In the quest to discover the epitome of maritime luxury and distinction, the search for the Most Exclusive Yacht Clubs in America takes center stage. Owning a yacht is not merely a symbol of opulence; it is the initial stride towards securing a coveted position within the global elite. Yet, within this realm, it is widely acknowledged that membership in a prestigious yacht club holds equal, if not greater, significance than yacht ownership itself.

Consider the tale of Roman Abramovich, renowned for possessing one of the world's most opulent private jets and the most lavish yacht. Astonishingly, even these credentials failed to secure him entry into the inner sanctum of the British elite, who maintain their exclusivity with unwavering resolve. British yacht clubs, with their hallowed traditions, have long been revered as bastions of exclusivity. An example that stands out is the Royal Yacht Squadron, the world's most esteemed yacht club, which only admitted women as members in 2013, exemplifying the enduring barriers to entry even in the face of societal progress. Remarkably, this exclusivity extended even to Her Majesty the Queen, their patron, who, despite her regal association with the club, was not granted membership.

To identify the Most Exclusive Yacht Clubs in America, we embarked on a meticulous journey. Beginning with a thorough examination of the Platinum Clubs of America's esteemed listing of the finest yacht clubs in the United States, we elevated select candidates by acknowledging their triumphs in prestigious yachting events, including the illustrious America's Cup and the Resolute Cup, often hailed as the unofficial club championship of America in yachting. The culmination of our pursuit presents you with the ultimate showcase of yacht club exclusivity on American shores.

11. Southern Yacht Club

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana Founded: 1849

Southern Yacht Club suffered greatly from the Hurricane Katrina. The club house was severely damaged by the fire that broke during the storm and it had to be demolished. Unfortunately, a large number of priceless yachting artifacts were lost in the process. Still, the club survived and in 2009, the members celebrated 160 years since its founding. The club played an important role in New Orleans’ social life throughout its history and continues to do so. Southern Yacht Club organizes the Race to the Coast, one of the oldest yachting regattas in the Western hemisphere. Its members won 4 golden medals in the Summer Olympics for the United States.

10. Grosse Pointe Yacht Club

Location: Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan Founded: 1914

Founded by the group of 25 sailing enthusiasts in 1914, Grosse Pointe Yacht Club is located on the shores of Lake St. Clair. Its clubhouse, designed by Guy Lowell, is listed on National Register of Historic Places. Unfortunately, Lowell didn’t get to see his creation, since he died at sea before the building was finished. The most prominent feature is the 187-ft bell tower, which doubles as the radio far for sailors on Lake St. Clair. In 1997, in a survey among the managers of the yacht clubs across the United States, Grosse Pointe Yacht Club was named Number One Yacht Club in America.

9. Palm Beach Yacht Club

Location: Palm Beach, Florida Founded: 1890 (re-chartered 1911)

What started as a local association of enthusiasts to promote sailing on Intracoastal Waterway soon developed into one of the best yachting clubs in America. Among other amenities it offers to the members, Pal Palm Beach Yacht Club takes great pride in their restaurant, which won several prestigious international awards, like the Epicurean International Award, limited to just 100 restaurants on the planet.

8. Chicago Yacht Club

Location: Chicago, Illinois Founded: 1875

The Great Lakes offer some of the best freshwater sailings in the world and Chicago Yacht Club is taking full advantage of that fact. It hosts annual Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, which brings more than 3,000 sailors from the entire country to the shores of Lake Michigan and Chicago Harbor Lighthouse. Although often teased by the other clubs about their lack of saltiness, members of Chicago Yacht Club are very proud of their club and its achievements. Among notable members are Robert Halperin and William Parks, the bronze medalist from the 1960 Olympics.

7. Annapolis Yacht Club

Location: Annapolis, Maryland Founded: 1886

Annapolis, America’s Sailing Capital, is a home to a several yachting and boating clubs, but the premier spot goes to the Annapolis Yacht Club. Among other races, the club organizes the traditional Annapolis to Newport race, one of the most iconic races in America’s yachting history. Although the effects of a devastating fire that ravaged the clubhouse in 2015 are still visible, club’s 1600-strong membership body has come together to mend the disaster.

