D2P® displacement to planing hull

The D2P Displacement to Planing Hull designed by Pierluigi Ausonio in conjunction with the Azimut Benetti R&D Centre combines the comfort typical of a displacement hull with the performance of a planing hull and it significantly improved fuel efficiency. This new solution is based on a double chine hull design with an innovative wave piercer and allows the yacht reaching high top speeds without needing particular powerful engines, or navigate in displacement mode with a remarkable range at a cost effective speed. The hull has been optimised for the full range of most frequently used speeds of 10-12 knots and cruising speeds in semi-displacement mode.

New details of Azimut Grande 32 Metri superyacht revealed

Italian yacht builder Azimut Yachts has revealed more details on its new Azimut Grande 32 Metri superyacht. The 32 metre yacht will feature exteriors by Stefano Righini and interiors by Achille Salvagni .

For its latest creation in the Azimut Grande series, the yard was looking for something avant-garde. "The idea was for [the 32 Metri] to be something unexpected – we wanted to find a brilliant way to provide features not usually found on a 32 metre boat," says Federico Lantero, Azimut Yachts brand manager.

The sporty superstructure of the Azimut Grande 32 is built entirely in carbon fibre. "No one else is using carbon fibre as much as we are," says Lantero, noting the successful use of the material is part of a programme the company began in 2006. "It's not just about performance, but also about comfort. And using carbon fibre also allows us to have more volume while keeping weight distribution and the centre of gravity in line. All of our new models about 60 feet will have extensive use of carbon fibre."

"All of our clients want a boat that's a joy to see from the outside, that's recognisable on the horizon, but then is sophisticated and relaxing inside," he continues. The interior brief for Salvagni was to have a feeling of softness, harmony and wellness – while also creating unexpected details.

The walls curve at the edges, a way of defining spaces without setting physical barriers. All of the furniture is custom designed by Salvagni. "Only the decorative lamps and a few chairs are not," says Sara Cipriani, from Azimut's style office.

There will be interesting details throughout, such as an inset over the bar, made of special laquered material that looks like a mirror, but actually serves a purpose by holding bottles.

The yacht's exterior living spaces are well thought out, too. The beach club can be enclosed with decorative curtains and a sofa can be added, "transforming it into a space like Nikki Beach," says Cipriani. "So it's a fantastic lounge at sea."

Performance is also a priority. The D2P ("displacement to planing") hull form is designed for efficiency at two different sets of speeds. "The first range where we hit optimal efficiency is between 11 to 12 knots, and then we do it again up at 20 knots," says Lantero.

The Azimut Grande 32 Metri will make her debut at this year's Cannes Yachting Festival. Five hulls of the new model have already been sold, with owners hailing from around the world.

Description

The debut of the Azimut 32 METRI planing yacht took place in 2018 at the international Boat Show in Cannes. The ship’s partners were already engaged in the design of the ship: designers Stefano Rigini and Achille Salvani. The yacht received the glazing of the cabin, traditional for this shipyard, in the form of “shark fins” and large portholes in the cabins, which are decorated in Italian style.

To relax with the company, a flybridge, a terrace and a spacious recreation area in the bow of the vessel are provided. On the flybridge there is a large corner sofa, a bar counter, a control post, a plasma waterproof TV and several sun loungers. A shaded terrace with a sofa and sun loungers allows you to go onto the hydraulic transom, providing easy access to water. The main deck is characterized by an abundance of free space. There is a relaxation area with five sofas, a round dining table for 10 people, a control post, a kitchen and the owner’s cabin. In the owner’s cabin there is a large double bed, a separate bathroom with shower, a table and several sofas. On the lower deck there are four cabins for guests and three for the crew, with a separate bathroom in each. In total, the yacht can accommodate up to 16 people.

The ship has two MTU diesel engines, with a total capacity of 4,500 hp, and a fuel tank designed for 16,000 liters of fuel. The maximum speed is 26 knots, while cruising is 21 knots.

Due to the fact that many elements of the yacht's hull were made of carbon fiber and lightweight fiberglass - the weight of the vessel was significantly reduced, thereby making its course more stable and softer.

