First Look: The Boathouse Group Welcomes Guests to Already-Minted Waterfront Digs in Rushcutters Bay

First Look: The Boathouse Group Welcomes Guests to Already-Minted Waterfront Digs in Rushcutters Bay

Australia’s most prestigious yacht club – and home of the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race – the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), is located in prime position: on the water’s edge in Rushcutters Bay. Now, it’s also home to the latest all-day restaurant from the Boathouse Group.

The Sydney-based hospitality group, which has built its empire on waterfront dining and long summer days, has taken over the space of the club’s former bistro. This marks the group’s 10th Sydney venue, but only the second one in the eastern suburbs. Up until the opening of the Rose Bay outpost just over two years ago, all the whitewashed beachy venues have been north of the Harbour Bridge.

It's a fitting union. Moving into the 300-seat CYCA dining room and terrace, the group has injected its signature nautical style via lobster pot pendant lighting, touches of marble and a jungle of lush greenery.

Never miss a Sydney moment. Make sure you're subscribed to our newsletter today.

Alongside the decorative changes, the group’s executive chef James Brownrigg has developed an all-day menu that both CYCA members and visitors can enjoy. To start, breakfast options are kept casual with classics like bacon and egg rolls and avocado on toast.

Shifting tune for lunch and dinner, the menu brings a sophisticated Mediterranean influence. Among Brownrigg’s dishes, there’s beef carpaccio with truffle pecorino, white taramasalata, a glossy round of house-made Turkish bread carrying the summery combo of lemon and sea salt, and a prawn pasta boasting a lip-smacking chilli hit. Making use of the kitchen’s newly installed pizza oven, there’s a selection of hand-stretched flatbreads available too.

“With the food, we try to make something unique and produce-driven,” Brownrigg tells Broadsheet . “We spend a lot of time finding the best ingredients and presenting them in a simple way for people to enjoy. We don’t try to overcomplicate things.”

In addition to switching things up at the CYCA, the hospitality group has refreshed the menu in its Manly Pavilion digs ahead of the warmer months, delivering snackable dishes of baby peppers, flash-fried calamari and sugar plum tomatoes. This freshen-up extends to the location’s interiors, shifting gears to something a bit more casual, taking advantage of the venue’s secluded waterside terrace.

There are plans to transform the Palm Beach eatery’s homewares store into Casa, an Italian pop-up cafe and restaurant. Plus, opening hours at Shelly Beach are extending and the cocktail offering is coming to the fore.

“We’re reflecting on what we’ve done well over the years and just reassessing,” Brownrigg says. “[We want to] give people more of what they want, which is relaxed dining, but we still want people to feel like they’re being looked after.”

Boathouse CYCA is open for both bookings and walk-ins to CYCA members, their guests and non-members who reside outside of the 5-kilometre radius.

rushcutters yacht club restaurant

Ahead of its 80th anniversary in 2024, Rushcutters Bay’s Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (the home of the Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race) has introduced a waterfront venue by The Boathouse Group.

The Boathouse CYCA kicks things off with simple satisfying breakfasts, followed by a Mediterranean-influenced lunch and dinner menu with calamari fritti, orecchiette with crab and chilli, and taramasalata with charred flatbreads fresh from the pizza oven.

Crowd-pleasing staples like burgers, fish and chips, steaks, and Boathouse’s beloved prawns with seafood sauce and fish tacos also feature.

A perfect spot to watch the sun set over the bay, The Boathouse CYCA’s drinks menu covers a diverse wine list with local and international producers, Boathouse’s signature coastal cocktails and a wide range of tap beers.

The Boathouse Group’s signature coastal-chic styling flows throughout the 300-person space, with lobster pot pendant lights, natural seashell elements, and plenty of sailing memorabilia.

Under the Registered Clubs Act, The Boathouse CYCA is open to members, guests of members, and non-members who reside five kilometres or more from the club.

What I Wish I’d Known About Travelling to South Korea Before I Arrived

It’s been a big year for The Boathouse Group. The Sydney hospitality group closed its Palm Beach Boathouse location, opened a summer pop-up at Barrenjoey House called Casa, and on September 1, a new permanent venue, The Boathouse CYCA .

Located on the harbour foreshore at Rushcutters Bay, The Boathouse CYCA will offer breakfast, an all-day lunch and dinner menu and a bar, as well as play host to events.

