Why Canadians are lucky Rona Ambrose was hanging around the Caribbean with a billionaire

Anyone can yacht. It takes a certain boldness, though, to excoriate someone for hanging around an island in the Caribbean with a billionaire while you’re yachting around the Caribbean with another billionaire.

Well, it’s nice to have assistants to send out the press releases and do your Tweeting for you, I guess, when you’re soaking up the sun on deck at an undisclosed location somewhere in the Caribbean Sea.

My guess, though, is that the distinction will be lost on most Canadians, who don’t have friends who happen to be billionaires, or even millionaires – especially when the rule that was broken seems to be a picayune one. This is true even though Ms. Ambrose bothered to check with the Parliamentary ethics officer, whereas Mr. Trudeau obviously didn’t before he slid into the leather seat of the Aga Khan’s chopper.

Indeed, this led me at the time of the original hoo-haw to suspect the angry reaction among the Conservative base had more to do with the Aga Khan’s religion – he is the hereditary spiritual leader of an estimated 20 million Ismaili Muslims – than with his reputed wealth, which is estimated to range from $800 million to $3 billion, or the fact his charity has done some work supported by the Canadian government.

As an oilsands investor, after all, Mr. Edwards has also benefited from a certain degree of Canadian government support.

As an aside, Mr. Veitch’s principal business address may explain why Ms. Ambrose is so seldom seen in her Sturgeon River Parkland riding, which is almost as close to my back porch here in St. Albert as Russia is to Sarah Palin’s porch in Wasilla, Alaska – that is to say, if you only cut down the trees to the west, you could practically see it.

I’m not defending Mr. Trudeau. I’m just sayin’ it was cheeky of Ms. Ambrose to make one of the key points of her attack on the PM the fact he was hangin’ out with a billionaire when, you know, she was hangin’ out with a billionaire.

The facts, as revealed by media and in particular iPolitics, which broke the story , are as follows: Mr. Trudeau and his family departed for the Aga Khan’s private Caribbean island on Boxing Day. Ms. Ambrose and her partner departed for Mr. Edwards’ yacht on Jan. 3.

On Jan. 11, Ms. Ambrose started Tweeting about the PM’s shortcomings, calling them his “latest ethics mess.” She (or someone working for her) Tweeted on the 12th that “all he had to do was say no, but he couldn’t resist the billionaire lifestyle.” (Emphasis irresistibly added.)

As we now know, Ms. Ambrose obviously understands just how irresistible the billionaire lifestyle is!

Alert readers will recall that back in the spring of 2016, Mr. Edwards’ name came up in another brouhaha promoted by the National Post, when he decamped from Cowtown for London, England, in the midst of what is now understood to have been a change in personal circumstances when he and his wife parted ways.

The Post, however, had a better story – based on statements by “sources” said to be “familiar with the situation” who “preferred not to be identified” – to wit, that Alberta’s New Democratic Party Government had raised taxes to a point they were onerous even to a billionaire.

As was noted in this space at the time, this narrative really didn’t make a lot of sense if you bothered to compare taxes in the United Kingdom with those in Alberta, not to mention the cost of living in London, a city so expensive even the billionaires there complain constantly about it.

Nevertheless, such fearless champions of the billionaire class as the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and the Fraser Institute jumped on the Post’s rickety bandwagon, attacking the “ideological soak-the-rich politicians” in Edmonton responsible for this outrage.

Nine months ago, however, Mr. Edwards seemed to admit in a Globe and Mail interview that the NDP’s tax structure had nothing at all to do with it. “London’s a great city,” he told the Globe’s scribe. “Moving to London was based on my personal circumstances, which I don’t want to go into, based upon a change of scenery.”

Still, the story of billionaires in flight from Alberta persists in Conservative circles.

So it occurs to me that we Canadians and Albertans are fortunate Ms. Ambrose is such a close friend of Mr. Edwards. She is, obviously, now in a position to set the record straight for her constituents, and for the rest of us.

