Mercury Yacht Harbour about to lose its Force 4 Chandlery?

Anyone who keeps their boat at Mercury Yacht Harbour I am sure will value greatly our little Force 4 Chandlery, it may be the runt of the litter compared to the Force 4 in Hamble Point and Port Hamble but it is still sooo useful. Manned most weekends by Ariel, the most knowledgeable of Force 4 shop staff you will ever come to meet. (seems to commute between an Italian superyacht that he maintains in Italy and Force 4 in Mercury.... go figure?>!) .. he will get you any part you need, or point you in the right direction. Often to be found on board people boats giving assistance and tips, so as well as losing the chandlery we will lose Ariel. Stock is being run down, the shop appears to be on its way out. I have posted a comment on the Community page of Mercury Yacht Harbour Facebook page and according to MDL they are still in discussions with Force 4. So I would just ask if you keep your boat at Mercury and want an on site chandlery rather than an empty shop and have a few minutes please either comment on their Facebook page, or email the team at Mercury <[email protected]>, or write an old fashioned letter! As I see it that shop is a resource and benefit to the marina residents, not to have an on site chandlery is a pain in the neck... I've experienced that at Hythe, its not good.

That is a shame, I'm new to boating but Mercury Yacht Harbour is my local launch site. Only met Ariel once when I needed stern gear oil, Ariel closed the shop, came down to our boat in the marina, checked the engine to see exactly what I needed, took photo's of engine number, whet back to shop to search the internet for exact oil we needed. I was amazed at the level of customer service he provided. Ariel will be missed and the Chandlery will be missed too.

Would be a shame if it were to close We are regular users of both the Bristol and Portishead stores, I like dealing with F4

From a business perspective, F4 have a lot of stores, real estate and people to pay for, at a time when us keyboard warriors use t’internet to purchase. Where I am on the Hamble they have stores either side of the A27 bridge. How can this be economically effective? We all bemoan the loss of a great service, but it must be an easy business decision to close stores when you have so many in a small area.

The issue at Mercury is that its just a boat park, there so little training/charter/boat mending etc that the chandlery has so little trade.

Firefly625 said: Well actually there is Universal boat charters and Hamble sea school plus quite a few training boats used almost daily all year round that run out of Mercury, and Sea View charters normally get their boats lifted at Mercury.. and the rest of the folk that use it as a boat park all need a chandlery. MDL Mercury Yacht Harbour

mercury yacht harbour chandlery

Mercury Yacht Harbour is set in a sheltered wooded site where the shallow waters of Badnam Creek join the River Hamble. Originally built by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the marina offers berthing for 360 boats and enjoys deep water at all states of tide. Among its excellent facilities are a well-stocked chandlery as well as a bar and restaurant with waterfront views.

The marina is just a 20-minute walk from Hamble village. It is a scenic, peaceful spot, which still provides easy access to Southampton Water and the Solent. There are plenty of other tranquil anchorages to visit, such as Newtown Creek on the Isle of Wight or the pretty Beaulieu River.

Mercury yacht harbour.

Mercury Yacht Harbour is situated two miles from the mouth of the River Hamble where it is protected from the prevailing winds. Its tranquil rural setting makes this marina particularly popular with cruising families and those who enjoy a more gentle pace of boating. The marina has access to Southampton Water at all states of the tide. The sheltered waters of the Isle of Wight, with its bays, beaches, creeks, harbours and marinas, make this an ideal location for sailing of all kinds.

For those using SatNavs, the postcode for Mercury Yacht Harbour  is SO31 4HQ

Otherwise, if coming by car, take the M27 motorway to junction 8, then follow signs to Hamble, going due SW up a short dual carriageway up a hill to a big roundabout, take the second exit A3025 past the Tesco superstore, over two mini roundabouts and one set of traffic lights, still going due South towards Hamble. After a plant nursery on the left take the first exit at the next roundabout, then immediately left into Satchell Lane about 50 yards past the roundabout.  Over a railway bridge and round several sharp bends, after about 1/2 mile look out for a left turn signposted Mercury Yacht Harbour, next to a holiday caravan site. Go down a short narrow rough road for about 200 yards and turn right through large wire gates into the large free car park. Close to the river on the corner of the main building is the harbourmaster’s office, with luggage trolleys nearby.   Ask in the MDL Marinas office for the location of Sea Essay’s berth.

As visitors are accommodated on the berths of absent resident berth-holders it is advisable to make contact in advance of any intended stay. The marina's pontoons are exposed to very strong tidal currents so a great measure of care is required to deal with the cross currents when passing in between the marina’s pontoon heads. Newcomers are advised to only approach at slack water.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
