Rupert Murdoch reportedly fell and sustained serious injuries while aboard his son's yacht in 2018, an incident that led the media mogul to spend a night in a European hospital parking lot, waiting under a tent until he could be flown back to the US.
A lengthy new report from Vanity Fair detailed several previously unreported health scares experienced by the 92-year-old CEO and chairman of News Corporation, including a broken back from the yacht fall, a torn Achilles, seizures, and bouts with pneumonia and COVID-19.
Citing sources close to the family, Vanity Fair reported that the media mogul and his then-wife Jerry Hall were on Lachlan Murdoch's yacht in January 2018 when Rupert fell while using the bathroom overnight, waking Hall, who found him in pain on the floor.
Related stories
The yacht, which was sailing near Guadeloupe, reportedly docked at the nearest island to take Murdoch to the hospital, per Vanity Fair.
However, the hospital on the island was allegedly closed due to a recent fire, so Murdoch was forced to spend a night in the hospital parking lot on a gurney under a tent until a family plane arrived to fly him back to the states to receive medical care.
Sources close to the family said he was in critical condition, and "kept almost dying," according to Vanity Fair.
The incident reportedly left Murdoch bedridden for months, during which he was spoon fed by Hall as he recovered. According to the report, Murdoch later tore an Achilles tendon after tripping over a box in March 2019, leaving him wheelchair-bound. He also reportedly spent time in the hospital with pneumonia and seizures during this convalescent period.
Murdoch was said to be much more careful during the pandemic than Fox News hosts were advising the public to be, and people close to the family told Vanity Fair that he and Hall stayed home for months at a time in 2020. Murdoch was also one of the first people to receive a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as Fox hosts criticized preventative measures like the vaccines and masks.
Despite his precautions, Murdoch was reportedly diagnosed with COVID-19 just days before his granddaughter's wedding in July 2022, and appeared "very weak," with Lachlan "holding him up to get from place to place," a guest told Vanity Fair.
Representatives for Murdoch and Hall did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Rupert Murdoch is recovering at home after suffering a serious back injury. The media mogul was hospitalized after taking a fall while sailing earlier this month, Variety has confirmed.
The 86-year-old head of 21st Century Fox fell and was rushed off the boat by a helicopter, according to Vanity Fair , while vacationing on his son Lachlan’s yacht in the Caribbean earlier in January.
In a short note to senior executives, Murdoch said he would be working from home for a few weeks.
“I hope you all are having a great start to 2018. I suspect it has been better than mine,” he wrote late last week, noting he “suffered a painful back injury” as the result of a sailing accident. “While I am well on the road to recovery, I have to work from home for some weeks.” He told executives they could expect to hear from them via phone, email, and text.
A spokesman for 21st Century Fox declined to comment on Murdoch’s condition.
Murdoch, who also has a hand in running Fox News Channel, is in the midst of selling his media empire’s film and television assets to Disney for $52.4 billion in a historic merger. He is also the executive chairman of News Corp., the publishing side of the Murdoch business that was split off from entertainment and media operation in 2013. His sons, James and Lachlan, are 21st Century Fox’s CEO and executive chairman, respectively.
In 2000, Murdoch was diagnosed with prostate cancer, from which he has fully recovered.

Rupert Murdoch suffered a serious back injury while vacationing on his son Lachlan’s yacht in the Caribbean earlier this month, three sources familiar with the incident told Vanity Fair. The 86-year-old media mogul was helicoptered off the boat and was, until recently, recovering in a Los Angeles hospital, one of the sources said. The incident is said to have happened shortly after the New Year’s holiday.
Last Friday night, Murdoch sent an email to his senior management informing them of the accident: "I hope you all are having a great start to 2018. I suspect it has been better than mine," he wrote, according to a source who's seen the email. "I am writing to tell you that last week I had a sailing accident and suffered a painful back injury. While I am well on the road to recovery, I have to work from home for some weeks. In the meantime, you’ll be hearing from me by email, phone and text!"
A 21st Century Fox spokesperson declined to comment.
Murdoch’s hospitalization comes at a delicate moment for his media empire 21st Century Fox, as the company plans to sell its film and television assets to Disney in a $52.4 billion deal. (Murdoch is not selling Fox News.) The mogul has suffered health scares before, most notably a prostate-cancer diagnosis in 2000, from which he fully recovered. Murdoch has maintained he intends to live forever. His mother passed away in 2012, just shy of her 104th birthday.

