Seaexplorer (formerly Malizia II): a 0% emission, 100% innovation yacht

Home Environment Seaexplorer (formerly Malizia II): a 0% emission, 100% innovation yacht

The Seaexplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco (formerly the Malizia II ) has finished in the top five of the Vendée Globe 2020. It is the same vessel on which Greta Thunberg crossed the Atlantic in summer 2019.

Eighty days at sea, alone, with no stops and no assistance. This is what skipper Boris Herrmann achieved on board the iconic yacht from the  Yacht Club de Monaco and Team Malizia : the Seaexplorer. Competing in the Vendée Globe for the first time, the German skipper completed his circumnavigation of the planet in fifth position, following an exceptional race. He only just missed out on a podium position after hitting a boat 90 miles from the finish line.

Boris Herrmann also took advantage of the Vendée Globe 2020, which was won by Yannick Bestaven, to carry out a scientific mission. On board his IMOCA 60, an automated laboratory gathered data on the temperature, salinity, pH and CO 2 levels in the oceans 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These measurements were sent to the international scientific community to help improve understanding of the mechanisms by which water absorbs carbon. In partnership with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO), Boris also deployed an Argo profiling float off the coast of Iceland.

The Malizia II was rechristened the Seaexplorer, a reference to the smart digital platform of the same name developed by the Kuehne + Nagel group, which supplies information about CO 2 emissions in the maritime freight sector.

“Going beyond sport, Team Malizia II also has a certain ‘philosophy of the sea’, particularly with respect to its environmental commitment. This is a cause which has always been very close to my heart. It’s hugely important. It is critical to raise awareness as much as possible, especially among children who are our future,” said Pierre Casiraghi, Vice-President of the Yacht Club de Monaco and founder of Team Malizia.

He has also launched an educational programme to engage children from all over the world on the issue of climate change and the ocean, with support from the Prince Albert II Foundation and Kuehne + Nagel.

In August 2019, the Malizia II enabled Greta Thunberg to cross the Atlantic to attend the United Nations Climate Summit with zero carbon emissions.

To cover the 3,000 nautical miles between the United Kingdom and New York without emitting any carbon, this 18-metre yacht did not use its combustion engine at any point during the voyage. The yacht is equipped with a solar power system and two hydro-generators which produce electricity.

“These two energy sources mean that we can operate all of the systems and electronics on board continuously, including the navigation instruments, automatic controls, desalination system and our ocean laboratory,” explained Pierre Casiraghi and Boris Herrmann.

MALIZIA – SEAEXPLORER

The new “MALIZIA – SEAEXPLORER”, with which Boris Herrmann will be competing in races in the next years, incorporates data and insight gleaned from the previous model and applies them in a new design. As the Official Technical Partner we are proud to have contributed our decades of expertise to the design and construction of this racing yacht. For example, we were responsible for the production of the entire deck mould, and our expertise and engineering services also flowed into the further development and construction of the foils, which give the boat its incredible speed. Key structural parts were also made from our CORMASTER ® material, which we provided to the shipyard as the official supplier. The new boat is in the direct tradition of our own successful “CONTAINER” racing yachts.   Thanks to the modern sandwich construction of the hull, the yacht can withstand the extreme forces and weather conditions out on the ocean during circumnavigation, despite its low weight. The yacht is equipped with solar panels and mobile hydro generators which provide energy on board.

HIGH PERFORMANCE YACHT WITH CORMASTER ®

The foils develop an upward force of fifty to sixty kN and can lift almost the entire hull out of the water, thus reducing frictional resistance with the water to a minimum. Top speeds of more than 30 knots can already be achieved at 25 knots wind speed, making the boat one of the fastest in its class.

Malizia-Seaexplorer set to conquer Atlantic in Transat Jacques Vabre

Malizia-Seaexplorer set to conquer Atlantic in Transat Jacques Vabre

After days of uncertainty due to very difficult weather conditions, the IMOCA fleet finally left Paul Vatine basin to take the start of the 16th Transat Jacques Vabre, the Monaco Yacht Club reports.

It was at 09:30 on November 7 that Malizia-Seaexplorer, the latest addition to Team Malizia founded by Yacht Club de Monaco Vice-President Pierre Casiraghi, crossed the start of this double-handed race. Led by German skipper Boris Herrmann and co-skipper Will Harris, the 60-footer is on course to Fort-de-France in Martinique with 39 other IMOCAs.