The yacht can make voyages and go into the open ocean, as evidenced by its classification - A. Sea Craft.

The new Azimut Grande 32 m by Achille Salvagni

After the world première at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the Azimut Grande 32 metri (that has Achille Salvagni’s Interiors ) has been on display also at the Monaco Yacht Show.

The Azimut Grande 32 Metri is avant-garde in every sense, not least because of the multiple unprecedented solutions that establish its right to a prominent position as one of the world’s most advanced and modern superyachts, or the advanced naval platform that is packed with technology: the combination of Carbon Tech , D2P® hull and wave piercer (which increases the length at the waterline by 1.8 meters), results in peerless consumption efficiency. In addition to the technology, Salvagni worked on the spatial composition with an extremely sophisticated architectural approach and never using decoration for its own sake. Stefano Righini , a longstanding partner of the shipyard, has crafted powerful exterior lines , with stylistic features that sweep steeply towards the stern, hiding the spacious interior volumes. The full-height glazed surfaces in the bow, which have been given an original placement that straddles both the hull and the superstructure, contribute to lightening the effectively perceived volume of the boat. The vertical bow , a style feature created with the first S generation and also present on the Fly range, is now effectively one of Righini’s hallmarks, making the yacht extremely liveable.  Righini’s distinctive design features on the Grande 32 Metri, making it absolutely unique in its category, are the spacious stern beach club , the lateral garage that can house a 5-meter tender and a 3-meter jet ski, the huge full-height glazed surfaces on both sides of the full-beam owner’s suite, and the highly expressive and character-building vertical bow .

The Fly Deck has a usable surface area of 70 square meters and features smooth lines and curves where accessories and furniture seem almost suspended in mid-air. It consists of three areas : the bow space designed for dining, a central section decorated like a living room and, finally, an area in the stern that can be furnished with a hydro massage tub and a sun lounging area, or as another lounge.

The stern beach club has a total surface area of 18 square meters and is available in two different versions to meet owners’ needs. The first more classic version is ideal for diving and water sports, with furniture and storage designed to hold the equipment needed. A second version has been designed by the shipyard for owners who want the utmost enjoyment from the sea on a sophisticated water-level terrace . A structure with four carbon poles and super lightweight organza awnings protects the outdoor area and creates a unique covered terrace, adding a distinctly original touch of elegance.  

Layout and interior design: the fluid welcome of soft, cosy settings

Inside, the sense of sophisticated harmony continues to permeate the constituent features of the new model, maintaining a family feeling with the other two Grande units designed by Salvagni, one of AD Collector’s top 100 international designers and included on the A-list drawn up by Elle Decor USA. His approach continues to eschew pure decoration and focuses instead on spatial composition: fluid surfaces detach from the walls to form an independent system, using spatial elements that flow seamlessly while nevertheless establishing distinct volumes.

The settings are at one and the same time welcoming, simple and sophisticated, playing on the harmonious balance of detail and function. The walls embrace and expand , like a succession of negatives and positives that fix and expand space.

The spaces are divided on the basis of a succession of contrasts between full and empty, between polished dark wood surfaces alternating with portions of ceiling and large areas featuring light-coloured woods. Every detail, no matter how small, has been carefully researched to convey and celebrate the key themes of the interior design: selected pastel elements stand out against the broad chalk and butter-coloured leather surfaces, infusing them with a sense of wellbeing and suggesting an atmosphere of complete relaxation.

Grande 32 Metri has a Raised Pilot House on an elevated half-deck between the Main Deck and the Flybridge.  

The kitchen can be accessed directly from the crew area and the lateral passageway, giving the crew full independence of movement.

The lobby and the staircase to the guest night area are characterised by soft, flowing lines, designed by Achille Salvagni in accord with the overall harmony-inspired conceptual approach, as well as to facilitate ease and convenience of movement.

The bow area is set aside for the full-beam owner’s suite . Spacious and flooded with light, it has a centrally-positioned double bed between two walls made up entirely of big full-height glazed surfaces that extend down to the floor. On request, a portion of these glazed surfaces can be fitted with gullwing windows.

