Come Aboard Wild Hearts with Captain Zach Smith

Captain Zach Smith – also known as Captain Zach “Sparrow” – may not be a pirate, but he shares the love of wind, salt and sea that often lies in a sailor’s heart.

Zach is a homegrown ‘Bama boy raised in Auburn, Alabama. Alabama fans beware: Capt. Zach may make you walk the plank.

Feeling the pull to explore island life, Capt. Zach eventually moved to the Virgin Islands. He spent five years in St. John where he spent his spare time learning to sail, paddleboard, dive and wind surf. He loved it so much that when he finally headed back to Alabama, he sought out a job that would keep him on the water. His coastal home took some of the stress out of his search – at his first job interview he was told to sail a small Hobie Cat through the beach surf and back again. He sailed through with flying colors and has never looked back.

Today, Captain Zach spends his days sailing Wild Hearts around the spectacular waters of Orange Beach and Perdido Key. He knows the local waters and enjoys introducing people to his passion for sailing. He and his crew welcome you aboard and sincerely hope you have an adventure you’ll keep in your heart forever.

When asked why he sails Captain Zach answers, “Sailing gives me such freedom; I feel at home on the water, and it is never the same twice.”

Sail away with Deckhand Brittney Vandiver

Brittney Vandiver joined the crew of the Wild Hearts for the 2020 season. Although relatively new to the Wild Hearts, she earned her status as a boating and tourism industry veteran long ago. The daughter of a boat captain, life on the water came naturally. Brittney could be found tagging along with her father at the marina while still in diapers. She began her journey as a deckhand in 1999 at the age of 12 by helping her parents start a dining and dolphin cruise business in Orange Beach, Alabama. She will be entering her 24th season in 2022!

Brittney is married with two children. Avery, her son, is 11, and her daughter, Haley, is 7. Her husband, Daniel, unsurprisingly is also a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain. Brittney was born and raised on the Gulf Coast. Boating and the Gulf of Mexico are deeply rooted parts of her life. Helping guests experience the joy of boating, and the beauty of the Gulf Coast is what makes her the happiest.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are excellent areas to sail from. The Alabama Coastal region is pristine and the waters are teeming with sea life. There are many options for getting out onto the water and each has its own benefit. Chartered tours allow you to see hidden pockets or special local gems. The cruise captains also know where the action is—whether it’s dolphin sightings, diving or the best fishing holes.

While sailing is an activity in of itself, there are also many other options during your time on Gulf waters.

Fishing   – Fishing is prolific in Alabama's Gulf Coast. It’s also a straightforward process to find out about regulations, permits, what’s in season, and more. If you go the  fishing charter  route, guides will provide you with the information you need to kick off a successful trip. Some popular “catches” include grouper, shrimp, crab, king mackerel and mullet.

Diving  – It’s a true adventure to explore what lives under the surface.  Diving  is a popular sailing activity in the Gulf Shores area. During a sailing/diving excursion, you can check out wrecks, sea life and other treasures hidden in the depths.

Captain Truelove & crew made this the most fun & magical evening intercoastal excursion ever! Dolphins (70 make their home here) were everywhere! We saw them feeding & they even suprised us by surfing in our boat's wake! I think our Captain conspired with them to entertain us. Crew members gave each of us 38 passengers special attention, especially the two youngest passengers. Photo ops included great blue herons, a baby dolphin, family photos, intercoastal marsh grasses, pines and inlets. Drinks and snacks came out early, and the adventure on Wolf Bay ended with a gorgeous sunset & new moon! Did I mention great music, singing and trivia, along with a most knowledgeable and charming crew! The offer a discount if you return, and your wrist band gets you more local dining discounts. The Explorer was truly a special trip.

When planning our trip to Orange Beach there were several cruises to choose from. We decided on this sail and we were glad we did. Crew is awesome. You get a table and chair with options to buy drinks both hard or soft including water. The sail was smooth, great music and wonderful photo ops of a beautiful sunset. Highly recommended!

The staff was extremely knowledgeable about dolphins and many other native animals in the area. They know how to locate the dolphins very quickly and we were able to watch them for quite some time. It was a great experience and I would recommend to anyone wanting to see the dolphins and nature.

We took our 4 children on this cruise. They were very informative and interacted with all of the kids. They had drinks and snacks for kids and adults. (Try the dizzy dolphin) it's well worth the money and we will be taking my mom when we go back next spring break!

My wife and I truly loved our experience. We saw many dolphins. We highly recommend this cruise to families with children and older adults as well. The crew and captain were highly enthusiastic and very entertaining. We will definitely book another trip the next time we come down.

Morning - Afternoon - Sunset Cruise Trips Available Daily

We offer 2 – 3 – 4 – 5, and 6-hour tours at approximately $175 per hour for up to 6 people. If you have more than 6, we can normally charter a 2nd boat with the additional cost being the same as the above pricing for the second boat.

A 2-hour excursion for 6 people costs $62.50 per person if you have 6 people in your group, $375 total.

The price includes the boat, captain, fuel, a large cooler with ice, and bottled water.

All bait, tackle and fishing license are provided.  You provide your food, drinks and a good fishing attitude.  Soft drinks, beer, water and snacks are available at the Marina’s Dock Store.

Typical trip options include:

• Nearshore trolling for Spanish & King Mackerel
• Offshore trolling for Wahoo, Tuna, Dolphin & Marlin
• Bottom fishing for Snapper, Trigger, Grouper & Amberjack

Executive & Specialty Charters

These charters are usually for small groups of 6 or less that want to have the boat to themselves or do not want a full day or 1/2 day aboard a commercial charter boat.

Tournament fishing, cobia fishing, fly fishing, bottom fishing, sight seeing, and other special events such as the 4th of July Fireworks display, Blue Angels Air Show, etc. are activities that comprise the Executive and Specialty Charter division. These charters are usually aboard private boats.