The six Ocean Fifty and 44 Class40 boats started last Sunday October 29 as planned with the five Ultims and had to stop in Lorient while Storm Ciarán went through. According to the race organisers it had been impossible to find a harbour for all the IMOCAs hence the delay in Le Havre.

Makes it three for Boris Herrmann

The German skipper and Yacht Club de Monaco member knows this event well having competed in 2017 and 2019 and returns to the coffee route on a brand new boat. After leaving the yard in July 2022, Malizia-Seaexplorer has already had a taste of offshore racing after the solo Route du Rhum in 2022 and then The Ocean Race, a 32,000nm round the world with stages and crew when they came an excellent third. At his side is Will Harris as co-skipper. It’s the second time the two have paired up, the first being in 2019.

Weather systems a game changer

Organisers have had to revise the route, not just shorten it but also to avoid more depressions. After exiting the Channel, they head to Fort de France leaving the Azores to starboard. The 3,765nm looks set to be tactical and rough as from Wednesday 8th November a front awaits them with 30 knots of wind, gusting 35-to 40.

“I can’t wait,” said Boris Herrmann. “We’ve had a week’s postponement when I waited out the storm with my family in Hamburg. The boat was safely moored in Le Havre and the team took good care of it. The shorter course is a good idea as I need time to take part in the solo return race straight after the Transat”. For the German skipper, the objectives are the same as they were a week ago: “We will be going head to head with some new boats in the class that we will face in the Vendée Globe next year and are going to thoroughly test and fine-tune the boat in semi-single hander race mode”.

A crossing for the environment

“We will be using the Ocean Pack, as we’ve done every race, to collect ocean CO2 data for scientists,” explains Will Harris. “Some sections of the race will be similar to those sailed in The Ocean Race earlier this year, I am curious to see what scientists will observe on a more seasonal level. We’re also going to try and collect environmental DNA samples using a filter system added to the Ocean Pack.

This race is an excellent opportunity to test the system and perfect it for future races. I am also excited to be deploying another drifting buoy, about 32°W, an area seriously lacking in data. This will be our third drifting buoy to be deployed in 2023, the first for me taking place in the 2019 Transat Jacques Vabre when I joined Malizia. It shows how united we are as a team to support marine research”.

Drifting buoys can measure sea surface temperature, atmospheric pressure and surface currents. From its remote position, the buoy frequently sends back highly accurate data updates to GTS (Global Telecommunications Systems), the World Meteorological Organization’s international data network. Forecasters and scientists the world over can access information from this platform for free. This deployment is part of Eumetnet’s European SurfMar programme coordinated by Météo France. And as Boris Herrmann explains “this global project will help scientists better understand the ocean and how natural and anthropomorphic changes affect it. It will also significantly improve weather forecasts and models which are an integral part of offshore racing”.

Strategy is key

Tactical choices will ratify forecasts with routing estimates to the North citing high pressure systems before hitting a second depression at the end of the week. Contestants have several options once they leave the Channel. The only obligation is to leave to starboard Santa Maria, the southernmost island in the Azores. ETA in Martinique for the leaders is expected on Friday November 17.

Sailing: Ocean Race, Yacht Club de Monaco returns to the legendary fully crewed offshore race with Malizia-Seaexplorer

MONACO, Jan. 16, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- At 4:10pm precisely on Sunday 15th January the gun fired for the start of The Ocean Race from Alicante, Spain, for the 5 IMOCA boats and 6 Volvo 65s including the 5 team members sailing on Malizia-Seaexplorer helmed by Boris Herrmann from Yacht Club de Monaco. The former Whitbread Round The World Race continues to thrill 50 years after it first launched. For the second time in its history, YCM is on the start of this crewed round the world in stages offshore race after Grant Dalton’s 2nd place in 1997-1998 on WOR 60 Merit Cup (MON 700).