The Lower Deck , on the other hand, is given over to the guest night area and contains two big VIP cabins, both with double beds and facing each other, and two cabins with twin beds, sleeping a total of eight. Each cabin has its own en-suite bathroom.

The refined, evocative decoration of these cabins sets off light-coloured, matt woods against darker, polished varieties. Various inserts feature exclusive materials like treated brass, bronze and steel to give these sophisticated settings an even more accentuated personality and suggest a mood of refined calm.  

Technology and performance. Carbon Tech and D2P® hull  

The entire superstructure is laminated using Carbon Tech with the addition of vinyl ester and epoxy resin , reducing the weight of each individual part laminated in carbon by a value over 30%. The D2P® Displacement to Planing hull, designed by Pierluigi Ausonio with the Azimut | Benetti Research & Development center , is the result of years of a major design study based on the combined use of proprietary CFD software, FEM analysis and multiple tank tests performed at the Brodarsky Institute in Zagabria . This sophisticated and innovative hull has a wave piercing bow that increases the length at the waterline by 1.8 meters, resulting in a significant improvement of the waterplane coefficient in displacement mode, reduced hull resistance as a result and, finally, a sharp improvement of wave strike in rough sea. The second key feature of the hull is the double-chine , which reduces hull resistance at sustained cruising speed and improves stability in displacement mode. The combined effect of Carbon Tech and the exclusive D2P ® hull delivers maximum consumption efficiency levels . Comparing the efficiency of this new generation hull against that of boats of the same size built in the early 2000s by the same shipyard, reveals a percentage performance improvement of up to 30%.  

Onboard comfort is the result of care lavished on even the tiniest detail, starting with the production and construction process. This involved concerted efforts to reduce noise levels by using elastic systems for the propulsion system transmission, as well as the introduction of modal analysis in the design process. This latter technique, borrowed from the aerospace industry, is used to study and predict the potential stresses and vibrations to which the surfaces will be subject, so that structures can be created that minimise them to achieve excellent acoustic comfort.

The efficiency of the hull and weight reduction achieved with the use of carbon fiber deliver significant benefits in terms of range. So much so that with a displacement speed of 12 knots , the Grande 32 Metri has a range of 1,000 nautical miles .

The engine room is fitted with a pair of 2,200 mHP MTU model 16V M86 units, driving the yacht to a maximum speed of 26,5 knots , while the cruising speed has been calculated at about 21 knots.

New boats: Azimut Grande 32 Metri

With floor-to-ceiling windows in the main deck master cabin, a top speed of 26.5 knots and a healthy fast cruising speed of 21 knots, the Azimut Grande 32 Metri has plenty to catch our attention

The innovation and exquisite execution of the 35m flagship of the Azimut Grande range bagged it the award for Custom Yacht in this year’s Motor Boat Awards , so the scaled down 32 Metri is off to a strong start.

Much of the technology is shared like the use of a carbon-fibre/epoxy mix in the superstructure, D2P hull form (double chine with a wave-piercing bow to improve efficiency) and a main deck master cabin. Quite a cabin it is, too, with floor-to-ceiling windows that drop deep towards the waterline supplying elevated views over the water from the comfort of the bed.

The sloping snout of a bow neatly arcs over this cabin without ruining the profile and provides a fabulous living space all of its own with a mix of seating and sunbathing acreage.

GRANDE 32 METRI

Shaped by an ambitious vision to forge new traditions, the Grande 32M is an innovative marvel of naval architecture. Compelling and charismatic lines boldly converse with the sea, while Azimut’s growing low emission philosophy further embraces the use of carbon throughout. Lavish interiors and tranquil colors encompass a fluid ideology, dedicating a special chapter to holistic wellbeing on board.

Volumes in disguise . The masterful play of lines and curves gives rise to a natural tension, which runs from the bow to the extreme stern, dressing the abundant interior volumes with a gritty and dynamic exterior design. The large full-height windows rise from the hull to the superstructure, further lightening the yacht’s appearance while expanding the sense of space inside.

A bespoke frame for the sea . The interiors transcend simple decoration, focusing on the composition of the space: free-flowing surfaces detach from the walls, becoming design elements in their own right; soft lines and organic geometries liquify the environments, welcoming and relaxing the ambience; the total project is charmed by a distinctive style and an independent mind.

