If youâve got a hole in your TV schedule where Selling Sunset used to be, and youâre all caught up on the latest Below Deck drama, Hot Yachts: Miami might be the show for you.
The new reality series is setting sail on Paramount+, taking passengers into the seriously glamorous world of super-yacht brokering.
Of course, there will be some choppy waters ahead as agents do battle to get their customers the biggest boats in the marina, and will stop at nothing to make them happy.
Even if that means chartering a plane just for one loaf of bread.
Yes, seriously.
Chatting to Metro.co.uk ahead of the UK release, the cast â including Katya Hall, Vika Avramchuk and Fotis Geranios â lifted the lid on some of the wildest requests they have been given, and just how luxurious the industry really is.
Spilling the beans on demands from customers, Katya, aka the âqueen of super yachtsâ, told us: âWe all have plenty⊠From having to fly provisions to chartering a plane to put a loaf of bread on it and fly it to the CaribbeanâŠ
âI had a client calling me saying, âIâm heading to an airport â when I land I expect a 70m yacht and I want to charter it for three weeks, ready to go.âÂ
âWeâre talking about a multimillion-dollar charter and he said, âIâm going to be unavailable for 10 hours as Iâm flying. When I land, I sure hope you have a yacht for me to go on.â Things like this do happen, this is real, and we manage.Â
âWe get it done every time. Sometimes it seems like a miracle, but we pull them off.â
Katya sounds like someone we need to have on speed dial immediately.
Many have dubbed Hot Yachts: Miami a mix of Selling Sunset and Below Deck, with the latter showing the inner workings â and scandals â of the crew as they aim to please very rich charter guests.
Kaile Justine, who worked on boats herself for years before making the switch to brokering, shared how the programs are lifting the curtain on very different subjects.
âPeople who work on the boats, theyâre more like a family,â she said. âItâs not drama like that.Â
âBut being able to put lines on the boat, really stressful situations, when you have wind hitting you and the people on deck donât know what theyâre doing. Of course, that is definitely realistic, because Iâve seen it.Â
âWe see boats crash in Miami Beach Marina all the time, so definitely thatâs realistic.â
âI think the idea has been around for such a long time to do a TV show on the world of super yacht brokers,â Katya continued. âObviously [itâs] very glamorous, especially on the outside.Â
âSometimes [there are] dirty engine rooms and loud noisy shipyards on the inside, but it appears very bright and shiny from the outside, and thatâs what we aim to do.
âWe want our clients to only have bright and shiny experiences and weâll deal with the noisy, dirty shipyards on our end.â
The Below Deck cast have been vocal about the negative reaction they got from their fellow yachting colleagues before joining the show, with Captain Lee Rosbach admitting that he was told his âcareer was overâ for taking part .
After the program â and the spin-offs â grew in popularity, many changed their tune and jumped to get in on the action.
When asked about whether they had a similar reaction from their industry colleagues regarding Hot Yachts: Miami, Katya added: âFotis and I have got mixed reviews, the vast majority of people love it, they think itâs a funny show.Â
âIt is good to shed some some light on what we do, and when we introduce more people to yachting. Statistics say that only 5% of people that can afford to buy a charter yacht actually do. So for us, exposure is good, PR is good.Â
âThen we had a couple of people saying, âWeâre a lot more serious and weâre a lot more corporate than it looksâ.
âSure, thatâs true. But do we want to film boardroom meetings and sitting in front of a computer writing long emails? Of course not. Itâs a juggling act.â

Being called a prostitute, stealing millions of dollars worth of commissions and flirting with clients and captains is just part of the day to day of a super yacht broker - according to a new TV show.    Â
The incredibly glamorous - and extremely bitchy - world of super yachts has been unveiled in Hot Yachts Miami, which launched this weekend on Paramount Plus.
A perfect combination of excessive wealth and petty backstabbing has got viewers hooked with many saying they've binged the whole series in a weekend.
Many viewers have been particularly intrigue by yachting newbie Vika, a former socialite and model, who goes toe-to-toe with veteran broker Kaile after the pair fight over a client.     Â
In episode one, Kalie was seen showing a group of clients around a yacht.
