BLUE BOAT HOME

Built for a yachting enthusiast, the first Burger 48 Cruiser is designed to fit her owner's lifestyle. NORTHLAND

NORTHLAND’s 103’-6” (31.5m) modern exterior design and contemporary interior décor were developed by the award-winning De Basto Designs of Miami, Florida USA. De Basto, working closely with the owner, created a stylish, ocean-going, long-range explorer yacht designed for cruising and enjoying the world’s sportfishing hot spots.

LADY GAYLE MARIE

LADY GAYLE MARIE

LADY GAYLE MARIE is the fourth Burger yacht built for this repeat owner. Interior volume abounds over this vessel's three interior decks. A round glass elevator, quarter-sawn sapele stile and rail construction with pomele-cut, recessed panels and fluted columns create a distinctive, rich interior.

SEA OWL

SEA OWL has been completely personalized with various hand-carved wildlife motifs above the doorways throughout the vessel. The interior features multiple varieties of teak to create her wall paneling, flooring and furniture. A distinctive green hull and off-white superstructure provide an additional level of elegance.

SYCARA IV

SYCARA IV recaptures the splendor, grace and charm of an era gone by. SYCARA IV was built as a traditionally styled, early-1920s era Fantail Cruiser. SYCARA IV travels America and its surrounding waters such as the Great Lakes, the Erie Barge Canal system as well as its mighty rivers and the Intracoastal Waterways.

TÒ-KALÒN

TÒ-KALÒN is a contemporary-styled Enclosed Bridge Motor Yacht built for speed by incorporating extensive use of strong, lightweight materials and carefully calculated design and engineering parameters. TÒ-KALÒN’S interior revolves around sapele paneling, with accents of sapele pomele that flow throughout the main deck salon and guest accommodations.

INGOT

The interior is accented by 104 custom-built round Honduras mahogany pillars with maple burl-inlaid veneers.

Twins

Burger Twins

Identical yachts with different ports, this pair features classically styled exteriors paired with traditionally designed interiors, distinguished by recessed-paneled makoré, wonderful fluted-column details and elegant, soothing tones of cream, rust and brown.

MIRGAB V

Distinguished by its unique features, MIRGAB V includes side deck bulwarks that fold into a veranda, an integral swim platform that converts to a grand stairway to the sea and a pneumatic circular elevator that raises three deck levels. The use of raised-panel makoré makes for a classic and elegant interior design.

TENACITY

The interior décor incorporates an “arched” design element that flows tastefully through the galley, master and dining areas along with complementary green marbles and granites.

LADY PAT

LADY PAT has a simple, clean and contemporary motif. A custom-built sofa and loveseat with matching lounge chairs along with a custom designed, Burger-built, cherry dining table and coffee table fill the space beautifully. The foyer offers a striking contrast with noché travertine stone, accented with black granite inlays.

WOW

The unusual English brown oak used throughout WOW is the perfect backdrop for contemporary stainless steel, untreated bronze and leather left to gracefully patina with usage and age. Finished dark wenge floors add an exotic contrast to the neutral cream and taupe colors used in the carpets and upholstery.

BEST N SHOW

BEST N SHOW

BEST N SHOW uses a luxurious combination of exotic interior veneers and hardwoods, including Honduras mahogany, combined with amboyna burl on the main deck level, ciricote rosewood on the upper deck and lacewood, amboyna burl and ribbon-striped mahogany below deck.

WIMIL

WIMIL’s interior is exemplified by the salon’s beamed ceiling and its recessed paneling decorated with white gold-leaf insets. Makoré and madrone burl wood surfaces throughout the yacht add deep, rich brown contrasts to background tones of cream. Large windows allow an abundance of natural light in all sectors of the main deck.

LADY LARSA

LADY LARSA’S interior can be described as classic contemporary with traditional accents. The full-beam master suite is completely private, located just forward of the engine room and accessible via private stairway.

SERENITY

SERENITY has an elegantly detailed interior and a distinctive exterior featuring her dark green hull and warm white superstructure. She has a traditional interior with raised-panel mahogany construction and French accents.

