Triton Submarines and SHADOWCAT reveal 24m support catamaran

SHADOWLARK: Triton Submarines and SHADOWCAT reveal 24m support catamaran

Related articles.

SHADOWCAT has teamed up with submersible specialists Triton Submarines to present a 24 metre support catamaran named SHADOWLARK.

The concept springs from the boards of Australian naval architects Incat Crowther and is designed and engineered to launch and recover a three-person Triton 3300/3 MKII submersible via an A-frame crane. Purpose-built as a Launch and Recovery Craft (LARC), the SHADOWLARK is designed to ease the challenges that come with owning and operating a submersible.

The SHADOWLARK has a beam of 8.5 metres and spans three decks with a dive centre, lounge, galley, and a crew of four, as well as a pair of jet skis and a tender, also launched and recovered via the A-frame on the aft deck. The upper deck features a lounge area for guests to socialise while a hydraulic swim platform doubles as both a launch platform and dive board.

The support vessel has been designed as a flexible platform that can be operated independently or as support vessel to a private or charter yacht. Equally, it can serve as a shadow vessel for marine research expeditions or documentary filmmakers or even as a luxury on-the-water offering for an exclusive resort.

The SHADOWLARK, together with the Triton 3330/3 MKII, can be delivered in 14 months from signing the contract and is priced under $10,000,000.

For SHADOWCAT founder Robert Smith, the design is a scalable solution. “Because all SHADOWCAT vessels are fully bespoke, this highly capable concept can be constructed as-is or can serve as a starting point for a more customised option. We can enlarge SHADOWLARK to house bigger submarines or to make room for additional leisure and entertainment areas,” he said.

“Our goal is to make it possible for more people to own, operate and enjoy exploring the ocean from the comfort and safety of a Triton submersible,” said Patrick J. Lahey, president and co-founder of Triton Submarines. “Clients around the world can now enjoy the simplicity, elegance, excitement and safety of exploring the ocean in a Triton submersible supported by a craft that can be operated affordably, but with absolutely no compromises in terms of its capacity to do the job it was built for.”

Tour the World’s Most Luxurious Submarine Superyacht

By Dave Banks

If yacht owners really want to put everyone at port to shame, they should consider sailing on the Migaloo Private Submersible Yacht. A concept yacht created by Migaloo, an Austrian design and engineering firm, the line of luxury superyachts offers a range of bespoke underwater crafts that vary in size. After sailing the new Migaloo submersible yacht on the water, owners can close up the decks and turn the craft into a fully operational submarine.

“What we are attempting to do is to create a living space where exterior and interior interact in harmony,” says Christian Gumpold, managing director and head of design at Migaloo. With rooms that open to the ocean for dining alfresco while above water, and large viewing galleries for taking in the marine life when submersed, the Migaloo creates that harmony. What’s more, the firm reaffirms its focus on luxury with optional amenities that include helipads, swimming pools, movie theaters, elevators, wine cellars, libraries, and private terraces.

Of course, safety is a major focal point as well. Each superyacht will be built to U.S. Navy SUBSAFE safety standards, which ensure that the interiors will stay watertight and the vessel can recover from unanticipated flooding. According to Migaloo, solitude is a major point of interest for yacht owners, which is why the ability to dive beneath the surface and out of view might have great appeal. “Privacy is a big issue on superyachts,” says Gumpold, “our answer to this concern is simply submerging the vessel into complete privacy.”

Underwater Fun in New Submersibles

  • By Kim Kavin
  • September 21, 2022

If you’re feeling a bit disoriented, that’s perfectly normal. We haven’t quite reached the crossover point where Capt. Nemo’s sub Nautilus from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea becomes reality in the world of submersibles, but it sure does feel like we’re starting to get close.

Recent months have seen two of the world’s premier builders of submersibles— Triton Submarines in Florida and U-Boat Worx in the Netherlands—unveil submersible designs that can go deeper, hold more people and include more features than ever before. The new models are expanding everyone’s ideas about what is possible for undersea research, entertainment and just plain having fun while exploring underneath the yacht. Some of the designs look more like underwater laboratories or cruise ships than what we’ve come to expect from submarine launches in the recent past. Others are being purpose-built by owners with specific ideas about how they want to interact with the undersea environment.