The menu was designed by The Boathouse Group Executive Chef James Brownrigg, and features fresh, coastal dishes inspired by Mediterranean cuisine, like grilled barramundi, fish and chips and taramasalata, served alongside charred Turkish bread. Pizza, schnitzels and burgers will also be offered.

The very best of The Latch delivered straight to your inbox.

The Boathouse CYCA

The CYCA, short for Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, is one of Sydney’s most-known yacht clubs, around for 80 years. It’s also the home to the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Antony Jones, CEO of The Boathouse Group, says the groups’ venues are known for their picturesque waterfront settings so the CYCA was the perfect fit. This will be the first time the group will operate out of an existing venue, taking over as the hospitality partner.

“The key difference will be working alongside the team at CYCA to ensure our offering aligns with their club ethos and, most importantly, is well-received by the members and their guests,” says Jones.

The Boathouse CYCA

Like other The Boathouse spots, The Boathouse CYCA will include plenty of plants, lobster-pot ceiling pendants and other nautical décor details. The design was looked after by Laura Patterson, The Boathouse Gorup Manager for Interior Design and Venue Presentation, who also worked on the relaunch of the Manly Pavilion.

As for how to best experience The Boathouse CYCA, Jones suggests you might arrive by boat if you’re coming from another part of Sydney.

The Boathouse CYCA

“It’s magnificent puttering into Rushcutters Bay and through the yachts in the marina, then being dropped right in front of the CYCA,” he says. “Then, grab a picnic table on the deck, so you’re as close to the water as possible and order a round of cold drinks, as well as some of our smaller shared plates to get started.”

His picks for starters? The house bread, which is served charred with flaky sea salt, taramasalata, beef carpaccio, calamari fritti and tiger prawns, which are served in a bowl.

“I would then grab some larger plates to share with your group, such as the barramundi, which is served with artichoke, preserved lemon and fennel; eggplant parmigiana layered with stracciatella; and a prawn flatbread,” he says.

The Boathouse CYCA

“Plus, I’d ordered some hot chips and salad. After the meal, I would take the opportunity to soak up the history of the club through the memorabilia, then have a stroll around Rushcutters Bay foreshore to walk off lunch. What a day out!”

The Yacht Club Offers Waterfront Dining in Edgewater

yacht club entrance

A new seafood restaurant and bar is open in Edgewater, offering casual dining in a relaxing atmosphere. It’s hard to miss The Yacht Club along the Edgewater Commons Shopping Center pier, with its white lighthouse-shaped façade. In terms of location, locals will recall the space previously housing Joe’s Crab Shack.

However, the 13,000-square foot interior is now totally different. It seats 120 in the main dining room; which boasts olive green walls, Greece-imported gold accented furniture, and floor-to-ceiling windows. In addition, the dining room overlooks a deck with water views from all sides. Meanwhile, the private upstairs dining room at The Yacht Club seats 150. Finally, their marble bar can seat another 20, while their lounge with a view seats yet another 30.

But we haven’t even gotten to the outdoor deck yet; this section seats 60 – rain or shine — and offers views of both the Hudson River and Manhattan. “The outdoor setting was designed to resemble a waterfront bar in Europe, from the island-chic light fixtures to the sliding floor to ceiling doors which easily open and close weather permitting,” says The Yacht Club Owner Eliana Stefanitsis; her family also runs the Hudson River Group, which owns Molos in Weehawken .

Like many other businesses, COVID-19 caused a delay in operation. Eliana’s original plan was to open The Yacht Club in April, but wound up waiting until August instead. “We aren’t taking reservations because we want to encourage people to come eat, enjoy the space, and not have to plan in advance,” she says. Likewise, their plan is to accommodate both “people who want to hang out at the bar and enjoy a craft cocktail or families who want to go out to eat.”

Seafood by the Sea

The Yacht Club serves American seafood dishes, courtesy of Executive Chef Gregory Zapantis. (Fans of the Hudson River Group will recognize that name from Molos.) To further diversify the menu, the restaurant also employs Sushi Chef Steve Song (previously from Masa in New York City).