Perhaps Ambrose would be more forgiving of Trudeau if he had vacationed with the “right ” kind of billionaire.

What if Trudeau had vacationed with Sheldon Adelson, or one of the Koch brothers? I wonder if the Cons would display as much faux moral outrage.

Hypocrisy seems to be a requirement among right-wingers.

Surprising more wasn’t made of Trudeau’s recent brush with another, more colourful, billionaire in Davos.

I generally make it a policy when referring to conservative billionaires to prefix their wealth designation with “evil.” So the phrase “Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire casino magnate” becomes “Sheldon Adelson, evil billionaire and casino magnate”, and “the billionaire Koch brothers” becomes “the Koch brothers, evil billionaires who actively deny climate change.”

While it seems somewhat cartoonish to think of a cabal of evil billionaires, that’s only because the media they own tries to make them into regular folks. But is there really much difference between the evil billionaires played by Will Ferrell and Mike Meyers and the Adelson/Koch variety?

I wonder if a clever but disgruntled assistant wrote the tweet. Ambrose is not known for her intelligence but surely she has more common sense than to draw attention to the “billionaire lifestyle” that she was currently enjoying. Hilarious.

Hate to say it, but this is a standard right wing ploy. If you are doing something sketchy, be the first one to hit the media with accusations that the other team is doing what you yourself intend to get away with.

We could make it easier on all taxpayers, if every time a conservative cried foul, journalists of David’s ilk got busy checking in to what the outraged conservative is up to.

Sometimes, it backfires however. Like when Joe Oliver started whining about ‘foreign environmental activists’ just after Chinese millions poured into the Northern Gateway scheme. If I remember correctly, Dogwood Initiative’s membership, and donations sky rocketed after that accusation hit the airwaves. Big money hates little money I know….but we should help them to remember that 99% is a hell of a majority.

The conservatives are pretty complacent however. They essentially own the media.

This reminds me of the old joke about the young grain trader who was taken into the top floor office of a grain oligarch. The oligarch pointed out various yachts in the harbour below which belonged to him and his fellow grain trade oligarchs. He told the young fellow if he worked hard “servicing the farmers” he could have one too.

Wide-eyed the novice trader said: “That’s wonderful, but where are all the farmers’ yachts?”

sure, everyone like to have roof over head, at least something in fridge and ability to look into tomorrow without fear but i never been able to grasp one thing – how many billions one’s need, to eventually get happiness and consider own life target fully accomplished? even worst, when some people, and quite plenty of such, who wasn’t been able to acheive too many of materialistic values, willing to jump out off their skin, in pretending of success and association with fortunate ones.

Val, your comment is so incoherent I can’t figure out what your point is. Perhaps, in writing it in the way you did, you’ve inadvertently succeeded in pointing out the need for all of us to support public education.

To paraphrase Animal Farm – “private yachts good, private planes bad.” I suppose this is the latest example of muddled conservative thinking in Ottawa – ethical problems exist not because of a violation of the rules, but because of the potential for a conflict of interest. The rules are written, however imperfectly to try and highlight potential problems, but they certainly can’t catch them all.

I would argue that Ms. Ambrose’s potential for conflict in this case are greater as a business operating mainly in Canada is likely to have more cause to ask for favours from the Canadian government than an international charitable/religious organization. While not insignificant, the Aga Khan certainly does not rely on the ongoing support of the Government of Canada to continue to carry out his charity’s international work. Most of his donors and supporters are from other countries.

While it is not clear Mr. Edwards left Alberta due to increased tax rates, Mr. Edwards would likely benefit from the lower corporate taxes that the Federal Conservatives and Ms. Ambrose advocate. Also, it couldn’t hurt Ms. Ambrose spouse’s career in the energy industry to spend a bit of quality time with a big player in that industry such as Mr. Edwards.

