Azimut-Benetti, the World’s Largest Yacht Builder, Introduces a New CEO—and 9 New Boats

The Azimut- Benetti Group has named Marco Valle as its new chief executive officer. Valle, a 25-year veteran who was named CEO of Azimut Yachts in 2016, will now be chief executive of a joined Italian company that is uniting both brands for the first time. Azimut is considered one of the most respected production and semi-custom boat builders, while Benetti is the world’s largest builder of superyachts (by number of units), with a new gigayacht division with yachts over 330 feet.

Valle said in a press conference in Portofino, Italy, on Friday that he plans to “keep the two identities of the brands totally separate,” while also sharing the best practices of both groups. He said the company plans to increase its model numbers from 30 to 35, while also introducing nine new yachts over the next 18 months. “Since the beginning of the year, we’ve delivered 56 units and reasserted our dominance in yachts over 79 feet,” Valle added. “We’re also adding a new category of yacht that will be a trendsetter in the yachting world.”

Despite the complications of Covid-19 on production and distribution, Valle said the company saw its annual revenues increase from the start of the year, as demand soared for new boats.

In introducing most of its new models, the company also brought on stage a number of the different yacht designers it has worked with over the past decade, including Alberto Mancini, Ken Freivokh, Giorgio M. Cassetta, Enrico Bonetti, and Adrian Chisnell of RWD. The varied styles of these designers show the diversity of the different lines in the two brands.

Azimut’s new flagship model, called the Trideck was designed by Achille Salvagni and Alberto Mancini, and will debut in January. Azimut’s Flybridge 53, also designed too by Mancini, is likewise scheduled to make its debut. Mancini said that the Trideck will employ concepts of minimalism, taking its cues from the automotive industry. “It’s difficult to do because this type of yacht is not necessarily elegant, but we kept it as clean and linear as possible,” Mancini said during the press conference. “At the same time, you won’t believe how much space is available inside.”

Azimut also announced a new Magellano 30 Meter yacht as well as an upcoming Magellano 66 for 2021. For the US market, the brand will introduce a new Verve 42.

Benetti showed off its first Oasis 40 M in Portofino. The company said that 10 units have already been sold. Another Oasis will be added to that category. Benetti said it was adding another category called Motopanfilo , “which promises to restore to the fullest all the charm of the classic watercraft models that made the brand famous in the 1960s,” said Valle. The company also said a new 121-footer in its B.Yond category will be launched next September.

Azimut Benetti, Marco Valle is the new CEO of the group

  • May 27, 2020

Important change in the Azimut-Benetti Group’s top management team which is preparing for a really important evolution. On September 1, 2020, engineer Franco Fusignani will hand over responsibility for the Benetti Division in the hands of Dr. Marco Valle , currently in charge of the Azimut division.

Marco-Valle_Ceo-Azimut-Benetti-Group

With this appointment, once again, the Azimut Benetti Group shows how it is possible to globally evolve while preserving the typical values of a “family-run” company, light years away from the financial logic that has negatively affected the yachting sector.

The appointment of Marco Valle is not random since, thanks to the experience gained in 25 years of activity within the company, he combines extraordinary business skills and the ability to work in continuum with the business spirit and Paolo Vitelli’s imprint.

Engineer Fusignani will continue to be part of Azimut Benetti’s Board of Directors after September 1, for his experience gained in fifty years of work, offering all the necessary support in order to guarantee the efficient management of the integrated business, the different offer of product, the separate marketing and after-sales services of the two brands and their strengthening on the market.

Franco Fusignani

Obviously, the desire to preserve the specificities and values of each brand, whose distinct identities are the basis of the Group’s success, remains confirmed but it is equally clear that this choice aims to encourage the organic and unitary management of the business, with advantages in terms of effectiveness, timeliness and efficiency.

” Marco Valle, who joined the company 25 years ago, goes to the full support of the Vitelli family and the Group Board of Directors for this new challenge, which he will certainly be able to take with the same spirit of success that has marked his work, first as commercial manager of Azimut Yachts and, for four years, as CEO of the Azimut division”,

Paolo Vitelli

” We thank Franco for the great work he has done and continue to do in Benetti and the future continuity of his presence in the Group. Continuity deemed important to face new challenges in the face of an evolving market and generational change of current management “.