6. Newport Harbor Yacht Club

Location: Newport Beach, California Founded: 1916

Newport Harbor Yacht Club is one of the several premier clubs on the West coast. The club played a vital role in the development of Newport Beach throughout its history. Its clubhouse, built in 1919, is considered as one of the most important local landmarks and is one of the oldest clubhouses on our list. Despite several enlargements and reconstructions, it struggles to offer top notch service to the club’s members and plans for a new one are under development. In 1986, the club sent a crew to try and qualify for the next year’s America Cup, but unfortunately, they lost to the San Diego’s boat, which eventually won the Cup.

5. Carolina Yacht Club

Location: Charleston, South Carolina Founded: 1883

Located in the beautiful historic setting of Battery in Charleston’s downtown, Carolina Yacht Club looks like Scarlett O’Hara will come in any second accompanied by Captain Butler. The fact that the clubhouse is in the old cotton factor’s office, with Greek columns on the waterfront, only reinforces the impression of the Old South. Members like to boast that their club has the best yachting facilities on the East Coast. While there are quite a few clubs that would disagree, Caroline Yacht Club’s location with the access to Charleston Harbor is certainly among the best in the nation. It is one of the reasons for its high placement on our list of 11 most exclusive yacht clubs in America.

4. San Diego Yacht Club

Location: San Diego, California Founded: 1886

San Diego Yacht Club is one of the most prominent clubs in America’s yachting history. Its crews and boats won the America Cup two times, making it the only America club besides New York Yacht Club to take home the much-coveted Auld Mug. In their third attempt, they lost to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in 1995. It is also the original home of the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup, a prestigious regatta held annually since 1904. In order to provide its members with an excellent service, San Diego Yacht Club employs over 100 people in its clubhouse. The club runs one of the most successful youth programs in the country, which has a great appeal to members and wannabe members with kids.

3. The San Francisco Yacht Club

Location: Belvedere, California Founded: 1869

Founded in 1869, San Francisco Yacht Club is the oldest yachting club on the West Coast. The clubhouse was moved several times, until it finally settled in its current location, in Belvedere Cove, in 1926. The move split the membership and one group decided to form a new club, called St. Francis Yacht Club. Despite the controversy surrounding the relocation, it proved to be the right move, as Belvedere Cove is an excellent harbor and it allowed the club to create world-class amenities for its members and their guests. The clubhouse went through an extensive reconstruction in 2007, modernizing existing features and adding some new ones, in order to bring it up with the times.

2. St. Francis Yacht Club

Location: San Francisco Founded: 1927

Formed by the dissatisfied members of the San Francisco Yacht Club who opposed the move to Belvedere, St. Francis Yacht Club has quickly gained a reputation of a premier yacht club, often ranking higher than their rivals at the San Francisco Yacht Club, much to their chagrin. It is generally considered the most prestigious yacht club on the Western coast. One of the reasons for its popularity is the club’s location near the Golden Gate Bridge. Some of the most notable members include James David Zellerbach, Tom Blackaller, Pamela Healy, and Roy Disney.

The history of yacht clubs in the US dates back to the early 1800s when the first yacht club was established in New York. These clubs organize a range of events and programs that provide members with opportunities to learn and develop their sailing skills. Yacht clubs also play an important role in promoting conservation efforts and protecting the environment.

Choosing the Best Yacht Club

  • Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award 2023

A far cry from the exclusivity of real members’ only boating social clubs, irreverence is the name of the game at Denver’s Yacht Club, a self-proclaimed ‘anti-club club’ that bears the playful slogan: ‘Yachty by nature’. There, owners Mary Allison Wright and McLain Hedges aimed to combine three of their favorite types of drinking joints – cocktail bars, natural wine bars and dive bars – to achieve the ultimate hangout for locals and visitors alike. Thanks to its eco principles, Yacht Club is named the winner of the Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award 2023 . Located in North Denver’s historic Cole neighborhood, there is zero pretension at the casual bar, which many Coloradans consider the equivalent of their modern Cheers. Drinks-wise, the programme mixes an eclectic approach of high – they have a fortified wine bottle list, for example – and low (like the Old No. 7-11 combo, which is a Jack and Coke with a hot dog). Even the finest spirits find a home in quickie combinations, which also sometimes skew somewhat nautical, with drinks like the Frozen Banana Daiquiri and Champagne Mojito bringing breezy fun to the mix, and the ‘Soft Bangers’ section of the menu features a few alcohol-free options for non-imbibers.

