Altenberg — Wannabe UNESCO Site In The Ore Mountains
We’re going to have to keep an eye on Altenberg for the time being. And I very well may have to rewrite this webpage on this Saxon town one day, which is located in the Eastern Ore Mountains ( Erzgebirge in German).
The Ore Mountains should be your first tip-off that mining was big industry. So much in fact, that the entire Erzgebirge Mining Region is now a proposed UNESCO site , which is why I said that I may have to update this page.
Wouldn’t it be nice to say that Altenberg is a World Heritage Site? :-)
— Top Areas Of Interest
- Webcams (9)
In the meantime, you’ll just have to visit Altenberg’s Mining Museum and the Besucherbergwerk (real mines with around 3km of trails going towards the Czech Republic’s border) without the designation.
Speaking of kilometers of hiking trails, you could always climb to the highest peak — the infamous Kahleberg — to a whopping 905-meters above sea level. Do we even need to discuss the views of the Saxon countryside from this vantage point?
The mountainsides of Altenberg are just as active in winter as they are in summer. Maybe more so with all the downhill skiing trails (with lifts, ’cause otherwise how you gonna get up there), cross-country skiing trails, and a luge & bobsled track. For the truly crazy (I mean, adventurous) there’s a skeleton track. ;-)
Summer’s great for mountain biking, camping, or taking a jaunt over to the waterpark.
Anyone out there thinking this is just too much activity to do at one time? I do, so try breaking your sports up with a visit to the Botanical Gardens, the Saxon Milestones, and the Jagdschloss Rehefeld. Or, a quiet stagecoach ride around town.
Oh yeah, and to get yourselves all kinds of cordials at the liqueur factory.
Funny, you’d have thought that I would have to rewrite this page after hitting up all the different varieties there instead of waiting for UNESCO. ;-)

After silver, tin was the second most important metal mined and processed in the Ore Mountains. The boom in tin mining in the Ore Mountains lasted from the 14th to the 16th century, when Saxon-Czech production replaced England as the world's largest tin producer. The historic ore processing facility Prádlo IV, as well as the Altenberg Pinka and the impressive underground mining areas, provide insights into the mining and processing technologies. Pioneering developments in water collection and ore processing systems are linked to tin mining in the Altenberg-Zinnwald mining landscape. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
We are proud to present following components of the Erzgebirge / Krušnohoří mining region from our region:
The exceptionally universal value of the erzgebirge mining region.
The Erzgebirge / Krušnohoří mining region is representative of three key cultural criteria:
The technological and scientific achievements in the field of mine drainage, ore processing, metallurgy and mining science , which came from the Saxon-Bohemian ore mining between the 16th and 20th centuries. The application, further development and worldwide dissemination of these technologies and knowledge are unparalleled on a global scale.
The development of a state-organized mining industry with a direct influence on the mining administration, the education system and the social areas . This development, which served as a model for other mining regions on the European continent, not only revolutionized the administration, but also led to the emergence of a culture based mining.
In the process of shaping the region from the 12th to the 20th century into a world-wide unique cultural landscape shaped by mining. Their different stages of development are visible to this day on the basis of the original mining landscapes, mining and smelting facilities as well as the spacious and well artistically equipped mining towns.

Biographical History
Katie was born into a Jewish family in Vienna and resided on an estate called Edmunshof in the state of Burgenland bordering Hungary. Her father, Ludwig, an agronomist, leased land from the Holy Cross Order and built a general farm there. Her mother, Greta, who grew up in Vienna in an affluent family, reluctantly moved to the countryside. Katie had one younger brother named Adi. 1938: Shortly after the annexation of Austria, the Gestapo arrested Katie’s father. Due to her mother’s great perseverance and a lot of money, she succeeded in getting him released from prison. However, he had to leave the country immediately. A short time later, the family joined her father on her uncle’s estate in Hungary. 1942-43: As antisemitism worsened, the family tried to become invisible in the village to no avail. One night, two members of the Hungarian Gestapo arrested them and took them to the national prison in Budapest. Eventually they were transferred to the Kistarcsa concentration camp outside Budapest. One day an announcement was made that young children who had relatives in Budapest could be sent to them. Her parents decided to send Katie and Adi to their aunt in Budapest, but instead they ended up in a children’s camp. 1944: The children were marched into the ghetto in Budapest ghetto. Katie’s father, who alternated between escaping Kistarcha and being rearrested, commandeered them out of the ghetto and brought them to their aunt’s apartment to momentary safety. Her building was one of Raoul Wallenberg’s “protected houses.” However, by the fall of 1944, the protection was no longer helpful, and Katie, her father, brother, and aunt were marched into the ghetto again. 1945: The Russians liberated the ghetto in February. Katie and her family returned to her aunt’s apartment. Her father immediately started searching for her mother who they thought was in a labor camp. He ultimately found her in a hospital in terrible condition and brought her home. Katie immigrated to the United States with her family in November 1948. She has two children and is a volunteer at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Katerina “Katie” Altenberg (Käte Engel)
Katie Altenberg was born Käte Engel into a Jewish family in Vienna , Austria in 1936. She and her younger brother Adolph (Adi) lived with their parents on a large estate called Edmundshof in the Austrian province of Burgenland bordering Hungary . They had family in Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. Her father, Ludwig, an agronomist, leased land from the Heiligenkreuz Abbey (Stift Heiligenkreuz; Abbey of the Holy Cross) and built a general farm there. Her mother, Greta (née Stösller), who grew up in Vienna in an affluent family, reluctantly moved to the countryside.
In March 1938, Nazi Germany annexed Austria, an event known as the Anschluss . Shortly afterwards, the Gestapo arrested Ludwig. Due to Greta’s great perseverance and a lot of money, she succeeded in getting him released from prison. However, Ludwig had to leave the country immediately. He fled across the border into neighboring Hungary in a hay wagon. A short time later, the family joined him on an uncle’s estate in Hungary.
Hungary was an ally of Nazi Germany. The Hungarian government passed its own antisemitic laws beginning in 1938. As antisemitism worsened, the family tried to become invisible in the Hungarian village to no avail. When Hungary attempted to make a separate peace with the Allied Powers, Germany occupied the country in March 1944.