FAE LON

FAE LON’S interior has a beautifully influenced Asian theme. Black absolute granite flooring throughout the main deck combined with quartered-makoré raised and recessed panels provide the perfect backdrop for special decorative elements such as shoji screens and Asian "shu" symbols.

JUBILEE

Natural-finished cherry with exquisite Art Deco accents are used throughout JUBILEE. This yacht is the first Burger to incorporate “black box” technology which allows the radar, sonar, GPS and electronic charting information to be viewed centrally on one display monitor. JUBILEE also features a hydraulically retractable arch and mast assembly.

SEAQUESTER

SEAQUESTER was built with a full-beam salon area to maximize the interior space. Naturally finished, fiddle-back anigre was the logical choice for the interior lumber, creating an interior that features light, airy spaces that blend together for an ambiance of comfortable elegance.

LAD

LAD has a flush-deck design that provides ample interior and exterior space, featuring an enclosed aft deck as well as a custom fishing cockpit. The interior utilizes a neutral palette accented by greens, reds and yellows that harmonize beautifully with the rich, raised-panel cherry construction.

Burger Boat Company celebrates 150 years of building yachts

Born during the American Civil war, Burger has retained its reputation for freshness and innovation through the years. The Burger Boat Company began life in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1863, during the American Civil War. While it has changed ownerships, the company retains the name of the founding family that contributed numerous innovations to the maritime world and hundreds of craft for practically every possible use.

A museum, archived files and craft of all kinds scattered around the world – all help keep the shipyard’s rich history alive. Fans also do. A sailboat built in 1914 as Ranger , perhaps the oldest Burger still around, sank off Panama in 2006. Funding from private sources raised and rebuilt her and she has been renamed – appropriately – Sea Phoenix .

Ranger’s original builder was the great nephew of the company’s founder Henry B Burger, an industrious young man born in Germany in 1839. Young Henry started out by building Mackinaws, ubiquitous fishing craft on the upper Great Lakes. Described as ‘alert, energetic and far-seeing’, he set his sights on larger vessels.

Lake Michigan was (and still is) an essential part of life in Manitowoc. In those days, schooners brought supplies from urban centres and picked up local goods. Henry B, an excellent craftsman, established his reputation by building several of these schooners, including The City of Manitowoc , launched in 1872. That same year he merged with another builder. The new company, Greene-Rand & Burger, went on to build 30 schooners, barges, tugs and steamers combined.

In 1887, Henry bought a large dry dock and took another partner, his nephew George B. Burger & Burger built more commercial vessels. After a 40-year career, Henry’s company was a good catch for the Manitowoc Drydock Company.

Henry Burger, Jr, (George’s son) continued the family legacy. In 1892, he opened another shipyard, location of the current Burger facility. In 1907, he launched the 13.4-metre canoe-stern Lady Isabel (ex-Swastika), and in 1914 he delivered the 20.4-metre schooner Ranger. His four children succeeded him in 1914. A year later, they incorporated Burger Boat Company.

Henry C, one of three brothers, was president of the company until 1959. Despite two world wars and the Great Depression, it thrived. In 1929, Burger launched its largest yacht yet, the 33-metre Tannis and a 20-knot, 19.8-metre wooden boat. In 1938, it launched America’s first welded-steel yacht, the 24.7-metre Philip Rhodes-designed Tamaris . In 1956, it built an 11-metre aluminum sailing yacht for Reynolds Metal. A year later came Dyna , the first all-welded aluminum yacht; it sealed the reputation of Henry C as an innovator.

His son Henry E, who took over the yard in 1959, steered the company through nearly three decades of continued growth. The 1980s saw the launch of 35 yachts, many with a Hargrave design. A staggering 47 per cent of yachts 24 metres and longer built during that decade were Burgers. Their names read like the who’s who of yachting: Silver Cloud, Northlander, Mayan Queen and many more.

An ailing Henry E sought a successor to run the business. John McMillan, building a 26-metre Burger, seemed like a fitting candidate. After buying Burger in 1986, McMillan sold the company to a division of Tacoma Boat Building Company in 1989. The timing could not have been worse. The luxury tax signed into law in November 1989 shook the luxury sector to its core. One chilly 1990 November day, Burger’s management received a fax notifying them that the company would close at the end of the last shift that day. The yard was shuttered for more than two years until two successful entrepreneurs from Chicago, Jim Ruffolo – Burger’s current president and CEO – and David Ross saw a jewel in the padlocked yard. ‘I grew up in Wisconsin and knew of Burger since I was a child,’ Ruffolo says. ‘To have an opportunity to be a caretaker of Burger was wonderful.’