Boating Traditions: America’s 100 Oldest Yacht Clubs

The development of yacht clubs in the 1800s is an important chapter of our boating and marina history in the U.S.—and tells us much about the country’s early yearning for nature and community.

The birth of organized boating, rowing, and sail-racing clubs in our country took place in the 1800s and many of these early yacht clubs are still in operation today.

If you’re a sailor, oarsman, or boater, you’re probably familiar with many yacht clubs around the country—but do you know which U. S. yacht clubs have the pedigree to lay claim to being the country’s oldest?

The first time I heard the phrase yacht club was during a weekend at our family camp on a lake in the Northern Tier of New York State, just outside Adirondack Park. As a boy, most of my weekends there were spent fishing, swimming, and boating, and at the neighboring marina I heard sailing stories about the St. Regis Lake Yacht Club, founded in 1897. (Not on the list here, it’s the 156th oldest yacht club in America.) I was and still am a powerboater—learning boating back then in an aluminum boat with a 7 1/2-hp outboard—but I was fascinated by the sailing stories I heard dating back to the turn of the 20th Century in New York’s Franklin County.

At Dockwa, our loose definition of a yacht club is:

  • Usually membership-owned and controlled by a board;
  • Can be exclusive, but many no longer are;
  • Can specialize in many different types of activities such as sailing, racing, cruising, and kids’ programs;
  • They do not always have paid employees and might be volunteer-based.

Many yacht clubs nationally use Dockwa as their dockage reservation-and-booking platform or for marina management. So recently we had some fun office chatter—because we all work remotely, it was actually digital direct messaging office chatter—about which of the country’s yacht clubs have been around the longest.

Without further ado, and giving a shout-out to International Burgee Registry , here is the list of the 100 oldest yacht clubs in the United States, in chronological order of their founding from one to 100, with links to those still operating.

10 of the best hotel pools in the US

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Is there anything better in life than spending a lazy day lounging in the sun by a pool? Probably not, unless your idea of the perfect pool day is floating in a larger-than-life lazy river or chasing your kiddos around a pool with a kid-friendly splash pad or wave pool.

Whatever your version of an ideal pool day is, it all starts with the swimming pool. Thankfully, here in the U.S., we have more incredible hotel pools than we could ever possibly write about.

That said, we have gathered a handful of our favorites from sea to shining sea. These include pools with knockout views you have to see to believe, ones with incredible cabanas and others that are just so fun and functional that you’ll never want to leave.

From the Las Vegas Strip to the theme parks of Orlando and everywhere in between, here are some of the best hotel pools in the U.S. to consider for your next trip.

Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Beach Club Resort

In Orlando , there’s no shortage of activities — and there’s certainly no shortage of pools.

One of the best in Orlando (and the country) can be found on the grounds of Disney World, shared between two Disney resorts: Disney’s Yacht Club and Beach Club. Called Stormalong Bay, this 3-acre pool complex is basically a water park complete with a trio of leisure pools (including a sand-bottom pool), a 230-foot-long waterslide, a lazy river and an elevated tanning area.

How to book: At two of the more expensive properties at Walt Disney World, rates easily reach over $500 a night. However, with the help of a free Disney vacation planner , you might be able to find a better deal.

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center

When we think about incredible pools, our minds don’t usually go straight to  indoor pools — unless you’re familiar with the luxe Four Seasons Philadelphia. On the 57th floor of the downtown Philly hotel, the 30,000-gallon infinity-edge pool is reserved exclusively for hotel guests and boasts some of the most incredible views of the city, all seen from the comfort of heated water.

It’s open all year long, so hotel guests can take in those stunning views or sit back with a healthy bento box meal delivered to their lounge chair even while it’s snowing outside.

How to book:  Though we’re hoping it’ll happen someday, Four Seasons still doesn’t have a loyalty program. Cash rates at the Four Seasons Philadelphia can be found from $1,000 a night during peak summer months. There is some good news, however: Four Seasons is a member of American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts , a program for holders of The Platinum Card® from American Express (and other Centurion- and Platinum-branded cards), that offers complimentary breakfast, guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout, upgrades and a $100 spa credit.

JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa

Everything’s bigger in Texas — and that’s exactly the case at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa.

There, guests will find more water action than at most resorts, including a 9-acre water park with multiple waterslides, a 1,100-foot lazy river, a kids pool with a zero-depth beach entry, an activity pool and even an adults-only pool. So, whatever your preferred vacation style, everyone who visits this Marriott Bonvoy-associated resort can find the perfect pool to beat the intense heat of Texas Hill Country.

How to book:  Cash rates at this JW Marriott start as low as $290 a night, though you’ll likely find more availability closer to $400 and above, with rates soaring to over $1,000 during peak travel periods. Marriott Bonvoy award nights start at 43,000 points a night, and if you act fast, there is still reward night availability for July and August.

Right now, with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card, you could earn 75,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points after using your card to spend $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first six months; plus, earn 50,000 bonus points after you stay six eligible paid nights at Marriott hotels through Jan. 31, 2024.

Resorts World Las Vegas

In Sin City, choosing a hotel based on its pool is an overwhelming experience because there are just so many great options.

Those trying to trade in some points for a stay at a property with one of those pools should look no further than Hilton’s Resorts World . It’s home to three different hotels in one massive complex: the Las Vegas Hilton, the Conrad Las Vegas and the luxury-focused Crockfords Las Vegas.

Related: The best hotel pools in Las Vegas

At the property’s 5 1/2-acre pool complex, located outside on the fifth floor, guests will find a handful of different pools to experience. That includes the large Main Pool, where guests can reserve daybeds with a dedicated server, side table, concierge, towel service and shade.

There’s also a Family Pool with rentable cabanas; the Bimini Pool with oversized games and activities; the Cabana Pool, where guests can rent cabanas with amenities like a television, refrigerator, coffee table and misting fan; and a VIP pool.

How to book:  Because there are three different Hilton Honors -associated hotels here, rates vary depending on where you want to stay. Rates at the Las Vegas Hilton start at $78 or 45,000-70,000 points per night. Rates at the Conrad can start at $95 or 39,000-80,000 points per night. Rates at Crockfords start at $259 or 88,000-95,000 points per night.

The West Hollywood Edition

If you want to take in sweeping views of Hollywood Hills and the Los Angeles skyline, there’s no better place to do it than from the pool at the celebrity-friendly West Hollywood Edition.

High in the hills, the pool offers wooden lounge chairs and lush greenery throughout to complement the stunning California sunsets and sunrises that are a must to take in while visiting this Marriott Bonvoy property. For food and drink, The Roof offers pool guests a wide arrange of drinks, including “tropical-inspired cocktails with Southern California flair” and an extensive list of tequilas and mezcals.

How to book: Cash rates for the West Hollywood Edition, including access to its rooftop pool, start at $568 a night. For folks with Marriott Bonvoy points to blow, nightly redemptions start at 68,500 points.

Fairmont Kea Lani

It’s tough to imagine sitting by a pool in Hawaii when you’re surrounded by the beauty of the ocean. However, at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui, it’s really not that hard because there are plenty of incredible pools.

At this all-suite Fairmont, there are two lagoon pools joined by a 140-foot waterslide, two whirlpools and a kids pool with a basketball hoop. There’s also an adults-only pool tucked away from the others.

Guests can rent cabanas around the three different main pools with access to chilled water, juices and sodas with the reservation, plus complimentary snacks. All guests can enjoy lunch and cocktails from Ko Restaurant and Ama Bar & Grill, as well as grab water toys and free sunscreen at the Pool Pavilion.

How to book: Rates at the Fairmont Kea Lani, the only Accor Live Limitless property on Maui, start at $1,009 a night. Read a review of the property, as well as reviews of TPG’s other favorite Maui properties .

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa

When it comes to swimming pools, Disney knows what it’s doing — that’s why it’s got two entries on this list. This time, we’re looking at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, one of the most popular hotels in all of Hawaii, especially for folks traveling with family.

Called the Waikolohe Valley pool area, this resort has something for everyone: pools with ocean views, a kids pool and the main Waikolohe pool, and an 8,200-square-foot zero-entry pool with a waterslide in a volcano. Hotel guests can rent cabanas, dine poolside and forget the outside world while splashing and relaxing under the big Hawaii sky.