In case any constituents of Ms. Ambrose were wondering why they didn’t see her in Edmonton or Spruce Grove during the holidays, now we know why.

Perhaps according to the Conservatives, billionaire oilmen (formerly) from Calgary good, billionaire international charitable/religious leaders bad.

Be it noted, the “private plane”, actually a helicopter, was simply used to get to the Island and back. I suppose the Conservatives would have rather he’d taken a boat. Or walked, perhaps. Yes, apparently there’s a rule against accepting free air trips, but I can’t see how said rule was designed for these particular circumstances: it’s not like it was a free first class flight to Vegas. But the Conservative Noise Machine excels at spinning straw into fool’s gold.

I seem to recall reading, in a story about this in some MSM outlet or other, that Ms Ambrose didn’t notify the ethics commissioner of her little jaunt until well after she had gotten on board and the boat had cast off. If this is true, what would she have done had the ethics commish advised the trip was out of bounds… hopped into a lifeboat & rowed to shore? Swum ashore?

As for the PM, it is my understanding that the Aga Khan’s private helicopter is the only legal way to or from his island. Any other form of access would be trespass, which given the Cons’ dedication to protecting private property would have been even more objectionable in their eyes. Of course, logical consistency is hardly a Conservative strong suit …

All in all, this is just a minor scandal, hardly even worthy of the word, especially in light of the fecal exhibition going on south of the Medicine Line. I think we all need to put these things into some sort of reasonable perspective.

N. Murray Edwards

2014 Horatio Alger Award Winner — Chairman, Canadian Natural Resources Limited

“The secret to success is to be passionate about what you do every day.”

N. Murray Edwards was born in 1959 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. He is the grandson of immigrants. His father’s parents came from England, and his mother’s parents came from Wales. One was a farmer, the other a blacksmith. “My grandparents were homesteaders,” says Murray. “They came to a place where there were no basic necessities of life, so they had to be entrepreneurial to get established. They had to depend on neighbours, which gave them a sense of collaboration as they progressed. I think I have a sense of those traits—entrepreneurism and collaboration.”

With a lot of hard work, Murray’s father became an accountant and his mother was a primary-school teacher. They raised their three children (Murray is the middle child) simply and modestly in a home that emphasized the importance of education. “My mother would give us workbooks for phonics and language and math, even before we started school,” says Murray. “She was always teaching us kids, and she gave us a real desire to learn. My father was more the taskmaster. He challenged us to succeed and achieve.”

The Saskatchewan winters are long and cold. Like most Canadians Murray grew up playing hockey. He and his friends made an outdoor skating rink at the end of his street. “Sometimes it gets to minus 20 degrees in Regina,” says Murray. “We just had to pour water on the rink, and it would be ready for skating the next morning. I joke today that my hockey skills peaked when I was nine years old. I was one of the top scorers in the city then, but I lost my scoring touch after that. Most players lose their touch in their 30s! It’s a bit of a joke today because I own the Calgary Flames hockey team of the National Hockey League.”

As a child, Murray says that he was curious, adventurous, and passionate about learning—but that did not always translate into being a model student. “I frustrated my teachers, I think,” he says. “I wasn’t always a diligent student or attentive in my classes. I did well academically, but I was always looking for something more challenging or interesting. I asked questions and read a lot, trying to understand a concept. I pushed the limits and tried to go outside the four walls around me.”

For a long time, Murray wanted to be a politician when he grew up. In high school he attended conferences on government affairs and policy. To earn money, he worked throughout high school as a hockey referee, which took him all over the city four nights a week. Upon his graduation, he was as a junior member of the garbage crew at a summer resort. This job provided Murray with strong motivation to succeed in his university years.

Murray first attended the College of Commerce at the University of Saskatchewan. He had several academic scholarships and also took out a few loans to pay for his college education. Each summer he worked, and fondly remembers one summer job at a beer factory, which offered him unlimited beer on his breaks. “The novelty of that soon wore off, though,” he says.