Substantial investments into a 5,600 square metre building hall allowed the shipyard to increase its capacity. Since 1992, Burger has built and launched 36 vessels. Among fine custom-built yachts are the flagship 46.6 metre_ Ingot_ (pictured below) and award-winning 43.9 metre Mirgab V (now Maghreb V ).

When new yacht orders became scarcer around the world, Burger returned to its commercial roots building, among others, a passenger boat for Chicago and two research vessels for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. These vessels, built to today’s EPA and USCG standards, are demanding builds.

Far from being a traditional yard stuck in the past, Burger has shown innovation and the ability to re-invent itself, time and again, sure ingredients for its extraordinary longevity.

In addition to Burger’s boat building repertoire, they offer a comprehensive array of complimentary services including custom furniture design, speciality metal and joinery fabrication, refit, repair and maintenance.

Burger Boats are located in Wisconsin, USA, and their modern, full-service facility with eight heated construction bays, covers eight acres in total. Capable of building vessels up to 260 feet (80m), this state-of-the-art premises also has an extended deep-water seawall, launch well and large capacity Marine Travelift.

History of Burger Yachts

The history of the Burger Boat Company begins with Henry Burger who, having moved with his family from Germany to the USA when he was a child, began as an apprentice shipbuilder at the Wolf & Davidson Shipyard in Milwaukee at the age of 18.

Henry Burger was 24 when he founded the Burger shipyard, intending to produce small 20 – 30 foot Mackinaw boats for local commercial fishermen. In 1870, during the heyday of wooden sailing ships, Henry and Mr. Greene-Rand consolidated their Manitowoc shipyards to form the Greene-Rand, Burger Shipyard – building, among many others, the sailing schooners CITY OF MANITOWOC and J.I. CASE, and this partnership continued until Mr. Rand’s death in 1885.

In 1886, Henry took his nephew, George B. Burger, into partnership forming the Burger and Burger Shipyard. In 1887, envisioning the decline of new wooden sailing ships, they purchased the only dry dock in Manitowoc to begin a ship repair business.

This combination of new construction and ship repair was the formula that made Burger prosperous during the 1890’s when many other shipyards struggled. Between 1870 and the turn of the century, the Burger brand name appeared on almost 100 new vessels including steamers, tugs, scows, schooners and barges.

In 1902, Henry B. & George B. Burger, after almost 40 years in business, sold their shipyard to the Manitowoc Dry Dock Company and Henry Burger retired. Ten years earlier, in 1892, Henry’s nephew, Henry B. Burger Jr., formed a company in his own name, the Henry B. Burger Shipyard, just across the river from his uncle. It is on this site that the current Burger Boat Company has evolved.

While continuing to build small sailing and fishing vessels, Henry ‘Junior’ quickly recognized the potential advantages of the newly developed gasoline engine and the yard’s first motor launch, the 85′ cruiser, VERNON JR., was delivered in 1901. Within ten years, the company was building multiple 80, 90 and 100-foot wooden cruisers and had established a reputation for building the finest custom motor yachts.

Henry junior died in 1914, leaving the company to his wife and four children, who assumed ownership and management of the shipyard and, in 1915, they incorporated as Burger Boat Company.

Throughout the first and second World Wars the Burger Boat Company built many vessels for the US army and navy. With the advent of peace in 1945, Burger devoted its efforts to producing pleasure yachts. Luxury cruisers and auxiliaries were built and a line of custom and semi-custom yachts was introduced in 1949.

The heyday of flush decks, cruisers, houseboats, raised and semi-raised pilothouse motor yachts continued through the sixties, seventies and into the eighties. During this period, Burger worked with notable naval architects such as Sparkman & Stephens, J.B. Hargrave, C. Raymond Hunt, and Donald O’Keeffe.

