11 men's yachting wardrobe essentials

Larusmiani swim shorts.

After more than a decade in the fashion wilderness, the camouflage print re-emerged in 2017, when it was spotted everywhere on the runway – from street-style favourites Off-White and Vetements to sartorial powerhouses Bottega Veneta and Cerruti. Since then, it has shown no sign of disappearing from the world’s wardrobes – you’ll find it on jackets, shirts, trousers, backpacks and more. That’s hardly surprising, since the camo pattern acts like a neutral and goes with pretty much everything. Wear it on deck this Caribbean season with these Larusmiani swimming shorts.

Ecoalf jacket

Spanish brand Ecoalf was founded by Javier Goyeneche to create clothes from recycled material and today it collects hundreds of tonnes of discarded plastic from the bottom of the Mediterranean to create cool outerwear – so far, it has recycled 70 million plastic bottles. This Tucson waterproof jacket is made with 100 per cent recycled nylon fashioned from discarded fishing nets.

Stefano Ricci trainers

Perfect for pairing with everything from summer shorts to a modern slim-cut suit, dress trainers are the new men’s wardrobe must-have and few do them better than Stefano Ricci. Founded on a 100 per cent made in Italy ethos, each pair is handcrafted in fine leather or crocodile skin, with inspiration taken from the eponymous designer’s Florentine heritage. Choose a bold blue hue for spring or, for something truly special, make use of the brand’s bespoke accessory service.

Loro Piana bomber

For most yacht owners and guests the Loro Piana brand needs no introduction. Whether it’s the Storm System gear for regatta-goers, highly sought after Vicuna wool knits, or breezy linen shirts, the chances are there’s something with a Loro Piana label on board wherever you’re sailing. And now you can add to your collection with this super soft cashmere and jersey hooded bomber – ideal for braving the worst of the winter elements.

J. M. Weston loafers

Founded in 1891 by Édouard Blanchard, JM Weston’s elegant loafers have been a staple of Parisian style for more than a century. Still handmade in the Limoges factory from which they originated, Weston’s ‘mocs’ became a cult hit in the 1960s when worn by rebel French Mods known as the “Bande du Drugstore”. New interpretations under current creative director Michel Perry remain primed for the modern wardrobe. This turmeric-hued pair is a case in point.

Brioni shirt

Founded in Rome in 1945, Brioni has been a trailblazer since it staged the first ever men’s fashion show, at the Palazzo Pitti, Florence in 1952. Now helmed by Australian creative director Justin O’Shea, the house’s booming bespoke and ready-to-wear lines are a perfect example of prized Italian craftsmanship. A case in point is this classically elegant fitted shirt – add a simple Brioni gold pin for unexpected edge at your next formal yacht dinner. Zoe Dickens

Tod's loafers

Todd Marchard

Diego Della Valle, the chairman and CEO of Tod’s, is a man who loves the sea. He also loves the mythology of American casualwear and sees this epitomised in the enduring style of one John Fitzgerald Kennedy. These two passions combine happily in the fact that since 1998 Della Valle has been the owner of Marlin , a boat that was for many years in the Kennedy family.

Della Valle’s forebears were shoemakers in the Marche region of Italy, where Tod’s is still based, and the company has been built on a combination of Italian craftsmanship and the relaxed weekend style of the US, which the young Della Valle saw while working there for his father’s shoe business. It struck him that, while Italians oozed style, it was based around formal wear, while the Americans dressed down to relax. Della Valle recognised in the humble driving shoe a perfect opportunity to express his new vision for an Italian casual lifestyle and created the now famous Tod’s moccasin, the Gommino. It has a sole covered with 133 rubber pebbles, or gommini. Since its launch in the 1970s, the model has been rendered in a multitude of versions in a variety of materials and colours, featuring various details.  Peter Howarth

Ralph Lauren shirt

Sean Gleason

There are few better suited to dress the aspirational world of yachting than Ralph Lauren. His curated mix of preppy youth, classic cuts and all-American appeal make his designs favourites for life at sea.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the brand’s signature chino. With a broad following, these trousers have cemented their place as the stylish choice for the wealthy at play. How to wear yours this summer? Keep things simple with a tailored white shirt and rolled cuff. Zoe Dickens

Persol sunglasses

Like many of the best designs, Persol sunglasses (from the Italian per il sole, meaning “for the sun”) were born out of necessity. In 1917, Turin photographer and optician Giuseppe Ratti began making eyewear for Italian air force pilots and Alpini soldiers fighting in the snowy Dolomites.

After the war, these goggles and later, sunglasses, with the famous Silver Arrow hinge, caught on among yachtsmen and petrolheads alike. By the 1960s, Jack Kennedy was wearing them and Marcello Mastroianni donned the classic Persol 649 in the 1961 comedy Divorce Italian Style . Seven years later, Steve McQueen ensured continued “cool factor”, when he wore the folding version of the 649, the 714, with striking cobalt-blue lenses, in The Thomas Crown Affair (1968). The 714 was (and is) made with natural cotton acetate, photopolarising lenses and flexing cylinders in the arm to create a more personalised fit. Chris Madigan

Turnbull & Asser jumper

Jonathan Glynn-Smith

The peacock of Jermyn Street, Turnbull & Asser, has always been known for its use of colour: little wonder that Picasso and Hockney have both been loyal customers. To achieve this, they use only the best cashmere, taken from the finest hand-combed underbelly fibres of Mongolian goats.

Each strand is individually dyed to ensure intensity of every pigment, and they are tightly knit to make sure each garment keeps its shape: vital for the world-weary traveller living out of a suitcase. The V-neck pictured here has a slim fit, ideal for wearing under a jacket on a cool breezy evening, or on its own when the deck gets chillier. Effortlessly stylish, wonderfully soft, and the perfect combination of lightness and warmth: this sweater is the ultimate companion for any chic seafaring connoisseur. Jane Fulcher

Organizing a fashion show is an exciting endeavor, and taking it a step further by hosting it on a luxurious yacht adds a touch of glamour and exclusivity. A yacht-based fashion show offers a unique experience for designers, models, and guests alike. The picturesque backdrop of the open sea and the elegance of a yacht create an unforgettable atmosphere. This article will provide the key steps to successfully organize a yacht-based fashion show, from planning and logistics to design and execution. So, let's set sail and discover how to create an extraordinary fashion event on the high seas.

