Cape Town builders Southern Wind turbo-charge their SW94 Kiboko with an all-carbon lightweight shell and go-faster appendages. David Glenn talks to them about early trials

“A capable helmsman will have a smile from ear to ear,” said Andrea Micheli, Commercial Manager at Pegaso Srl & Southern Wind ‘s marketing representative, as he described early sail trials of the company’s new Reichel Pugh-designed 94-footer/29m Kiboko .

Studying the pictures of the yacht sailing with just a staysail and a reefed main, you could see she was revelling in the conditions off Cape Town, where the breeze topped 30 knots, enabling the 52-ton fast cruiser to touch speeds in the high teens. This fully fitted-out superyacht clearly has 20-knot plus potential in surfing conditions.

More experienced With racy appendages and a very short chord keel weighing 18 tons and drawing a substantial 14ft 9in/4.5m, this powerful yacht is designed for “yachtsmen with more experience,” said Micheli. He explained that to get the best out of the yacht she needed really close attention in terms of sail trim and steering.

“Just a few centimetres means she could be over-trimmed – she is very sensitive!” he explained.

Reichel Pugh’s VPP calculations show that in six knots of true breeze Kiboko should be capable of 8.34 knots hard on the wind and in 14 knots of breeze with the wind angle at 140° she will be sailing at 14.34 knots.

With her all-carbon hull, EC6+ carbon rigging, carbon wheel and removable bowsprit, Koboko 2 is a lightweight flyer.

Considering Southern Wind have based their success on the performance bluewater cruiser, designed to cross oceans quickly and comfortably, the new yacht would seem marginally out of kilter with the company’s philosophy. However, like other builders – notably Nautor’s Swan and Oyster – the power of the brand regatta has certainly done no harm to Southern Wind’s sales, and the challenging conditions off Porto Cervo during their last two summer regattas have provided excellent sport. The natural consequence of these events is a more competitive spirit and a demand for faster boats.

The owner of Kiboko is a repeat client, his first yacht from Southern Wind being the only Reichel Pugh-designed SW72 produced. The new SW94 is similar in concept to the Pugh- designed SW78, of which five have been built, including the competitively successful All Smoke and Whisper, ex-Farniente.

More aggressive

From the moment we set eyes on Kiboko in her new Cape Town build hall 18 months ago, we could see Southern Wind wanted to sharpen performance. The yacht’s all-carbon, epoxy resin-infused shell means that the all-up light displacement measures 52 tons, which is exactly 10 tons lighter than the SW100, of which 12 examples have been launched.

Southern Wind have a state of the art manufacturing facility on the outskirts of Cape Town with a mobile oven and three- part mould for the 94’s hull, which enables more effective resin infusion and easier access to the surface of the mould. Hull and deck are designed with five different thicknesses of core foam and precision placement of stiffening material. The outer skin includes Kevlar for impact resistance in vulnerable areas.

The SW94 is relatively narrower in the beam, at 21ft 10in/6.66m, than her predecessors and her appendages are more performance-orientated – “more aggressive,” as Andrea Micheli put it – than any previous Southern Wind design. The rudder stock and quadrant are both built in pre-preg carbon.

“With a very short keel chord length, the SW94 becomes more challenging to sail at slow speeds,” added Micheli.

The pictures show Kiboko sailing with a carbon Vectran Quantum main, but the racing suit will be North 3DL. Southern Spars have recently acquired Nordic Spars, previous spar builder of choice, so the decision to use Southern’s carbon spars and EC6+ carbon rigging was a straightforward one.

The other obvious go-faster feature is a removable bowsprit for setting code and A sails, and to keep the lightweight theme going the headstay furler is a carbon profile.

The likelihood is that once the yacht has completed the 7,000-mile delivery to the Mediterranean on her own bottom, she will take part in the Palma Vela in Mallorca in May, possibly the Maxi Yacht Rolex regatta held in Sardinia in early September and Les Voiles de St Tropez in October.

Nauta Yachts’ input

Like most Southern Wind yachts, Kiboko benefits from Nauta Yacht Design’s overall concept and interior and exterior styling. In the accommodation the owner’s suite is forward with a twin guest cabin just aft and to starboard. There’s further guest accommodation abaft the main saloon before reaching the four-berth crew area, galley, navigation and monitoring station.

