I came late to the best horror audiobooks. Part of my upbringing made me too scared of horror to find it appealing. Now, let me explain that, before you start thinking I was raised in a horror house, or had a traumatic childhood. None of that.
I was raised in a small village, where evil-eye and ghost tales were told with almost the same certainty most people use to talk about science. People laugh about it, and dismiss it, but at the end of the day, they also believe those unlikely tales to be true.
One of the most famous ghost stories going around in my family is the one where my grandfather, coming home at the late hours of a pitch dark night—there were no street lamps at the time—had an encounter with a spirit. My grandfather and the spirit got into a verbal fight, which ended when my grandfather—in fear—farted the spirit away. I wish I was joking.
But there are many more of these stories, with less comical elements, and while my rational nature wants to dismiss them as just figments of imagination, probably aided by other types of (liquid) spirits, and lack of knowledge of the basic laws of physics, some of them are too incredible not to believe in.
As much as possible, I try to stay away from things which keep me awake at night; I’m not a fan of horror movies in general, but paranormal movies are a no-no. I found out, however, that while I can’t watch horror, I can read it, and I actually enjoy it. I can better control my imagination when I’m being described things (even pretty scary things), than when I’m actually being shown those scary things (and, let’s face it, the scariest part of horror movies is the soundtrack, which always keeps me on edge).
I’ve started getting into the horror genre through books, and the best horror audiobooks are a fantastic in-between: they still allow me to get a little bit scared, but not so scared that I get night terrors.
The Best Horror Audiobooks
Now that Halloween is gone for this year (although we might debate that the whole of 2020 was a horror show in itself) maybe now is the best time to immerse yourself into some of the best horror audiobooks out there. Here is a list we have enjoyed, old and new, and we hope you will too.

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher, Narrated by Hillary Huber
What are the worst things you can discover when you agree to clear out the house of a deceased family member? This is exactly what you are invited to find out in this book.
Mouse agrees to clear out her grandmother’s house after her passing, but things start going south after she bumps into her step-grandfather’s journal, which at first seems to contain senseless ramblings, but quickly end up making terrible sense to Mouse.
All alone with her dog, Mouse finds she has to take these horrors head on.

When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole, Narrated by Susan Dalian & Jay Aeseng
I know this is not horror per se, but a thriller, but this booked scared the hell out of me because it feels so real. Honestly, almost up until the end, none of what was being told seemed exaggerated, or fictional.
More than scare me, it made me angry, but I absolutely loved it, and even wished my bike rides to and from work were longer, so I could listen just a little more.
I don’t want to spoil this book for anyone, but it is a story about the horrors of gentrification. That’s really all you should know before starting it.

The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones, Narrated by Shaun Taylor-Corbett
The way animals and revenge are intertwined in this story, it really made me think of Drive Your Plow Over The Bones Of The Dead by Olga Tokarczuk, which I read for a book club this year and loved.
This book follows the story of four American Indian men who, ten years prior, had gotten carried away on the last day of hunting. Now those terrible past events, and their own culture and traditions, come back to haunt them.
The narrator, Shaun Taylor-Corbett is, like the author, also Blackfeet.

Red Pill by Hari Kunzru, Narrated by the Author
If imposter syndrome was a book, this would be it.
The narrator of this book receives a prestigious writing fellowship, but when he arrives in Germany, he realises he can’t write anymore (if this is not any writer’s nightmare, I don’t know what is).
Unable to do much more than going on walks and watching a violent cop show on TV, he starts doubting the value of his writing and achievements.
The story ends up focusing on the mental struggle of being able to identify what is real and what is not.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Narrated by Frankie Corzo
Did this book give me The Haunting Of Hill House vibes throughout? Yes.
It reads so well; the main character, Noemí, is very interesting, and the book even includes a family with a tragic past, and a house on top of a misty hill. Noemí is clever, and self-assured, and a bit cheeky.
This story starts with a letter that Catalina, Noemí’s cousin, has sent to Noemí’s father, claiming that she is being poisoned.
Noemí hasn’t seen Catalina since she married Virgil and moved to High House, so at the request of her father, she travels there to try and figure out if Catalina needs psychiatric help. But weird things start happening, and the true mystery surrounding the house is probably far from anything you can imagine.

Leave The World Behind by Rumaan Alam, Narrated by Marin Ireland
This is Alam’s third novel, a vacation gone to horror, which discusses race, class, and parenthood.
Amanda, Clay, and their teenage kids go on a family vacation into a remote place in Long Island, but, as they are about to get settled in the luxurious house they had rented, an older Black couple claiming to own the house comes knocking at their door: a sudden blackout has swept the city, they tell them.
Without any access to the news, the couple doesn’t know what to believe, whom to trust, or what exactly happened in New York.

The Year Of The Witching by Alexis Henderson, Narrated by Brianna Colette
For those looking for witch stories, this is a perfect listen.
Immanuelle does everything she can to conform to the values of the place she lives in, a way to make-up for the unruly life her mother chose to live.
When she accidentally ends up in the forbidden Darkwood of the land’s prophet, Bethel, where four witches were first chased and killed, she finds her mother’s diary, and she starts understanding that the church she has placed so much trust in, might be very different from what she always believed it to be.

Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth, Narrated by Xe Sands
Gothic, academia, sapphic romance. Need I say more?
At the Bookhants School For Girls, Flo and Clara meet each other, and they are both obsessed with the writer Mary McLane, best known for her scandalous memoir. They decide to create their own private book club, and name it The Plain Bad Heroines Society.
The school closes its doors five years after the bodies of Flo and Clara are found next to a copy of McLane’s memoir, and after three more people mysteriously die at the school.
Over a century later, Merritt Emmons writes a bestselling book about the institution, and the school opens their doors once more, to give way to the film adaptation.
Past and present intertwine, and strange things start happening at Bookhants again, proving that some places are better left untouched.

The Elementals by Michael McDowell, Narrated by R.C. Bray
If you can’t get enough of horror centred around weird houses and family secrets, this is the book for you.
When the McCrays and the Savages, two families connected by marriage, come to Beldame hoping to have a rest after a funeral and a divorce, strange things start happening.
They came to the place to spend time on their own, but they are certainly not alone.

The Haunting Of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, Narrated by Bernadette Dunne
Although I haven’t yet listened to this book in audio, I was assured that it is very, very scary.
Shirley Jackson is amazing at writing stories with unexpected elements. In The Haunting Of Hill House , a group of people move into Hill House to try and figure out the weird events that have taken place there across the years.
Four strangers, a house with its own will, it is brilliantly written.
You can’t go wrong with Shirley Jackson.

The Good House by Tananarive Due, Narrated by Robin Miles
Angela Toussaint has lost her son to suicide, and she is trying to rebuild her law practice.
When Angela returns to the family home, looking for clues that might shed some light on her son’s suicide, she comes across a strange violent force which is acting upon the locals.

Harvest Home by Thomas Tyron, Narrated by Jonathan Yen
You could go with any horror novel written by Thomas Tyron and still get it right but, personally, I think Harvest Home is the one with the best audio narration.
In this horror novel a family moves into Cornwall Combe, an isolated village in Connecticut.
The village seems to have stopped in time; with various festivals centred in the harvesting of corn, they have renounced any modern tools for their agriculture, and keep little contact with the rest of the world.
To the Constantine family, Cornwall Combe seems like the perfect place to have a home, but they are soon proven wrong.

Wonderland by Zoje Stage, Narrated by Xe Sands
The Bennetts leave New York and move to a rural farmhouse. Life there seems promising: plenty of room in the house, in a place which is still close enough to the urban area.
But the woods surrounding the house hide secrets deep within, and the family dream very quickly turns into the most unsettling of nightmares.

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand, Narrated by Lauren Ezzo
On the island of Sawkill Rock, girls have been disappearing for decades, and no one has dared fight the evil who’s been taking them up, until now.
Marion, Zoey, and Val form a diverse group, and their personal stories are as intriguing as the outside world bringing them together.
This is a very atmospheric book, and Lauren Ezzo’s narration is a wonder.

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver, Narrated by Jeremy Northam
The year is 1937. John is poor and alone, and war is building up.
When he is given a chance to join an Arctic expedition, John takes it and embarks, filled with high hopes, amongst a crew of men and huskies.
Soon the dark claims the land, and when John’s companions are forced to leave one at a time, he is faced with a tough decision. As leaving becomes more and more difficult, John realises that in that remote place, other things besides himself, are lurking in the darkness.

The Hunger by Alma Katsu, Narrated by Kirsten Potter
This is another horror story where people start disappearing, this time from the mountains. The twist, though, and what is assured to give you a few sleepless nights, is that it is based upon true events.
The Donner Party was a group of pioneers who migrated to California. During their trip, an almost unbelievable set of things went wrong, and they ended up stranded, in the winter, in the Sierra Nevada. Cannibalism ensues.
Katsu gives this real story a darker twist, and the audiobook is *chef’s kiss*. (Did I really need to add a culinary meme to a story which involves cannibalism? Absolutely.)

The Shining by Stephen King, Narrated by Campbell Scott
I really needed to include some obvious ones in this list, because they’re obvious for a reason: they’re good.
For those who somehow have missed what the plot of this book is about across the many adaptations it has had, it tells the story of Jack Torrence, who finds a perfect excuse for a fresh start with his wife and kid when he takes in a new position at the Overlook Hotel.
The hotel becomes closed off from the rest of the world as the winter settles in, and although unsettling things begin to happen, Torrence’s 5-year-old seems to be the only one noticing. But not for long.
Although I, personally, didn’t find the book terrifying, the audiobook does manage to be quite chilling.

Psycho by Robert Bloch, Narrated by Richard Powers
Hotels don’t necessarily need to be remote to be scary, and this is proven in Psycho.
Mary Crane is lost and desperately in need of rest. The neon sign of a hotel has never seemed so inviting, so when the Bates Motel comes into view, Mary is relieved at the prospect of a bed to lay on.
The manager of the motel is a bit odd, but the world is filled with odd people, and although the motel isn’t luxurious, it is enough to help her feel a little better. But someone is paying attention to her, more closely than she knows.
This is the novel which inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s film, and it’s very thrilling in audio too.

Kill the tedious sound effects
Mr Fry’s reading voice is as always, engaging and mellifluous, and really doesn’t need the assistance of amateur hour sound effects. At one point the same recording of a scream is played multiple times within the same story, lending it an unintentional Pythonesque quality (viz. the Holy Grail coconuts scene), without actually raising the ghost of a laugh. Sadly, this is a rather uninspired and hackneyed selection of soporific stories. Meh.

