The Grand Soleil 42 LC is  Cantiere del Pardo ’s latest entry model of the bluewater line. Comfort and sailing autonomy are the main features of this 12-meter, designed by Marco Lostuzzi together with Nauta Design and Cantiere del Pardo’s Technical Office.

The 42 LC is available in two versions; standard or sport. The former is equipped with aft benches, and a carbon arch over the cockpit, designed to keep this area free of the mainsheet traveller. The GS 42 LC’s hull guarantees great stability thanks to greater hull volume. The well-proportioned sail plan optimizes the high-performance sailing standards. The Brittany based yard is well known not only among ocean sailors but also to those who love short-handed sailing and are looking for seaworthy and easily driven bluewater sailboats, both safe and comfortable. This last aspect is where Fora Marine has made great progress in the last few years, shedding some of the spartan image that characterized their products for many years.

What has not changed, and what is still the RM range’s defining characteristic, is the twin-chined hull, made of Okumé plywood impregnated with epoxy resin (the deck is in fiberglass sandwich). Below the hull, the yard offers two options, a single deep keel or double shoal draft keels. The RM are designed by Marc Lombard, probably one of the architects most able to transform the fashionable chine into an important element in cruising design. The Rustler 42 is a classic looking yacht which combines style that is traditional yet modern. Her cruising layout results in a live aboard yacht that has stability and elegance with the same unique sea-kindly characteristics as the Rustler 36. Below the waterline, she looks conservative with a deep canoe body, long fin keel and a big skeg hung rudder.

Below the decks, this yacht has a spacious open plan saloon. The large, finished saloon table can comfortably seat eight. The aft cabin has standing headroom, a full-width double berth and plenty of storage within lockers and a vanity unit with seat. Signed by  German Frers , the Swan 58 needs to combine the spaces of bluewater sailboats with a fast cruiser performances. Key details include a deck featuring soft and rounded shapes, a new cockpit design, a redefined coach-roof style and large swimming platform. The concept is easy: to give the maximum comfort and liveability at rest, together with maximum efficiency for short handed sailing, without losing the capability to race with a full crew. 

The interiors of the new Swan 58 , which is fitted with European oak, have been conceived as a combination between luxury and comfortable living spaces, storage and volumes for systems and safety features; we find here a large saloon, a galley with a 360 degree layout and three heads. Various interior styling layouts are available varying woods and materials.

Designed by Tartan naval architect Tim Jackett, the 395 comes out of the Tartan factory in Fairport Harbor and is the perfect example of bluewater sailboats. Her hull shape is an evolution of tried and true concepts proven to deliver great stability and high interior volume while maintaining comforting manners throughout a wide range of sailing conditions. On deck Tartan 395 sports hallmark Tartan design elements such as a traditional cabin house fitted with functional polished stainless steel rectangular portholes.

Thinking of heading off on a world-girdling cruise or just want to cross oceans in style? Here's the best bluewater cruisers of 2022 that will help you se off on a new life at sea

The results are in from the European Yacht of the Year Awards as the judges have announced their top four bluewater cruisers of 2022.

The European Yacht of the Year awards are well regarded as the definitive yacht awards in the world a variety of categories are judged by the panel from best luxury cruisers , to best family cruisers to performance yachts .

But for those looking to liveaboard their yacht, making plans to do some ocean crossings, or looking to undertake some long distance passage making, the best bluewater cruisers will likely be the category that draws the eye.

There were a brilliantly diverse and interesting collection of new designs for this category – a celebration of French ingenuity. For those planning long term cruising, would you choose a robust aluminium build for higher latitudes sailing, shoal draught to tuck into the shallows (a mix of both?), sustainable living or reliable comfort, or the ability to log sustained high speeds to outrun weather systems? This selection gives you all those choices and more.

The new flagship Allures 51.9, for example, is a no-nonsense adventure cruising design built and finished to a high standard. It retains Allures’ niche of using aluminium hulls with glassfibre decks and superstructures, which, the yard maintains, gives the optimum combination of least maintenance and less weight higher up. Priorities for this design were a full beam aft cabin and a spacious, long cockpit. Both are excellent, with the latter, at 6m long, offering formidable social, sailing and aft deck zones.

It likes some breeze to come to life on the wheel, but I appreciate that it’s designed to take up to five tonnes payload. And I like the ease with which you can change gears using the furling headsails and the positioning of the powerful Andersen winches inboard. The arch is standard and comes with a textile sprayhood or hard bimini.

Below decks you’ll find abundant headroom and natural light, a deep U-shape galley and cavernous stowage. For those who like the layout of the Amel 50 but would prefer aluminium or shoal draught, look no further.

Allures 51.9 price: €766,000

The Ovni 370 is another cunning new aluminum centreboard offering, a true deck saloon cruiser for two. The designers say the biggest challenge was to create a Category A ocean going yacht at this size with a lifting keel, hence the hull had to be very stable.

Enjoyable to helm, it has a practical, deep cockpit behind a large sprayhood, which can link to the bimini on the arch. Many of its most appealing features lie in the bright, light, contemporary, clever, voluminous interior, which has good stowage and tankage allocation. There’s also a practical navstation, a large workroom and a vast separate shower. I particularly like the convertible saloom, which can double as a large secure daybed or pilot berth.

Potentially the least expensive Category A lift keel boat available, the Ovni will get you dreaming of remote places again.

