Sailing yacht ELTON (ex Lunar Mist, Cinderella II) from Trident is a 31.7m/104ft sloop-rigged vessel built in 1992 and last refitted in 20121. Bill Tripp was the naval architect, and her hull is constructed of composite materials to reduce her draft and increase comfort and stability on board.

While up to 12 guests can remain on board while cruising, the overnight accommodation provides for eight guests in four ensuite cabins: one Master suite, one VIP, and two double cabins. The Master ensuite features a bathtub and shower, a sink, and a toilet. The other ensuite bathrooms are equipped with a sink, toilet, and shower. All cabins have a double bed, plenty of wardrobe space, and a skylight for plenty of natural illumination.

The lower deck hosts the guest and crew accommodation and the galley, with the area amidships dedicated to the lower lounge. There, a J-shaped sofa and armchair are placed around a coffee table to port, and an L-shaped sofa and elevated table to starboard along with movable chairs. Above is a cozy nook to port filled with a C-shaped sofa and a table that extends outwards, perfect for coffee mornings and board games together as a family.

A pair of Kohler 27kW engines give a top speed of 12.5 knots, a cruising speed of 9 knots, and a range of 1.200 nautical miles. The cockpit aft of amidships provides a comfortable place for guests to unwind in the sunshine or under a bimini shade and is furnished with C-shaped sofas on both sides, the port side having a large fold-out table for alfresco dining with the whole group.

Broad sunbeds are placed behind, followed by the helm controls, which also have their own canvas shelter for use in various weather conditions. The stern leads down to the swim platform, where a swim ladder grants access to the sea. The foredeck stores the tender, and while at anchor, guests can use this space for sunbathing, observation, and exercise.

Captain - Dean Chamberlain Dean was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was here he developed his love for sailing. Introduced to boats at a young age by his father, Dean took up sailing as a sport and has competed in Regattas all around the country. Dean completed his RYA Yacht master and started sailing around the Cayman Island where he was able to build his experience as a Skipper and indulge in some of his favourite pastimes, photography and watersports. He has since built up an impressive ten years’ experience as a Charter Captain in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Strong and confident on the water, Dean looks forward to sharing his knowledge and tailoring the perfect experiences for his guests. Stewardess - Hayley Richards Hayley is from the coastal town of Durban, South Africa. Growing up near the ocean gave her love for the water and she enjoys surfing and scuba diving. She has a lot of experience in customer facing roles and is a confident and welcoming Stewardess who thrives on making sure her guests have everything they need. She has a fine eye for detail and her experience as a Graphic Artist means she is always perfecting every detail. She’s also great at making cocktails and can’t wait to welcome you aboard with a glass of your favourite tipple.

Built by Windship Trident in 1992, with a full service in 2023 and an interior refit and new rigging in 202, at 31.7m, S/Y Elton (ex Lunar Mist, Cinderella II) offers charter guests a spacious and stylish approach to sailing.Her 2023 service included all of the yacht’s major technical components, engine, generators, bow thrusters etc, while her major refit in 2021 saw her turned into an elegant and spacious option for those seeking a luxury sailing experience.During the refit the mast was taken down and fully restored and the interior received all new upholstery, new panelling, new artwork and new linens and finishings, giving her a fresh and contemporary look. The vessel’s sophisticated exterior design and engineering are the work of Tripp Design, while her timeless interior is the work of renowned superyacht designer Donald Starkey.She accommodates up to eight guests overnight with up to three crew members to ensure guests have an exquisitely comfortable and luxurious experience throughout every charter.Performance wise, a top speed of 12.5 knots and a cruising speed of 9 knots ensure relaxed sailing and excellent performance on the water, with propulsion from a diesel powered Lugger engine, with 15,000 hours to date.The aft deck serves as the perfect place for guests to unwind in the sun, with an optional Bimini when shade is required. There are C-shaped sofas either side and a large table for alfresco group dining and cocktails on an evening. The stern leads down to the swim platform, where the swim ladder grants easy access to the ocean.All cabins are en-suite and have a double bed, plenty of wardrobe space and a skylight for plenty of natural illumination. The Master en-suite has a bathtub and shower, plus a vanity and head. The other en-suite bathrooms all feature a vanity, head and shower.

The yacht had an extensive refit in 2021 with a renewal of upholstery, panelling, art work, linens and finishings, new rigging, a restored mast so that today she comes with a fresh and contemporary look. Four cabins accommodate as many as eight guests. She offers a master cabin with plentiful storage, closet space, and en-suite bathroom with bath tub. Additionally, she has a V.I.P. cabin and two double guest cabins, each with en-suite facilities.

Her main salon has a cozy wrap around lounge with coffee table in the middle. The dining area features L shaped lounge with high back chairs. Up on deck there are sun pads for lying out and a cockpit that offers al fresco dining with two tables and opposite facing lounges.

