The flying megayacht: Italian designer devises exclusive catamaran blimp

Miquel Ros

The aerospace industry is currently living through an era of innovation, unlike anything it has seen in recent years. From drones and air taxis to sea gliders and new clean propulsion technologies, it seems that the floodgates of creativity are wide open following decades of slow but steady incremental advances. Even airships may be about to stage a comeback .

This passion for innovation is encouraging entrepreneurs from across the globe to propose ever more outlandish concepts — one of which is the eye-catching Air Yacht, a hybrid vehicle that looks like a crossover between an airship and a catamaran.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

This futuristic aircraft is the work of Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini, founder of Rome -based Lazzarini Design Studio, which has designed a number of innovative projects for the automotive, yachting and aerospace industries.

Composed of two large parallel blimps linked together by carbon fiber bridges that hold the whole structure together, the amphibious Air Yacht would be able to move almost seamlessly through the air and water. Passengers and cargo would travel in a rigid, aerodynamic cabin between the two blimp structures.

This levitating contraption, which would be powered by hydrogen and solar power from its rooftop panels, would be able to reach speeds of up 70 knots (nearly 81 mph) when flying and 5 knots (almost 6 mph) when sailing, its designers say.

The choice of hydrogen is an interesting one, as other recent airship projects have opted to use helium instead of hydrogen.

Asked about this decision, a spokesperson at the design studio said it opted for hydrogen due to its larger lifting power, which makes it possible to limit the volume of the blimps. Despite hydrogen being flammable, current technologies and materials make it possible to use the gas safely and securely, the studio says.

air yacht ltd

While the original concept measured a whopping 265 meters (869 feet) long and was capable of carrying 200 passengers, the latest iteration is much more compact at 100 meters (328 feet) long. (Presumably, it would have a somewhat lower payload, too.)

The Air Yacht has a stated flying endurance of 48 hours, and it is being designed to allow for boarding and deboarding while on the move. Helicopters would be able to land on a helipad located on top of the cabin to drop off or pick up passengers, the studio says.

Given the limited number of travelers with access to helicopters, it's not surprising that the aircraft concept is targeted at wealthy individuals as a flying megayacht of sorts. The luxe cabin design features a shipowner's suite that occupies the central space and provides 360-degree views. Additionally, there are five smaller suites, plus a large area for lounging and dining.

air yacht ltd

Although Lazzarini Design Studio has yet to secure investors for the Air Yacht, the studio is moving forward with testing a 30-meter (98-foot) scale model in Germany later this year.

There will likely be some unexpected challenges in this next phase of the Air Yacht's production journey, and only time will tell whether this latest aircraft will help spark a renewed interest in airships.

Meet Air Yacht, a Bonkers Flying Superyacht Concept Powered by Two Helium Blimps

Is it a boat? Is it a plane? Well, folks, Lazzarini ’s futuristic new concept is a bit of both.

The disruptive design studio, which routinely delivers extreme marine creations , has just unveiled a flying superyacht called Air Yacht that looks as though it’s come straight from a sci-fi flick. The vessel’s tech is at the bleeding edge, too, with helium being the main source of fuel.

Made from carbon fiber, the Air Yacht has one main 262-foot hull sandwiched between a pair of 492-foot airships. These two “floating balloons,” as Lazzarini describes them, will be divided into hives to store helium gas. Think of it as a superyacht with two blimps that can lift it to the skies.

The Air Yacht can either fly or sail.  Lazzarini Design

The Italian outfit hasn’t gone into too much detail regarding how this propulsion actually works but says the compressed helium allows the Air Yacht to “fly” for up to 48 hours at a top speed of 60 knots. The cruiser is also equipped with eight counter-rotating electric engines powered by ultra-light batteries and solar panels. This setup enables the yacht to sail on the water at 5 knots with no noise or pollution.

“With the Air Yacht, there is a way to sail the sky without emissions damaging the future,” the studio said in a statement.

Lazzarini assures the vessel packs all the features of a typical luxury yacht as well. The central hull comprises a large dining area and living room, along with the master cabin which offers a large ensuite and sprawling panoramic views. To top it off, this hull features a helipad and swimming pool on the roof.

Sky Yacht

The futuristic superyacht still is equipped with a swimming pool, of course.  Lazzarini Design

The two accompanying airships, meanwhile, can be accessed via four separate bridges and each offer five ensuite staterooms with expansive windows to take in the vistas when in flight.

As for who will pilot the Air Yacht, Lazzarini says the vessel is not intended for “touristic purposes.”

Sky Yacht

The interior of the Air Yacht is fittingly modern.  Lazzarini Design

“It’s for a private owner who wants both a superyacht and evolution in aviation,” the studio adds.