How to book:  Cash rates at this top-tier Disney property don’t come cheap and are usually upward of $569 a night.

Related: Where Disney and Hawaii intersect: Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

Another contender from Las Vegas, the pools at The Cosmopolitan — a Marriott Bonvoy Autograph Collection property — are where people go to bake in the sun and the flashing lights of Las Vegas Boulevard.

Of the two pools, the Boulevard Pool reigns supreme with its fourth-floor location overlooking the Strip. Folks who head up to this pool deck can book cabanas with a server and complimentary fruit plate, or just opt for a daybed. The pool frequently features live entertainment and “dive-in” movies. However, you can always hit up the bar for a refreshing drink to cool down from the desert heat.

How to book: You can find cash rates at The Cosmopolitan for as low as $240 a night if you look hard and your dates are flexible. Vegas is famous for its fluctuating rates, though, so don’t be shocked if stays here cost upward of $500 a night on various weekends. The Cosmopolitan is also a Marriott Bonvoy resort with award availability starting at 75,000 points per night.

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge

There’s no skyline like the New York City skyline — and there’s really no better place to take it in than the rooftop pool at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge.

Located in Brooklyn Heights near the trendy DUMBO neighborhood, this hotel is prime Brooklyn real estate. However, the real star of the show is the pool. It’s reserved for hotel guests, but reservations are required and limited to two-hour slots. Food and drinks are served from Harriet’s Rooftop, which stays open even after the pool closes at 7 p.m.

Related: The best hotels in New York City, from luxury stays to points properties

How to book:  Rates at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge vary throughout the year. In the busy summer months, rooms start around $400 a night during weekdays but can climb to over $600 on weekends.

The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa

Another resort with a pool area that doubles as a water park, the Westin Kierland in Scottsdale, Arizona, is the perfect place to take the kids (or kids at heart) to enjoy a day basking in the sun, splashing in the water and racking up some Marriott Bonvoy points along the way.

At Adventure Water Park, guests can ride a 110-foot waterslide, float along a lazy river or try a surfing simulator that feels more California than Arizona desert. You can rent a cabana to get a little shade or reserve a Tommy Bahama Relaxation Reef that’s basically a private island right in the middle of it all. If that’s just too much, the adults-only pool is the ideal spot for folks to relax without a child in sight.

How to book: In the very hot summer months, you can find rooms as low as $229. As the Phoenix area cools down in the fall, rates go up significantly, easily upward of $500 a night. Award nights can be found as low as 41,000 points per night and as high as 60,000 points per night.

SPONSORED:  With states reopening, enjoying a meal from a restaurant no longer just means curbside pickup.

And when you do spend on dining, you should use a credit card that will maximize your rewards and potentially even score special discounts. Thanks to temporary card bonuses and changes due to coronavirus, you may even be able to score a meal at your favorite restaurant for free.

These are the best credit cards for dining out, taking out, and ordering in to maximize every meal purchase.

Lewis Ludlam shouts instructions during the Northampton Saints training session

French connections: the forces driving English rugby’s Top 14 exodus

England internationals are flocking to France – and it’s a win-win situation for the players and the clubs

A nother week, another England international confirming a move to the Top 14. Kyle Sinckler will join Lewis Ludlam in swapping the Premiership for Toulon, taking the number of players from England’s World Cup squad who will be turning out in France next season to nine. Should Billy Vunipola complete a move to Montpellier it will be double figures and if brother Mako joins him then France’s top two divisions will be just a scrum-half shy of a full XV who represented England at either the 2019 or the 2023 World Cup. By anyone’s standards it is an unprecedented direction of travel.

It is not as if this raft of players are trailblazers – Rob Andrew’s stint at Toulouse in the early 90s shows that Englishmen have been making the move across the Channel since even before the advent of professionalism – but it is the sheer numbers as well as their profile. The Rugby Football Union’s decision to prevent anyone playing outside England pulling on the red rose jersey in 2012 was made to ensure that on the back of Jonny Wilkinson’s success story at Toulon there was not a flood of players who followed but it seems powerless to stop the nouvelle vague .

