United States Sail Grand Prix: How to watch, stream, time, channel for SailGP's first ever race in Chicago

Sailgp will hit navy pier as 10 national teams are set to compete in a high-speed race on lake michigan.

webp-net-resizeimage-3.jpg

This weekend's race may be the second of SailGP's third season, but a pair of firsts make it a must-see affair. The T-Mobile United States Sail Grand Prix Chicago is SailGP's first ever race in Chicago, and it's also the championship's first race to take place on fresh water.

Beginning at Navy Pier, 10 national teams in F-50 catamarans will race through Lake Michigan in a thrilling high-speed competition from June 18-19. The participating teams are Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and the U.S.

Anna Weis, who sailed for Team USA in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and is LSO slated to compete in this weekend's SailGP race, told CBS that fans should expect significantly more intense sailing than what they may see at home. The carbon fiber boats can travel up to 60 mph, so she isn't exaggerating.

"This is definitely some full-on sailing and not your leisurely everyday, go out and have fun, it is extremely fun, but there's a lot on and there's a lot of technicalities and teamwork that is required to make the boat go fast," Weis said.

Here's the full TV schedule for the T-Mobile United States Sail Grand Prix Chicago. The race can also be streamed on fuboTV (get access now) .

America’s Cup: Schedule and how to follow the racing

Toby Heppell

  • February 1, 2021

Finally, the America's Cup 2021 is in sight as Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli claimed victory in the Prada Cup. The Italian team will now take on Emirates Team New Zealand in the America's Cup proper.

yacht racing on tv today

The teams are there, the boats are there, and finally after two months of AC75 racing in Auckland, for the Prada Cup , we know the two teams who will race for the 36th America’s Cup , Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

The Prada Cup, as it is now named, used to be called the Louis Vuitton Cup – or Challenger Selection Series. The event’s purpose was to decide which of: Luna Rosa Prada Pirelli; INEOS Team UK; or American Magic would take on Emirates Team New Zealand in the 2021 America’s Cup.

Although INEOS Team UK won the Round Robin Series of the Prada Cup, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli defeated American Magic in the Prada Cup Semi-Final by four straight wins, and then defeated the Brits in the Prada Cup Final with an impressive 7-1 scoreline.

As the Defender of the America’s Cup Emirates Team New Zealand did not take part in the Prada Cup series.

What do we know?

With the Prada Cup now concluded we have a reasonable idea of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s strengths and weaknesses.

The Italian team has had a good run up to the Cup and, significantly, when they launched their second AC75 it was the closest to their first generation America’s Cup boat of all the teams, Defender included.

That they did not go down a new or different design route with their second boat indicates that they were happy with the performance and characteristics of their first attempt and their second boat represents a refinement of their initial concept.

Prada Cup: Luna Rossa win Semis with straight victories

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli today, Saturday 30th January, won the Prada Cup Semi-Final and will now progress to the Final…

There are two areas where Luna Rossa were unlike any of the challengers. The Italian team operates a boom-less setup for their mainsail, allowing significant depth in the sail down low and a very clean intersection with the deck. A conceptually similar approach to the mainsail foot has been taken by New Zealand on their second AC75.

This will provide good power in the sail low down where it is most beneficial and the lack of a boom also means the sail and deck interaction is very clean aerodynamically speaking.

The second unique feature on the Italian’s boat is the team’s double helmsman setup. Francesco Bruni steers the boat when on port tack and Jimmy Spithill steers when on starboard.

yacht racing on tv today

The team does not have a dedicated tactician with both the helmsmen and mainsail trimmer, Pietro Sibello, all interacting to make tactical decisions. During the Prada Cup Round Robins, which tended to be sailed in shiftier winds, this seemed to be a weakness and the team often made tactical errors.

However, the Italians do seem to have sharpened up in this area and looked stronger in the Semi-Final and Final. Both of these two events did feature more stable winds, however, so it was easier for a team to rely on boat speed. It remains to be seen if this will be a weakness going forward.

What the setup does offer, though is stability through manoeuvres. On all other boats the helmsman crossed the boat, which is then temporarily steered by another member of the crew. For the Italians, the only crew member crossing the boat in the manoeuvres is their mainsail trimmer. Theoretically, provided the transition from one helm to another is smooth enough – which it seems to be – the team can be quicker to settle onto a new tack or gybe after a manoeuvre.

Luna Rossa have shown themselves to be very quick in the lighter end of the wind scale and have also impressed generally upwind with a strong high mode allowing them increased tactical options.