Like all of Lazzarini’s creations, from the swan-shaped megayacht to the 276-foot superyacht with a giant hole in the superstructure, the Air Yacht will remain a concept until somebody chooses to make it a reality.

Tucson Air Branch aircrews lift migrants in distress

TUCSON, Ariz. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operations (AMO) UH-60 aircrews rescued 5 migrants trapped in rugged terrain in the Peloncillo Mountain range over the weekend.

Friday afternoon, a Tucson Air Branch Black Hawk aircrew responded to an air support request Douglas Station Horse Patrol Agents for a group of migrants who were experiencing heat exhaustion. The aircrew was joined by three members of Tucson Sector’s Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) Unit; one of which was a Paramedic.  The first patient was unresponsive and seizing. After inserting two AMO Rescue Specialists to clear a landing zone, the migrant was loaded onto the aircraft and flown to an awaiting air ambulance. A second migrant suffering from heat exhaustion and delirious was then lifted to an awaiting Douglas Fire crew who also responded. The third migrant was unable to walk, necessitating the individual to be raised into the aircraft via hoist along with an AMO Rescue Specialist. The patient was also flown to awaiting Douglas Fire Department personnel for transport by ground ambulance.

An AMO aircrew rescue specialist is hoisted into the aircraft with an injured migrant

Sunday evening, an air support request resulted in a Tucson Air Branch aircrew crew being dispatched to the Peloncillo Mountain Range near the Arizona/New Mexico border. After finding an acceptable landing zone in the harsh/steep mountainous terrain, the first patient was loaded along with a member of the Douglas Horse Patrol Unit. The patient was airlifted to an awaiting air ambulance. The aircrew returned to retrieve the second individual who was taken to a waiting ground ambulance for transport to the same hospital in Sierra Vista. The horse Patrol Unit member was flown back to the rest of his team, to walk the remaining seven migrants in the group to awaiting transportation to the station for processing.

“Our aircrews are trained and capable of rapidly shifting from operational missions to humanitarian roles,” stated Jessie Scruggs, Director of Air and Marine Operations, Tucson Air Branch. “These two incidents represent what our aircrews are called to assist agents on the ground who encounter the growing number of migrants who become distressed by the unrelentless conditions they are placed in by callous smugglers.”

Transnational criminal organizations continue to recklessly endanger the lives of individuals they smuggle across difficult terrain and hot temperatures for their own financial gain. Smuggling organizations are abandoning migrants in remote and dangerous areas, leading to a rise in the number of rescues CBP has performed.

CBP’s message for anyone who is thinking of entering the United States illegally along the Southern border is simple:  don’t do it. When migrants cross the border illegally, they put their lives in peril.

Marine captains honored for saving a man’s life in the Dallas airport

Two Marine pilots recently received commendation medals for their quick reaction that helped save a man’s life while they were waiting on their flight in the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

Capts. Steven Maire and Joseph Carey were traveling home to California from the Marine Aviation Readiness and Operations Summit in Dallas on May 23 when they noticed a man collapse near the ticket counter, the pair shared in a Marine release .

“I was checking in for my ticket and I saw him on the ground and realized something wasn’t right,” said Maire, an AH-1Z Viper pilot and a Cleveland native. “That’s when [Carey] saw him and started heading over to him, then I followed.”

Carey, an MV22B Osprey pilot, didn’t see any medical or emergency personnel. The Hanover, New Hampshire, native realized he and his fellow Marine captain were the closest people who could help the man.

“We just got down on the floor with him and started to figure out what the problem was,” Carey said.

Marine corporal gets medal for saving drowning teen while on leave

After jumping into the river in his t-shirt and shorts, cpl. jacob cogswell battled a strong current to bring the teenager to safety..

The two pilots, currently assigned to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, made their initial assessment. The Marine expeditionary unit is part of 1st Marine Division and recently participated in the bilateral U.S.–Philippines Exercise Balikatan.

“The man wasn’t responsive and was very tense, so at first I thought it was a seizure,” Maire said. “We’re pilots ― not medical professionals ― but we remembered what we’ve been trained to do and just helped.”

The pair realized the man wasn’t breathing and likely had suffered a heart attack.

“He was unresponsive and not breathing for long enough that he started turning blue,” said Carey, describing the man’s face and lips.

Carey began chest compressions, part of cardiopulmonary resuscitation while the man’s wife gave periodic rescue breaths.

An airline official brought an automated electronic defibrillator.

“He had a very weak pulse, so when they brought over the defibrillator, I immediately hooked the leads up to his chest to use it,” Maire said.

Carey cleared the area before Maire used the automated external defibrillator to administer the first shock. When there wasn’t an immediate response, he used a second shock and more chest compressions. The man slowly awakened.