Before setting sail, developing a clear concept for your yacht-based fashion show is essential. Start by determining the theme and style that best aligns with your brand or the designers you're showcasing. Next, consider the type of yacht that would complement the aesthetic, whether a sleek modern or classic vintage yacht. Additionally, think about the target audience and the overall experience you want to create.

Once you have a firm concept in mind, create a detailed plan. Define the timeline, budget, and scope of the event. Next, identify key stakeholders, including designers, models, hair and makeup artists, and sponsors. Consider collaborating with local fashion schools or agencies to find talented models interested in participating. Finally, ensure you have the permits and permissions to host the event in your chosen location.

Choosing the right yacht is crucial for a successful yacht-based fashion show. Consider factors such as size, layout, and amenities. The yacht should have enough deck space to accommodate a runway, seating area, and backstage area for the models. Opt for a yacht with open areas that provide unobstructed views for the audience and photographers.

Collaborate with  yacht charter companies that specialize in hosting events. They can advise on the best yacht options and assist with logistics, permits, and catering services. In addition, please pay attention to the technical aspects of the yacht, such as lighting and sound systems, to ensure they meet the requirements of a fashion show.

Transforming the yacht's deck into an enchanting runway is key to organizing a yacht-based fashion show. Work closely with a set designer to create a captivating runway design that complements the yacht's aesthetics and your chosen theme. Consider using materials that enhance the nautical ambiance, such as ropes, nets, and marine-inspired decorations.

Lighting is crucial in showcasing the designs and creating a mesmerizing ambiance. Collaborate with a lighting designer to craft a lighting scheme that accentuates the models and their outfits. Ensure the lighting is sufficient for the runway and the audience to enjoy the show.

To ensure an exceptional viewing experience for the guests:

  • Strategically arrange seating areas on the yacht.
  • Consider both the indoor and outdoor spaces, ensuring guests have comfortable seating and an unobstructed view of the runway.
  • Utilize the yacht's existing seating areas and augment them with additional seating options.

Consider incorporating lounge areas where guests can relax and socialize during breaks or after the show. Arrange these areas to encourage mingling and networking among attendees, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

Smooth logistics and efficient backstage management are essential for a seamless yacht-based fashion show. Coordinate with designers to ensure their collections are delivered and organized in advance. Establish a backstage area where models can change and prepare for their walks. Ensure the area has mirrors, clothing racks, and sufficient lighting. Hire professional hair and makeup artists who can work efficiently in a limited space.

To manage the logistics effectively:

  • Create a detailed schedule for the fashion show.
  • Allocate specific time slots for each designer and model, including rehearsal times.
  • Communicate the schedule to all involved parties to ensure everyone knows their roles and responsibilities.

It's also pivotal to consider the safety of the models and guests. Ensure that the yacht has proper security measures in place. Hire additional security personnel to maintain order and control access to restricted areas if necessary.

Promoting and marketing the yacht-based fashion show strategically is important to ensure a successful turnout. Use various marketing channels such as social media, email newsletters, and targeted advertisements. In addition, create visually appealing content showcasing the event's elegance and uniqueness. Collaborate with influencers, fashion bloggers, and local media outlets to generate buzz and increase exposure. Offer exclusive invitations to key industry professionals, fashion enthusiasts, and potential sponsors to attract a diverse and influential audience.

Consider organizing pre-event activities or press conferences to generate anticipation and media coverage. Engage with the local community and build partnerships with relevant businesses to expand your reach and create a memorable experience for all attendees.

A yacht-based fashion show is an extraordinary event that must be captured and documented. Hire professional photographers and videographers to preserve the essence of the show. They should be experienced in capturing fashion events, ensuring they can highlight the beauty of the yacht, the fashion designs, and the overall ambiance. Create a dedicated media area where photographers and videographers can view the runway and models. This area should offer a vantage point that allows them to capture the show's best moments.

After the event, curate the photographs and videos to create engaging content for your brand's website, social media platforms, and promotional materials. Share the most memorable moments of the fashion show with attendees, and encourage them to share their experiences on social media, thus extending the event's reach.

Organizing a yacht-based fashion show requires meticulous planning, attention to detail, and creative vision. From conceptualizing the event to selecting the perfect yacht and creating a captivating runway, every element contributes to an unforgettable experience. By focusing on logistics, backstage management, promotion, and documentation, you can ensure the smooth execution of the event.

Moreover, a yacht-based fashion show provides an unparalleled opportunity for designers to present their creations in a sophisticated and exclusive environment. So, set sail with creativity, passion, and a keen eye for detail, and create a fashion event that will leave a lasting impression.

When it comes to hosting a fashion show on a yacht, location plays a crucial role in creating an unforgettable experience for both the designers and attendees. Here are a few key considerations to keep in mind:

  • Scenic Backdrop: The location of the yacht is of utmost importance as it sets the stage for the entire event. Opt for picturesque coastal areas, secluded coves, or stunning harbors that offer breathtaking views. Imagine the glamour of models strutting down the runway against a backdrop of sparkling seas and majestic sunsets.
  • Accessibility: Ensure that the chosen location is easily accessible for attendees and industry professionals. A convenient dock and nearby transportation options can make the event more appealing and hassle-free.
  • Weather Conditions: Keep in mind the weather conditions and seasonal patterns of the location. A sunny and mild climate enhances the overall experience, allowing guests to enjoy the fashion show while basking in the warmth of the sun.
  • Size and Flexibility: Consider the size of the yacht to accommodate the runway and seating arrangements. A yacht with spacious deck areas and flexible layouts will allow for creative staging and optimal viewing angles for the audience.