In October 1986, due to the declining health of Henry E. Burger, the family sold the company to John McMillian, a then current customer building an 86-foot yacht.

Burger continued to prosper and for the period between 1985 and 1990, 47% of all the registered motor yachts over 80 feet built in the U.S. were built by Burger Boat Company.

In April 1989 McMillian sold Burger to United Shipbuilders of America, a newly created subsidiary of Tacoma Boat Building Company. Unfortunately, the unexpected loss of several large naval contracts, along with the newly instituted luxury tax, caused the already-struggling Tacoma Boat Building Company to abruptly suspend operations and in November 1990, the closing of Burger was ordered.

On February 5th 1993, 26 months after the closure, the Burger brand was reborn when Chicago entrepreneurs and businessmen David Ross and Jim Ruffolo purchased the assets of Burger Boat Company and reopened the shipyard.

The first yacht under the new management was the 91-foot Raised Pilothouse Motor Yacht WINDRUSH. This eagerly anticipated yacht was so highly acclaimed at the 1994 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, that it was directly responsible for Burger Boat Company receiving three additional yacht construction contracts.

Since its reopening, Burger has experienced tremendous growth. Along with this success and expansion, the Burger University was initiated in 2006 to provide new and ongoing training in all trades and departments.

David Ross retired in 2007 and the then co-President, James (Jim) Ruffolo, took over as sole President/CEO.

Burger are dedicated to maintaining their industry leading position and put client satisfaction ahead of all else.

The Burger collection

Notable superyacht builds from the Burger shipyard’s modern-day operation include the 142-foot (43.3m) SEA OWL, designed by Andrew Winch and launched in 2009, and the retro-styled 151-foot (46m) SYCARA IV, which was designed by Ken Freivokh.

SEA OWL was a full-custom build and the owner’s requirements were for a master stateroom on the main deck with a private study, a main salon and dining area that were open plan, and multiple exterior deck areas with space to dine, lounge and socialise.

The largest Burger-built superyacht to date is the 153-foot (46.6m) INGOT. INGOT was launched in 2008 and has both an aluminum hull and superstructure. The Burger Boat Company was responsible for her exterior design, and they collaborated with Vripack for the interior. INGOT is a mechanical masterpiece, with each system fully accessible for maintenance and providing her owner with exceptional reliability. INGOT is an ocean-going, long-range superyacht. Fully classified to the requirements of the American Bureau of Shipping and built in compliance with the Maritime Coastal Agency LY2 code, INGOT can be seen in ports around the globe.

Burger’s modern shipyard, and its highly skilled engineers and craftsmen, makes Burger a logical choice for new vessel construction, refit, repair or maintenance.

Having launched seven new yachts recently, with the largest coming in at 153 feet - named IN-GOT, don’t be surprised to learn that two of these new launches are measuring in at 42 feet in length - for those desiring a more manageable ride that can be operated without a crew!

BLUE, is a 48 Cruiser featuring a stunning De Basto Designs interior; while BLUE BOAT HOME Is the first totally customized, unique Burger 48 Cruiser. Burger went all out in conjunction with the designer and discriminating owner to develop this very special addition.

Looking for a commercial vessel, Burger has recently launched quite a few from 62 to 98 feet. One of the two 98 footers (30M), named CHICAGO’S LEADING LADY is the first steel vessel they’ve built, since launching BRODIE VI. A special, ‘Chicago’s First Lady Cruises’ build, she shows similar to the traditional Presidential Yacht, Sequoia with it’s mahogany panels and brass details—a 349 passenger, USCG certified type K vessel.

Burger’s new projects on the horizon range from a 214 foot tri-deck to a popular 112 Raised Pi-lothouse Motoryacht. Step aboard and I’ll show you around! Continue on, to take a peek at her full beam main deck owner’s stateroom with his and hers en suite baths and lots of closet space. You’ll en-joy the welcoming feel her main entry foyer provides as well. Step into her comfortably chic guest staterooms. Four in total and all with en suite baths. Looking for an optional guest configu-ration, then you would steer towards the alternative that provides you with a VIP and two guest staterooms or even a gym.