He surprised himself after taking a few business courses—how he fell in love with the concept of markets and their impact on world affairs. He had always wanted to go to law school, but now his political aspirations waned and his interests turned to business. He also became involved in campus politics and served as a student representative.

Murray graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Commerce degree with great distinction; and he received the President’s Medal as the most distinguished graduate. He also won the Xerox Canada prize as the most distinguished graduate from the College of Commerce, which is now named the Edwards School of Business, after a major financial gift to the school by Mr. Edwards.

Murray then attended the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto, where he continued his strong academic success. “I don’t think I was the most hard-working student or among the more diligent,” he says. “I just have a gift for solving problems. I think that is a result of my excellent education. I learned how to think on my feet. To go to university and simply churn out exams is not the best result you want from a college.”

Murray graduated from the University of Toronto with honours in 1983. The day after his graduation ceremony, he drove 30 hours over three days to start work at a large law firm in Calgary, Alberta, called Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer. “I worked hard right from the start,” he says. “I was competing with a dozen ardent associates for permanent slots that would only go to a quarter of us. I worked long hours, but I enjoyed it. It was a learning process for me—and one thing I was quickly learning was that law is a client-driven business that leaves you little time for a life of your own.”

Murray’s hard work quickly paid off, as he became a partner within four years. That’s when one of his best friends became ill. “My friend developed a cancerous brain tumor,” says Murray. “In one year, I saw him undergo six operations and struggle to live through his treatments. But through it all, he continued to do the things he was passionate about, which for him was investment banking. As my friend lay dying, I promised him I would always pursue my passions. For me, the practice of law had good things about it that I enjoyed, but I didn’t feel passionate about it. My friend’s death and my promise to him made me ask myself if this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. That’s when I decided at the age of 28 to leave the practice of law and pursue business.”

Murray joined forces with former colleagues to start a merchant bank, with each putting in $100,000— which for Murray was all he had saved since becoming an attorney. They began by looking for investments in the oil and natural gas industry. “Looking back on it, I guess you could say I was taking a big risk with my savings. But I was very excited about business and investment, and I told myself if I failed, I could always return to practicing law. I believed then— and still do—that it’s better to try something and fail at it, than to not try at all.”

Over time Murray Edwards has become one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Canadian history with a wide range of business interests including oil and natural gas, energy services, mining, aerospace, ski resorts, and the National Hockey League—as a co- owner of the Calgary Flames. His enterprises support more than 25,000 direct employees. He is a founding member of FirstEnergy Capital Corporation, a leading investment and banking firm. As chairman of Canadian Natural Resources Limited, which ranks among the top 50 oil companies in the world, he is a leader in the Canadian oil industry.

When Mr. Edwards returned to his alma mater, the University of Saskatchewan, to give a speech to the students, he said that he owes his success to three things. “The first,” he says, “is to have a good team of people. An organization with a CEO that has everything functioning up and down from this one person is an outdated management style. Today it’s more like working in rectangular boxes where a team of people have different skills sets. If you put them in a room together and coordinate those skill sets, you can achieve far more as a whole than as an individual. My particular skill set is being a leader, a challenger, and a motivator.”

The second thing Mr. Edwards believes is necessary for success is to have a plan or a process. “You need a strong vision, a strategic plan, and a budget process,” he says. “And the third thing you need is passion for what you do. Those three things: people, plan, and passion, along with a lot of hard work and a little luck will get you to success.”

When Murray Edwards started his first business, he and his partners had $2 million in the bank. Their first venture was drilling a planned natural gas well, which cost them $1 million and came up dry. “We’d already spent half our money,” he says. “We had to change our approach after that. Instead of the huge risk of drilling another well, we began doing acquisitions of assets with existing production. Fortunately, that turned out very well for us. We invested a few million dollars and within a few years, those assets were worth $200 million. It was a big win. But it showed me that in business you have to be committed to your path, you have to be flexible, and you have to always be on the lookout for other options and opportunities.”