There’s no shortage of spirit in the Windelo 50. We gave this a sustainability award after it’s founders spent two years researching environmentally-friendly composite materials, developing an eco-composite of basalt fibre and recycled PET foam so it could build boats that halve the environmental impact of standard glassfibre yachts.

The Windelo 50 is an intriguing package – from the styling, modular interior and novel layout to the solar field on the roof and the standard electric propulsion, it is completely fresh.

Best bluewater cruiser of 2022 – Outremer 55

I would argue that this is the most successful new production yacht on the market. Well over 50 have already sold (an equipped model typically costs €1.6m) – and I can understand why. After all, were money no object, I had this design earmarked as the new yacht I would most likely choose for a world trip.

Indeed 55 number one Sanya, was fully equipped for a family’s world cruise, and left during our stay for the Grand Large Odyssey tour. Whereas we sailed Magic Kili, which was tricked up with performance options, including foam-cored deckheads and supports, carbon crossbeam and bulkheads, and synthetic rigging.

At rest, these are enticing space ships. Taking one out to sea is another matter though. These are speed machines with the size, scale and loads to be rightly weary of. Last month Nikki Henderson wrote a feature for us about how to manage a new breed of performance cruising cats just like this and how she coaches new owners. I could not think of wiser money spent for those who do not have ample multihull sailing experience.

Under sail, the most fun was obviously reserved for the reaching leg under asymmetric, where we clocked between 11-16 knots in 15-16 knots wind. But it was the stability and of those sustained low teen speeds which really hit home  – passagemaking where you really cover miles.

Key features include the swing helms, which give you views from outboard, over the coachroof or from a protected position in the cockpit through the coachroof windows, and the vast island in the galley, which is key to an open plan main living area. It helps provide cavernous stowage and acts as the heart of the entertaining space as it would in a modern home. As Danish judge Morten Brandt-Rasmussen comments: “Apart from being the TGV of ocean passages the boat offers the most spacious, open and best integration of the cockpit and salon areas in the market.”

Outremer has done a top job in packing in the creature comforts, stowage space and payload capacity, while keeping it light enough to eat miles. Although a lot to absorb and handle, the 55 offers a formidable blend of speed and luxury cruising.

In general, smaller blue water sailboats under 40 feet tend to be cutters , sloops or ketches . Catamarans and trimarans too are becoming increasingly popular as long cruising vessels, although these tend to be larger than 40 feet. In fact, while there are manufacturers producing some excellent, sturdy and compact blue water sailboats under 40 feet, they tend to be a minority and most ‘small’ sailboats designed for long-range cruising are usually above 50 feet.

So what other characteristics should you be looking for in a small ocean sailboat? 

Construction:

The material of the hull is probably the most crucial aspect, as it needs to be solidly built and able to withstand harsh seas as well as any collisions with floating objects. Hulls made from steel, strong fiberglass or carbon fiber tend to be the most popular. With a brand new sailboat you can be assured of a sound hull, however when buying a used sailboat under 40 feet the most important aspect is to ensure that the hull is strong and durable. 

The type of keel also makes a big difference, as deep V hulls with an encapsulated keel will make your boat less likely to capsize or lose its keel. Keel sailboats under 40 feet with skeg-hung rudders are considered the best small sailboats for open ocean cruising. While in the past it tended to only be monohull boats which were used for blue water sailing, there are now several manufacturers offering catamarans and trimarans which are strong enough to cross oceans. 

While the rig itself doesn’t necessarily denote whether a sailboat is more blue water worthy, it needs to be able to be manned by the number of crew on board as well as less crew if anyone is injured. The most important aspect is to think of the manageability of the rig. 

Ocean-going sailboats tend to have small cockpits to keep water out. While traditionally they used to have an aft cockpit there are more center cockpit blue water sailboats around these days. They need to have good drainage as well as offering the helmsman easy reach of the headsail, staysail and mainsail sheets.

Self-steering:

Whether you’re sailing solo or with a small crew, having the ability to set an auto-pilot is an important characteristic of a blue water boat. From tiredness to accidents or illness, there might come a time when you need to set the autopilot when under power or windvane when under sail. 

A compact cabin, galley and head with plenty of handholds and safe storage are vital to spending long stretches of time at sea. There needs to be enough space to ensure you are able to be self-sufficient for long periods of time. This includes everything from provisions to safety equipment , power systems, water makers, fuel storage and two anchors. 

Ability to heave-to:

The act of heaving-to involves pointing the bow into the wind and fixing the helm and sail positions. This essentially stops the boat in the water and is a hugely important maneuver during storms to prevent capsizing and allows the crew to take shelter inside. Some sailboats are more able to perform this than others. 

Having a way to communicate an emergency is vital, and your blue water sailboat should have a satellite phone and radio installed. A radio will allow you to connect with passing vessels, while the satellite phone is your only means of true contact with land. On deck, safety is paramount, and additions such as granny bars by the mast, safety rails and of course a harness mean you’ll be staying on board in lively conditions. 

Ability to Store or Make Water:

Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink is not a phrase any sailor wants to utter. So it’s imperative that your sailboat has enough storage capacity for long voyages, as well as the ability to make fresh water for drinking and washing in. Consider that two people on a three week voyage will require around 50 gallons of fresh water (allowing for a 20% contingency). Space – and weight considerations - is always a premium on small sailboats, so you need to make sure there are enough water tanks. You’ll also want a water maker which are powered by motors and generators. AC water makers can produce around 20 gallons a day, while DC water makers which use a lot less power, produce around 12 gallons of water a day.