With careful consideration of the location, a fashion show on a yacht can transform into an unforgettable and glamorous affair, leaving both designers and attendees in awe of the stunning surroundings.

When it comes to hosting a fashion show on a yacht, selecting the perfect vessel is vital in creating a mesmerizing experience for your guests. With numerous options available, finding the yacht that complements your unique style and captures the essence of your fashion brand can be an exciting adventure. Consider these key factors to guide you in choosing the ideal yacht for your fashion show:

  • Size and Layout: Evaluate the guest list and the expected number of models to ensure ample space for everyone. A yacht with a spacious deck and an open layout will provide the flexibility needed for the runway while accommodating the comfort of your guests.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Look for a yacht that reflects the atmosphere you want to create. Sleek and modern designs, luxurious interiors, and stunning exterior features can enhance the overall ambiance of your fashion show.
  • Onboard Facilities: Consider the amenities available on the yacht, such as changing rooms, sufficient electrical outlets, and lighting options. These features are crucial in ensuring a smooth and flawless execution of your fashion event.
  • Location and Scenic Views: Choose a yacht that offers breathtaking views that complement your fashion show. Whether it’s a dazzling city skyline, a serene coastline, or an exotic destination, the backdrop can elevate the entire experience.
  • Professional Crew: Ensure the yacht comes with an experienced crew who understand the specific requirements of hosting a fashion show. Their expertise will contribute to a seamless event, leaving you to focus on showcasing your designs.

By analyzing these factors, you can handpick the perfect yacht that will serve as the stunning stage to unveil your fashion masterpieces. Embrace the opportunity to create a show beyond imagination, leaving a lasting impression on your guests.

Accommodating Guests and Models: Planning the Logistics of a Yacht Fashion Show

When organizing a yacht fashion show, careful planning of the logistics is essential to ensure a smooth and memorable event for both guests and models. With the stunning backdrop of the open sea and luxurious yacht setting, attention to detail is paramount. To accommodate guests, consider providing comfortable seating arrangements that offer prime views of the fashion show. Creating a cozy and welcoming environment is crucial, so incorporating plush cushions and stylish seating options is highly recommended. Additionally, it is important to plan for the models’ needs, ensuring they have a suitable preparation area equipped with mirrors, dressing tables, and ample space to change between outfits. To ensure a seamless event, a backstage team should be appointed to assist the models in their quick changes throughout the show. Accessibility is key, so including clearly designated pathways and signage for guests and models helps maintain a flow within the yacht. By meticulously planning the logistics, your yacht fashion show will undoubtedly be a remarkable extravaganza that marries glamour, style, and an exceptional sailing experience.

Designing the Perfect Runway: Utilizing the Spaces on a Yacht

When it comes to designing a runway on a yacht, creativity knows no bounds. With limited space yet limitless potential, yacht designers have embraced innovative solutions to ensure a seamless and stylish event. Here are some astounding ideas to utilize every nook and cranny of a yacht:

  • Multi-level runways: Instead of confining the runway to a single level, consider incorporating multiple tiers. This not only adds depth to the design but also offers a dynamic experience for the audience.
  • Transforming spaces: Yachts are known for their ability to maximize space. Why not apply the same principle to the runway? Create hidden compartments that unveil the runway, magically transforming a casual deck into an exquisite catwalk.
  • Panoramic views: Take advantage of the yacht’s stunning surroundings. Install floor-to -ceiling glass walls , allowing the runway to merge with the beauty of the sea. This exquisite experience will undoubtedly leave attendees breathless.
  • Floating platforms: Add an unexpected touch to the runway by incorporating floating platforms. Strategically positioned, these platforms create a captivating visual display as models gracefully move across them.
  • Interactive light installations: Illuminate the runway with mesmerizing light installations. Imagine walkways adorned with vibrant LEDs, responding to the models’ every step, creating an enchanting spectacle that blends fashion and technology.

No yacht runway should be ordinary; instead, it should encapsulate the essence of sophistication and innovation. By embracing these ideas, designers can transform limited spaces into extraordinary showcases where fashion truly meets the sea.

When it comes to hosting a yacht fashion show, it’s crucial to elevate the experience by incorporating top-notch entertainment and catering options. Imagine stunning live performances by renowned musicians, transforming the yacht into a stage for unforgettable moments. From mesmerizing aerial acrobatics to captivating dance routines, each element carefully choreographed to leave guests in awe. Not only will these entertainment acts add an extra layer of excitement to the fashion show, but they will also create a captivating ambiance that complements the elegance of the yacht setting.

But a truly memorable experience wouldn’t be complete without an exquisite catering selection. Picture a mouthwatering array of gourmet delicacies carefully crafted by world-class chefs, showcasing the finest flavors and ingredients. Guests will indulge in a feast for the senses, savoring every bite as they take in the stunning waterfront views. From elegant canapés served on silver trays to beautifully plated multi-course meals, every detail will reflect the sophistication and style of the yacht fashion show.

By combining exceptional entertainment and catering on a yacht, the fashion show will go beyond expectations, leaving guests with memories they will cherish forever. The luxurious ambiance, the breathtaking performances, and the culinary delights will create an experience that not only showcases the latest trends in fashion but also captivates and delights everyone present. Prepare to be dazzled as this event sets sail on a journey of elegance, beauty, and pure indulgence.

