BROKER'S COMMENTS

Named after one of the brightest of stars, the William Fife III schooner ALTAIR’s near mythical status in the classic yacht world is all for very good reason - this yacht has become the standard-bearer for the cause of authenticity since her landmark restoration in 1987. While important as the yacht that started what has become the classic yacht revival, that role is as nothing to her own status at the top of this hierarchy. ALTAIR is the ultimate vintage yacht – and surely one of the world’s most beautiful works of mind and hand. Always the darling of the classic regatta fleet and often winning her class, in more recent years she has succeeded in paying homage to her original owner’s unfulfilled desire to safely sail to the South Sea Islands. Her dimensions have allowed for the modern comforts that a smaller classic will not; all discreetly concealed and allowing her to cruise anywhere. Above all, she is blessed with the spirit engendered by her original designer, the incomparable William Fife III. As one of the very few classic yachts of her vintage afloat with unbroken Lloyd's ✠100A1 classification, having passed survey again with flying colours in 2021, ALTAIR is in her element - as ready to cruise the world as she is for racing.

2021 SURVEYOR'S COMMENT

"[ALTAIR] presents in exceptional condition for a vessel that is now over 90 years old and is a tribute to the shipyard’s build quality and a credit to [her] owners and her crew that a vessel of this age is found to be in such pristine condition."

ALTAIR HISTORY 1930 to 1985

WILLIAM FIFE & SON YARD No. 789 - Launch date: May 15th 1931 - Built to Lloyd's ✠18A1 ✠LMC By 1930, 74-year-old William Fife Junior (“III”) may well have presumed his days of designing and his yard building such a vessel - a beautiful throwback to the pre-First World War heyday of the large schooner yacht - were over, particularly in the midst of the Great Depression. But until 1931 yacht building on the Clyde had continued to ride a post First World War high; and some clients were simply impervious to world financial trends. ALTAIR’s commissioning owner, 45-year-old retired cavalry officer Captain Guy Hardy MacCaw’s family fortune came from the east: the highly lucrative manufacture and trade in jute by their Calcutta-based firm Kettlewell, Bullen & Co. MacCaw was born in Calcutta in 1886, but followed a British military career as a Lancers and Hussars officer after his father became a successful Liberal politician and Member of the UK Parliament. That MacCaw’s military career is rather foggy to research may back up handed down tales from long gone members of ALTAIR’s original crew that he had been in Military Intelligence, and that T.E. Lawrence of Arabia had been an on board guest. Fluent in Russian, MacCaw is believed to have been a close aide to Lord Kitchener and Brigadier-General John Hanbury-Williams in UK/ Russia negotiations during the First World War, and - possibly working with Altair's next owner Walter Runciman - in discussions with Nazi Germany in the years leading to the Second World War. However, McCaw’s cloak and dagger exploit most relevant to our story was successfully hiding until March 1931 that he was Fife’s client for the 108 ft schooner in build 1930-1931 at Fairlie, two months before her launch. McCaw’s apparent tendency to spend well beyond his perceived means was revealed during that winter when a financial legal case against him by his estranged first wife hit the headlines. The case was settled in February 1931 with the ALTAIR connection apparently unknown. MacCaw’s desire - recorded for posterity in a letter to William Fife Jr that is on board - was for a boat “capable of sailing to the South Sea Islands with no anxiety.” He got that for sure, but Altair only finally sailed the Pacific Ocean quite recently, in present ownership. Guy McCaw may have enjoyed ALTAIR for only two seasons, occasionally racing on the Solent and cruising no further south than deep into the Bay of Biscay, to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, but his dream ship became everyone’s dream ship. Perhaps through political affiliations, early in 1933 ownership in ALTAIR transferred to Royal Yacht Squadron member, shipowner and prominent Liberal politician The Right Hon. Walter Runciman, M.P., of Doxford Hall, Chat Hill, Northumberland and the Hebridean Isle of Eigg. Runciman was no stranger to Fife schooners, his father, also Walter, having commissioned the similarly sized schooner ASTHORE from Fife in 1902. In Runciman’s ownership, ALTAIR cruised the extended English Channel and the west coast of Scotland. In 1938, 'Bristol' aircraft and vehicle manufacturer William George Verdon-Smith, CBE, became ALTAIR’s third owner. Her home mooring may have been at Poole, Dorset, where his family had a substantial summerhouse at Sandbanks. In Verdon-Smith’s ownership ALTAIR was requisitioned by the UK Admiralty to participate in the war effort, it is believed in anti-submarine and/or de-gaussing work. She survived, of course, and in 1949, by now Sir W.G. Verdon-Smith sold her to José Augusto Mendonça e Vasconcelos of Lisbon; the start of ALTAIR’s long association with the Iberian Peninsula. After a period recorded owned by a Swiss bank, in 1952 ALTAIR fell into the hands of the couple who would preserve her almost complete originally in a 34 year love affair of gentle cruising in the Western Mediterranean out of Barcelona: textile entrepreneurs Miguel Sans Mora & Maria Esther Sans Avecedo. ©2024 Iain McAllister/ Sandeman Yacht Company Ltd.

