Luxury yacht ZIGGY from Ocean Alexander was launched in 2021 from the shipyard in Taiwan. She measures 35.13m (115'3") and is a 35R model constructed with a GRP hull and superstructure, with naval architecture from the shipyard and interior and exterior styling by Evan K. Marshall. The accommodation sleeps up to 10 guests over five en-suite cabins with a professional crew of five to take care of every detail.

EXTERIOR The main deck aft is a sheltered environment offering a cosy space to relax on the C-shaped sofa and enjoy coffee mornings with friends and family. Two stairways lead down to the lower deck swim platform which connects to the beach club to create a spacious indoor/outdoor entertainment area beside the water.

Side walkways along the main deck lead to stairways up to the foredeck, where guests have panoramic views from the C-shaped sofa with drinks table, or the broad sunbed across the bow. The upper deck aft has a large circular dining table for intimate meals between the group. Two sofa/loungers are places along the stern for guests to savour after-dinner drinks along with the views.

On the sundeck, there is a Jacuzzi aft and centre with a large sunbed on both sides, a wet bar with stool seating to port and sofa seating forward on both sides for guests to sit and take in the views.

INTERIOR The lower deck layout places the crew accommodation forward, the guest accommodation amidships, the engine room behind and the beach club with gym in the stern.

The Master suite is forward on the main deck, the galley to port and the main foyer with day head to starboard. The formal dining area and main salon are combined into one large room aft, with the formal dining area seating up to 10 guests in a bright contemporary space with glass sliding doors on both sides to create a more alfresco experience. The main salon is aft to port and consists of a corner sofa and armchairs around a coffee table, while the widescreen TV is to starboard and a glass sliding door lead out onto the main deck aft.

ZIGGY Specifications

From the main foyer guests and crew have access to the upper deck, where the helm station is forward and the skylounge behind. The skylounge offers a cosy space to relax with the latest films or live sports, and provides a large corner sofa, coffee table and widescreen TV to port, a drinks/games table behind and a wet bar to starboard.

Yacht Accommodation

The accommodation sleeps a maximum of 10 guests in 5 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite, 2 double cabins and 2 twin cabins. The Master suite is full beam on the main deck forward, and within thee is a king-sized bed, widescreen TV, a desk/vanity to starboard and two armchairs to port. A large wardrobe is placed forward on both sides of the room and a spacious en-suite bathroom with a sink and toilet on both sides and a shared central bathtub and shower. The double cabins are amidships to port and starboard on the lower deck. Both have a queen-sized bed, widescreen TV, desk/vanity, wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower. The twin cabins are forward of the double cabins to port and starboard respectively. Both have two single beds, a widescreen TV, desk/vanity, wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower. The professional crew of 5 will keep everything running efficiently throughout the cruise.

Not too long ago, the only way boatbuilders and designers knew how to convey the sense of space a yacht offered was by referring to the length overall. Even the most seasoned yacht owners judged the possibilities by the literal length. Similarly, yacht after yacht from competing brands offered essentially the same configurations, leaving little differences to distinguish one from the other.

Thankfully, perspectives on both sides of the buying equation started changing.

Naval architects and shipyards realized that their imagination needn’t remain confined by a tally of feet and inches. They began to get creative in how they approached the volume. In fact, they realized that they could push out volume, or gross tonnage, impressively within that physical envelope, opening up a world of possibilities without hurting performance.

Similarly, yachtsmen began to learn that gross tonnage was more important than feet and inches in terms of the creature comforts they wanted.

The 116-foot-9-inch Ocean Alexander 35R, whose gross tonnage is just shy of 300, is the latest model to demonstrate both points. Hull No. 1 was commissioned by a client before the shipyard could exhibit the yacht, and Hull No. 2 sold quickly during its debut at the most recent Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida. As of early December, Hull No. 7 was the first available build slot, with delivery anticipated in 2024. The series is attracting attention from loyal Ocean Alexander buyers and newcomers alike.

“R” in this series stands for “Revolution.” It’s an apt description because the series, which also includes the 88-foot 27R and 97-foot 30R, is different from anything else Ocean Alexander has built in its 40-plus years in business. Starting with the styling, which is decidedly modern and edgy, there’s a deliberate break from the builder’s more traditional look. It’s all the more notable that the appearances of both the traditional cruisers and the Revolution series come from yacht designer Evan K. Marshall.