Simply put, Murray Edwards says, “I love what I do. There is a line from the George Bernard Shaw play Pygmalion that says, ‘Happiest is the man who has his vocation for his hobby.’ What I do every day is my hobby, and most days I love it. I think that makes me a very fortunate man.”

Mr. Edwards has provided energy policy advice to the governments of Prime Ministers Chrétien, Martin, and Harper. His commitment to public policy development has included membership on the boards of directors of the Canada West Foundation, the CD Howe Institute, the Banff Centre, and the Canadian Council of Chief Executives.

One of the leading philanthropists in Calgary, Mr. Edwards supports, among others, literacy efforts, the Calgary Children’s Initiative, the Alberta Children’s Hospital, the Calgary United Way, the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, and the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan.

“My parents always ingrained in me that we were a part of a bigger society, which implied a commitment or obligation to give back—especially when you’ve had financial success,” says Mr. Murray. “I believe education is the great equalizer and so that is where I focus much of my philanthropy. But I also believe that another way to give back is through public service and helping to shape public policy. In North America, we have been blessed on the whole with good government, which is why we have such a high quality of life here. I think we are very lucky to live here.”

In 1999 he was designated by Time magazine as one of Canada’s Leaders for the 21st Century. In 2007 Mr. Edwards, a member of the Order of Canada, was named one of the University of Saskatchewan’s 100 Alumni of Influence.

CALGARY – Canadian billionaire energy mogul and Calgary Flames owner Murray Edwards is on the move again, relocating this time from rainy London to the posh Swiss ski resort town of St. Moritz.

Edwards is the executive chairman and a founder of Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., which in recent years has grown through a combination of acquisitions and newly finished oilsands projects to become the largest oil and gas producer in Canada by volume.

Originally from Saskatchewan, Edwards listed Calgary and Banff as his primary residence until 2016, when he left Alberta for London. At the time, he denied that he was leaving the province over a personal tax rate jump from 10 per cent to 15 per cent under the previous NDP government.

In Canadian Natural public disclosure documents filed March 27, Edwards now lists St. Moritz, Switzerland as his primary residence.

The company declined to comment on the reasons for the move or how Edwards splits his time between Calgary and Europe.

Edwards is also the executive chairman of Ensign Energy Services Inc. and Magellan Aerospace Corp. In addition, he controls Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, which owns and operates golf and ski resorts in Western Canada as well as Mont Saint-Anne and Stoneham Mountain Resort in Quebec.

The billionaire behind one of the biggest players in the Alberta oil sands and the co-owner of the Calgary Flames traces his roots back to Regina.

A member of the Order of Canada, N. Murray Edwards employs thousands of people across the nation through Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. and his other companies, which include several ski resorts. Yet despite a fortune that puts him on lists of the wealthiest in the country, Edwards’ beginnings are stereotypically Canadian.

His father was an accountant and his mother was a primary-school teacher. The middle child of three, Edwards grew up in Regina’s south end playing hockey and worked through high school refereeing. As a young man, his summer jobs included working on a garbage crew and at a beer factory.

He obtained a commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan, becoming one of the school’s most distinguished students along the way.  He went on earn a law degree in Toronto and, the day after graduating, drove 30 hours to start work as a lawyer in Calgary.

After a few years of law, he put his life savings towards starting a merchant bank. From there Edwards built his fortune through sound investments.

Arguably one of the nation’s greatest entrepreneurs, Edwards’ philanthropy takes a particular interest in education; which is perhaps a testament to his stated belief that education is the great equalizer.

He still has family in Regina and evidence of his ongoing attachment to Saskatchewan is not hard to find: for donating millions to the U of S, the business school was renamed the N. Murray Edwards School of Business.

Meet Murray Edwards the luckiest billionaire in Canada

Murray edwards is having a very good week, thanks to your tax dollars.