Yacht fashion shows are an exhilarating way to showcase the latest trends in a luxurious setting, but navigating the potential challenges surrounding insurance, permits, and safety regulations is essential to ensure a smooth and successful event. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind:

  • Insurance: Securing comprehensive insurance coverage is crucial to protect all parties involved. This should include liability coverage for potential accidents or injuries, as well as coverage for any damages to the yacht or the fashion show equipment.
  • Permits: Depending on the location and the regulations in place, obtaining the necessary permits is vital. Ensure you have the proper permissions from local authorities to host a fashion show aboard a yacht, as well as any additional permits required for serving food, alcohol, or playing music.
  • Safety Regulations: Yacht fashion shows involve multiple moving parts, so it’s important to prioritize the safety of attendees and crew members. Familiarize yourself with safety regulations pertaining to crowd management, onboard emergency procedures, and health and sanitation guidelines to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience. By proactively addressing these potential challenges and taking the necessary precautions, you can navigate the complexities of insurance, permits, and safety regulations with ease, allowing your yacht fashion show to shine as a seamless and unforgettable event.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

yacht fashion show

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

yacht fashion show

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

yacht fashion show

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

yacht fashion show

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

yacht fashion show

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

yacht fashion show

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

yacht fashion show

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

yacht fashion show

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

yacht fashion show

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

Table of Contents

When cruising, sailing, or lounging on the Deck, the ensemble you pick isn’t just about looking fabulous—it’s also about comfort, practicality, and weather-appropriateness. In this blog post, we’re diving headfirst into the world of nautical chic, offering fresh ideas for outfits that truly make waves. From elegant yet functional ensembles to attire that mirrors the luxury of a yacht, we’ve got it all covered. Prepare to embark on a journey that takes you through breathable fabrics, accessories that accentuate, and an undeniably seaworthy style. Navigate with me as we explore ‘What to Wear on a Boat: Outfit Ideas for Women,’ and allow the voyage of fashion discovery to set sail!

Setting Sail with Style: Essential Boat Day Attire Tips

1. The Art of Simplicity  While bringing out our most glamorous looks is tempting, let’s keep it grounded on the boat. Think about the winds that might unravel intricate hairstyles or the splashes that could surprise you mid-journey. The simpler, the better. Trust me, you’ll be more relaxed; there’s nothing more enchanting than a carefree soul on a boat!

2. Footwear Fundamentals  On one boat trip, I decided to wear my favorite suede sandals, and let’s say they didn’t remain my favorite for long. Oops! So, here’s a golden rule: always opt for non-slip, waterproof flat sandals. Not only will they keep you steady during those unexpected choppy waters, but they’ll also be safe from any unplanned splashes. And if you’re on a yacht or a similar fancy vessel? Be prepared to go barefoot!

3. Evening Elegance  Ever found yourself on a boat, gazing at a spectacular sunset, only to be interrupted by an unexpected chill? Yep, been there. Always bring along a lightweight jacket or wrap. Trust me, as the sun sets, the temperature can dip quicker than you think, especially with that sea breeze.

4. Daytime Essentials  Nothing dampens a boat day like squinting against the blinding sun or chasing after a hat stolen by the wind. So, grab a snug-fitting hat and some sunglasses. You’ll be grateful for the shade and the added protection against those sneaky UV rays.

5. Sun Protection is Key . One sunny boat day, I learned that water can amplify sunburns. (Hello, unexpected tan lines!) So, always,  always  lather up on that sunscreen. Those UV rays can be sneaky even if you’re lounging in the shade.

6. Be Prepared  If your boat day involves a dip in the water, be an intelligent sailor and bring a change of clothes and a towel. I’ve learned from experience that sitting in a wet outfit is not the most pleasant feeling.

Setting sail should be all about relaxation and fun. So with these tips in your fashion arsenal, you’re ready for a stylish and comfy boat day adventure. Happy sailing!

Outfit Ideas for What to Wear on a Boat

1. casually sailing  .

Casual Boat Day Outfit

Ah, the white linen button-down, a timeless treasure! I remember wearing mine while watching a sunset on the DeckDeck. Paired with high-waisted denim shorts, it’s an instant win. Throw in round metal sunglasses and that oh-so-trendy basket-woven straw bag, and you’re all set. And let’s not forget those slide sandals – perfect for that impromptu splash!

2. Laid-Back Vibes

Chill Boat Day Outfit

You can’t beat those trusty ripped denim shorts for relaxed days with buddies. Pair them with a vivid bikini and comfy waterproof slides. And hats? Trucker hats are the in-thing. I recently got this pink one with a cheeky smile, and it’s my go-to for channeling those chill vibes. Remember your retro aviators to add a touch of flair!

3. Simply Sail

Effortless Boat Outfit

Sometimes, less is more. For those moments when you want a hassle-free ensemble, a blue and white striped cover-up dress is your best friend. Mine’s saved me on so many spontaneous boat rides. Match it with single-band slide sandals and that essential large straw tote. Top it off with a white bucket hat, and you’re golden.

4. Setting Trends at Sea

Trendy Boat Outfit

Co-ord sets are making waves this season! I recently donned this turquoise poplin set, and I received compliments! You’re the boat’s trendsetter with a floral bikini peeking beneath, aviator sunglasses, and trendy jelly-footed sandals.

5. Nautical Nuances

Classic Boat Outfit

For the theme lovers, nothing screams ‘boat day’ like navy and white stripes. This lightweight striped sweatshirt and navy chinos combo is your ticket to that sailor look. I wore this once to a regatta and blended right in! Remember that large straw tote and a sailor-themed cap.

6. Sunrise to Sunset Styling

An All-Day Affair

For those day-long voyages, nothing beats the comfort of wide-leg linen pants. Matched with a blue swimsuit and white sandals, it’s effortlessly chic. Remember those gradient sunglasses and a spacious blue tote. Perfect for when the journey is as important as the destination!

7. Snap-Perfect Ensemble

Cute Boat Outfit

A gray and white striped romper is your best pick for those Instagram-worthy boat moments. Trust me, the likes will pour in! Pair with espadrille sandals, cat-eye sunglasses, and a cute straw bag; you’re camera-ready.

8. Glistening on the Deck

Glam Boat Outfit

Deck Sometimes, a bit of glam is all you need. This sheer crochet dress, with its open back, made me feel like a sea goddess once! Accentuate with a straw hat, oversized sunnies, chainlink sandals, and a sprinkling of gold jewelry for that luxe touch.

9. White Waves

Casual All White Boat Outfit

Ever been to a boat’s white party? This terrycloth co-ord set is my top pick! And while the white palette dazzles, add a twist with a colorful beaded necklace. Absolute perfection!