Fry excellent
Stephen fry is excellent, but the chosen stories are not quite there. Could have been scarier if the language was changed to suit a modern audience

Absolutely wonderful stories made even better by Fry’s sensational storytelling and narration. Fry’s ability to draw you so deeply into every story is beyond compare.

Stephen Fry is excellent at telling the stories, just a shame the stories are rubbish and boring

Atmospheric to the max, Stephen Fry is a pleasure to listen to even when terrifying us

Another Amazing outing by Stephen. However there was some minor mispronunciation during "The Body Snatchers" Despite the spelling, Penicuik should be pronounced as "Penicook" and Auchenclinny should be "said and spelled "Auchendinny". Just some minor grievances from someone who grew up in the area. Those aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this and would definitely recommend.

- Mel Silvester
I haven't listened to any ghost stories before. but I really enjoyed these. I could listen to Stephen Fry's voice all day. I've even got my son listening! More please!

When you’re in the mood for a really good scare, a well-crafted horror novel is often the best place to turn. While movies and TV shows might reach a wider audience, frequent horror readers know that the written word is practically unmatched when it comes to delivering potent chills. Perhaps that’s because the reader is forced to use their own imagination to fill in all the nightmarish details that the writer conjures up in prose. Reading a terrifying novel provokes an unconscious response in us that even the best films seldom achieve, and because of that, the scares cut deeper and the fear lasts longer.
Naturally, the same principle holds true for horror audiobooks. In a way, hearing an expert narrator read a creepy novel aloud from cover to cover recalls the feeling of sitting around a crackling camp fire at night, listening to spooky stories about hook-handed killers and ghostly hitchhikers. There’s something elemental about that type of old-fashioned oral storytelling that works especially well when it comes to tales of terror.
So if you’re the market for a shiver, here are a dozen horror audiobooks that are guaranteed to chill your blood. Rather than focus on obvious modern masters like Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Clive Barker, or classic authors like Bram Stoker and H.P. Lovecraft, we’ve instead selected an assortment of books by writers that might be a bit less familiar, but no less terrifying.
‘The Shuddering’ by Ania Ahlborn
In literature more than film, monsters get a bad rap. While popular movies like “A Quiet Place” and Bong Joon Ho’s “The Host” reap universal praise, novels about slithering beasts and gooey mutants rarely end up on best of the year lists. And that’s unfortunate for author Ania Ahlborn, whose novel “The Shuddering” was easily one of the most heart-stopping reads of 2013 and deserved to be included alongside the top titles of that year. When twin siblings Ryan and Jane Adler head to a remote mountain cabin in Colorado with some friends and get snowed in after a storm, the worst they expect is some temporary claustrophobia. But that’s only because they don’t yet realize they’re being watched by a forest full of misshapen humanoid creatures whose twisted bodies and jagged teeth are enough to drive you insane on sight. That is, before they rip you apart limb from limb. For the book’s audio edition, skilled voice actor Luke Daniels brings Ahlborn’s ghastly story to life with his superb narration.
‘The Auctioneer’ by Joan Samson
Joan Samson’s shattering 1976 masterpiece “The Auctioneer” deserves to be taught in schools along with the unsettling works of Shirley Jackson, Flannery O’Connor and Cormac McCarthy. One of the finest examples of 20th Century American fiction that you probably haven’t heard of, “The Auctioneer” tells the story of a tightly knit farming community in rural New Hampshire that falls under the spell of a charismatic traveling auctioneer who sets out to improve the town by gathering donated items from the locals and then auctioning them off publicly to raise funds for the police department. Yet what begins as a seemingly innocuous request for old clothes and broken furniture doesn’t stop there. As the insidious auctioneer and his starry-eyed followers demand more and more items for auction, lives are destroyed and violence explodes. A chilling sociopolitical allegory tucked inside a remarkable horror novel, Samson’s macabre tale will make you wish she’d written a second book. Sadly, this was her only one.
‘The Invited’ by Jennifer McMahon
Hot take: ghost stories work much better on the page than they do on the screen. Just think about the best examples of the literary subgenre – “The Signal-Man,” “The Turn of the Screw,” “The Haunting of Hill House” – and what springs to mind instantly is their ominous atmosphere and foreboding menace rather than extreme visual shocks. Bestselling author Jennifer McMahon understands that perfectly, and her spine-tingling 2019 novel “The Invited,” about a couple that unwittingly build a haunted house from scratch on an unholy plot of land in Vermont, just might be the eeriest ghost story of the last decade. Effortlessly alternating from scenes set in the distant past to the horrors of the present day, McMahon’s book is part supernatural thriller, part historical mystery. For the audio edition, narrators Amanda Carlin and Justine Eyre conjure up McMahon’s prose like sorceresses bringing a malevolent spirit to life.
‘The Troop’ by Nick Cutter
Picture “Re-Animator” director Stuart Gordon helming an adaptation of “Lord of the Flies” and you might begin to get an idea of the nightmare you’re in store for when you listen to the audio edition of Nick Cutter’s savage 2014 novel “The Troop.” The story of five unlucky teenage boy scouts and their adult scoutmaster whose weekend on a remote island in the Canadian wilderness turns into a gruesome fight for survival, Cutter’s award-winning book is perfect for fans of Scott Smith’s “The Ruins” and Eli Roth’s “Cabin Fever.” What makes this twisted tale of science-run-amok so memorable is how the author balances psychological suspense with jaw-dropping scenes of body horror that would make David Cronenberg wince in revulsion.
‘Burnt Offerings’ by Robert Marasco