The winder end of the conditions seem to be something of a weakness – the team has admitted as much in the past – but this is an area they have been working on. They have also, at times lacked a little downwind performance, here too we have seen recent improvements.

yacht racing on tv today

Trying to understand where Emirates Team New Zealand stand in terms of performance is a much harder proposition. The only time we have seen the New Zealand team racing an AC75 was back in December 2020 during the America’s Cup World Series and Christmas Race .

The Kiwis were by no means totally dominant and lost some of their races, however, it is reasonable to assume they did not want to give the challengers significant amounts of data upon which to compare the relative performance of each boat.

Even within the context that each boat was probably hiding some of their outright performance there were certainly times that the Kiwi outfit looked to have some impressive speed. Certainly of those on the ground in Auckland we have spoken to, the general consensus seems to be that Emirates Team New Zealand probably has the quickest AC75 on the water.

How does the America’s Cup work?

Now the Prada Cup has concluded, we are down to two boats, The Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, and the Challenger, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli. These two boats will now take part in the America’s Cup Match.

The competition is head-to-head Match Racing, with the winner being the first boat in the fleet to get to. As was the case for the final of the Prada Cup, the America’s Cup will be won by the first boat to reach seven wins.

Racing is scheduled to run mostly on weekends and in some cases in the week. Each race day has two races scheduled with the exception on the final day on Monday 15th March, which will be the tie-break race, should it be needed.

The first weekend of racing is on the weekend of 6th-7th March, then there are a further two races on Wednesday 10th March. In theory, should one team win every race, they could conclude the series by the first race of the day on Friday 12th March.

All this means that the second race on Friday 12th, the two on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th, and the final race on Monday 15th are all ‘if needed’ and so may not go ahead.

yacht racing on tv today

What is match racing?

As is tradition for America’s Cup racing as a whole, each of these races will see one team racing a single other team, or ‘match racing’ as it is known. Match Racing is a unique discipline in the sport of sailing and is explained well by INEOS Team UK sailing team member Matt ‘Catflap’ Cornwell in the video below.

How can I watch the America’s Cup?

All of the America’s Cup races will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, NBC Sports, TVNZ, RAI, and Sky Italia, as well as on the America’s Cup YouTube channel and Facebook page.

There is clearly no shortage of options available, the problem for European viewers is likely to be the timezone difference, with the America’s Cup racing taking place between 0300 and 0500 GMT, so if you want to watch live, you’d better set your alarm clock!

SailGP Grand Final: All you need to know - start times, odds, how to watch, live streaming

The New Zealand SailGP team will look to claim the season title in San Francisco this weekend. Photo / Ricardo Pinto / SailGP

Season three of SailGP reaches its climax on the waters of San Francisco this weekend, with one team set to claim the US$1 million prize.

While each stop on the circuit usually consists of five fleet races and a podium race – in which the top three teams on the event leaderboard after the five races contest for the top spot – there is no podium race for the San Francisco event.

The event is decided by the fleet races. The standings at the end of the fifth race dictate where each team places for the event, and their points are added to the overall standings. Once those points are added, the top three teams on the overall ladder will return to the water to compete in a standalone shootout for the season title.

So, it is the same format as every other event, but rather than the top three teams for the event going in to contest an event title in the last race of the weekend, the top three teams overall will contest the season title instead.

Heading into the final event of the season, Australia – the two-time defending SailGP champions – holds a big lead at the top of the table, and only an unsailable vessel can prevent them from contesting the three-way shootout.

The Kiwis sit second, 11 points behind Australia. On 73 points, they sit four above France and five above Great Britain. With 10 points being awarded to the event winner (the team at the top of the leaderboard after five fleet races) and descending in value, with the ninth-placed team getting two, the Kiwis do have some work to do to ensure they are in the final race, but should feel confident about their position.

It likely shapes up as a five-race series between France and Great Britain to decide who the final team in the US$1m race will be. A tiebreaker for SailGP’s season leaderboard will mean the team who performed best in the most recent event goes ahead, which could be a factor in San Francisco.

How have the Kiwi crew sailed this season?

After a heavily disrupted debut in season two, the Kiwis’ sophomore outing has seen drastic improvements in their performance. Not only have they shown pace on the one-design F50 foiling catamaran, but they have also been consistent onboard.

Likely aided by the fact that almost everyone in the team is also involved with Team New Zealand’s America’s Cup campaign, the group has made the most of their time together and become one of the fleet’s best units.

The Kiwis have won more races than any other team this season with 16; Australia are the closest team with 11. Both teams have won three events each. However, Australia hold a commanding lead in the standings as New Zealand were twice docked points for on-water incidents – losing two season points at each of the Dubai and Singapore stops.

The New Zealanders bring a settled group into San Francisco, with Peter Burling at the helm, Blair Tuke on wing trimming duties, Liv Mackay in the strategist role, Andy Maloney as the flight controller, and Josh Junior, Marcus Hansen and Louis Sinclair providing the power on the grinding pedestals.