10. Dressed to Impress

Dressy All White Boat Outfit

Now for those upscale boat soirées – a white, tiered maxi dress is the way to go. I remember the appreciative glances I got at one such event! Complement with gold jewelry, and for that final touch? White lace-up woven espadrilles and a chic straw bag.

What To Wear On A Yacht featured image by the supermelon

Attending a yacht party calls for a blend of sophisticated style and relaxed elegance, capturing the essence of the nautical setting while ensuring your comfort and confidence.

Whether envisioning a glamorous sunset cocktail party, a leisurely sunbathing session, or a serene exploration of hidden coves, curating the perfect yacht ensemble becomes an art.

This guide navigates the realm of yacht fashion, offering insights and inspiration to ensure you’re impeccably dressed for every moment of your nautical experience.

From chic essentials that capture the essence of oceanic elegance to tips on selecting attire that harmonizes with both sea and sky, the following are the style essentials to elevate your yacht experience to unparalleled heights.

yacht fashion show

Yacht settings generally adhere to a semi-formal dress code, implying that items like shorts, flip-flops, or t-shirts are best avoided. Instead, consider selecting slacks or khakis for men; sundresses, jumpsuits, or skirts are excellent choices for women.

When in doubt about your attire, it’s preferable to lean towards a more polished appearance rather than a casual one.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

When dressing for a yacht outing, opt for a nautical-inspired ensemble. Consider wearing a crisp white shirt paired with tailored shorts, boat shoes or espadrilles, and a sun hat.

This classic look combines comfort and style, suitable for both genders, while capturing the essence of a yacht setting.

Before finalizing your outfit for the boat party, there are a couple of factors to consider, with the first being the prevailing weather conditions. If the temperature is soaring, opting for lightweight and breathable fabrics is paramount.

Donning stylish swimsuits is integral to yacht party attire, accompanied by chic cover-ups and delicate, breezy dresses or shorts. By skillfully coordinating these elements, you can effortlessly master the art of yacht-worthy fashion.

yacht fashion show

However, in the event of cooler temperatures, ensuring you’re well-insulated is imperative. Being caught unprepared amidst the vast ocean during fall or winter could prove quite uncomfortable.

Moreover, regardless of the schedule, having a sweatshirt or a light denim jacket at the ready is prudent, particularly when the night descends.

The maritime environment can turn quite chilly after sunset, especially during the colder months.

Furthermore, your outfit choice should be tailored to the specific activities planned aboard the yacht. If your plan revolves around leisurely moments on the boat’s deck, a combination of shorts and a T-shirt layered over a stylish bikini is likely suitable.

However, should water sports be part of the agenda, selecting attire that remains relatively dry and light prevents any undue discomfort caused by excess moisture.

Lastly, take into consideration the overarching ambiance of the yacht setting. For a laid-back gathering, opting for a more relaxed outfit is acceptable.

However, if the occasion leans towards a more refined tone, it’s essential to align your attire accordingly.

Midi or maxi dresses and stylish rompers and jumpsuits are excellent choices that seamlessly blend sophistication with style.

Essential attire for women at a yachting event includes cover-ups, tunics, kaftans, and dresses with a fluid, breezy quality. These pieces harmonize seamlessly with swimwear, offering both a stylish layer and a means of keeping cool and comfortable.

Opting for a maxi or lace cover-up exudes an elevated charm, while selecting a sundress cover-up or a romper lends a more relaxed aura. For everyday yacht wear, consider the practicality of linen dresses and side tie skirts, both of which effortlessly complement the maritime experience.

yacht fashion show

No looks exudes the maritime quite like a cover-up, and these lightweight garments serve as a stylish and functional layering option when transitioning between water-based activities and lounging on the beach or on a yacht. Cover-ups are typically made from materials like chiffon, cotton, linen, or lightweight knits, which make them breathable and comfortable in warm weather. Moreover, cover-ups offer protection from the sun’s rays while maintaining an air of sophistication. The following are common cover-ups for women:

yacht fashion show

With their loose and flowing silhouettes, tunics further amplify a great seaside look. They often feature intricate designs, embroidery, or patterns and can be made from lightweight materials like cotton, linen, or sheer fabrics.

Tunics provide coverage for the upper body while allowing air to circulate, keeping you cool. Their effortless charm pairs well with the nautical backdrop, allowing women to exude both comfort and elegance.

yacht fashion show

Kaftans are loose-fitting, maxi-length dresses with wide sleeves, often made from flowing fabrics like chiffon, silk, or lightweight cotton. Kaftans can be quite elegant and are popular for their bohemian vibe. They offer women full coverage and the ultimate in  comfort during warm weather.

Slay it with a sarong!

Typically made from lightweight, quick-drying materials like rayon or silk, sarongs are versatile pieces of fabric that can be wrapped around the waist like a skirt, tied as a halter dress, or used as a shawl. Sarongs are easy to pack and provide coverage while allowing flexibility in styling.

Inspired by traditional Japanese clothing, kimonos are open-front, flowing garments that often feature vibrant prints and patterns and are made from lightweight materials.

Kimonos are distinctive, add a touch of elegance, and can be worn over swimsuits or paired with shorts and tops.

Oversized Shirts

For a more casual approach, an oversized button-up shirt can be worn as a cover-up. It’s a versatile option that can be worn open or buttoned up, offering coverage and protection from the sun.

Play up the look with vibrant colors or intricate patterns for an engaging yacht style.

Is a cocktail dress a suitable choice for women?

For occasions leaning towards the more refined end of the spectrum, a sophisticated yacht party might very well warrant the selection of a cocktail dress, or in rarer instances, an elegant gown. The cocktail dress code, being slightly less formal than full evening wear, aligns well with such gatherings’ relaxed yet stylish atmosphere.

Ideally, the event’s formality level will be communicated beforehand, but exceptions do exist.