If you’ve read and enjoyed classics like “The Exorcist,” “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Amityville Horror,” then by all means give the audio edition of Robert Marasco’s disturbing thriller “Burnt Offerings” a listen. The basis for the 1976 film adaptation starring Karen Black and Oliver Reed, this story of an innocent family that rents a beautiful historic mansion on Long Island for the summer starts off warmly enough, but it gradually burrows its way beneath the reader’s skin as the house begins to affect the characters’ minds and personalities in sinister ways. If you’ve ever set foot in an unfamiliar location and felt a disquieting sense of unease wash over you for no apparent reason, imagine that feeling sustained for an entire novel, until it erupts in a grisly climax of shocking horror. Haunted house stories don’t get much scarier than this one.
‘The Hollow Places’ by T. Kingfisher
When hilariously snarky Kara – a.k.a. Carrot to her pals – agrees to lend a hand at her uncle’s quirky museum of oddities, she doesn’t expect to do much more than dust the vast collection of taxidermied animals on display. But when she discovers an impossibly deep hole in the wall on second floor that defies the laws of physics, curiosity gets the best of her and she enlists the help of a friendly neighborhood barista to explore the mist-shrouded alternate dimension. Big mistake! You see, this otherworldly portal leads to the dwelling ground of They, a bizarre race of mind-reading monsters with a nasty habit of skinning interlopers alive. In “The Hollow Places,” award-winning author T. Kingfisher deftly blends humor and horror, and incorporates some wildly impressive worldbuilding to create a dark urban fantasy that will delight fans of Neil Gaiman and China Miéville.
‘Rock & Roll Nightmares: Gory Days’ edited by Staci Layne Wilson
If listening to an entire 11-hour audiobook sounds a bit daunting, but you’re still in the market for a solid scare, then a bite-size horror anthology might be just the ticket to terror you’re looking for. And for readers who grew up rocking out to ‘80s bands like Dokken, Stryper, and Mötley Crüe, this brand new collection of short horror fiction edited by Staci Layne Wilson couldn’t be a better choice. Featuring 10 music-themed stories penned by talented authors like Mark Wheaton, Darren Gordon Smith, and Brenda Thatcher, “Gory Days” more than lives up to its lurid title. It’s “MTV’s Headbangers Ball” meets “Tales from the Crypt”; meaning it’s perfect entertainment for anyone who’s ever played “Stairway to Heaven” backwards to hear the mumbled phrase “Here’s to my sweet Satan.”
‘The Lost Village’ by Camilla Sten
Obsessed with the strange history of the abandoned town where her grandmother once lived as a child, a documentary filmmaker gathers a small crew together to investigate the 60-year-old mystery in Swedish author Camilla Sten’s hair-raising international bestseller “The Lost Village.” Combining aspects of “The Blair Witch Project” with the “Silent Hill” series, Sten’s enthralling thriller packs a wicked punch once the naïve characters finally realize they’re not alone in the titular deserted mining town. If the scene when they hear a malicious chuckle come over their walkie-talkies while lost in the middle of nowhere doesn’t fill you with dread, it’s probably time to seek professional help. Best of all, after her tension-filled set-up, Sten actually sticks the landing with a truly satisfying denouement. For the audio edition, Angela Dawe’s evocative narration is one of the best we’ve ever heard.
‘The Totem’ by David Morrell
Best known for creating the character John Rambo in his sensational debut novel “First Blood,” author David Morrell has penned acclaimed books in all types of genres; from spy fiction to Westerns to mysteries and historical thrillers. Originally published in 1979, “The Totem” was Morrell’s first foray into the horror genre, and it’s a doozy. Set in a sleepy mountain community in rural Wyoming, the book opens with a local sheriff investigating a series of gory livestock mutilations attributed to either wild dogs or cougars. But as the animal deaths increase in ferocity each night and the townspeople start acting strangely violent, it’s clear that something terrifying is happening in Potter’s Field… something possibly related to the long abandoned hippie commune in the nearby woods. Agonizingly suspenseful in its first half and viscerally horrifying in its second, once “The Totem” sinks its teeth into you, it never lets go.
‘The Policy’ by Bentley Little
If you’ve ever found yourself at the mercy of an insurance agency whose labyrinthine rules and convoluted regulations make you wonder if Satan himself is the CEO, then you’ll definitely relate to the characters in the indescribably surreal thriller “The Policy.” Imagine for a minute that you’re approached by a weirdly grinning door-to-door insurance agent who wants to sell you a policy against losing your job or being wrongly imprisoned. That’s what happens to this book’s protagonists when they move to a new home in Tucson, AZ. Yet as strange as those insurance policies might sound, they get much more disturbing each day, and refusing the offered coverage has deadly results. With brilliant horror novels like “The Policy,” “The Store,” “The Mailman” and “The Association” to his credit, no author is better at turning life’s mundane annoyances into skin-crawling terror than Bentley Little.
‘Cover’ by Jack Ketchum
The late author Jack Ketchum may not have become a household name like some of his more illustrious contemporaries, but he remains a giant in the world of literary horror. Best remembered for controversial classics like “The Girl Next Door” and “Off Season,” Ketchum’s lesser-known works are every bit as frightening, and his harrowing 1987 novel “Cover” is a prime example. Set in the remote wilderness, the story centers on a severely traumatized Vietnam veteran living off the grid, whose encounter with a group of weekend campers leads to unimaginable tragedy. Recalling James Dickey’s classic “Deliverance” at times, what makes this riveting tale so powerful is the empathy Ketchum clearly has for the book’s battle-scarred soldier. Rather than paint the character as Jason Voorhees with PTSD, Ketchum shows us the man behind the madness, which makes “Cover” a truly unforgettable work of art.
‘The Rats’ by James Herbert
James Herbert’s wonderfully grotesque novel about hungry mutant rats that terrorize London captured the imagination of hardcore horror fans around the world when it was published in 1974. In fact, the book proved so wildly popular, it spawned two sequels and a (not very good) film adaptation. Relentlessly paced and overflowing with some of the grisliest rat attack scenes ever imagined, Herbert’s novel purposefully straddles the line of good taste at times, and often leaps right in to sheer unadulterated insanity. Although the characters are as thin as a rodent’s whisker and the plot basically amounts to people being gnawed to death, readers with a sick sense of humor and a strong stomach will find “The Rats” a terrifying and tasty treat.

