In the summer of 1938, docks were obtained at Yacht Terminals Inc., a boat storage facility, that is now called Sailing Inc.

The docks consisted of wooden four-by-four pilings and two-by-four wooden decking and were constructed behind two sunken 100' barges.

On August 20th 1939 the group of boaters held its first meeting and decided on the name Forest City Yacht Club.

During the months that followed, a charter was obtained from the State of Ohio and a club burgee was designed.

In October 1941 a severe storm hit the City of Cleveland around 11:00 pm, and led to the destruction of the Yacht Terminals harbor. A week or so later an even more severe storm hit the City of Cleveland and the Yacht Terminals harbor. The storm broke up the sunken barges, and about 25 boats. Some boats 30' in length were reduced to kindling wood.

Not much progress was made until 1942 when a big break came. Land and water rights on a tract of undeveloped waterfront property adjoining Cleveland's Municipal Light Plant was acquired from Yacht Terminals Inc. A land fill was started north into Lake Erie, then veering westward over an old packet freighter called The Sturgeon, making it one of the safest harbors on the south shore of Lake Erie.

In the spring of 1946 the crane was ready for use. One drawback - The winches had to be hand cranked.

Plans were made for the clubhouse in 1948. Construction was started in the spring of 1949, and in no time there was a 20' x 40' clubhouse.

In 1952 the crane was motorized, eliminating the need to hand crack boats in and out of the water.

The center docks were installed in 1955. Two war surplus winches were purchased and installed on the crane, which completely motorized the crane. On December 12th the lease request had its first council hearing.

April 14th 1956 celebrated the signing of a new lease.

Construction began in 1958 on new north shore main docks. An addition to the clubhouse was added that doubled it in size. In 1968, another addition was added to the clubhouse, which included new rest rooms, showers and a storage room.

The old south dock was ripped out and rebuilt in 1975, catwalks were raised, and some badly needed pilings were driven.

On March 30th 1979 Forest City Yacht Club had the privilege of signing the first lease given to a Cleveland yacht club by the State of Ohio covering ten years with a five-year option.

In August 1980, ground was broken for the new John "Pop" Suvak Memorial service building. The building was dedicated in November. New electrical service was installed on the docks in 1981. The crane was renovated, and the restrooms were remodeled. A new 30 amp electrical system was completed on south and center docks in 1982.

The crane came crashing down in July 1983. Luckily no one was injured. Spurred on by the Commodore and with the help of many staunch volunteers the new rail crane was completed by lift out.

In August 1985 a leak was detected at the gas dock. In December the old gas dock paraphernalia was removed and replaced complete with a new tank, plumbing, and pump. The Clubhouse was remodeled and new windows and doors were installed. The members constructed the center dock pavilion.

Forest City Yacht Club celebrated it's 50th year anniversary in 1989.

The 90's brought a clubhouse expansion that included a large room on the North side, larger bathrooms and storage facilities. The center dock was expanded and wood decking was installed on center dock due to rising waters.

The millennium brought many new services and amenities to Forest City Yacht Club including several improvements to the docks, parking lots and walkways. A new entrance into the clubhouse was constructed with a canopy and a swimming pool was constructed. The ongoing improvements allow Forest City Yacht Club to enjoy an incredible reputation among members and guests.

The purpose of the Board of Trustees is to control and oversee all business, policies, and finances of Forest City Yacht Club. The Board of Trustees consists of the Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Fleet Captain, Secretary, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, the immediate Past Commodore and three regular members.

LADIES AUXILIARY

Since the formation of the Ladies Auxiliary in 1944, the Auxiliary has played an important role in the development of Forest City Yacht Club. Their many activities include beautifying club grounds, spring fitting out lunches, and sponsoring of social events throughout the year.

The ladies have given financial assistance in the building of the clubhouse plus buying furnishings and decorations. They graciously donate to Forest City Yacht Club for many of the improvements necessary in the clubhouse and on the grounds.

Being a member of a yacht club offers a myriad of benefits for Great Lakes boaters and it’s a wonderful way to get together with other people who share a similar passion for boating. If you’re not already a member of a club or you’re thinking of joining one but aren’t quite sure where to start, check out these excellent yacht clubs on the Great Lakes . It’s high time you discover what you’ve been missing.