Many viewers have been particularly intrigue by yachting newbie Vika (pictured), a former socialite and model, who goes toe-to-toe with veteran broker Kaile after the pair fight over a client
Noticing one, Dr Toby, was unattended, Vika swooped in and offered to help him.
This however didn't sit right with Kalie, who then unleashed her wrath on Vika.    Â
'I'm looking for Toby and I come around the corner and what do I see? Vika' Kalie told the cameras.
'And I'm thinking, wow, "do they really allow escorts into this venue?"'
'The fact this girl is here trying to do business is just embarrassing for her. Like what are you, the bootlegged Bonnie and Clyde? You guys look ridiculous'.
She added that there are 'unsaid rules' that every broker knows.Â
'I'm nice but once you f*** with me it's bad. No one in this industry will work with you,' she went on.Â
Kalie (pictured) went on to take Vika's card off Dr Toby and rip it up, but like didn't stop the two from connecting
Kalie went on to take Vika's card off Dr Toby and rip it up, but it didn't stop the two from connecting.
Later, after discovering Vika was talking to Dr Toby through another broker she went on to call her a 'cockroach'.Â
Confused by the interaction, rookie Vika branded Kalie 'unprofessional' and 'acting like she's in high school'.Â
Later, comforting Kalie, fellow broker Paul told her that he's lost more than $2.3million by other brokers 'stealing his commissions'.
'It's the sunshine state with the shadiest people,' he added. Â
From left, Vika, Katya, Fotis, Kaile, Nick,Jack, Liliana and Juno. The brokers sell super yachts to billionaires
A perfect combination of excessive wealth and petty backstabbing has got viewers hooked with many saying they've binged the whole series in a weekendÂ
Later, meeting at a party Kalie unleashed her wrath on Vika again.
'You made yourself look like some escort,' she said.
'I know you're young, baby. But you don't have to project yourself.
'You look like a hooker on a boat, is your mum your madam?
'I could never trust you,' she added.
Dubbed ' Selling Sunset meets Below Deck' the programme shows off the extreme wealth of the Florida  billionaire's playground where everyone looks like a supermodel and tensions run high.
Katya sells boats for $100,000,000, with her client base including celebs and royals
Against a backdrop of swanky parties, sumptuous dinners and beachside penthouses, the brokers will stop at nothing as they compete to sell superyachts to the super-rich.
But they always want more â more money, more sex, more power â and their showdowns are often spectacular.
The stakes are incredibly high. One sale could make the brokers millionaires themselves thanks to commissions of up to ten per cent, and one deal organising a yacht's charter for $1 million (ÂŁ775,000) a week could make them more than most people make in a year.
The eight-part series on Paramount+ introduces us to some memorable characters whose job it is to sell the super-rich their dream of sailing off into the sunset. At the centre of it are rivals Nick Cardoza and Katya Hall.
Kaile, Vika and Katya are among the yacht brokers in Miami's cutthroat scene
Charming and handsome, Nick calls himself 'Mr Yachts'. Forbes magazine called him 'The guy celebrities go to for yachts', and he likes to play as hard as he works â his hobbies seem to be partying and womanising.
By comparison, Siberian-born Katya is the ice queen; she's a top broker at international yacht agency IYC, her clients include Prince Albert of Monaco, and the boats she sells can go for ÂŁ200 million.
Katya says she 'won't get out of bed for less than ÂŁ10 million'.
She's added that she's rented boats out for £2.5million for 24 weeks for one client.
But having worked her way up the ladder, Katya is desperate to stay there. The one chink in her armour is her protégée Viktoriya Avramchuk, known as Vika. An impossibly leggy former model, like Katya she's an immigrant.
Liliana (pictured) made a huge success of working on the charter side of the yacht business, currently managing fifteen active yachts, with an annual charter sales revenue of around $16million
Born in Kyiv, she moved to Prague when she was 14 and then on to the US at 16.
Katya gave her the job as a favour to Vika's mother Zhanna, who's very good at getting her own way.