Heading into this weekend’s season finale, Burling said a lot had changed for the team since last season’s event in San Francisco.

“Last year in San Fran, we had effectively decided we’d be better off putting our efforts into trying to improve the team rather than trying to win a particular event.

“It’s a pretty unique race format where you get such a limited training time that essentially every time you change something significant with how you’re operating the boat, it takes a lot of time to get back to where you were. A lot of the time, you’re going backwards to hopefully go further forwards in the long term.

“This time around, we’ve got a steady line-up, we’re really happy with how we’ve been sailing the boat; just making some minor tweaks and just looking forward to trying to put together the best performance we can.”

Equation for the Kiwis to confirm their place in the Grand Final race

If New Zealand finish ninth (75 total season points): France would overtake them by finishing fifth or higher; Great Britain would do so finishing fourth or higher.

Eighth: France would overtake them by finishing fourth or higher; Great Britain third.

Seventh: France would overtake them by finishing third or higher; Great Britain would do so with a top-two finish.

Sixth: France would overtake them by finishing in the top two; Great Britain would need to be the top team after the five fleet races to surpass the Kiwis.

Fifth: France would overtake them with an event win; Great Britain would be unable to do so.

Fourth: The Kiwis would finish the season in second place regardless of where any other team finished the San Francisco event and would go on to the final race.

How to watch

SailGP’s final event of the season will be broadcast live on Sky Sport 2 and on the Sky Sport Now app from 9.30am on Sunday (the first three fleet races) and Monday (two fleet races and the stand-alone Grand Final race). The racing will also be streaming live on the SailGP YouTube channel.

Sail GP back in Chicago this weekend

The event takes place Friday and Saturday, and spectators can watch from Navy Pier

WLS logo

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Slick sailboats are back in Lake Michigan as some of the world's most talented sailors arrive in Chicago,

The Sail GP competition happens this Friday and Saturday and the adrenaline-fueled races will bring crowds to the lakefront.

Chicago is transforming into a racing town this summer.

Sail GP has returned and is gearing up for two days of spectator-focused racing that will take place on Lake Michigan right in front of the city's skyline this weekend.

"Chicago is a sports town and we are seeing racing starting take off around the country and they are realizing we want to be in Chicago," Tod Reynolds, Sail GP race director, said. "Sail GP learned that first event was here last year, NASCAR is learning that again this year. That skyline, it's all the same reasons, the people of the city, the skyline. Why would you not want to be in Chicago?"

Wednesday morning, three gigantic F-50 catamarans were launched at Burnham Harbor by a crane. The cutting-edge boats boast highway speeds.

Athlete Paul Campbell-James is a UK-born wing trimmer for Team USA, driven by the adrenaline.

"It's really hard to describe and you describe it to sailors and sailors mostly think of the boats going 10 miles an hour like would be a fast boat," Campbell-James said. "We're doing 60 miles an hour and we're doing that meters away from nine other boats."

Chicago is the first stop of the fourth season of Sail GP, with 10 teams here from all over the world. This is the only freshwater stop.

"The boat, it flies out of the water and when you have freshwater compared to saltwater, the boat will fly out of the water at a higher speed then with the saltwater so it changes a lot of our numbers, a lot of our takeoff speeds and changes the way we sail," Campbell-James said.

Wednesday, teams are getting into the water and training.

"I've always been an adrenaline junkie. I love going fast on the water. There is nothing like it," said Team USA's Mac Agnese.

Launched in 2019, Sail GP is all about short track racing close to shore, creating a completely different experience for spectators.

"The beauty of these harbors and venues around the world are natural stadiums, and when we ride, literally this close to the boardwalk, what that means is you have these huge crowds," said Team USA's Jimmy Spithill. "It's a tight little track, and Chicago really sets up beautifully. Right off Navy Pier. We're on the inside of the break wall. Yeah, people. It will be impossible to miss."

Three 12 to 15-minute races will take place on each of the two days they are in Chicago.

"It happens very quickly. A small mistake can make a big difference. The boats are super quick. Things are happening very fast, makes it very exciting," Agnese said.

The event takes place Friday and Saturday and spectators can watch from Navy Pier.

It comes as the city also revs up for the NASCAR Street Race at the beginning of July.

Sail GP said all speed-seekers are welcome.

"So this is unlike any sailboat race that happens in Chicago," Reynolds said. "It's more like Formula One or NASCAR on the water."

The races on Friday and Saturday will start at 4 p.m. and there will be 90 minutes of races with three races each day. Gates will open at Navy Pier at 3 p.m.