With sleeping accommodation for just four in the forward part of the yacht, there’s an unusually large amount of space afforded to the main saloon, plus what Southern Wind refer to as a TV lounge/studio located to port and on the same level as the saloon. The result is a huge open living area, a Nauta Yachts hallmark that works well aboard Southern Wind boats.

The owner of this yacht was keen to have excellent engine and machinery space access and this has been achieved by dedicating a bigger area than normal and providing side access through bulkheads.

An issue with an all-carbon hull and deck shell is acoustic insulation and Southern Wind have worked hard to ensure noise is not a nuisance. What Andrea Micheli referred to as ‘soft bonding’ of the interior furniture to the hull stringers and other landings keeps noise low and other sound-deadening material has been installed around the machinery space.

With her flat run aft and wide after sections, there is more wave ‘slap’ under the transom, according to Micheli, although with the guest accommodation forward this is something the permanent crew will need to live with rather than the owner!

Southern Wind, whose large factory expansion coincided with worldwide recession (see Supersail World, April 2009), have a number of yachts in build, including a second SW94, two 100s/30.5m and a 102/31m which currently has no client.

Following the success achieved with the SW 78 footer mini-series, Southern Wind decided to implement its production with another and yet faster cruiser-racer: the Southern Wind 94 (SW 94).

The great racing results gained by the 78 footers were good reasons to once again appoint Reichel Pugh Design and Nauta Design to the new challenging project, the Southern Wind 94 (SW 94). (Sailing yacht WHISPER won the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2009 in the Mini Maxi R/C class and finished in the prestigious Rolex Fastnet Regatta 5th overall on IRC class out of almost 300 boats, S/Y ALLSMOKE was first in the Mini Maxi IRC class in Maxi Rolex Cup 2007, and Sail yacht SOUTHERN STAR won the Boat International Superyacht Regatta in 2008 in the cruising division).

8 Fascinating Facts About ‘Kokomo,’ the Lightning-Fast 192-Foot Sailing Superyacht

The 192-footer has a 242-foot-high mast and spinnaker half the size of a football field. but it's so automated it can be sailed by two people., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Sailing Superyacht Kokomo

The 192-foot Kokomo was the second largest sloop in the world when it launched from New Zealand’s Alloy Yachts shipyard in 2010. It remains the largest fast-cruising sloop available for charter. The yacht’s commissioning owner Lang Walker (who died in January 2024) was a seasoned sailor who gave all three of his yachts the same name.

The first was a 131-foot sloop, which Walker replaced five years later with a 171-footer. The same day he took delivery of his 171-foot sloop, he placed an order for the third and final 192-foot Kokomo, which he planned to use for racing and cruising around the world. He also kept the same design team for all three yachts, with exterior and naval architecture by Ed Dubois and interior by UK’s RWD.

The reference to the yacht’s name has had different explanations over the years, ranging from the pseudonym of a composer whose music Walker played as a child to a nod to the Beach Boys’s song from their 1988 album Still Cruisin’ , which references a fictional utopian island called Kokomo. The island fantasy was brought to life in 2011 when Walker acquired a private island in Fiji’s Great Astrolabe Reef and named it Kokomo .

Here are eight unknown facts about one of the most game-changing sailing yachts on the water.

You’re Going to Need a Bigger Boom

kiboko sailing yacht

When Kokomo was launched, she was the second-largest sloop in the world and carried the largest set of sails made by Doyle Sails in New Zealand. The 23,971-square-foot asymmetric spinnaker is half the size of a professional football field, while the 9,688-square-foot mainsail needs a crane to lift it. Because of the gargantuan size of the sails, the designers entered a new era of spar and winch design, having to “reinvent” the deck equipment—winches, mast, boom, rigging and sails—to cope with the 31.6-ton load on the genoa sheet and 32-ton load on the main sheet clew. The 244-foot carbon mast is the largest ever made by Southern Spars.

A Hidden Lifting Keel

kiboko sailing yacht

The yacht’s 130-ton lifting keel is one of its most impressive features, though it’s largely left to the imagination. The interior layout is carefully designed so that the keel structure remains hidden. Dubois Naval Architects positioned the keel box to come above the main deck, serving as a partial separation between the bridge and the main salon (see inset). Kokomo was only the second yacht to be fitted with a lifting a keel, the first being 246-foot M5 (ex-Mirabella V), the world’s largest single-masted sailing yacht. This innovative design shortens Kokomo’s 28.5-foot draft when the keel is fully extended, to just 15 feet for shallow waters.