For YCM’s Boris Herrmann it’s his first crack at this iconic race in his career. Aboard Malizia-Seaexplorer it will be a unique experience for the sailor and his crew comprising Will Harris(co-skipper), Rosalin Kuiper, Nicolas Lunven, Yann Eliès, Axelle Pillain and Antoine Auriol (on board reporter). Having left the yard last July, the brand new 60-footer already has a taste for offshore having competed in the Route du Rhum. “The sensations on this boat are completely different. It’s slightly heavier with a slight banana-shape to the hull that entails a different approach to navigation. It’s also higher which means more space inside and that improves quality of life for all on board,” says Pierre Casiraghi, YCM Vice-President and founder of Team Malizia. “The boat’s designed for the Vendée Globe, so solo sailing, but also with crew for The Ocean Race. It also has many more sensors and electronics. I think Boris and Team Malizia will do very well in this race. He has a lot of experience sailing all over the world with many different teams and boats, whether as crew on Maserati (MOD70) or racing with Francis Joyon on Idec (Ultime) among others.” After damage incurred during the recent Route du Rhum, the 60-footer was in the yard to have foils replaced: “We’re trying to work out exactly what happened but it’s not that unusual with such recent foils,” explains Boris Herrmann, “The team did an incredible job and turned the situation round in record time.” The crew on Malizia-Seaexplorer then return to Monaco in time for the 10th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge.

The technical set-back failed to put the brakes on the team’s ambitions as Malizia-Seaexplorer got off to a cracking start, winning the first In-Port race (Alicante) on 8th January a week before the start.

Launched 1973 and held every three years since 1988, it is the first time the high tech, foiling, nearly flying IMOCA boats will be competing. Nine stage cities are on the programme for the next six months. The first stage is a 1,900 nautical mile sprint to Cape Verde, a first stop that will allow competitors to focus on sustainability issues at the famous Ocean Week, a cause dear to the hearts of the crew on Malizia-Seaexplorer and the Yacht Club de Monaco.

Starting 25th January, Leg 2 sees the fleet head to Cape Town, South Africa, before setting sail again for a recordbreaking distance to Itajaí in Brazil. At 12,750 nautical miles, it’s the longest leg in the event’s history and takes the IMOCAs and VO65s into the Roaring Forties and Furious Fifties of the Southern Ocean. With the Antarctic to starboard, the fleet need to pass all three of the great southern capes – Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin and Cape Horn - to port and without stopping. From there they head north, through the doldrums again to Newport, Rhode Island, on the east coast of the United States, before returning to Europe with a transatlantic leg to Aarhus, Denmark, followed by a fly-by of Kiel, Germany, before a stop in The Hague in The Netherlands. Then it’s the Grand Finale leg to Genova, Italy, with first arrivals expected 1st July 2023.

Route du Rhum, Malizia II Off to a Super Start

route-du-rhum-malizia-ii-off-to-a-super-start

The Malizia II, the  Yacht Club de Monaco monohull helmed by Boris Herrmann, is currently in second place on the Route du Rhum.

Waking up to the fifth day of the Route du Rhum competition, we find the Yacht Club de Monaco’s very own Malizia II well-positioned in second place. First-time participant Boris Herrmann is navigating the one-man ship. The Yacht Club’s vice president and initiator of the Malizia II project, Pierre Casiraghi, had this to say about the ship’s progress:

Advertising For his first solo transatlantic race, Boris has made a very good start. He is fighting hard in extremely difficult conditions, hitting winds of up to 45 knots last night, causing a small breakage in the J3 level tack, which he managed to repair. The first three days were very selective. Many IMOCAs were forced to turn back; it is a real satisfaction that Malizia is holding on. Everything is fine on board, we are very proud of Boris. – YCM

Conditions: not for the faint of heart

The weather conditions Mr. Casiraghi is referring to are actually gusts reaching over 45 knots with 5 to 10-meter troughs along the watery passage to Guadeloupe. Among the 124 boats in all classes participating in the race, bad weather has already caused several breakages. Because Herrmann opted for a route that was higher north, he may have avoided some of these troubles. The current IMOCA class leader, British sailor Alex Thomson of Team Hugo Boss equally sailed higher north.

There remain a little over 2,500 nautical miles for the Monégasque ship to travel before reaching its destination in Point-à-Pitre. Other trials lie ahead such as the approaching trade winds, and of course competition from the likes of Vincent Riou (PRB), Paul Meilhat (SMA), Stéphane le Diraison (Time for Oceans), and Yann Eliès (UCAR-Saint-Michel).

