Recap / The New Scooby Doo Movies S 1 E 11 The Ghost Of The Red Baron
Edit locked, this episode includes examples of the following tropes:.
- Always Know a Pilot : The farming community has almost been abandoned thanks to the Red Baron's ghost flying around. The remaining farmer the group meets is desperate for someone to dust his crops. Combined with a more-impressive-than-usual aerial displayed (due to Scooby more than Curly), Curly gets the job.
- Big "NEVER!" : The Three Stooges are enlisted as cropdusters. They resign after the Baron threatens them and the gang: Velma: (disappointedly) You sure you won't change your mind? Moe: Positive. Neither rain or snow or gloom of night could keep us from our mission... Larry: Or thunder and lightning and hail. But ghosts?? Curly Joe: NEVER!!
- Velma notices a plant in the office wilting like some of the crops, despite having been fed with fertilizer. When she sees a bunch of weeds growing tall, it confirms her suspicions: the Baron's "ghost" swapped out weed-killer for the fertilizer, hoping to get the crop-dusting pilots to kill the crops.
- Shaggy finds the controls for the Baron's mini-plane during the episode and figures out how to use them with the idea of fighting plane with plane. It pays off later.
- The Con : The villain wanted to scare off all the pilots so he could sabotage the farmers by putting weed-killer into the crop-dusters. Then the farms would fail and would be forced to sell to him. Given that others wanted to expand a jet-plane field, he would have made lots of money selling the land to them.
- The ghost of the Red Baron starts a plane while Velma is hiding in the cockpit, sending her aloft in a piece of machinery she doesn't know how to operate. She and Fred and Daphne (who are on the ground post) desperately try to communicate, but the plane (now with Scooby aboard with her) runs out of gas as it coasts to a stop after hitting a pond.
- At the end, the Three Stooges end up going up in a plane, only for Curly to realize that he left the comic book he consults when flying on the ground. Scooby ends up having to use the mini-plane that he and Shaggy commandeered from the week's villain to go after them and make sure they land safely.
- Distressed Damsel : Episode writer Norman Maurer (who also owned the rights to the Stooges at the time) liked getting Velma in a fix. In "Ghastly Ghost Town," she gets sent down into a deserted mine below the town; in this episode she is sent airborne in a biplane she doesn't know how to operate.
- Hoist by Their Own Petard : The Red Baron gets his mini-plane commandeered by Shaggy and Scooby, and his getaway fails when Fred blinds him with a cloud of the weed-killer he wanted to use on the crops, causing a crash.
- Literal-Minded : When Scooby, reading Curly's flying instructions, tells him "Down, down!", he crouches. Moe pulls him back up and tells him Scooby meant the plane.
- Red Herring : Mr. Terra, the airport's mechanic, is scary looking and grouchy, and warns the gang to leave the area. Daphne expected him to be the ghost of the Red Baron, but he wasn't.
- Red-plica Baron : The episode features a Villain of the Week masquerading as Richthofen's ghost, using a red-colored, old-fashioned flying suit and flying a Fokker airplane while attacking pilots.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here : The crop-dusting pilot attacked by the Red Baron in the opening scene quits rather than go back up there after his narrow escape.
- Sealed Room in the Middle of Nowhere : Fred, Daphne, and Velma wind up locked in a room by the Baron's ghost while he goes to kill the crops. However, Shaggy and Scooby are in a room nearby and they join forces to escape.
- Shout-Out : When the villain gets captured, Shaggy quips, " Curses, Mr. Baron, foiled again! "