The most surprising design is the Under Water Entertainment Platform, which U-Boat Worx unveiled in May. The UWEP can hold as many as 120 people in a 1,600-square-foot space, operating at depths of more than 650 feet, running nonstop for 24 hours. The platform is big enough to, say, create an underwater gym, casino or restaurant.

“The UWEP will shake up both the submarine and hospitality industry, and lead the way in bespoke underwater events,” U-Boat Worx CEO Bert Houtman says. “We will not only present a stellar experience for the most discerning clientele, but also a business opportunity that will benefit entrepreneurs and contribute to our understanding of the oceans.”

Contributing to our understanding of the oceans is also a driving force behind recent innovations at Triton Submarines, where the 7500/3 Aurelia began sea trials in May. It’s able to carry three passengers to depths of 7,500 feet and will be part of the research program aboard the 600-foot exploration vessel REV Ocean, joining that boat’s existing submersible, Aurora . Triton says that Aurelia is the world’s deepest-diving three-person acrylic submersible.

“With both Aurelia and Aurora now in service, we have the best tag team in the world for conducting cutting-edge ocean science, education and communications,” REV Ocean’s CEO Nina Jensen says.

Triton also announced in May that, following a pandemic delay, its DeepView 24 submersible is now open to the public ($60 per adult, $40 per child) for 30-minute dives in Vietnam, in what the company is calling the most significant commercial-tourism submersible launch of the past two decades. That sub can dive to more than 300 feet and will bring guests up close to shipwrecks, marine life and a “dive show.”

For yacht owners who might be thinking about adding similar experiences to their personal or charter programs, Triton also recently announced a partnership with Shadowcat to create a 78-foot catamaran support yacht that can carry a Triton 3330/3 submersible.

“Clients around the world can now enjoy the simplicity, elegance, excitement and safety of exploring the ocean in a Triton submersible supported by a craft that can be operated affordably, but with absolutely no compromises in terms of its capacity to do the job it was built for,” says Patrick J. Lahey, president of Triton Submarines.

At the same time, U-Boat Worx is pushing forward with its flagship Nexus series, which includes nine- and seven-person models. The Nexus can dive to more than 650 feet and, according to the company, has 25 percent more interior space than competing models. Lithium-ion batteries let the sub operate for as long as 18 hours, performing as many as 10 dives per day. For guest comfort during entry and exit, the Nexus has what U-Boat Worx says is the largest hatch ever incorporated into the design of a submersible this size.

“For passengers of all ages, the entire boarding process has been streamlined, in keeping with U-Boat Worx’s vision that everyone should be able to experience the oceans in a safe and comfortable manner,” the company stated when announcing the new model.

That’s quite an ambitious thought, given that it wasn’t until 2007 when the first submersible was carried aboard a yacht. It was a Triton 1000/2 aboard the 164-foot Trinity Mine Games , and it was heralded as a uniquely adventurous experience for anyone lucky enough to charter the yacht. Here we are, just 15 years later, talking about $60 rides for the general public and underwater promotional events for new products.

Will it really be that long before somebody decks out a sub similar to what Jules Verne described in 20,000 Leagues ? A common room that doubles as a museum can’t be too far off, filled with cases for the display of marine animals, shells and other finds.

Built for REV Ocean

The Triton 7500/3 was built for REV Ocean, a 600-foot vessel that’s used for research, exploration and charter. Aurelia , as this Triton 7500/3 is christened, is equipped with science sampling, storage, recording and filming equipment. It will be launched and recovered from the mothership with a 12-ton A-frame crane, which, in itself, is designed to be strong enough to lift the sub while its crew complement of three people is still on board.

A Sub By Any Other Name…

A public competition was held to decide the name of the new sub aboard REV Ocean. The winner was Ivar Ruijten of the Netherlands, who suggested Aurelia because it means gold or “the golden one” (from the Latin aurum ) and because Aurelia aurita is a common moon jellyfish that crew are likely to see through the sub’s glass.

Written by Zuzana Bednarova

65m undersea superyacht Phoenix 1000 is a personal luxury submarine built by US Submarines. Submarine yacht Phoenix 1000 is the single largest private undersea vehicle ever built, and probably one of the most important personal transportation devices of the century.

