination and creativity to come up with the things that actually happen on the show because the things that happen on the show I could never in a million years come up with, could never imagine them.”
Interesting! Now, who's ready for a Below Deck marathon?

Yacht Charter vs. Boat Rental: Understanding the Difference When You Want to Rent a Boat
Understanding the differences between boat rent vs. charter is key for those planning their next boating experience, as it helps determine the level of service, amenities, and overall experience they desire. Planning a family outing? It may be a smarter option to rent a boat for a fun-filled day of fishing and picnicking on the water. When you rent a boat, you can also explore remote islands and secluded coves for a private island-hopping excursion. On the other hand, when you charter a yacht, you have a level of comfort and service that goes beyond what you might experience on a typical boat rental.
Boat renting is a popular choice for those seeking a flexible and budget-friendly way to enjoy a day out on the water with friends or family. If you’re planning a corporate retreat or team-building event, choosing to rent a boat makes for a unique and memorable experience on the water. However, before embarking on your next boating adventure, it's essential to understand how to rent a boat, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience on the water.
In this article, we’ll explore the difference between boat rental vs. charters and help set the expectations for each.
What is a Boat Rental?
A boat rental typically involves the short-term use of a vessel, ranging from small motorboats to larger recreational boats. Renters pay for the duration of their use, often by the hour or day, and are responsible for operating the boat themselves unless they choose to pay for additional services like a captain or crew.
With a boat rental, you're essentially securing temporary access to a watercraft for a specified period. The rental duration is flexible, with options available for hourly, daily, or even weekly use, depending on your needs and preferences.
One of the primary appeals of boat rentals is the freedom they afford. Renters have the autonomy to plan their own itinerary, deciding where to go and how long to stay at each destination. But with this freedom also comes responsibility. Renters are typically expected to operate the boat themselves, assuming the role of captain and crew. Prior boating experience is helpful but not always necessary, as many rental companies offer basic instruction and safety guidelines to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
What is a Yacht Charter?
Boat chartering offers an elevated experience with luxurious amenities and professional crew, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a premium maritime adventure. In contrast to traditional boat rentals, yacht charters typically are more opulent and indulgent. Boat charters typically involve the rental of a luxury vessel, ranging from sleek motor yachts to majestic sailing ships, outfitted with an array of amenities. Unlike shorter-term rentals, yacht charters are booked for more extended periods, spanning several days, weeks, or even months, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the luxury lifestyle of the sea.
Central to the allure of yacht charters is the inclusion of a professional crew dedicated to ensuring your comfort and satisfaction throughout the journey. The captain is skilled in navigating the intricacies of the seas, the talented kitchen staff is capable of crafting exquisite meals, and the yacht crew members are there to anticipate your needs and exceed your expectations. Whether basking in the sun on the expansive deck, indulging in a rejuvenating spa treatment, or savoring a gourmet meal under the stars, a yacht charter promises a level of luxury and sophistication that is beyond ordinary.
Boat Rental vs. Yacht Charter: Expectations and Differences
Experience level required.
Boat Rental: No special licenses or experience are required for boat rentals, although some companies may offer basic training. Enjoy the freedom of being on your own, making boat rentals accessible to everyone.
Yacht Charter: Yacht charters often require experienced sailors or may include a professional captain and crew to handle navigation and operation. When you rent a boat with a knowledgeable captain, you can navigate the waters and discover hidden gems along the shoreline.
Type of Vessels Available
Boat Rental: Rentals typically include a range of vessels, from small fishing boats and pontoons to speedboats and cabin cruisers. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a novice fisherman, rent a boat for the perfect day of fishing, or rent a boat equipped with water sports gear for an exhilarating day of tubing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing.
Yacht Charter: Yacht charters offer larger, more luxurious vessels equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, such as multiple cabins, spacious decks, and sometimes even onboard spas or cinemas.