Good Navigation Systems:

Ok, we’re going to say how important navigation systems are on your boat, and that’s true, but in fact you don’t want to reply on electronic navigation systems alone if you’re out in the middle of the deep blue. Having paper charts on board (in digital format preferably to save on space in a small boat) and knowing how to navigate using them is imperative.

There are thousands of models of liveaboard sailboats under 40 feet on the market, but certainly not all of them are suitable for crossing oceans. We’ve seen the general characteristics of what to look for when choosing a blue water sailboat, but what are the pros and cons of a smaller boat versus a larger model?

Affordability:

Smaller tends to mean cheaper and so affordability is a major factor when buying a blue water sailboat . Whether you’re in the market for a new or used blue water sailboat under 40 feet, there are some excellent deals to be found. It means that long-held dream of sailing across the world can happen now, rather than saving for years. The other bonus is that smaller, simpler pocket cruisers will be cheaper and easier to maintain. 

Easier to Sail:

The simpler the rig and the less systems on board the easier the boat will be to sail (and to care for). You’ll need a smaller crew meaning cruising boats under 40 feet tend to be popular with couples and solo sailors. 

Less Spacious:

It goes without saying that smaller boats have less space. While manufacturers are finding ever-more ingenious ways to equip small sailboats with everything their larger counterparts have – and there are some clever ways you can maximize storage space in a boat – realistically space will be at a premium, meaning the number of crew and the amount of comforts you can have on board will need to be minimal.

They Tend to be Slower:

As a general rule, the smaller the sailboat, the slower it will be. While this isn’t always a bad thing if you’re in no hurry to get anywhere, it’s worth considering that out-running bad weather can be trickier in a small boat. 

Less comfortable:

A smaller boat can make for a less comfortable ride, especially in bigger seas. 

Best blue water sailboat models under 40 Feet

If you’re in the market for a cruising sailboat under 40 feet the options can seem dizzying. With so many to choose from it’s hard to know where to start. There are thousands of excellent used boats on the market, with reputations for reliability, safety, comfort and build. Beneteau’s Oceanis 40, Oceanis 38.1 and Oceanis 34.1.

Beneteau’s reputation shines through in this smaller range of ocean-going yachts. At the top end of the under-40 foot range is the Oceanis 40 , with a hull designed by Marc Lombard and a huge amount of deck and interior space for its size. The Oceanis 38.1 offers surprising comfort and speed, with the ability to be sailed with a small crew, while the smallest in the range is the Oceanis 34.1 pocket cruiser, with cleverly designed spaces and a modern hull design.

Jeanneau’s Sun Odyssey 349 and Sun Odyssey 380:

For over 60 years Jeanneau has been crafting motor and sailboats which push the boundaries and the Sun Odyssey range is the perfect example of that. The Sun Odyssey 349 and Sun Odyssey 380 are the smallest in the range, offering high performance sailing you would expect of a much larger model. With an iconic inverted bow, huge interior spaces and fine-tuned handling, they are popular models for long distance cruising.

It’s uncommon to find blue water catamarans under 40 feet, but SeaWind has crafted no less than three compact, sturdy cats that can cross oceans in safety and comfort. Boater fatally strikes girl water-skiing in South Florida, flees scene, officials say

A boater struck and killed a girl while she was water-skiing in South Florida and reportedly fled the scene, according to authorities who on Monday were searching for the hit-and-run suspect.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) said about 4:30 p.m. on Saturday the girl was water-skiing near Nixon Beach in Key Biscayne when she was hit by a vessel.

The beach is in Miami-Dade County about 7 miles south of downtown Miami.

The driver fled the scene, the agency reported on social media.

Water-skier died after being struck by boat

The victim, officials reported, later died from injuries she suffered in the crash.

Officials did not release the girl's name or age.

Boat that killed water-skier described as light blue center console boat

The boat was last seen heading west from Nixon Beach, officials said.

The agency reported it responded to the scene to search for the suspect boat and driver but did not locate either.

Officers described it as a center console boat with a light blue hull with multiple white outboard motors and may have blue or dark blue bottom paint.

Anyone who witnessed the accident or has video footage or information about it is asked to call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC or Crime Stoppers.

The father of Ella Riley Adler, the 15-year-old ballerina killed in a hit-and-run boat crash in Miami , recalled in a heartbreaking letter read at the teen’s funeral that he and his wife always felt their daughter “got the best parts of both of us” — and that her death “robbed” her of all that she could have achieved in her life.

Matthew Adler’s letter was read in front of hundreds of mourners during a funeral service held Monday for his daughter, Ella, who was killed while celebrating a friend’s birthday at Key Biscayne’s Nixon Beach on Saturday when a boat collided with her and sped off.

“Mommy and I have said for years that you truly got the best parts of both of us,” the mourning father wrote in a letter read by one of the girl’s aunts, according to the Miami Herald.

“… You were taken from us way too soon, and the world has been robbed of all the things you could have achieved. But you will always be here with us and your friends and family will carry your energy and spirit forever.”

Pews inside Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach were packed Monday with those mourning Ella, a freshman at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove.

The teen was a member of the school’s dance team and a ballerina with the Miami City Ballet, where she was featured in over 100 productions of “The Nutcracker.”

