- So you're interested in the field of resource conservation?
- Or maybe you're interested in parks and outdoor recreation?
- Or what about conservation enforcement?
Ask Yourself These Questions
- Do you believe it's important to conserve and protect Mississippi's wildlife and aquatic life?
- Do you like dealing with people, one-on-one and in groups?
- Do you enjoy helping people have a safe and enjoyable time in the outdoors?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then you've made an important first step just by viewing this site.
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks offers a variety of career opportunities. All are dedicated to, or support, the conservation of Mississippi's natural resources and the enhancement of outdoor recreation. These jobs require varied levels of education and experience. Some of the career opportunities available include, but are not limited to:
Thinking of entering the field of resource management and outdoor recreation? There's no way to find out if it's right for you until you try it. There are some summer jobs available for persons over 16. People taking these jobs will receive training not taught in classrooms, and the MDWFP considers on-the-job training to be a valuable asset.
Seasonal general service job opportunities are available, primarily through the parks system. Anyone seeking these positions should apply directly to the park where employment is sought.
Education There are more than 100 varied positions in the MDWFP across the state. It should be noted that some career opportunities are limited unless education requirements are met. Most positions require a high school diploma or GED. Many require a college degree or specialized degree.
When To Choose A Career Career ideas begin to take shape early in life. If you are a junior high, high school or college student, begin now to decide what you plan to do as your life's work. Find what interests you and learn as much as possible about what the actual work involves. Discuss your plans for a career with your school counselor and make sure you are taking the courses that will benefit you. Whether you decide to pursue a career with the MDWFP or in some other field, education is always an advantage.
Career Options Careers in the MDWFP are in the following fields: Wildlife and fisheries management and research, Museum of Natural Science, conservation enforcement, support services, parks and recreation, public information, marketing and education. Each provides unique career opportunities.
Wildlife and Fisheries Management Management and monitoring of Mississippi's wildlife and fisheries resources are important tasks in ensuring that future generations will continue to enjoy our valuable natural resources. The men and women who work in this field conduct research and surveys and manage land and timber, construct and maintain boat launching ramps and fishing piers on public lakes and streams, and oversee hunting and fishing on public areas. Job opportunities in this area include research and management biologists, technicians, managers for the agency's wildlife management areas, fish hatcheries, state and park lakes, land and timber managers, and construction crews.
Museum of Natural Science The Museum of Natural Science serves as an educational outreach for the department, reaching school children, their teachers and others throughout the state. The museum also serves as headquarters for the department's non-game and endangered species research.
The museum houses more than 250,000 specimen collections, including birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, mollusks and fish.
At the museum, a person may find such career opportunities as exhibits specialist, aquarium keeper, conservationist, biologist, educator and librarian.
Conservation Enforcement The men and women who work in this field are probably the most visible of all MDWFP employees. Conservation officers, of course, help ensure compliance with the state's game and fish laws, but that is just a part of their job. They also serve as public relations representatives and teachers in the field because they have direct contact with hunters, fishermen and other outdoor participants and field observers.
Included in this field are the MDWFP hunting and boating safety programs. Employees in the hunter safety program are responsible for educating people on the ethical use of the outdoors, game and fish laws, firearms safety and woodsmanship.
Employees in the boater education program instruct people on the safe handling of boats, laws and regulations pertaining to use of public waters and boating ethics.
Support Services This field represents the nuts-and-bolts area of support operations in MDWFP. Employees in this field provide important logistical support for all the department's programs. This division enables employees in other areas to concentrate their efforts on their respective goals.
In support services, you will find accountants, personnel specialists, fleet managers, secretaries, licensing and boat registration personnel, clerks, property officers, planners, computer specialists, purchasing agents and warehouse personnel.
Parks and Recreation Careers in this field are dedicated to providing safe, family-oriented outdoor recreational and educational experiences to Mississippi's residents and visitors to our beautiful state parks.
In this field, a person may find career opportunities in park management, construction, skilled crafts, maintenance, park security, food service, historical interpretation and housekeeping.
Public Information and Marketing People who pursue this field will find themselves serving as the communications link between the MDWFP and the public.
This field is dedicated to projecting the department's image, informing the public about department activities and keeping people up to date on laws and regulations.
MDWFP public relations employees compose news releases, write and edit magazines and newsletters, produce videos and television programs, answer inquires from the public, participate in promotional trade shows and operate the agency's print shop.
Career opportunities in this field include writers, editors, photographers, videographers, video producers, graphic artists and press operators.
For Detailed Information The qualifications for positions with the MDWFP are detailed in job descriptions available through the State Personnel Board and local state Employment Service offices.
Additionally, the MDWFP has publications outlining general qualifications for some wildlife and fisheries jobs. These may be obtained by Writing:

Barge Strikes Iowa Bridge Over Mississippi
Work to raise a sunken barge continued May 15, nearly a week after a tow struck the Fort Madison, Iowa, bridge over the Mississippi River on May 9.
The mv. Joe B. Wyatt, owned and operated by Ingram Barge Company, had 15 barges in tow when one hit the north side of the bridge about 1:15 p.m., said Petty Officer Jose Hernandez, a public affairs specialist for the Coast Guard’s Eighth District. One barge sank. No one was injured.
