While the racing heritage of the J/Boats-TPI partnership is legendary and their genuine contribution to the Joy Of Sailing enormous, nothing yet produced by that design-and-build team punctuates those achievements as impressively as the new J/160. In today’s world of better equipment, more exotic materials and truly sophisticated design, stretching the parameters of the old “performance cruiser” is long overdue. This boat gives modern sailors racing and cruising performance without requiring the burden of a large crew. On a more subjective level, all in a glance she is clean, simple, elegant, comfortable, fast and capable.
With modern composite construction, a typically easily-driven J/Boat hull form and a very low center of gravity, the 160 needs less sail area for comparable performance than do other sailboats in the 50-foot-plus size range. This translates into lower winch loads, easier sail management, more relaxed cruising and racing.
The standard Hall triple-spreader aluminum rig (a Hall carbon fiber rig is a tempting, albeit expensive, option) carries a large, low-aspect-ratio mainsail and a comparatively small, high-aspect-ratio foretriangle. This big-main/small-headsail combination is efficient for any kind of sailing and easily managed by a diminutive crew. For relaxed cruising or offshore work, a furling #3 jib is recommended in conjunction with the main. The jib is a cinch to tack, and trimming the main with the 6:1 Lewmar Ocean Racing mainsheet traveler system is equally unconstrained.
On deck and in the cockpit the hardware and winches are arranged so that almost all sail handling, hoisting and trimming can be done easily from a safe position aft. Sitting outboard of the large (66″) wheel gives the helmsperson an excellent view forward, and this driver’s seat actually becomes more comfortable as the boat heels. Leaving the helm station to go forward in the cockpit is a step-up-and-go-around-the-wheel affair, potentially awkward in dicey sailing conditions. All the way aft, the scoop transom makes for convenient boarding from the water, dinghy or dock. Up on the bow, a large storage locker with an overhead deck hatch provides room to stow sails, ground tackle, lines, fenders and errant gear.
Setting a spinnaker on a 53-foot sailboat without a full crew was never at the top of most people’s Must Do list. Enter the modern-day asymmetrical kite, a retractable pole disguised as a bowsprit, and a cockpit-operated snuffer system. On the 160, relaxed shorthanded spinnaker work becomes routine. And that’s without even going forward.
Belowdeck, the 160 is nothing short of elegant. The interior is offered in all-teak or all-cherry wood, with enough off-white laminate and trim to promote that open, spacious sensation. The layout emphasizes liveaboard and long-term cruising comfort, with pumps and machinery grouped in convenient, accessible locations for easy inspection and service.
Aft of the companionway to port and starboard are two staterooms, one accessible to the after head, sink and shower. The cabins are snug yet comfortable, with 48-inch wide berths and good available storage. Just forward of the companionway to port is a roomy J-shaped galley, with a double sink close to centerline and a gimbaled three-burner Force 10 stove outboard. Icebox/refrigerator capacity is vast (12.5 cubic feet), general storage is ample, the wraparound design of the galley, secure and safe.
The forward-facing nav station opposite the galley offers visible and protected space for mounting the latest yacht electronics. Extra-tall fiddles keep charts, books and pencils from ending up on the floor; a curved, contoured seat keeps the navigator from doing the same. The main saloon features a settee berth to starboard and a full-size pilot berth outboard of the oval dining settee to port. All the way forward is the owner’s cabin — truly a “stateroom” — with a 56″ x 78″ double berth, shelves, storage and hanging lockers, a vanity, a private head with shower…the works.
Engine and mechanical installations are excellent. Seacocks are tagged, all plumbing hoses below the waterline are double clamped, access to machinery — engine, shaft, optional generator, watermaker and so on — is handy, and ventilation to those areas is good. A turbo-charged 88-horsepower Yanmar connected to a 22-inch Martec folding prop delivers a comfortable and quiet cruising speed of 8 knots plus. Tankage is formidable at 95 gallons for fuel and 162 for fresh water.
Construction emphasizes light weight by way of TPI’s signature SCRIMP resin-infusion molding technique. Hull and deck are cored with Baltek end-grain balsa, with solid glass at critical structural junctures such as where the chainplates attach. All bulkheads are tabbed on both sides. Hull-to-deck features an in-turned flange sealed with structural sealant and fastened mechanically every four inches.
The hull is designed with a fine entry and short overhangs, moderate topside flare, and a low-wetted-surface underbody. The rudder is a balanced high-aspect spade. Two antimony-hardened cast lead keels are offered, the deeper of which is 11,000 pounds and draws 8’10″, the other 12,000 pounds and 7’0″. They are externally mounted. The non-dimensional ratios point to a lot of sailpower and relatively light displacement, and the limit of positive stability according to the designer is a whopping 140 degrees (a respectable 125 degrees by IMS calculations).
Sailing the 160 is every bit as fun as advertised. Hoisting the main takes a tolerable amount of effort (unless you spring for the electric winch option), and from there you simply pick a direction and go fast. Extending the bowsprit, setting the kite, jibing it and dousing it are simple. Behavior on all points of sail is truly refined; the platform feels as stable as something much larger, but the response to helm, trim and tweaking is very apparent.
The base price of the J/160 is advertised at $497,550, with an estimated sailaway figure, depending upon your choice of equipment, sails and rig, in the $550,000 to $700,000 range. If you require quality, performance, elegance, safety, a yacht built to exceed the Offshore Yacht Service standards of ABS, and a 10-year hull warranty against blistering, then this boat has to be at the top of the list. Rod Johnstone has expanded the parameters of the “performance cruiser” genre, and TPI has built the vessel strong enough to prove that lighter can be better.