The galley is spacious and provides efficiency for any master chef to whip up a meal that would rival the finest restaurant. Come with me now to her spacious pilot house and have a seat on her settee, where you can munch on some snacks at her table and join in on the Captain’s cruising action. Now for some outside fun, follow me from the pilot house to her generously sized, open sundeck where you’ll have your choice to either sunbathe, catch up on your favorite novel in the shade or take in the ever changing views accompanied by your favorite hors d’oeuvres. Step down forward into the crew area to visualize where your six crew members will feel well taken care of in their lounge and galley area. For those with lots of goodies to bring on each trip, you’ll appreciate the generous storage Burger thought of in advance including a hidden store room you can access at the aft end of the sundeck.

Want to feel the ride…that won’t be a problem as she’s powered by CAT C32’s with a cruising speed of 18 knots —topping out at approximately 22 knots.

As we hop off this stunning example of class and performance that rivals any yacht of the same size, you’ll now know why Burger’s wish come true is to be internationally recognized as the fin-est custom yacht builder in the world!

Pizza Hut is making its way into the burger business

Pizza Hut is making its way into the burger business with the launch of a new Cheeseburger Melt.

(Gray News) – Pizza Hut is making its way into the burger business with the launch of a new Cheeseburger Melt.

The new menu item ditches the bun and brings together a medley of cheeseburger flavors wrapped into a crispy thin crust.

“As a brand known for exceptional pizzas, venturing into the burger business is an exciting first for us,” said Lindsay Morgan, Chief Marketing Officer at Pizza Hut.

Pizza Hut's new Cheeseburger Melt ditches the bun and brings together a medley of cheeseburger...

Pizza Hut is sending its drivers to some fast-food burger chains to encourage burger enthusiasts to cheat on their usual burger chains.

The Pizza Hut cars will have a QR code displayed on their back windows to scan to be entered to redeem a coupon for a free Cheeseburger Melt and Pepsi while supplies last, in select markets.

“Unlike a traditional cheeseburger, the Cheeseburger Melt dips perfectly into what we would argue is the world’s best burger dipping sauce. We challenge you to find a better burger and sauce experience,” said Rachel Antalek, Chief Food Innovation Officer at Pizza Hut.

The city made him hide his boat — so he had it painted on his fence

“I’ll do what they want, but I’m not going to do it their way.”

where are burger yachts made

When the city of Seaside, Calif., ordered resident Etienne Constable to build a fence to cover the boat parked in his driveway, he complied. But the puckish way he did it — hiring his artist neighbor to paint a realistic mural of the same exact boat on his fence — has brought him viral attention.

“We kind of hit the sweet spot between following the rules and making an elegant statement to the contrary,” says Constable.

Constable, who works in business development, has lived in the same house in Seaside for 29 years. For most of that time, his boat trailer — often with a boat attached — has sat in his driveway without issue. But in July 2023, he received a letter from the city, asserting that the municipal code requires that boats and trailers be “screened on the side and front by a six-foot-high fence,” and threatening him with a citation and a $100 fine if he failed to comply. (The Washington Post has reviewed the letter.)

To Constable, the letter came out of nowhere. The ordinance itself is not new. He hadn’t heard any complaints from neighbors, and he’s kept the boat, which he named Might as Well and uses to fish “as often as I can,” for four years in his driveway.

“I thought, ‘This is ridiculous,’ and my first reaction was to leave a nasty, nasty message at the city hall,” he says. “And then I thought, well, I might as well build a screen … I’ll do what they want, but I’m not going to do it their way.”

So he started brainstorming. That’s when he had a chat with his neighbor, Hanif Panni, a muralist and graphic artist, about potentially painting the fence to look exactly like the space it was built to cover up. The two batted ideas back and forth over the fence that separated their yards. “We wanted to make an illusion,” says Panni.

Panni, whose artist name is Hanif Wondir , was in. He had other projects on his docket, and wasn’t able to start painting the boat on the fence until early May. It took four days to complete. As he worked, people driving or walking by would stop to comment on the optical illusion, and a few neighbors told him that they, too, had received letters about the ordinance, says Panni.

The actual fence cost a few hundred bucks, per Constable, who did the labor himself. He paid Panni for painting the mural, too.

With Constable’s permission, Panni shared the finished work on social media. It quickly went viral.

