AI Reviewed a Record — We Had Some Notes

By Jon Dolan

Here at Rolling Stone, we’re always looking for new music reviewers, young hot shots fresh off the street who are ready to blow us away with their innovative style and fresh insights. We also have a soft spot for terrible ideas. So we figured hiring a supersmart robot to write record reviews was a no-brainer. We asked Bing’s chatbot to write a “ Rolling Stone review of Lil Yachty ’s album Let’s Start Here. ” We used Bing because it has access to the current web, whereas ChatGPT does not. We wanted Bing to feel at home, and since Let’s Start Here has an AI-generated cover, we felt it was a nice fit. Below is Bing’s draft with our edit notes. It should go without saying that onboarding any new hire is never a seamless process, and judging by Bing’s copy, it doesn’t look like our human writers need to get any more existentially freaked out about their place in the world than they already are.

Lil Yachty, Let’s Start Here

RS Editor: OK, here’s a classic rookie mistake. We call it “assuming too much knowledge.” Phrases like “viral pop” and “Detroit rap” could use some explanation. The ideal RS reader is a music fan with an interest in all genres, but not someone who’s up on every bit of new jargon. Take a step back and explain these terms. Also, these terms seem pretty vague and kind of incoherent, like they were coughed up somewhat at random with some last-minute Googling. It feels frantic and insecure, but also kind of empty, like you’re trying to prove how up-to-date you are without totally knowing what you’re talking about.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Sorry, but that’s a bit of a cliché pile-up — ”sonic journey that defies expectations and genres” is a phrase that could apply to literally thousands of albums. Every phrase you use should be specific to THIS album. That shouldn’t be hard with Let’s Start Here. But before we even get to that, we need to be more expansive about what his music has been like in the past. It’s good to set the stakes for this release by exploring his previous work more fully.

It’s a bold statement of intent, a declaration of creative freedom and ambition. Yachty collaborates with an eclectic array of musicians, from indie-rockers MGMT and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker to R&B singers Fousheé and Diana Gordon to jazz legend Herbie Hancock. He also enlists producers Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson and Patrick Wimberly, who help craft the album’s rich and diverse soundscapes.

The album opens with “the BLACK seminole.,” a sprawling epic that references the history of Afro-Seminole people in Florida and features a guitar solo by Parker. It sets the tone for the rest of the album, which explores themes of identity, self-discovery, and transformation.

And a lot more! For me, the synthetic, distractedly trippy tone of the music mixed with Yachty’s horndog-Cylon singing seems to circle around the idea of trying to make sense of your desires and emotions in a technologically mediated era. There’s freedom in this music, but it’s tinged with a certain amount of dread. That’s just one possible way in. You might choose another. But I’d generally like to see you go deeper. Despite the LP’s intentionally tossed-off feel, Yachty is dealing with some pretty serious stuff here. For instance, the album cover was generated by AI and shows a kind of demented board of directors. I feel like you’d be uniquely qualified to explore that image. And yet you don’t mention the LP cover at all. It’s weird, almost like you’re avoiding the issue. It’s creepy.

Yachty sings more than he raps, often using his voice as an instrument to convey emotion and melody. He experiments with different styles and influences, from the funk-infused “running out of time” to the synth-pop anthem “sAy sOMETHINg” to the prog-rock finale “REACH THE SUNSHINE.”

That’s pretty flat and far too general. Let’s go deeper!

Let’s Start Here is not an album for everyone.

We don’t indulge in this kind of marketing conjecture in our reviews — it’s not our job to say who will like this record, it’s our job to engagingly explain what we think of it and why.

Why Is Everybody Talking About the Hawk Tuah Girl?

After a near-fatal crash, xavi is seizing this moment, shifty shellshock, frontman of crazy town, dead at 49, tana mongeau opens up about alleged underage hookup with youtuber cody ko.