With new CEO Franco Fusignani at the helm, the Italian shipyard Benetti is well on its way to offering even higher-quality builds and lower production costs—but one thing that won’t change is the striking craftsmanship the venerable brand is known for. Elaldrea+, a 160-foot superyacht that was delivered to the owner last month, is a prime example of that precise, built-to-last craftsmanship.

The sleek, streamlined exterior lines were envisioned by Argentinean architect Horacio Bozzo, while the interiors were designed by the Benetti Style Department. In addition to a steel hull, Elaldrea+ has a pearl-white aluminum superstructure painted with silver accents. Depending on the angle of the light hitting it, an iridescent effect enhances or hides the design details completely.
Several of the spaces were created to be used during navigation, including the large beach club , which comes fully equipped with a bar, sauna, sofa, and a rear door that opens to a swim platform. On the upper deck, a swimming pool in the bow can be filled with seawater, while an indoor lounge is outfitted with a television, bar tables and stools, and a gaming room with a private bath that was specially designed by the owner. A second freshwater swimming pool is available on the sun deck next to a bar, barbecue area, and table that can seat up to 10 guests.
Four guest cabins (including two VIP cabins and two double cabins with French and single beds), crew quarters, the engine room, and the stern garage make up the lower deck. The day zone leads to the kitchen (which has a pantry with two wine cellars), an office, and the owner’s suite. Decked out in marble and wood, the owner’s suite is home to his-and-her dressing rooms and baths as well as a balcony.
Elaldrea+ has a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 10 knots, making it well-suited for long cruises.

Blue Coast 160’ - A green trimaran… that’s retractable!
Article published on 17/07/2023
By Kim Wellington
published in n°SP20 aug. / sept.
Naval architect Jean-Jacques Coste has come up with an astonishing 160-foot (48 m) trimaran intended to be built in carbon.
Create a notification for "Trimaran"
We will keep you posted on new articles on this subject.
In addition to energy management and production systems that make it possible to do away with using fossil fuels for most situations, by drawing on the powerful BMS lithium-ion battery pack, the BLUE COAST 160 features folding linkage arms to reduce its beam from 75 feet (23 m) when under way to 36 feet (11 m) in harbor or at anchor. This “reasonable” width, combined with a draft of less than 6 feet (2 m), will allow this ambitious trimaran to stop in areas that would obviously normally be off-limits to a yacht of such beam... Seen from above, the arrowhead-shaped deck of the central hull is surprisingly reminiscent (albeit much more slender, due to its length) of the Allegro, a little 26-foot trimaran launched back in 1976...
Like most Catamaris® constructions, the BLUE COAST 160 is built as a prestigious triple-decked, one-off, adaptable to suit your preferences in terms of number and layout of cabins, interior fittings and furnishings. For example, there's a garage and platform designed to house, and transfer ashore, a car! An electric one, of course!
The BLUE COAST 160 is fully automated for optimum ease of use and the ultimate level of comfort. Builder: Catamaris Naval architect and design: Coste Design Length: 157’5” (48 m) Beam: 36’1”/75’9” (11/23.1 m) Draft: 5’10” (1.8 m) Sail area: 3,875 sq ft (360 m²) Max. speed under power: 15 knots Number of cabins: 9 including 3 crew cabins www.catamaris.com