ALTAIR HISTORY 1985 to PRESENT

RELAUNCHED AT SOUTHAMPTON YACHT SERVICES, SOUTHAMPTON, 7 July 1987 ALTAIR's purchase from Miguel Sans Mora in 1985 by Swiss inventor, businessman and car collector Albert Obrist, and her subsequent authentic but practical restoration at Southampton Yacht Services, began with a chance meeting; the kind that was bound to result in something special. The revival of interest in older, classic yachts was in its infancy when Obrist chartered the Fife ketch BELLE AVENTURE in Sardinia in the mid 1980s. BELLE AVENTURE's captain at this time, Paul Goss, had Fife evangelists Donn Costanzo and Jeffrey Law among the crew, and all three knew that ALTAIR was available to be restored. After an epic voyage from Barcelona to Southampton that revealed much of what ALTAIR urgently needed, she hauled out at Shamrock Quay (the site of the old Camper & Nicholsons Northam yard, formerly J.G. Fay & Co.) for a major 18-month restoration led by Captain Paul Goss that set a new bar in authenticity carefully married to keeping ALTAIR practical and comfortable by modern standards. After re-launch in the summer of 1987 ALTAIR's life changed forever, with a sailing programme far removed from her gentle first half century, but nothing more than William Fife designed and built her for. Apart from, of course, looking like new, the most noticeable feature was her suit of "Altair Cream" Dacron sails by her original sailmakers, Ratsey & Lapthorn of Cowes - made to look like the original cotton suit. She became a regular at the growing number of Classic yacht regattas on both North Atlantic coasts. In 1993 ALTAIR returned to Spanish ownership with highly successful businessman Alberto Cortina. Through the mid to late 1990s she gained a reputation as an incredibly efficient sailing machine, with Mediterranean duels against the Alfred Mylne ketch THENDARA and the Herreshoff gaff schooner MARIETTE becoming the stuff of legend. After a quieter period berthed at Antibes, in 2005 ALTAIR was purchased by Californian commercials and music video director Joe Pytka who had fallen head over heels in love and put her through a major refit at Fairlie Restorations after which she sailed to the waters of her birth and won the 2008 Fife Regatta on the Firth of Clyde. ALTAIR then enjoyed Mediterranean and Caribbean seasons with countless regatta successes. In 2015 she was line honours and corrected time overall winner of the Panerai Transat Classique, sailing the 3000 miles from Lanzarote, Canary Islands to Fort-de-France, Martinique in 13 days, 3 hours, 12 minutes, 53 seconds, at an average speed of 8.8 knots. Later that year ALTAIR entered the current ownership of a Fife connoisseur. During the past seven years she finally accomplished Guy MacCaw's dream, sailing all the way down to New Zealand. New Zealand's strict handling of the Covid pandemic put paid to further voyaging, and she was shipped back to Europe in 2022. ©2024 Iain McAllister/ Sandeman Yacht Company Ltd.

OWNER AND GUEST ACCOMMODATION

The original French polished walnut interior of ALTAIR is considered one of the most beautiful and authentic in any yacht. The panelling, door furniture and bathroom fittings are all from 1931. In 2007 all nickel and chrome interior fittings were removed and re-plated with her interior freshly French polished and hand painted. And again 2020-2022, while in enforced layup during New Zealand's long Covid pandemic lockdown, all interior surfaces were stripped and refinished with French polish, varnish and paint as appropriate. In summary the accommodation below has an owner’s suite, guest VIP suite; small double cabin, two guest single cabins, skipper’s cabin and crew quarters for 7. There are two head compartments, a separate shower, a day head and head with bath and shower. The original Blake WC has been beautifully preserved, but while appearing to be manual, it is actually electrically operated. From the spacious deck house – over the engine room, companionway steps descend to a corridor from which the principal accommodation is accessed. Immediately to each side are single berth guest cabins, both attractively laid out. Next forward to port is the owner’s bathroom with WC, large bath and drop down wash basin. Opposite across the corridor is a shower room, easily reached from the guest cabins. Again to port is a day head compartment and then the navigation and chart space with a guest stateroom with generous long single berth, washbasin and furniture. Forward of the shower to starboard are two guest staterooms, one of which is a double and each fully furnished, also with washbasins. The doorway forward opens to the main saloon; panelled and magnificently furnished with seating both sides, generous cabinets and to starboard the dining table.

The Shipyard Work & Yacht Design of Luxury Yacht ALTAIR

W & RB Fife was the naval architecture company involved in the formal superyacht design work for ALTAIR. Also the company W & RB Fife expertly worked on this venture. In 1931 she was formally launched to triumph in Fairlie and post sea trials and final completion was afterwards handed over to the owner who commissioned her. Fife & completed their new build sailing yacht in the United Kingdom. A reasonable proportion is brought about with a widest beam (width) of 6.25 metres or 20.5 ft. With a 4.02m (13.2ft) draught (maximum depth) she is deep. The material teak/oak frames was used in the building of the hull of the sailing yacht. Her superstructure above deck is created out of teak. Over the deck of ALTAIR she is 32.86 (107.8 ft) in length. In 2008 extra refitting and updating was in addition performed.