The swing gate bridge was temporarily stuck in the open position as a result, halting rail and highway traffic for the next few hours. The waterway was closed in the immediate area from about 5 p.m. until midnight to allow a complete inspection. The bridge is located at Upper Mississippi Mile 383.
The bridge connects Fort Madison with Niota, Ill. It carries two lanes of highway traffic on Illinois State Route 9/Iowa Highway 2 on its upper deck and rail traffic along two tracks owned by BNSF Railway line on the lower deck.
“The bridge is now back open, and traffic is moving,” said Lena Kent, a spokeswoman for BNSF Railway. “The cause is under investigation.”
Hernandez said the barges in the tow were carrying corn, and there were no environmental impacts as a result of the allision.
The 1,675-foot bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places. It opened in 1927, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. At the time its 525-foot electrified swing span—which allows river traffic to pass through—was the longest and heaviest in the country.

Where is the Delaware River deepest? New map poster shows 113-foot answer
Where is the deepest part of the 330-mile Delaware River? Where it is also widest, where the river meets the Delaware Bay? Try Narrowsburg, New York. A new map has been published showing the mysterious contours of what is called the “Big Eddy Narrows.”
The river, the longest free-flowing river east of the Mississippi, is 113 feet deep at River Mile 290, counting from Delaware Bay, and visible from the bridge connecting Pennsylvania and New York.
The Delaware River’s average depth is only four to five feet, although holes of 12 to 18 feet are not unusual.
A diver with a local search and rescue team said no light penetrates the bottom at all.
Made a map poster
The map is available as an 11-by-17-inch poster that its creator has donated to benefit the non-profit Upper Delaware Council (UDC), announced UDC Executive Director Laurie Ramie.
The map was developed by Lisa Glover of Honesdale, who became enthralled with this unique, local claim to fame of the Delaware River and contacted the UDC.
Although one might muse that the hamlet of Narrowsburg should have been named Deepestburg, its name is derived from its other distinction of being the main stem’s narrowest part. The river courses through a rock canyon before the bridge, where it is only 200 feet wide.
Where to see it
The Big Eddy Observation Deck on Main Street in Narrowsburg has an interpretative sign telling these distinctive topographic features. Here the public also finds a good place to watch for bald eagles as rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and rafts go by.
Perhaps very few people paddling by or on shore looking at this scenic part of the river are aware of the fantastic underwater depth.
This very deep part of the Delaware also is easily seen from the Darbytown Access on the Pennsylvania side.
The interpretative sign at the deck offers two theories of how the 113-foot hole was created. The first is that a long-drowned "plunge pool" was created from a glacial waterfall. The other theory is that a pothole was formed by tumbling rocks scoured out through erosion.
A whirlpool is often visible at the Big Eddy, where the deepest point is located just downstream from the narrows.
Log rafts spun like tops
The deeps at Narrowsburg have been known for a very long time, impacting 19th century log rafters. The Wayne County Herald's Feb. 20, 1873, edition reported that J.I. Appleby and J.E. Miller, of Narrowsburg, out of curiosity took soundings of the river from a boat. They concluded the river was 101 feet. "Rafts in coming down the Delaware are frequently drawn into this eddy and sometimes detained for days," the article reads. "Whenever the wind is blowing with any force, rafts are sure to be drawn into this eddy where they have to remain until the wind calms."
The Herald republished an unattributed column from The Middletown Mercury on Jan. 20, 1881, stating that log rafts caught in the Big Eddy "may spin around like a top for an hour." Rafts so caught could create a river traffic jam of a hundred rafts. "I have seen 500 rafts in here at one time, some of them on top of each other, and some turned up on edge, and others bottom side up," the columnist penned.
Extensive research
The UDC press release states that Glover read articles from the UDC’s “The Upper Delaware” newsletter which led her to interviews with National Park Service divers who had measured the hole. Glover also found various illustrations.
She spoke of her desire for an accurately detailed map of the river bottom with the hope of potentially solving the mystery. Although topographic maps exist showing the elevation of landforms above “sea level,” bathymetric maps show depths of landforms below water.
Glover, in her research, discovered that the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) had published a LiDAR scan of the Delaware River in 2020 and reached research scientist John Young, who provided a digital map focused on the Big Eddy section, the press release states.
Obtaining a map
From her research, Glover designed a topobathymetric color map with 10-foot contour lines and to-scale cross sections of The Narrows and The Deeps, printed 50 copies, and offered a stack to the UDC to share with the public as a fundraiser.
The Big Eddy Narrows poster is available for a $20 donation to the UDC.
Contact Administrative Support Stephanie Driscoll at [email protected] or 845-252-3022, or stop by the UDC’s office at 211 Bridge St. in Narrowsburg (next to the firehouse) on weekdays for pick-up.
Payment must be by check or cash. Add $3 for mail orders.
Glover is affiliated with Highlights for Children, the Stourbridge Project, the Wayne County Arts Alliance and the Center on Rural Innovation, for which she is their Placemaking Fellow.
She holds a bachelor's degree in architecture and a master of engineering degree from Lehigh University and likes to use a paddle board. Her website is lisathemaker.com .
Peter Becker has worked at the Tri-County Independent or its predecessor publications since 1994. Reach him at [email protected] or 570-253-3055 ext. 1588.
