The Whitsundays

Glowing with beach-glamour and dripping in first-class hideaways, the group of islands known as the Whitsundays are both indulgently luxurious and stunningly beautiful.

Made up of 74 picture-perfect islands and bordered by the Great Barrier Reef, their brilliant seas and underwater delights are hard to resist.

Located just off the east coast of Queensland, Australia’s sunshine state, the Whitsunday Islands lie amongst the Coral Sea; rightly earning their place among the South Pacific’s most majestic island groups. National parks, coral cays and sublime beaches make up the majority of the landscape while wilderness retreats and hedonistic spas also have their place.

The Whitsundays are widely regarded as one of the true yachting pleasure grounds of the world with smooth waters, spectacular reefs and balmy rainforests that are just as amazing to gaze upon as they are to explore. Paired with superb deep water anchorages and five-star resorts, there is no surprise as to why this region continues to attract the yachting elite.

The region is excellent for both crewed and bareboat charters with its easy navigation, close proximity of the islands and a first-class combination of untouched natural sights and modern indulgences. Most yacht charters will often start at Hamilton Island where guests can fly in, or the small but lively boho town of Airlie Beach known as the gateway to the Whitsundays.

Both Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island boast world-class superyacht infrastructure and luxury amenities to act as a base for exploring the region. Coral Sea Marina Resort in Airlie Beach is a state-of-the-art superyacht marina driven by an owner with a strong passion and vision for the superyacht industry. Hamilton Island Marina places superyachts in the centre of the Whitsundays cruising grounds, and is very much a destination within a destination with an array of bars, restaurants throughout a phenomenal luxury resort.

Luxury Island Resorts

The Whitsundays are truly blessed with immersive luxury experience which take superyacht charters in the region to the next level. Only eight of the islands are inhabited, with the most popular being the exclusive Hayman, the water-sports mecca of Hamilton Island and the appropriately named family favourite Daydream Island. For something a little more off-beat, sail down the Cumberland Channel to visit the lesser-known islands of Goldsmith and Tinsmith in the Sir James Smith Group.

Hamilton Island is the largest of the islands and is easily accessible for superyachts due to its fantastic marina facilities. The Qualia Resort on Hamilton Island is one of Australia’s esteemed Luxury Lodges, and is in itself a reason to visit the Whitsundays. Hamilton Island is a hive of water-based activities and opulent spas, and even has its own golf course for those keen to play a round in this paradisiacal setting. This is a favoured destination for superyachts in the region, and is often a reason why guests tend to either extend their stay or find themselves returning promptly.

In Airlie Beach, Coral Sea Marina is also linked to its own luxury resort by the same name, which it merged with in 2019 to complete an all-encompassing offering for visiting yachts. Coral Sea Resort has benefitted from significant investment to provide an enticing array of indulgent facilities, backed by outstanding hospitality and a passionate team. Airlie Beach town itself is a vibrant base filled with an eclectic mix of bars, restaurants and shops, perfect or both short of long stays.

Beaches and Diving

Diving, snorkelling, whale watching, and fishing are all there to be enjoyed in the Whitsunday Islands and it’s not uncommon to come face-to-face with turtles, sea eagles and ospreys during your journey. The soft white-sand beaches are another of the region’s biggest draw cards; perhaps the most breath-taking sandy stretch is Whitehaven Beach, coined “Heaven on Earth” by locals.

One of the most famous dive and snorkel sites in the Whitsundays is Heart Reef. This stunning coral has been aptly named after its natural formation into a heart shape, and sits in its own mesmerising reef lagoon. Throughout the Whitsundays, there are opportunities for divers and snorkelers of all levels to enjoy the wonders and colours of the reef. Gary’s Lagoon and Manta Ray Bay are both exceptional novice dive sites with abundant coral, while sites such as the Stepping Stones offer more advanced diving opportunities. Found in Bait Reef, the Stepping Stones are a unique diving experience made up of 18 flat-topped coral pinnacles lined up in a row, each rising from a depth of 15-25 metres up to one metre below the surface.

The Ackinclose Family

This was the holiday of a lifetime. When we returned, we immediately got off the boat and walked straight into the office to book again for the following year.

We had an absolute blast. And really the boat was the centre piece of that. It was everything we could have asked for; spacious, luxurious, comfortable, plenty of water storage and fridge/freezer space, room to spread out, great cooking facilities, plenty of lounging areas and a hot shower and comfy bed at the end of every day.

Perhaps most importantly it allowed us to ‘choose our own adventure’! This holiday had it all…. turquoise waters, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, isolated beaches, white sand, incredible walks, beach combing, whales, dolphins, turtles, tropical fish, and some high sea adventures! It’s one thing to visit the Whitsundays, it’s another altogether to holiday ON the Whitsundays. Being on the water 24/7 is an experience unlike any other… it was pure joy!