Phoenix 1000 by US Submarines

US Submarines Phoenix 1000 submarine

213´ luxury submarine yacht Phoenix 1000 has more than ample space. The total interior area of the submarine is in excess of 460 square meters (5000 square feet). The significant volume, coupled with very large acrylic viewports, and the potential for relatively large open spaces, results in a vehicle as luxurious as the finest of motor yachts.

Clearly, underwater super yacht Phoenix 1000 provides its owner with substantially more capability than a simple yacht – the opportunity to explore the depths of the world’s oceans in perfect comfort and safety. The Phoenix 1000 yacht is capable of making trans-Atlantic crossings at 16 knots yet can dive along the route and explore the continental margins of some of the most fascinating waters on earth.

catamaran submarine

US Submarines Phoenix 1000

And unlike surface yachts, when the water gets rough, the submarine can submerge into a perfectly smooth and quiet environment, continuing on toward its destination, providing a ride unsurpassed in quality-unequaled by the finest motor coach or the most luxurious executive aircraft.

At 65-meters (213 feet) in overall length, and with a beam in excess of 8 meters (26 feet), the Phoenix 1000 is a vehicle of formidable size. Yet despite its 1500-ton displacement, the submarine is quite streamlined. Given the significant waterplane area and ample internal volume, which allows for greater battery storage, the Phoenix 1000 yacht will out-perform smaller counterparts in surface speed, submerged speed and submerged endurance.

Phoenix 1000 luxury submarine

The large pressure hull diameter allows for very large acrylic viewports, making the undersea viewing capability truly extraordinary. The interior space, with the noted absence of structural bulkheads, provides for tremendous versatility in interior layout and space planning. And finally, the Phoenix 1000’s large size coupled with its integrated roll stabilization system makes surface transit quite comfortable in all but the worst conditions.

Flying Bridge

The uppermost level of the vessel is the flying bridge. This area is similar to its equivalent area on most yachts, with the exception of the fact that the materials selected are subject to immersion in water. Ample space exists for lounging, and cushions may be brought up from the area below. The flying bridge also houses the pressure-compensated radar radome, GPS antennae and satellite communications radome, as well as radio aerials, running lights, etc. A remote steering station is also available.

Luxurious interior of the Phoenix 1000 undersea superyacht

Luxurious interior of the Phoenix 1000 undersea superyacht

Deck Saloon

Immediately below the flying bridge and accessible through a large hydraulically operated hatch and a stairway, is the deck saloon. As proposed, this area would be composed of structural acrylic cylindrical sections 2.1 meters (7′) in diameter and 20 centimeters (8″) in thickness. The overall length of the deck saloon pressure hull would be 12 meters.

The deck saloon would have a comfortably appointed interior and would boast an incredible view for observation, both on the surface and when submerged. By fitting transparent sections into the deck of the flying bridge, a view above can be enjoyed as well.

In the forward portion of the saloon is the surface bridge. This area contains all the necessary control, monitoring and navigation equipment to operate the submarine in the surfaced condition. The captain has a hemispherical sector acrylic viewport immediately in front, with the transparent cylindrical walls to either side.

The aft portion of the saloon has a large acrylic window, providing a view astern that also acts as a large hydraulically operated hatch. A small automobile could be kept in the aft section if desired.

Superstructure

The superstructure itself is composed principally of aluminum (or FRP if the owner prefers), and it houses the deck saloon pressure vessel and also provides the structural base for the flying bridge. There is a large degree of latitude possible with regard to the styling of the structure, with the caveat that its hydrodynamic efficiency will have a significant effect on the submerged speed of the submarine.

Aft of the deck saloon is a covered space that can be either fully or partially enclosed. The greater the degree of closure to the after portion of the structure, the less turbulence and the more hydromdynamic efficiency. Hydraulically actuated after doors could be designed to open, allowing fresh air to circulate. The area would be excellent for covered, informal, deck-level dining.

Docking Minisub

Aft of the superstructure, or optionally, above the control cabin on the bow, is an area for a docking minisub. Utilizing a special docking collar, this vehicle is capable of leaving the Phoenix 1000 superyacht while submerged and making excursions down to 610 meters (2000 feet). With both top and bottom hatches, the minisub could also bring passengers from the surface to the submarine lying at depth. The minisub could be designed to hold between two and eight passengers, depending upon the owner’s preferences. Additionally, in the unlikely event of an emergency at depth, the minisub could be used to take passengers and crew to the surface.