Vika's been with Katya for 18 months and is yet to make a sale â though she's very good at flirting with clients. When she turns her attention to Nick, however, Katya is furious and warns Vika that he may not be all he seems.
She says that the secret to success is understanding, to the core, what the client desires and needs and promptly meeting those needs.Â
Truly glamourous, she's neighbours in Miami with the Beckhams, and has been on Leonardo DiCaprio's yachtÂ
Meanwhile, a third broker, Kaile, also has reason to be furious with both Vika and her mother. While she's showing two clients around some yachts, Vika swoops in and tries to steal one of them away.
Kaile isn't impressed to find a flirtatious Vika and Zhanna drinking champagne with her client, who seems to be revelling in having two brokers fighting over him.
Charming and handsome, Nick calls himself 'Mr Yachts'. Forbes magazine called him 'The guy celebrities go to for yachts'
Enjoying all this drama is Vika's camp colleague Fotis, who believes trying to steal a client from under a rival's nose is bad behaviour and is determined to bring Vika and Kaile together so he can watch the fur fly.

Katya is married to an attorney and tech founder and lives in a penthouse overlooking Fort Lauderdale beach, so she can keep an eye on the yachts coming in and out of the harbour.Â
She has a wardrobe to rival the Kardashians and a friends list that includes the cast of The Real Housewives!
Vika is learning from the best in the business but although she knows a lot of potential wealthy clients, she has yet to make a sale
Vika is a socialite and ex-model.Â
Although she doesn't have her brokerage license yet, she is working under Katya as an associate, a position she managed to get due to her connections and personality (Katya knows Vika's mother also).Â
Vika is learning from the best in the business but although she knows a lot of potential wealthy clients, she has yet to make a sale.
Vika's social circle is varied as she likes to befriend interesting people who lead colourful lives.
She has a lot of friends who are art dealers, yacht brokers, lawyers, models and actors and knows Leonardo DiCaprio, having spent many years traveling to St Tropez to his gala and to his house in Malibu.

Sassy, beautiful and highly driven, Kaile has been in the yachting world for the last four years and has high ambitions to become the most successful female yacht broker in Florida.
Kaile is aware that she is still relatively new to the industry but she hustles hard and her work on the dock pays off.
Kaile makes a lot of her connections by word of mouth, social media and networking. This is where she has met most of her clients.
Kaile gets frustrated when clients go with a cheaper option and then are left disappointed. She tries to tell her clients that going cheap isn't always best.
Known as 'Mr Yachts' in the industry, a name he has trademarked for himself, Nick is both the most loved and hated yacht broker in Florida.Â
Everyone knows him. His larger-than-life personality, good looks and charm are in equal measure to his arrogance and desire to win.Â
Never one to turn down an opportunity to network or party hard, Nick is ready to go 24/7.
Forbes magazine cited Nick as 'THE guy celebrities go to for yachts'. Nick is currently an independent yacht broker and is planning to launch his own yacht booking app.

And she's made a huge success of working on the charter side of the yacht business, currently managing fifteen active yachts, with an annual charter sales revenue of around $16million.Â
Her clients are the yacht owners and she represents them in the charter market as the gatekeeper to their yachts. Liliana's clients are all similar - very successful business people who enjoy the fine things in life.
Jack is adamant when he says he only deals with people who fall into these three categories; 'The Millies, The Billies and The Trillies'.
Jack is an under-30 entrepreneur who runs his own luxury concierge business, Coppola Concierge.Â
As a formally trained butler, at The British Butler Institute in London, Jack has the highest level of service expertise that he uses to create bespoke experiences for each of his clients.
He dreams of retiring by the age of 30 so he can live on a yacht and travel the world while he manages his well-equipped and trusted team back at home. Jack is witty, smart, super competitive and he never takes 'no' for an answer.Â
He is forever fashionable, Jack dresses impeccably and he loves his Louboutin shoes, Hermes belts and always enjoys a dinner of champagne and caviar. His one-liners are not only hilarious, but 100 per cent honest.
Juno says he's one of the few Black yacht brokers working in the industry and is proud of his Haitian heritage.