“The more people see something, the more opinions there are about it … and it’s just so fun to see those branches stemming off of something that I created,” says Panni. “ … One of the reasons why I do public art, and art in general, is to inspire those conversations.”

The mural ultimately led to an approving phone call to Constable from Nick Borges, Seaside’s acting city manager, on Friday evening. Borges first saw the images of the painted fence when a friend sent them to him — neither of them knew the photos were taken in Seaside. “I thought, ‘wow, that’s pretty creative.’ I laughed at it, and then I started getting calls from local media,” says Borges.

After years of complaints that the city was too lax about code enforcement, Borges says Seaside hired someone to enforce its codes, hence the letters sent to residents. Constable’s case was closed out in November, when the fence (at that point, without the mural) was spotted, says Borges.

“We’re not taking any action,” he says. “The only action I’m going to take is a high five, and that’s it.”

This story has been updated with comment from Seaside’s acting city manager Nick Borges.

A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.

Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.

One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.

Here are the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, listed in order of length.

Jeff Bezos: Koru and Abeona

where are burger yachts made

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as she crisscrossed the Mediterranean in her first summer at sea, with her 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.

The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to her massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Even before her completion, Koru made headlines. She drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after she was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.

Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for her craftsmanship.

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad

Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.

The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.

Eric Schmidt: Whisper

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over her true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.

The ship can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, according to Moran Yacht & Ship, which oversaw her construction. She features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.

While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.

Barry Diller: Eos

where are burger yachts made

Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.

One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.

The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends her summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.

Jim Clark: Athena

where are burger yachts made

Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.

"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."

Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.

"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.

The former Stanford professor tried to sell her at various points — listing her for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but she has yet to change hands.

Larry Ellison: Musashi

Oracle founder Larry Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — which he sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen .

He purchased his current boat, Musashi, in 2011 for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship.

Named after a famous samurai warrior, the 88-meter-long yacht has both Japanese and Art Deco-inspired design elements. She also boasts amenities including an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.

Ellison is known for his extravagant spending — private islands, jets, a tennis tournament — and yachting is among his favorite and most expensive hobbies. He took up racing them in the 1990s and financed the America's Cup-winning BMW Oracle Racing team .

Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus

where are burger yachts made

Steve Jobs' wife, investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.

After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes."

Charles Simonyi: Norn

where are burger yachts made

Early Microsoft employee Charles Simonyi has purchased two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and 71-meter Skat.

Delivered in 2023, Norn is full of luxe features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that lifts to become a light-up dancefloor. She shares a militaristic style with Skat , which Simonyi sold in 2021.

Skats's name is derived from the Danish word for treasure, and she had a listing price of 56.5 million euros and was launched in 2002.

"The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi once said .

Sergey Brin: Dragonfly

where are burger yachts made

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has built a flotilla of yachts, boats, and toys known as the "Fly Fleet."

Named after a once-secret Google product , the largest of Brin's armada is the sleek Dragonfly , which boasts a movie theater and a helipad. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times.

Also in his fleet is the superyacht Butterfly, a mere 38 meters long. Often moored in the Bay Area, her crewmembers spend their downtime kitesurfing and giving swimming lessons to local kids.

The rest of his marine lineup includes a smaller boat called Firefly, as well as Jet Skis, foilboards, dinghies, and kiteboards. She takes a team of 50 full-time employees to manage, steer, and maintain the entire operation.

World's first hydrogen superyacht linked to Bill Gates hits high seas

  • This 'mothership' superyacht must store its hydrogen fuel at -423.4 Fahrenheit
  • Gates is reportedly selling a 224-ft 'shadow vessel' that pairs with the superyacht
  • READ MORE:  Hydrogen-powered plane takes to the skies over UK for first time

The world's first hydrogen gas fuel-cell superyacht, long rumored to have been commissioned by billionaire Microsoft founder  Bill Gates , is now officially for sale.

Dubbed Project 821, the 390-foot (119-meter) superyacht is designed to run on 'green' hydrogen — although to be stored as a liquid, the gas must be cryogenically stored at -423.4 degrees Fahrenheit in painstakingly designed, double-walled tanks.