Best thing I've ever seen a company willingly do
I listened to the previously recorded version and it was okay but Harry and Marsters are just one in the same. That is the Harry you want to spend time with. When Audible re-recorded the book with James Marsters and then released it to fans for free - that is the most astounding thing I have seen a company / author ever do. Bravo! Way to encourage customer loyalty. This is really walking the talk.

Thank you Audible! It was an extremely pleasant surprise when Audible notify me this book was re-recorded with James Marsters. I love the Dresden Files series but it's just not the same without James's narration.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. Having a series interrupted by a different reader is such an unpleasant experience and this one was the worst (not because the narrator was bad, just because James Marsters is so much a part of the Dresden Files). Thank you for listening and for giving up the new recording for free, I would have happily paid for it!

James Marsters is irreplaceable
Even though this audiobook has already been published with an experienced, skilled narrator, and that narration is OK, I chose to repurchase this Ghost Story because I enjoy James Marsters narration. I've enjoyed his work even when I had to buy them on CD. He is after all the voice of Harry Dresden, so it seemed pleasant to have this title in his voice. But WOW!! I had taken James Marsters skill for granted. I had not realized his ability to give a voice to such a broad range of characters, a voice which reflects the personality of the characters as each is written, and still voice an intelligent sense of the ridiculous even in the darkest parts of the story. Of course Jim Butcher had to write these characters clearly enough to give Mr. Marsters the material to work with, and Ghost Story is a pivotal novel in the Harry Dresden story, but even with material as good as this, the other narrator did not bring it to life the way James Marsters has. John Glover did a good job, its just that James Marsters is brilliant, and the contrast is amazing. Sorry, gushing here, about the narrator, because the book has already been thoroughly reviewed. So if you've waited to listen to the audiobook until James Marsters could read it, good move. If you have already listened to the other narrator, its worth a credit or the cash to purchase this one too.

Thanks Audible!
Would you consider the audio edition of Ghost Story to be better than the print version?
Yes. James Marsters adds an additional dimension.
What did you like best about this story?
That James Marsters is the narrator instead of John Glover! Thanks Audible for re-recording this title with JM! Aside from that, I liked that Harry is more of a detective in this story. Also, he has to deal with what happens to and with his friends in his absence. I didn't see the ending coming, but it totally fit!
Have you listened to any of James Marsters’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes...all of his Harry Dresden as well as the Greyfriar trilogy. I personally think that Jim Butcher writes better books. I wouldn't have made it as far as I did with that trilogy if JM weren't the narrator, but that story just wasn't that good and there's only so much that JM could add.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
A number of moments because of what is going on with so many of the Scooby gang.
Again, thank you Audible for getting this re-recorded with Jim Marsters. The gaping hole in my collection is now complete!

What about James Marsters’s performance did you like?
So happy this is now available with James Marsters as narrator. He is very distinctive and for me, it isn't really a Dresden Files book unless Marsters is reading to me.

Worst so far.
This is dull. Spectacularly, inescapably dull. Just a long, unfulfilling tale which made little sense and wasn't really of any interest. If you thought the end of the Vampire War might mean a return to good old fashioned detective work like the first few books then you were horribly wrong. A new enemy emerges suddenly to fill the void. Ghost!Harry isn't very exciting and his inability to interact with the world didn't help. A lot of this seems contrived and the fact that every character laughs at Dresden's increasing repetitive banter doesn't help. Oh! And it's 17 hours!! That's got to be one of the longest so far and yet with the lack of plot it could easily have been 7. Read well by Marsters though.

Ghost Story Resurrected
If you could sum up Ghost Story in three words, what would they be?
Action Packed Emotion
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mortimer, though he's been introduced previously this book really develops his character and he has become a favourite.
Have you listened to any of James Marsters’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Marsters *is* Harry Dresden and his performance is excellent as always. Although the previous version by Glover was very good this one maintains consistency with the rest of the series.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Although I've already read the book and listened to the previous audio version the story is full of highs and lows. Sir Stuart in particular has some very moving moments.
An excellent book that does a good job of showing the aftermath of Harry Dresden's death.

