No, a ghost word is a word that “has come into existence by error rather than by normal linguistic transmission, as through the mistaken reading of a manuscript, a scribal error, or a misprint.” And, we’ve collected our favorite ghost words that scare us daily …

Dord  is a truly great ghost word if there ever was one. The original Webster’s New International Dictionary listing was like this: D or d . This was an abbreviation for “density in physics or chemistry.” Then, it seems that in 1931, a chemistry editor sent in a slip that read D or d, cont./density . The point was to add density to the list of words that the letter D can abbreviate.

And, it seems these slips used hyphens to separate letters. So, it read D-or-d . Whoever was inputting this entry viewed it as a word ( dord) rather than seeing it as a choice, D or d . It made it into the dictionary in 1934 and the error was discovered five years later … yet it continues to appear.

We all know what the word tweed  means—”a coarse wool cloth in a variety of weaves and colors.” My, that’s a spiffy tweed jacket you’re wearing today!

But, the word may have come from a misuse of the Scottish word tweel , which was how they pronounced the word twill  (“a fabric constructed of twill weave”). Eventually, tweed  and  twill  became synonymous as it gained the meaning we all know today.

This one goes way back—even farther back than the usual “back in the day.”

It seems there was a Roman philosopher by the name of Cicero, who died in 43 BC. He wrote two “Letters to Atticus,” and they contained the word sittybas  (or maybe sittubas) . There’s some debate on that, it seems. This was a Greek word meaning a “ label  for   a   papyrus   roll.”

However, it’s suspected that one printing of this work misspelled it as syllabus . The spelling stuck, and so it began to also mean “a label for a papyrus roll” as well. This morphed into its current meaning: (“an outline or other brief statement of the main points of a discourse, the subjects of a course of lectures, the contents of a curriculum, etc.”) in the mid-1600s.

Cairbow slipped into an early 20th-century proof of the Oxford English Dictionary in an example sentence for the word glare : “It (the Cairbow) then suddenly squats upon its haunches, and slides along the glare-ice.” But, what is a Cairbow ? Some rare creature that lives in the caves of the North Pole? Sounds fierce!

Nope, just a mistake—they meant to say caribou , as in “a really big deer.”

Somehow, someway, back in 1587, abacot made it into the second edition of Holinshed’s Chronicles , a book on British history. About 300 years later, the word was discovered by the editor of the Oxford English Dictionary as a typo of the word bycoket , which is “a cap or head-dress.”

That’s a really big typo . . . .

Momblishness

You might expect this one has to do with your mom. Did she do something silly, like send you a Halloween card for your birthday? Oh, that’s just some momblishness .

Nope, nothing to do with dear old mom. The Oxford English Dictionary cites this as “explained as: muttering talk.” It does sound like mumble , too.

The OED puts it down to “scribal error” of “the plural of ‘ne-moubliemie,’ French for the forget-me-not flower.”

Mountweazel

Sometimes, words aren’t the only fictional things that show up in historical and educational works of information. In 1975, the New Columbia Encyclopedia included an entry on one Lillian Virginia Mountweazel, supposedly an American fountain designer who did a photo book about rural American mailboxes. The encyclopedia wrote that sadly, she died in an explosion while working on a piece for Combustibles magazine. (This should have been a tip-off to some.)

Miss Lillian was a totally fictional creation, yet she may show up in other encyclopedias and reference books. This was proof that others “borrowed” from New Columbia. Ahem.

This word appeared (or mistakenly appeared, perhaps?) in the Edinburgh Review , in the context of a sentence referring to Hindus stabbing their hands with kimes . Hm, is that going to leave a mark?

While the natural assumption would be that a kime is some sinister torture device, it was just a typo for the word knives .

There is such a thing as morse code , of course. And, we define morse   itself as “a clasp or brooch used to fasten a cape in the front.” However, in this instance, morse  was a misinterpretation of the common word nurse .

Sir Walter Scott’s 1821 book The Monastery  contained the sentence, “‘Dost thou so soon morse thoughts of slaughter?'” It was supposed to say nurse , as in “to nurture” or “to care for.”

Phantomnation

Phantomnation  appeared in the 1864 edition of Webster’s. They called it a rare word meaning “‘the appearance of a phantom, illusion,” and attributed it to the poet Alexander Pope in his translation of The Odyssey , which contained the line “all the phantom nations of the dead.”

