Builder: Uljanik Length: 54.1m Year: 1952

Part of the “Six Poets” series by the Croatian shipyard, Seagull II ’s name is inspired by author and former President Vladimir Nazor. She served 50 years as a coastal passenger ship, a crucial mode of transport in the 50s that connected the cities of Dubrovnik, Rijeka, Kotor and Split. At the time, she was licensed to carry an impressive 700 passengers. A complete rebuild from 2004 to 2005 ushered in a renaissance for Seagull II , transforming her into a popular charter yacht. Bono and Henrik Christian, the crown prince of Denmark, are counted among her famous guests.

Seagull II is asking €5,900,000 with Fraser .

Northern Sun

Builder: Narasaki Shipbuilding Length: 51m Year: 1976

Delivered under the name Hokko Maru (“Northern Light”), this expedition vessel was the largest yacht built by Narasaki Shipbuilding at the time. It has lived an eclectic life, from working as an ice-class research vessel analysing currents in the North Japan sea, to travelling for ten years across Southeast Asia as a private superyacht with American owners, to becoming one of the most popular charter yachts cruising Thailand today, according to Ocean Independence. Northern Sun will be taking on her breakout television role this July as the star yacht of Below Deck Down Under season two.

Northern Sun is asking $15,000,000 with Ocean Independence .

Builder: HMA Naval Dockyard Length: 50m Year: 1973

Built in 1973, Plan B 's ‘Plan A’ was joining the military. Known then as HMAS Flinders , she served Royal Australian Navy’s hydrographic survey fleet for over 20 years. Later, she was decommissioned and turned into a private expedition vessel, cruising extensively to the Arctic Circle, Patagonia, New Zealand, Galapagos Islands, Easter Islands and Myanmar. Plan B's heavy-duty credentials are still evident in her militaristic profile and the Airbus H145 helicopter stowed on her sundeck, complete with refuelling capabilities for longer passages. All major machinery and systems have been upgraded, including a full rebuild of the main engines between 2018 and 2019.

Plan B is listed by Christie Yachts with POA.

Builder: Denizcilik Length: 39m Year: 1975

Custom built in Turkey, Trafalgar enjoyed a spell of fame when, under her previous name of Moonmaiden II , she appeared in the James Bond film The Living Daylights. In the opening sequence, Timothy Dalton parachutes onto Trafalgar , meeting Bond girl Linda (played by Belle Avery) and delivering the classic (read: cheesy) line: "Better make that two". Trafalgar was taken to the UK in 2016 for an extensive refit and rebuild. This saw her technical system upgraded and her interiors refreshed with satin-finish French mahogany furniture.

Trafalgar is asking €2,350,000 with Ocean Independence .

Weatherbird

Builder: Chantier Naval De Normandie Length: 31m Year: 1931

Weatherbird was designed by Henri Rambaud and her captain Vladimir Orloff, a Russian aristocrat who fled to France after the murder of his father by the Bolsheviks. This twin-masted schooner caught the tail-end of 1920s prosperity, entertaining cultural icons such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Coco Chanel in revelries along the French Riviera. Louis Armstrong was also a guest, after whom the sailing yacht was named – in fact, a copy of his “Weatherbird” rag record was symbolically melded into the keel mid-build. Commissioned by American expatriates Sarah and Gerald Murphy, you can find a dedication to the couple on the first page of Fitzgerald’s novel Tender is the Night. In 1933, as Mussolini rose to power and the health of their son Patrick declined, the Murphys left for America, never to return. 

Weatherbird is asking €3,370,000 with Northrop and Johnson .

Fredrikstad

Builder: Smedvik Mek Length: 22.9m Year: 1968

This classic Norwegian vessel was named in honour of the citizens of Fredrikstad that commissioned and paid for her as a rescue boat in 1968. Fredrikstad saved 11 lives and performed more than 600 rescues across her 20 years in service. In 1988, the boat was decommissioned and sold to a private individual in Oslo, who used it for salvage and exploration. In 1996, she was purchased by Peter de Savary of America’s Cup fame, who stripped the boat to bare frames for a major restoration that transformed Fredrikstad into the yacht she is today. Her most recent refit was in 2021 at Cantieri Navali di La Spezia.

Fredrikstad is asking €850,000 with Fraser .