Historical:

Sandeman – Named after one of the brightest of stars ALTAIR’s near mythical status in the classic yacht world is all for very good reason – this yacht has become the standard bearer for the cause of authenticity since her landmark restoration in 1987.

William Fife III may have saved his best until last. Commissioned as an ocean going cruising boat for the southern seas and her designer’s last big boat, Fife could not help but create a blend of breathtaking beauty; fast safe and totally capable.

ALTAIR built by William Fife & Sons at Fairlie as yard number 789, was launched in May 1931. She was effectively a descendent of the famous fleet of big yachts that had revitalized schooner racing around the turn of the 19th century – William Fife’s own CICELY and SUZANNE having been notable members of that fleet. More specifically, ALTAIR’s origins lie in her first owner Captain H. MacCaw’ desire for “a sound, safe cruiser; safe to go to the South Sea Islands with no difficulty’ thus expressed in his brief to William Fife in 1929.

sailing yacht altair

In the event the elderly MacCaw never undertook the world voyage he had planned, and after two years of ownership, sold her to Walter Runciman (later Viscount Runciman) Liberal MP for St. Ives. Having sailed her on the south coast of England and west coast of Scotland, he in turn sold her in 1938 to Sir William Verdon-Smith who enjoyed her for two seasons until she was bought by the Admiralty to play her part in the war effort. Post war, ALTAIR was extensively refitted and was to leave British waters under Portuguese ownership passing then to Miguel Sans Mora to be based in Barcelona until acquired by her next owners in 1985. It is largely thanks to Sans Mora’s great love for ALTAIR that during his 34 years of ownership, she was maintained in the tradition of her original build through that difficult period of “old but not yet classic”.

It was new owner Albert Obrist who, with project manager Paul Goss and Duncan Walker committed ALTAIR with almost obsessive attention to detail to the now famous restoration at Southampton Yacht Services on her owner’s insistence on absolute faithfulness to the original design – some of this dedicated and hand picked team would in due course go on to create Fairlie Restorations.

With extensive shipwrighting work complete, her walnut interior was refinished and all fittings including her original heads were restored to working order. Her rig which had been slightly shortened was restored to the full length by scarphing into the original spars. The dyed cream Dacron was developed by sail makers Ratsey & Lapthorn to resemble Egyptian cotton reflecting Obrist’s desire even for the sails to appear original. This was soon copied by other classic yachts.

ALTAIR then acquired by a well known Spanish family, was sold again in 2005 to her current American owner, who has cherished the yacht, doing everything to maintain her exactly as she should be; enjoying Mediterranean and Caribbean seasons with countless regatta successes.

Restoration:

1985-87 Southhampton Yacht Services – The restoration kept faithful to the original design. Her rig had been restored to her original height by scarfing new lengths on to the original spars. The sails were even dyed to resemble Egyptian cotton. The refit and launch of sailing yacht Altair , Pendennis 1995.

Elegant and classic appearance with top comfort and seaworthiness. Highest quality construction according to the Germanische Lloyd classification standards by Gouwerok yard and completed by the Royal Nordia van Dam, one of the top Dutch quality yards.

Her first owner developed this custom built Nordia in close cooperation with the Nordia van Dam shipyard in 1987, according to his specific and demanding needs for a quality and comfortable ocean cruising sailing yacht. This owner registered the ‘Cornelia of Pretoria’ under UK flag and sailed her for 30 years, all around the world, while maintaining her in top condition.

In 2017 the current owner acquired the Nordia from the first owner including all documentation of the initial building and all modifications and maintenance afterwards. The new owner was specifically searching a yacht with all the quality aspects of top Dutch yards as the perfect candidate for a total refit.

Special Features :

During the 2017-2020 refit in Zaandam, The Netherlands, the base of a quality aluminum ocean going sailing yacht was renewed to the current standards on systems, electronics, navigation systems and interior. The refit was also driven to achieve an MCA certification according to MGN-280 code and Malta Yacht code, to be able to offer commercial operation in unrestricted area’s (ocean). Also was chosen to certify according to European CE standards with a post construction certificate. Both codes were surveyed and approved by Mecal UK and ECB, The Netherlands.

After the refit the yacht was named ‘Altaïr’ and registered under the Dutch flag. Due to the MCA and Malta yacht code standards, future owners can choose to re-register under a UK or Malta flag to be able to perform commercial operations, such as charter.

The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

sailing yacht altair

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

sailing yacht altair

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

sailing yacht altair

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

A man with dark hair wears navy blue and white clothing as the captain of a large windjammer sailing vessel. He stands on deck, a walkie-talkie-like device in his hand, beneath the ropes and riggings of the vessel's sails.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

sailing yacht altair

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.