The Revolution series’ design serves practical purposes too. The 35R’s high, vertical bow, as part of the hull design from Arrabito Naval Architects, provides more room inside. Bulwark cutouts along the main deck benefit the dining area and salon, as well as the owner’s stateroom, all of which are framed with nearly sole-to-ceiling panes of glass. Add in sliding glass doors to each side along with the 35R’s 25-foot beam, and the sensation is akin to being aboard a yacht at least 15 feet larger.

A similar sensation comes belowdecks. There, a short passageway to starboard leads beyond the beach club (more on that in a moment) to a head with a shower, as well as a separate gym with a sauna. Wellness areas like this one are the domain of mega-yachts upward of 150 feet length overall. Not only is it a singular feature, but it also fits without looking or feeling cramped. Even a dedicated head here is pretty uncommon for the 35R’s category. And nothing impinges upon practical space in the engine room farther forward.

Now, back to the beach club. It combines the exceptional with the practical. Marshall designed a T-shaped expanse of glass that stretches nearly the entire width of the overhead and comes partially down the forward bulkhead. It makes the cozy, air-conditioned space—outfitted on Hull No. 2 with a TV and bar to port and a settee opposite—look and feel airier. As appealing as this is, the glass holds an even bigger benefit for those seated on the main deck aft. When the 35R’s transom is open at anchor, moms and dads can take a quick glance through the glass to see their kids jumping off the swim platform or playing in the water without having to stand up and peer over the side of the yacht.

By now, you might have the impression that glass plays a big role on board the 35R. It does, and in yet another way, it enhances the sense of space. The main-deck master stateroom has picture-window ports to each side, in keeping with the current philosophy that owners should feel a stronger emotional connection to the areas where they cruise. On this yacht, that philosophy extends into the en suite head, where a porthole sits high above the tub. Once again, big-yacht thinking makes the 35R a step above the expected.

Of course, Ocean Alexander does stick with some tradition. The interior is semicustom, so owners may enjoy the look of the white-oak soles that are aboard Hull No. 2 and popular in current home design, or they may opt for something a little richer in tone. Owners can request that the shipyard’s cabinetry shop make furnishings too, or they can select items from any number of design houses. Ocean Alexander itself pursued this route for Hull No. 2, choosing bar stools and more from the Italian company Poltrona Frau. Keep in mind that some likely requests have been anticipated, such as pop-up LED lighting rimming the bow lounge for nighttime enjoyment.

While Ocean Alexander named the 35R for its length in meters, don’t be fooled by the number. The yacht’s expansive interior and alfresco areas quickly make anyone aboard forget the distance from bow to stern. And when the guests inquire as to how big the 35R is, owners can give them a quick education in how voluminous volume trumps literal length every time.  

Each year, NBC Sports spotlights the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida during a one-hour special, which includes handing out the Best in Show award. The 35R earned that top honor in 2021, beating other world debuts for a panel of judges who evaluated performance, design and technology.

A Sleek Super Yacht Is Docked On The Halifax Waterfront – Here’s The Inside Scoop

The Super Yacht Ziggy arrived in Halifax Harbour Friday, May 19 after travelling from New Port, Rhode Island. She is owned by Michigan couple Bonnie and Harold Zeigler.

Ziggy measures just over 35 metres or 116 feet. The rear exterior of Ziggy is a space to relax and you may spot someone enjoying their morning coffee here with family and friends. Twin stairways lead to the lower deck swim platform.

Side walkways along the main deck lead to staircases up to the front deck where passengers lounge on a C-shaped sofa with drink tables and sunbeds across the bow. Ziggy’s guests don’t have to head to a Halifax pub’s patio as outdoor dinners are enjoyed on the upper deck with a large circular dining table. The outdoor dinner area includes two loungers to enjoy drinks and views of Halifax after dinner.

On the sundeck you’ll find the Jacuzzi, wet bar with stools and more sofa seating.

The interior features luxurious guest accommodations and a beach club with gym in the back.

Its lower deck layout places the crew accommodation forward, the guest accommodation amidships, the engine room behind and the beach club with gym in the stern.

The owner’s stylish master suite is forward on the main deck. The dining and main lounge inside are open concept and combined into one large room. There is room for 10 guests to dine and sliding doors on both sides. The inside includes a corner sofa, armchairs and widescreen TV.