While the best views for spectators will be from Navy Pier, where you will need a ticket, anyone along the lakefront between Museum Campus and Navy Pier should be able to catch a glimpse of the action.

Without it, we keep repeating the ongoing cycle of uncertainty year after year.”

NASCAR at Indianapolis 2024: Start time, TV, streaming, lineup for Brickyard 400

Portrait of Ellen J. Horrow

NASCAR is back at the Brickyard – and, for that matter, back on the famed oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

After spending the past three seasons racing on the iconic speedway’s road course, the Cup Series will once again tackle the oval used for more than 100 years in the Indy 500.

Sunday’s race is not just important for historical reasons – it marks the 30th anniversary of NASCAR’s first Brickyard 400, won by Indiana native Jeff Gordon – it also has important implications for the current season. Winless drivers will have just five more chances, including Sunday , to win a race and punch a ticket into the 2024 playoffs.

Reverting to the oval couldn’t have come at a better time for struggling two-time Cup Series champion Kyle Busch, who has endured a nightmare season. The Richard Childress Racing driver is mired in 18th place in the standings and in danger of ending an incredible streak of at least one win every season since 2005. Busch is one of just two active Cup drivers (along with Brad Keselowski) who has won the Brickyard 400, and he’s done it twice – in 2015 and 2016 – while scoring four additional victories on the IMS oval in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Can Busch recapture his form at Indy? Here’s all the information you need to get ready for Sunday’s Brickyard 400:

BRICKYARD 400: NASCAR driver to feature WNBA star Caitlin Clark on his car

What time does the NASCAR Cup race at Indianapolis start?

The Brickyard 400 starts at 2:30 p.m. ET Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

What TV channel is the NASCAR Cup race at Indianapolis on?

The Brickyard 400 is being broadcast nationally by NBC.

Will there be a live stream of the NASCAR Cup race at Indianapolis?

The Brickyard 400 can be live streamed on the  NBCSports website  and the NBC Sports app. The race is also available to stream on  Fubo .

How many laps is the NASCAR Cup race at Indianapolis?

The Brickyard 400 is 160 laps around the 2.5-mile track for a total of 400 miles. The race will feature three segments (laps per stage) – Stage 1: 50 laps; Stage 2: 50 laps; Stage 3: 60 laps.

Who won the most recent Brickyard 400?

Kevin Harvick won back-to-back Brickyard 400s in 2019 and 2020, the last time the Cup Series raced on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. In 2020, Harvick won in a green-white-checkered overtime finish, edging Matt Kenseth by 0.743 seconds after leading 68 of 161 laps.

On the road course, AJ Allmendinger won in 2021, Tyler Reddick in 2022 and Michael McDowell in 2023.

yacht racing on tv today

Formula 1 qualifying takes centre stage at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix today (Saturday, July 20), with the teams battling for grid positions for Sunday's showdown at Hungaroring.

After securing back-to-back race wins with George Russell at the Red Bull Ring and Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone , Mercedes are now looking to capitalise on their momentum and secure their third victory this season.

The Silver Arrows have a strong track record at the Hungaroring with nine pole positions and have clinched the top grid slot in the past four years.

However, they will face stiff competition from McLaren , Ferrari and Red Bull this weekend, with the latter looking to reclaim their on-track dominance following Max Verstappen 's two consecutive winless races.

Is there a NASCAR race today? How to watch Cup, Xfinity, Craftsman Truck and ARCA races this week at Indy

You've waited four long years to see NASCAR back on the oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Surely, you'll need to know how to watch it.

We've got that covered and the famed 2½-mile, four-cornered track isn't the only one in Indy hosting races this weekend.

All four NASCAR touring series — Cup, Xfinity, Craftsman Truck and ARCA Menards — have events this weekend with the latter two taking to Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, a 0.686-mile de facto short track. As for the Cup and Xfinity Series, those cars will battle on arguably the world's most famous circuit for the first time since 2020.

Here's how to watch all of this week's events:

What channel is the NASCAR Indianapolis race on today? Time, TV schedule for Brickyard 400

Portrait of Nick Gray

The NASCAR Cup Series returns to Indianapolis Motor Speedway proper for the first time since 2020 for the Brickyard 400 on Sunday.

A crown jewel on the schedule since 1994, the Brickyard 400 left the schedule after the 2020 race and moved to the IMS road course. In hindsight, not running the most famous oval track in the world when it was possible to do so was not the correct decision. Now, the Cup Series returns to the IMS oval.

Last week, Ryan Blaney outlasted Denny Hamlin and Alex Bowman to win at Pocono.

Among the entered cars for Sunday's race, only Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson have won on the IMS oval.

Here's how you can watch Sunday's race:
