Nor East Bistro

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Keen to try the new menu with new chef from a few positive reports. The seafood pie and barramundi were good although we didn't need half a plate of chips. The ceviche of kingfish was well presented and delicious. Our only criticism was that there... were no salads on the menu at all. A chicken and grain or roasted vegetable salad is essential especially for lunch. Also missed the thai prawn curry which was a good option from all the fried food (no change to menu there). Also very few vegetarian options. Otherwise you can't beat looking out at the water and yachts. Also liked the table service and ability to split the bill. No trouble at all. Will it try again. Hopefully they are brave enough to give salads a go. More

Food was ordinary. Presentation was also ordinary. Both chefs were trained under Chef Molines which should have been spectacular. Chocolate mousse for dessert wasn't an actual mousse and very runny. No garlic bread. You had to butter your own bread at the table from a... cardboard butter container. Very unprofessional. Bring back the previous bistro caterers anyday. Very disappointing. More

We had Lunch at the Nor East Bistro and, since our last visit there the dining area has been enlarged which has really been an improvement but, the toilets are at the other end of the building .Not good for less mobile people! The staff... and, service were friendly and, good. The menu has changed since our last visit. And , Quality of dishes not what we expected. Different Chef,Catering ?? Will we go back ? not sure !! More

We had lunch at the Nor-East bistro at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club last Tuesday . We had last been there over a year ago and, at that time were not impressed. The catering has changed with a new chef and, what a change! Staff were... friendly and, the service prompt. We both had a king prawn bruschetta for starters which was different but very good. This was followed by steak covered with a tasty gravy and with chat potatoes. Desert was a chocolate mouse and, coffee. All in all a great meal and, the prices were reasonable! We did observe other meals being served which also appeared good. We will definately be back !! More

I dined there tonight as one of a party of 6. The food was amazing and the atmosphere was beautiful. Unfortunately the gentleman that served us, whilst polite, was quite arrogant. The waitresses were very helpful and their service was great! We ordered wine and... 3 courses each; however when we went to order coffee at 8.15pm, we were told by the quite abrupt and less than helpful bar manager that the coffee machine had been turned off at 8 and we were unable to order. She was able to serve us more alcohol but couldn’t turn on the coffee machine!!! Another of our party asked again if we could order 6 affagados (unaware that we had already asked) and was told that the machine was always turned off at 8pm!! People usually want coffee after their meal and to turn the coffee machine off so early whilst people are still eating seems rediculous. It wasn’t as if she was going home- we were there till 10pm and she was still there cleaning and serving alcohol to customers!! Why not clean the coffee machine later?? We spent a considerable amount on food and wine yet were unable to enjoy a coffee afterwards. Very disappointed in both the situation and her attitude- she was quite rude and unapologetic; shrugging her shoulders and dismissing our requests. Having worked in hospitality for many years, I know it takes literally 10 minutes to flush a coffee machine and a further 10 minutes for a complete clean and polish!! Even turning it off at 9.30pm would have allowed her plenty of time to clean it before 10pm!!! Great food but hopefully you don’t want to order coffee after your meal!!! Requests after 8pm will be met with eye rolling, contempt and no consideration for the paying customer!! More

During the COVID-19 Lockdown my wife and I took to having delicious food delivered to our home from here and what a meal they provided. Some of the tastiest dishes we’ve had. Well done.

After our last visit in 2021 I noticed that there had recently been a change in the catering. A change but no better ! A great location, friendly staff. The food ! We had :-calamari for entree - - very tough Szechuan Prawns (chilli) --burnt... prawns with chopped up chilli. The members of this club deserve better. We spent $130.00 for a second rate meal !! Will not be back. More

We had a booking for 7 people. The atmosphere was good. We all ordered seafood for entree and main meal. Unfortunately 2 of us came down with food poisoning in the early hours of the next morning. I contacted the restaurant to advise them of... the issue, and spoke to a junior member of staff, who returned my call the next day after I left a message on their answering machine. She advised that no-one else had phoned up to advise they had also been ill, but she would pass on the message to the chef. We won't be eating at Nor East again. More

I always enjoyed Newcastle Yacht Club bistro and didnt realise it had changed to Nor East Bistro....the Prawn Bruschetta is beautiful and next time will order more as one slice is definitely not enough. The meal I had was very nice although the fish tasted... like Basa Fillet to me but was told it was Grenadier fish. The batter was very light and crisp and my other companion meals were lovely too. The dessert was pretty stale or heavy and wasnt what we expected but it was ok. I would definitely go back and actually being served at table was great. A lovely place to eat with a stunning view. HARBOURSIDE DINING: Luke Carpenter delights at Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club

Nautica dining – 95 hannell st, wickham nsw 2293.

by Newcastle Live 15 December 2021, 3:00 pm

Executive chef, Luke Carpenter brought his pursuit of dining excellence to Nautica Dining at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club this year, and now a seat at the harbourside venue is one of the hottest tickets in town.

Luke first moved to Australia when he was 21. He worked in Sydney before moving to the United Kingdom where he took positions in places like Scotland’s Skibo Castle and Midsummer House in Cambridge which went from one Michelin star to two during Luke’s time.

When he returned to Australia he took a position as the executive chef at Peppers Clearwater and turned it into an award-winning venue before moving to the Anchorage in Port Stephens where he was awarded a Chef’s Hat by the Australian Good Food Guide .