As for their signature dishes, The Yacht Club specializes in lobster. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that lobster rolls and the lobster BLT sandwich are big hits. Of course, you can also find salads, tacos, and burgers on the menu. Meanwhile, the full bar menu includes frozen drinks. Their signature cocktail is the Grapefruit Botanical Spritz, with Ketel One grapefruit juice, Aperol liqueur, and club soda.

They also offer gluten-free items such as wild salmon and skirt steak. Eliana points out that vegetarian items are limited for the moment, but they plan to expand on this soon. For now, they can accommodate vegetarian meals by request.

You can visit The Yacht Club at 541 River Rd in Edgewater. For hours, their full menu, and other details, search for The Yacht Club online.

The Yacht Club, casual seafood restaurant with stunning skyline views, to open in Edgewater

rushcutters yacht club restaurant

At the new Yacht Club in Edgewater, you could almost imagine you’re at a picturesque lighthouse in Maine or Nantucket, if it weren’t for the sweeping view of Manhattan just across the water.

The relaxed seafood restaurant — the façade is a stout, white lighthouse — is set to open in the former Joe’s Crab Shack location on Aug. 26. It’s owned by Eliana Stefanitsis, whose family runs the Hudson River Restaurant Group that owns Molos in Weehawken.

“The Yacht Club has more casual, American seafood, as opposed to Molos which serves Mediterranean fine dining,” said Stefanitsis.

On the menu are Maine and Connecticut lobster rolls (the kind with mayo and the kind with butter, respectively), Maryland crab cakes, popcorn shrimp, lobster claw BLTs, oysters and sushi.

For drinks, the outside bar serves up wine by the glass and bottle, beer, cider, mocktails and smoothies.

Executive Chef Gregory Zapantis – a Greek chef who also worked at Molos – will oversee the kitchen. He was inducted into the Hellenic Chef’s Club for Greek chefs in 2011 and was the club’s first culinary ambassador to Greece in North America.

Dining: These 8 restaurants have North Jersey's most stunning outdoor dining areas

The Yacht Club also brought on Steve Song as the sushi chef. A graduate of the Institute of Culinary Education, he has worked at Masa, ABC Kitchen, DOMODOMO (all in NYC) and Sheli’s in the Square in Monsey.

“It’s an American place, but we’re trying to cultivate all different areas of seafood, which is why we specifically wanted a sushi chef” said Stefanitsis.

The 13,000-square-foot space seats 120 in the main dining room, 150 in the private upstairs dining room, 20 people at the bar, 30 people in the lounge, and 60 on the outdoor deck.

Right now, because of the ban on indoor dining, only the latter is open. But even if indoor dining were allowed, you’d probably want to sit on the deck, which opens up to the Hudson and to views of Manhattan.

Indoors, the design indoors features a wide marble bar, floor-to-ceiling windows in the main dining room, olive green walls and gold accented furniture imported from Greece.

Stefanitsis hopes to make guests feel like they are at a breezy, modern resort when dining at The Yacht Club.

The Yacht Club is located at 541 River Road, Edgewater.

Some are open to all with a hefty (or reasonable) membership fee. Of course, there are a few that anyone can enjoy! One example is The Yacht Club in Edgewater. It’s a restaurant, not technically a club, but it sure FEELS fancy. With delicious food and waterfront views, it doesn’t disappoint.

Here’s what you need to know! The 13,000-square-foot space gives off some serious vacation vibes. Located on the pier of the Edgewater Commons Shopping Center, this eatery is brought to you by The Hudson River Hospitality Group, owners of Molos in Weehawken. Executive chef Gregory Zapantis is a culinary ambassador for Greek cuisine and has been a member of the prestigious Hellenic Chef’s Club since 2011.

Sushi Chef Steve Song apprenticed under Chef Masa Takayama at Masa in NYC. Masa is one of New York’s most expensive, and most exquisite, sushi restaurants. It is a 3-star Michelin eatery with exceptional cuisine. These talented chefs come together to create a menu of popular American seafood dishes including Maine and Connecticut Lobster Rolls, Maryland Crab Cakes, a Lobster Claw BLT, Popcorn Shrimp, and hand-rolled sushi made to order.  There will also be a dedicated oyster shucking area at the bar.

Though I have not been able to dine here yet (it just opened this week), delectable menu items that appeal to me include shrimp tacos, linguine with clam sauce, lobster mac n’ cheese, skirt steak with sweet potato fries, and the grass-fed beef burger with aged cheddar.