OK, Bing. Look, I know all my notes here will be a lot to process. I don’t want you to feel discouraged. And I do want to thank you for filing such clean copy so fast. It’s really great to be able to assign a review at 8:30:21 a.m. and have it back in at 8:30:28 a.m. This is solid work, especially for a first assignment. That said, we definitely have a lot to do to get this piece where it needs to be. You seem to have a general sense of the basics of what a review should be. The piece has a generally authoritative tone. But as my notes above suggest, I do feel like the review could go a little deeper. For instance, in the RS review of Yachty’s 2017 album, Teenage Emotions , our human critic Christopher R. Weingarten cleverly argued that the music had the “giddy, childlike, organic, occasionally broken feel of Eighties twee-centric bands like Beat Happening, Television Personalities, and Half Japanese.” Kind of makes you want to hear Yachty, and check out Half Japanese too, right? (BTW, are you a fan? 1/2 Gentlemen/Not Beasts is a total classic in my book.)

In any case, I’m sure we can get this done and come up with a great review! Right now, it’s 9:02:34 a.m. Can you get me a revise by 9:02:42? Thanks.

It’s Us Vol. 1

Concrete Boys Its Us Vol. 1

By Alphonse Pierre

Concrete Rekordz / Quality Control

April 15, 2024

First, Lil Yachty spent a year doing so-so Michigan rapper cosplay. Then he moved on to his Tame Impala wannabe vanity project . Now, his next racket is a rap crew. That group is Concrete Boys , a five-member collective that, with Yachty as their frontman, includes the rappers Camo!, Draft Day, Karrahbooo , and Dc2trill (the latter is from Texas, and the only one of the five without any ties to Atlanta). In the last few months, the clique has formally introduced themselves with a string of pretty music videos, a viral On the Radar freestyle, and color-coordinated photo shoots . All of these efforts have led up to their debut compilation album It’s Us Vol. 1 , where they seem to be presenting themselves as a modern-day version of the kind of rap crews who would have had a spread in a mid-’90s issue of The Source . That homage is loose and mostly sartorial instead of musical: On the album cover, the five are dressed in vintage Polo Sport and Tommy Hilfiger, Timberland boots, and jean shorts—outfits that make them look like they’re extras in Hulu’s Wu-Tang: An American Saga .

It’s Us Vol. 1 has much less of an identity than Concrete Boys’ fit pics. Their thing is that they’re cool, I guess. That wouldn’t be a problem if the music itself oozed cool. The album just doesn’t do that. In fact, the main appeal is that it’s an innocuous, easy-listening collection of songs—perfect to throw on in the background while you chat with your friends or pass time on your commute. Like Drake , Yachty has become an expert at dissecting and shaving the rough edges off regional and internet sounds. Here, he’s streamlined the highly collaborative, shit-talking spirit he picked up in Michigan, giving that style a neater, smoother, and more widely accessible sheen (If you’ve wished for music with the structure of Michigan rap, but with less chaos, then this is for you). For instance, the tape is heavy on punchline-based rhyming, but the bars are fairly tame and only mildly clever. And there are a decent number of beats that bring to mind the chill bounce of Detroit producer Topside ’s instrumentals for Baby Smoove and Babyface Ray , except they’re not as funky (see: “Playa Walkin”). One way or another, it’s hard to get worked up about this music.

Each member of Concrete Boys has their moments. Draft Day has the most memorable voice of the crew, like he’s rapping with strep throat. It’s best in spurts, but when he pops back in on “2 Hands 2 Eyes 10 Whips/Rent Due” for a second verse after a hardened beat switch-up, his strained vocals reach Lil Wop levels, which gives the song an energy boost. Camo! is the most anonymous of the bunch—not sure what’s going on with that Jersey club flip of Pinegrove he sings over on the intro—but he can sometimes drift into a Lil Wayne -influenced zone of wisecracks. “Put my fingers inside her holes, I’m tryna bowl you,” he spits on “Hit Diff.” That’s about as funny as he gets. Dc2trill is the clique’s smooth-talker; he’s decent at it, gliding with a Curren$y -like ease on the jazzy “My Life.” Yachty is pretty much on autopilot, but he seems to have a good time when he raps with Karrahbooo. Surprisingly, her bored, deadpan flow on highlights like “Where Yo Daddy?” and “Not Da 2” has a way of making pretty simple flexes and quips stick.