In 1955, three friends named Oscar Sweeny, Dr. John Pierpont, and Bill Peet created a club on the shores of Lake Superior in Bayfield , Wis. , in order to promote sailing and racing on the lake. Ever since then, Apostle Islands Yacht Club (AIYC) has remained a family club and many members have belonged to it for generations.

Originally called the “Bayfield Yachts,” the club gradually grew to be large enough to purchase the point of land named Dock 8 which had originally been a lumber mill and fish cleaning station for the local commercial fishing fleet. Over the years, AIYC has had many upgrades, such as the seawall that was built in 2009 and the recent completion of the clubhouse that they rebuilt in 2017.  

AIYC offers 30 secure and protected slips with 30 amp power, water and internet access, and you can park your car directly at your slip. The club’s bathhouse features private showers that can be reached within 50 yards of all slips.

The newly rebuilt clubhouse boasts a fireplace and a full kitchen. You’ll also find outdoor patios, decks and spaces for sitting, campfires and grilling. Then the “Herring Shed” provides members with tools and a workbench for sails, equipment and ice. Additionally, you’ll find dinghy racks and shared bicycles for members.

Plus, if you’re a fan of the outdoors and hiking, the AIYC rests in a prime location, right in the town of Bayfield . This places it adjacent from the Brownstone Trail for hiking and biking, so you’ll never be too far from your boat or a scenic walk.

As a private club owned and operated by its members, AIYC is not a public marina. One of their goals at the club is to keep the organization simple and affordable which requires all members to help manage, repair and improve the club and its facilities.

The Bay City Yacht Club (BCYC) is located in Bay City , Mich. , near the mouth of the Saginaw River , just a short distance to the Saginaw Bay and beautiful Lake Huron . The club is member-managed, member-owned and is open to both power boaters and sailors alike. The clubhouse is also available to members for private events, and they offer different levels of membership from social to voting, with competitive pricing.

The BCYC is a club comprised of power and sail boating enthusiasts who love enjoying the bounty of the Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron . If you too are a boating enthusiast who loves to be out on the water, rest assured you’ll fit right in. The club prides itself on being family-friendly and respectful towards each other, and accommodates boaters at all skill levels. So whether you’re new to boating or you’re a seasoned veteran, BCYC will grant you the perfect experience.

The club offers an active sailing program with “beer can” races on Wednesdays, as well as weekend racing and regattas. In addition, anglers have access to a newly-built fish-cleaning station. Many amenities are available, including a clubhouse with a seasonal restaurant and full bar, a private launch ramp, shower/bath facilities, ample parking for guests, a gin-pole, pump-out facilities, wireless internet access, and secure gated access to facilities.

BYCY has 264 slips ranging from 26 to 50 feet situated in two basins. The South Basin is deep-draft with nominal 9-foot depths and the North Basin is shallow draft with depths maintained to 6 feet.

Being a member of this yacht club allows you to spend more time on the lake and less time getting to it. You’ll also be sure to enjoy the park-like setting with its expansive and well-maintained grassy areas and mature shade trees. Basically, it’s the perfect location for hanging out after a day on the water.

When you get hungry, you can mosey on over to the waterfront restaurant with its phenomenal view of the bay and full bar. You can keep the good times rolling both on the lake and on the land, thanks to the BCYC. Nestled on the largest of the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior rests Madeline Island Yacht Club (MIYC). It first came to be in 1977 when a group of passionate boaters organized the club after deciding they wanted a gorgeous and peaceful marina to serve as their yachting home.

Now MIYC serves as a private, non-stock yacht club that operates on a non-profit basis, benefiting its 140 voting members. These members collectively own the club and facilities, and they direct its operation through its elected board of directors.

MIYC offers a full-service marina with transient and seasonal dockage. Since it’s in a prime location, you’ll also find yourself within walking distance of shops and restaurants. Open year-round, the club is also home to the largest ship store in the area.

Even though MIYC offers its services to the general public, its primary mission is to support and serve its members who enjoy special benefits. Some of these benefits include preferred slip spaces and keyed access to the private member’s lounge and shower/bathroom facilities. You’ll also get Wi-Fi access and substantial discounts on dockage, launch, haul-out, storage and shop repair fees and fuel.

