Don Juan II: The Only Michelin-Starred Cruise on the Seine

There are Seine river cruises, and then there’s the Don Juan II. Moored at Passerelle Debilly opposite the Eiffel Tower, this historic Art Deco yacht is kitted out with fireplaces, framed paintings and a wood-paneled bar from where you can order a flute of Champagne before your dinner cruise. Designed by the Maison Pierre Frey, it’s all elegance- down to the gold-colored curtains framing the windows. What’s more, there are only 12 tables (maximum capacity of 38 guests) so it’s an intimate affair.

But let’s talk about the food, shall we? It’s a truth universally acknowledged that river cruises have mediocre, ho-hum cuisine (after all, the view is the star of the show). Yet on the Don Juan II, the food is so good, it’s a distraction- you end up paying more attention to your plate than the stunning scenery out the window.

That’s because Chef Frédéric Anton is at the helm. He’s the culinary maestro who holds three Michelin stars at Le Pré Catelan in the 16th, and one star at Le Jules Verne , the gastronomic hot spot atop the Eiffel Tower. In fact, he’s also been awarded a Michelin star for the Don Juan II- making it the only Seine river cruise to hold such an honor.

What’s on the dinner menu? It’s a glorious culinary parade with dishes staggered so they served in front of each major landmark: the Musée d’Orsay, the Monnaie de Paris, Notre-Dame, Hotel de Ville, the Conciergerie and the Louvre . Ingredients are seasonal, so the menu reflects what’s being grown at the moment. To wit: amuse-bouches of fried artichoke with anchovy cream, a flan-like marvel with fennel and caviar topped with elderflowers, a crab delicacy resembling an apple meringue, the signature langoustine ravioli topped with a golden jelly, and pan-fried lamb with morel mushrooms in a Jura wine sauce. To cap off your feast, the chocolate soufflé with pistachio ice cream is sublime.

Oceanco’s 295-foot Dar , meaning “gift” in Russian, made its world debut at the 2018 Monaco Yacht Show. Robb Report stepped aboard at the time, and toured the yacht with Valentina Zannier, head of interior design for Nuvolari Lenard, which was tasked with creating a subtle, one-of-a-kind interior. As well as 120 different fabrics and 24 saddle leathers, the interior includes maple veneer, limed ash, and sycamore that is dyed gray.

Exterior styling by Miami-based designer Luiz de Basto Design takes inspiration from nature, notably a hammerhead shark. The interior focuses on detail and craftsmanship, calling upon some of the world’s best outfitters and artisans to bring the original owner’s vision for a marine-led environment to life. Emphasis is placed on balancing sea views with guest privacy. This is best exemplified on the owner’s aft deck, which features a rotating sofa that can spin 360 degrees to capture the best vistas. It is flanked by “privacy glass” balustrades.

Based in Monaco for the summer, Dar is currently listed for sale with Large Yacht Corp for around $223 million. Here are 10 things you didn’t know about one of the largest yachts on the brokerage market.

Transparent Design

When Dar delivered in July 2018, it featured the latest advances in glass technology. The aluminum superstructure is covered in 4,300 square feet of dark, reflective glass, which lets the owner see out but gawkers can’t see in. The six-foot-by-10-foot glass panels are fastened to the superstructure using a special glue and sealant, a novel process that needed to be approved by Lloyd’s. There are 186 windows in the superstructure, 28 of which are double curved. The recurring theme of glass is also evident throughout the interior, particularly in the floor-to-ceiling windows and the glass elevator floor by Benvenuto Artglass. 

Shark Attack

The natural world was a key source of inspiration for Dar’ s exterior designer, Luiz de Basto. “The yacht’s curved main superstructure is made of a black, continuous organic form that reminded me of a shark, so I decided to shape the mast like a dorsal fin, and everything else just flows from there,” de Basto tells Robb Report . “When you view the boat from above, the wing stations resemble a hammerhead.” Fittingly, Dar was known as Project Shark until its delivery.

Marine World

The owner’s interior brief asked for a “balanced combination of visual themes from nature,” such as blossoms, feathers, and sea life: Italian studio Nuvolari Lenard answered with fish, leaves, olive trees, blossoms and waves in myriad materials. There are glass artworks, sculpted leather wall panels by English artist Helen Amy Murray, and a theatrical staircase with bas-relief fish made from Venetian plaster (pictured) by DKT Artworks. The walls of the guest corridors are covered in oak trees that were sculpted from plaster using a special spatula technique and then painted by hand.

The cinema in the sky lounge has more than 1,300 films available. But if that fails to keep guests entertained, the games table (pictured) in the main salon is guaranteed to bring late-night revelry.

Waiting in Style

The side-entrance lobby, dressed in organic sea life shapes, is a welcoming area for guests stepping on and off the yacht, with high interior ceilings that reach up to almost eight feet in some areas.

Being Served

The formal dining table in the main salon seats up to 18 guests and features striking resin and metal art panels by British firm Based Upon. There is more outdoor dining on the upper deck aft, where taupe chunky knit chairs and bright pops of red, soft furnishings bring style to the table.