Yesterday watched this yacht pass thru our draw bridge and head out into Lake Charlevoix.   Ziggy is a motor yacht with an overall length of 35.6 m. The yacht's builder is Ocean Alexander from Taiwan, who launched Ziggy in 2021. The superyacht has a beam of 7.64 m, a draught of 2.11 m and a volume of 311 GT.   Ziggy features exterior design by Evan K Marshall and interior design by Evan K Marshall. Up to 10 guests can be accommodated on board the superyacht, Ziggy, and she also has accommodation for 5 crew members, including the ship's captain. Ziggy has a GRP hull and a GRP superstructure. She is powered by 2 MAN engines. The yacht carries 19,500 litres of fuel on board.

After a point, you're paying to drive your fuel around. Most people who have yachts don't fill their gas tank full.

Designing crew quarters aboard superyachts

The saying ‘Happy crew, happy ship; happy ship, happy owner’ is often heard around shipyards and designer’s offices, but the challenge lies in making this truism come true. One sure-fire way is to expand the crew’s living spaces on board – an enhancement that will be mandatory on many superyachts when the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC) comes into effect. But some yachts have taken the initiative to provide exceptionally accommodating crew spaces before any regulatory agency requires it.

‘As a shipyard we try to set as high a standard as possible for the spaces where the crew sleeps and leisures,’ says Michael Breman, Lürssen Yachts’ sales director. ‘Our boats are larger, and therefore it’s easier to lay out a boat in a proper, professional way.

‘Some owners are more generous than others…” he adds, citing the 83.5m Lürssen Northern Star , launched in 2009. She has a two-deck crew area that incorporates a crew mess and lounge on the lower deck and a private crew gym on the tank deck.

‘What’s special about Northern Star is her owner. He wants to be sure that the crew is happy; that way he keeps his crew,’ Bremen says. ‘He doesn’t want to see new faces all the time.’

Another owner known for his attention to crew comfort is Dennis Washington, who recently transformed the 91.75m Evergreen into the 100m Attessa IV , winner of the 2011 World Superyacht Award for Best Rebuilt Yacht. According to Attessa IV’s captain, Ted McCumber, her crew spaces were enlarged substantially during the rebuild.

‘We actually took away some of the guest areas and made nicer spaces for the crew,’ he says. ‘We spend a lot of time at anchor; without the space we’d go nuts because there are not that many places we can tie up to.’

When Captain McCumber and the owner toured the crew accommodations on Evergreen prior to starting the rebuild, they immediately decided to change the configuration of the cabins.

‘A lot of the staterooms had three bunks, and the boss said, “There’s no way we’re going to do that,”’ says the captain.

Attessa IV accommodates her officers and chef in private staterooms and also has individual cabins for her therapist, pilot and two staff supernumeraries who may come aboard.

_Attessa IV’_s crew area also features an officer’s mess and a separate lounge for non-English speaking crew.

‘We run with a lot of Filipino crew, so we gave them their own space so they could speak their own language and be comfortable,’ Captain McCumber says. ‘On their time off, it’s hard to speak someone else’s language.’

Even more remarkable is the yacht’s new, two-level combination gym and crew lounge in the bosun’s locker area. The fitness centre features weight sets, heavy bags, treadmills, LifeCycles and stair steppers, while lounge amenities include two flatscreen TVs. It’s also a practice area for Contraband: a band that some of the crew have formed.

‘We can seat about 16 on huge couches and beanbags. It’s really kind of a neat spot where everyone relaxes. The area gets used every single night,’ McCumber says. ‘We probably spent $2 million dollars on that one space. It was a pretty big deal to do what we did.’

Giving the crew their own dedicated deck (or decks) may be common on superyachts in the 100m range, but it’s practically unheard of on smaller vessels. That’s part of what makes the 42m ‘soft expedition’ vessel E&E unique.

On the Turkish-built and Vripack-designed E&E , the master stateroom is on the bridge deck and four guest suites are on the deck just below it. That leaves the entire lower deck – about 39m in length – dedicated to crew use and storage.

‘The main focus of this project is to put the guests on the right level where they should be. If they pay a substantial charter fee, then they should be in premium location,’ says Bart Bouwhuis, Vripack director of design.

‘This has a perfect crew accommodation, not only cabin-wise and bathroom-wise but also crew lounge-wise,’ Bouwhuis says. ‘This is a crew lounge you would only see on a yacht of 50m – if you were lucky.’