Duration of Rental
Boat Rental: Rentals are usually available for shorter durations, ranging from a few hours to a day or weekend. A great option is YBC, which not only offers week-long rentals but also provides the flexibility of month-long rentals, catering to a variety of needs and preferences.
Yacht Charter: Charters are typically booked for longer periods, such as a week or more, allowing for extended cruising and exploration of multiple destinations.
Included Services
Boat Rental: Basic boat rentals may include the vessel and safety equipment, with optional add-ons like fuel, insurance, and water sports gear available for an extra fee.
Yacht Charter: Charters often include a full crew, including a captain, chef, and deckhands, as well as gourmet meals, beverages, and water toys, with some luxury charters even offering spa treatments and private excursions.
Cost Considerations
Boat Rental: Rental costs for smaller vessels are generally lower compared to yacht charters, making them more accessible for casual outings or budget-conscious travelers. With affordable hourly rates, it's easy to rent a boat for a spontaneous adventure with friends.
Yacht Charter: Yacht charters can be significantly more expensive due to the luxury experience and included services, with prices varying depending on factors such as the size of the yacht, destination, and time of year.
Conclusion: Which Option is Best for You?
The primary difference between boat rental and yacht charter lies in the level of luxury and service offered, with boat rentals providing a more casual experience and yacht charters delivering a high-end, all-inclusive voyage. If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, grab a friend and rent a boat for a peaceful morning cruise along the coastline. If you’re looking for a casual day out on the water, rent a boat if you want the flexibility to navigate on your own and prefer a more budget-friendly option. Rent a boat for a romantic getaway and enjoy a leisurely cruise under the stars with your loved one. Or, rent a boat and explore the serene beauty of the lake at your own pace.
Choose a yacht charter if you are looking for a luxurious experience with personalized service, wish to explore multiple destinations in comfort and style, and are willing to invest in a longer-term boating excursion.
Ultimately, whether you choose a boat rental or yacht charter depends on your preferences, budget, and the type of experience you're seeking. Regardless of your choice, both options offer fantastic opportunities to enjoy the beauty of the water and create unforgettable memories with friends, family, or colleagues.

Inside Below Deck Season 5 Superyacht VALOR

By Oliver Pearson 18 July 2017
Airing on the 5th September, Below Deck season 5 sees the return of fan favourite Captain Lee Rosbach as well as superyacht VALOR, the charter yacht which featured on Below Deck season 4.
The first time a superyacht has featured twice on Bravo’s popular Below Deck TV series, VALOR will be returning to viewer’s screens this fall along with a number of fresh and familiar cast members.
Indeed, the much loved Chef Ben Robinson- a favoruite who has featured on each Below Deck season before now- has made way for Chef Matt Burns, whilst mainstays Kate Chastain and Nico Scholly will be resuming their roles as chief stewardess and senior deckhand respectively.
As we revealed in an exclusive last year, VALOR is in actual fact the 47m/154ft motor yacht BG . Built by world-leading shipyard Feadship, she is available for charter in the Mediterranean during summer and the Caribbean during winter.
Having been on board the motor yacht for a guided tour and cocktails at the Palm Beach Boat Show , you can read our full review here , as well as taking a full look inside with the pictures and information found below.
A wholly modern motor yacht built by the prestigious Dutch shipyard Feadship, superyacht BG is defined by her excellence. Indeed, by bringing together the very best in luxury amenities amidst a calm environment, her interior is sure to please everyone who steps on board.
Expertly refit in 2015 by Dee Dee Taylor Eustace, a celebrity architect and interior designer who established Taylor Hannah Architect Inc, the playful contrast of bright whites and colour make her as unique as she is comfortable.
It’s thefore unsurprising that the yacht is returning for a second season of Below Deck, with both the communal and guest spaces featured around the interior lending themselves perfectly for a show all about the glamour of the superyacht lifestyle.
Lovingly designed and full of the latest features, superyacht BG is perfectly designed for memorable charter vacations
Sure to be the stage for all the action to take place on this season, the exterior of luxury yacht BG is equipped with all of the latest and most desired features.