The incident comes at a busy time for Murdoch as his media empire reshapes. Murdoch is selling 21st Century Fox’s film and television assets to Disney in a $52.4 billion deal. Much of the restructuring enables Murdoch to concentrate more heavily on newspapers and Fox News. Lachlan Murdoch is widely expected to succeed his father in the newspaper arm and in Fox News.
In 2014, Rupert Murdoch sold his £18m sailing yacht less than four months after it went onto the market. The boat was designed by the Italian shipyard Perini Navi and sleeps up to 12.

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch injures back while yachting
Rupert Murdoch, the executive chairman of 21st Century Fox, suffered a serious back injury after a fall while yachting, his company confirmed on Wednesday.
A Fox spokeswoman said that Murdoch is still active and working despite the injury and he is resting at his vineyard just outside of Los Angeles.
Murdoch was injured while taking a New Year vacation on his son Lachlan's yacht in the Caribbean, according to Vanity Fair , which first reported the news.
In a memo sent to senior executives last week, Murdoch said he had suffered a painful back injury in a "sailing accident" and that he would be working from home for a few weeks. "In the meantime, you'll be hearing from me by email, phone and text!" he wrote.
At 86, Murdoch is busier than ever. He not only has an active hand in running Fox News Channel, he also runs the parent company 21st Century Fox in conjunction with his sons, James Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch.
And Fox is in the midst of selling large portions of the company, including its movie studio and its international content and distribution assets, to Disney. Murdoch also runs a newspaper empire as executive chairman of News Corporation.

Murdoch, 86, was reportedly in the Caribbean on his son Lachlan’s yacht around the beginning of the year when the injury occurred, and taken from the boat to a hospital by helicopter.
The News Corp billionaire’s injury was first reported in Vanity Fair , which described an email from Murdoch sent to senior executives at the company.
“I hope you all are having a great start to 2018. I suspect it has been better than mine,” he wrote, according to the magazine’s source.

Murdoch, the patriarch of both News Corp and 21st Century Fox, is still working remotely, according to a message he sent to Fox executives.
But he will be home-bound for an unknown number of weeks.
Murdoch described the incident as a sailing accident that resulted in a painful back injury.
A person close to Murdoch confirmed that the accident happened while he was on his son Lachlan Murdoch's yacht in the Caribbean.
Rupert, 86, was taken off the yacht by helicopter for treatment, the person said, and he is now recovering at home.
"While I am well on the road to recovery, I have to work from home for some weeks," Murdoch wrote to colleagues in early January. The email was obtained by CNNMoney.
The back injury was first reported by Vanity Fair's Gabriel Sherman , who wrote that Murdoch was hospitalized after the accident.
A spokesperson for Murdoch declined to comment.

Rupert Murdoch was hospitalized earlier this month after suffering a painful back injury in a sailing accident onboard his son Lachlan's yacht while vacationing in the Caribbean, it has been revealed.
The 86-year-old revealed the accident in an email to his senior management team last week in which he explained why he would be working from home.
On Wednesday, Vanity Fair cited multiple sources who confirmed the accident and Murdoch's hospitalization.
They said Murdoch had to be airlifted off Lachlan's $30million boat to be taken to hospital and that he was only recently discharged. His wife Jerry Hall was with him at the time.
Murdoch is now at home where he will work for the coming weeks.

Murdoch is believed to have been on his son Lachlan's yacht, the Sarissa - a $30million, 140ft sailing yacht which has six bedrooms and is what the family uses to holiday on regularly. It is pictured in Sydney in 2013
21st Century Fox declined to comment when approached on Wednesday afternoon.
Jerry's model daughter Georgia May was sharing social media photographs from a tropical destination around the time of the accident, as was Murdoch's second-oldest daughter Grace.
The family is known to decamp to St Barths every year in late December to ring in the New Year.