The fully equipped galley and guest cabins are located below deck, with the amidships dedicated to the saloon area. All cabins are en-suite and have a double bed, plenty of wardrobe space and a skylight for natural illumination. The Master en-suite has a bathtub and shower, plus a vanity and head. The bodies of a thrill-seeking Canadian couple were found in a life raft Wednesday — nearly six weeks after they left on a sailing trip across the Atlantic Ocean, according to a report.

Brett Clibbery, 70, and Sarah Justine Packwood, 54, apparently abandoned their yacht and perished on a life raft before washing up on Sable Island, nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” the Vancouver Sun reported.

Canadian authorities have not officially identified the tragic pair as the victims, but told the outlet that the 10-foot life raft was believed to be from a larger vessel named Theros — the same eco-friendly boat the couple had routinely documented on their travel blog account.

Clibbery and Packwood set sail on the 39-foot yacht from Halifax on June 11 with plans to cross the Atlantic to the Azores, a series of islands 900 miles west of Portugal, by July 2.

The pair were documenting their journey on their YouTube channel “Theros Adventures,” which they used to demonstrate how to travel the world via electric-, wind- and solar-powered vessels.

Their trip to the Azores was meant to be the first fully “green” journey on Theros, which the couple dubbed the Green Odyssey after they removed its diesel engine.

They had tried to cross the Atlantic in the boat once before in 2019, but were stopped by a forecast of storms.

On the day of their journey, Clibbery and Packwood shared a video that put them 16 nautical miles off the coast of Nova Scotia with fair winds and calm seas.

The video was their last. They were reported missing one week later.

Sable Island is about 175 miles south of Halifax.

Theros is still missing, the Times Colonist reported.

What went wrong and why the couple abandoned their beloved boat is still a mystery.

The pair got married on the yacht in 2016, one year after they met during a chance encounter at a bus stop in London, England.

Packwood was preparing to donate a kidney to her sister when she met Clibbery, who was visiting from Canada — a heartwarming story that was the center of a 2020 “How We Met” piece in The Guardian.

“We have been traveling and co-creating adventures ever since,” Packwood previously posted on YouTube.

Couple in homemade yacht who died and washed ashore in a life raft could have been hit by larger ship, experts suggest

E xperts have offered theories about how a thrill-seeking Canadian couple’s attempted transatlantic sailing expedition turned tragic last month, positing their homemade vessel may have been struck by a much larger ship soon after they departed Halifax on the country’s North East coast.

Earlier this month, the bodies of Brett Clibbery, 70, and Sarah Justine Packwood, 54, were found on a life raft washed up on Sable Island, Nova Scotia.

The area is ominously nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” due to the large number of shipwrecks that wind up on its shores.

An official investigation is underway, and although no concrete answers have yet come to light, one leading theory is that their boat was badly damaged by a much larger vessel, forcing the couple to seek refuge in the life raft.

“While they do not have conclusive proof, [investigators] suspect the sailboat … was struck by a bulk carrier likely only a few days after departing Halifax,” a source close to the investigation revealed to Saltwire .

Investigators have reportedly inspected a carrier ship that was in the same area as the couple’s boat — named Theros — at the outset of its voyage, but the results of the probe have not been released to the public.

“The crew of the carrier ship told investigators there were no signs of damage and they were unaware of any collision with a smaller vessel,” the Daily Mirror writes.

The source surmised that the ship’s homemade additions might have presented additional problems, and veteran sailors told the outlet the excessive ballast from batteries and solar panels could have destabilized the boat.

The pair set sail June 11 on a journey that was supposed to take them across the Atlantic Ocean from Halifax to the Azores in their 42-foot yacht, which the couple built themselves.

The eco-friendly boat, which operated without a diesel engine, was due to arrive at its destination by July 2, to serve as a demonstration of how it’s possible to travel the world with electric, wind and solar-powered vessels.

The excursion was to be the couple’s first fully “green” journey on Theros, the building of which the couple chronicled on their YouTube channel, “Theros Adventures.”

Despite the swirling theories about how the doomed voyage turned deadly, the Canadian transportation safety board has not made any formal announcements indicating what happened

“At this time, we cannot say with complete certainty that the sailing vessel was struck by a ship, as we are still gathering information regarding the overdue sailing vessel Theros,” a spokesman said.

Clibbery’s son, Brett, posted a loving tribute to the couple on Facebook, acknowledging the last few days had been really hard for the family, and news to emerge from the investigation has left it “hard to remain hopeful.”

He continued, “They were amazing people, and there isn’t anything that will fill the hole that has been left by their, so far, unexplained passing.

“Living will not be the same without your wisdom, and your wife was quickly becoming a beacon of knowledge, and kindness. I miss your smiles. I miss your voices. You will be forever missed.”