Forward Control Room

The forward control room is entered from the main deck through a watertight, pressure-proof door. The control room has a 2.4 meter (8′) diameter hemispherical sector acrylic viewport forward and three 1.8 meter (6′) diameter viewports on either side, with the foremost pair angled slightly forward.

The control room contains all of the control and navigation equipment necessary to operate the submarine while submerged. The 8 meter x 4 meter (26′ x 13′) area contains sufficient space to fit comfortable lounge chairs for passenger observation while underway.

Main Passenger Areas

The main passenger area consists of two decks, each 31 meters (102′) long and 6 meters (20′) wide. The upper deck is accessed from one of two hatches, either from the deck saloon or from a hatch to the after portion of the superstructure. Two stairways, one in the center of the deck, the other in the after section, lead to the lower deck.

The upper deck is intended to provide space for an engineering workstation, a switch and contactor room, crew cabins and mess, as well as the galley. The forward portion, which ends at a bulkhead, is designed as a room of the owner’s choosing.

The main deck is situated such that the forward portion, with eight 1.8 meter (6′) diameter acrylic windows, contains the living and dining areas, while the section aft of the beam houses the owner’s stateroom and guest cabins. Five viewports, 90 centimeters (35″) in diameter, are situated on both port and starboard sides.

Below the passenger area is the battery compartment and bilge. A narrow manway allows access through the compartment for battery maintenance.

Engine Room

The engine room is accessed through doors at the after portion of both passenger decks. The space contains the majority of the equipment necessary for the submarine’s operation, including the main diesels, motor generators, drive systems, air compressors, hydraulic aggregates and life support systems. The upper level of the engine space provides access to the minisub, and in the stern section, to a diver lock-out chamber. The bottom level allows maintenance of the main engines and related components. Diver Lock-out Chamber

A spherical diver lock-out chamber, 2.4 meters (8′) in diameter is fitted above the shafts and attached to the aftermost section of the pressure hull. The chamber allows a diver to enter or exit the submarine from the area between the shafts at depths of up to 45 meters (150′). The chamber can be fitted with decompression capability if required.

Tourist Submarine Catamaran

INQUIRY FORM

The Subcat Catalonia stands as the world’s sole operating hybrid tourist submarine, having undergone an extensive refit that included the installation of new viewports, diesel engines, a significant portion of the electrical wiring, batteries, modern automation systems, high-pressure storage, and a complete internal sandblasting of the ballast tanks, which form the hull. By the end of 2021, it achieved compliance with the classifications set by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Australian Maritime Safety, and the International Flag of Vanuatu.

Given its hybrid design, the Subcat Catalonia falls under the regulations of SOLAS concerning the safety of operations. It adheres to ISM Codes, holding a valid Safety Management Certificate (SMC) issued by the classification society on behalf of the flag state. Additionally, the company has secured a Document of Compliance (DOC) Certificate and is listed on the IMO Shipping Register.

However, the submarine’s innovative features and classification restrictions have led to exemptions from obtaining a Passenger Ship Safety Certificate, MARPOL Certificate, MLC Certificate, and International Ship Security Certificate. Despite these exemptions, it possesses all necessary documentation for international operation within its restrictions, pending local authority permits for diving sites.

The Subcat Catalonia’s hybrid design allows for flexible relocation, offering a comprehensive partnership package potentially under a Submarine Management Agreement. This arrangement would leverage the submarine’s capability, crew, and expertise, while the partner would manage local permits, customer relations, and shore-side services.

A key advantage of this submarine is its dual propulsion system (diesel/electric), enabling it to independently reach dive sites. Passengers benefit from easy access through a horizontal hatch and experience genuine submerging and resurfacing, facilitated by the Pressure Hull’s above-water position. This design simplifies viewport maintenance and extends the vessel’s lifespan. Unlike other vessels, it features a passenger deck for surface travel.

Originally certified for 28 passengers and 2 crew members, it now accommodates an additional staff member (Passenger Guide), bringing its capacity to 27 passengers. This adjustment is subject to regulations by Registration/Maritime Safety Authorities rather than the classification society.