We loved being on our own (the perfect covid safe holiday really!), enjoying each others company and everyday being an adventure. Not to mention relaxing and unwinding with the most amazing scenery and sunsets. This is a holiday you and your children will remember forever!

Throughout the charter the support from the ops team is first rate. Whether you want to know where the best place to overnight for the conditions, or if you need some advice about the boat, they will always go the extra mile to ensure you have the best holiday possible. Shoutout to Jordans mobile outboard repairs that paid us a quick visit in Stonehaven to help sort us out.

The absolute highlight for this trip was the time we had all of Whitehaven Beach entirely to ourselves for a few hours on a sunny afternoon. A magical moment that is unlikely to be repeated.

We’re already booked in for our next charter with Whitsunday Escape over Christmas and can’t wait to get back up there.

AURORA (26m/84ft) is a sophisticated superyacht built by the renowned Dutch shipyard, Moonen. Available for charter in Australia. This beauty has just emerged from a major refit and a total refresh. With new decks, new interior, and many technical updates AURORA is enjoying a new dawning. She is ready to welcome you aboard.

On deck, AURORA has an extraordinary variety of options for outside use. The hydraulic swim platform by day is a perfect launch for watersports or a touch of fishing and by night an option for romantic dinners. This additional 2.3 metres / 7.6 ft gives AURORA an overall length of 92 feet.  The aft deck offers a bar and dining for up to eight guests. Up front, the bow bathes in full sunlight and is perfect for sun lounging and a sunset cheese platter. The flybridge offers dining for eight guests, it also has a daybed, an additional sunpad, BBQ and a flybridge lounge that offers perfect viewing for sunset cruises.

Step inside AURORA’s bespoke interior and here you will find a collection of textures and materials collected from around the world. The saloon affords comfortable seating for up to eight guests, a bar, a 44 inch smart TV and a small library. Interior dining for up to eight guests with banquette seating, a fully equipped galley kitchen with wine fridge and swiss cooking appliances by ZUG. The day head has wallpaper designed by Jean Paul Gautier and amenities by Australian brand, Grown Alchemist. Once in the wheelhouse there are a series of seating options. Helm chairs and a banquette that allows access to discuss daily options with the Captain over an espresso coffee in the morning or a glass of wine by night.

ACCOMMODATION

The lower deck offers four superbly appointed cabins. A master that comprises of an ensuite, walk in robe, lounge and desk with make-up table. The VIP has a private ensuite. The port side twin and starboard double that can also be converted to a twin share an ensuite. Guest comfort is taken care of with air conditioning throughout the vessel. All bathrooms are well appointed with plush Turkish towels and amenities from Grown Alchemist.

It can cost anywhere from $3,500 to $15,000 to book a luxury yacht for one day.  This is just a rough estimate, as every vessel has its own special prices and inclusions. The smaller yachts and overnight catamarans are the most affordable, whereas the superyachts are the most expensive. But because there are so many yachts in the Whitsundays, competition is high and all vessels are reasonably priced. You'll always get what you pay for!

Here is a quick estimate of what luxury yacht charters may cost in the Whitsundays:

• Small yachts:  $3,500 on average for a full day charter
• Sailing tallships: $4,000 on average for a full day charter
• Catamarans: $10,000 on average for a 3-day charter ($3,300 per day)

Usually the price you pay for your luxury yacht charter is all-inclusive. We'll touch on inclusions later on, but the standard charter price often covers all your crew, fuel, activities, and food. The only exception for this is event charters . If you're hosting an event or celebration , sometimes you may have to pay for extra staff and catering packages. Also if you're hiring a superyacht, sometimes there is an APA charge to cover extra costs.

The guest capacity for a luxury yacht charter depends on the size of the vessel. Though every vessel is different, most luxury yacht charters have similar inclusions.  First of all, a yacht charter always comes with an experienced crew . The number of crew members will depend on the size of the vessel, but there will usually be at least one captain/skipper and one host. The crew will tend to your every need so you can just relax and enjoy yourself on your charter!

Water toys are also included . Smaller yachts may only have a few popular toys such as kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkel gear. Massive superyachts may have jetskis, sea scooters, wakeboards, foil boards, and more. Meal and beverage packages are generally charter-specific, though most luxury yachts will work with you to curate your ideal menu. In addition to the crew, water sports, and food, you'll also get full use of the amenities on board. These may include a sound system, jacuzzi, sunbeds, hot showers, dining areas, and more.

One of the biggest perks of a private yacht charter is planning your own itinerary!  While an organised tour has a set itinerary, a private charter means you are the boss and you can choose where the boat goes for the day. Of course your skipper will advise where the best locations are based on the local weather and tides, but your happiness is the ultimate goal. You can do as much or as little as you like, depending on the length of your charter. 

Day charters may include a visit to Whitehaven Beach , where you can paddleboard, sunbathe, or hike to Hill Inlet Lookout.