Great series development
I've been steadily listening through this series and this might be my favourite book yet. Definitely not a book to start in with - but for fans it's a satisfying bit of character development and plot resolution. To me it's more developed than previous Dresden novels, which although I enjoy immensely I wouldn't say they always deliver on really developed characterisation and relationships. Plus James marsters performance continues to be some of the best audiobook reading out there!

If you want original Harry the Wizzard, skip
Hate it! Worst of all the books so far, can hardly get myself to listen. lacks all of what made all the others interesting... The book before (changes) was easily one of the best, and now this lame anticlimactic follow up.. might skip this, even skimming through seems not worth

Plenty good enough
a lot of people complain that this feels slow, no action etc.. and they're right. part of the problem with coming off the back of a book like Changes is that there are a lot of loose ends to tie up, but the conclusion of this book makes it all worthwhile.

- Pucca & Garu
Good but not outstanding!
I was really looking forward to the next instalment of the Dresden Files however; this book left me disappointed. The pace is slower, lots of new characters; some of which are hard to follow, and not enough of Murphy. It was good but it wasn't the best I've read/ listened too. James Marsters was brilliant as ever!

Not one his best but worth a listen...
I had only recently added this to my Dresden audible collection now James Marsters is narrating. Whilst John Glover did a sterling job I understand why a lot of folk (like me) did not have it on audible - I like continuity. No need to recap the story - if you have got this far you are well acquainted with our 'blow it up -ask questions later' wizard. Having said that I think Ghost Story is a bit on the weak side. Not a lot for James Marsters to get his teeth into like the later books although he does tackle it with gusto. It also feels like Jim Butcher is marking time while he thinks of something else. An enjoyable listen but I find the constant damsel saving a bit tedious. I did like the interaction with the ghosts especially Sir Stuart. On the whole not one of his best but a worthy edition to a long series.

Different, still awesome!
What a great way to continue Harry Dresden's story! Definitely a new direction, but still the same awesomeness!

so freaking good
loved it. great twist at the end. more molly please!! that chick is the bomb

Worth the Wait
I've read all the books in this series including the on that follows this one. I had to wait until it was redone with the original narrator, James Marsters. I'm rather astounded that producers of audio books do not realise the importance of a narrator and that when they replace one mid series, they what they are doing is the equivalent of a replacing the entire cast in a TV show. I am pleased that I got to listen to this one as I found the story line well written from a rather unique viewpoint. It's still Harry. He still gets into a heap of trouble and is saved by luck and friends as well as his skills but with the twist of having to operate under the laws of being a ghost. As always the reader turns the book into a play and we hear our familiar characters come to life again.
intriguing story
loved the way the story was being read plus it was a unique way to view harry and friends struggling

Hells Bells! What will Jim think of next?
I mean, where do you go after Changes? Like Harry, I guess you ask questions: - What would Dresden’s experience of the afterlife be? - How would all the rules change if Harry no longer has corporeal form? - Who is waiting for him on the other side? - How would his friends cope and develop after he’s gone? - How would Harry reflect on his life and how would he change? - Who are the heroes if Dresden can’t be? - Who is working behind the scenes? - And of course that all pervading question - How will he get out of this one?!?! I acknowledge many of the criticisms in some other reviews, but perhaps don’t let them sway you too much - there’s plenty of heart in this one, some great adventures and confounding twists and, most importantly, delicious new ideas and reveals.

Weakest Dresden novel first and second time through.
Read the novels all in a row initially. This was the first one I actually had to wait to be published. The series is epic, and even this book has some good scenes and important moments. But it was a slog to read the first time, and even with James Marsters definitive turn as Dresden, still took longer than usual to listen to this time around. Things pick up again though. And I’m looking forward to books 16 and 17.

- Josie - The Bubbly Book Reviewer
Dresden does it again.
Jim Butcher continues to teach us about Dresden, to explore his depths and his increasing maturity. Great character development! And this along with a story that you don’t want to stop listening to, bravo! The narrator James Marsters is now Dresden to me and continues with another great performance. Bravo Bellissimo 💐💐💐
Another solid book
If you’ve never read the Dresden files, there’s other books better to start with. It likely if you’re reading this one you’re making your way through the entire series. While it’s not the strongest, and the first quarter is a bit….tedious…push through, it reaches strides further in. James Marsters continues to do an outstanding job in narration. He has come a huge way since the first book. Amazing.

- Sarah McDonald
Thoroughly entertaining!
Again James Marsters brings this book and it’s characters to life. He really captures the essence of Harry and I’m totally hooked!

- Samuel Tunstall
I was recently awoken to the futility of reviews and their stifled but valiant attempt to convey meaning, it’s just a damn good book that was entertaining as hell in quiet moments. Best way to show my appreciation was to review it.

fourth time listening
this is my fourth time through the series and these books are still the best I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. nobody does it better than Jim Butcher and James Marsters

I'm Ivy Lane, and if I never see another faerie again, it'll be too soon. Twenty years after the faeries came and destroyed the world as we knew it, I use my specialist skills to keep rogue faeries in line and ensure humans and their magically gifted neighbors can coexist (relatively) peacefully. Nobody knows those skills came from the darkest corner of Faerie itself. When a human child disappears, replaced with a faerie changeling, I have to choose between taking the safe road or exposing my own history with the faeries to the seductively dangerous head of the Mage Lords.

