The retiring Kimi Räikkönen once left the Monaco Grand Prix to drink beers in the hot tub of his private yacht

  • Kimi Räikkönen is retiring at the end of the F1 season, 20 years after making his debut.
  • Known as the Iceman, he once retired from the Monaco Grand Prix to sit in the hot tub of his yacht.
  • Räikkönen was pictured by TV cameras with his shirt off whilst the race was still going on.

Insider Today

F1's most experienced driver in the sport's history is retiring at the end of the season.

Alfa Romeo's Kimi Räikkönen announced Wednesday via Instagram that he was stepping away from the sport he has competed in since 2001.

"This is it. This will be my last season in Formula 1. This is a decision I made last winter. It was not an easy decision but after this season it is time for new things.

"Even though the season is still on, I want to thank my family, all my teams, everyone involved in my racing career and especially all of you great fans that have been rooting for me all this time.

"Formula 1 might come to an end for me but there is a lot more in life that I want to experience and enjoy. See you around after all of this! Sincerely Kimi," he said.

The Finnish driver was known for his quiet nature and his willingness to do what he wanted, when he wanted.

One particular moment that defined the character trait came in 2006 at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Driving for McLaren, his heat shield caught fire and he was forced to retire from the race. Instead of returning to his team's garage in the pits, Räikkönen headed for his private yacht which was docked nearby.

As his rivals continued to race, the TV feed cut to Räikkönen sitting in the boat's hot tub with his shirt off and drinking a beer.

Räikkönen is also the last Ferrari driver to win the world championship having beaten Lewis Hamilton by a single point in the driver's standings in 2007.

Kimi Raikonnen Once Retired From The Monaco GP & Walked Straight To His Yacht

Boss Hunting

Kimi Raikonnen – the Iceman himself – has long been known as both the most enigmatic and straight-shooting character in Formula 1.

From telling his race engineer mid-race “ Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing ” to justifying why he missed a speech by Pele with “ I was having a shit “, it’s pretty clear the Flying Finn does and says just about whatever he wants. Which is why the footage of Kimi Raikonnen retiring at the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix is the furthest thing from surprising.

In his time in F1, Kimi Raikkonen has amassed a fortune driving for teams such as McLaren, Ferrari, Lotus, and Alfa Romeo. He has made several splurges from his net worth of $250 million, but the most attractive one yet has to be his yacht.

The Finnish driver bought a 33-meter Sunseeker Predator 108 in late 2008. Raikkonen’s ‘new toy,’ reportedly cost him $10 million, can be seen in the harbors of Monaco and Adriatic coastlines.

How Kimi Raikkonen earned his boat the name ‘one more toy’ in 2006

Before he bought a second yacht in 2008, he was involved in a famous incident with his first one at the 2006 Monaco GP. Raikkonen was having a fairly average season; his McLaren was accustomed to mechanical issues and reliability the entire season.

But then, at the 2006 Monaco GP, the Finnish driver made a blinding start and passed his rivals to move to P2. Unfortunately, he was hit by mechanical issues once again.

Kimi had had enough of this, so he parked his car at the Saint Devout corner and started walking through the tunnel. Everyone assumed that the driver was going back to his garage. But Raikkonen surprised everyone when he went straight to his yacht.

He joined his friends on the boat and partied his worries away. ” There is Kimi Raikkonen. He has not even got back to his paddock. He has got his shirt off, he’s on his boat which has a splendid name ‘one more toy’. Kimi’s with some of his best mates from Finland who have consumed their own weight in champagne and beer,” said the commentator.

It was reported at the time that he paid about 3.5m euros for a new 22-meter yacht.

Watch: epic kimi räikkönen – going straight to his yacht after heat shield blow up | 2006 monaco gp . epic kimi heads for his yacht after retiring ..