A man named Richard Paul Jodrell made a habit of consolidating two-word phrases, and he did it to “phantom nation” for his 1820 title Philology of the English Language , which then caused it to appear in the dictionary in that form.

Python in Excel is gradually rolling out to Excel for Windows customers using the Beta Channel. At this time, the feature is not available on other platforms.

Start using Python 

To begin using Python in Excel, select a cell and on the  Formulas  tab, select Insert Python . This tells Excel that you want to write a Python formula in the selected cell. 

Or use the function =PY in a cell to enable Python. After entering =PY in the cell, choose PY from the function AutoComplete menu with the Down arrow and Tab keys, or add an opening parenthesis to the function: =PY( . Now, you can enter Python code directly into the cell. The following screenshot shows the AutoComplete menu with the PY function selected.

Once Python is enabled in a cell, that cell displays a green PY icon. The formula bar displays the same PY icon when the Python cell is selected. See the following screenshot for an example. 

Combine Python with Excel cells and ranges

To reference Excel objects in a Python cell, make sure the Python cell is in Edit mode, and then select the cell or range that you want to include in the Python formula. This automatically populates the Python cell with the address of the cell or range that you selected. 

Tip:  Use the keyboard shortcut F2 to toggle between Enter mode and Edit mode in Python cells. Toggling to Edit mode allows you edit the Python formula, and toggling to Enter mode allows you to select additional cells or ranges with your keyboard.

Python in Excel uses the custom Python function xl() to interface between Excel and Python. The xl() function accepts Excel objects like ranges, tables, queries, and names.

You can also directly type references into a Python cell with the xl() function. For example, to reference cell A1 use xl("A1") and for the range B1:C4 use xl("B1:C4") . For a table with headers named MyTable , use xl("MyTable[#All]", headers=True) . The [#All]  specifier ensures that the entire table is analyzed in the Python formula, and headers=True ensures that the table headers are processed correctly. The following image shows a Python in Excel calculation adding the values of cell A1 and B1 , with the Python result returned in cell C1 . 

Formula bar 

Use the formula bar for code-like editing behavior, like using the Enter key to create new lines. Expand the formula bar using the down arrow icon to view multiple lines of code at once. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+U to expand the formula bar. The following screenshots show a formula bar before and after expanding it to view multiple lines of Python code.

Output types 

Use the Python output menu in the formula bar to control how Python calculations are returned. Return calculations as Python objects or convert calculations to Excel values and output them directly to a cell. The following screenshot shows the Python formula returned as an Excel value. 

Tip:  You can also use the right-click menu to change the Python output type. Open the right-click menu and go to Python Output, and then select the desired output type.

The following screenshot shows the same Python formula as the preceding screenshot, now returned as a Python object. When a formula is returned as a Python object, the cell displays a card icon.

Note:  Formula results returned to Excel values are translated to their closest Excel equivalent. If you plan to reuse the result in a future Python calculation, it’s recommended to return the result as a Python object. Returning a result as Excel values allows you to run Excel analytics, such as Excel charts, formulas, and conditional formatting, on the value.

A Python object contains additional information within the cell. To view the additional information, open the card by selecting the card icon. The information displayed on the card is a preview of the object, which is useful when processing large objects.

Python in Excel can return many types of data as Python objects. A useful Python in Excel data type is a DataFrame object. To learn more about Python DataFrames, see Python in Excel DataFrames .  

External data 

To import external data, use the Get & Transform feature in Excel. Get & Transform uses Power Query  to import external data. All the data you process with Python in Excel must come from your worksheet or through Power Query. For more information, see Use Power Query data with Python in Excel . 

Important:  To protect your security, common external data functions in Python, such as pandas.read_csv and pandas.read_excel , aren’t compatible with Python in Excel. To learn more, see Data security and Python in Excel .

Calculation order 

Traditional Python statements calculate from top to bottom. Within a Python in Excel cell, Python statements do the same thing—they calculate from top to bottom. But in a Python in Excel worksheet, Python cells calculate in row-major order. The cell calculations run across a row (from column A to column XFD ), and then across each following row down the worksheet. 

Python statements are ordered, so each Python statement has an implicit dependency on the Python statement that immediately precedes it in the calculation order.  

The calculation order is important when defining and referencing variables in a worksheet, because you must define variables before you can reference them.  