Builder: Herreshoff Length: 21.9m Year: 1926

Rugosa is a New York Yacht Club 40, the most coveted model in Herreshoff’s NYYC One-Design series. Built as a yawl, she has proven herself a hardy and accomplished racer, winning the 1928 Bermuda Race under the ownership of Russell Grinnell and famously beating 58 top classics in the 2001 Americas Cup Jubilee in Cowes. Her most tenured owner is Halsey Herreshoff, the grandson of her designer, who cruised and raced extensively on Rugosa across 30 years and several continents, including the USA and Europe.

Rugosa’s most recent major refit was in 2007. Another refit is expected by the next custodian in order to bring her back to her prime condition.

Rugosa is asking €475,000 with Edmiston .

Builder: Souters of Cowes Length: 14.9m Year: 1963

Outlaw was famously owned by Maxwell Aitken, WWII fighter pilot and president of the Daily Express. In her very first season, this cold-mould yacht led the British Admiral Cup team to victory and was the overall winner of the Royal Ocean Racing Club's Class I Points Series. Starting as she meant to go on, Outlaw achieved a remarkable string of victories, including finishing as the first British boat in the 1967 Fastnet Race. She was found abandoned in 1983 by her current owner but an 18-month refit saw her rejuvenated and ready to cruise warmer waters. Outlaw spent six years travelling across Portugal, Gibraltar and the Balearics before finally settling down on the Côte d’Azur in 1989. This sailing yacht is still well-known on the Med circuit, most recently winning the Panerai Overall Classic Trophy in 2005. She has also successfully completed two transatlantic crossings.

Outlaw is asking €250,000 with Edmiston .

Legacy of Earl Sommerville's wild azalea hybrids live on at Birdsong Nature Center

The state of Georgia has about 12 species of native azaleas which have crossed and back crossed, creating interesting and beautiful natural hybrids.

Native azalea enthusiast Earl Sommerville searched for and collected these plants through most of his long life. He was known for his garden near Little Kennesaw Mountain where he grew thousands of colorful and fragrant wild azaleas and developed a successful method of propagation from cuttings.

As a young man Sommerville was a deer hunter. In the spring he would walk the woods looking for deer signs and tag unusual azaleas he found in bloom. When he came back to hunt in the fall he would bring his shovel. “You can get a lot of azaleas in a 1960 Volkswagen,” he said. By the 1980’s he said he could barely stay ahead of the bulldozers.

In the early 1990’s his friend Ed Stephens gave him a plant that he found growing near Milledgeville, a hybrid of the richly colored Rhododendron flammeum.

The plant had deep magenta blooms, with a yellow flare —the nearest to purple of any azalea he’d ever seen, said Sommerville. The original plant is now 40 years old. Sommerville propagated it from seed, and from tissue culture, which he learned to do in his 70’s. He named it “Magenta Rose.”

Birdsong Nature Center is lucky to have this gorgeous, hard to find, and unusual azalea from Sommerville’s collection, as well as several others of his hybrids. Although Earl passed away last October, his legacy lives on in the unique beauty of his many beloved crosses.

These rare plants will be for sale at Birdsong’s Old-Timey Plant Sale for the next two weekends, along with our local pink and white native R. canescens, and the golden yellow R. austrinum.

You can shop for the above interesting plants on both these dates, as well as many other wild azalea cultivars, native trees, shrubs, blueberries, pollinator plants, and other old-timey pass-along plants.

Admission to the Center is free that day. Please come and enjoy the plant sale and then go for a walk to see some early spring wildflowers!

Choosing the neighborhood of your future residence is a task to be treated with diligence. Poor transport accessibility, a lacking infrastructure and unsatisfactory ecological parameters may noticeably dampen the joy a new property owner is sure to feel from their purchase. To help you avoid such a scenario, we have put together a short overview of the areas in Moscow where you may be considering the purchase of a home , complete with the pros and cons of each of the different locations:

Arbat District – the cultural and business center of Moscow. One of the most prestigious locations in the capital. It boasts a very good infrastructure and high transport accessibility. Unsurprisingly, the property costs here are the highest in Moscow. Despite its small size, the district contains around 10% of all of the capital’s new elite residential buildings, and apartments for sale make up 96% of the properties on the market in this neighborhood. The price of a square meter (3.28 sqft) for an apartment in a new building with penthouses is, on average, 12 000 USD, while the cost of the same in an old building is 9 000 USD. One can even find luxury condos with open terraces for sale in the area.

Kuntsevo District – a beautiful locality surrounded by vast areas of woodland and river beaches on the banks of Moskva River. A strong point of this neighborhood is its good environmental conditions. Brand new and modern residential compounds have been erected here. One square meter (3.28 sqft) of an apartment in a new housing complex in Kuntsevo District currently costs 3 000 USD.