Azimut Benetti Group

Azimut|Benetti is the largest and most prestigious yacht manufacturer in the world. With 138 sales and service centers in 80 countries, the Group includes the estabilished Azimut Yachts and Benetti brands, each dedicated to a different market segment. Marco Valle to become Azimut Benetti's Group CEO from 1 September

The Vitelli family and the Azimut Benetti board of directors have announced that on 1 September 2020, Franco Fusignani, 75, will hand over responsibility of the group’s Benetti Division to Marco Valle, who remains in charge of the Azimut Division. Valle will take on the role of Group CEO with responsibility for both of the aforementioned divisions as a means encouraging integrated business management.

“Marco Valle, who joined the company 25 years ago, has the full support of the Vitelli family and the Group’s Board of Directors in this new challenge, which he will no doubt rise to with the same spirit of success that has been a distinctive feature of his work, first as Azimut Yachts sales director and for the last four years as CEO of the Azimut division,” comments Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group Chairman. “We would like to thank Franco for the great work he has done and continues to do in Benetti, and for his continued future presence in the Group. This continuity is thought to be important to tackle the new challenges of an evolving market and generational change in the current management team.”

According to Azimut Benetti, this decision will encourage “an organic and unified approach to business management, benefitting effectiveness, rapid response and efficiency.” The group intends to preserve the unique identities of the two yachting brands. Fusignani will continue to sit on the board of Azimut Benetti after 1 September, further lending his 50 years of experience to the Azimut Benetti cause.

According to The Superyacht Agency, over the course of the last decade Benetti delivered an average of 10.5 superyacht projects per year, peaking in 2015 will 13 deliveries. However, with 15 deliveries scheduled for 2020, Benetti was due for its most prolific year to date. That being said, with impact of COVID-19 in Italy leading to shipyard closures, it is likely that Benetti will fall short of it’s 15 schedule deliveries. Nevertheless, it is hoped that the Italian superyacht building stalwart’s delivery schedules have not been too dramatically altered.

benetti yachts ceo

Since 2010, the average LOA of Benetti’s deliveries has fluctuated between 40.7-48.1m for a given year. However, 2020 may be the first year that Benetti’s average LOA creeps above 50m, with the projected deliveries expected to average out at 50.7m. While Benetti is largely known for being a production builder, its growing average LOA figures lend credence to the notion that Benetti is now a far more diverse shipyard than it is always given credit for being.

As  Robb Report  celebrates its 30 years of Best of the Best awards, we interviewed Italian yacht-builder  Benetti ‘s CEO  Vincenzo Poerio  to view those three decades through his industry’s lens. Lorenzo Benetti established the company in 1873 in Viareggio, Italy , and Poerio joined in 1993. Poerio shares how the industry has changed over the years.

When you started at Benetti in 1993, how were superyachts different from today?

Most superyachts averaged about 80 feet, with very simple design and construction. Technology was basic. There were very few onboard electronics—certainly nothing like today’s wired boats. The interiors were also classic, with walls and furniture built from cherry or mahogany. The bulkheads were marine plywood, so they tended to be straight. Now we use lightweight composite panels that can be shaped if the design calls for it. Other materials for interior designs are just as contemporary—fabrics, leather, gold, stainless steel, and marble or other stones you’d see in residential dwellings. The marble we use is often a skin attached to a carbon-fiber panel. Every ounce counts. Aesthetics are at a much higher level, but so are standards. We became more sophisticated as rules and standards became more complex.

What was your largest yacht back then?

Benetti built the 285-foot Nabila in 1980, but she was a rarity. In 2000, we also launched the 229-foot Reverie, which at the time had a massive internal volume of 2,000 gross tons . . . one of the largest interiors ever on a yacht. Now, many of the larger custom superyachts are closer to 6,000 gross tons. The average length may be increasing, but the internal space is what is really changing. Most owners seem to prefer having space and comfort over speed. They want the same comforts they have at home.

Are you seeing younger clients?

Yes, and they don’t want to wait three years for their dream boats. They’re also pushing more contemporary styling, which we can accommodate in our larger fiberglass models, since fiberglass reproduces complicated shapes. At the larger end, we’re seeing increased demand for semi-custom yachts to save a client two years in the build process. Redman Whiteley Dixon’s recent 184-, 207-, and 223-foot models in our Custom Class series have been well received. For both technology and design, it’s an exciting time for superyachts.

AZIMUT|BENETTI INAUGURATES THE NAUTICAL YEAR WITH A NEW CEO AND AN EXTRAORDINARY PROGRAMME OF NEW PRODUCT LAUNCHES

Azimut|Benetti restarts from Marco Valle, officially vested with the new role of Group CEO by Vice President Giovanna Vitelli at the annual meeting with the media that traditionally kicks off the nautical year.