While it is true to say that a lot of those making the move are the wrong side of 30, players whose international careers were coming to a natural end and who would probably not be offered “enhanced” contracts by the RFU next season, there are too many exceptions to consider that a rule. Owen Farrell is the highest profile departure but Henry Arundell, Joe Marchant and Jack Willis are all players with their best years ahead of them. Those will sting most for the RFU.

The former England centre Jamie Noon finished his career with stints at Brive and then Tulle and since then has been employed as an agent in France. As a result he is better placed than most to assess the growing number following in his footsteps and he finds it striking how it is the players themselves, rather than the French clubs, who are engineering the moves.

“The French clubs are open to getting quality players but it seems that there is more interest from the UK to get to France,” Noon tells the Guardian. “Sometimes when a player has been released, they think: ‘I’ll just go to France and make more money.’ It doesn’t work like that. This year more than ever there has been some genuine quality players who are looking to come to France. It’s people who aren’t even necessarily out of contract, Owen has cut his contract to move so there’s a real desire there to do something different.”

Looking for reasons behind the exodus and some are obvious. The World Cup cycle is still relatively new and someone like Arundell may yet return to England in time to make the squad for the 2027 tournament. The financial benefits are clear, too, and perhaps more pertinently the security offered with the demises of London Irish, Wasps and Worcester still reverberating. The fact that Premiership clubs are now allowed just one marquee player is also significant as well as an appreciation that careers are short.

Owen Farrell in action for Saracens

“Japan is the wealthiest league in the world so players will make the most money over there but in terms of transition and adaptation, France is that little bit easier,” adds Noon. “The money is good, there are benefits associated with that and the league is competitive. The French leagues have got a financial police in place, they have to account for their money at the start of the season, they have to be able to prove they’ve got all this money coming in to be able to offer the players these contracts. So it’s definitely safer.

“And the big thing about French contract offers is that they get accommodation included. There are also tax breaks, so you pay less tax or there are tax benefits if you’re married, if you have children. You can get something called impatriation , which helps with your tax allowance as well – that’s pretty interesting, especially compared to the rates in the UK.”

To look at things purely in cold, hard, economic terms is too simplistic, however. “It’s also a beautiful place to be, the whole French lifestyle, the rugby is very competitive and to be able to test yourself at that level is definitely very appealing to someone who has still got that desire to be competitive and really push the boundaries,” says Noon.

“This year more than ever players are a little bit more open to exploring and also not naive to think they’re going to be playing this level of rugby forever and if they can cash in, maybe they cash in earlier. Or they just want to do something different. I can speak from experience, changing scenery is refreshing.”

To pose the question another way, why are the French clubs so happy to welcome ageing Englishmen into a league that is the most prosperous in Europe? The answer may lie thousands of miles away because it requires only a cursory glance at the squad lists to see how many leading All Blacks and Springboks – the kind of players who would once have headed to France – are instead making for Japan. That in turn makes English players a more attractive proposition for the Top 14.

after newsletter promotion

Jack Willis in action for Toulouse

“The French clubs like a name, they like a CV with lots on there,” says Noon. “That’s the presidents as well – they want to offer something to their supporters. It’s definitely something that they’re conscious of. They also know that in terms of being able to get the best players to France, Japan at the moment seems to be winning that battle.

“So the fact that England is just a stone’s throw away, it works pretty well. It’s not like instead of going to get a Kiwi or a South African, they’re going to the basement bucket. These guys are still world class and still operating at a similar level.”

To date there has been little pushback from within France, no complaints about an English invasion though it was telling to hear the LNR president Rene Bouscatel say back in December that “it’s good news for the attractivity of our leagues, but it’s not necessarily good news for rugby long term in general”. There is also a salary cap in France as well as rules which encourage clubs to select homegrown players. Accordingly, Noon strongly advises against anyone planning to head to France simply to line their pockets in the twilight of their career.

“I say this to a lot of players who we move over here, the French approach to rugby and culture and philosophy is different to the UK,” he adds. “You do have to come open minded, to come with a desire to learn the way they do it and to buy into it. Sometimes it’s very different, sometimes it feels a bit wacky but if you go with it then they appreciate it and they also respect you a little bit more. Instead of coming and trying to change things or complain, if you knuckle down and work hard on the language which will help in general day-to-day life as well as within the team, they’ll love you for it.”