Dutch  shipbuilder Feadship said the launch of this approximately $646 million vessel on May 4th at their Amsterdam shipyard sees the yachting world 'forever changed.'

The ostensibly ecologically friendly superyacht has taken over five years to construct from design to completion, with custom additions for the final buyer yet to be made.

While a spate of news reports in 2020 leaked that Feadship and design firm Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design had been commissioned by the billionaire to construct this hydrogen-powered eco-yacht, details verifying the Gates deal remained elusive.

As one yacht industry trade publication knowingly put it at the time, 'While Sinot has denied Gates is building the concept, it is understood that Gates is in talks to build a new superyacht with an unknown yard.'

That trade publication, BOAT International , published a statement from Sinot denying any official agreement with Gates for the luxury boat project.

Responding to reports in the Guardian and the Sunday Telegraph, Sinot said, 'Various articles have appeared in international media stating that Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design sold its concept Aqua to Mr. Bill Gates.'

'These articles are factually incorrect.'

Feadship, however, only declined to comment entirely, telling MegaYacht News that it 'does not comment on its order book.'

And this month, news broke on financial news site Benzinga that Gates intended to sell his ownership of an unknown superyacht as well as his $25 million yacht, the Wayfinder: a 224-foot catamaran-style boat built by famed shipbuilder Astilleros Armon.

The Wayfinder, according to Benzinga , was 'designed as a shadow vessel, typically accompanying a larger mothership, which until recently, was not disclosed.'

The site, which covers stock market trades and other business news, indicated that this mothership was, in fact, Feadship's new hydrogen superyacht, Project 821.

Unlike traditional yachts that rely on diesel engines or other fossil fuel-based means of propulsion, hydrogen fuel-cell yachts use hydrogen as their primary fuel source.

Hydrogen gas (H2) reacts with oxygen (O2) gas in the fuel cell, producing nothing but pure electricity and pure water: H2O.

'The aim has been to develop a new, clean technology not just for this project, but for the world,' Jan-Bart Verkuyl, Feadship's director and CEO, said.

The company added that the size of the yacht made it a good candidate for exploring the feasibility of a pure green hydrogen-powered fuel-cell system.

The ship's liquid hydrogen fuel requires approximately 8-10 times more storage space than traditional diesel fuel for an equivalent amount of energy, Feadship said.

All that fuel tank space, alongside the 16 fuel-cell energy converters themselves, plus the needed switchboard connection for the DC electrical grid, and a set of water-vapor emission vent stacks, added 13 feet to the ship's original specs.

'For those captivated by cutting-edge innovations,' Feadship said in a statement, 'this yacht presents an opportunity for potential acquisition as it showcases the pinnacle of modern technological advancements.'

The company pitched the high-priced luxury vessel as an investment in the sustainably technology's future, like a glamorous R&D project.

'Investing in the required technology is necessary to make the transition away from fossil fuel,' Feadship said, 'and hydrogen is one of the most efficient and cleanest options.'

But, environmentally conscious amenities aside, Project 821 does also serve its elite market of wealthy seafarers with a variety of 'superyacht' prerequisites.

The ship has five decks above the waterline and two below sea level.

It has 14 balconies, seven fold-out platforms, a pool, a Jacuzzi, a steam room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a home gym, pantry, and two offices each with a fireplace.

The ship also comes with space for its owner to stock a full library.

According to Feadship, the boat's power and food stores allow for an 'entire week’s worth of silent operation at anchor or [briefly] navigating emission-free at 10 knots while leaving harbors or cruising in protected marine zones.'

'It creates, in essence, a secluded four-level townhouse-by-the sea,' the firm boasted in their press release, 'within the much larger yacht.'

British RWD Studio, rather than Sinot, was reportedly responsible for crafting Project 821 ship-exterior and interior décor, deploying marble, rattan, taupe eucalyptus and limed oak to create, in Feadship's words, 'a luxe coastal vibe.'

When pressed for comment this year, a Feadship spokesperson reiterated that it would not be disclosing who had originally commissioned the eco-superyacht, nor who would ultimately buy the ship.

'Feadship does not share any information about owners and prices,' the firm said, 'whether it is a 19-meter yacht from the 1960s or a 119-meter yacht from the 21st century.'