During the service, Rabbi Jonathan Berkun of Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center urged mourners to remember Ella as the star she was.

“We must remember her as she would have wanted to be remembered, as a star, a force of nature, a glowing and gorgeous young woman who was loved, admired, cherished and adored by more people than anyone her age would normally be,” he said.

“To have known Ella her entire life, as I have been blessed, is to know just how wrong and unfair it is for us to have lost her so soon,” Berkun said. “Her death is enough to make us question our faith. … God did not do this. Rather, God is here crying bitter tears.”

  • Carlos Guillermo Alonso , 78, of Coral Gables, Florida, is accused of running over 15-year-old ballerina Ella Riley Adler in his 42-foot-long Boston Whaler last Saturday. Witnesses said he did not slow down or stop.
  • Following the deadly collision, Adler’s bloodied body was retrieved by the boat she had been wakeboarding from and her friends on board called for help, but she could not be saved.
  • “You were taken from us way too soon, and the world has been robbed of all the things you could have achieved,” grieving father Matthew Adler wrote in  an emotional letter that was read at the funeral. 
  • Alonso is cooperating with the investigation, and his  boat has been taken  to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission facility for investigators to examine for evidence, officials said.
  • The boater claims he “had absolutely no idea” his craft was allegedly involved in the hit-and-run crash, his attorney says.

Through tears, a friend of Ella’s detailed how passionate she was about ballet and the performing arts, having recently taken on a role in the school’s production of “Chicago.” The teen also took singing lessons and was a member of the speech and debate team.

Her friend said the slain teen had hoped to one day become president of the United States.

“Ella, you had so many qualities to admire,” she said. “You were passionate about your faith. You loved your family. You loved your friends. And you were loved by all. I miss you so much, and I will honor your memory by never forgetting the special things about you.”

Ella’s sister, Adalynn Adler, also wrote a letter read by their aunt, in which she said, “I will always have you in my heart.”

Miami City Ballet detailed Ella’s impact on the company, calling her “an integral part of our family, radiating potential and promise whose kindness, warmth, and infectious joy were known to all.”

The funeral service concluded with many young people bursting into tears as photos and videos of Ella were put on display, with Rihanna’s “Diamonds in the Sky” playing in the background.

Ella died after she was struck by a boat Saturday while celebrating a friend’s birthday. The 15-year-old dancer was left bobbing in the water as first responders reported “a lot of blood” coming from her body after the crash.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which is investigating the hit-and-run, said no suspect has been identified yet as authorities put out a $20,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest, along with $5,000 more from Miami Crime Stoppers.

On Monday, the agency updated its description of the boat involved in the crash, noting it is a center-console craft with a light blue hull and multiple white outboard engines.

The boat also may have blue or dark blue bottom paint.

Verizon, the telecommunications company, made the list because of the potential growth in the communications sector.

The performance of the U.S. stock market has been excellent in 2024. Year to date, the S&P 500 Index and the Nasdaq-100 index are both up over 11%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is higher by more than 5%. This is good news for equity investors with money in the market, but there is a downside; as stocks surge higher, undervalued blue chips become harder to find.

What Is an Undervalued Stock?

When investors talk about a stock being undervalued, they mean a stock they believe is trading at a price lower than it is actually worth.

Stocks have a market value represented by their current price, but they are valued by analysts and investors in other ways. Fundamental metrics such as price-to-book, price-to-sales or price-to-earnings ratios can also indicate value. If the market price of a stock is lower than its perceived inherent value, investors feel like they've discovered a great deal or an incredible bargain.

Why Blue-Chip Stocks?

Blue-chip stocks are older, well-established and financially sound companies. They have a long history of profit and performance, which offers equity investors a sense of confidence and security.

Many blue-chip stocks pay regular dividends, providing investors with current income and enhancing total return. They also tend to be resilient investments that can weather the ups and downs of the markets.

Overall, blue chips are sought after by investors because they offer relative safety and excellent returns over the long run.

Undervalued Blue-Chip Stocks

Blue-chip stocks are very popular and trade in high volumes. They are extensively covered by Wall Street research analysts, and their finances are well known to all. It's not easy to find bargains among blue-chip names, but undervalued blue chips do exist – and when you find them, you'll want to buy them before others realize their inherent value. Here are five blue-chip stocks for you to consider:

  • Verizon Communications Inc. (ticker: VZ )

Realty Income Corp. ( O )

Mcdonald's corp. ( mcd ), american water works co. inc. ( awk ), johnson & johnson ( jnj ), verizon communications inc. ( vz ).

VZ, in its current form, was created just 24 years ago, but it can still be considered a blue-chip stock. VZ was formed when the Regional Bell Operating Company, Bell Atlantic, merged with GTE in one of the largest corporate mergers up to that time.

That, of course, was at the dawn of the digital age. Back then, VZ was a regional phone company with national aspirations. Today, it is a $167.5 billion, high-tech powerhouse in mobile communications.

VZ provides wireless mobile and internet communications services and equipment to commercial and retail customers all over the world. The company also continues to provide landline phone service to its clients in the eastern U.S.

Considering the growth potential of the communications sector, VZ may be dramatically undervalued with a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 8.7.

VZ has a forward annual dividend of $2.66. Based on its share price, that equates to a yield of around 6.7%.