Trimaran Sailing Yacht Blue Coast 160®
A truly sensational appearance:
This BLUE COAST 160` sailing trimaran mega yacht with 3 decks is a fusion of architecture, design, comfort, performance, luxury, economy and technology. The 48m long carbon fibre trimaran yacht was designed by world-renowned naval architect Jean-Jacques Coste.
Description
The BLUE COAST 160` has extendable side hulls. At sea, the overall width of 23 m then offers very stable sailing even in rougher seas. With the side hulls retracted, the yacht, which is only 11 m wide, finds suitable berths in marinas and harbours. The shallow draft allows anchoring close to the most beautiful beaches.
Read here an article about this stunning trimaran from Multihulls World magazine no. 191.
The energy concept is also revolutionary: all the energy required on board comes from renewable sources. Of course, the latest battery management system (BMS) technology with state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries is part of the overall concept. This means that exclusive ports can be entered with renewable energy. Additional requested energy can be generated by an optional hybrid propulsion system.
The customised luxurious interior design is also by Jean-Jacques Coste. Of course, a garage for the owner's car "matching" the yacht has also been thought of; it can get on and off the yacht via the retractable platform.
With a twinkle in the eye, here is a note on the term "yacht" : At the christening of the new "Brittania" by Queen Elizabeth II, a journalist asked why a vessel of 126 m length with a crew of 236 and 5.769 GRT could be be called a "yacht"? A member of the Royal Family gave him a convincing answer: "The use of the term yacht does not depend on the type, length, weight or size of the crew of a vessel, but on the status of the owner!"
Design according to your preferences
The design of the Blue Coast 160 can be adapted to your ideas as you desire in terms of length, width, number and layout of cabins, interior fittings and furnishings.
Manufacturing your Yacht
Under the constant supervision of Catamaris ® and Jean-Jacques Coste, your BLUE COAST 160 sailing trimaran will be built in a certified shipyard in Europe with many years of experience in successfully manufacturing numerous luxury Super- Yachts, multihulls and trimarans.

SEAWIND 1600
The 1600 passagemaker reflects our aspiration to create the ideal cruiser in every aspect: this is the ultimate offshore cruising catamaran., pointing ability & shallow draft, the ultimate offshore cruising catamaran.
Captive daggerboards, which don’t protrude through the deck, reduce maintenance and keep a clean deck that could otherwise prove hazardous offshore. Keeping these large foils captive also prevents windage aloft which can cause a catamaran at anchor to swing and swerve about her mooring. This approach conveniently maintains the aesthetic of the stunning Reichel Pugh design. The daggerboard lifting mechanism is run to a dedicated control in the cockpit, so there’s no need to rush forward and then cross the boat to raise the boards.
PERFORMANCE WITHOUT COMPROMISE
Comfort and performance are a trade-off discussed endlessly. The Seawind 1600 Passagemaker strikes this balance through the use of advanced build technologies and continuous weight-saving efforts. Strategically placed carbon fiber reinforcements throughout the structure, Kevlar reinforcement under the waterline and revolutionary daggerboard integration not only make the Seawind 1600 Passagemaker an extremely stiff and fast catamaran, but also gives her the beach ability that so many Seawind catamarans are renown for.
SHALLOW DRAFT
Through the use of Kevlar reinforced hulls with retracting daggerboards and rudders, the Seawind 1600 Passagemaker is safe on a sandy shoal. The minimum draft (with daggerboards and rudders up) is only 54cm – or 2ft 1 inches. That means the Seawind 1600 Passagemaker can enter protected anchorages and waterways inaccessible to almost any other cruiser on the market today.
Designed for extended ocean crossings, the Seawind 1600 Passagemaker has all of the cruising practicality you would expect from a new Seawind catamaran, but delivered on long and fast performance hulls.
High aspect deep retracting rudders and daggerboards offer performance and practicality - this catamaran sailboat tacks easily and is a nimble performer, but has a minimum draft of only 54cm with the foils raised.
At 52 foot, this Reichel Pugh designed performance cruiser offers sailors a true sailing experience whilst not sacrificing on safety or comfort. The Seawind 1600 Passagemaker has proven to be a world class catamaran capable of being sailed anywhere, by anyone.
The Seawind 1600 Passagemaker carries an exclusive interior full of the elegant finish work expected of a true thoroughbred sailing yacht.
A delightful light-oak interior oozes Italian style. The chic grey of the oak interior contrasts well with the modern walnut floor timbers. Soft LED lighting and quality sound system enhance the carefully planned atmosphere aboard.
Reichel Pugh design expertise, along with Seawinds 35 years of practical catamaran handling experience combine to create a yacht ideal for long extended cruising or live-aboard sailing.
Designed by world renowned naval architects Reichel Pugh, this 52-foot luxury catamaran is the perfect balance of cruising comfort and performance sailing.
With simple sailing systems, twin protected helms and a large open cockpit space, this blue water luxury cruising catamaran sets the standard for offshore sailing.
At 52 ft, our Seawind 1600 Passagemaker is the flagship of our range with a brief to be the “ultimate luxury offshore cruiser”. And after thousands of design hours, and thousands more in the early construction and testing phases, that work has been rewarded in a competition we hold in high regard.
SPECIFICATIONS