Rupert Murdoch injured in shock boating accident
- 05 Apr 2019
Rupert Murdoch has been injured in a shock boating accident.
Rupert and his wife Jerry Hall were enjoying an outing on his son Lachlan's yacht Sarrisa in Saint Barts.
As the media mogul attempted to make his way to the bathroom in the middle of the night, he suffered a fall.
He was later airlifted from the Caribbean to a hospital in Los Angeles.
The incident left Rupert bedridden with a broken vertebrae and a spinal hematoma.
Murdoch's children were left in a panic following the near-fatal fall as his wife Jerry told the children to 'make peace' with their father with his life in jeopardy.
Doctors quickly performed a successful operation just weeks after Murdoch and Bob Iger agreed to the sale of Fox assets to Disney.

Rupert Murdoch was hospitalized in January after suffering an accident on his son Lachlan's yacht, a spokesman for the media mogul confirmed to The Hill. In an email to senior colleagues last week, the 86-year-old executive co-chairman of 21st Century Fox and acting CEO of Fox News addressed his accident, explaining that he suffered a "painful back injury" while on son Lachlan's yacht. Murdoch said he was taken by helicopter off the boat to a nearby hospital in Los Angeles, where he was recovering until recently. The accident was first reported by Vanity Fair. His accident and hospitalization comes as Murdoch plans to sell 21st Century Fox's TV and film assets to the Walt Disney Company, a $52.4 billion deal that would not include Fox News. The conservative billionaire has been in headlines in recent weeks after he reportedly called President Trump a "f---ing idiot" in quotes from the newly published book about the Trump administration, "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House," by author Michael Wolff. Maybe this will force him to stop taking such an active role in fucking over the country. Fox News has somehow gotten even worse under his leadership since Ailes left.

But, ironically, Trump highlights a deeper problem at Fox news. In the post-Roger Ailes era, the network doesn't have a programming Svengali to develop new story lines. "There's absolutely no direction," one Fox host told me. Without Ailes's daily talking points to guide them, producers are freer than ever before to program their shows, and the surest path to ratings success is airing stories that appeal to Trump's most fervent supporters. Fox may be Trump's safe space, but Trump is Fox's safe space, too. It's a circular feedback loop. According to conversations in recent days with current and former Fox executives, producers, and hosts, Trump looms almost as large in the minds of employees as Ailes did. Fox hosts regularly get calls from Trump about segments he likes—or doesn't. "When you worked at Fox, you knew that at any moment Roger Ailes was watching. Every day was like a job interview with Ailes. Now it's the same way for Trump," says a veteran Fox News contributor. According to sources, Trump doesn't explicitly dictate talking points the way Ailes did, but over time, the effect can be similar. "What he usually does is he'll call after a show and say, 'I really enjoyed that,'" a former Fox anchor told me. "The highest compliment is, 'I really learned something.' Then you know he got a new policy idea." But knowing Trump always could be tuning in means the network is being programmed for an audience of one. "He has the same embattled view as a typical Fox viewer—that 'the liberal elites hate me; they're trying to bring me down,'" an executive said. This dynamic makes it extremely complicated to cover the administration's near-constant conflagrations. "They don't want to see stuff about Michael Wolff. It's depressing," one staffer said, speaking about how the network struggled to cover the frenzy around Fire and Fury. One sure strategy has been to follow Trump's lead and continue attacking the Clintons. Since becoming president, Trump has tweeted about Hillary Clinton about 70 times. Trump brought up Hillary multiple times at a joint press conference with the Norwegian prime minister on January 10. One Fox staffer explained that the anti-Hillary segments rate almost higher than anything else the network programs. "The audience eats up anything about Hillary," the staffer said. Fox will soon debut a new weekly documentary series called Scandalous. The subject of the first episode: the Clintons. Click to expand... Click to shrink...
It may seem counter-intuitive, but it's likely that if Ailes was still running Fox, the network wouldn't function as state TV. While Ailes was a committed right-winger—I've reported how he privately wanted Navy SEALs to shoot immigrants crossing the southern border—he was smart enough to recognize that Fox's power was maximized if the network appeared to be fair and balanced, even though it wasn't. For instance, in the run-up to the 2000 election, Fox ran a story about George W. Bush's previous drunk-driving arrest. (It's impossible to see Fox airing a similarly damaging story today.) When Fox got heat for helping to create the Tea Party during Obama's first term, Ailes told producers to tone down the Tea Party coverage.