The sprawling sunpads on the sundeck, for example, are only a short distance away from a large Jacuzzi, an arrangement which allows the entire party to gather together for some stylish fun in the sun.
Steps on both the port and starboard side of the aft deck promise easy access to the full beam swim platform which has been superbly extended for greater access to the water. From this platform guests are able to effortlessly board tenders, begin playing with her catalogue of towable water toys, or simply dive into the ocean to cool off.
Also boasting an inflatable slide which can be attached to the sundeck, guests on board have the option of entering the water in the coolest fashion.
Read here for further information on any of the yachts featured in the Below Deck TV series , or contact your preferred charter broker if you are interested in inquiring about a vacation on-board M/Y BG.

Kidnapping arrest: 4th person taken into custody after woman found tied up in jasper county.
- Copy Link Copy {copyShortcut} to copy Link copied!
A fourth person is now in custody after a woman was kidnapped and left tied up near a boat landing in Jasper County back in April.
The Jasper County Sheriff's Office told WJCL 22 News the woman was spotted at Corner Lake Landing on April 3 . JCSO requested assistance from SLED that same day.
According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the investigation determined that the woman was kidnapped in Barnwell County.
The Barnwell County Sheriff's Office obtained kidnapping warrants on April 3 for 31-year-old Adrienne Burgen Ginn, 34-year-old Kaila Terria Bostick and 30-year-old Jamaal Terrell Riley.
SLED said Ginn was arrested on April 6 in Hampton County by the South Carolina Highway Patrol for driving under suspension, second offense.
On April 11, U.S. Marshals arrested Bostick and Riley in Indiana.
SLED charged a fourth person, 42-year-old Marquis Antwan Smith, with accessory after the fact to kidnapping on Tuesday, May 21.
According to the warrant, Smith willfully assisted Bostick and Riley in fleeing the area after they committed the offenses of assault and battery, kidnapping and attempted armed robbery. Investigators claim Smith had knowledge the crimes were being committed as the offenses were happening. After the crimes had been committed, investigators said Smith took them to Augusta International Airport where he tried to help them rent a car.
Smith was booked into the Hampton County Detention Center. The case will be prosecuted by the 14th Circuit Solicitor's Office.
SLED's investigation is active and ongoing.
San Diego boat-rental sites spark concern, lawsuit over safety verification
The city advises renters to use brick-and-mortar businesses, with safety top of mind after a 12-year-old paddleboarder was hit by a jet ski and killed on mission bay last summer, by shelby bremer • published may 23, 2024 • updated on may 23, 2024 at 6:44 pm.
As San Diego heads into the summer season, boat traffic on the bays is about to pick up. With that comes a warning on illegal boat rentals that pose a safety risk out on the water.
“I feel that we have an existential threat by having a dangerous situation on the bay,” said Andy Kurtz.
24/7 San Diego news stream: Watch NBC 7 free wherever you are
Kurtz has owned Seaforth Boat Rentals on Mission Bay and San Diego Bay for more than 40 years, tasking his staff with safety checks for every boat and every rental.
“Every time we send somebody out, it’s like a whole script of all of these points that we need to hit,” Seaforth employee Payton Cheatwood said. “It’s important that we all know what we’re talking about, so that way, whenever we send a renter out, they’re also equipped with all the knowledge.”
Get San Diego local news, weather forecasts, sports and lifestyle stories to your inbox. Sign up for NBC San Diego newsletters.
Kurtz said he’s concerned about the rise of third-party websites that enable people to rent boats directly from owners. Many of those sites don’t have a mechanism to verify all the legal requirements to rent a vessel, like proper insurance and commercial licensing.
Now, Kurtz is suing one of those sites – Getmyboat.com – to try to force them to put those checks in place.