When the ambiance is less formal than a boat wedding, alternative options like wide-legged pants, rompers, or wrap skirts can be considered. Attire resembling what you would choose for a beach or poolside gathering would also be fitting.

An essential consideration when attending any yacht event is the choice of footwear. It’s advisable to steer clear of heels – opting for flat shoes is a safer and wiser choice to ensure a comfortable and accident-free experience.

Yacht Shoe Ideas for Women

Accessorizing.

Donning both hats and sunglasses is entirely fitting aboard a yacht, and they provide an added shield against the sun’s rays, which is undoubtedly beneficial.

Not only will you seamlessly blend in, but you’ll also be safeguarding your eyes and skin from potentially harmful UV exposure. Including sunscreen in your essentials is equally crucial to ensure comprehensive protection.

yacht fashion show

Amongst men, the favored ensemble for yacht journeys in motion often comprises a breezy, lightweight linen shirt, offering both comfort and composure throughout the excursion. Naturally, a pair of swim shorts is indispensable, ensuring you’re perpetually prepared for impromptu dips.

Completing the ensemble, opt for casual boat shoes that complement your yacht attire seamlessly.

Stylish sunglasses are essential to the maritime look as a vital accessory, effectively shielding your eyes from the sun’s glare.

While specific occasions may necessitate more refined apparel, such as dinner parties, these suggestions primarily focus on curating a laidback, relaxed aesthetic.

yacht fashion show

Linen button-downs stand as the preferred choice for men while onboard due to their lightweight and breathable nature.

They have long been associated with boating, ensuring a harmonious fit within a yacht environment. Light cotton options also offer similar advantages, with items like polo shirts seamlessly blending into a crowd.

Even a well-chosen t-shirt can find its place, though appropriateness should be tailored to the context. However, a slightly elevated appearance may be preferable for slightly more formal outings or celebratory gatherings.

A great pair of tailored pants are a definite option for a day or night out on a yacht. Linen pants , chinos, or loose slacks are all versatile enough for any event.

Yet, a reliable pair of shorts proves invaluable if the yacht’s purpose involves active endeavors like fishing or sailing.

These offer comfort and freedom and ensure readiness for any unforeseen water-related situations.

In the realm of yacht wear, swim shorts emerge as a particularly pertinent item, given the likelihood of aquatic escapades. Whether you find yourself plunging into the Mediterranean or relaxing a jacuzzi, shorts are a pragmatic must-have.

Be it for leisure or the potential of an emergency scenario requiring a swift swim, swim shorts serve both purposes seamlessly.

Ensuring both security and comfort, boat shoes are an indispensable inclusion for any yacht experience as they prevent unwanted slipping on the deck. Sometimes referred to as deck shoes, they closely resemble loafers but include laces for added practicality.

For more relaxed outings, some opt for flip flops, which can be suitable for casual days spent with friends.

Accessories

Wearing sunglasses aboard a yacht transcends mere fashion, assuming the role of a vital shield against the sun’s unyielding glare and potentially harmful UV rays. As you sail on a maritime journey, these shades emerge as a reliable companion, diligently safeguarding your eyes from discomfort and potential long-term harm.

Whether you’re leisurely absorbing the sun’s warmth or actively engaging in water-based thrills, sunglasses exude an undeniable air of refined elegance, effortlessly elevating your yacht ensemble.

What Is Suitable to Wear to a Yacht Party?

Crafting the perfect attire for a yacht party involves a skillful equilibrium among comfort, style, and functionality, seamlessly embracing the maritime setting.

Embracing an effortlessly chic and laid-back approach, the careful curation of your outfit can significantly enrich your voyage across the waves.

Deciding on fabrics that prioritize breathability and lightness, such as linen or cotton, ensures your ease amidst the sea breeze. In the backdrop of daytime gatherings, a palette of soft and pastel hues, including serene blues and delicate pastels, imparts an invigorating and lively ambiance.

Opting for a versatile piece like a fashionable sundress, coupled with boat shoes that perfectly balance comfort and trendiness, encapsulates the essence of casual sophistication.

As twilight descends and the festivities extend into the evening, embracing darker shades introduces an element of refinement, harmonizing with the fading sunlight.

The thoughtful inclusion of tasteful accessories, like a wide-brimmed hat for enhanced sun protection and stylish sunglasses that shield your eyes and accentuate your maritime charisma, further elevate your ensemble.

Ultimately, the crux lies in aligning your attire with the occasion’s level of formality, while never compromising on comfort, and embodying an aesthetic that mirrors the serene allure of open waters.

Final Considerations

Embracing a fusion of refinement and casual ease emerges as a simple and effective strategy when considering yacht attire. While certain occasions might warrant a subtle refinement, the extent of this shift hinges upon the unique event and the preferences of the hosts.

Give precedence to fabrics like linen and other lightweight options to optimize comfort. An indispensable element to include is a pair of boat shoes, guaranteeing stability on the deck. Additionally, ensure you don’t neglect key essentials such as swimsuits and vital sun protection gear, which notably includes sunglasses.

Yacht Fashion Is The Classic, Preppy Look Taking Quiet Luxury To The Next Level

Friends on a yacht

There's absolutely no doubt that Princess Diana was the ultimate fashion icon of the 20th century. From her iconic little black dress — the original revenge dress — to her upscale gowns and spectacular wedding dress, the beloved late royal is still a style role model for fashion novices and avid trendsetters alike. When not attending official events and donning glamorous outfits, Princess Diana looked especially stunning in breezy yacht fashion, from swim sets with matching sarongs and casual polo shirts to seersucker button-down overlays and a captain's hat.

Effortlessly preppy and elegant yacht style, indeed, pulls its inspiration from Princess Diana. Though the royal yacht Britannia, which she was frequently photographed on, is out of commission now, yacht style is as relevant as ever, with its unyielding preppy vibe symbolizing quiet grandeur throughout the decades. You, too, can get in on the style even if you don't plan to board a yacht any time soon.