What do the Calgary Flames hockey team, the Mount Polley mine and the Trans Mountain oil tanker project have in common? They are all propped up with public money – and they all stand to make billionaire Murray Edwards even richer.

The wealthy financier lists his address in London, England to pay less tax. But that doesn’t stop him benefiting from the largesse of Canadian taxpayers.

Calgary’s tax dollars up in smoke?

Last week, Calgary city council unveiled an eye-popping giveaway to the Calgary Flames hockey team, co-owned by Edwards. If the deal is approved, Calgary taxpayers will pitch in $275 million to build the NHL team a sparkling new arena.

On the same day, city council voted for $60 million in budget cuts affecting 48 different programs and services, including affordable housing, public transit, firefighting and police. 233 city workers will lose their jobs.

Even the business community is up in arms . Since the 2014 oil price collapse, the city has scrambled to make up $1 billion in lost tax revenue. To compensate, they’ve resorted to hiking property taxes for business owners.

Now that cash is going to build a hockey palace for Murray Edwards and his oil patch buddies – while the city’s basic services crumble.

Politically connected

Before B.C. banned Big Money in provincial elections , Murray Edwards invested in friendly politicians, too. In 2013 he hosted a million-dollar fundraiser at the Calgary Petroleum Club for Christy Clark’s re-election bid. Six corporations linked to Edwards contributed nearly half a million dollars to the BC Liberals.

One of those companies is Imperial Metals, where Edwards is the controlling shareholder. In 2014 the tailings dam collapsed at Imperial’s Mount Polley mine, sending billions of litres of mine waste into Quesnel Lake and down the Fraser River. Not only was most of that waste never recovered – Imperial now has a permit to pump mine waste directly into Quesnel Lake.

Again, what little restoration work was done after the disaster was subsidized by taxpayers. British Columbians have paid nearly $40 million – and the place still looks like a moonscape.

The deadline to charge the company for destroying fish habitat is August 4 – five years after the dam breach. If no charges are laid by the long weekend, Imperial Metals and its shareholders will walk away from the biggest environmental disaster in B.C. history.

Of course if you or I dumped mine waste into a salmon stream, we would face huge fines or even a stint in jail. But not if you’re rich and well-connected. In that case, taxpayers pick up the bill.

Banking on bitumen

In May, Oklahoma-based Devon Energy Corporation offloaded its Canadian tar sands stake to another of Murray Edwards’ companies, Canadian Natural Resource Ltd. The $3.8 billion acquisition positions CNRL to be the biggest player in Alberta’s oil sands, producing 1.2 million barrels a day.

Where does all that heavy oil go? Most of it can’t be refined in Canada – it’s too thick and gooey. So it goes to refineries in the U.S. that can chew through sour, high-sulfur crude. Guess who’s on the hook to build a massive export pipeline? That’s right, Canadian taxpayers.

The Trans Mountain Expansion would drain 890,000 barrels a day to a tanker terminal in Burnaby. Sure, it would cost us $10 to $15 billion to build, but it would be a boon to oil sands companies betting on the world burning more and more heavy crude.

That’s why oil sands producers, including Murray Edwards and CNRL, have lobbied so aggressively to build Trans Mountain. It’s another massive public subsidy to companies that just saw a $2 billion boost in earnings thanks to corporate tax cuts .

Welfare for the rich

The “Welfare Queen” is a mythical figure in American culture. It was a racist, sexist trope used by politicians like Ronald Reagan to demonize poor people and pave the way for cuts to social programs in the 1980s and 90s.

But in a country like Canada, where the wealthiest are making record profits and still receiving billions in subsidies , the Welfare Queen may not be a myth at all. Perhaps they’re flying on private jets, cozying up to politicians, and maybe even taking up residence in different countries to avoid the tax man . Of course, when it comes to collecting handouts – they’re first in line.