Rising interest rates and other difficult challenges in the commercial real estate sector have kept this blue-chip real estate investment trust, or REIT, from realizing its true value over the last few years.

O owns and operates more than 13,000 commercial buildings. All of them are in prime locations near growing population centers around the U.S. It leases its real estate on a long-term, triple-net basis to tenants with excellent credit. Some of the largest drugstore chains, most popular convenience stores and giant retailers rent space from O.

Realty Income is a $47 billion stock that's a member of the exclusive Dividend Aristocrats . This means that it's a component of the S&P 500 and has raised its dividend every year for at least 25 years. Currently, the stock is paying a forward dividend of $3.15, which gives it a yield of 5.9%.

When rates start to moderate later in the year, shareholders should realize good appreciation over time.

Stubborn price inflation has hit the American consumer hard, and that fact is reflected in the price of consumer cyclical stocks like MCD. Despite a broad stock market surge this year, MCD has underperformed. While this is not welcome news, it has made MCD an undervalued blue-chip stock with great potential going forward.

No fast-food restaurant is better known in the U.S. and around the world than MCD. And despite the stock's recent struggles, it's a dynamic and well-managed company. After reporting $25.4 billion in revenue in 2023, Wall Street is looking for a 4.7% increase to $26.6 billion in revenue for 2024.

President and CEO Chris Kempczinski is a capable and well-respected leader who has been busy actively modernizing the company's restaurants. He's skillfully managed inflation pressures and the challenges involved in correctly pricing menu items. Under Kempczinski's leadership, the company has been dedicated to lowering costs by using mobile technology and kiosk ordering at most locations.

MCD is a $192 billion blue chip with a current dividend yield of 2.5%.

Publicly regulated utilities are not the first kind of firms that come to mind when investors think about blue-chip stocks, but this 138-year-old company definitely qualifies. In fact, AWK is the largest investor-owned water and wastewater utility in the U.S.

AWK provides all manner of water and wastewater services to customers in 24 U.S. states, including Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Hawaii. According to Wall Street estimates, AWK should report $4.5 billion in revenue in 2024 and grow that figure by 6% to $4.8 billion in 2025.

AWK is dedicated to making large, long-term investments in its vast pipeline system. The costs of these improvements are staggering and, despite support from the federal government, extensive spending has hurt the stock price this year. In the long run, however, AWK looks undervalued.

The broad stock market, as measured by the S&P 500, is up 11.3% this year through May 22. JNJ, on the other hand, is down a little more than 3% in that period. This poor performance does not mean, however, that JNJ is a bad company or that investors should avoid the stock.

JNJ is an established, global leader in consumer and commercial health care products. The company has three principal business segments: consumer health, pharmaceuticals and medical tech.

The consumer health division concentrates on consumer hygiene as well as the health and beauty segment. The pharmaceutical section develops and distributes drugs that are extensively used to treat infections and chronic diseases. Finally, the medical technology segment produces and sells machines and devices that help medical professionals treat patients in hospital and emergency settings in a wide range of medical fields.

In its last earnings report released on April 16, JNJ reported $2.71 in earnings per share (EPS) for the first quarter of 2024. That EPS number beat Wall Street's consensus of $2.64 by 5.5%. Revenue for the first quarter came in at $21.3 billion. Wall Street is looking for $22.2 billion in revenue for the current quarter. If JNJ is able to hit that number, it would represent a quarterly increase of 4.2%.

If your Memorial Day plans include some time at the beach, we've got you covered — and not just with sunscreen.

Going to the beach is no fun if it's covered with stinky seaweed or if toxic fumes from red tide permeate the air.

And swimming with enteric bacteria — think fecal pollution — is just plain gross.

We've gathered the latest test results and health advisories from the Florida Department of Health and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to help you stay safe before you head out for the long weekend.

Is it safe to swim or fish in Palm Beach County, Florida?

Weekly data on  beach water quality  is from the Florida Department of Health. Red tide  and  algal bloom  data are from FWC.  Red tide  shows conditions from last seven days and  algal bloom  is from the last 90 days.

What is enteric bacteria and what are the symptoms if you come into contact with them.

Enterococci are enteric bacteria which normally inhabit the intestinal tract of people and animals. It's an indication of fecal pollution. It may come from stormwater runoff, pets, wildlife or human sewage. 

They can be ingested while swimming or enter the skin through a cut or sore.

Symptoms include upset stomach, diarrhea, eye irritation and skin rashes.

What are blue-green algae and what are symptoms if you inhale toxins?

Blue-green algae are types of bacteria called cyanobacteria. They can be blue, bright green, brown or red, and can have a strong odor similar to rotting plants, according to the Florida Department of Health. 

If people or animals splash in the water or if boats create wakes, the algae cells can be broken apart, and the cyanotoxins can be released into the air. The toxins mix with water droplets and spray, causing people and animals to potentially inhale the toxin.

Water from areas with blue-green algae can make animals and people sick. These toxins can't pass through your skin easily so swallowing large amounts of contaminated water is what causes illness.

For some people, exposure to blue-green algae can cause rashes, stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. People who are very sensitive to smells can have respiratory irritation. Sometimes, high exposures of toxin can affect the liver and nervous system.

What is red tide and what happens if you come into contact with it?

Karenia brevis is a naturally occurring, single-celled organism belonging to a group of algae called dinoflagellates.