The crew deck also has a good-size laundry room at the foot of the central crew stairs, allowing efficient transport of laundry to and from the upper-deck guest accommodations.

_E&E’_s six en suite crew cabins are configured with bunks, but Bouwhuis says, ‘In daily operation, they will have only one person per cabin.’

If necessary, two crew can double up and make a cabin available for a nanny or other supernumerary staff. Bouwhuis reported that the sleeping arrangements are big enough to meet the MLC 2006’s requirements – and this on a 42m boat.

Vripack pioneered this private crew deck arrangement on the 36.8m expedition yacht Jasmine a decade ago. ‘It has a very high return charter rate,’ Bouwhuis says, but admits, ‘This concept has not been followed – and I don’t know why.’

The 1999 56m Trinity Pangaea (ex-Dream; ex-Samantha Lin ) is another example of an expedition yacht with enviable crew quarters. Her raised foc’sle forward is used to house a large crew lounge and mess, leaving space on the lower deck for roomy crew cabins, some with side-by-side berths rather than bunks. Pangaea’s crew also has private access to the exterior decks for outdoor recreation time.

‘We literally had people throw résumé’s on the boat at the Fort Lauderdale show,’ says Billy Smith of Trinity Yachts.

While traditional ‘white yachts’ typically can’t offer the sort of bonus crew space found on an expedition yacht, several new projects feature innovative owner and guest accommodations that benefit their crew areas in major ways.

Take, for example, Trinity’s 60.3m Areti . On this new launch, the owner’s suite is on the upper deck, where the wheelhouse would be on most yachts of this size. The wheelhouse was moved to the main deck, but raised a few feet above deck level for a better view of the waters ahead. This enabled Trinity’s designers to fit a unique ‘crew upper loft’ deck beneath the wheelhouse and above the lower deck.

The loft area is fitted out with six spacious, double-bed crew cabins that share three heads on the deck below. Her lower deck has two additional bunkrooms with en suite heads, a large laundry and an extra-large crew mess.

‘Trinity’s position on crew,’ Smith says, ‘is that if you have a good crew you are yachting, and if you have a bad crew you are boating – and there’s an enormous difference.’

Even on motor yachts that place both guest and crew quarters on the lower deck, some designers and shipyards are coming up with ergonomic and efficient areas for the crew. The second Picchiotti Vitruvius motor yacht, the 55.8m Galileo G , designed by Philippe Briand in collaboration the Vitruvius team, is a good example. Galileo G’s crew mess is more than 150 square feet, and the laundry is almost that large.

Star Fish has an owner’s deck, complete with swimming pool, which let Marshall turn the valuable real estate on the main deck forward into a home-away-from-home for her crew. In addition to a huge galley, there is a large crew lounge to port – a major change in design from Big Fish, which has its lounge on the lower deck. Star Fish’s crew lounge incorporates a media area/coffee bar, small galley and large dining/meeting area. It features large, floor-to-ceiling windows that would not be physically possible on the lower deck.

On Big Fish , the crew quarters are finished to the level of the guest areas and are similar in décor. But when Marshall asked the crew about the new boat, they surprised him by saying they didn’t want as intricate an interior this time.

‘They wanted an interior with much less maintenance, and in addition, they wanted another décor that designated that they were in their off-time, so that they don’t feel like they are just in another space in the owner’s quarters,’ he says. ‘So the décor in the crew lounge is a bit like a trendy café. It’s decorated like nothing else on the rest of the boat, so it’s purely their space.’

Another improvement that Star Fish offers the crew is private access to the exterior deck.

‘From the crew lounge, they can go directly up onto the deck, instead of having to go through the owner’s spaces,’ Marshall says. ‘They end up with sort of an inside/outside crew space, and on nice days they can let fresh air into the lounge.’

Star Fish is not MLC compliant, ‘but it’s really close,’ Marshall adds. (His next design for this owner, 54m Sword Fish, will be designed to MLC standards.) In Marshall’s opinion, the MLC regulations on outdoor recreation space for crew may have an even bigger impact on superyacht design than the regulations for their sleeping areas. The question for owners, he says, is: ‘Where do you want the crew to hang out outside?’

Update: Star Fish was badly damaged in a yard fire during 2012. Her hull is currently for sale to a buyer who wishes to complete her superstructure.