Important:  The row-major calculation order also applies across worksheets within a workbook and is based on the order of the worksheets within the workbook. If you use multiple worksheets to analyze data with Python in Excel, make sure to include data and any variables storing data in cells and worksheets preceding the cells and worksheets that analyze that data.   

Recalculation 

When a dependent value of a Python cell changes, all Python formulas are recalculated sequentially. To suspend Python recalculations and improve performance, use either Partial Calculation or Manual Calculation mode. These modes allow you to trigger a calculation when you’re ready. To change this setting, go to the ribbon and select Formulas , then open Calculation Options . Next, select the desired calculation mode. The Partial Calculation and Manual Calculation modes suspend automatic recalculation for both Python and Data Tables.

Disabling automatic recalculation in a workbook during Python development can improve performance and individual Python cell calculation speeds. However, you must manually recalculate the workbook to ensure accuracy in each Python cell. There are three ways to manually recalculate a workbook in Partial Calculation or Manual Calculation mode.

Use the keyboard shortcut F9 .

Go to Formulas > Calculate Now in the ribbon.

Go to a cell with a stale value, displayed with strikethrough formatting, and select the error symbol next to that cell. Then select Calculate Now from the menu.

Python in Excel calculations can return errors such as #PYTHON!, #BUSY!, and #CONNECT! to Python cells. To learn more, see Troubleshoot Python in Excel errors .

What happens next now that Kevin McCarthy has been ousted as speaker

House votes to remove McCarthy as speaker

WASHINGTON — The House voted Tuesday to oust Kevin McCarthy from the speaker's chair, with Rep. Matt Gaetz and seven other conservatives joining all Democrats present to remove him.

What happens next?

First, a temporary speaker takes over

The Office of the Speaker has been declared vacant. This does not immediately trigger a new speaker election, however, because of a succession list McCarthy, R-Calif., submitted to the House clerk in January. That list isn't public.

But Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., revealed shortly after McCarthy was removed that his name tops that list. McHenry will now serve as a temporary replacement under House rules.

Since 2003 , House rules have required the speaker to submit a list of names to the clerk of members to act in the case of his or her vacancy. According to Rule I, clause 8 of the House rules, the next person on that list “shall act as Speaker pro tempore until the election of a Speaker or a Speaker pro tempore.” We now know that's Patrick McHenry; he'll take over as speaker in an acting capacity.

This is a different situation than in January, when the House started a new session and could not start any legislative business until a speaker was elected. Because it was the beginning of a new Congress, the House needed to elect a speaker in order to swear in members and pass the rules package.

McHenry suggested that members should meet in their party conferences before deciding on the path forward. An election for a permanent speaker could be delayed until the House is better prepared.

The House in uncharted territory

This is the first time in U.S. history that a speaker of the House has been voted out of office.

In 1910, Speaker Joseph Cannon, R-Ill., offered a motion to oust himself to put his detractors on the record. Republicans voted overwhelmingly to keep him in office. “Cannon, Shorn of His Power, Keeps Office,” read the  New York Times headline  the next day.

McHenry, as speaker pro tempore, is now in untested waters.

The acting speaker is unlikely to have the same powers as the speaker since "the intention was for them to act in a short-term capacity while the House selected a new speaker," said Catholic University professor Matthew Green, author of "The Speaker of the House: A Study of Leadership."

How quickly could the House move to elect a permanent speaker?

House rules do not lay out how long the speaker pro tempore can remain in power before the chamber votes on a new permanent speaker.

The House could proceed soon to the election of a new speaker or decide to hold it at a later time.

“In the event of a vacancy in the speakership, there is no time frame that the House must follow to elect a new speaker,” Green said earlier Tuesday. “However, as a practical matter, the House will want to elect a new speaker quickly in order for the chamber to move forward with its legislative business.”

There were some hints that McHenry was next in line

On Jan. 9 , the House chair announced “that the Speaker has delivered to the Clerk a letter dated January 7, 2023, listing Members in the order in which each shall act as Speaker pro tempore." Essentially McCarthy gave a list of names of members he would want to act in his absence if he was no longer able to serve. These names were not public, so there was no way to know who is on the list until the speakership is vacant.

But separately in January, McCarthy also appointed members to act as speaker pro tempore to sign enrolled bills. These names were made public in the Congressional Record, offering a look at who McCarthy trusts in his absence.