Dress for a day on the water

The best way to incorporate indulgences of yacht styling is to imagine that you're dressing for a day on the water, the namesake of the fashion trend. Don preppy polos, flowing skirts, and timeless tote bags. Avoid form-fitting styles, but do accentuate your waist with belts and ties for a tailored look, and add classic accouterments like bows and pearls.  Since yacht style doesn't require an actual boat, you can ditch sea-inspired boat shoes for classic pumps and sunglasses à la Audrey Hepburn.

Shoulder sweaters are signature staples

When you wear a polo, don't forget to add a sweater on top, even if the weather is balmy. A sweater casually draped over the shoulders and tied loosely below the collar of your shirt is the ultimate staple of preppy yacht style, and quickly escalates the elegance of your appearance. To nail the vibe, evoke the spirit of "Gossip Girl" characters, casually lounging in their penthouses in the city with their loosely draped shoulder sweaters subtly signaling opulence.

Loose-fitting linen and breezy button-downs nail the look

A loose-fitting button-down shirt with high-waisted linen shorts that are belted or tied at the waist is a pairing that gives vibes of effortlessly upscale couture to make you look like you're about to spend a relaxing day out on the water aboard an expensive yacht. Accessorized with open-toed sandals or heels and a large, casual tote bag, the look will transition seamlessly from running errands or laughing with friends over lunch al fresco to sipping lavender lemonade and leaning into the sweet coastal breeze with a slice of key lime pie.

Seersucker is seriously comfortable and fashionably fancy

In the wardrobe of anyone with a preppy, understated, affluent style is at least one garment made from seersucker fabric. Puckered cotton fabric that's thinly crafted, the lightweight material of seersucker originated in India prior to attaining global popularity, particularly in the southern U.S. during days predating air conditioning. Since the fabric, hallmarked by its pastel stripes, is a no-sweat choice (literally) for summer months, the billowing garments are particularly favored for sunny, breezy yacht fashion. Swimwear, dresses, bow ties, Bermuda shorts, skirts, and suits of seersucker symbolically signal luxurious comfort.

Preppy accessories instantly elevate your ensemble

For an immediate boost to any outfit, the smallest of preppy accessories can go a long way toward elevating your look with subtle elements of affluent taste. In fact, the foundation of quiet luxury is to allow your attire to speak for you through silent gestures indicating a luxurious lifestyle. Take the trademark yacht-style seersucker fabric and use it for a complementary bow on your bag, or be even more elusive with monogrammed  accessories on your key fob. Less is definitely more when it comes to being luxuriously preppy.

Comfortable flowing pieces are critical

Yacht style promotes ease of prep and laidback vibes. Comfort is critical and form-fitting garments, scratchy fabrics, and apparel that inhibits dexterity won't do. Instead, flowing, summery staples are must-have pieces. Try pairing classic boating trends with sarongs. The fun, flowy fabric can be worn in an array of styles. Go barefoot with your sarong attire for quintessential subtle opulence, as the fabric whimsically waves in the wind.

9 Paris Fashion Week Moments That Kept Us Talking

Audiences were abuzz over breathing runways, drone models, social media blackouts, tartan codpieces and kisses on the catwalk.

Elizabeth Paton

By Elizabeth Paton and Vanessa Friedman

Elizabeth and Vanessa reporting from Paris.

This year’s fashion weeks have been going on for almost two months now. (You would be forgiven for not noticing, given the current news cycle.) They started in January with the men’s wear shows, which were followed by the couture shows, which were followed by fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris.

Paris hosts the biggest and glitziest of these events, and Styles covered the major moments. But as the week — and season — draws to a close, we recall others that turned our heads, made us smile or that kept us talking long after we saw them.

yacht fashion show

Runway Romance, Courtesy of Posh and Becks

Neither days of rain nor crowds screaming for their favorites celebs nor a broken foot after a gym mishap could stop Victoria Beckham from having her show — and hobbling out at the end of it to kiss her biggest fan: her husband, David. Also applauding the trompe l’oeil jackets that turned out to be halter tops and the face-framing coat collars were their children Brooklyn, Cruz and Harper, as well as their daughter-in-law Nicola Peltz Beckham. Perhaps the most impressive accessorizing, though, was Victoria’s crutches, which matched her black pants and top. (VF)

A redheaded woman in a red sparkly dress and matching gloves, a man in all black and silver sunglasses and Cher in a platinum beehive.

Vetements: Back and Bigger Than Ever

Why was Antoine Arnault, the eldest scion of the LVMH empire, in the front row of Vetements, the brand founded by Demna and Guram Gvalasia and now run solely by Guram? Was LVMH considering a purchase? So went the front-row whispers before the show, though the answer soon became apparent: Mr. Arnault’s wife, Natalia Vodianova, was on the runway. So was Alexander Edwards, Cher’s significant other, which explains why she was there, and so was Georgina Rodriguez, the girlfriend of Cristiano Ronaldo, wearing a jersey dress with his number on it.

The soccer star sadly couldn’t come to cheer Ms. Rodriguez on, though he did autograph her look, one of a series of clickbait runway moments that made the experience seem more like a “Real Designers of Paris” episode than a fashion show. Anwar Hadid, the brother of Gigi and Bella, wearing a gargantuan T-shirt that read “Not Mom’s Favorite,” was another (especially given the rumored tension between the brothers Gvaslia). “Team Aniston” and “Team Jolie” sweats were a third. Though maybe “Desperate Housewives” was the more appropriate comparison, given that Marcia Cross, one of the stars of that early Noughties series, modeled the last Swarovski-strewn look. (VF)

Catwalk Turn by Sam Smith

A-list cameos on the runway are a dime a dozen, but eyes still popped at the sight of Sam Smith at Vivienne Westwood. The singer took to the catwalk in a matching tartan codpiece, beret and platform ankle boots, clutching a wooden staff, while an experimental Austrian folk band called Sons of Sissy indulged in a bit of spinning and singing and some wood chopping and butt slapping. Yodel-ay-hee-hoo. (EP)