I’m a 14 years old living with my parents, I’ve been noticing some paranormal things in my house, this show lets me know what’s going on in my house hold my friends have so many reasonable explanations for it but I know that it’s something else, here’s a story, I was sleeping with my dog one time and my light starts to flicker my closet door starts opening and closeing my mom and dad are screaming and I wake up but I can hear something in my room so I hear it come closer and it whispers ‘don’t do it’ in a quite but not loud voice but I didn’t open my eyes. I love this podcast it kept me busy while on my week trip to south Carolina. This podcast is truely one of a kind
I can relate to all of this
I can see things I can hear the ghost and I can feel them and thay like come to me like crazy and I don’t like it but I don’t have control over it but it mane happens at night and thay toctd me so I get it and I don’t feel alone anymore
terrible format.. no episode names anymore, no descriptions, all ads! no way to access the old format episodes without paying. what a money grab. he clearly doesn’t care anymore

Ghost stories.
A collection of spooky short fiction by Edith Wharton and a historical nonfiction narrative about a woman who claimed to be haunted.

By Sadie Stein
Dear readers,
We all have our forms of escapism.
Whenever something very difficult has happened in my life, I have taken refuge in ghost stories. In the case of bereavement, the reasons seem clear enough; and maybe in every other case too — the possibility of the unexplainable can be a balm when the world itself feels beyond our understanding. October is designated haunting season, but the uncanny is perennial. There are almost too many ghost stories to choose from — Sarah Waters’s “Affinity, ” Marghanita Laski’s“The Victorian Chaise-Longue” and Virago’s peerless collection of ghost stories have all gotten me through a lot — but your time is valuable, so I’ll limit myself here to two of my favorite comfort reads.
“Ghosts,” by Edith Wharton
Fiction, 1937
“‘No, I don’t believe in ghosts, but I’m afraid of them,’ is much more than the cheap paradox it seems to many,” Wharton wrote in her preface to this collection. Wharton was not an avowed believer, but like many writers she found the ghost story to be the perfect medium (pun intended) for exploring questions of sexuality, class and consciousness. And given her mastery of all three subjects it should come as no surprise that the stories in this collection are a paradigm not just of the genre but of short fiction generally.
Because it collects stories written between 1902 and 1937, it’s a faithful chronicle of a changing world: Read “The Lady’s Maid’s Bell” — featuring a full staff of servants — followed by “All Souls,’” among the last written in this collection, in which an elderly matron is left alone and helpless (one of the subtlest scary stories ever written, for my money). The relationship between classes is a recurring preoccupation; so is real estate; so is repression. Is my favorite “The Pomegranate Seed,” that amazing exploration of jealousy? Or “Miss Mary Pask,” a meditation on aging? Or maybe the Jamesian “The Eyes”? How to choose?
Read if you like: Any Edith Wharton novel; no Edith Wharton novels; if you love ghost stories; if you hate ghost stories Available from: NYRB Classics — and I do think this is one you’ll want a physical copy of, if only to better read before bed. But many of the stories can be found individually online. And here is a different version , not sequenced by Wharton, containing a number of the same stories.
“The Haunting of Alma Fielding: A True Ghost Story,” by Kate Summerscale
Nonfiction, 2020
In 1938, a young matron in the London suburbs claimed to be the subject of a dramatic possession; as she recounted to the avid tabloids, her home was suddenly full of flying objects and her person regularly assaulted by violent attacks. She also suddenly had the ability to manifest live insects and pieces of jewelry. The story ultimately garnered the attention of a psychical researcher named Nandor Fodor, who became deeply invested in the case and made the woman, Alma Fielding, the subject of increasingly intrusive and public scientific tests. Was Fielding a fraud or a phenomenon — or was she just very unwell? The same could be asked of her investigator. And who, if anyone, was exploiting whom?
Summerscale, always a deft and humane storyteller, brings this deeply uncomfortable story to life with characteristic élan; the focus of one’s outrage and sympathy shifts from chapter to chapter, and the evocation of a (barely) between-the-wars Britain is vivid.
Read if you like: “Devil in the White City,” “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” Available from: Wherever fine books are sold. I like the Moravian in Bethlehem, Pa., because it’s supposedly haunted
Why don’t you …
See how it all started? I don’t think there’s a book in my library I recommend more than Deborah Blum’s “Ghost Hunters: William James and the Scientific Hunt for Proof of Life After Death.” (In fact, I seem to have loaned out both my copies!) Amid the spiritualism craze of the 19th century, a group of respected scholars, including Henry James’s brother, a titan of American psychology, seriously undertook psychical research — which proved thorny, inconclusive and utterly fascinating.
Hear a bump in the night? For obvious reasons, ghost stories make incredible audiobooks . Vernon Lee — the pen name of Violet Paget — was one of the great Victorian ghost-story scribes (often using the supernatural to encode queer themes), and “A Phantom Lover” is an atmospheric, eerie pleasure.
Get extra credit? One of Edith Wharton’s best ghost stories, “The Looking Glass,” is not in the collection I recommended above, but it is in her book “ The World Over. ” It’s about an aging beauty in thrall to spiritualism, and contains this incredible quote: “There was nothing she wouldn’t do for you, if ever for a minute you could get her to stop thinking of herself … and that’s saying a good deal, for a rich lady. Money’s an armor, you see; and there’s a few cracks in it. But Mrs. Clingsland was a loving nature, if only anybody’d shown her how to love. … Oh, dear, and wouldn’t she have been surprised if you’d told her that! Her that thought she was living up to her chin in love and love-making.”

The True Story Behind the Netflix Documentary The Devil on Trial
N etflix has billed its new horror documentary, The Devil on Trial , as the first and only time demonic possession was used as a defense in a U.S. murder trial. In that case, however, the judge ruled that it was not an acceptable defense, and that he would not permit any evidence related to possession.
The trial, which took place in 1981 in Brookfield, Conn., became known as the “Devil Made Me Do It” case and drew national attention when 19-year-old defendant Arne Cheyenne Johnson attempted to deny responsibility for the killing of his landlord, Alan Bono, based on claims of possession.
The Devil on Trial , out this month on Netflix, includes new audio recordings and photographs of the alleged possession, as well as fictional reenactments and interviews with Johnson and his brothers-in-law: David, Alan, and Carl Glatzel.
“There are people who tell lies,” director Chris Holt told Netflix . “But I sat down with David and Arne and Alan and Carl, for hours on end, and their stories never changed. I think they were telling me the truth — but it’s their interpretations of the truth rather than it being a hardened fact. But they believed—and I believed—what they were saying is truthful.”
Arne Johnson's case
Once the judge threw out all evidence related to possession, the defense found it increasingly difficult to argue the case. Johnson’s sisters had been at the scene of the crime when it happened, and they had signed police statements saying that they had seen Johnson stab Bono. (Bono was stabbed four times.)
Still, to this day, Johnson maintains his innocence. “I’ve never hurt anybody,” he says in the documentary. “Never. And I said, ‘There’s no way I did this. You got the wrong person.’” The detective who processed Johnson after the stabbing said that he seemed not to be able to recall anything about the killing.
Eventually, Johnson shifted gears and pleaded self-defense, aiming for a manslaughter charge instead of murder in the first degree. The jury would eventually rule in his favor, charging him with manslaughter in the first degree. He was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in a maximum security prison.
“I believed in the story, I believed in the defense,” says Johnson’s attorney, Martin Minnella, in the documentary. “And I also believed there probably wasn’t another lawyer in the state that would represent him with this defense.”

Where David Glatzel fits in the possession narrative
Much of The Devil on Trial , however, focuses on another character: David Glatzel, the youngest brother-in-law of Arne Johnson. (At the time of the killing, Arne had not yet married David’s sister, Debbie, but was very close with the family.)
Glatzel says that, in 1980, when he was 11, he was possessed by the devil, which he first encountered in Arne and Debbie’s new house. “It looked like the devil from a Halloween costume,” he says in the documentary. “His eyes were black, solid black, just like a chunk of coal, and it scared me.”
This experience would eventually lead to what David, Arne, Alan, and Carl characterized as full-scale demonic possession. The brothers’ mother, Judy, eventually called Ed and Lorraine Warren , paranormal investigators who were made famous by the Amityville Horror incident. Together, Judy and the Warrens secured an exorcism from the Catholic Church.
When it appeared that David was struggling during the exorcism, Arne intervened. “I yelled at this thing to the top of my lungs,” he says in the documentary. “I said, ‘Leave this little kid alone. Take me on. I’m here. Take me on.’ I felt this coldness come over me, ice cold. Lorraine said, ‘Oh my God, what did you do?’”
The Warrens and most of the Glatzel family believe that the entity that was supposedly possessing David then migrated into Arne. Five months later, they say, it resurfaced, took over Arne’s body, and killed Alan Bono.
The oldest Glatzel brother, Carl, disagrees. “The murder of Alan Bono, I never even thought it was connected to David,” he says in the film. “There’s nothing demonic in this. Arne was very possessive of Debbie. There was speculations and rumors that Debbie was having an affair with Arne Bono.”

How The Devil on Trial relates to The Conjuring franchise
After the trial, Ed and Lorraine Warren hired an author, Gerald Brittle, to write David and Arne’s story. “Ed said, ‘Make it scary,’” Carl says in the film. “And [Gerald] goes, ‘But I checked with the people, and they said this didn’t happen.’ Ed goes, ‘Make it scary. People come to us. They buy scary.’”
That became the 1983 book The Devil in Connecticut , which in turn was the inspiration for the 2021 film The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. At the time, the Glatzel parents received $4,500 for selling their story. The Warrens received more than $81,000.
“Lorraine told me I was going to be a rich little boy from having this book deal,” David says in the documentary. “And that was a lie. The Warrens made a lot of money off of us. If they can profit off you, they will.”

The Devil on Trial 's grim conclusion
In 1985, Arne Johnson and Debbie Glatzel got married in prison. Arne was released a year later, after having served five years, for good behavior. The pair stayed together until Debbie’s death in 2021.
But the four Glatzel siblings are scattered and rarely keep in contact. After his parents’ death, Carl was sorting through their belongings when he found a note from his mother: “Well, the family had their medicine tonight, and everything was good.” He believes that she had been drugging the rest of the family with Sominex, a sleep aid, by putting it in their food.
“But Sominex has long-lasting effects on people,” Carl says. “Mood swings, weight gain, and hallucinations. It is very possible that my brother David has ingested enough of this stuff over the years, where he did see things. Or at least he thought he saw things.”