Halfway through the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix, a mechanical failure forced Kimi to park up his McLaren at the exit of the Portier turn. Fortunately for him, this was close to his private yacht. He had a choice. Walk all the way back to the garage for a chat with Ron Dennis, or get into his shorts and sit and watch the race on his boat with a cold beer and some bikini clad beauties. Well, what would YOU do?

11 things you didn't know about Kimi Räikkönen

By Paul Henderson

There are tough jobs, impossible jobs, and then there is the job of trying to write Kimi Räikkönen 's biography. However, award-winning Finnish author Kari Hotakainen has managed it, producing a fascinating insight into one of the most enigmatic and monosyllabic drivers in Formula 1 history. Here are some of the fascinating facts we uncovered about Kimi...

1. He can sing (if well lubricated)

One of Kimi’s favourite songs is “Paalupaikka” (translation: “Pole Position”) by Kari Tapio. It is also Kimi’s karaoke jam.

2. You don't want to lie to him

Kimi is notoriously bad for not taking advice, preferring to do his own thing. However, he does listen to Sami Visa, who is his affairs manager. Kimi trusts Sami because he is a straight talker who doesn’t mince his words. When they agreed their verbal contract, Kimi told him, “If you bullshit me, I’ll kill you.”

3. Speaking doesn't come easy...

On the rare occasions when Kimi speaks, his voice sounds low, deep and slightly gravelly. This is because when he was five he fell off his bike and hit his throat on the handlebar, damaging his vocal chords irreparably.

4. Neither does reading

Kimi suffers from dyslexia , inherited from his mother.

5. Signing Kimi to McLaren cost Ron Dennis a wind tunnel

Kimi was so quick in his first F1 season with Sauber that McLaren wanted to buy him out of his contract early. Peter Sauber was reluctant, but Ron Dennis insisted… the price was agreed: Sauber would get some new trucks and a state-of-the-art wind tunnel for testing. McLaren got Kimi. And it was Dennis who gave Kimi his nickname: “Iceman” (also the name of Kimi’s Sunseeker yacht. See No7).

6. He likes to smoke

“I smoked for a couple of years when I was a kid, but I haven’t smoked habitually during my career. Except I’ve gone through quite a few fags when pissed, and I’ve been pissed pretty often.”

7. And drink (OK, you probably knew that one)

“I’ve got to say that I’ve drunk a hell of a lot considering that I’m a racing driver. I must have drunk on behalf of all of them many times over.”

8. And take snuff

Yes, really.

9. He is also a romantic

This is how he describes meeting his wife, Minttu: “I can’t really say what single thing is at the bottom of the attraction. We’ve always liked each other and found it easy to talk. And, of course, she’s pleasing to the eye. When I first saw Minttu, she wore tight denim shorts. I said, ‘Some arse .’ It became a standing joke and I still use that expression, made into one word: somearse.”

10. If he's gotta go, he'll go

He has been known to urinate in his Ferrari overalls, but he doesn’t make a habit of it. “Nothing major has ever got inside the race suit. But I’ve sometimes peed in qualifying after waiting for an hour in the car… And because the race suit is Ferrari red, no one really notices. I haven’t had diarrhoea during a race.”

11. He won't look back

When he does retire, he won’t have any regrets: “It won’t be hard for me to quit this job. I’ll be relieved when the travelling and shit-mongering comes to an end. Driving is great… unlike all the rest that goes with it.”

Oct 08,2020

Thank you very much Mr. Soh, you are so kind to say so many good things about us, Rizal and Rehim miss you and your friends too. Hope to see you very soon

This is our second trip on No Name 2 on 11 Jan 2020 for my son's 21th Birthday celebration. We booked 8 hours on that day, it really is a wonderful experience, we play mahjong, sing karaoke, take a speed boat ride , jet ski, and all the water toys. 8 hours seems not enough. Mr. Ang and his crews all are very nice and helpful, will definitely come back for our third trip.