Since joining the company in 1996, Valle has been assigned increasingly prominent roles that have led him to take on the position of CEO of Azimut Yachts in 2016. He now has been chosen by the owners to harmonize the best practices of both brands, with the aim of creating synergies and developing ever-better efficiencies.

This past year, despite the halt imposed by the pandemic, the company – which has built its success by continually investing in the credibility and reputation of its brands – still managed to confirm its solidity and dynamism. The Azimut | Benetti season therefore begins with a highly promising outlook.

“I am extremely proud to declare that we have managed to ensure the delivery of all our orders, thanks to the flexibility that the company deployed at every level in the most difficult months. And that’s not all: with an increase in units sold – 56 to date – , we once again reasserted our leadership in the market of yachts measuring over 24 metres long”, says Giovanna Vitelli, who goes on to say that “the appointment of Marco Valle fixes an inconsistency in our reality that over time had brought Benetti and Azimut to behave more as cousins than as brothers. Both brands are now ready for a new dynamic of heightened exchange and optimisation. Marco, with his strategic, broad-range vision, his ability to promote teamwork, his knowledge of the market and, above all, his commercial intuition, is the right man to make this step”.

For his part, Valle emphasised how important it is to keep the identity of each brand intact and well-distinct, while fully respecting the signature characteristics of each shipyard.

It was always Valle who then introduced the second part of the meeting, focusing on the calendar of new launches scheduled for the next 18 months.

“Relying on a financial position that, despite this very complex year, has been further strengthened, we are now able to present a particularly rich program of product development. Our overall product range will increase from 30 to 35 models, thus essentially covering all the existing categories in the luxury yachting market, bringing the Collections from 8 to 10, adding the luxury explorer category, B.Yond and the whole Oasis experience. This will allow us to continue serving our international clientele with even greater accuracy, meeting their demands with a range that not only offers yachts from 12 to over 100 metres long, but also makes it possible to choose from very different and assorted styles of navigation and experiences on board”, explained Marco Valle.

In fact, the Company will be showcasing an impressive 9 new models in the next 18 months.

Working in partnership with a handful of designers who for some years now have been defining the new signature style of the two brands, such as Alberto Mancini, Ken Freivokh, Giorgio M. Cassetta, Enrico Bonetti (Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture), Adrian Chisnell (RWD), the collaboration continued in a crescendo of anticipations and surprises, all of which are already part of the production pipeline.

For Azimut Yachts the range spans from the new flagship model, the Trideck designed by Achille Salvagni and Alberto Mancini, which will be ready by next January, when the Flybridge 53 (designed too by Mancini) is also scheduled to make its debut, to the Magellano 30 Metres, the older sister-model of the 25 Metres, which celebrated her debut in Portofino with the world premiere of Gabriele Muccino’s short film dedicated to the yacht. Plus the new Verve 42, a new Flybridge, and the new Magellano 66.

Benetti, who celebrated delivery of the first Oasis 40 M in Portofino (10 units sold on paper), will consolidate this new category with yet another model and will welcome the addition of a new product category, that of Motopanfilo , which promises to restore to the fullest all the charm of the classic watercraft models that made the brand famous in the 1960s. Scheduled for next September, instead, is the introduction of the 37 M of the new B.Yond category.

THE COMPANY LED BY THE VITELLI FAMILY IS CONFIRMED AS THE WORLD’S LEADING YACHT MANUFACTURER, WITH A 14% SHARE OF THE WORLD MARKET, A 23% INCREASE IN PRODUCTION VALUE AND EBITDA UP BY 50%.

The Azimut|Benetti Group retains its position as the  world’s leading manufacturer of yachts over 24 meters , firmly securing its top spot in the Global Order Book edited by  Boat International  magazine. This book annually collects and analyzes data from 177 shipyards worldwide. The 2024 edition awards the Group first place for both the number of units under construction and the cumulative length of projects:  167 yachts  totaling  6014 meters,  representing 14% of the world market examined by Boat International.

These figures are corroborated by the Group’s  record results  for the financial year ending August 31st, 2023. Production value grew by over 23% compared to the previous year, and Ebitda increased by 50%. The Group’s resilience is further demonstrated by the consistent growth in production value, nearly doubling in the last five years— from 700 million to 1.3 billion euros —and  the order portfolio extending until 2027 . This success is a testament to the market’s preference for the Group’s stylistic and technological solutions, as well as its focus on fuel consumption and environmental impact.