Getmyboat said it doesn’t comment on pending litigation, but as to questions over its safety verification, a spokesperson for the company said in a statement that it is a “platform for boat owners and boat renters to meet each other and engage directly on rental terms and conditions, requirements and coordination.”
Fees waived for first 100 pet adoptions at San Diego Humane Society locations through Sunday
Things to do this weekend: Memorial Day weekend, Santee Street Fair and Craft Beer Festival and more
“Getmyboat strongly encourages safety and compliance verification for owners and renters meeting on its site,” the statement reads in part. “Each boat owner renting their boat through Getmyboat confirms the responsibility for compliance of their vessel in their jurisdiction.”
Kurtz said renting without requiring those verifications poses a risk on the water and presents a challenge for law enforcement.
“It's Whac-a-Mole,” Kurtz said. “They're hiding in plain sight. You can't stop them if there's a million of them out there," adding, "we're trying to cut off the top of the funnel so there's less of these things out there, which makes their enforcement easier."
San Diego Police and San Diego Lifeguards impounded 185 vessels in 2023, officials said, up from 119 the year before but down from the 230 impounded in 2021.
The city advises renters to use brick-and-mortar businesses, with safety top of mind after a 12-year-old paddleboarder was hit by a jet ski and killed on Mission Bay last summer.
There’s a hearing on Kurtz’s lawsuit in October, but he said time is of the essence as the summer boating season kicks off.
“It's your safety, right?” Kurtz said. “It's absolutely the safety of the person that is ... out there on the water. That's what's most important.”

Bathroom breaks are easy – just pop into the VanAndel Beach House. Changing rooms are available as well.

Millennium Park Playgrounds
Millennium Park is one of over 85 playgrounds in west Michigan .
There are three different playground sections at this park, one for the younger kids, one for the older kids, and one ninja warrior course.
Traditional Playgrounds
The playgrounds are outside of the fenced-off beach area and have a nice grassy area nearby.
They feature swings, slides, a rock wall, and climbing elements.
The surface is covered with woodchips,
Also nearby: the picnic shelters (these are often reserved by groups ahead of time).
The playground has a special area just for 2 – 5 year olds.
Ninja Warrior Playground
Kids and families that like to watch American Ninja Warrior on television will love testing their mettle on the newer play equipment at Millennium Park.
Multiple obstacles and structures comprise the playground, which is geared toward older kids.
This design is the first in the USA and Millennium Park is excited to debut it here right in Grand Rapids.
Fishing at Millennium Park Grand Rapids
Fishing from the observation and fishing decks at Millennium Park makes accessing the water a breeze.
There are a few places in the park where fishing is not allowed , but overall there are numerous places to cast a line.
Hint: You don’t have to fish in the busy parts of the park. There are multiple lakes to fish from. Try walking to the little deck between two lakes on the other side of Millennium Park and casting there for a bit.
Some people rent a paddle boat and fish from that.
Millennium Park Trails
Bring that stroller, you parents of tiny humans! Finally, a trail that is primarily stroller-friendly.
Millennium Park in Walker offers a whopping 18 miles of interconnected trails. Most of these trails are paved, but there are some off-shoot trails that are natural surfaces.
This detailed trail map notes which trails are paved or natural surface.
In addition to being stroller-friendly, you can also take a bike, scooter, or any human-powered device on the trails.
The Orange and Purple loops and part of the Hansen Nature Trail offer views of beautiful wetlands and the recreational lake. It also has two boardwalks kids will love.
The trails are mostly sunny, with some shade on the Hansen Nature Trail. You’ll want to apply sunscreen and bug spray before you hike during the summer months.
The trails can be busy with bikers, joggers, and hikers. If you have toddlers prone to wandering, be mindful, and keep them close.
The trails are well-maintained and easy to navigate. With many options of loops and lengths, you can easily cater to your family’s needs.
There are many parking options located along the trails.
The map offers specific addresses to input into your GPS if you want to start somewhere other than the main park complex. Seasonal public restrooms are located by the Kent Trails North Trailhead.