The Sweetest Moment at Chloé

Chemena Kamali’s first collection for Chloé was the best received of the two high-profile debuts in Paris. Her tiered maxidresses, flared jeans and blouses with fluted sleeves evoked a lightness and fluidity that prompted many to herald the return of the so-called Chloé girl. At the finale, when Ms. Kamali took her bow, then swept her little boy into her arms as he ran to give her a hug, the whoops and cheers were some of the loudest of the season. (EP)

A Coperni Bag Made Out of (Nearly) Nothing

Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant of Coperni love a viral fashion week stunt. In the past a machine spray-painted a dress onto a nearly naked Bella Hadid and robot dogs prowled the runway. This season, they revealed their version of an “it” bag — the Air Swipe — made from aerogel, the lightest material on earth, which is also used by NASA to collect space dust. The composition of 1 percent glass and 99 percent air gave new meaning to “barely there fashion.” (EP)

yacht fashion show

Courrèges Created a Breathtaking Set

Nicolas Di Felice, the Courrèges creative director, called his show a “study of symmetry and sensuality.” Models slid their hands suggestively into pants and trench coats with single pockets, and peekaboo slivers were cut to reveal flanks and hip bones on dresses with tumbling sleeves and straps. But it was the distractingly sexy set that hammered the message home. As the models walked to a soundtrack of heavy breathing and a beating heart, the fabric floor began to heave and sigh, inflating and deflating as the collection reached its — ahem — climax. (EP)

The Row Ruffled Feathers

The Row is a brand that thrives on discretion, aesthetic and otherwise. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen never give interviews and don’t appear at the end of their shows for the usual bow. But even by their standards, the request that guests not use their smartphones or post any pictures sent the audience into a tizzy.

Were they trying to underscore their luxury cred by making sure only those who were there had access to the experience? Were they commenting on the fact that most guests now seem to watch shows on their phones rather than with their own eyes? Whatever the reason, it meant that you will have to take our word that this was one of their best collections yet. (VF)

Drones as Models at Anrealage

Eighteen floating forms — pyramids and cubes and globes and dodecahedrons — dressed in 18 awning-stripe and metallic outfits that work equally well on the human body. Nine models demonstrating. Who wore them better — the person or their object avatar — in Kunihiko Morinaga’s Anrealage presentation, which imagined what fashion might become in the 22nd century? Does it matter, when both of them look so cool? (VF)

Is It Even Fashion Week Without Kim Kardashian?

Normally, one can’t move for Kardashians at fashion week. This season, they were few and far between, save for at the Balenciaga show, where Kim Kardashian made an appearance. The reality star has a long association with the brand: She arrived at the Met Gala in 2021 in a full-length Balenciaga outfit that completely covered her face, walked in a couture show in 2022 and is now an official brand ambassador. On Sunday, she attended the show in a black lace dress with the brand tag hanging from the back — accessories that later appeared in the show. Stand by for the copycats and a new trend for 2024. (EP)

Shushu/Tong's runway show during Spring Summer 24

Shanghai Fashion Week has announced its new schedule. Kicking off on 25 March, it runs for eight days, championing the best of homegrown talent as well as offering a sprinkling of international surprises.

On the runway, key domestic brands to watch out for include LVMH finalist Louis Shengtao Chen, and Comme Moi– fronted by the former model Lu Yan; Yueqi Qi and Samuel Guì Yang. Shanghai's Le Fame will open the fashion event at the official tent in the shopping district of Xintiandi with Mithworld–a sister line of London Fashion Week’s Mithridate–closing.

Local retailer Labelhood has beefed up its presence at the showcase. Returning to the Bund neighborhood, the emerging platform hosts names like WMWM, Mark Gong, Ao Yes, Yirantian, Chen Sifan and Oude Waag. In total, it features 16 brands–seven of which are new such as Aubruino, Yanyan Knits and Ray Dots. Menswear designer Zander Zhou and local heroes Shushu/Tong will also feature.

“We are excited to do a show every season. It’s one of my favorite parts of my work,” says the co-founder of Shushu/Tong, Liushui Lei, on the phone from Shanghai. Founded in 2015, his brand has been showing at the fashion week since Spring Summer 16 and counts Browns, Net-A-Porter and Dover Street Market among its stockists. Lei points out that a bigger gap between the end of Paris Fashion Week and the start of Shanghai Fashion Week gives “more time to prepare.” According to the designer, Autumn 24 is a "happy collection" with lots of elegantly cut ball gowns and formal dresses with embellishments. “As everybody knows, it's a difficult economy everywhere. But it’s vital to keep the industry going and encourage everyone to be more optimistic. I think that’s what we need right now,” he adds.

Luxury e-tailer Mytheresa who entered China in 2017 is teaming up with French house Courrèges on an exclusive public-facing exhibition. Previously, it launched its China Designer Program with four exclusive capsule collections in Shanghai.

Michael Kliger, CEO of Mytheresa, operating in the market since 2017, explains in a correspondence that even though the China market slowed down last year, “the prospects are enormous.” The immersive exhibition features looks from the upcoming exclusive Courrèges x Mytheresa collection alongside the latest collection and pieces from the archive. It will be accompanied by a panel discussion between Kliger, Courrèges’ artistic director Nicolas Di Felice and the artist Menthae Yu.

“Mytheresa and Courrèges are very committed and passionate about our customers in China and being part of this year's Shanghai Fashion Week,” Kliger notes, adding that Chinese consumers will account for close to 40 per cent of the worldwide personal luxury goods expenditure in the coming years.

Finally, the line-up includes the multitude of trade shows and showrooms spread over the city’s central downtown areas including Huangpu and Pudong. Among the likes of Mode Shanghai, Ontime, Tube and Wave Showroom, it also sees the debut of a new wedding-themed Bridal Moda at the Shanghai International Convention Center.

With over 100 activations on the horizon, Shanghai Fashion Week continues to punch above its weight – nudging for its place among the big four fashion weeks.