Hot on the trail of 56 superyachts owned by Russian oligarchs and subject to seizure

The massive superyacht Dilbar stretches one-and-a-half football fields in length, about as long as a World War I dreadnought. It boasts two helipads, berths for more than 130 people and a 25-meter swimming pool long enough to accommodate another whole superyacht.

Dilbar was launched in 2016 at a reported cost of more than $648 million. Five years on, its purported owner, the Kremlin-aligned Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, was already dissatisfied and sent the vessel to a German shipyard last fall for a retrofit reportedly costing another couple hundred million dollars.

That’s where she lay in drydock on Thursday when the United States and European Union announced economic sanctions against Usmanov — a metals magnate and early investor in Facebook — over his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine.

“We are joining with our European allies to find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments, your private jets,” President Joe Biden said during his State of the Union speech Tuesday night, addressing the oligarchs. “We are coming for your ill-begotten gains.”

But actually seizing the behemoth boats could prove challenging. Russian billionaires have had decades to shield their money and assets in the West from governments that might try to tax or seize them.

Several media outlets reported Wednesday that German authorities had impounded Dilbar. But a spokeswoman for Hamburg state’s economy ministry told The Associated Press no such action had yet been taken because it had been unable to establish ownership of the yacht, which is named for Usmanov’s mother.

Dilbar is flagged in the Cayman Islands and registered to a holding company in Malta, two secretive banking havens where the global ultra-rich often park their wealth.

Still, in the industry that caters to the exclusive club of billionaires and centimillionaires that can afford to buy, crew and maintain superyachts, it is often an open secret who owns what.

Working with the U.K.-based yacht valuation firm VesselsValue, the AP compiled a list of 56 superyachts — generally defined as luxury vessels exceeding 79 feet in length — believed to be owned by a few dozen Kremlin-aligned oligarchs, seaborne assets with a combined market value estimated at more than $5.4 billion.

The AP then used two online services — VesselFinder and MarineTraffic — to plot the last known locations of the yachts as relayed by their onboard tracking beacons.

While many are still anchored at or near sun-splashed playgrounds in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, more than a dozen were underway to or had already arrived in remote ports in small nations such as the Maldives and Montenegro, potentially beyond the reach of Western sanctions. Three are moored in Dubai, where many wealthy Russians have vacation homes.

Another three had gone dark, their transponders last pinging just outside the Bosporus in Turkey — gateway to the Black Sea and the southern Russian ports of Sochi and Novorossiysk.

Graceful, a German-built Russian-flagged superyacht believed to belong to Putin, left a repair yard in Hamburg on Feb. 7, two weeks before Russia invaded Ukraine. It is now moored in the Russian Baltic port of Kaliningrad, beyond the reach of Western sanctions imposed against him this past week.

Some Russian oligarchs appear to have not gotten the memo to move their superyachts, despite weeks of public warnings of Putin’s planned invasion.

French authorities seized the superyacht Amore Vero on Thursday in the Mediterranean resort town of La Ciotat. The boat is believed to belong to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs Russian oil giant Rosneft, which has been on the U.S. sanctions list since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

The French Finance Ministry said in a statement that customs authorities boarded the 289-foot Amore Vero and discovered its crew was preparing for an urgent departure, even though planned repair work wasn’t finished. The $120 million boat is registered to a company that lists Sechin as its primary shareholder.

On Saturday, Italian financial police in the port of San Remo seized the 132-foot superyacht Lena, which is flagged in the British Virgin Islands. Authorities said the boat belongs to Gennady Timchenko, an oligarch close to Putin and among those sanctioned by the European Union. With an estimated net worth of $16.2 billion, Timchenko is the founder of the Volga Group, which specializes in investments in energy, transport and infrastructure assets.

The 213-foot Lady M was also seized by the Italians while moored in the Riviera port town of Imperia. In a tweet announcing the seizure on Friday, a spokesman for Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said the comparatively modest $27 million vessel was the property of sanctioned steel baron Alexei Mordashov, listed as Russia’s wealthiest man with a fortune of about $30 billion.

But Mordashov’s upsized yacht, the 464-foot Nord, was safely at anchor on Friday in the Seychelles, a tropical island chain in the Indian Ocean not under the jurisdiction of U.S. or EU sanctions. Among the world’s biggest superyachts, Nord has a market value of $500 million.

Since Friday, Italy has seized $156 million in luxury yachts and villas in some of its most picturesque destinations, including Sardinia, the Ligurian coast and Lake Como.