Luke has designed a diverse menu for Nautica Dining which focuses on in-season Australian produce and includes some amazing fresh Australian seafood.

Highlights of the menu include a pan-roasted Daintree barramundi and the Bass Strait grass-fed beef ribeye served with black garlic butter.

And while Luke is focused on providing a bistro experience with some amazing food for the club, he also looks forward to offering bespoke degustation options for people who are looking for a themed dining experience with matching wines.

You can find Nautica Dining inside the clubhouse at Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club at 95 Hannell Street in Wickham. Visit ncyc.net.au for more information

Harrison operated fine dining restaurant Nor East on the wharf next to The Brewery for four years and, after stints in the kitchen at Bar Petite, The Albion and Bistro Lowlands, is returning to his passion for cooking seafood at Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club in Wickham.

Harrison, who trained as a chef under Robert Molines in the Hunter Valley, took over the space in August and has reunited with head chef Darryl Popp, who worked alongside him at Nor East on Queens Wharf.

"I'd had Lowlands for five years, so it was time for a change," Harrison told Food and Wine.

The focus of the menu is seafood, with a rotating specials board of six to eight dishes each week.

"I love cooking seafood. It's something I am truly passionate about," Harrison said.

"This is one of the most gorgeous spots in Newcastle, so I really needed the food to match it. We're trying to position it not as fine dining, but as an upmarket bistro. It's somewhere you can still count on getting fish and chips, but you can also have market fresh amazing seafood."

As well as the main menu, Nor East Bistro offers starters and share plates, such as king prawn bruschetta and Harrison's signature chicken live pate with quince jam, pickles and sourdough. The charcuterie board is popular on weekends with customers who sit on the lawn looking out across the marina with a bottle of wine to share.

Nor East Bistro is open seven days for lunch and dinner, and serves breakfast on weekends. The breakfast menu includes options such as scrambled eggs with shaved sugar-cured kingfish.

"That one is something a bit different and it's really nice. We are also using really good local bread from the bakery across the road [Baked Uprising]," Harrison said.

A street food menu runs every Sunday afternoon to coincide with the club's live entertainment.

"It's a more relaxed and informal menu to match with the live music," Harrison said.

"We offer things like tacos, or we might put a curry on. It's a cool place to hang out on a Sunday afternoon and have a share menu with a group. There are vegetarian options and our specials board has a big focus on gluten-free as well."

I am looking at learning how to sail. I have no experience. I am 57 years old and am very interested in Ocean sailing . Eventually wanting to bye my own yacht and sail the world. Can you recommend or advise on where I should start

What time is your sunday music entertainment, malcolm rosborough.

Great location & food good. Can get very busy with large parties taking over tables & seating can be a premium if you arrive on one of those days. For some reason can't take government $25 vouchers

Andrew McInnes

We loved this place. Beautiful location and the food was obviously create by a very creative and caring chief. I had the prawn omelet and wife had avocado and labna. Both were fantastic.

Dianne Frizza

Greeted by rude and unfriendly bartender demanding we show her proof that we checked in. I didn't see anyone else have to show proof. All of our 3 meals were way too salty. Crushed cornflakes(why) on the dessert were stale. Noisy construction right behind our table. Was suppose to be a nice lunch out as two of us had just celebrated our birthdays recently.

Mick & Di Smith

The black beer is nice, the views are great. Haven't had the best eating experiences here. Just average.

Carla Edwards Fine Art Portraiture

I'm biased because I'm linked to this place through the actual past time of sailing rather than a yachtie wannabe hanging around these establishments. How to sing their praises? Hospitality - great. Drinks - wet. Food - Nom Nom Nom 😋 Toilets - clean and comfy. View - well if you walk around the harbour from here you see a range of beautiful views BUT the one I love the most is standing at the next building - the Co-Op looking towards the fishing trawlers. If you're a yachtie you'll get the place and if you're trawling you'll be welcome too.

Was there with the TP52 event for sail festival and the club put on a great event, well run friendly place and a quaint little spot to park up at the club after racing. Great club for keel boat events.

First time back since 2019 and it was lovely.Restaurant and service excellent. Food ...amazing. Covid safe.

Dropped in for a Cappucino and a muffin. Don't bother coffee not hot and muffin stale. But on the upside it had a great view.

Went last Thursday and it was quite busy. We hadnt booked so asked if there were any tables and the staff said no but we will set one up outside for us. I had cripy skin barramundi with salad and it was fantastic. Service excellent. Definitely back there soon. Plenty of parking in the car park as well.

About NCYC (History)

The Club was incorporated on the 19th of April, 1994, and since then, has grown to be a nationally recognised name in both sailing and sailing development. NCYC has gone through various phases of development, beginning with the completion of four marina arms, boatyard, and commercial centre. The second phase of development saw the completion of two more marina arms, and the completion of the Clubhouse in 2008. In 2021, the Club completed stage three, the footprint of its Clubhouse.

The City of Newcastle is commonly referred to by locals as ‘God’s Country,’ and they are right to do so. Newcastle has an incredible array of beaches, restaurants, cafes, and gallaries within 2km of NCYC, while being less than an hour drive to the famous Hunter Valley Wine Country.

We are excited to welcome members, guests, and sailors from all over to enjoy our Licenced Club, great marina facilities, and fantastic sailing.

As far as Australian yacht clubs go, NCYC’s history is relatively short, yet still boasts as one of the newest yacht clubs in Australia, and certainly the newest with significant club and marina assets.