Juno is a well-known broker in Florida and has a high sales success rate. Known in the industry as 'Juno The Boat Guy,' he is a regular on the south Florida yachting and night life scene and says his favourite day of the week is 'The Day I Close A Deal'.Â
Juno says he's one of the few Black yacht brokers working in the industry and is proud of his Haitian heritage.Â
He admits the industry is male dominated and would love to see more women as yacht brokers.
Fotis loves his job and is driven by success. He charters roughly 80 yachts a year, and the money he makes annually is enough to purchase a house AND a car
Fun loving and party going Fotis has been in yacht sales since 2007. Mainly chartering yachts, Fotis has experienced insane demands from the crazy rich but he enjoys being challenged and always delivers.
Fotis doesnât shy away from confrontation and enjoys a gossip with his fellow yacht brokers, even if that means causing controversy.
Fotis loves his job and is driven by success. He charters roughly 80 yachts a year, and the money he makes annually is enough to purchase a house AND a car.
He has travelled the globe, either discovering new destinations or visiting his all-time favourite ones. For Fotis, every little corner of the world has a potential for chartering.
All his clients are wealthy and he finds that the best place to close a deal is on a night out, when potential clients loosen up.
He loves to close deals with a glass of champagne in his hand and generally remains friends with the fun clients, who then take him on trips on their newly purchased boats.
When Fotis closes a deal he often celebrates with his friends by going to a fun destination like Mykonos and ordering lots of delicious food and expensive alcohol. Fotis also often receives expensive gifts from his clients, which is a big perk of the job.
Fotis admits itâs a cut-throat industry, where brokers steal clients from each other.Â
However, he would never steal clients from Katya, who heâs good friends with. Together they love hanging out at boat shows and partying.

Tech Titan Just Cleared of Fraud Is Missing After Luxury Superyacht Hit by Tornado
One of the worldâs largest sailing superyachts was caught in a storm along the beautiful Sicilian coastline near Palermo.

British tech mogul Mike Lynch and his daughter are among six people missing after a majestic luxury superyacht was sunk by a tornado off the coast of Sicily early Monday.
Two Americans and two other Brits also remain unaccounted for after the 184-foot sailing vessel Bayesian sank to the depths around 5 a.m. just off the coast of Palermo. Fifteen passengers and crewâincluding a 1-year-old girlâwere rescued, according to local media reports, while the body of one man has been recovered.
Lynch, 59, disappeared in the incident but his wife, Angela Bacares, has been rescued. She told La Repubblica that she sustained abrasions to her feet during the chaos and was now unable to walk.

The Daily Mail reported that Lynchâs 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, remained unaccounted for by early Monday evening, as well as at least one of the elder Lynchâs attorneys. Itâs unclear if his second daughter was on board or not.
In June, a San Francisco jury found Lynch not guilty on 15 fraud charges brought over the sale of his Autonomy company to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.
Once described in the U.K. as Britainâs Bill Gates, Lynch thanked jurors at the end of his decade-long legal battle to clear his name. âI am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,â he said after his acquittal.
A lawyer aboard the Bayesianâs ill fated trip was the 36-year-old Ayla Ronald, the The Telegraph reported. Her father, Lin Ronald, told the paper that the trip was to celebrate Lynchâs acquittal.
The Bayesian, a 56-meter-long sailboat, was photographed (left) off the coast of Palermo just hours before sinking.

The reality that those missing are likely dead began setting in for the tragedyâs survivors by Monday afternoon, Italian officials said.
âWe have given the survivors this information, but they are talking and crying all the time because they have realized that there is little hope of finding their friends alive,â the doctor Domenico Cipolla told Reuters from a hospital housing victims.
Bayesian was built by the Perini Navi shipyard in Italy in 2008 and refitted in 2020. The vessel boasted the tallest aluminum mast in the world, reaching over 240 feet, according to Boat International . The nautical news site reported that the iconic vessel was one of the 50 largest sailing yachts on Earth.
Divers were dispatched to the sinking site of the Bayesian. Six people, including two Americans, remained unaccounted for by Monday evening.