“When he came back, that was a huge relief,” Carey said. “It was just great to see what we did worked.”

At about that time, paramedics arrived and took over care of the man from the Marines.

“I’m glad someone was able to be there and help him, but it was very surreal,” Maire said. “One minute we were getting our tickets, then we were reacting to this situation, and then it was over, and we were worried about getting to the gate to catch our flights.”

On June 10, in front of 200 fellow Marines of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 165 (Reinforced), 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, the Marine expeditionary unit’s commanding officer, Col. Sean Dynan, presented the men with the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal .

The medal is awarded for acts of heroism, meritorious achievement or service ― one notch below the Bronze Star Medal and Meritorious Service Medal when combat is not involved.

The colonel noted how the captains’ fast actions embodied what he sees as the role for the entire unit, to be ready to deploy to crisis or ready to “be somebody’s hero” by those in need.

Squadron commander Lt. Col. Drew Bossart shared his thoughts also on his Marines’ heroism at the ceremony.

“Their quick thinking, exceptional teamwork, and unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of others epitomize the core values of our Marine Corps,” said Bossart.

“They’re true leaders who didn’t hesitate to take charge of a surprise situation and begin fighting to save someone’s life, and I’m extremely proud to serve with them and recognize their lifesaving efforts.”

Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems to Launch "Predictive Diagnosis Service" Proposal for Air Compressors Using Machine Learning

Improved Maintenance Work Efficiency through Coordination of Maintenance Staff Know-How and Data

X Official Account

Tokyo, June 19, 2024 – Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Yasuhiro Takeuchi; hereinafter "Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems") today announced it has launched the "Predictive Diagnosis Service" for air compressors used as power sources for factory equipment, etc. The service uses machine learning to analyze data obtained through remote monitoring and combines it with the knowledge accumulated by Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems maintenance staff to detect and prevent problems and abnormalities that could lead to equipment stoppages in advance. This service also uses the expertise of maintenance staff to estimate the effects of factors that reduce operating efficiency and can propose more efficient operations with less environmental impact.

Background of New Service

To ensure the stable operation of air compressors, specialized technicians are needed to perform maintenance and inspections. However, due to the declining birthrate and aging population, the number of technicians is decreasing, and there is an urgent need for remote maintenance management and more efficient operations. In addition, from the perspective of preventing global warming, there is a growing need to reduce environmental impact by operating equipment more efficiently with lower power consumption.

Since October 2017, Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems has offered FitLive * , an equipment monitoring service, which reduces the equipment downtime by monitoring the operating status of each product remotely and automatically sending alerts when problems occur. Analysis of FitLive data for air compressors has revealed that temperature-related alarms and malfunctions account for approximately 75% of all alarms and malfunctions. Therefore, we developed a predictive diagnostic service that uses machine learning to estimate the future effects of temperature rise trends detected by sensors and take preventive measures against malfunctions.

Features of the Service

This service systematizes the decision-making know-how accumulated by Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems' maintenance staff during their maintenance management work and uses it as a basis for decision making.Predictive diagnostics are performed by a combination of machine learning and know-how, and the results and the factors on which the estimation is based are displayed. In the past, maintenance staff made inferences and provided consulting based on the data they had obtained, but this service enables maintenance staff to make more specific and effective proposals by automatically performing predictive diagnosis. The data can also be used to identify cases in which the performance of an air compressor tends to deteriorate, such as when the ambient temperature of the air compressor is high or the filter needs to be cleaned, and to propose more efficient operation methods.

Currently, this function is only available for the 22/37kW inverter type oil-injected screw air compressors of the NEXT3 series, but the number of applicable models will be expanded in the future. Through the expansion of this service, we will provide more detailed and speedy preventive maintenance proposals to minimize air compressor outages, reduce energy consumption, and propose operations that help reduce environmental impact.

Could spraying sea salt into the clouds cool the planet?

An experiment in Alameda, Calif. highlights the controversy surrounding research on altering the environment to cool the planet.

air yacht ltd

A city council meeting in Alameda, Calif. on Tuesday will take center stage in the global controversy over whether to try cool the planet by making clouds brighter.

Researchers at the University of Washington are studying a concept called “ marine cloud brightening ,” which aims to slow climate change by spraying clouds with sea salt. Salt particles help clouds form tiny, shiny water droplets, which reflect sunlight away from the earth before it can heat the planet.

In April, University of Washington scientists started testing a saltwater spraying machine on the deck of the USS Hornet, a retired aircraft carrier docked in Alameda. The city paused the experiment in May, citing health and environmental concerns — but outside consultants hired by the city later concluded the test doesn’t pose “a measurable health risk to the surrounding community.”