Red tide can cause coughing and sneezing and can irritate your eyes, nose and throat. Reactions to red tide can be worse for people with asthma, emphysema, bronchitis or any chronic lung disease, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Swimming in or around red tide can cause skin irritation, rashes and burning and sore eyes.  If you come into contact with red tide, wash off with soap and water, especially if your skin is easily irritated. 

Red tide toxins also can accumulate in filter-feeders such as oysters and clams, which can lead to neurotoxic shellfish poisoning in people who consume contaminated shellfish.

Is there sargassum on the beach? Check latest conditions with these webcams

Sargassum is a type of large brown seaweed  — which actually is a type of algae — that floats in masses before it washes up on beaches. These large floating clumps, patches, rafts, or "blobs"  can stretch for miles across the ocean.

The rafts provide habitats for crab, shrimp, sea turtles and fish.

Tiny organisms that live in sargassum — like larvae of jellyfish — may  irritate ski n if you come into contact with it, according to the Florida Department of Health.

"Exposure to decomposing seaweed can result in difficulty breathing, headaches, nausea, and skin eruptions called 'swimmers’ dermatitis,'” according to the Centers for Disease Control.

As sargassum rots, it releases hydrogen sulfide, which can be irritating. Seek medical attention if you experience respiratory problems, the CDC said.

If you do touch or swim with sargassum, the CDC advised rinsing off with "copious amounts of fresh water."

Vero Beach Air Show 2024: Best places to watch Blue Angels perform this year

The Vero Beach Air Show is this weekend.

The best view of the show, especially the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, will be the Vero Beach Regional Airport. Tickets are $25 each for prime viewing and event displays.

Otherwise, here are six other places to catch a glimpse of the air show this weekend.

Walking Tree Brewery

Grab a pint of local craft beer, such as the nationally award-winning Babycakes oatmeal stout, and watch from the outside patio at Walking Tree Brewery. The brewery, which opened in a former World War II aviation supply warehouse in 2016, is just south of the airport. The building uses large industrial fans instead of air conditioning.

Work on your golf swing while you get a glimpse of the air show at BigShots Golf, just east of the airport. The outdoor golf entertainment venue is like Top Golf or Drive Shack. Riverside Cafe

"Cruise to the Riverside" Cafe — shoutout to Jake Owen — and grab a seat on the outside deck, if you can, to catch a glimpse of the air show to the west. The restaurant along the Indian River Lagoon is a great spot to barhop by boat, responsibly, because it doesn’t charge customers to dock and dine.

Riverside Park

The city park is on the west side of the barrier island, near the base of the Barber Bridge, along the Indian River Lagoon, facing the airport. Riverside Park is dog-friendly, includes a walking track, features picnic areas and also has public boat ramps.

In flat Florida, the highest vantage points tend to be bridges. In Vero, the northern Merrill P. Barber Bridge (State Road 60) and the southern Alma Lee Loy Bridge (17th Street) are close enough to the airport to give bridge walkers and runners a decent view of the air show.

If you have access to any type of watercraft — boat, kayak, paddleboard, even pedal boat — there’s nothing more Treasure Coast than watching something in the sky from the Indian River Lagoon. Launch from the Vero Beach City Marina public boat ramp.

The electoral geography of the UK is changing.

Following the recommendations of independent Boundary Commissions for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the next UK general election - which Sky News understands will be on 4 July - will be fought on new constituency boundaries, replacing those in operation since 2010.

This is the sixth periodic review to be implemented since the war. The next review is not scheduled until October 2031.

Exploring how this movement of voters affects the political makeup of the House of Commons is a task that Colin Rallings and myself have been doing over the past thirty years following previous boundary adjustments.

Rishi Sunak's decision to call a general election has kickstarted what is known as the "wash-up" period - the term used to describe the final days before parliament is formally dissolved.

It means the government will now try to progress any outstanding legislation with the aim of making it law before parliament is prorogued, and the current parliamentary session comes to an end, on Friday.

However, with such a limited timeframe, it is expected that a number of bills that have defined this parliamentary session are likely to fall by the wayside.

Sky's political reporter Alex Rogers   takes you through the key bills that are unlikely to make it into law:

The political parties have been setting out their election campaigns, with voters going to the polls exactly six weeks from today.  

On the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson speaks to deputy political editor Sam Coates , who is following the prime minister on his campaign trail around the UK, visiting four nations in two days. 

He also chats with chief political correspondent Jon Craig about the launch of Labour's campaign in Kent.

Plus, Sky's online campaign correspondent Tom Cheshire tells Niall why the parties are spending big money online and whether it could affect the election outcome.

Two Tory ministers and deputy speaker Dame Eleanor Laing have confirmed they will not stand in next month's general election.

Transport minister Huw Merriman is among five Conservative MP to reveal they will not seek re-election, following Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's announcement that the country will go to the polls on 4 July.

The Bexhill and Battle MP said in a statement he has "loved being an MP" and is departing with "a heavy heart". He did not give a reason for choosing to stand down.

Mr Merriman, who has been in parliament for nine years, has a majority of 26,059 votes, winning over 63.6% of the vote in 2019.

His announcement came hours after that of fellow Tory minister Jo Churchill.

A minister asked a meeting of Tory MPs whether it was still possible to submit a letter of no confidence in the prime minister after he announced the election, Sky News understands.