Divers reached the wreck of the British-flagged yacht over 160 feet below the surface. They found the body of a man alongside the vessel and more bodies were visible through the shipâs portholes, according to the Corriere della Sera newspaper. The man whose remains were recovered was the shipâs chef, La Repubblica reports, citing local fire officials. The Mail reported that the worker is âbelievedâ to be a Canadian national.
The 1-year-old English girl who survived the disaster was taken to a hospital but was unscathed.
âI held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning. It was all dark,â her mother, identified as Charlotte Golunski, told La Repubblica . âIn the water I couldnât keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.â
Charlotte Golunski detailed to an Italian newspaper how she saved her one-year-old baby from drowning.
Golunski required stitches to an injury on her chest, while her husband also reportedly suffered minor injuries.
The passengers on board the boat were mainly from the U.K. , though others hailed from Sri Lanka , New Zealand , and Ireland , according to the ANSA news agency. Some witnesses told the agency the ship was anchored in front of the port of Porticello when the tornado hit.
Karsten Borner, the captain of another boat in the area when the storm hit, said heâd fired up his vesselâs engine in order to keep control and avoid hitting the Bayesian.
âWe managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,â he said, Reuters reported. The other vessel âwent flat on the water, and then down,â he added.
Borner said his crew then found several survivors on a life raft, three of whom were seriously hurt. They were helped onto his vessel before the coast guard arrived to collect them.
The sinking took place just off the coast of Sicily in Italyâs south.

The Bayesian is owned by a company called Revtom Limited, according to shipspotting.com. Bacares, Lynchâs wife, is the only shareholder in the business, according to Reuters.
Lynchâs Ph.D. at Cambridge University and the software with which he amassed his fortune were both based on Bayesian theory, according to the news agency.
âA beautiful boat where there had been a party. A normal holiday spent happily at sea turned into a tragedy,â one witness told ANSA.
The local BAIA Santa Nicolicchia restaurant shared on Facebook a picture purportedly showing the Bayesian at around 10 p.m. on Sunday night. The account also posted security camera footage from the early hours showing violent winds causing damage outside the restaurant.
Italyâs fire and rescue service separately shared footage of the recovery operation with helicopters and boats operating in the area of the sinking.
âI was at home when the tornado hit,â local fisherman Pietro Asciutto told Ansa. âI immediately closed all the windows. Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very large. I saw it sink suddenly.â
One witnessâthe captain of a trawlerâsaid he was about to go out on a fishing trip in the early hours but stayed in the harbor after seeing lightning over the water.
âAt about 4:15 a.m. we saw a flare in the sea,â Fabio CefalĂč said, according to the BBC . âWe waited for this waterspout to pass.â
A tornadic waterspout is a tornado that either forms over water or moves from land to water, according to the NOAAâs National Ocean Service .
By the time he got out to sea, CefalĂč said, all he found were cushions and other flotsam from the deck of the sunken vessel.

C. Ray Hall, beloved Courier Journal writer, was an inspiration without baggage.
The image that lingers of C. Ray Hall âthe anecdote he probably would have used in writing this story â is of him sitting in a convertible as grand marshal of the 1988 Trigg County Ham Festival with a sheepish grin on his face, a float not far behind him carrying a hound dog barking up a 10-foot pole with a worried raccoon on top.
Hall, a Cadiz Kentucky native and local journalism hero, never was a front seat guy. He would rather have been watching and writing than sitting and waving. But it was a proud moment. He knew about the ways of his home folks, never forgot them, even as he moved on to his much honored and respected newspaper career in Lexington and Louisville and was then returned home in his death.
He was named for two uncles who served in heavy combat in World War II, Charles Adams who was captured in the Battle of the Bulge, and Billy Ray Adams, a Marine. He was always called Western-Kentucky âC. Ray,â as if a named with two syllables.