Tell the B.C. government to reject Murray Edwards’ latest scheme – an open-pit gold mine next to Manning Park, in the headwaters of the Skagit River.

It’s time this that Murray Edwards and his companies pay for the disaster that they are responsible for the Mount Polley mine. Why must I as a tax payer foot the bill for what this clown has done and worse yet they are being allowed to continue to pump more waste into the Quesnel Lake. If that is not bad enough he and Imperial Metals wants another permit for another mine her in BC, I say no until you fix your other mess and pay back what you have received from tax payers! Also now he wants to bring us more sludge from Alberta to the coast to cause another disaster when a tanker collides with another vessel in a congested water way. This will be not a question of IF but when this will happen and then when it does WHO WILL BE STUCK WITH THE BILL FOR THE CLEAN UP. Reading on line I learned that this “sludge” is only cleaned up by loading onto trailers/trucks and hauled away not the usual method. Where the Tankers are coming in is 500 feet deep so digging it out to dispose of it will be near impossible! So do they have a plan in place other than “let the tax payers worry about it.” And will Murray Edwards run back to London England so he will pay little or no Taxes as usual and leave the clean up bill to the BC tax payer!

Election debates should include all leaders to state whether we actually have a working justice system, and to declare how we will have a “JUST SOCIETY ” ?

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Not exactly a humble beginning, but no one might have expected a 20-something lawyer ( who drove 30 hours the day after he graduated to come to the city ) would amass a fortune worth $2.69 billion over a little more than three decades.

In a 2013 Financial Post interview , Edwards said timing was a factor in his success, after he helped establish Peters & Co. Capital in 1988.

“When I started back in the late 1980s, there was less capital around, and so if there is less capital, there is less competition for deals, because capital was tougher to raise,” he told the Post’s Claudia Cattaneo.

“The majors were stepping back from Western Canada, so there was a vacuum for companies to grow up and I was fortunate to fit into that vacuum.”

From his start in the business world with Peters & Co., Edwards has since become best known as the chairman of Canadian Natural Resources, which reported nearly $18.9 billion in revenue in 2014. He’s involved with several other companies in the energy sector and beyond and is also part of the Calgary Flames ownership group.

In 2015, Canadian Business named Edwards Canada’s 30th richest person, with a net worth of $2.69 billion — in the magazine’s 1999 listing he ranked 62nd, with a $380 million net worth.

Of course, while the world of Calgary business has been good to him, Edwards has made a point of giving back to the community, becoming one of Calgary’s most noteworthy philanthropists.

Edwards has supported numerous initiatives and organizations around the city. He’s also given back to his province of birth, donating millions to the University of Saskatchewan, which renamed its business school the N. Murray Edwards School of Business.

While he might have traded rustic luxury in the foothills for a swanky new address in London, there are undoubtedly a number of ties to Canada that will keep Edwards combing back to Calgary. Here are a few of them:

OIL : While the downturn has taken a huge bite out of Edwards’ fortune — he reportedly saw a decline of nearly $500 million from last year thanks to the fall in the price of oil and the value of the companies he owns — the vast majority of his wealth still comes from his publicly reported holdings in companies like CNRL, Magellan, Ensign Energy and Imperial Metals. 3. STAMPEDE : Edwards is known to frequent top corporate Stampede shindigs like law firm BD&P’s notoriously well-lubricated annual client party. While the tenor of recent celebrations has been subdued thank to the downturn, raucous corporate parties will undoubtedly sing their siren song again once when boom times return.

4. THE ROCKIES: Edwards owns Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR) — a company that he saved from bankruptcy and which is now the largest private ski report operator in North America. Who can resist champagne powder in the rockies and the relative calm of the lineups compared to European ski resorts?

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.

Food is very expensive,very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

The luxurious atmosphere of this place, the view and the location make it quite outstanding. We had dinner here with friends and the dishes were amazing, accompanied by a chilled bottle of Chablis, it really made me feel as if it was a part of... the classic Russian movie. More