DUAL ENGINE CONTROLS
A second electronic engine control mounted at the stbd helm makes for easy maneuvering and makes the boat manageable from either helm.
SIDE CLEARS
These removable role up clears are an essential item for any blue water sailor. Attaching to the outboard side of both the port and stbd helms they allow skippers to remain warm and dry at the helm in even the worst of conditions whilst still allowing for easy access and use of the sail controls.
BATTERY LITHIUM UPGRADE (720AH)
Change from the traditional AGM battery system to a high capacity Lithium system from Mastervolt. This option not only upgrades the batteries but also modifies the entire charging system ensuring a total compatible system including upgraded mastervolt alternators and regulators, additional AGM start battery and DC/DC charging unit.
STORM JIB WITH FURLER
The storm jib is designed for use in winds too strong for the regular jib, typically in conditions 40kts and up. It provides just enough sail area to maintain directional stability.
#SW1600-OPT001
Carbon park avenue boom.
Very simply, the wings of the carbon fiber boom extend outwards to catch the mainsail as it is lowered. Lazy jacks ensure that the mainsail is captured within the confines of the recessed area of the boom deck and hides the bulk of the sail when moored. The sail cover is fit to the inboard groove of the track system installed on the inside perimeter of the boom top.
SATELITE PHONE/DATA WIFI ROUTER IRIDIUM GO
The Iridium GO! is a satellite wifi router/phone. Once installed in the boat the boat will have a wifi hotspot the same as any office/home and all devices (phones, computers, chartplotters, c-zone etc) can then easily be connected to the internet.
B&G forward Scan option
Explore poorly-chartered or unfamiliar waters confidently, avoid upcoming dangers or obstructions and set custom shallow depth alarms with B&G’s forward-looking sensor. With an effective range eight times the actual depth, ForwardScan® helps you avoid groundings or damage to keels and rudders while pinpointing the ideal spot for anchoring.
C-ZONE DIGITAL SWITCHING
The sleek CZone® touch screen digital switching system provides a lightweight sophisticated switching system enabelling control and monetoring of your vessel through the navigation tables touch screen display or through WiFi connection the system can also be controlled at the helm mounted chart plotter or wirelessly via tablet or smartphone.

Fatal boat crash launched woman into trees and threw man into water, Florida cops say
A body pulled from trees was among two discovered after a 21-foot boat crashed near southwest Florida’s Little Hickory Bay, according to investigators.
It happened around 3 p.m. Friday, March 15, not far from North Naples, about a 160-mile drive south from Tampa, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a news release.
“The vessel, carrying two occupants, was traveling north, passing red channel marker 14, when it’s starboard side ran into the mangrove trees, ejecting both passengers,” FWC officials said.
“The unmanned vessel remained in gear until it crashed into the mangrove shoreline, coming to a stop.”
Judy Eaton, 71, of Bonita Springs “was recovered from the mangrove trees where she was pronounced deceased,” officials said.
John Moulder, 71, of Naples, was airlifted by EMS to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Ft. Myers, “where he later died from his injuries,” officials said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol may have been a factor, investigators said in the report.
Boaters who use the area regularly told WBBH the couple died at a turn known to be dangerous, but signs marking the hazard vanished during Hurricane Ian , which struck southwest Florida in September 2022.
“Sadly, I was not surprised,” boater Kevin Price told the station. “I had a conversation with another friend recently about this turn specifically, and some of the close calls I’ve seen at this spot.”