He grew up in a family of little means in a cluster of small wooden houses in an area called âthe gullyâ on the edge of Cadiz. The family would joke â sort of â about finding an extra dime for Christmas. His mother, Edna, was listed as a âhomemaker.â Her brief biography said she won $10 in gold in a spelling bee as a 10-year-old kid âa definite help in Depression-era finances, a skill passed on to her son. She kept every article he ever wrote.Â
C. Rayâs father, Noble, worked for a local farmer, then in a lumber company, finally for the City of Cadiz sweeping streets and hand-pushing a lawnmower through the large local cemetery.Â
âHe was almost a sharecropper,â said Clarence Choate, Hallâs nephew. âHe done whatever needed doing.â
C. Ray always stayed in some contact with his Cadiz relatives as his parents and two siblings died. Choate said he was humble, didnât say much, but what he did say mattered. Choate added Hall, who was about 10 years older, loved a âsmall joke,â and âwas not about a lot of chatter.â Those who knew C. Ray said he told those small jokes in a low voice that would rise a little with the punchline. Then some shared laughter.
C. Ray always loved statistics, not necessarily a familiar attribute of good writers. For years he sat up on the bleachers behind home plate at the Cadiz Little League field keeping detailed records of every game and player, his meager pay helping his family.
C. Ray's first columns
He continued mixing numbers â and letters â as a statistician and manager for the powerful 1962-63 Trigg County High School basketball team, turning both skills into his first columns for the local Cadiz Record. He continued writing them as a teenager all through high school, his legend growing.
Surprisingly, he won a superior rating for âRadio Speakingâ at Murray State College while in high school. He was later inducted into the Trigg County High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Along with being student council president, Hall evidenced other skills mostly unknown to others in 1963 when he painted the Trigg County Wildcat insignia on the basketball mid-court, a representation that remained until the mid-1990s renovation. He described it as âthe least ferocious-looking wildcat in history.â He got $25 for the work, more family money. No one in Louisville ever heard C. Ray mention that, either.
Off to Vietnam
He graduated from Trigg County High School in 1965 as class salutatorian. With Vietnam looming, family tradition in play, and little money for college, Hall joined the United States Air Force in Louisville on Nov. 18, 1965. He was a payroll clerk at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois â the numbers thing still alive â then was shipped to Cam Ranh Bay Vietnam, of which he wrote: âIt was a safe place. Officers lived in air-conditioned trailers and a beer cost a dime, same as a coke.â
He was always more of a Coke guy.
Sgt. C. Ray Hall was discharged from service almost four years later on May 26, 1969, by then having accumulated three stripes, five medals and one injury, a broken ankle, playing basketball. Unless asked about any military service, he never mentioned any of that to his Louisville friends either.
Always wanting to be a writer, and using the GI Bill, Hall studied journalism at Oregon State University, and the universities of Kentucky, where he lived and breathed its basketball, and Tennessee, often sneaking back to Big Orange Country in Knoxville for a football game.Â
His writing resume would include writer and editor at Inside Kentucky Sports magazine, the Lexington Herald Leader, and Auto Week magazine. He joined the Louisville Courier Journal in 1981, where his skills led to many writing awards from the entire Gannett newspapers chain â none ever mentioned or displayed â and the previously mentioned ride in a convertible at the Trigg County Ham Festival preceding a float with a hound dog and a raccoon.
Susan White, a freelance writer, first met Hall in 1978 when he was features editor at the Lexington Herald-Leader. She had been hired for a job among 105 candidates as freelance television critic, then paying a princely $15 a column, but $25 if it ran on Sunday.Â
âI had never written for a paper before,â she said. âI never cared that much for television.â
Not surprisingly, her first column didnât run for weeks. She nervously called Hall. He fixed the writing problem: âHe would sit back, read my story and then, very quietly, point precisely to its weak point. He was always right, and I loved him for it.â
The two became friends. When White later moved to California, Hall showed up after the movers had emptied her house of furniture with coffee and doughnuts, a sweet goodbye gift in an empty room.
âC. Ray was proud to say he was from Cadiz, and I think a little bit of Cadiz is embedded in all the journalists he worked with over the years,â she said. âWe got the message by watching him. Work hard. Donât show off. And always remember where you came from.