The Alameda experiment isn’t meant to “alter clouds or any aspect of the local weather or climate,” according to Sarah Doherty, a University of Washington atmospheric scientist who runs the university’s marine cloud brightening program. The scientists are only testing whether their salt spray machine works and studying how salt particles move through the air.

“Frankly, it was about as innocuous an experiment as one can do,” said Gernot Wagner, a climate economist at Columbia Business School who wrote a book on planet-cooling technologies, “ Geoengineering: the Gamble ,” and is not involved in the study.

The episode highlights the stiff opposition scientists face when they research anything related to geoengineering, a broad category of techniques that aim to manipulate the climate. Some environmentalists argue that these ideas could have dangerous, unpredictable side effects — and are a distraction from cutting carbon emissions, the most surefire way to avoid climate change.

“Geoengineering experiments, like the Marine Cloud Brightening project in the Bay Area, set a dangerous precedent and risk legitimizing a highly-speculative and harmful technology,” wrote Mary Church, who heads geoengineering advocacy for the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), an American and Swiss environmental nonprofit.

Environmental groups including the CIEL are calling on Alameda officials to end the University of Washington experiment . City council members will decide Tuesday whether the researchers can continue their study, which they hope to run for several more months.

What is marine cloud brightening?

Marine cloud brightening attempts to cool the planet by reflecting more sunlight back into space. Some scientists hope it could buy humanity more time to cut carbon emissions — or protect overheated ocean environments such as the Great Barrier Reef.

The fluffy, white tops of certain clouds act like a natural sunscreen for the planet; the water droplets and ice crystals within reflect 30 to 60 percent of sunlight that hits them, according to NASA. Geoengineering researchers believe they can make clouds brighter — and increase their cooling effect — by increasing the number of droplets they contain.

Since 1990, researchers have theorized they could do this by spraying clouds with sea salt particles , which give the moisture in the air something to glom onto so they can form water droplets, or ice crystals. This already happens naturally when ocean winds blow sea foam high into the air, but scientists believe they can amp up the process to noticeably lower the temperature underneath a cloud.

But scientists don’t have machines that can reliably spray sea salt particles at the right size and in the right quantity to alter clouds, making it hard to try this in the real world. The experiment in Alameda is meant to test a new salt spray machine to see if it works outside of a lab — and to study some basic physics about how particles move through the air.

Doherty stressed that the University of Washington researchers are not trying to brighten clouds in Alameda, but added that the experiment will help “study how clouds respond to particles … in the atmosphere and how this influences climate, including both the effects of pollution aerosols and the potential for brightening marine clouds to reduce climate warming.”

The shipping industry ran what amounted to an accidental test of the idea for decades, by emitting tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere from ships’ smokestacks. The sulfur particles, like salt, helped form water droplets in clouds. When new rules forced the ships to stop emitting sulfur in 2020, ocean temperatures rose — largely because ocean clouds were no longer as bright , according to a study published last month in Communications Earth & Environment.

Australian researchers at Southern Cross University began a small experiment with marine cloud brightening near the Great Barrier Reef in 2020 but haven’t published conclusive results.

Why is marine cloud brightening controversial?

Some environmental groups oppose marine cloud brightening and other geoengineering techniques because they worry altering planetary systems will have unintended consequences and give polluters an excuse to keep pumping carbon into the atmosphere.

More than 70 environmental nonprofits and activist groups wrote an open letter opposing this line of research last month. “Geoengineering our oceans is a dangerous distraction from the real solutions to the climate crisis and gives the fossil fuel industry a potential escape hatch while putting our oceans and coastal communities at serious risk,” they wrote.

Earlier this year, Harvard scientists gave up a decade-long quest to test a different geoengineering tactic that would involve releasing particles from a hot-air balloon high into the stratosphere to reflect sunlight. The researchers tried and failed to get approval to launch the balloon from Arizona, New Mexico and finally Sweden, whose government canceled the experiment under pressure from the Saami Council , which represents Indigenous groups in Finland, Russia, Norway and Sweden.

“There’s a fair number of people who think there shouldn’t be research [on geoengineering], and these early experiments have become a proxy battleground for this larger question about how to think about the development of these technologies,” said David Keith, who now directs the Climate Systems Engineering Initiative at the University of Chicago and used to be involved in the Harvard geoengineering experiment.

Local fights over small experiments like the one in Alameda are likely to define the future of geoengineering research in the coming years, Keith said.

“This generation is not likely to be the one that makes decisions about actually deploying these technologies,” he said. “Those will only get made in 20 years by the next generation. Right now, our only real choice is: Do we research them or do we not?”