Whatever you need, wherever you are . With the side garage out of the way, the transom opens right onto the sea, revealing a sheltered beach club of nearly 18 square meters. It’s an all-day social oasis, and the closest one to the waves.

A flowing plateau. The yacht’s largest flush deck is as considerate of shape as of space. One lounge area follows another, weaving the curvy furnishings together to achieve a harmony amidst function, always with endless views of the horizon.

No borders, just horizons . The sense of space on board is oriented by the contrast between full and empty spaces, light surfaces and dark borders. Punctuating each area with style, the bulkheads curve at the ends to organically frame the full-height windows.

Front-row seaviews . The full-height windows in the owner’s suite offer extraordinary views of the sea and an expanded perception of space. Every precious detail shines under the flood of natural light that follows.

The structural project of the hull has been carried out according to the High Speed Craft Classification and has been approved by R.I.Na. according to the “Rules for the Classification of Yachts”. VINYLESTER RESIN is used for the first coats of the hand laid-up lamination below the water line. This kind of resin is extremely effective in preventing osmosis thanks to its chemical and physical characteristics. Worldwide acknowledged quality isophtalic resin is used for all the stages of the hand laid-up lamination process. High quality PVC with outstanding mechanical peculiarities is used for hullsides, main deck and superstructure lamination with sandwich. Engine room and collision bulkheads are laminated in sandwich. All other internal bulkheads are built using advanced composite materials.

Fuel system

• Fuel levels and their alarms are visible in wheelhouse and on the main electrical panel.
• Fuel filling operation is carried through fuel fillers positioned on each side of the superstructure.
• Reversible electric pump (Gianneschi CP30 C1) with a capacity of 105 l/min (27,7 gals/min), to transfer fuel among fuel tanks. Controls on main electrical panel and on monitoring system in raised pilot house.
• Manual fuel pump (Gianneschi Excelsior 2) with a capacity of 24 l/min (6.3 gals/min), to transfer fuel among fuel tanks in emergency.
• Duplex RACOR filters on engines type 75/1000 MA
• Single RACOR filters on generators type 500 MA
• AISI 304 piping.

Black and grey water tanks

• One GRP gray/black water tank, with a maximum capacity of 1,500 lt (396 gals) to collect water from showers and sinks, galley, washer/dryer, WCs and fan coil drip trays.
• N.4 secondary collecting tanks (Johnson Pump cod. J09-13384) to collect the grey waters from heads and fancoil drip trays. Viking Power 32 pump to transfer the grey waters to the main tank.
• Electrical pump 220V with 42 lt./min. (11 gals/min) max. flow rate.
• Copper piping in engine room and PVC piping in the other areas of the yacht.

Bilge system

• The bilge system in made up by two parts: the main system, centralized with an automatic electric pump and a manifold, and a secondary one, with dedicated suctions in each compartment.

Main bilge system

• Centralized system with suction in each compartment connected to the main manifold positioned in engine room.
• 220 V electrical pump (Gianneschi ACM331-B), maximum capacity 140 lt/min (37 gals/min)
• Emergency suction in engine room connected to one of the main engines sea water intakes.
• Copper piping in engine room and PVC piping in the other areas of the yacht. 

Secondary bilge system

• 24 V electrical pumps in engine room and in the bilges under the accommodation, maximum capacity 57 lt/min (14.5 gals/min).
• High level sensors in each compartment with alarms in the wheelhouse.

Fresh water system

• System can be fed via a structural tank with a capacity of 2,000 lt (528 gals), via a shore connection, or via a water maker with nominal capacity of 180 lt./h. (Idromar MCJ3).
• Plug for the shore connection in the aft.
• Two electrical pumps (one 220V and one 24V, model Gianneschi Jet4, capacity: 80 l/min – 21 gals/min) positioned in engine room pump water from tank to all users: washbasins, sinks, showers, electrical  appliances, aft platform shower and washing deck hose.
• N.2 Water heaters with 80 lt (21 gals) maximum capacity.
• WC system is Tecma type, working with fresh water.
• One 24V fresh water spare pump (not installed) is supplied.

