Selling my 1989 24' Skater cat. Comes with custom built 2014 Allstar Aluminum Trailer with torsion axles, brakes, custom wheels, and all LED lights. Trailer has a 5 year warranty. Motors were rebuilt at Diamond Marine last year with new top pinned Pistons, rings, beatings, custom tuners and porting, and the ECU was flashed to ROS specs by Simon Motorsports. Engines had 130-140 original hours prior to rebuilds and have approximately 20 hours now. Very clean engines and boat! 4 JL Audio 8.8's and two 10" JL subs, JL Amps, all installed by JL Audio Factory Employee. Full Sunbrella cover with suede on inside, Livorsi gauges and Livorsi throttles, LED nav lights. Blue led lights in the cockpit and white in the bilge. Racing hatch in the rear can hold a large cooler out of the way of passengers. Sportmaster lower units 20" and offshore midsections. Cleaver 3 blade props recently balanced and polished by Frank and Jimmie's in Fort Lauderdale. Latham steering with dual rams and wing plates. Boat has the throttles in the center so you can drive it using two people or just one. Trim switches wired to both sides for driver and throttleman. Boat has a tunnel tab that also has switches wored to both sides. Comes turn-key with props, hubs, etc. and will run 110mph as it sits. With more setup you could probably see 117-120mph. I have only run Aviation Fuel/Recreational (Non-Ethanol) fuel in this boat, so there are no Ethanol issues whatsoever. Boat has two fuel tanks, one on each side that hold approx 50 gallons each. If you don't know the history of Skater boats, check them out on YouTube or Google. These are world champion offshore powerboats, and this size (24ft) hasn't been made since the 90's so they are hard to come by. The engines were rebuilt by the best on the business (Marty and Joe Signorelli) and they are the only ones that have ever cracked them open. The engines started their life in freshwater and over the course of 14 years only had 140hrs put on them. These are pure race engines built to run at high rpm's for long distances, and these are also no longer produced by Mercury Marine so a nice pair like these are very rare. All of the ravings on our 388 instilled a desire to build a new 388 on steroids.  Size wise, the 438 is a 10% enlargement of the 388.  10% deeper tunnel, 10% longer running surface, 10% wider sponson, 10% wider tunnel, etc., etc., etc. However for many years now, we had been thinking of a radical bottom design change that would give the boat outstanding rough water capabilities along with an improved top end performance along with tremendous range and load carrying capacity. It is well-known that a fully loaded cat or V suffers a performance loss under these conditions, one reason why our competitors offer fuel capacities that are a third to a half of what Skater offers. Well, the bar has been set higher once again.  The 438 will run at very high speeds with 1350 Mercruiser engines and fully loaded with both passengers and 600 gallons of fuel.  Now, that’s impressive! A long running surface and a 12’+ beam allow this boat and others above 38’ to accommodate our ultra-wide cockpit with comfortable seating for 8-9 adults.

First Verado 400R-Powered Skater 28 Reaches 120 MPH

Yesterday’s tests of the first  Skater Powerboats  28 catamaran powered by twin  Mercury Racing  Verado 400R outboard engines delivered impressive results, not the least of which was a top speed of 120 mph. Tony Cutsuries, the Douglas, Mich., company’s national sales manager, put the 28-footer, which was outfitted with Mercury Racing CNC 15” x 34” five-blade propellers, through its paces on Lake Michigan.

“We were on the limiters with the 34s so the boat could handle more propeller,” Cutsuries said. “But it was pretty rough out there and the boat ran really, really strong. Actually, the boat is  phenomenal .”

According to Skater founder and owner Peter Hledin, he and his crew have built more than 100 of the vaunted 28-footers. While Hledin said the Verado 400R-powered model wasn’t the fastest one he’d ever built (“I believe we did some with modified 2.5-liter outboards that were faster,” he said), the catamaran worked beautifully with the twin 400-hp outboard setup. To accommodate their weight, he reinforced the boat’s transom.

Skater also added a windscreen on the deck and installed a pair of 80-gallon fuel cells. Beyond those additions, everything about the 28-footer was standard.

Denny Cassel, the boat’s 71-year-old owner who lives in Brookville, Ohio, ran the cat to 96 mph in two- to three-foot chop and was “blown away” by its performance. Cassel owns a cabin on the shore of Intermediate Lake, which is connected to several other waterways, in Northern Michigan and plans to keep the boat there.

“I have always had speed in my blood, and I tell my wife, ‘I like fast cars—I just ordered a Dodge Demon and it will do the quarter-mile in 9.65 seconds—and fast women, and you’re the fastest woman I have ever had,’ ” he said, then laughed. “The Skater 28 suits me just fine. I wanted something reliable and economical to operate. There are a lot of guys with bigger boats who are still keeping them these days, but also stepping into something more manageable.

“In that three- to four-foot chop, I was amazed how the boat performed and I wasn’t nervous at all,” he continued. “It just floated right along. That’s going to make my wife happy because she gets a little nervous when it’s rough. I can’t wait to get up to the cabin to run it around and have fun. I plan to do that all summer.”

Cassel paused for a moment, then laughed again. “I had to work on Peter a little to get him to put a windshield on it,” he said. “At first, he just wanted to build it with a faring.

Wiindshield or not, Hledin said he was delighted to add a Verado 400R-powered to his Skater 28 construction resume.

“I think we’ve built more 28s than any other model we’ve ever had,” he said. “There was a five-year lull there where we didn’t build any, and then one guy ordered one, then another guy, then another guy. The 28 always seems to get rejuvenated.

“It certainly is fast and runs to 120 quite easily,” he continued. “It could use more propeller, but the customer is more interested in acceleration and taking out his grandkids. The difference between running 120 and 125 mph isn’t important to him. It’s a very fun and pleasant-to-drive boat—and I think the windshield really helps hold down the boat. And it’s comfortable. You don’t feel any turbulence in the cockpit.”