The submarine is capable of carrying 27 passengers and 3 crew members, reaching depths of up to 30 meters. It operates underwater using electric power and employs two diesel engines for surface navigation.

Quick Details:

  • Passengers: 30 (28 passengers + 2 crew)
  • Operating Depth: 30 meters
  • Dimensions: 19.5m (length) x 6m (width)
  • Weight: 60 tons
  • Viewports: 14
  • Class: Certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)
  • Support: Comprehensive start-up support provided

STATUS : This submarine is operational and in excellent condition, having been refitted to a like-new state.

Where Luxury Meets Innovation

Aquanaut, where luxury meets innovation.

Explore the vast depths of scientific innovation and exploration. At Worth Avenue Yachts, we are beyond excited to introduce NEMO. No, not the Disney character, the submarine. Designed by  Officina  Amare Design, the 60-foot catamaran AQUANAUT catamaran offers its very own miniature submarine.

The Submarine Onboard AQUANAUT

The luxury NEMO submarine was strategically built by renowned Dutch submersible manufacturer, U-Boat Worx. Inspired by the iconic Ford Bronco, the Aquanaut has “SUV like” stability and versatility. The boxy shape of the catamaran resembles that classic, rugged look of an SUV. Featuring a cutting-edge hydrodynamic design, the AQUANAUT is sure to provide a smooth and stable ride every time.

Designing AQUANAUT

Once reserved for movies and TV shows, personal submarines have disrupted the luxury yacht market. The AQUANAUT catamaran provides the owner with a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation. The 60’ (18.29m) open-style catamaran features a functional and intentional design. The advanced multihull luxury speeder combines modern luxury with cutting-edge innovation.

The AQUANAUT Deck Space

In terms of deck space, the Aquanaut is no exception. The ample deck space can be further expanded at anchor with bulwarks for hosting parties, family gatherings, and everything in-between. When it’s time for some relaxation, bask in the warmth and sunshine of the open-air jacuzzi.

AQUANAUT Preformance

The innovative and sporty catamaran is equipped with dynamic inboard propulsion of 2×800 hp to offer an impressive speed potential of up to 45 knots and extreme stability at high speeds with the contribution of its Deep-V hydrodynamic design.

AQUANAUT Hydraulic Decks

The large platform on the back for the submarine is equipped with hydraulics that can lower down the underwater craft when launching is required. The same space can be used as a lounging / entertaining area when the submarine is in water and it can be lowered to water level and become the beach club as well.

The platform can go 0.75 m below the water level to launch the U-Boat Worx NEMO submersible. When it comes to the submarine capabilities, NEMO can dive to a depth of 330 feet and able to reach a top speed of three knots underwater. NEMO can operate for up to eight hours before returning to base.

For the Adventure

With eight hours of exploration time, the possibilities are endless. The NEMO submarine is lightweight, compact, and versatile. Requiring less space than two jet-skis, the NEMO submarine can fit just about anywhere on your yacht, trailer, or garage.

NEMO Submarine

The NEMO submarine has a single lifting point and can easily be placed on a flat surface without the need for a cradle or davit. NEMO is easily deployed onshore or from a ship. Recognized with a Red Dot award for its innovative design, the NEMO submarine is considered the “best of the best” in the category ‘Mobility and Transportation.’

Elena Nappi's 'Carapace' superyacht concept

If you’re fortunate enough to own a superyacht , chances are you want to show it off. But for at least one yacht designer, the greatest luxury a boat can offer may be the ability to disappear.

Witness the new superyacht concept dreamed up by naval architect Elena Nappi. Dubbed the Carapace, the hybrid vessel is engineered to cruise the high seas both above and below the water: The 256-foot boat doubles as a fully functional submarine capable of diving to depths of 985 feet for up to 10 days at a time.

  • Station Wagons Are Back: 13 of the World’s Fastest, Most Powerful Models
  • 18 Surprising Facts About the McLaren P1 Hypercar

Even if this was your run-of-the-mill traditional superyacht, the Carapace would stand out, thanks to a breathtaking tech-meets-organic aesthetic with flowing curves that travel from bow to stern. Like many of its peers, the yacht features several beautiful on-deck entertainment areas, including a beach club complete with a pool. But what really makes Nappi’s boat so unique is its light aluminum superstructure, which can be completely sealed up so that it can operate underwater. The designer believes this capability will offer travelers a truly private getaway. It could also appeal to power brokers who might need an added level of secrecy for important meetings.