Dar sleeps 14 guests across six cabins, including two VIP cabins and four double cabins, each with en suite bathrooms. The private owner’s suite on the upper deck has a bathroom, a dressing room finished in palladium, and a private deck with Jacuzzi encased in tinted privacy glass. Other flourishes and finishes include “blossomed art glass” by DKT and ornate glass surfaces crafted by List GC.

Gracious Transportation

Dar has two 34-foot “mini-me” custom tenders by Hodgdon Yachts—one a covered limousine and the other open—which echo the design of the mothership. When covered, the upper-deck pool, which has a waterfall and swimming jet, converts into a helipad for guests arriving by air transfer.  

Pamper Perfect

On the lower deck, the family wellness area includes a large hammam, a sauna with a sea view, a gym, and a spa and massage room decorated with intricately stitched and painted wall art. A beach club at the stern is where guests access the vessel’s many toys.

Technical Innovations

The 22 tons of glass was not the only technological first aboard Dar . The Oceanco was also the first yacht in the Netherlands to have the official Lloyd’s Register Integrated Bridge System (IBS) notation, designating its advanced pilothouse.

PARÍS (AP) — Los sitios icónicos sobran en los Juegos Olímpicos de París.

Desde el Palacio de Versalles a la Plaza de la Concordia, y por supuesto, la Torre Eiffel, los organizadores se han asegurado de que los monumentos más famosos de la Ciudad de la Luz acaparen el escenario durante los Juegos Olímpicos.

Las competencias se llevarán a cabo en pleno corazón de la ciudad, en el Río Sena y dentro de edificaciones históricas como el Grand Palais.

TORRE EIFFEL

El prominente revolucionario Maximilien Robespierre se encontró con el mismo destino un año más tarde. También fue el hogar del Obelisco de Luxor durante casi 200 años.

El gloriosamente decorado puente Pont Alexandre III conecta las orillas derecha e izquierda del río Sena. Es el nombre más común del Hôtel des Invalides, que alberga la tumba de Napoleón.

Un paraíso para entusiastas militares, el muy admirado monumento de París tiene un domo gigante dorado sobre 107 metros (351 pies) y está cubierto con aproximadamente 13 kilogramos (29 libras) de láminas de oro. Tal vez sea apropiado, debido a su sensación militar, que los arqueros olímpicos ajusten sus enfoques aquí.

PARQUE DE LOS PRÍNCIPES

Un estadio con capacidad para 48.000 espectadores es la casa del club de fútbol Paris Saint-Germain y donde el astro nacional Kylian Mbappé jugó durante siete temporadas antes de marcharse del club este año. Francia recibe partidos de fútbol y de rugby en “Le Parc”.

Hace 40 años, la leyenda del fútbol Michel Platini condujo a Francia hacia su primer título de la Eurocopa en ese estadio. El Parc des Princes recibirá partidos de fútbol durante los Juegos de París, incluyendo la final masculina y la femenina, el 9 y 10 de agosto, respectivamente.

STADE DE FRANCE

Otro grande del fútbol francés, Zinedine Zidane, siempre tendrá un lugar especial en la historia del Stade de France. El volante anotó el primer gol cuando fue inaugurado el estadio nacional de Francia en 1998. Semanas después ese año celebró el primer título de Francia en una Copa del Mundo, luego de anotar dos goles en la victoria de 3-0 sobre Brasil en la final.

El estadio de 80.000 espectadores albergó el mundial de atletismo en 2003, además de múltiples partidos internacionales de fútbol y rugby. Será la sede de las competiciones de atletismo en una nueva apariencia con una pista de color morado, además de los partidos de rugby sevens.

STADE VÉLODROME

“A jamais les premiers” (Por siempre el primero). Así es como los fanáticos apasionados del Marsella incitan a los seguidores del enriquecido archirrival Paris Saint-Germain, recordándoles que el Marsella sigue siendo el primer (y único) equipo francés en ganar la Liga de Campeones, en 1993.

El Stade Vélodrome de Marsella con capacidad aforo de 67.000 presume de uno de los ambientes más fervientes en el fútbol europeo y recibe un total de 10 partidos de fútbol olímpico, incluyendo dos semifinales.

DÉFENSE ARENA

Situado cerca de un vibrante centro económico, alrededor de 11 kilómetros al noroeste del centro de París, el escenario en forma de bote acogió seminarios y partidos de clubes de rugby del Racing 92 desde el 2017.

Ahora será sede de la natación olímpica gracias a su estructura multiuso. La fachada de la arena está hecha de aluminio y escamas de vidrio, y luce impresionante cuando está encendida de noche.

STADE YVES-DU MANOIR

El estadio está localizado al noroeste del suburbio de Colombes y une al pasado olímpico de la ciudad con su presente. En 1924 fue la sede principal de los Juegos de París. Esta vez más discreto acogerá partidos de hockey sobre césped.

How to get here and opening times

• You will find the Don Juan II docked at Port Debilly, oppos­ite the Eiffel Tower on the Right Bank.
• The Don Juan II will host you from 7.45 pm until 8.15 pm on Tues­day to Saturday, book­ings only.
• A free private park­ing is avail­able in front of the Don Juan II (Port Debilly). If the latter is full, paid park­ing lots and a taxi drop-off are avail­able and nearby.
• Public trans­port: Metro station: Trocadéro (line 6) – Metro station Iéna (line 9) – RER Pont de l’Alma (RER C).