Most of the Russians on the annual Forbes list of billionaires have not yet been sanctioned by the United States and its allies, and their superyachts are still cruising the world’s oceans.

The evolution of oligarch yachts goes back to the tumultuous decade after the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union, as state oil and metals industries were sold off at rock-bottom prices, often to politically connected Russian businessmen and bankers who had provided loans to the new Russian state in exchange for the shares.

Russia’s nouveau riche began buying luxury yachts similar in size and expense to those owned by Silicon Valley billionaires, heads of state and royalty. It’s a key marker of status in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and size matters.

“No self-respecting Russian oligarch would be without a superyacht,” said William Browder, a U.S.-born and now London-based financier who worked in Moscow for years before becoming one of the Putin regime’s most vocal foreign critics. “It’s part of the rite of passage to being an oligarch. It’s just a prerequisite.”

As their fortunes ballooned, there was something of an arms race among the oligarchs, with the richest among them accumulating personal fleets of ever more lavish boats.

For example, Russian metals and petroleum magnate Roman Abramovich is believed to have bought or built at least seven of the world’s largest yachts, some of which he has since sold off to other oligarchs.

In 2010, Abramovich launched the Bermuda-flagged Eclipse, which at 533 feet was at the time the world’s longest superyacht. Features include a wood-burning firepit and swimming pool that transforms into a dance floor. Eclipse also boasts its own helicopter hangar and an undersea bay that reportedly holds a mini-sub.

Dennis Cauiser, a superyacht analyst with VesselsFinder, said oligarch boats often include secret security measures worthy of a Bond villain, including underwater escape hatches, bulletproof windows and armored panic rooms.

“Eclipse is equipped with all sorts of special features, including missile launchers and self-defense systems on board,” Cauiser said. “It has a secret submarine evacuation area and things like that.”

Eclipse was soon eclipsed by Azzam, purportedly owned by the emir of Abu Dhabi, which claimed the title of longest yacht when it was launched in 2013. Three years after that, Usmanov launched Dilbar, which replaced another slightly smaller yacht by the same name. The new Dilbar is the world’s largest yacht by volume.

Abramovich, whose fortune is estimated at $12.4 billion, fired back last year by launching Solaris. While not as long as Eclipse or as big as Dilbar, the $600 million Bermuda-flagged boat is possibly even more luxurious. Eight stories tall, Solaris features a sleek palisade of broad teak-covered decks suitable for hosting a horde of well-heeled partygoers.

But no boat is top dog for long. At least 20 superyachts are reported to be under construction in various Northern European shipyards, including a $500 million superyacht being built for the American billionaire Jeff Bezos.

“It’s about ego,” Cauiser said. “They all want to have the best, the longest, the most valuable, the newest, the most luxurious.”

But, he added, the escalating U.S. and EU sanctions on Putin-aligned oligarchs and Russian banks have sent a chill through the industry, with boatbuilders and staff worried they won’t be paid. It can cost upwards of $50 million a year to crew, fuel and maintain a superyacht.

The crash of the ruble and the tanking of Moscow stock market have depleted the fortunes of Russia’s elite, with several people dropping off the list of Forbes billionaires last week. Cauiser said he expects some oligarch superyachts will soon quietly be listed by brokers at fire-sale prices.

The 237-foot Stella Maris, which was seen by an AP journalist docked this past week in Nice, France, was believed to be owned by Rashid Sardarov, a Russian billionaire oil and gas magnate. After publication of an earlier version of this story, AP was contacted Sunday by yacht broker Joan Plana Palao, who said his company represents a U.S. citizen from California who purchased the Stella Maris last month. He declined to disclose the name of the buyer or the person from whom the boat had been purchased.

On Thursday, the U.S. Treasury Department issued a new round of sanctions that included a press release touting Usmanov’s close ties to Putin and photos of Dilbar and the oligarch’s private jet, a custom-built 209-foot Airbus A340-300 passenger liner. Treasury said Usmanov’s aircraft is believed to have cost up to $500 million and is named Bourkhan, after his father.

Usmanov, whose fortune has recently shrunk to about $17 billion, criticized the sanctions.

“I believe that such a decision is unfair and the reasons employed to justify the sanctions are a set of false and defamatory allegations damaging my honor, dignity and business reputation,” he said in a statement issued through the website of the International Fencing Federation, of which he has served as president since 2008.