Feb 12,2020

This is our second trip on board No Name 2 on 7 Jan 2020 within a month, we are a bunch of yachting enthusiast , we been to quite a few yachts in Singapore. Our first experience with No Name 2 is accidental, the one we actually booked on that day was down and the skipper introduce us to No Name 2 as a replacement. We had some misunderstanding in the beginning, the captain of No Name 2,Mr. Ang, is very firm on his house rules, and their rules is quite a few more than other yachts, but after the first trip we decided to stick with No Name 2 from then onward, that is the reason we booked with them directly on this trip. Our advise to others is , if you are looking for a free for all party kind of yacht( so called cowboy yacht) don't book No Name yachts, but if you looking for a very clean, well maintain( Like new although No Name 2 is 18 months old), high standard of service then you are safe to go with No Name 2.

“Your Name” Movie Real-life Location Tour

Natural beauty and local gourmet in Suwa, Nagano

Makoto Shinkai, director of the popular anime movie “Your Name” (Kimi no Na Wa), drew inspiration from the landscapes of his childhood in Nagano Prefecture. One of the most iconic scenes from the village portrayed in the movie was influenced by the Lake Suwa surroundings in central Nagano. There are plenty of attractions and foods in the area as well worth checking out on a day trip or weekend visit from Tokyo.

For the best views of the surrounding area, Tateishi Park offers a grand, panoramic perspective Lake Suwa where visitors can overlook the urban landscape and the Northern Alps. The views here will be very reminiscent for anyone who remembers the movie.

Another great way to take in the lake views is to stay at one of the overlooking hotels. Hotel Beniya provides a spectacular view of Lake Suwa from the panorama baths, equipped with stone sauna and a relaxation sky lounge. The restaurant serves a wide range of Japanese cuisine including kaiseki ryori, a set menu of high-quality food served on an individual tray including appetizers, soup, side dishes, sashimi, main dish and desserts. The menu focuses on specially selected local mountain ingredients. Guests will certainly enjoy the warm hospitality and great food with the seasonal flavors of Nagano while taking in the views.

The hotel provides a buffet-style breakfast that also serves local specialties. You can choose from a classic breakfast with sausages and scrambled eggs or the traditional Japanese-style breakfast with tamagoyaki (rolled egg), rice ball, shinshu miso soup and highland vegetables.

The hotel restaurant also has a special menu for dinner, “suwa goko drinking set” which allows guests to taste and compare alcohol from five breweries from the local Koshukaido area.

Additionally, guests are able to sample award-winning Masumi Sake for only 320 yen. This price includes a shot glass of up to seven different sake varieties. The Masumi Sake Brewery was established in 1662 and is one of the finest breweries in Japan; the Masumi label has been recognized by various Sake appraisal awards in both national and international categories. Their original superior sake yeast “Kyokai No. 7” is used to this day by over 60% of the sake brewers in Japan. Feel free to contact them by email in foreign languages as they have staff who are able to communicate in English, Chinese and French.

There are many things to do in Suwa other than sightseeing at the lake. Over 10,000 Suwa shrines across Japan are connected to the local Suwa Taisha (Suwa Grand Shrine). Suwa Taisha is made up of 4 complexes, each with unique layouts and atmospheres. Every 6 years, “Onbashira”, the “Great Pillars Festival”, is held. During this festival, participants haul giant pillars using manual labor down the mountains and erect them in the four corners of the Shrine. The next Onbashira Festival will take place in 2022. This event can be somewhat dangerous for the locals who participate, but remains an attractive and unique experience and is certainly safe for viewers.

Nearby Suwa Taisha, a shop selling kanten (agar) products directly from their factory can be found. A tasting section allows you to try the agar alongside different sauces. The store also creates innovative recipes incorporating agar into daily meals.

Tocoro Terrace Café offers other Kanten-derived delicacies. Inside, a gallery displays the agar-processing machine and informative videos about agar. Kanten is a low-calorie food rich in dietary fiber, good for beauty and health. It is said that Suwa produces the highest amount of agar in Japan due to its climate. In winter, the low temperature allows agar to freeze and dry naturally.