Once the full cost of your membership has been paid, you’ll receive your Certificate of Membership and member voting rights. Becoming a bona fide member of the MIYC is easy and definitely worth it. All you need is a “Letter of Introduction” and a completed application with signatures of two sponsoring members, or two letters of recommendation from sponsoring members. You then submit these materials to the board of directors through the MIYC business office.

In your letter be sure to include an introduction for you and your family members so they can get to know you. Also include why you wish to join the club, a description of your boating experience, and the details of the boat you own. You will also need to submit a $500 non-refundable deposit with your application which will then be credited to your membership purchase fee once you’ve been approved.

Established in 1934, Muskegon Yacht Club (MYC) is a premier Great Lakes yachting destination located on the southwest shore of beautiful Muskegon Lake . Sandusky Yacht Club (SYC) is located in the heart of downtown Sandusky , Ohio , on the shores of Lake Erie and is open year-round, serving its 700 members and their guests. With 125 years of history, the club has given its members shelter and comfort when the outside weather is not as inviting as a warm fireplace and friendly company.

BOATING (RECREATIONAL)

BOATING (RECREATIONAL). Recreational boating, more specifically yachting, became an organized sport in Cleveland in 1878 when GEO. GARDNER founded the Cleveland Yachting Assn., subsequently known as the CLEVELAND YACHT CLUB . Gardner, later elected mayor of Cleveland, is often referred to as the "Father of Yachting"' in Cleveland. In the summer of 1884, Gardner and other members of the Cleveland Yacht Club, at the invitation of Henry Gerlach, sailed to Put-in-Bay aboard Gerlach's sloop, Lulu. There were other yacht clubs on Lake Erie, and it was Gardner's idea that Put-in-Bay would be a perfect site for a major regatta involving the other clubs on the lake. On 17 Jan. 1885, he called a meeting in Cleveland to form an association of clubs, and from this meeting the Inter-Lake Yachting Assn. was born. The purpose of I-LYA was to foster camaraderie among Great Lakes yachtsmen and to adopt rules of measurement and handicaps to allow a variety of boats to compete in the regattas. The first official regatta was in Aug. 1894, at Put-in-Bay. It became the major regatta of I-LYA, and in the 1990s, known as "Bay Week," it extended through the first week of August.

Sailing yachts were not the only vessels used in the early days of racing competition. Naphtha-powered launches and steam-powered yachts competed in 1896. As more clubs, more types of boats, and 3 Great Lakes became involved, as well as some Canadian clubs, the creation of a continental governing body became necessary. Ernest W. Radder of the Cleveland Yacht Club chaired a committee that initially represented 109 yacht clubs and established the North American Racing Union, which evolved into the U.S. Yacht Racing Union. The complexity of current yachting rules springs from this early association. The Cleveland Yacht Club initiated a major race in 1901, named for its founder, Geo. Gardner. The Gardner Bowl was run on the 4th of July. In 1904 the first powerboat races were held on Lake Erie, and in 1908 the world record for speed on water was established at 28 mph. News of this event was relayed by carrier pigeons to eagerly awaiting enthusiasts in Cleveland, Sandusky, and Toledo. In 1914 another prominent Clevelander, ALEXANDER WINTON , had his name attached to the Winton Cup race. The longest race established by the CYC was the F. W. Roberts Memorial Trophy, a 180 mi. roundtrip between Rocky River and Port Stanley, Ontario. The most popular Cleveland-area regatta has been the Mentor Harbor Yacht Club's Falcon Cup, a 34 mi. race from Rocky River to Mentor. Established in 1938 by Richard Bostwick, it is run in cooperation with the Cleveland Yacht Club.