Sky's political editor Beth Rigby revealed in her  Electoral Dysfunction podcast  that health minister Dame Andrea Leadsom made the query at the 1922 Committee of backbench Tory MPs yesterday.

Dame Andrea declined to comment when contacted by Sky News, saying "1922 Committee meetings are private".

Hours after Rishi Sunak announced there would be an election on 4 July, Beth Rigby reported there were considerable discussions on Conservative WhatsApp groups about whether there was still a route to stop a general election.

She told the podcast MPs are "really unhappy" with the timing of the vote, with some texting her saying it was "absolute madness".

One minister, she says, told her the letters were already going in again for a vote of no confidence in the PM, indicating the election was called "from a position of weakness".

We've just been hearing from our deputy political editor Sam Coates , who is in Inverness, where Rishi Sunak has arrived in the last hour.

Sam explained that Scotland is the third UK nation the PM is visiting today, and said: "Rishi Sunak knows he's the underdog.

"In fact, calling himself the underdog is pretty much a large part of his campaign, which is rather unusual for a prime minister.

"But then again, it is rather unusual for a prime minister to go to the country when he is 20 points behind in the polls."

He summarised the PM's pitch, which is saying the world is a dangerous place with uncertainty at home and abroad, and voters "cannot afford to change direction" and go for Labour.

What has stuck out to Sam throughout the campaign events today is "they are not gigantic rallies with hundreds and hundreds of people".

"They are quite tightly-controlled affairs with a few dozen, often invited individuals, who are called upon in some cases to talk to the PM - they make small talk, and then he moves on.

"The whole point of them is in order to generate pictures for the TV cameras."

Sam said he has been flying in a private jet "basically paid for by private donors" to get to these out-of-town places.

He also said the Tory party is "trying to manipulate the image" to make campaign events "look busy and warm" when, in reality, "they're hiring vast spaces with proportionally not that many people in them".

"They are hoping this makes him look active and real, and part of the community, understanding of people's concerns.

"But he's so far behind - the question is, will it work."

Labour sources tonight have rejected a Tory push for multiple election debates through the six-week campaign - confirming their participation in two.

Party sources have told Sky News they "won’t be tearing up the format established in previous elections just to suit this week’s whims of the Tory party".

Sir Keir Starmer will take part in two debates during the campaign, the sources said, emphasising that their "priority" is to speak with voters and take questions from the media.

This evening, Rishi Sunak said the Labour leader doesn't want to debate him because "because he doesn’t have a plan and doesn’t have the courage to say what he wants to do".

Writing in The Telegraph, the PM made the case that the UK would be "less secure in every way" under Labour, arguing that while he offers "bold action, they do not".

On social media, party chair Richard Holden has tried to goad Labour into accepting the challenge, accusing Sir Keir of multiple U-turns.

And speaking to The Express, Mr Holden said it's "no surprise that spineless Sir Keir Starmer is now chickening out of debates".

Nigel Farage has said he will not be making a return to British politics after a general election was called.

The Reform UK honorary president and former UKIP leader said he had thought "long and hard" as to whether he should stand to become an MP in the 4 July general election announced on Wednesday, but said "it is not the right time".

Mr Farage said although the general election is important, the United States election in November "has huge global significance" so he has chosen to "help with the grassroots campaign" there as a "strong America...is vital for our peace and security".

He has helped Donald Trump's campaign since 2016.

Reform UK leader Richard Tice told Sky News Mr Farage will still help with their election campaign, which he is "absolutely thrilled" with, and said the Reform co-founder will be "very busy" during the campaign.

Moments later, Mr Farage retweeted a social media post saying he is quitting his GB News show during the campaign so he can canvass for Reform UK.

Rishi Sunak is challenging Sir Keir Starmer to multiple TV debates throughout the course of the general election campaign as the PM tries to make up a 20 point poll deficit.

The Telegraph is reporting that the Tories want a head-to-head debate between the two candidates for PM every week of the campaign - which would equal a record six debates.

On social media, Richard Holden has tried to goad Labour into accepting the challenge, accusing Sir Keir of multiple U-turns.

Meanwhile, Mr Sunak said the Labour leader doesn't want to debate him because "he doesn’t want to because he doesn’t have a plan and doesn’t have the courage to say what he wants to do".

Writing in The Telegraph, the PM made the case that the UK would be "less secure in every way" under Labour, arguing that he offers "bold action, they do not".

He repeated his pitch that he offers security in a dangerous world, a plan to tackle illegal migration, and low taxes.

Rishi Sunak was barely two minutes into his general election announcement yesterday when a song began blaring near No 10.

Younger or less politically astute viewers may have assumed the tune was part of the prime minister's efforts to inspire the nation, as he didn't miss a beat in his speech when the music came in.

Its purpose, however, was very different.

The song - Things Can Only Get Better by D:Ream - was the official anthem of Sir Tony Blair's landslide victory for Labour in 1997.

The party adopted the track which had already had mainstream success in the year after its release in 1993. It re-entered the charts during Sir Tony's campaign, which featured the lead singer Peter Cunnah performing the song live at several rallies.

4. Caliber 40 Sailboat

The layout of the Caliber 40 is comfortable and accommodating for a cruising couple, with six feet, four inches of headroom and plenty of storage. There's also an optional in-mast furling system to make sail handling a breeze. The cockpit is roomy and perfect for lounging around or entertaining guests.