A dual mission

Beyond finishing the Route du Rhum, Malizia-II also carries the mission of promoting ocean protection. The Malizia My Ocean Challenge is a scientific project to measure the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO 2 ) around the globe within the next 4 years.

The Malizia II has been fitted with a special sensor allowing for the measurements to be taken in real-time while the boat participates in various races around the world. Schools in Germany and France are following the boat’s progress closely, inspiring interest in the scientific study of the ocean floor.

At the time of this article, Herrmann currently trails Thomson by 55 nautical miles.

Malizia II to compete in Transat Jacques Vabre first time for a Monegasque boat

After his 3 rd  place in the Rolex Fastnet Race, Pierre Casiraghi decided to enter the IMOCA 60’  Malizia II – Yacht Club de Monaco  for the 13 th  Transat Jacques Vabre. Known for being very demanding, the biennial race for double-handers leaves Le Havre on 5 th  November 2017.

First time for a Monegasque boat

Supervised by Pierre Casiraghi and led by German sailor Boris Herrmann, it will be the first time a boat flying the Yacht Club de Monaco’s colours will be on the Route du Café. “ In line with our Club’s sailing policy as well as preparation for the Vendée Globe, it seems important to me that the Yacht Club de Monaco’s offshore flagship  Malizia II  is able to compete in internationally renowned events to inspire our young sailors to dream big and get them considering new vocations ,” comments YCM Vice-President Pierre Casiraghi who has chosen Frenchman Thomas Ruyant to complete the team.

With three Transat Jacques Vabre under his belt, including 4 th  in 2015, and the last Vendée Globe on  Souffle du Nord pour le Projet Imagine,  the Dunkirk sailor is an experienced ocean racer.

Malizia  Team – up for any challenge

“With this young team, our ambition is to be there on the start of the most prestigious races, be it GC32 regattas or offshore races on the IMOCA 60’. Both are high performance foiling boats which epitomise modern sailing,”  adds Pierre Casiraghi.

A reminder that the  Malizia  adventure started in 2016 on his initiative on the GC32 Racing Tour, a new generation of foiling catamarans, and continues on the IMOCA 60’ which arrived in June 2017.

Malizia  symbolises the Grimaldi family’s attachment to the sea, a tribute to Francesco Grimaldi “The Cunning One” ( La Malizia  in Monegasque), a Genovese who arrived by sea in 1297 and established the Grimaldi dynasty. For the Monegasque skipper, there’s an emotional aspect to the choice: “ I always wanted to give this name to a race boat for what Malizia represents for us in the Principality .”

Malizia II to compete in Transat Jacques Vabre

Engaged alongside Pierre Casiraghi on his many sailing projects, Boris Herrmann has been there from the start. “ Since  Malizia II  joined the Yacht Club de Monaco’s fleet, we have covered nearly 12,000 nautical miles. The Rolex Fastnet Race, our first official regatta, was a great test over a short distance. The Transat Jacques Vabre is one of the longest and renowned for being particularly challenging both for boats and sailors. As Pierre is not able to be on board, although he will be accompanying us as we prepare the boat and I’d like to thank him for his confidence and support, I am teaming up with Thomas Ruyant. He’s an all-round sailor for whom I have profound respect and admiration. We know each other well. We were sailing together on the IMOCA  Neutrogena . This year we will probably be the pair that have done the most miles together before the start. And we both have the same dream: to do the 2020 Vendée Globe ,” says Boris Herrmann who has already competed in three round the worlds including the Jules Verne Trophy and Barcelona World Race.

On the “Coffee Route”

The race starts at Le Havre (Seine-Maritime) Sunday 5 th  November 2017, on a route inspired by the historic itinerary the clippers took when bringing Brazilian coffee to France. On the programme: 4,350 nautical miles ending in Salvador de Bahia in Brazil. Thirteen IMOCA 60s are expected on the start. Transat Jacques Vabre organisers are holding a press conference in Paris tomorrow.

Malizia II-Yacht Club de Monaco returns to competition

malizia yacht club de monaco

After four months in the yard for nearly 5,000 hours of winter maintenance, the Principality of Monaco’s IMOCA 60’ racing yacht, Malizia II-Yacht Club de Monaco, is back on the race circuit for the season with Boris Herrmann at the helm.

malizia yacht club de monaco

A packed programme lies ahead in 2019 with three IMOCA Globe Series events (Bermudes 1000 Race, Rolex Fastnet Race and Transat Jacques Vabre) as well as the Rolex Giraglia and Défi Azimut.