Two types of boaters emerged in the post-World War II era: powerboaters and sailors. With the development of the outboard motor and mass-production technology, powerboats became the foundation of the boating industry by a margin of 10:1. Those new to boating chose power over sail for a variety of reasons. The powerboat appeared to be an extension of the automobile, and the perception of simplicity of operation, as well as speed, versatility, and lower cost, combined to make the powerboat attractive to a wide variety of consumers. Sailing, on the other hand, had an elitist image and was perceived as complex, expensive, and restrictive. An important adjunct to recreational boating is sport fishing, which flourished in the postwar period. Sport fishing was organized by the Lake Erie Sport Fishermen, who in the early 1970s stopped the commercial harvest of walleye pike, and banned gill nets from Ohio waters. Sport fishing in the central basin of Lake Erie dramatically improved from its bleak days of the 1950s, when many had proclaimed the lake "dead." Through the efforts of the Ohio Sea Grant program, operating as a cooperative extension service of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, based at Ohio State Univ., the first artificial reefs were constructed offshore from Lakewood and Edgewater parks (see also FISHING INDUSTRY ).

With the introduction of mass-market boating, legal, political, and insurance-related issues began to surface. In 1946 the Greater Cleveland Boating Assn. was established by Commodore W. Weir of the Forest City Yacht Club to "pressure city, state, and federal governments" to advance water recreation. Safe operation of boats is the major goal of the association, and it also serves as an effective lobby for its 30 affiliated clubs and 50,000 individual boat owners. In this context, the GCBA was instrumental in repealing the state property tax on boats and further achieved the inclusion of a .005% gasoline tax to be channeled to the state's Waterway & Safety Fund, for the construction and maintenance of boating facilities. Since the majority of boaters in the Cleveland area trailer their craft, launch ramps and parking lots have been a major concern of the organization. In 1952 40,000 signatures were gathered and presented to Mayor Anthony Celebrezze seeking small-boat launching facilities for the Cleveland area. The mayor created the Dept. of Port Control, naming Wm. Rogers as the first director. The city established 5 public access ramp areas at Wildwood Park, GORDON PARK , E. 55th St., EDGEWATER PARK , and Donald Gray Gardens, of which the first 4 remained in existence in 1993. In 1956 the Lake Erie Marine Trades Assn. was established in Cleveland. The public role of this association has been the organization of various boat shows. However, its 100 members have also been involved in legal, political, promotional, and lobbying activities that affect the boating public.

As more consumers became involved in boating, financial institutions sought registration and titling of boats. In 1960, through the combined efforts of the banking community and LEMTA, the State of Ohio responded by requiring the registration of all watercraft and the establishment of a waterway safety fund. In 1986 there were over 30,000 boats registered in Cuyahoga County. The appearance of private marinas and yacht clubs catered to a segment of the boating public that could afford such facilities. Historically, the yacht club has been associated with old-line monied elites. Social, economic, and vocational stratification were still factors in some of the clubs in the 1990s. The entrance requirements for the Cleveland Yacht Club are illustrative. A prospective member of the CYC must be proposed by a senior member, sponsored by another senior member, and have references from 3 other members. This selection process, plus the payment of a $4,800 initiation fee and monthly dues of $142, qualifies one for membership. Dock space requires additional fees. In 1993 there was a 1-year waiting period for dockage. Until 1986 none of the yacht clubs or their affiliate, the I-LYA, had a woman or black man as a commodore; in that year Mrs. Davida Steinbrink was elected commodore of the Edgewater Yacht Club.

As the number of recreational boaters grew, safe operation became a major issue. The Coast Guard assumed the role of monitoring and responding to boaters in distress. The Boating Safety Div. of the 9th Coast Guard Dist. in Cleveland maintained stations at Cleveland, Marblehead, Ashtabula, Fairport, and Lorain; over 1,200 people were assisted every year by just the Cleveland station. Boating safety regulations grew in response to changing conditions in the industry and attitudes of the public. The USCG is assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary—a civilian volunteer, nonmilitary organization. The auxiliary conducts courtesy marine examinations and safe-boating courses and supports the Coast Guard in rescue and assistance missions. In the 1980s, Cleveland-area boaters were aided by a major renovation of the lakefront and the growth of recreational activity in the FLATS . The "Parade of Lights," organized by LEMTA for the annual Flats Fest, attracts the participation of 60 vessels. Cleveland Race Week, co-hosted in July by the Edgewater and Lakeside Yacht Clubs, bills itself as the largest freshwater sail regatta in the U.S., with 300 sail. The ongoing efforts of Cleveland-area yacht clubs to improve facilities, the revitalization of Lake Erie, and the establishment of the CLEVELAND AIR SHOW and the BUDWEISER CLEVELAND 500 on the lakefront have served to make the "North Coast" into a major water recreational area with broad benefits for area boaters.