It’s Us Vol. 1 mostly works as a launchpad for Karrahbooo; she’s the only one of the bunch who will leave you wanting to hear a solo mixtape. The video for their On the Radar cypher—the recording of which is included on the tape—is a solid glimpse at that potential. For four and a half minutes, the boys spit inoffensive and fine-enough verses that eventually blend together over a hypnotic, naked sax sample. It’s all build-up for the final minute, where the song really comes alive. There, Karrahbooo takes the floor, as the skittering Michigan drums kick in and her unbothered, sleepwalking flow elevates a show-offy trip down memory lane: “I was sellin’ lemonade while y’all would double dutch/I used to scam, I used to trap, I never cuddled much.” In that minute, you almost forget anything that came before her verse—aside from the fact that the guys had on nice outfits.

Lil Yachty & James Blake Talk Joint Album "Bad Cameo" With Zane Lowe

Screenshot 2024-06-25 at 12.54.31 PM

Some collaborations often catch fans off guard, and Lil Yachty and James Blake's upcoming joint album, Bad Cameo , can fall into that category. Yet, it hasn't been uncommon for Blake to partner with Hip Hop artists throughout his prolific career. He has worked with artists like Kendrick Lamar , Beyoncé, Vince Staples , Chance The Rapper , and Frank Ocean , and was featured on the Black Panther soundtrack. Yachty's catalog of hits speaks for itself, and these two decided to band their skills together for what they hope is an unforgettable project that both say inspired their best songwriting.

"As soon as we started making songs, and I think partly it was to do with this conversation we had pretty early on where Yachty was like, 'James, you've made enough,'" Blake told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1. "'You've worked on enough Rap records. Let's make something completely different.' And I was like, 'Totally, what do you feel like working on?' And I just started playing him….it's not that I assumed we'd make a Rap vocal collab record. I just didn't know what he wanted to do."

"So when he said that, I was like, 'Great, obviously the door's open for any type of thing I'm going to play him," Blake added. "So, I just started playing him ambient things. Things I'd been working on actually from a similar era to the Robots ' era stuff. If you look around here, this is all just since that. I've made all that stuff on and I was playing him some stuff like that. Then, he had a couple of things that he brought in that kind of matched that mood."

Both Blake and Yachty expounded on Bad Cameo , detailing why they were drawn to work with one another in the first place. Read through a few highlights below, including lessons Yachty learned from Blake and why Blake almost swore off collaborations altogether before this partnership arose. Additionally, make sure to stream Bad Cameo when it arrives this Friday, June 28.

James Blake On Why He Wanted To Work With Lil Yachty

The thing that I think it was for me—because I already respected you as an artist in the genre you started in. To me, the music you were making already was amazing. And I think lyrically you stood out energetically. You stood out, and I just felt like every time your voice came on something, it was like, oh, I just knew there was going to be a level of quality to it. I also got a sense early on that some of the kinds of genre associations and the kinds of ways that some people felt about that genre were reflecting on you unfairly. And I could see that there was someone unbelievably special who just happened to make this kind of music. And it's also music that I love.

Lil Yachty On What He Learned From Working With James Blake

View this post on Instagram A post shared by James Blake (@jamesblake)

Lil Yachty : I think I have a better understanding of quality and I feel like he pushed me to—he didn't push me physically. Like, told me, 'Do better.' But just being around and experiencing him work pushed me to try to have reason in my songwriting and to just live up to the quality of James’s catalog. I didn't want to put a project out and then his fans be upset with me. Kind of slaughtering all of the—

James Blake : That could never happen.