Because of her heavy displacement, she requires some assistance from the wind. However, sailing 5 knots in 9 knots of wind with a beam reach isn't bad and can last up to 140 miles in the trade winds, which is not too shabby. This sailboat sails well and has a surprisingly light helm. The boat heels to 15 degrees, but it doesn't have the signature hobbyhorse effect that heavy displacement boats typically have.

Her overall performance is respectable, with a top speed of 9 knots under power in 10 knots of wind. In ideal conditions, she can reach up to 14.5 knots under power, so this one's no slouch when it comes to getting around quickly or having fun on the water!

Though the Tartan 37 is very reliable and durable, she has some downsides, such as her high maintenance costs, small water tank, and inefficient interior design. If you're spending most of your time on the boat, then these will likely be little issues that don't take away from your overall experience.

If you do decide to purchase this boat, make sure you can afford all the necessary upkeep it requires! Kids and adults gather at a Memorial Day parade to honor and celebrate veterans in South Portland. Sofia Aldinio/ Staff Photographer

BATH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at 200 Congress Ave. and concludes at Library Park and will be followed by a wreath-laying service at 11 a.m.

BERWICK 11 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at Berwick Town Hall/Sullivan Square and proceeds to Lord’s Cemetery by way of Wilson and Allen streets. After a ceremony there, the parade will continue down Saw Mill Hill Street with a pause at the Somersworth-Berwick Bridge for a brief memorial service for those lost at sea. The parade ends at Sullivan Square with a memorial service honoring area veterans.

BIDDEFORD-SACO Opening ceremony at 9:55 a.m. Monday at Saco City Hall. Parade starts at 10 a.m. from Saco City Hall and proceeds along Main Street and down York Hill into Biddeford, continues along Main Street, onto Alfred Street and finishes at Veteran’s Memorial Park with a closing ceremony at 10:45 a.m.

BRUNSWICK-TOPSHAM 9 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from Topsham Town Hall, pauses for observances while crossing the Brunswick-Topsham bridge, and concludes at the Brunswick Mall.

CAPE ELIZABETH 9 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at the middle school parking lot, turns right on Scott Dyer Road, right onto Route 77 and ends at the village green adjacent to the town hall. A brief ceremony and laying of the wreath will be held at the Village Green after the parade.

CUMBERLAND 8 a.m. Monday. Kids run at Greely High School followed by 5K Run and Remember race at 8:30 a.m. Parade starts at 10 a.m. at Mabel I. Wilson School and ends at the veterans’ monument in Moss Side Cemetery in Cumberland Center, where a ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. Advertisement

FALMOUTH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from 65 Depot Road (Falmouth American Legion) to Pine Grove Park, where a ceremony will be held.

FREEPORT 9:30 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from Holbrook Street, heads north on Main and makes a right onto School Street, then right onto Park Street, ending in Memorial Park. There will be a small ceremony in Memorial Park starting at 10 a.m.

GORHAM 11 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Village School (12 Robie St.) and ends at Eastern Cemetery on Johnson Road.

GRAY 11:30 a.m. Monday. Parade leaves the Russell School (8 Gray Park), proceeds to Shaker Road and continues to the Soldiers Monument at the intersection of Routes 26 and 3 for a wreath-laying ceremony. Parade continues north to the American Legion Post (15 Lewiston Road) for a closing ceremony.

LYMAN 1 p.m. Monday. Parade starts at Waterhouse Road/Mill Pond in Goodwins Mills and ends at the Lyman Town Hall on South Waterboro Road.

NEW GLOUCESTER 9 a.m. Monday. Parade leaves from Memorial Elementary School (86 Intervale Road) and heads down Intervale Road to Route 100/202 to Veterans Park for a memorial service. The parade will reconvene and go down Peacock Hill Road, then take a left on Gilmore Road. Advertisement

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 1 p.m. Monday. Parade starts at the corner of Ballpark Way and E. Emerson Cumming Boulevard and proceeds down Saco Avenue, Old Orchard Beach Street to First Street and ends at Veteran’s Memorial Park.

PORTLAND 2 p.m. Monday. The procession starts at Longfellow School (432 Stevens Ave.) and ends at Evergreen Cemetery for a commemoration ceremony.

SANFORD 10 a.m. Monday. The parade starts at the Sanford Armory (88 William Oscar Emery Drive), proceeds up Gowen Park Drive and ends at Central Park.

SCARBOROUGH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Scarborough High School, turns onto Route 114 and then Route 1, past town offices to the Maine Veterans Home and concludes with a ceremony there.

SOUTH PORTLAND 10:30 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Southern Maine Community College parking lot, proceeds down Broadway to the Veterans Monument for a short Memorial Day recognition service.

WELLS 9 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Wells High School (200 Sanford Road) and proceeds to Ocean View Cemetery for a ceremony and musical performances. Advertisement

WESTBROOK 10 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds down Main Street and will be followed by a ceremony in Riverbank Park.

WINDHAM 9 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Windham Town Hall and proceeds onto Route 202 toward Windham High School. At 10 a.m., there will be a ceremony in front of Windham’s Veterans Memorial Flagpole at Windham High School.

YARMOUTH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade leaves from Yarmouth High School (286 West Elm St.) and proceeds to the Memorial Green at Town Hall for a ceremony.

YORK 10 a.m. Monday. Parade starts near St. Christopher’s Church (4 Barrell Lane) and proceeds down York Street to York Town Hall.