Fast-Track Sailing

kiboko sailing yacht

Kokomo was one of the first yachts to be fitted with a hydraulic batt-car system for furling the mainsail, which has cars at each batten end that slot in an outer track on the mast. This alleviates a once-common issue where the luff tape or bolt rope on large sailing yachts became chaffed by the compression of the battens, which often caused the in-boom furling mainsails to fail. “When sailing Kokomo , especially when racing, I am completely impressed with the speed and efficiency of the hydraulic system,” says Kokomo ’s captain, Jeremy ‘Bear’ Wynne, who notes the yacht’s recorded top speed is a very impressive 22 knots. “The jib furlers are some of the fastest I have seen. There is absolutely no shortage of hydraulic power, even with multiple winches running on a jibe—a rarity on a big sailing yacht.”

Now You See It, Now You Don’t

kiboko sailing yacht

Kokomo might be big on technology, but never at the expense of design. The wheelhouse has fold-down computer screens that conceal the navigation equipment when not in use, converting to beautiful carbon counter tops. This design sleight of hand transforms a highly technical area into a tony lounge. It’s a theme that extends to the foredeck, where the yacht’s two tenders are concealed in dedicated lockers. There’s also a fully retractable tender crane that launches the tenders from either side of the boat but disappears out of sight when guests are using the Jacuzzi. “The designated deck lockers were an advanced feature at the time of her launch,” says Wynne, adding that another bonus is that diesel tanks are fully available. “The tenders can be fueled onboard before launching.”

It Takes Just A Few Good Sailors

kiboko sailing yacht

Kokomo can accommodate up to 10 crew in total, but theoretically it only takes two to sail—a helm person and a sail trimmer. That sounds almost impossible given the size and complexity of yacht. But all sails are controlled by joystick on the flybridge. And when the boat is in full-on racing mode, there are control stations on both sides, providing visibility of the sails. Thanks to the hydraulics system, the mainsail can be hoisted and lowered on a wireless remote control. Of course, maneuvers like stowing the massive genoa can never be automated. That’s a job for a half-dozen good sailors.

Art On Board

kiboko sailing yacht

The hallway that leads to the owner’s cabin is lined with a mosaic tapestry made from sea glass woven together with wire. Backlit to create an unusual effect, it’s just one of the eclectic works of art that decorates the interior. The main salon also has a stunning and colorful work of glass art as another example.

Interior Matters

kiboko sailing yacht

Kokomo is not all tech features. The yacht’s modern interiors combine dark wood floors and calming cream furnishings start in the main salon and continue across the five guest cabins. Penned by British studio Redman Whiteley Dixon, the design carefully wraps around the lifting keel without sacrificing or impeding on any interior guest space. The yacht accommodates up to 10 guests in a master suite, VIP, one double cabin and two twins. There are other accommodations for up to 10 crew. On the foredeck, the Jacuzzi brings another element of outdoor entertainment, bolstered by a sunken cockpit.

World Traveler

kiboko sailing yacht

The mandate issued by Walker was to create a yacht that was a “quantum leap forward” from his previous yachts, with superior sailing characteristics and guest comfort. The mast’s height is too tall to sail through the Panama or Suez Canals, which meant it would have to be designed to sail around Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope to reach the Caribbean and Mediterranean. The maiden voyage took the yacht from the New Zealand shipyard to Australia, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, and Fiji. It also spent time at Walker’s private island (pictured above), also named Kokomo. The vessel has since spent many years exploring the Caribbean and Med. It’s based in both regions during the respective cruising seasons, with charters available through Cecil Wright.

The reference to the yacht’s name has had different explanations over the years, ranging from the pseudonym of a composer whose music Walker played as a child to a nod to the Beach Boys’s song from their 1988 album Still Cruisin’, which references a fictional utopian island called Kokomo. The island fantasy was brought to life in 2011 when Walker acquired a private island in Fiji’s Great Astrolabe Reef and named it Kokomo.

Here are eight unknown facts about one of the most game-changing sailing yachts on the water.

You’re Going to Need a Bigger Boom