Docking Your Boat

The lagoon at Lakeside Yacht Club is the envy of Lake Erie.  With direct access to the lake, there are no bridges to interrupt an enjoyable day on the water.  Great access to the lake does not have to imply sacrificing safety at the dock, however.  The well-protected lagoon means docked vessels are assured of safe harbor in even the worst of conditions.  With an ideal location behind the Cleveland break wall, boaters can access attractions along the Cleveland lakefront and Cuyahoga River in any weather.

Lakeside Yacht Club offers 250 slips for boats up to and over 60 feet of length, and the lagoon has an average depth of approximately 18 feet.  The slips include 30 or 50 amp electricity and water.  Wi-Fi Internet access is available throughout the club at no cost for members or guests.  The full service gas house has both gasoline and diesel fuel.  Pop, beer, ice, and other necessities for a day on the water are available as well.  Lakeside Marine Fuel can arrange special deliveries of fuel for larger yachts transiting Lake Erie.

Lakeside Yacht Club is the preferred port of call for the summer, or just a weekend visit, in the Greater Cleveland area.  Visiting mariners should contact the Harbormaster before arrival to arrange transient dockage.

New Cape Coral Yacht Club designs: Most on council like a coastal, Key West vibe

Given three different design options for the new Yacht Club Community Center , most of the Cape Coral City Council is leaning toward a coastal, Key West-flavor architecture.

At a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, the city sought direction from the council on a design direction for the outside of the community building.

"It's a concept, just like we do with anything else, and as we are designing, things may come up that we want to shift and be nimble (on)," said Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.

James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information about the look of the community building.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has been a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations after Hurricane Ian delayed the original plans .

The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

The city is also preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.

No estimates could be provided for the price of the new building.

"It will really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods," Ilczyszyn said.

The city will have that information once they have 30% of the construction design.

Two public meetings for the designs are planned for April 2 and May 7.

After getting public input, the city will vote to amend its contract with Kimley Horn to approve all these changes.

The plan is to have these changes approved or introduced before the summer hiatus.

New Designs for the Yacht Club building

John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, a Sarasota-based design firm, said the goal with the new designs was to maintain the experience of the original Yacht Club.

The majority of the council preferred option one.

Design one:

Bryant described the first option as "coastal vernacular" and similar to the park buildings at Lake Kennedy and Yellow Fever Creek.

"So it's sort of informed by the current architectural work in 2024," Bryant said. "Kinda Key West."

Councilmember Dan Sheppard and Mayor John Gunter preferred option one.

Gunter said the design was the most pleasing for him.

Councilmember Keith Long liked option one and said he liked the Key West aesthetic.

Councilmember Tom Hayden liked option one.

Design two:

Option two is more informed by the current Yacht Club and would have a stone base and mid-century feel to it, according to Bryant.

"There's certainly opportunity to kind of further develop this option to have even more of the existing Yacht Club feel, but a different vibe, feel than option one," Bryant said.

He also said option two might be more expressive the closer they try to recreate the aesthetic of the old ballroom building.

Councilmember Jessica Cosden liked design two as it incorporated design elements of the old building though she lamented how similar it looked to the first design.

"I wish we could have done more, but I know it's hard with a two-story building, to make it look the same as a very unique one-story building.

Councilmember Bill Steinke said two would be his choice as well, but was wary of additional maintenance of natural wood products used in the design.

"As long as we can bring that aesthetic and keep the maintenance down, number two would be my choice," Steinke said.

Councilmember Robert Welsh said he could go either way, but he liked the look of two.

Design three:

This would be more contemporary and modern.

"Even with a more contemporary language, you can still have warmth, incorporating some wood elements and stone elements," Bryant said.

None of the council members expressed any favorability for the third design.

Inside the new community center

The Community Center will have an additional 10,000 square feet for a total of 47,000 square feet, a history room to remember the first ballroom building on the first floor, and more rooms for civic and community use on the first floor.

Additionally, the new ballroom has shifted slightly as the balcony area on the second floor has been expanded to wrap around the top of the building.