“The world of luxury submarines is one of the last frontiers in the field of experimentation, and perhaps the hybrid will be the language of the future,” Nappi told CNN . “Very often yacht owners are looking for original solutions to be able to offer their friends and their family something special, and certainly that of a diving cruise of this type is something unprecedented in the superyacht market.”

Elena Nappi's 'Carapace' superyacht concept

Elena Nappi’s ‘Carapace’ superyacht concept  Elena Nappi/Solent News

In addition to its submarine capabilities, the three-level boat will also be fully equipped with all the luxury amenities you’d expect from a superyacht. Whether the boat is operating above or below the water, guests will have access to a lounge, large dining room, bar, spa and health club, among the onboard amenities. And just as a reminder that you are underwater, each of these spaces will offer jaw-dropping views of the surrounding marine life when the vessel is submerged.

The boat will offer solid performance specs as well. According to Nappi, Carapace will be powered by a diesel-electric and fuel cell system that gives it a range of 2,400 miles. This powertrain would allow the boat to reach a top speed of 16 knots on the surface and 12 knots below it.

Of course, Carapace is only a concept right now. But it is a glimpse at a very exciting future for superyachts. It will also be an expensive one: If Nappi’s creation ever becomes a reality, expect it to have a price tag that runs into the hundreds of millions. Check out more photos of the boat below:

  • 334tiffanyw 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Nice island, awful snorkelling. Beautiful island and the lunch buffet was awesome! Boat packed but fun! Great music and great staff. The snorkelling was absolutely terrible and very dangerous. I’m used to swim competitively and I would not recommend the snorkelling for even the best swimmer. A bunch of snorkelling boats meet up at the same place, there is about 600 people in the water all pushed together, the boats stir up so many waves and sand that there is absolutely nothing to see. Finding your group is difficult because each group did not differentiate themselves enough. Getting off and on the boat was done without assistance in turbulent waters. The equipment provided was cheap. I developed a blister in only 30 minutes of swimming with the cheap flipper. The goggles were not sprayed for fog and further leaked. The life jacket was unfortunately mandatory but absolutely required given the dangers in the water. My life jacket did not fit okay because there was no under strap to keep it from rising. Do not recommend. Read more Written November 2, 2023

  • 803georginaa 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic half day catamaran with snorkelling We booked this after researching catamaran trips from Cancun. This was much better value than the one offered through Tui and the only difference was this didn't include a full lunch. However drinks and snacks were provided including cocktails, beers, and bottles of water. We had half an hour of snorkelling. I'd recommend you are a competent swimmer for this as the currents were quite strong in some parts. However our wonderful guide Joel led us in the water and pulled a safety ring behind him the whole time incase you got into trouble (which no one in our party needed thankfully). The trip says it takes up to 30 people however we lucked out and the were only 6 of us on our trip so it felt almost like a private charter! The crew were incredible and looked after us so well. We were dropped on isla mujeres for 2 hours. We hadn't done any research prior to the trip so just wandered then went to a restaurant (pier 7) for tacos and cold drinks. There was a photographer on board who took loads of photos, including when we were snorkelling. Make sure you check how much it'll cost if you'd like the photos before you spend all your money on the island though! (For us it was $120 US for the photos and videos) We were picked up and dropped off at our hotel, with pick up times confirmed the night before and that all ran smoothly. 10/10 recommend this trip!!! Once we arrived we were greeted by Joel. Joel is fantastic. He provided plenty of information about the trip and the island. The crew was knowledgeable and gracious. The trip is exactly out how it is described on the information. It is a 30 minute snorkel experience. I think people are disappointed when the crew sticks to the timeline. The waters are crystal clear and the staff does a great job of stirring up the fish and pointing out stingrays and other landmarks. Once we arrive to the island, they quickly docked the boat and walked us to the meeting point for our return. All points of interest were pointed out so that we could easily navigate the island. The 2 hours on the island is short but you can get a lot done in that amount of time. The return trip home was absolutely beautiful. It was a beautiful and relaxing half day trip! I highly recommend it Read more Written May 19, 2023