McHenry, a top McCarthy ally who also helped lead debt ceiling negotiations on his behalf, was at the top of that list.

Also on the list were: Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina; Rep. Adrian Smith, of Nebraska; Rep. Robert Wittman, of Virginia; Rep. Andy Harris, of Maryland; and Reps. John Joyce and Guy Reschenthaler, of Pennsylvania, to act as speaker pro tempore to sign enrolled bills. These members are typically chosen mostly for one of two reasons: because they are allies of the speaker's or because of their districts' proximity to Washington, so they can preside over pro forma sessions when the House is out.

The scale and complexity of Saturday’s attacks by Hamas shocked leaders across the world. They came after decades of a relentless and deadly conflict that has killed thousands of people, forced entire generations to grow up under occupation, or created constant anxiety of impending rocket fire or bombings.

Here is a summary of the main events of the conflict, which spans two centuries.

On several occasions this year, hundreds of Israeli forces carried out military raids in the Palestinian city of Jenin. In January, a Palestinian man killed seven people outside a synagogue in East Jerusalem.

After a spate of terrorist attacks in Israeli cities in 2022, Israeli forces killed at least 166 Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

In May 2021, the Israeli police raided Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, the third-holiest site in Islam, which set off an 11-day war between Israel and Hamas that killed more than 200 Palestinians and more than 10 Israelis.

In 2018, at least 170 Palestinians were killed as Israel responded to protests along the barrier fence that separates Gaza and Israel.

In 2014, Hamas kidnapped and killed three Israeli teenagers, prompting attacks from Israel, and rocket launches from Gaza, in a conflict that killed more than 1,881 Palestinians and more than 60 Israelis.

In November 2012, Israel killed Ahmed al-Jabari, Hamas’s military chief, setting off more than a week of an exchange of fire in which more than 150 Palestinians and at least six Israelis are killed.

In January 2009, Israel and Palestinian groups declared unilateral cease-fires , then Israel withdrew from Gaza, and redeployed to the strip’s perimeter.

In response to rocket fire from Gaza, Israel launched an attack on Hamas targets in December 2008 that killed 200 Palestinians. Shortly after, they opened a ground war against Hamas. In total, 1,200 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed.

In January 2006, about a year after the death of the Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat, the co-founder of the paramilitary organization Fatah, Hamas won the Palestinian parliamentary election. One year later, Hamas seized control of Gaza , routing the Fatah forces.

In September 2005, Israeli troops pulled out of Gaza, but Israel came under criticism for restricting the movement of Palestinians coming in and out of the strip.

In September 2000, a few months after negotiations between Israel and Palestine reached an impasse at Camp David, a Second Intifada began, with Palestinian youth throwing stones at the Israeli police. Support for Hamas continued to grow within Palestine because of its readiness to fight Israel.

In 1997, two suicide bomb attacks killed 27 people, and Israel’s prime minister, Shimon Peres, said he would wage an incessant war against Hamas.

In 1993, Mr. Arafat signed the Oslo accords with Israel , and committed to negotiating an end to the conflict based on a two-state solution. Hamas, which opposed the deal, launched a series of suicide bombings in Israel.

In December 1987, Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza started the First Intifada against Israel. Muslim Brotherhood members founded Hamas.

On March 26, 1979, Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty at the White House which led to Israel’s complete withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula. The two countries agreed on the framework of an agreement to allow for self-rule for Palestinians living in occupied territories. Three years later, President Reagan expressed his support for their full autonomy with some Jordanian supervision, but Israel rejected the plan.

On Yom Kippur in October 1973, invading forces from Egypt and Syria tried to persuade Israel to negotiate better terms for the Arab countries. Nearly 2,700 Israeli soldiers died in the 19-day war and thousands were injured out of a population of about three million at the time.

In June 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israel gained control of the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula.

In January 1957, Israel withdrew from Egyptian land , except from the Gaza Strip and the area of the Gulf of Aqaba, arguing that the Gaza Strip never belonged to Egypt.

In October 1956, a few months after the Egyptian president nationalized the Suez Canal waterway, cutting off Israel from shipping, Israel invaded the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip. In November that year, the United Nations called for Britain, France and Israel to withdraw their troops from Egypt.

In 1949, the newly created State of Israel signed a series of truces with Arab countries that had declared war on it. Under the 1949 agreements, the Gaza Strip was under Egypt’s control.