Zane Lowe :  No, but I do understand what you're saying. Pushing yourself to connect to the music in a way where—

Yachty : Just to be as great as everything that he has done. No, seriously, I wanted to make sure he knew how serious I was. Because I, myself, have worked with so many artists who are just so unserious. They don't understand true effort or just don't apply themselves. It's so easy to say, 'Yeah, man, let's make a project, man, let's work. Let's do an album. Let's do a mixtape.' But to genuinely apply yourself, show up, and devote time because it's my time and his time that we spent to create this child. [I] just really wanted to show that I was there and this was as important to me as it was to him.

Lowe : It says less about the value it creates after the fact and more with actually just being completely present in the process.

Yachty :  Well, we just never once had a conversation about what happens after. It was always just what we liked and what we felt was right. We never was like, 'Oh man, we going to go number one, or...' We never had that conversation. It's just like we went with it.

Blake : We knew that wasn't going to happen because I'm involved. But we definitely had conversations about the ideas of the—

Lowe : The British humility at play here.

Yachty : Well, I think he's going to possibly help me get my Grammy.

James Blake Swore Off Any More Collabs Before Working With Yachty

View this post on Instagram A post shared by CONCRETE BOY BOAT^ (@lilyachty)

Blake :  I'd say before even before we even met, I decided not to do many more collaborations.

Lowe :  What was the purpose behind it? What was the thinking?

Blake : Well, my thinking was in most sessions, I don't enjoy it that much. I think, there's a lot of great artists, but are they going to make you laugh? Are you going to actually have a good time? Are you actually going to form a friendship that is like, you actually want to see them come into the studio? I mean, there's a certain point in your career where you're like, 'Well, I don't have to do this.' I'm not trying to cross-pollinate fan bases and get—there's no A&R moves anymore. I'm just making music. Not that there really ever was, but now I'm like, 'How can I preserve my space? How can I be only have fun?' And we just, I mean, our sessions are 99 percent unserious. This is probably the most serious conversation we've ever had, I think.

A review of Lil Yachty's new song ‘Lil Mega Minion' from the Despicable Me 4 Soundtrack

I t appears that as part of Universal Picture's "Despicable Me 4" rollout, the production company has teamed up with rapper Lil Yachty and director Cole Bennett, from Lyrical Lemonade, in distributing the second single for the movie's soundtrack titled Lil Mega Minion .

Although it's yet to be confirmed if Lil Mega Minion will be previewed during the film, the song's direction and visuals bear a striking resemblance to Yeat's 2022 single Rich Minion, which was used in the Lyrical Lemonade directed trailer for the movie "Minions: The Rise of Gru".

Yachty announced the release of the song with a post made on his official Instagram handle. The rapper dedicated this post to Cole Bennett and Despicable Me's animation studio, Illumination Entertainment, by sharing his appreciation for being able to work together on this project.

"New song out for the minions movie. This is special." - Yachty captioned his Instagram post.

Lil Yachty's Lil Mega Minion follows up on Pharrell Williams' lead single for the film titled Double Life, which was released on June 14, 2024, marking his second collaboration with the production company.

Pharrell famously worked with Universal for "Despicable Me 2," during which he distributed his now 11-time platinum single Happy .

Breaking down Lil Yachty's latest single 'Lil Mega Minion'

Lil Yachty works alongside producer, LOTTO, to deliver Lil Mega Minion as the second single for Universal's upcoming motion picture "Despicable Me 4". Cole Bennett directs a visually pleasing music video featuring a guest appearance from Apple Music 1's Zane Lowe , playing the director of "Lyrical Lemonade Records".

The video starts with Zane discussing the sonic direction of Lil Mega Minion with five minions from the film, seated in his office before Bennett suggests featuring Lil Yachty on the track. The minions proceed to get violently excited and jump out the window, hoping to track down the rapper.