These numbers, supported by excellent capital and financial solidity, enable the company to invest 150 million euros over the next three years. This commitment is accompanied by the Group’s dedication to research and development, specifically focusing on solutions to reduce environmental impact. Today, the Group proudly announces  leading results in the boating industry for lowering CO2 emissions . This includes the first-of-its-kind agreement in the sector for the use of  HVO biofuel . Encouraged by these results, the Group is actively promoting the development of a  public index to measure yacht efficiency , in collaboration with Lloyd’s Register and the Superyacht Eco Association.

The extraordinary longevity of the Shipyard’s leading position can be traced to the status of  private   family  company  of Azimut|Benetti Group, led by the Vitelli family together with two quality minority shareholders – PIF and TIP – who hold a stimulus and control function: since its foundation, the ownership has pursued a  coherent, resilient and sustainable business model , which is a long-term strategy focused on customer experience, constant product innovation and care for people. With the recent generational change –  President Giovanna Vitelli  taking the helm – the Group has undertaken a  path of evolution  that aims to further develop its managerial culture and governance, respecting the entrepreneurial DNA that continues to spur the success of the Company with rapid decision-making, a calibrated approach to growth and investments, and attention to the wellbeing of workers.

These traits translate into a strategic plan based on three pillars:  the evolution of the product in terms of design and sustainability, the development of services through the Lusben and Yachtique brands, and the nourishing of talent.

The product – Beauty, innovation and sustainability

The key contributor to the Group’s first place in the Global Order Book ranking is the success of the models by Azimut and Benetti: cutting-edge concepts that  anticipate owners’ desires and industry trends  time after time. The  creation of new lifestyles on board  and the  reduction of CO2 emissions and energy consumption  are the guiding principles of the Group’s product philosophy, both of which are reflected in the Azimut and Benetti yachts consistently with the values of the two brands.

Azimut  explores new frontiers in architecture, positioning itself as the design hub that enriches the yachting world with the creativity of  various contributors from different sectors.  The most recent collaboration with  Matteo Thun,  for instance, introduces a new conscious design concept that respects the interconnected relationship between people, yacht, and the environment.

Furthermore, the brand is a pioneer in the development of solutions to reduce emissions integrating  high-efficiency hulls , the extensive use of  carbon, and innovative propulsion systems . Today, over half of Azimut’s fleet is made up of  Low Emission Yachts , which guarantee a reduction in emissions of up to 30%. In the spring of 2024, the Shipyard will present its first hybrid Series and the most efficient ever built:  Seadeck .

Benetti reinvents the concept of iconic models  through collaborations with internationally renowned architects, such as Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture, notable for their recent Pace Gallery project in New York. These collaborations aim to reinterpret classic design language, incorporating sophisticated influences from the realms of  architecture, fashion design, and art.  One of the most influential contemporary stylistic innovations introduced by Benetti is the  Oasis Deck®,  a true revolution in the concept of the beach area. For the first time, it transforms the aft deck into a sea oasis, providing an experience in close contact with nature.

oasis

Currently, the Shipyard offers almost its entire range with hybrid systems. The Benetti B.Yond has been recognized as the greenest model in its category, achieving a significant reduction in CO2 emissions (up to 24%) and NOx emissions (up to 85%). The next objective is to  further optimize consumption and emissions generated by onboard systems.  This issue is particularly relevant to larger boats, which spend approximately 90% of their time at anchor. Benetti has begun addressing this by developing solutions such as the  “Zero-Emission Hotel Mode,”  powered by fuel cells and advanced  power management  systems. These solutions include measures that can  reduce air conditioning energy consumption by up to 50%.

The results achieved by Azimut and Benetti demonstrate a commitment to implementing  green solutions on a broad scale,  not just on one-off prototype models. By combining future-oriented research with the implementation of the  best available and effective solutions today , the Group aims for the greatest possible impact in the short, medium, and long terms.

The Group’s activities are guided by its determination to lead the sector towards a more conscious and scientific approach to the topic of environmental sustainability, while promoting  greater transparency in communication . With this objective, Azimut, together with  Lloyd’s Register , one of the main classification bodies in the maritime sector, conducted a consumption and emissions certification plan in the summer of 2023, which led to the definition of an objective and comparable  Carbon Emission Index , which the  Superyacht Eco Association  used to extend the  SEA Index  to yachts under 24m, the most widespread category of yachts in our seas and the one involving the greatest number of owners, with the ambition of starting an unprecedented movement.