Sea water system

• Four seawater intakes in bronze and two seawater intakes in fiberglass with valves and filters: two for general utilities, one (in fiberglass) for each main engine and one for each generator.
• Fire main pump, air conditioning cooling pump and watermaker are connected to the two sea water intakes for general utilities.
• Part of main engines cooling water is used to cool the gear box and the raisers for gas discharge.
• Sea water fire system with electric pump (Gianneschi ACM331-B), 220V, 140 lt./min., (37 gals/min.) max. flow rate, placed in engine room, and emergency manual pump (Gianneschi Excelsior 5), 60 lt./min max. flow rate. The pumps are connected to two fire hoses located on main deck, bow and aft.
• The fire pump is also used for chain washdown.
• CuNi 90/10 or Cunipress piping. 

Air conditioning, venting and extractor system

Azimut Grande 32 Metri Review: Designer Rhapsody

The latest model in the Azimut family, Azimut Grande 32, is an excellent example of what happens when you decide that every part of the yacht is equally important – from the boldly designed exterior and fresh interiors, to the sturdy, trustworthy structure

Azimut Grande 32 – which stands for meters of length – has debuted last year in Cannes and Monaco, and confirmed the rumors launched before anybody had even seen it. The smaller, but improved version of the popular Azimut Grande 35 is as avant-garde as the builder promised.

Azimut Grande 32 makes hearts go faster

As all new models of the Italian builder, this one is made in carbon fiber, and we all know what that means: smaller weight, higher speed, lots of volume (at its widest part, the 32 is 7,30 meters long). Carbon super-structure, carbon hull reinforcements, D2P hull with a wave-piercing bow – Azimut Grande 32 makes hearts go faster even on paper. Efficient fuel consumption in all sailing modes make it interesting to all of us conscious of the effect we have on the nature, and interesting speed – 10 to 12 knots for the wave-piercing effect, 21 knots for planing, top speed 27 knots – intrigue the racers among us, but the 32 has much more to offer than just numbers.

Impeccably organized layout and unique interiors signed by two legends – exterior is by Stefano Righini, interior by Achille Salvagni – are what sets this yacht apart in a crowd. Salvagni was awarded the interior of the year award for this model last year, and the moment you step aboard, you will understand why. Light pastel colors; soft, wavy shapes, wood and leather – the interior of Azimut Grande 32 is as relaxing as a seaside villa. There is no sharp line in sight, and even the light seeps through the space diffused and gentle, which all results in a space you will not want to leave. Salvagni designed every piece of furniture as well, so the 32 is his brainchild – or his soulchild – and if you like his previous work, you will love this model. The practical half of the Azimut designer duo, Stefano Righini, has made sure you can enjoy the space and sailing without having to worry about anything practical.

Azimut Grande 32 is ready for whatever you feel like doing at sea: the lounge on the bow is large and comfortable, the fly deck stretches across 70 square meters, the beach club aft a real mini-beach, the tender and ski jet garage with side doors roomy enough for all the equipment you’ll ever need. From the outside, all this cozy comfort does look a little intimidating, mostly due to the size and shape of the windows, and the only thing the interior and the exterior have in common is modern elegance.

Signs of Salvani

The layout is simple, with the salon, the diner and the owner’s cabin on the main deck – all enjoying plenty of natural light that flows in gently through those aggressively looking windows worthy of a seaside villa. The staircase, another Salvagni-signed gem, is almost a work of art, but serves its purpose nonetheless, guiding below the deck, toward the four guest cabins.

The unit we tested had one of the cabins converted into a gym at the request of the owner. The engine room is between the decks, in front of the fly deck that is large enough to accommodate whatever space you want to set up there. The bow cockpit is very large, the size of a salon, and gives the fly deck a run for its money in terms of appeal. Unique in every aspect, Azimut Grande 32 is a step away from the traditional look and feel of Azimut models . Especially interesting to those who pay a lot of attention to interiors and style, the yacht has already been recognized for that very detail by several award committees – and the accolades are still coming in.