âIt was like having a special person in your back pocket to pull out when needed.â
C. Ray Hall to The Courier Journal
Hall moved on to The Courier Journal where in 2003 Katya Cengel, newly hired as features writer, was feeling a little unsure of her work and seeking advice. Hall was the recommended cure. She researched his stories, and feeling a little intimidated, sought him out.
No problem. Advice was happily given, especially on one story where she had many great interviews on the same subject and not sure how to proceed.
âHe told me sometimes one strong story is better than a half-dozen snippets,â she said. âHe advised me to focus on one of the people and just use the others to fill out the story as needed.â
Cengel went on to write stories for the New York Times and Smithsonian magazines, author four books, and now teaches journalism at California Polytechnic State University, passing on lessons learned in Louisville.
Courier Journal SCENE magazine editor Greg Johnson called Hall âa big storyâ guy, a writerâs writer that any editor would turn to when there was a high-profile piece to be written about a touchy subject, or a profile of someone sufficiently famous that any error whatsoever would be called out by readers.
That would include Muhammad Aliâs obituary , for which Hall interviewed about 20 to 30 people over a two-month period for a package of stories. He had prepared that story ten years before Aliâs death, knowing it was inevitable and a quick response would be required, the opinions mixed:
âNo one I talked to was neutral about Ali. Everyone seemed to have an opinion, a verdict, and they were all vivid and visceral as I can recall.âÂ
More: C. Ray Hall reflects on reporting for Ali obituary
Hall helped write the obituary of Kentucky basketball coach Joe B. Hallâs , did a story about the first Black county sheriff in Kentucky and even a profile of famous Kentucky pornographer Larry Flynt, who started Hustler magazine. Leaning a little into made-for-TV, Hall spent a few risky days and nights following ârepo menâ as they repossessed other peopleâs cars. Courier Journal administrative assistant Mary Pat Falk reminded us âhe never wore socks.â
A perfect example of Hallâs ability to write a good lead paragraph, to draw the reader in with ease, was in a 1996 Scene profile of Dr. George Nichols, 19 years of Kentucky chief medical examiner and leaning toward retirement. The headline read âGeorge Nichols sees the light at the end of the autopsyâ:
âThe subject is a white male, age 49, 5 feet 9 inches tall, approximately 160 pounds with a history of gout and no distinguishing marks.â
So, whoâs not going to read the next paragraph?
C. Ray Hall was an inspiration without baggage. His genius was in observational details, to just watch and listen, judge without being judgmental, to let the subjects of his stories reveal themselves.
As a writer for The Courier Journalâs Sunday Magazine, Hall profiled Louisville long-time radio personality Terry Meiners , who said of the story:
"C. Ray Hall followed me for three days. I was worried that I was about to be indicted. What in the world would be that interesting that required three days of observation? The story turned out to be the most through, thoughtful, and accurate piece ever written about me.â
C. Ray Hall retired
Hall retired from The Courier Journal in 2011, did a little writing, was heavily involved in editing the recently released book about Humanaâs David A. Jones, "Always Moving Forward."
He had some heart issues. Last Christmas he spoke to his nephews about his possible death, saying heâd like his ashes placed next to his mother and father. Heâd also mentioned over the years heâd like some of his ashes spread in Virginiaâs Shenandoah Valley, or some beautiful place along the ocean in the Pacific Northwest. If someone was going that way. He didnât want to cause any trouble.
On July 29, 2024, neighbors called police to his Louisville home saying no one had picked up his mail in a few days. His body was found seated at his computer, as if still writing, the probable cause of death a heart attack. C. Ray Hall was 77. His survivors are three nephews.
His body was taken to the Goodwin Funeral Home in Cadiz where he was cremated. He wanted no services. No one in Louisville knew of his death until six days after his body was found. His ashes will be placed next to his parents in a small, private ceremony at Blue Spring Cemetery in Trigg County, a separate stone placed honoring his military service.
Bob Brame, president of the Trigg County Historical and Preservation Society, and manager of Cadiz Hardware Store, said the community will soon honor C. Ray Hall as a Trigg County High School Distinguished Alumni.
Bob Hill was a Louisville Times and Courier Journal feature writer and columnist for 33 years.