In 2023, the Group signed the first agreement in the sector with Eni Live for the replacement of all fossil fuels used by the Group for sea trials, tests, and prototype transfers with  HVO biodiesel . HVO biodiesel is a biofuel made from renewable raw materials*, allowing a  reduction in CO2 emissions by up to 90%  compared to the reference fossil mix, depending on the materials used for its production**. According to the agreement signed with Eni Live, the Group will purchase approximately  700,000 liters of HVO  starting this year, thereby preventing the release of up to 1,800 tons of CO2 into the environment. This reduction is equivalent to preventing the emissions from about 1,800 flights from Frankfurt to New York.

Finally, all the Group’s offices operate with the aim of reducing the environmental impact from all sources: the production sites will use  renewable sources  to cover approximately 50% of their energy requirements by 2026 and, with an eye to developing an  increasingly circular economy , projects have been initiated to  recover fiberglass, wood  and other residual material.

The services – Lusben and Yachtique

The strategic plan of the Azimut|Benetti Group envisions the further  development of the service hub  with the aim of supporting owners throughout their yachting experience. The Group confirms the growing  strategic role of Lusben and the refit activity  by investing  15 million euros  to expand the Lusben shipyard in Livorno. This facility, one of the brand’s three, alongside Varazze and Viareggio, will be equipped to host yachts over 100 meters in length, solidifying its position as one of the  three main players in the Mediterranean  for superyachts.

Following the same strategic logic,  Yachtique , the Group’s internal styling lounge created over twenty years ago to advise and accompany owners from their furnishing choices to the purchase of art and antiques, will also  expand its facilities in Tuscany  over the next three years.

Finally, the Group’s services division has recently been enriched with the  first nautical “Airbnb” proposal , which allows Azimut owners to  offer their yacht for charter  anywhere in the world on a digital platform developed by Azimut. Local dealers will handle the management of the boats, as well as check-in and check-out.

A school of talents

The leadership role that the Azimut|Benetti Group holds in the sector is closely connected to its commitment to supporting its 2,400 direct employees— a growth of +24% in the last 3 years —in their professional growth and training for roles in demand in the nautical sector. This commitment fosters employment in an industry that symbolizes Italian production and manufacturing excellence.

To address these goals, the Shipyard established the  Azimut|Benetti Group Corporate Academy , becoming the first in the nautical sector to approach training with a transversal and integrated model. This model includes the  Shipyard Academy —providing 144,000 hours of training per year—the  Executive Academy , and  Edu & Career Guidance  projects in collaboration with universities, high schools, and technical institutes. The internal  nautical  module, involving employees in a cruising experience on the Group’s yachts, brings the Group’s mission to life by making people experience, know and love the product:  to build the most beautiful, reliable, technological and innovative yacht and assist it always and everywhere.

* Pursuant to the Directive UE 2018/2001 “REDII”.

** According to the conventional criterion of Directive (EU) 2018/2001 “REDII”, the reduction in CO2eq emissions of the HVOlution along the logistics-production chain in 2022 was between 60% and 90%, compared to the mix reference fossil (i.e. 94g CO2eq/MJ), depending on the raw materials used for its production.

Azimut Yachts Division Announce New CEO

By B. Roberts

The Azimut-Benetti Group has announced the appointment of Paolo Casani as the new CEO of the Azimut Yachts Division – one of the leading companies in the luxury yacht sector.

Paolo Casani began a sterling career with the company in 2008 after 25 years of experience in the fashion and luxury goods sector. The Yachtique Division of Azimut-Benetti was successfully directed by Casani until he was appointed the new CEO of the Azimut Yachts Division.

Paolo Casani is set to take over many of the responsibilities carried by Gianni Cucco, the previous CEO of Azimut who holds ten-years of experience at the top of the company. Cucco was recently called back by Chairman Paolo Vitelli to temporarily direct Azimut Yachts and help select his successor from amongst the company’s internal resources. Azimut stated in the most recent release that having now completed his duties, Gianni Cucco will remain with the company to support the Azimut division and will continue to carry out some corporate activities.

The Azimut-Benetti Group has decided to split its activities into two main areas: boats up to 30m, headed by the new CEO of Azimut, Paolo Casani, with help from the head of the Atlantis Division, Luca Sburlati, and boats over 30m which will be directed by Vincenzo Poerio, a historic company manager who has worked as CEO of Benetti for 18 years, and will from now on also be responsible for the Grande Collection models branded Azimut Yachts.
