Founded in 1952, the St Croix Yacht Club is located on a sensational sandy beach on Teague Bay in the US Virgin Islands, facing the Buck Island National Park. Covering nearly 6 acres, the manicured grounds of the club are host to a fleet of both sailing and motorized vessels and a membership capacity of 500. The open air club house, on a white sandy beach at the foot of our dock, lends itself to the sounds of the ocean and cool tropical breezes. Way back in the 1930s, competitive sailing on St. Croix started to develop when a friend of Anton Teytaud (a founder of the St. Croix Yacht Club) built a Snipe from plans published in Rudder Magazine. Anton then purchased another Snipe in Puerto Rico so that there could be some spirited racing between the two every Sunday. A class of similar boats grew to four and a competition with St. Thomas Snipe sailors was undertaken. Unfortunately the St. Croix sailors were thoroughly beaten both at home and over at St. Thomas. Not to be daunted, Teytaud acquired a larger craft and organized races with the Gallows Bay fishermen in Christiansted harbor and in Frederiksted with fishermen of the West End.

In 1940, Teytaud purchased a Comet and joined the Club Nautico of San Juan to be able to race there. He earned a fifth place in the Midwinter Comet Regatta, which was won by the national champion of the class. (By 1965, representing the St. Croix Yacht Club, Teytaud won first place in San Juan for this regatta, beating the same national champion).

• Sailing to St Croix

St Croix’s rich culture and history, along with its beautiful beaches and world-class recreational activities, create an experience unlike any other in the Caribbean. Since Christopher Columbus first arrived at Salt River on St Croix Virgin Islands over 500 years ago, sugar and rum have shaped the island’s life and land. Fifty-four sugar mills, each with imposing windmill towers and factory chimneys, still rest in the shadows of stately eighteenth-century and nineteenth-century homes.

The climate on the island is generally sunny, hot, and breezy with passing clouds. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 72°F to 88°F. Rain showers are common.

Places to See

• Christiansted for the beach as well as culture. Shop, dine and visit historic places such as Fort Christianvaern, the Customs House, and the Old Scale House.
• St. George Village Botanical Garden in Frederiksted . Stroll this former sugarcane plantation with its varied ecosystems.
• Estate Whim Plantation . The oldest sugar plantation museum in the Virgin Islands. When visiting, see exhibits and take a guided tour. See the Great House, cookhouse, privy/bathhouse, three kinds of cane processing mills (animal, wind, and steam), a watchhouse, a carriage house, and several other foundations such as the workers’ houses and factories.
• Mt Pellier Domino Club and have lunch and a beer with the resident pigs. Of course, theirs is non-alcoholic.
• Visit an art museum. Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted is dedicated to preserving, promoting , and exhibiting the arts of the Caribbean community.
• Check out the St Croix Buccaneer Resort Swim Event . If you feel like a swimmer, you can join the competition, too (just for fun)!

Things to Do | St Croix

• Get healthy . The island is a growing health and wellness destination. In fact, the island has more vegan cafes, juice bars, and organic farms than all the other Virgin Islands combined.
• Horseback ride . You can go for a leisurely trail ride along the North Shore or even a horseback ride in the water . Horseback Riding is also available for all ages.
• Taste local rum . Cruzan Rum has been distilled in the area since 1760. This dark rum had always been distilled using locally grown sugar cane, but to meet global demand, Cruzan now uses sugar cane molasses imported from other countries such as South America. Check their website for tour details.
• Dine . Besides a variety of restaurants, St Croix Virgin Islands also has some great food trucks . Try Nidulari for handmade bakery goods and a diverse menu consisting of local fare, Indian curries, British-influenced dishes, and Southern comfort food. Vegan and GF options, too.
