Episode Guide

This episode kicks off with Richard reviewing the Peugeot 208 GTi, Renaultsport Clio 200, and Ford Fiesta ST. The Stig drives each car around the Top Gear test track, with the Clio 200 posting the quickest time at 1:32.0. The Fiesta ST was second at 1:32.7 and the 208 GTi was the slowest at 1:33.2. Richard and Jeremy agree that the Fiesta ST is the best to drive.

In the news, the presenters discuss items available for purchase at motorway service stations and plans to introduce pubs in them. James comes up with a solutions for repairing potholes on roads. They also look at the new BMW 4 Series coupé and Richard complains about the M4 motorway and the motorsport version of the car being called the BMW M4.

In the next segment, Jeremy and James travel to New Zealand to conduct a race between an AC45 America’s Cup sailing boat and a Toyota Corolla. James had to cover 220 miles (350 km) in the AC45, whilst Jeremy had a much longer 410 miles (660 km). The AC45’s crew was made up of James, Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie and several America’s Cup winners. As the Corolla was a rental, Jeremy calls it “the fastest car in the world”, meaning he could drive it fast without having to worry about damaging it. He scrapes the side of the car on a narrow bridge to allow an oncoming vehicle to pass. Meanwhile, James complains about how uncomfortable the boat is.

A Vauxhall Astra Tech Line is introduced as the new reasonably priced car, replacing the Kia Cee’d. The Astra has a 1.6 litre engine and comes with “lifetime warranty”. A new lap time board is also introduced and Jeremy and Richard host a party for celebrities to get some times on it.

Back in New Zealand, Jeremy has to drive south before turning north and driving through Auckland to head in the right direction. On the sailing boat, James loses his satellite phone to a strong wave. Jeremy decides to take a shortcut on gravel roads; the track ends, landing him completely off-road. When he finds a gravel road once again, he encounters a tractor and in the process of giving way to it, damages his car on a boundary wall to the side. He swaps his originally blue Corolla for a red one at a hire car centre, hoping James would be too tired to notice the difference. To make up for lost time, Jeremy drives along Ninety Mile Beach. The Corolla gets stuck in the sand on a beach, which was the finishing point. As the boat could not go all the way to the beach, James had to swim the last leg of the race. He reaches the checkpoint before Jeremy but is exhausted from sailing.

Awesome episode, love the hatchbacks and the new resonable price car….. but the best part of them all was James´face after the Race

The episode was filmed in June/July 2019 in Vietnam and Cambodia. Filming for the conclusion of the episode was disrupted by a monsoon, with Jeremy Clarkson writing in a column that the production crew needed rescuing.

• This is the first special episode of Top Gear or The Grand Tour since the Burma Special to not feature cars as the primary mode of transport. The only other special episode not to feature cars is the Vietnam Special .
• Further, it is the first special episode of the show to not feature some form of on-road vehicles.
• This is the second time the trio returned to a country for a second Special. The only other occurrence of returning to a country previously visited, was during the Patagonia Special which briefly revisited Chile which had also been featured at the end of the Bolivia Special.

Motoring magazine. James May is taken outside his comfort zone - World Rallycross racing in a 600-horsepower hatchback. Nicholas Hoult tries his hand in the Reasonably Priced Car.

In this episode, James May is taken far outside his comfort zone as he straps into an insanely fast, highly-tuned, 600-horsepower hatchback and is thrown into the lion's den of World Rallycross racing. As well as trying to fend off a pack of top-flight professional drivers, May's life is made harder by his support crew, the distinctly unsupportive Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.

Also in this show, Clarkson is at the track in the latest Jaguar F-type R and a sensational, modernised E-type called the Eagle Low Drag GT, while Hammond is in Spain to test the brand new version of the legendary Mazda MX-5.

Finally, Brit Pack acting star Nicholas Hoult tries his hand in the Reasonably Priced Car.