Yachty's record has a complete runtime of 1:51 minutes and was uploaded to all streaming platforms on 24 June 2024 via Illumination Entertainment, Back Lot Music, and Universal Studios Music LLLP.

The cover art recreates a scene from the music video where the minions manage to track down Yachty and unintentionally knock him out. Some of the major themes the rapper delves into on Lil Mega Minion are listed below:

  • Brotherhood
  • Relationships

Disclaimer: This review is rated explicit. Reader's discretion is advised.

"Hey, hey / Hey, hey / Hey / Hey"

Yachty opens with a simple intro delivered over a melodic trap production where he exclaims "Hey," several times while waving at the minions as he performs inside a recording booth.

"Jig is up, I'm back in town / You my lil' minion, you follow me around / I make you smile, ain't never tryna see you frown / I get deep in your mouth like a crown / I'ma lift the whole school off the ground / I'ma hit it O-T like, Wow"

Yachty floats over the trap production as he opens on the hook for Lil Mega Minion , where we see the rapper deliver lines expressing a sense of brotherhood and togetherness. The rapper points at one of the characters, suggesting a friendship-like bond, when calling them his "lil minion".

The chorus also finds Yachty highlighting an elevated status in Hip Hop, with lines that indicate that people look up to him and wish to follow in his footsteps.

"She do hashtags, TikToks / All the flashbacks look the same / My wrist watch, think it's time for it / It's time for it"

The chorus then blends into Yachty's first verse where the rapper begins to reference a love interest and her affinity for social media , while we hear the minions provide backing harmony tracks.

The music video mixes the vibey performance with chaotic visuals where we find movie characters floating in the air as well as a scene where one of the minions eats a Grammy award.

"Think it's time for it / Rockin' Tom Ford / Oh, that reminds me, you need to mind yours / Camp out with pine doors, log cabin in middle of the forest"

Yachty continues to flex his wealth and fashion style in the song, with lines that suggest he doesn't pay any heed to people who criticize him. This bar can be interpreted as Yachty expressing a disregard for luxury clothing while suggesting he wears Tom Ford when "camping" out in the forest.

"Maybach, reclining seats, treat me like I'm all yours / Wanna drop right into the chorus"

The verse ends with a single line where Lil Yachty flexes his Mayback before suggesting the song's hook should play one more time. Listeners are then drawn back into Lil Mega Minion's chorus before the rapper opens his second verse.

"I'll get with you in a minute / Any minute like spread / She's more and can't even see it / I think I'm in love with her legs, I can hear your voice through the text"

The final verse of this song is short and features a single bar from Yachty, where the rapper expresses his love for an unnamed woman. He highlights the strength of their intimate connection by suggesting that he can hear her voice "through the text".

The music video ends with Lil Yachty returning to his "Hey" intro, throwing up a peace sign, and dancing his way out of the studio.

Universal Picture's "Despicable Me 4" is scheduled to be released in all theatres across the United States on July 3, 2024. The movie's premise revolves around Gru, his family, and his newborn son dealing with a criminal, Maxime Le Mal, who vows to exact his revenge on the lead characters for being imprisoned.

The Minions Meet Lil Yachty in the Studio for "Lil Mega Minion"

Accompanied by a lyrical lemonade music video..

Everyone’s linking up with The Minions . After Pharrell unveiled his contribution – a track called “Double Life” – to Despicable Me 4 two weeks back, Lil Yachty is now hopping on the yellow-hued wave. The rapper recently shared his “Lil Mega Minion” single, which is slated to appear on the film’s soundtrack and comes complete with a Lyrical Lemonade music video – and it features appearances from Zane Lowe , Cole Bennett and, of course, Kevin, Bob and Stuart, who are posted up in the studio with Yachty.

“So tell me, what are you looking for in a theme song?” Lowe poses to the five minions who sit in his office.