The most boats ever will compete in the 100th Bayview Yacht Club race to Mackinac Island

Billed on its website as the “world’s longest continuously run long-distance freshwater yacht race,” the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race is set to start Saturday.

A record-setting 334 boats have registered for the 100th year of the race, shattering the record of 316 in 1985 and a huge contrast compared with the 200 boats that raced last year, said David Stoyka, spokesman for the Bayview Yacht Club, which puts on the race.

Bayview Yacht Club says boats start leaving the Black River in Port Huron around 8 a.m. on race day and will continue leaving until around noon. From the Black River, they will proceed up the St. Clair River, under the Blue Water Bridge, into Lake Huron.

The first scheduled start time in Lake Huron is 11:30 a.m., with starts every 10 minutes until approximately 1:30 p.m. The starts may be delayed due to weather conditions.

This year, for the 100th running, the race will follow the original 1925 route and span 204 nautical miles. From the starting point, the boats will head north along the Michigan shoreline, passing south of Bois Blanc Island, sailing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island, organizers said.

The range of boats are expected to finish in between 30 and 60 hours.

The sailors

Teams at all skill levels have entered the race, which draws competitors from around the world.  The highly skilled racers know they will cross the bow of competitors within inches. Still, there's always risk of a crash with the slightest miscalculation.

"Everybody recognizes this is super intense," said champion sailor  Tim Prophit , 65, of St. Clair Shores, past commodore of Bayview Yacht Club and owner of Fast Tango, a North American 40 sailboat.

The teams are vying for trophies and flags to show their accomplishments.

The J.L. Hudson Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division I, and the Canadian Club Classic Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division II.

How can spectators follow the race?

Spectators can go to bycmack.com during the race and click on “RaceTracking” link to watch real-time GPS positioning of all the race boats, or, on your mobile device, download the free app YB Races and select the current race.

Boats will start arriving at Mackinac Island on Sunday afternoon and continue until Monday evening, all dependent upon the wind.

Finishes can be seen from Windermere Point on Mackinac Island at the south end of Main Street.

Sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races are called “Old Goats,” according to the club, while those who have completed 50 are called “Grand Rams.” 

"Double Goats" are sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races and 25 Chicago Yacht Club race to Mackinac races. This year’s Chicago to Mackinac race encountered strong winds in Lake Michigan , snapping some boats’ masts and tossing one sailor overboard. No one was hurt.

Volunteers who have served for 15 years on the Race Committee are honored with the title “Old Forts,” as designated by the Race Committee.

Orcas sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a sailing yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service said on Monday, a new attack in what has become a trend in the past four years.

The vessel Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49 feet) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday, the service said.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the ship. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar.

The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of  recurring orca rammings  around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.

Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis.”

According to the research group GTOA, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, with leading theories including it being a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to eight metres and weigh up to six tonnes as adults.

Couple Who Attempted to Cross Atlantic Found Dead in Lifeboat

The bodies of two sailors who planned to sail from Nova Scotia to the Azores using green energy were found washed ashore at a Canadian national park this month, four weeks after they were last seen, the authorities said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to calls on July 10 that a 10-foot inflatable lifeboat containing human remains had been discovered on Sable Island National Park Reserve, according to a news release from the agency .

The authorities did not identify the remains, but said they believed they were those of a 70-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman from British Columbia. A Facebook post by the man’s son, James Clibbery, later identified them as James Brett Clibbery and his wife, Sarah Justine Packwood, who had left Halifax Harbor in Nova Scotia on June 11 bound for the Azores. They were reported missing on June 18.

“The past few days have been very hard,” the younger Mr. Clibbery said in the post, adding that DNA tests would be carried out to confirm their identities. “With all the news, it is hard to remain hopeful.”

“There isn’t anything that will fill the hole that has been left by their, so far unexplained, passing,” he said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said it was investigating the deaths. A spokesman for the agency did not immediately return a request for comment on Monday.

Sable Island is a “thin crescent of shifting sand” that is about 180 miles southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Canadian government said , adding that the area is widely known for its variety of wildlife and its proximity to more than 350 shipwrecks.

The couple had chronicled much of their sailing activities and travels on social media.

In a video on their YouTube channel , Theros Adventures, the elder Mr. Clibbery said they had named their trip to the Azores “The Green Odyssey” to show it was possible to travel without burning fossil fuels. Their 42-foot GibSea sailboat was powered by electricity and solar energy, the couple said.

“It is to show that you can travel, and you can do long distances without burning fossil fuels, without climbing onto a plane and filling the air with carbon dioxide,” Mr. Clibbery said.

In their final post on social media on June 11, Mr. Clibbery, wearing a bright orange jacket with his silver hair tossing in the wind, described how the trip was just beginning.

With his hands steady on the helm, he took note of their speed and the distance they had so far traveled. Mr. Clibbery then looked at the camera and said with a smile, “We’re sailing.”