From January to June, Suwa Lake Strawberry Farm offers strawberry picking. In the 30-minute session, you can eat as many of the large, sweet strawberries as you can pick. During the opening period, approximately 45,000 strawberries are planted in five houses. Two types of strawberries can be found there: the sweeter “Akihime” variety and variety and the “Sachinoka” strawberry, which has a combined sweet and sour taste with high levels of vitamin C. For more information on how to make a reservation, please visit their homepage .

Suwa Garasu-no-Sato (Glass Museum) is one of Japan’s largest glass shops, also serving as an art museum that exhibits many glass works from artisans local and around the world. The workshop also offers guests the experience of sandblasting, designing and creating glass candles, beads and seals.

For those are fond of historic locations, Takeshima Castle, the “Floating Castle of Suwa”, is a worthy visit; it is one of three major lake castles in Japan. Originally built on a peninsula extending into Lake Suwa during the Edo period, the castle is a reminder of the past and many of the castle’s structures were reconstructed about 50 years ago.

Last but not least, Clasuwa gathers Nagano specialities in a multi-story building. A souvenir shop on the ground floor displays traditional crafts and a range of food, such as sake, snacks, pickles, etc. A high-quality restaurant stands upstairs with a stylish and comfortable interior, offering the option of dining on the rooftop terrace overlooking Lake Suwa.

For additional information on the vast experiences Suwa has to offer, please visit the following websites

Man accused of driving boat that killed girl had 'no knowledge' of accident, lawyer says

Authorities in South Florida have identified the person driving a boat in the hit-and-run death of 15-year-old girl over the weekend.

Carlos Guillermo Alonso, 78, of Coral Gables was piloting a 42-foot Boston Whaler in Key Biscayne when officials say his boat struck Ella Riley Adler , according to a Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission incident report obtained by The Palm Beach Post , part of the USA TODAY NETWORK.

According to the report, the girl was wakeboarding and fell into the water before she was struck by Alonso's vessel.

The man driving the boat left the scene without stopping, witnesses told the agency. Ella was retrieved by the other boat but died of her injuries, according to the report.

Here's what we know so far about the fatal hit-and-run boating incident:

Texas power outage map: Severe storms leave nearly 800,000 homes, businesses without power

When was Ella Adler struck by a boat?

According to new information released in the report, Ella was struck wakeboarding in waters off Key Biscayne on Saturday afternoon.

Initial reports from the FWC indicated the girl had been waterskiing.

The agency reported Ella fell in the ocean  near Nixon Beach  while being towed about a mile from shore and was struck by another vessel at 4:30 p.m.

The beach is in Miami-Dade County about 7 miles south of downtown Miami.

Ella was wakeboarding behind a 42-foot 2017 Hanse Fjord yacht near a sandbar at the same time as another unidentified female on a wake surfboard rode, officers wrote in the report.

Ella and the other female being towed fell into the water at different times and locations.

While waiting to be recovered by her boat, another vessel struck her and fled the scene, officials said. A witness said the boat did not appear to swerve or slow down when it hit the girl.

Ella, who wore a life jacket, died from her injuries.

Who is Carlos Guillermo Alonso?

Alonso is 78 and lives in Coral Gables . The city is about 5 miles from downtown Miami. According to his attorney, Lauren Krasnoff, her client goes by the name Bill.

Investigators said it was unclear if Alonso knew Ella was hit or whether alcohol was a factor.

Krasnoff told USA TODAY on Friday Alonso does not drink and did not know he struck anyone on the water.

Here is a statement in full released to USA TODAY from his attorney:

"This is the worst possible tragedy and before saying anything else, we want to express our deepest sympathies to Ella Adler’s family and friends.

There have been numerous requests for Carlos Alonso, who goes by “Bill,” to make a statement. Because this is an ongoing investigation with which he is fully cooperating, he will not be making any statements to the media other than to say that he was beyond devastated to learn that he may have been involved in this awful tragedy.