Yakimanka District – one of the most interesting and prestigious areas of Moscow by popular opinion. It is packed full of well-known historic monuments, museums and large parks. The Yakimanka District changed drastically during the Soviet era: most of the centuries-old low-rise houses and mansions were completely demolished or restructured. By the beginning of the 1990’s, new residential and public complexes had already taken their place. Today, one can find condos for sale in Yakimanka’s new residential complexes for the average price of 11 000 USD per square meter (3.28 sqft). The price of a square meter in a Soviet era panel building is 4 000 USD.

Here in Russia’s capital we have our own skyscrapers – grouped together in the compound famously dubbed Moscow-City (the Moscow International Business Center). What to Know About the Clean Auto Rule: It’s Not a Ban on Gas Cars

The measure aims to encourage sales of electric vehicles and hybrids. Here’s how it works.

The Biden administration’s new regulation limiting tailpipe emissions from cars and light trucks would transform the American automobile market, charting a course away from the internal combustion engine and toward a future of electric cars and hybrids.

Here’s what to know about the measure.

It’s a big deal in the fight against climate change

In terms of lowering the emissions that are heating the planet, this regulation does more than any other climate rule issued by the federal government and more than any measure planned in the remainder of Mr. Biden’s first term.

That’s partly because transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gases generated by the United States. It’s also because the rule is objectively ambitious. The rule is projected to eliminate more than seven billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere over the next 30 years, more than all the greenhouse gases produced by the entire United States economy in one year. And, because the United States is a huge auto market, analysts project that companies making cleaner cars in the United States will start to sell them on the global market as other governments enact or move toward similar standards.

The rule is not a ban on gasoline-powered vehicles

The rule does not mandate sales of electric vehicles, and consumers can still buy and drive gas-powered cars. Rather, it requires car makers to meet tough new average emissions limits across their entire product lines; it’s up to manufacturers to decide how to meet those limits.

Under the Clean Air Act, the Environmental Protection Agency can limit the pollution generated by the total number of cars each year. E.P.A. officials said that, as long as automakers comply with the emissions rules, they can sell a mix of gasoline-burning cars, hybrids, E.V.s or other types of vehicles, such as cars powered by hydrogen.

The rule does not apply to sales of used vehicles.

It penalizes carmakers, not consumers, for noncompliance

Starting in model year 2027, when the rule takes effect, car companies will report to the E.P.A. the average emissions associated with all the passenger vehicles they sell. The emissions limits will start modestly and ramp up slowly in the early years of the program, rising sharply after 2030. Companies that don’t meet the emissions limits would have to pay fines that could reach into the billions of dollars.

Success depends on consumer behavior

Whether American roadways fill with nonpolluting vehicles hinges on a central question: Will motorists buy them? Early adopters flocked to E.V.s, but sales have cooled and carmakers are concerned they need more time to develop the market. That’s one reason the E.P.A. pushed back the most stringent emissions requirements for auto sales until after 2030, so that manufacturers could improve designs and develop more affordable models, and for charging infrastructure to be built.

Trump could roll back the rule, but not quickly or easily

Mr. Trump has vowed to “terminate” the Biden administration’s climate rules “on Day 1.” But now that the car rule is final, it will be more difficult and time-consuming, though not impossible, for a future administration to roll it back. And even if it were, the Clean Air Act requires that it be replaced with another rule controlling greenhouse pollution from vehicles.

Its fate is likely to be decided by the Supreme Court

The rules are expected to face an immediate legal challenge by a coalition of fossil fuel companies and Republican attorneys general, complaints that are likely to wind their way to the Supreme Court. The 6-3 conservative majority on the court has, in recent years, taken steps to limit the authority of the E.P.A. In a 2022 decision on another major E.P.A. climate rule , the court sharply limited, but did not strike down, the agency’s authority to limit greenhouse pollution from power plants.

Police are searching for a 45-year-old man accused of slashing a woman multiple times on her face during an argument at the South Ferry subway station in Manhattan Saturday morning.

Authorities identified Ever Danny Briceno as the man who approached a 37-year-old woman at the downtown Manhattan subway station around 1 a.m.

After the two got into a “verbal altercation,” the argument escalated and Briceno slashed the woman “multiple times on her face, causing lacerations,” cops said.

Briceno and the victim knew each other, according to police.

The nature of the relationship was not immediately known.

Briceno fled the subway station on foot following the alleged attack, officials said.

Emergency responders rushed the victim to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue, where she is in stable condition.

Anyone with information regarding Briceno’s location is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