Abramovich has not yet been sanctioned. Members of the British Parliament have criticized Prime Minister Boris Johnson for not going after Abramovich’s U.K.-based assets, which include the professional soccer club Chelsea. Under mounting pressure, the oligarch announced this past week he would sell the $2.5 billion team and give the net proceeds “for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.”

Meanwhile, location transponders showed Solaris moored in Barcelona, Spain, on Saturday. Eclipse set sail from St. Maarten late Thursday and is underway in the Caribbean Sea, destination undisclosed.

16 superyachts owned by Russian oligarchs

Several luxury yachts owned by wealthy Russians have been detained across Europe this month.

It comes after the West imposed sanctions on oligarchs over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine .

Some have taken evasive action – two such superyachts linked to billionaire Roman Abramovich were spotted approaching the Turkish coast on Tuesday. A group of Ukrainians tried to stop one of the yachts from docking in Turkey.

Chelsea FC owner Mr Abramovich is one of several oligarchs who were added to an EU blacklist last week as governments acted to seize yachts and other luxury assets owned by the billionaires.

Western sanctions resulted in many large vessels relocating from Europe in the past few weeks. Several have headed to places such as the Maldives, which have no extradition treaty with the US.

Where is the Abramovich-owned yacht heading?

Mr Abramovich's yacht Eclipse was seen heading towards Marmaris on Tuesday, according to data compiled by monitoring site Marine Traffic, which was seen by Reuters.

The previous day, his superyacht Solaris was moored in Bodrum, about 80 kilometres from Marmaris, data showed, after skirting waters of EU countries.

There was no suggestion Mr Abramovich was on board either of the yachts.

Which yachts have been detained?

On Monday, a superyacht linked to another Russian billionaire was detained by authorities after docking in Gibraltar.

The Axioma , believed to belong to Dmitrievich Pumpyansky, moored at Gibraltar on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Reuters TV footage showed.

Mr Pumpyansky, who is under UK and EU sanctions, owns Russia's largest steel pipe maker TMK. Data shows the 72-metre vessel is owned by a British Virgin Islands holding company called Pyrene investments, Reuters reported. On March 12, the world's biggest sailing yacht, called Sailing Yacht A and owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko , was seized by Italian police.

Several other luxury yachts have also been detained across Europe, including in Gibraltar, Mallorca in Spain's Balearic Islands and the French coast.

1. Eclipse , a superyacht linked to sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich , was this week spotted heading in the direction of Marmaris in Turkey.

2. Solaris , belonging to Mr Abramovich , moored in Bodrum at the start of the week.

3. The Axioma superyacht, belonging to Russian oligarch Dmitrievich Pumpyansky , who is on the EU's list of sanctioned Russians, was detained by authorities after docking in Gibraltar on Monday.

4. The Crescent , which was seized by the Spanish government in Tarragona, Spain, on March 17. The ship's owner is not publicly known, although it is believed to belong to Russian Igor Sechin, head of Rosneft Oil in Moscow.

5. Ragnar , owned by former KGB officer and Russian oligarch Vladimir Strzhalkovsky, who is not on the EU sanctions list.

6. Tango , owned by Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg, who was sanctioned by the US on March 11.

7. Lady Anastasia , owned by Russian arms manufacturer Alexander Mijeev, is retained at Port Adriano, Mallorca, as a result of sanctions against Russia and Belarus issued by the European Union.

8. Valerie was seized by the Spanish government in Barcelona, Spain, on March 15. Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that the ship is linked to Rostec State Corporation’s chief executive Sergey Chemezov.

9. The $578 million Sailing Yacht A owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko was seized by Italian police in the port of Trieste on March 12.

10. The 156-metre Dilbar superyacht is owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov.

11. La Datcha belongs to Russian billionaire businessman Oleg Tinkov.

12. Lady M , owned by Russian oligarch Alexei Mordashov, was seized by Italian police on March 5.

13. Amore Vero was seized in the Mediterranean resort of La Ciotat on March 3 by French authorities. The yacht is linked to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs the Russian oil giant Rosneft.

14. Quantum Blue , owned by a company linked to Russian billionaire Sergei Galitsky, the head of Russian oil giant Rosneft, was seized in southern France on March 3.

15. Superyacht Luna is owned by Russian billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov.

16. Triple Seven is owned by Russian billionaire Alexander Abramov, according to media reports. The yacht was last up for sale in 2020 for €38 million ($41.85 million).