Along with Boris Herrmann, 16 other sailors representing six nationalities are set to take the start of the Bermudes 1000 Race, a qualifier for the 2020 Vendée Globe and the only solo event of the year.

A battle over a distance of 2,000 miles from Douarnenez to Brest, via the iconic Fastnet lighthouse (Irish Sea) and a waypoint off the Azores, the race should take around a week.

Initially set to start on the Wednesday, it was postponed to 5.00pm on Thursday 9th May. The decision was taken by the Race Directors due to adverse weather conditions.

Currently lying 4th in the new IMOCA Globe Series World Championship after clinching 5th place in the Route du Rhum, the Yacht Club de Monaco member intends to take full advantage of the Bermudes 1000 Race to ramp up the miles.

A good result could even propel him further up the championship rankings, given that three of the contestants in front of him in the provisional ranking (Paul Meilhat, Yann Eliès and Alex Thomson) will not be on the start.

“I have great expectations for this race, even though it is only my second big solo experience in the IMOCAs after the 2018 Route du Rhum,” says Boris, who has his sights set on being the first German to compete in the Vendée Globe in 2020. “We won’t see the new IMOCA fleet yet, but the Bermudes 1000 Race will be the first big test in 2019. I can see how I measure up against top competitors like Sam Davies, with her new foils, and Sébastien Simon, in his first solo outing in the IMOCA class.”

Yacht Club de Monaco: A new prize for the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge to encourage sustainable yachting

TURIN, Italy, April 18, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A new prize for the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge to reward innovative university projects. The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, an active Monaco Energy Boat Challenge partner, is adding another dimension to the partnership in launching the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Sustainable Yachting Technology Award. The contest is open to universities anywhere in the world and on 6th July will reward the best technological solution that is applicable to yachting in terms of energy efficiency and/or carbon reduction. "We are pleased to initiate this prize to help finance the development of a university's department with a grant of 25,000 euros. We hope to encourage the winner to go further with its applied research and who knows maybe help those prototypes progress towards a more industrial solution", explains Olivier Wenden, Vice-President of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. Once the grant has been awarded, the winner will be able to present progress on their project at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge for three years starting in 2025. The prize was officially announced at the Monaco Ocean Week, that was attended by explorers Mike Horn and Bertrand Piccard.

Under the aegis of the collective Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting approach and organised by YCM, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge brings maritime industry pioneers together with visionary engineers around a common goal: to promote alternative propulsion and sustainability in the yachting sector. On the programme, a unique convergence of boats already on or about to enter the market and innovative prototypes. "Every year, students surpass themselves. They are an amazing source of ideas. It is fascinating to see their potential and we are happy to put them in contact with industry players who are a great support for these young engineers," says YCM General Secretary Bernard d'Alessandri.

Entrants to the Solar Class have just confirmed their presence at the 11th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, with 15 teams and 13 nations set to go head to head in this historic category that has supported the event since its launch in 2014. A few weeks before, contestants in the Energy Class finalised their registrations, representing 20 renowned universities. Among these prestigious institutions is the University of Cambridge, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, the Politecnico di Milano and Technical University of Berlin to name a few, with 14 nations represented including Canada, Croatia, Peru, Chile and China. All have a chance to meet well-known shipyards like Monaco Marine, Oceanco, Ferretti Group and Sanlorenzo. Perceived by many as one of the key new power sources in the energy transition to a cleaner more sustainable future, hydrogen ticks the boxes of a range of energy needs. As an energy carrier, hydrogen offers a promising alternative to fossil fuels as it can be produced from renewable sources like solar and wind or via the natural gas decarbonisation process. Several contestants have opted for this solution. Of the 21 teams in the Energy Class using electric propulsion, nearly 50% of projects (ten) will be presenting hybrid technologies based on hydrogen, while the other 11 are choosing to store 100% of the energy in Lithium-Ion batteries. Note that during the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge in 2019, the Yacht Club de Monaco and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation also co-launched the Monaco Hydrogen Working Group. Thanks to the success of this Working Group's conference, the Monaco Energy Transition has been co-organiser for the last three years.