I will tell you that Bill, who has been boating for 50 years and is a very experienced boater who knows these waters, was out boating by himself on Saturday. He has no knowledge whatsoever of having been involved in this accident. If he hit Ella that day, he certainly did not know it. Had Bill thought he hit anything, he absolutely would have stopped. But he did not at any point think that he had hit anything, let alone a person. He docked his boat in plain sight right behind his house. When Fish and Wildlife contacted Bill on Sunday, he did not know why they were reaching out to him. He did not even know there was an accident on the water the day before, but immediately met with law enforcement, spoke to them without a lawyer, and has been cooperating with law enforcement eversince.

Bill is 78 years old and came to the United States from Cuba in operation Peter Pan. He has never had any contact with the criminal justice system. He does not drink and was not drinking on Saturday, May 11, and he was driving his boat safely at a reasonable rate of speed.

Bill is a good man and he is absolutely devastated by the loss of this intelligent, accomplished and beautiful young woman. He has cooperated 100% with law enforcement and will continue to do so. As I said, this is an ongoing investigation. So we will have no further comment at this time."

The FWC reported Alonso's vessel was in custody on Tuesday and Alonso was cooperating with the investigation.

Has anyone been arrested in Ella Adler's death?

Officials did not say whether Alonso was facing charges in connection to the fatal hit-and-run.

They also did not say what day they located the suspect vessel.

Golfer arrested: Scottie Scheffler handcuffed by police before start of Round 2 of the PGA Championship

Who was Ella Adler?

Ella, a ballerina, lived in Miami Beach, officials said, and attended  Ransom Everglades High School  in Miami.

"She was a force of nature, and when she was near, everyone felt a gravitational pull toward her," her obituary reads. "She loved to dance, she loved her friends, and most of all she loved her family."

She is the granddaughter of Michael Adler, the current  U.S. Ambassador to Belgium , according to the  Miami Herald .

She is survived by her parents, Amanda and Matthew Adler, and her younger siblings Jaden and Adalynn, and many other relatives.

Reward being offered in Ella Adler's hit-and-run boating death

A $20,000 reward − $10,000 from Ella's family and a combined $10,000 from FWC and Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers − is being offered for information in the case.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact those agencies.

AP breaks news on Boy Scouts’ historic name change

Selby Chipman, 20-year-old, speaks at the Boys Scouts of America annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., Tuesday, May 7, 2024. By Jamie Stengle, Kendria LaFleur and Tony Gutierrez

Years of authoritative coverage on the Boy Scouts of America paid off with a scoop on the group’s decision to rebrand to Scouting America. The Boy Scouts of America spent most of its 114-history proudly resistant to change. How Dallas reporter Jamie Stengle, video journalist Kendria LaFleur and photojournalist Tony Gutierrez were first across all formats with a major one — a rebrand to Scouting America —was no accident and put AP far ahead on one of the week’s biggest talkers. For more than a decade, AP has chronicled the rapid shifts and woes within the Boy Scouts, from revoking a ban on gay youths to bankruptcy. The authoritative coverage paid off when Stengle, who has previously covered the Texas-based organization, received a call from its headquarters: the Boy Scouts would change their name in 2025 in a switch aimed at inclusion. The news would not be publicly announced until the next week at the Boys Scouts’ national convention in Florida. The Texas team used that head start to own the story, including LaFleur shooting the first on-camera interview with Boy Scouts president Roger Krone about the change. In addition to the mainbar, Stengle also put together a glance of the tumult and shake-ups within the scouts, drawing on years of expert AP reporting. The  coverage did not stop in Texas. Although the scouts were resistant to allowing press at their national convention in Orlando, Stengle was determined and secured access for a photographer, whose images of a female Eagle Scout’s remarks helped give AP a robust visual package that also included Gutierrez’s photos from Dallas.