The Ghost of the Red Baron
- Post author: Professor Joel

The Ghost of the Red Baron is episode 11 of the first season of the New Scooby-Doo Movies and originally aired on November 18, 1972.
This episode sees the gang on a farm where the crops are dying as planes can not fertilize their crops properly due to the Ghost of the Red Baron haunting the sky.
The Red Baron is based on a real German pilot from World War 1 who won 80 air combats during that era due to his fighter pilot skills. He has a fascinating history and if you are interested in learning more about him, I suggest you hop on Google and get at it. I certainly canāt do him justice.
My favourite take on the Red Baron is the Red Beagle in Peanuts comics where Snoopy parodies him. Snoopy is even mentioned in this episode.
Despite being a fan of the 3 Stooges, I wasnāt looking forward to reviewing this one. I didnāt like the first 3 Stooges episode all that much. I just find the cartoon version of the 3 stooges is a pale reflection of the real thing.
Was I pleasantly surprised with my low expectations going in, or was I bored out of my skull with this episode? Letās find out.
The Ghost of the Red Baron – Episode Review
The episode begins with the Mystery Machine driving past a farm for sale as Shaggy takes them down a shortcut down a farm road so he can admire the rows of delicious corn. Velma takes note that some farms have ruined and brown crops of corn, while other farms have healthy corn.
In the sky they see a crop duster spraying fertilizer on the crops. The same plane driven by the Red Baron flies past the crop duster and forces it out of the sky. The Baronās plane also forces the Mystery Machine into a corn field, where they smash up 2 acres of corn until they finally emerge with a flat tire.
Talking to the farmer and the pilot, the farmer is angry his crop of corn was smashed up, but is even angrier when the pilot quits. The pilotās supervisor(Mr. Sawyer) says this is the 50th pilot to quit as everyone is terrified of the Red Baron. Fortunately the three Stooges show up and Curly volunteers to fly the plane.
Curly gives the crop duster a test drive, but Scooby takes control of the plane and performs some amazing in-air stunts that impress the supervisor (Mr. Sawyer) offers to pay double.
At the airport, Freddy is changing his tire. Shaggy wants to get out of there fast, but Freddy wants to see if the Red Baron comes back.
The gang also meet Andrew Terra, the plane hanger mechanic who warns them that this place isnāt safe. The Ghost of the Red Baron has been haunting the area, and wonāt let any airplanes fly.
Andrew then excuses himself quickly after hearing the gang gloat about Curlyās terrific air plane skills. Shortly after, someone turns on an airplane that chases the gang about the empty hanger.
The gang then meet Mr. Siegfried, the Airport manager, who tells them to leave, but Velma and Freddy are insistent to say.
Itās now night time and the Ghost of the Red Baron is flying high in the sky giving everyone a fright once more with his dangerous flying. The Red Baron drops a note that says āthe Red Baron Strikes again – Leave at once or face the Inevitableā
The gang and the stooges follow the Red Baron where he landed, but the airplane is gone. The two pairs of groups decide to padlock themselves in the airport hanger where they will be safe. Their plan is foiled, as the Red Baron has a pair of bolt cutters and cuts the chain leading into the Hanger. There he haunts the Stooges and the gang once more. Freddy sees that the chain is cut, so he realizes they arenāt dealing with a ghost. Despite his suspicions, we see the Ghost float after Scooby and Shaggy and give them a chase, until they are able to hide in the Mystery Machine. The Baron then crashes through a window and HOPS off into a corn field.
Velma sees a droopy plant and the Mr. Sawyer says heās been putting fertilizer on it every day, but the plane keeps dying. Velma has her suspicions and goes to investigate the fertilizer, but is chased off by a hopping and Floating Red Baron.
A long chase takes place with Velma in the sky in an airplane with no clue on how to fly it. The Red Baronās plane also takes to the sky and chases Scooby and Shaggy around in a corn field. The Red Baron is on top of a control antenna controlling his plane remotely.
The 3 stooges also hop in an airplane, and we get about 10 more minutes of chase hijinx with Freddy manning the control panel to assist everyone out in getting landed safely.
Eventually everyone lands, and Velma finds boxes of empty weed killer. She suspects the fertilizer was replaced with this weed killer.
Shaggy also finds a farmhouse used as a garage and Velma suspects its the Red Baronās. The lock on it is ultrasonic, so now they know that whoever lives there really doesnāt want to be investigated, soā¦ they investigate.
Outside, Freddy and the Girls see the Red Baron drive into the hanger with his jeep loaded with fertilizer/weed killer. As he enters, the three of them run in where they see the Red Baron hop around. The Red Baron spots them and locks them in.
Shaggy and Scooby eventually come across them, along with the Stooges and release them.
We get our last final chase scene in the sky where the Freddy and the girls along with the Stooges chase him in the sky, Meanwhile, Shaggy uses the remote control planes they discovered earlier to chase the Red Baron.
The Red Baron eventually lands and hops in his jeep, but Curly lands his plane on him and traps him.
Ripping the mask off it turns out to be Siegfried, the hanger manager. Siegfried wanted to ruin all the crops so he could buy up the farms and buy them dirt cheap. Then he could sell the lots back to the county as they were interested in the land so they could turn it into a jet field.
Finally, we learn that the Red Baron could hop and float due to cables in the sky, plus spring loaded coils in his boots.
With another mystery solved, the gang head out on their next adventure.
My Thoughts
I give this episode a 5 out of 10. This episode was okay, but I never want to watch it again. Itās just far too long and padded with nonsense.
The episode started off pretty cool. The Ghost of the Red Baron actually looked cool and was fun, however, 75% of this episode is just one big chase scene in the sky.
The look of the Ghost of the Red Baron is spot on, but they donāt give him much personality or any spookiness. The fact that he hops just makes him look stupid.
Weāre also introduced to a few suspects, but the episode barely spends any time on the plot for us to really care or even remember whoās who. The Stooges are also kept to a minimum, and aside from Curly flying the plane, they didnāt have much to do.
I think I did like this better than the first 3 stooges episode in some ways. In other ways, that episode is much more memorable due to how absurd and crazy it was. This episode is just flat out boring.
Iām sure someone out there loves this episode and is hurt that I feel this episode sucks, but hey, thatās what makes life interesting. If we all had the same opinion, the world would be a boring place.
That wraps up another episode, until next week when we will be covering the Ghostly Creep from the Deep, Stay Spooky!

Notes/trivia [ ]
- It wasn't revealed who wore the Ghost of the Baron costume, but given that the mask was inspired by Old Iron Face , it was more than likely that Mama Mione would've been a perfect fit (no pun intended). Daphne even implicates that it was her, comparing the masks to one another once Mama Mione is revealed to be a conspirator.

An excellent kit - well made and easy to assemble !
I always applaud when Atlantis reissues the much loved kits of the 60's and 70's. And love the variants offered. But was truly disappointed that the cool trademark Ghost's sunglasses were omited in the kit's part list.

Fortunately I have a spare set of glasses (complete), from an incomplete kit that I have in my spare parts box which I will paint in red chrome.

This is a very simple model to build and is a great addition to my Ghost of the Red Baron with chrome helmet.

My big brother built the original back in the 60's, and I jumped at the chance to have a go at it myself. I was able to complete it in about an hour, including the time painting the skull and applying the decals. No issues with fit or assembly. My only criticism would be that the red chrome is a bit thin in some sections.
